Madras High Court quashes detention order issued by Chennai Police against YouTuber Savukku Shankar

0

The Madras High Court has quashed the detention order against YouTuber Savukku Shankar by invoking the Goondas Act of 1982.

Justices SM Subramaniam and V Sivagnanam of Madras High Court quashed the preventive detention order passed by the Chennai Commissioner of Police against the YouTuber on May 12.

In July, the Supreme Court granted interim relief to Savukku Shankar until the Madras High Court decided on his detention.

Shankar was arrested on May 4 for allegedly making defamatory remarks against women police officials. The arrest was based on a complaint by a Coimbatore City Police sub-inspector. Following his arrest, the Chennai Police registered two additional cases against him, including one for an old harassment complaint by journalist Sandhya Ravishankar.

After the police arrested Shankar, Sandhya Ravishankar thanked the police in a post, saying, “Thanks to CoP, Chennai, and team.”

Chennai Police also registered another case against Shankar, based on a complaint by Veeralakshmi, founder of Tamilar Munnetra Padai, under various IPC sections.

“After 6 years, Chennai Police registered an FIR on the basis of my complaint against ‘Savukku’ Shankar. CCB/Cyber Crime have registered a case under sections 294(b), 354D, 506(i), 509 IPC and section 4 of TN Prevention of Harassment of Women Act on May 7, 2024. Thanks to CoP, Chennai and team,” Ravishankar said in a post on X.

“Further, another case has been registered on the complaint lodged by Veeralakshmi, founder and leader of Tamilar Munnetra Padai, against Shankar alias Savukku Shankar and Felix, at GCP, Central Crime Branch, Cyber Crime Police Station under sections 294(b), 506 (i) IPC: Greater Chennai Police,” Chennai Police wrote on X.

On May 12, 2024, a detention order was passed by Tamil Nadu police and branded the YouTuber as a ‘goonda’ as described in Section 2(f) of the Tamil Nadu Act 14 of 1982 on the ground that his activities were prejudicial to the maintenance of public peace.

Tamil Nadu Congress’ N Aswathaman arrested in BSP leader K Armstrong’s murder case, expelled from party

On Thursday, 8th August, Sembium Police arrested N Aswathaman, a Tamil Nadu Congress party office-bearer, for his involvement in the murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader K Armstrong. On July 5th, a gang murdered the BSP leader outside his house in Perambur using sharp weapons.

According to the reports, Aswathaman, the state’s general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Youth Congress, is the son of north Chennai don Nagendran, who is imprisoned in Puzhal. Aswathaman was previously arrested for threatening a businessman in Ennore. According to reports, he believed Armstrong was the reason for his imprisonment and had grown hatred towards him.

The hatred was so intense that Aswathaman also suspected Armstrong had conspired against him in the lawyers’ association elections. Aswathaman, an advocate by profession had also threatened Armstrong with a gun a few months ago over a multi-crore land dispute in Morai, near Sholavaram on Chennai’s outskirts.

The probe is eventually expected to lead to Nagendran. Nagendran had been released on parole a few weeks before Armstrong’s murder. He attempted to meet with Armstrong to reach an agreement with Aswathaman on the property dispute. But Armstrong avoided meeting him, the police stated.

On 5th July, K Armstrong, the Tamil Nadu chief of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), was hacked to death by six bike-borne attackers near his house in Chennai. Some of the attackers were reportedly dressed as delivery agents and used sharp weapons during the attack. They attacked Armstrong when he was holding discussions with his party functionaries near his house in the city’s Sembium area. Following the attack, they fled the crime scene. Responding to the gruesome killing, BSP Supremo Mayawati demanded “punishment for the guilty”.

Armstrong’s family immediately rushed to the spot where he was lying in a pool of blood with severe injuries to his head and neck. He was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

K Armstrong was a lawyer by profession. In 2006, he served as a corporation councilor and later became the state president of the BSP the next year. He contested from the Kolathur constituency in the 2011 Tamil Nadu assembly elections but lost. Two years ago, he came to the limelight, when he organized a mega rally in Chennai and invited BSP chief Mayawati.

A total of 22 persons have been arrested by the police in this case. Notably, after the arrest, Aswathaman was expelled from the primary membership of the Tamil Nadu Youth Congress with immediate effect. “The Tamil Nadu Youth Congress is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and discipline within its ranks,” the official statement by Congress read.

Tamil Nadu Youth Congress president M. Lenin Prasath condemned Aswathaman’s involvement and said that the decision of his expulsion was taken after his actions were ‘deemed inconsistent with values and principles of our party.’

Iraq proposes a bill to lower the legal marriage age for girls to 9

A proposed bill in Iraq’s parliament has ignited widespread outrage and concern, as it seeks to lower the legal marriage age for girls to just 9 years old. The controversial legislation, introduced by Iraq’s Justice Ministry, aims to amend the country’s Personal Status Law, which currently sets the minimum marriage age at 18.

The bill would allow citizens to choose whether religious authorities or the civil judiciary should handle family matters. Critics fear this will significantly reduce rights related to inheritance, divorce, and child custody.

If passed, the bill would permit girls as young as 9 and boys as young as 15 to marry, raising concerns about increased child marriage and exploitation. Critics argue that this backward step would erode decades of progress in advancing women’s rights and gender equality.

Human rights organizations, women’s groups, and civil society activists have strongly opposed the bill, warning of severe consequences for young girls’ education, health, and well-being. They point out that child marriage leads to higher dropout rates, early pregnancies, and a greater risk of domestic violence.

According to UNICEF, 28 per cent of girls in Iraq are already married before the age of 18.

Sarah Sanbar, a researcher at Human Rights Watch (HRW), stated that passing this law would indicate a country regressing rather than progressing.

Amal Kabashi of the Iraq Women’s Network also expressed strong opposition, arguing that the amendment “grants excessive control to men over family matters” in an already conservative society.

Parliament withdrew the proposed changes in late July after many lawmakers raised objections. However, the bill resurfaced in an August 4 session, gaining support from powerful Shia blocs that dominate the chamber.

The proposed changes would represent a shift from the 1959 legislation that, after the fall of the Iraqi monarchy, transferred family law authority from religious figures to the state judiciary. The new bill would reintroduce the option of applying religious rules, primarily from Shia and Sunni Islam, without mentioning other religious or sectarian communities in Iraq’s diverse population.

Supporters of the bill claim it aims to standardize Islamic law and protect young girls from “immoral relationships.” However, opponents argue that this reasoning is flawed and overlooks the harsh realities of child marriage.

Sanbar from HRW noted that by giving marriage authority to religious figures, the amendment would “undermine the principle of equality under Iraqi law” and could “legalize the marriage of girls as young as nine, robbing countless girls of their futures and well-being.”

“Girls belong on the playground and in school, not in a wedding dress,” she added.

It remains uncertain whether this latest attempt to change the law will succeed where previous efforts have failed.

‘It was political, not religious’ – absurdity of this claim when it comes to Islamic aggression

Whenever any Islamic extremist or mob goes on a rampage, the Pavlovian response of the global left, which has decided to be a loyal servant of the Islamists for some decades now, is to deny it or dilute it if outright denial is not possible.

The same is being observed as Islamic mobs hunt for Hindus in Bangladesh after the nation went into another phase of anarchy with Sheikh Hasina, the then Prime Minister of Bangladesh, being forced to resign from her post and flee the country. That happened on Monday, and today is Friday when things could get even worse after mobs assemble for communal prayers.

Tools of leftist propaganda

The standard propaganda employed by the left for whitewashing crimes of Islamists comprises various techniques and tools – The first one is outward denial, which includes suppressing and censoring any information that goes against their well-crafted narrative (where Muslims must be the only victims). However, this has not been working ever since the internet, especially social media, gave the power of publishing and distribution to everyone. Facts started coming out.

Since denial has been tough, the tools of dilution have become important. The most important among these tools has been the tool of, ironically, “fact-check”. Facts started coming out, so “fact-checkers” were created. For this, the propagandists have to find, or even plot, a few claims of pieces of information that can be declared fake or false. This puts seeds of doubt in people’s mind and thus entire case itself can be assumed fake; that is what drives the “fact-checkers” of a certain kind.

This trick isn’t new, however. Many lawyers have been using similar tricks to discredit rape victims, for example. “Were you wearing the red dress or green gown that morning?” the lawyer will ask, a traumatized victim can come up with a wrong answer due to fuzzy memory, and bingo, “Milord, hear is the CCTV footage showing her wearing blue. She is clearly lying and no rape ever took place!”

People are slowly realising this nature of “fact-checkers” and thus, other tools of dilutions have become equally important. This is where they are going back to tried and tested tools of narrative building – slanted media reports would be published, fact-finding missions of ‘eminent citizens’ would be constituted, lawyer’s arguments or tricks would be selectively reported as facts (if and when the case goes to courts), research papers by ‘scholars’ would be published (would you believe that there is actually a guy who has written a ‘research paper’ on OpIndia so that it can be cited to vandalise its Wikipedia page? It’s true), propaganda art would be created, and these would be amplified by celebrities and influencers (and if required, even by pornstars).

Fighting against all of these at the same time becomes overwhelming, for they build upon existing old set narratives (literally over a century old), which are yet to be destroyed. Imagine that even now inane profundities like ‘religion is a personal matter’ or even ‘terrorism has no religion’, are repeated ad nauseum by almost all public speakers.

Politics vs Religion argument

In case of the ongoing slaughter of Hindus in Bangladesh, the old set narrative of “it is political, not religious” has been employed after denial of atrocities and dilutions via fact-checks and “human chains” did not appear to be working.

Scroll, a leftist propaganda website was first to further this theory saying Hindus have been being attacked for political reasons and not religious reasons, because they had traditionally voted for Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League. This was soon picked up for repetition and amplification by Al Jazeera, the Qatar based media outlet, which has proven itself to be the best ally of Islamists in modern times (just in case you did not know, one of their ‘journalists’ in Gaza was working as a part-time terrorist and keeping Jews hostage).

Now I don’t want to discredit the “It was political, not religious” narrative just by discrediting the platforms that published it, even though they deserve nothing but contempt. It is important to understand why this argument is flawed as well as sinister, because it is most often employed to whitewash Islamic aggression (including bigotry, injustice, atrocities, and even terrorism).

This argument has been used to paint Mughal tyrant Aurangzeb as a just ruler, where ‘scholars’ like Audrey Truschke have written thesis to show how his army destroying temples after temples was actually a political statement rather than naked display of religious bigotry. The same argument has been employed in Kashmir to whitewash Islamic terrorists – who themselves have used religious slurs like cow piss drinkers and idol worshippers – by claiming that the ‘struggle’ in Kashmir is political and not religious.

The same argument is used when a Prashanth Poojary is killed in Karnataka or a Chandan Gupta is killed in Uttar Pradesh by Muslim mobs – that they were killed due to political reasons, and not religious. This has given a very smart alibi to Islamic terrorists where they just have to use the keyword of “Sanghis” to express all their violent thoughts regarding Hindus in general. Their religious bigotry gets the shield of being “political” statement and not religious.

The argument sells and ends up convincing many Hindus, because they genuine believe that politics and religion are different spheres. And for them, they are. But that’s not how it works in the Muslim societies. And this politically incorrect statement has to be made, else more and more Hindus will be killed with the crime being covered up as being ‘political violence’ than what it really is – an ethnic genocide.

Politics is not just electoral politics

The first thing to realise is that politics is not merely elections and political parties. Whatever he says appears funny because of his image of a joker, but Rahul Gandhi was, kind of, right when he said “politics is everywhere. It is in your shirts, in your pants”.

Actually no one demonstrates better than Islamists how politics can be in someone’s pants. In Bangladesh, they are actually pulling down pants of dead people and cheering loudly when they realise it was a Hindu they killed.

Nonetheless, for an average Hindu, the understanding of politics is limited to existence of political parties. But politics goes beyond parties and elections. The English word ‘politics’ itself has roots in the Greek word Politiká, which is title of a work by Aristotle, a Greek philosopher from 4th century BC. It deals with ideas on how people in cities should manage their affairs.

Elections are just one part of it. What should be the written and unwritten contracts between citizens of a state is defined by politics only. What should your child be learning at school, how should your parents be living in their old age, what are your and your neighbour’s rights over a common parking space in the housing society you are living in – everything is part of politics.

At this point of time, an average Hindu would still be like – yes, so what? Where is religion in all this?

Not for you maybe, but for a Muslim it is. Or let us say – in Islam, it has to be. This is not ‘anti-Muslim rhetoric’. It is a statement of fact.

From a very ‘secular’ perspective, actually every religion will have elements that go on to impact how people should manage their affairs i.e. politics. In Hinduism too, there are dharma shastras that cover many of such aspects. But by and large, Hindus have lived individual lives, definitely in modern times, where influence, let alone control, of dharma shastras haven’t been made inescapable.

Not just that, the traditions and philosophies that have grown under the wider umbrella of Hinduism, have ended up creating a system where the various aspects of dharma – the political, the mystical, the philosophical, the theological, the rituals, etc. – have become so diverse and rich in themselves that they could appear independent of each other.

Islam is not like that.

Politics is a subset of religion when it comes to Islam

It has come to this point because Islam has been the closest to how it was when it was founded. It has ways to protect that nature. Anyone trying to “reform” Islam ends up being declared a non-Muslim or brought dead on arrival. Someone like Ambedkar in an Islamic society would be dead the second day or a fugitive in a far-off country where he finally loses an eye after a few decades.

Various preachers of Islam have taken pride in the fact that it is a “complete religion” – much like what Marxists believe about their ideology, which must impact every aspect of their lives. The reason you have a “Halal economy” is precisely because of this – because economics, like politics, is also just a derivative of the parent faith – but again, we still have millions of Hindus who think Halal is some food choice or way of cooking/slaughtering, and not a virtual parallel economic system driven by religious considerations.

This is why the questions that could appear mundane and routine to Hindus end up being subject of various fatwas (Islamic opinion). Is playing games on mobile phone allowed in Isam? Should I date that girl who wears jeans? Should my sister take up the job of air hostess? And there are so many more. Forget Bangladesh, just search on Deoband’s website back home. A Hindu might find such things funny, but they are closer home than what you think.

Not just Islamic preachers, even an average Muslim takes pride in Islam being a complete and perfect religion. Hindus on the other hand take pride in Hinduism being a religion where nothing is mandatory, that it is a just a way of life, where you can pick and choose as per your convenience – this claim is seen with both despise and derision from an Islamic eye.

In short, politics or the thoughts and beliefs around how people should manage their affairs as collective, is very much part of Islam. Why else do you think every mass of land becomes an Islamic nation i.e. the constitution and laws become derivative of Quran and Hadiths, as soon as Muslims in that area become a majority? Forget Islamic nations, back in India itself you have examples of how Fridays have been declared a holiday (a ‘political’ decision by the way, where local administration decides) in institutions falling in areas with substantial Muslim population.

These things happen because politics and religion are not separate things in Islam. Politics is supposed to be subservient to the faith. This is not a bug, but a feature of Islam. It’s not criticism, but actually a praise of Islam (form the Islamic point of view itself).

Thus, the entire argument, that it was motivated by politics and not religion, when it comes to Islam, goes for a toss especially when you are dealing with their treatment of non-Muslims. You can make this argument only if you want to obfuscate the facts of the matter. You can make this argument only if you are dishonest or sinister, or both.

Any reportage, historical account, or analytical piece that makes this as the central argument – whether in context of Aurangzeb, Kashmir, Bangladesh, or anywhere – should be confined to the dustbin, forever.

Bangladesh: Hefazat-e-Islam leader AFM Khalid Hossain becomes part of interim govt, read how the group spreads Hindu hate, wants to turn country into Sharia-run Taliban state

On Thursday, 8th August, Prof Muhammad Yunus assumed the office of Bangladesh forming the interim government after the country’s PM Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post amid the ‘student protests’. PM Modi extended good wishes to the newly formed interim government and asked it to ensure the safety of the Hindu community and minorities in Bangladesh which are under attack after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.

Notably, the newly formed interim government consists of 17 members including Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed; Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, the former election commissioner of Bangladesh; Dr. Md Nazrul Islam, a law professor; Adilur Rahman Khan, a human rights activist; AF Hassan Ariff, a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh; Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the Chief Executive of the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association among others.

However, one of the shocking names that have been included in the list of interim ministers is that of Islamist Abul Fayez Muhammad Khalid Hossain, popularly known as Dr AFM Khalid Hossain. Hossain has been the vice president of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh and is currently associated with the Bangladeshi Deobandi Islamic organization. The Hefazat-e-Islami is a hardline Islamist organization, whose members have been accused of persecuting Hindus in the past.

As per the local reports, Dr AFM Khalid Hossain is a Bangladeshi Deobandi Islamic scholar and an international Islamic speaker. He along with several other leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam has a history of influencing the Muslims against the Sheikh Hasina-led government and its ties with India.

He is a former vice-president of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, an editor of the periodical At-Tawheed, and assistant editor of Balagh al-Sharq. He served as the professor and chairman of the Department of Islamic History and Culture at Omargani MES College, as well as the central president of the Islami Chhatra Samaj, the Nizam-e-Islam Party’s student branch.

Hefazat-e-Islam and the rise of Islamic fundamentalism in Bangladesh

Hefazat-e-Islam was founded in Chittagong in January 2010 by Islamist Ahmad Shafi aiming to ‘safeguard’ Islam from claimed anti-Islamic initiatives. The Islamist group also aimed at abolishing secularism and propagating hard-core Islamic beliefs. The group’s formation was prompted by the 2009 Women Development Policy draft, which suggested equal inheritance rights for women.

The group is composed of up of Sunni Islamists, their madrassa network, and supporters and its leaders have always publicly advocated for political and legal reform. The group publicly attacked the secular court system and called for the establishment of an Islamic state in Bangladesh under Sharia law.

In 2013, Hefazat-e-Islam proposed a 13-point program that included gender segregation and the release of imprisoned Islamic scholars in Bangladesh. They condemned secular action, including calls for the execution of Jamaat-e-Islami officials.

The group has aimed to make Bangladesh an Islamic nation and voiced its opinions against the Sheikh Hasina-led government. The group forced the government to take action against secular activists who were allegedly engaged in anti-Islamic activities. They also forced the authorities to remove 17 stories and poetry written by secular or non-Muslim writers from Bengali textbooks. This probably has been just to propagate Islam and oppose non-Muslims in the country.

Despite this, former Hafazat-e-Islam president Shah Ahmad Shafi had an excellent working relationship with government officials. However, following Shafi’s death in 2020, a more conservative faction led by Junaid Babunagari rose to control. The faction terminated all unofficial communications with the Awami government. Despite the worsening of ties, the Awami League government attempted to engage the group rather than crack down on it. But the picture entirely changed after March 2021 when Indian PM Modi visited the country to celebrate Bangladesh’s 50 years of independence.

In March 2021, massive protests were organized and managed by Hefazat-e-Islam, leading to violence and chaos across the country. Chittagong and Brahmanbaria, in the country’s east, suffered damage to government offices and property. The violence continued even after Modi’s departure when a train and several Hindu temples were attacked in Brahmanbaria. Hefazat-e-Islamist members chanted ‘action, action, direct action’ in an ominous development. It is pertinent to mention that Jinnah’s call for ‘Direct Action’ led to the genocide of Bengali Hindus in 1946.

Islamist violence in 2021 in Bangladesh

The violent protests, which claimed the lives of many Hindus, were viewed as a danger not just to the government’s legitimacy, but also to bilateral relations with India. The incident resulted in the arrest of hundreds of members and supporters of Hefazat-e-Islam.

The Islamist organization wants to turn Bangladesh into a Taliban state

After the massive violence reported in 2021, several Hefazat-e-Islam leaders were arrested who confessed to wanting to turn Bangladesh into a Taliban state like Afghanistan if they came to power. Mamunul Haque, an influential leader of the same Islamist group confessed that he and many other Islamists associated with ideological allies had planned to dethrone the government in power and establish a Taliban state.

Funded by Islamic forces, radical Islamist outfits like Hefazat-e-Islam and Jamaat-e-Islami propagate militancy in the name of preaching Islam. They have forced organizers from Pakistan to invite their militant leaders as speakers in the past.

Radical Islamist organizations hatched conspiracies to turn Bangladesh into Taliban state

Along with Hefazat-e-Islam leaders, several leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan and Bangladesh National Party (BNP) were also arrested back in 2021 on the charges of instigating violence, attempt to murder, assault, and vandalism. Conspiracies were hatched in 2013 and in March 2021 by these radical Islamist organizations to oust the government led by Sheikh Hasina. The same was confirmed by Mahbub Alam.

Hate against Hindus being spread by Hefazat-e-Islam amid ongoing chaos

It is important to note that several leaders associated with Hafazat-e-Islam are at present also spreading hatred against the Hindus amid the ongoing Bangladesh political crisis. Islamist hate preacher of Hefazat-e-Islam, Rafiqul Islam Madani, who was arrested in the year 2021 for inciting violence and making objectionable remarks against the government uploaded a video on Facebook and attempted to spread lies and incite hate by claiming that Senior Jail Superintendent Subrata Kumar Bala of the Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail in Gazipur had open-fired at the prisoners. He, however, failed to provide any evidence to support his claims.

He said that Bala had opened fire at the prisoners resulting in many casualties. He also said that one of the prisoners had been ‘martyred’ during the fire. Madani who has a history of spreading violence further referred to Bala as an ISKCON member and ‘Sheikh Hasina’s Dalal’ and indicated that he, a Hindu was deliberately targeting the prisoners at Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail in Gazipur of Bangladesh.

After Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, several Hindu temples have been attacked at the hands of Muslims. Also, more than 50 attacks have happened against Hindus. According to X handle Voice of Bangladeshi Hindus, these attacks happened within five hours of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. Notably, the actual number of attacks could be much higher than reported in the list below. The document has listed 54 attacks.

Madani is followed by lacs of Islamists across the country who might get provoked by such hate spread against Hindus posing danger to the minority community. Madani allegedly in an attempt to justify attacks on minorities, claimed that Bala, a Hindu religious preacher had opened fire at prisoners at Gazipur.

Notably, no proof of such claims was provided by Madani.

In April 2021, Madani was arrested from his residence in Netrokona in the Mymensingh Division of Bangladesh for inciting violence and making objectionable remarks against the government. A case was lodged against the preacher at the Gaccha police station in Gazipur. On preliminary investigation, the RAB found adult content on his mobile phone and said that it proved that Madani was a ‘fraud’ preacher.

The 29-year-old Hefazat-e-Islam preacher rose to national prominence in Bangladesh through his fiery speeches against the Awami League government on YouTube. He hails from Ledirkanda village in Purbadhala Upazila. A midget by height, Rafiqul Islam Madani is known as shishu bokta (child preacher). Born into a poor family, he studied at the Jamia Hussainia Malni Madrasa and completed his master’s degree in Islamic studies (Dawra-e-Hadith) from Jamia Madani Madrasa in Dhaka in 2019.

Rafiqul Islam Madani decided to become an orator and soon reached thousands of followers through social media. He operated two madrassas in Gazipur and Netrokona. He received legal notice for using the title ‘Madani’ despite not being a graduate of the Islamic University of Madinah in Saudi Arabia. He was earlier detained in March 2021 in the Motijheel area over inciting people to lead violent protests against PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Dhaka.

In many of his videos uploaded on social media, Madani is seen provoking Muslims to die for Islam. “We have to free this country and Isla, from the hands of the Mafia government and infidels…There must be one religious Head for all Islamic institutions. Under his directions, we will paralyze the government system and free this country from the hands of the mafias. If necessary, we will cede power to the army,” he could be heard saying in one of his videos.

Rafiqul Islam Madani

Furthermore, he once instigated his followers by alleging that the student wing of the Awami League would kill him and other such preachers. Since then, several such rebellious clerics have been under the surveillance of the Intelligence agencies of Bangladesh.

Rafiqul Islam Madani also condemned Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Bangladesh in 2021, warning that his actions would prove his power or Modi’s stooges. Madani provoked Muslims to stop Modi from entering the soil of Bangladesh and to die if necessary, leading to widespread violence and destruction of Hindu temples. He also threatened to capture Delhi stating that no power or fence could stop his plans. Madani urged Muslims to keep their faith strong and face martyrdom if needed.

He incited the Muslims by saying that Sheikh Hasina was working on the terms of Hindutva and that whatever Modi wanted, happened in Bangladesh. “Today, all temples are being upgraded and the mosques here are dying. This means whoever will speak against Modi will be tortured and jailed… In the name of lockdown, they will shut down mosques and madrassas. We will not follow anything… We want this country to be a true Islamic Republic,” Rafiqul Islam Madani said.

Conclusion

Hefazat-e-Islam in Bangladesh has been involved in violent rallies and clashes with law authorities, raising questions about their inclination to use force to achieve their objectives to make the country an Islamic nation. This potential for violence is a direct threat to public safety and order especially when it comes to Bangladeshi Hindus and other minorities. Their conservative Islamic agenda could lead to increased marginalization and possible persecution of these groups.

The emergence of part of Hefazat-e-Islam in the current interim government might lead to the increased radicalization of Bangladesh’s youth. Their hardline ideology and control over religious schools (madrasas) may foster extremist Islamic views, destabilizing the country’s social fabric involving minorities.

The growth of Hefazat-e-Islam marks a fundamental shift in Bangladesh’s sociopolitical landscape, calling into question the country’s secular, inclusive, and democratic foundation. Their expanding Islamic influence raises concerns about Bangladesh’s future course, notably regarding human rights, minority protection, and the preservation of secular norms.

Over 4,000 dead bodies stolen from crematoriums, medical labs: Chinese crime ring accused of illegally harvesting corpses for bone grafts

A Chinese criminal network reportedly stole over 4,000 corpses from crematoriums and medical facilities to extract their bones for dental grafts. Dozens of people have been accused by prosecutors in northern China in connection with the decade long conspiracy that found bodies intended for cremation instead sold to a state-affiliated biomaterials company, one of the biggest in the nation, as reported by South China Morning Post. A prominent criminal attorney shared information of the case on social media on 8th August, sparking public outrage.

The authorities in Taiyuan, the capital of the northern province of Shanxi, are looking into claims that the bones have been utilized to create allogeneic bone transplants, which are usually produced from bones taken during surgery, according to Yi Shenghua, president of the law company Beijing Brave Lawyer. Sichuan Hengpu Technology Co. and Shanxi Osteorad Biomaterial Co.’s proprietors and opeartors are charged with obtaining approximately 4,000 cadavers through unethical ways, which enabled the former to earn up to $53 million in profits between 2015 and 2023.

Established in 1999, Shanxi Osteorad was a division of the China Institute for Radiation Protection in Taiyuan, which is a part of the Beijing-based state-owned China National Nuclear Corp. It is one of the biggest suppliers of bone substitutes and grafts in the nation, with a market estimated to be valued at half a billion dollars by the end of the decade. The maker of medical devices, Sichuan Hengpu, is also owned by its largest shareholder.

According to a leaked May indictment by the Taiyuan People’s Procuratorate in Shanxi province, the corpse trafficking covered at least seven provinces and nearly a dozen localities, where dead bodies were either transferred, dissected, stored, or turned into material devices for bone-grafting procedures. According to a representative for the Taiyuan municipal procuratorate, prosecutors are probing whether an unlawful group was “stealing and reselling corpses for profit.” A string of arrests by anti-corruption agents has put the state-run funeral business in the public eye.

The evidence, tagged as “prosecution opinion,” was sent to Yi by a “insider” and was “authentic,” he told the Shanghai-based news portal, The Paper. According to his social media post, a business called Shanxi Aorui Biomaterials is accused of purchasing dead bodies and limbs from the provinces of Shandong, Guangxi and Sichuan without authorization and utilizing them to make bone transplants. He added that the company made 380 million yuan (US$53 million) during this time, primarily from the sale of the bones used in dental grafts. Yi’s paperwork reveal that the police confiscated over 18 tonnes of bones in addition to over 34,000 semi-completed and finished goods.

The general manager of the company, a suspect with the surname Su, reportedly admitted to the authorities that he had stolen over 4,000 human remains from cemeteries in Yunnan, Chongqing, Guizhou and Sichuan. According to the report, the remains were roughly dissected by the personnel at crematoriums in Shuifu city, Guizhou’s Shiqian county, Chongqing’s Banan district, and Sichuan’s Daying county in order to send them to Su’s company for additional processing. At least 75 people are suspected in the case, including shareholders, doctors and funeral home administrators. Prosecutors informed the Shanghai news site The Paper that the extensive probe was still ongoing.

Allegations were made against Shanxi Osteorad for manipulating donor contracts in order to provide allogeneic bone implant material for Chinese patients. Prosecutors reported that its employees mistreated cadavers as well. The National Medical Products Administration is in charge of the biomedical devices market in China. The Ministry of Civil Affairs is in charge of the funeral industry.

For many years, in an effort to conserve land, Chinese authorities have promoted cremations, little funerals and graves at sea. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, families were unable to obtain customary funeral ceremonies, which led to an increase in cremations. However, the indictment asserted that four funeral homes in the Chongqing municipality and the southwestern provinces of Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan took money from relatives for cremation services before selling the bodies to two hospitals for storage and dissection. Some family members, according to the prosecution, paid for the cremation services but did not want to take the ashes home. Other times, cadavers that had not been claimed were chosen instead.

At least 450 bodies were acquired by a staff member at Guilin Medical University’s anatomy department from three of the funeral businesses listed in the complaint. After purchasing the bodies at $125 apiece, the employee sold more than 300 of them to Shanxi Osteorad for $1,400 apiece. At least ten bodies were allegedly processed and sold to Shanxi Osteorad for between $1,400 and $3,000 each by a transplant surgeon at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University in the eastern Shandong province of China.

Seventy-five more people were reportedly apprehended throughout the inquiry, according to the documents. It is believed that cremation employees dismember victims in order to sell Yi the bones. The inquiry is also looking into allegations that the company was sold unlawful corpses by the liver center at Qingdao University Hospital in Shandong. The records mentioned the director of the liver center, Li Baoxing, as a suspect.

The director has previously received numerous accolades from the government for his contributions to medicine, and the State Council named him one of China’s “Model Workers” in 2005, along with hundreds of other individuals. The Guangxi region’s Guilin civil affairs bureau informed The Paper that it was digging into allegations that three funeral businesses and a medical college sold bodies to a criminal outfit.

The scandal was brought to the attention of authorities in September 2023, as reported by The Paper, when the Guilin teaching hospital’s faculty member’s irregular earnings were subject to inquiry by China’s National Audit Office. According to the report, Chinese authorities confiscated 29 cars, 16 houses and more than 34,000 biomaterial products in addition to more than 18 tons of semi-finished goods. Every suspect allegedly confirmed their involvement.

Patients who lack adequate bone density for grafts can receive allogeneic grafts, however, the bone is typically harvested from willing patients undergoing procedures like hip replacements. Bone grafting is a medical industry procedure used to treat serious fractures. Although bone tissue can be taken directly from the patient (an autograft), due to potential risks, it is usually taken from cadavers (an allograft) under close regulatory supervision and with donor agreement.

Houses looted, children kidnapped, family members assaulted: Hindu women in Bangladesh narrate their ordeal amid Islamist onslaught

Since the fall of Dhaka on Monday (5th August), Islamists have left no stone unturned to target Hindu homes, businesses and temples.

In a video shared by ‘Voice of Bangladeshi Hindus’, a woman was heard saying, “They came and looted our house. They took away our money, gold and whatever valuable that was left with us. They also abducted my 14-year-old boy.”

“I don’t even know their identity. They vandalised our house and took everything away. They also beat us severely,” she narrated while breaking down in tears.

A man standing in the vicinity pointed out a mob of 10-12 men ambushed their house. He said, “They beat me and made me sign on an empty stamp paper. They also sought a ransom of Tk 10 lakh to return the boy.”

The incident took place in Jessore district in southwestern Bangladesh.

In another Facebook video, one Hindu woman narrated how her family was targeted overnight by Islamist mobs. She stated that her 15-year-old brother was assaulted at knifepoint. They also stole Tk 3 lakh from the family.

“Look how they have vandalised our houses…Is this the work of a human? They are claiming that this is an independent country now. See what they have done to my underage brother,” she narrated the ordeal.

“It’s a curse to be a Sanatani in Bangladesh. I, as a student, am asking why my house is being targeted,” the Hindu woman continued. She pointed out that 3-4 other Hindu houses were attacked in a similar fashion.

“Who will give us justice? Who is there to protect us Hindus? Today, they are attacking me. Tomorrow, they will attack you. If we do not stand up to it now, then, we will not be able to survive tomorrow.”

OpIndia has documented cases of atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh by Islamists masquerading as ‘pro-demcoracy, anti-quota and anti-government’ protestors.

More than 200 killed in Islamist onslaught

Following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina, Islamists unleashed mayhem in Bangladesh. A total of 232 people were killed until the evening of 7th August. The total death toll has now crossed 550 in the past three weeks.

Supreme Court grants bail to Manish Sisodia in liquor policy case, AAP leader to walk out of jail after 17 months

The Supreme Court on August 9, 2024, granted regular bail to Delhi’s former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia in the liquor policy case. The senior AAP leader will walk out of jail after 17 months.

The bail was granted in cases filed by CBI and ED probing the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy. As per reports, noting that the trial against Sisodia hasn’t even begun in these 17 months, the SC noted that Sisodia has been deprived of his right to a speedy trial.

A bench of justices BR Gavai and KV Vishwanath have ordered Sisodia to furnish a bail bond of Rs 10 lakhs with 2 surities, surrender his passport and report twice a week (on Mondays and Thursdays) before the concerned investigating officer in the case. He has also been asked to not to make any attempts to influence witnesses and tamper with evidence.

As per reports, the ED had requested the court to restrict Sisodia from visiting the Delhi Secretariat and the CM’s office, as Kejriwal was asked to before his conditional bail for campaigning in the Lok Sabha elections.

However, the SC refused to grant the request. The CBI and ED’s argument that Sisodia’s bail application in the SC was not maintainable and that he should approach the trial court for the same was also dismissed by the apex court.

On October 30, 2023, the SC had rejected Sisodia’s bail plea but had kept a window open in its order, saying that he can revive his bail plea if the trial fails to make any significant progress in the next 6-8 months.

On May 21, Sisodia’s bail plea on the grounds of delay was rejected by the Delhi High Court.

The Delhi Excise Policy case

Sisodia was arrested by the ED in February last year in connection to the Delhi liquor policy case.

The liquor policy for 2021-22 was put into effect by the Delhi administration on 17th November 2021, however, it was cancelled at the end of September 2022 due to accusations of corruption. According to the agencies, the new regulation led to monopolisation and gave economic advantages to people who weren’t eligible for liquor licenses.

On the other hand, Manish Sisodia and the Delhi administration have denied any wrongdoing and claimed that the new policy would have increased the state’s excise revenue.

IIT Guwahati researchers develop innovative machine learning framework ‘LEAP’ for the semiconductor industry

0

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati researchers have made significant advancements in the field of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) with the development of an innovative machine learning (ML) framework named ‘LEAP’.

This cutting-edge solution enhances the design process of Integrated Circuits (ICs), a critical component in the $600 billion semiconductor industry that powers modern electronic devices.

In a press release, IIT Guwahati said that, the creation of ICs relies heavily on EDA software, which transforms high-level designs into a manufacturing format known as Graphic Design System (GDS). However, designing ICs involves navigating complex problems that can be challenging to solve.

Traditional methods often use heuristic techniques–quick problem-solving strategies that find acceptable solutions without necessarily achieving perfection.

While these approaches help balance design quality and runtime, they often yield less-than-ideal results.

To address these challenges, Prof Chandan Karfa, Associate Professor and Dr Sukanta Bhattacharjee, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Guwahati along with their BTech students Chandrabhushan Reddy Chigarapally, Harshwardhan Nitin Bhakkad, have leveraged machine learning to improve efficiency in IC design.

The other collaborator is Dr Animesh Basak Chowdhury of New York University, USA. Their LEAP framework streamlines the technology mapping process within EDA.

Rather than evaluating thousands of potential configurations, LEAP intelligently identifies and prioritizes the most promising options, reducing the number of configurations the mapping tool must consider by over 50 percent.

Speaking about the research, Prof Chandan Karfa said, “Our framework not only speeds up the mapping process but also improves the performance of the circuits. We have reduced the runtime of the EDA tool by 50 percent and achieved a 2 percent reduction in clock period without increasing the area required for the circuits, making our solution a significant advancement in electronic design automation.”

LEAP estimates the delay for various configurations and selects only the top ten options for each node in the design, compared to the traditional method, which typically evaluates around 250 configurations. This targeted approach streamlines the workflow and enhances overall efficiency.

In extensive testing on 21 different designs, the LEAP framework demonstrated a 50 percent improvement in runtime while reducing the number of configurations checked by over 51 percent. Compared to exhaustive mapping methods, LEAP achieves similar performance results while using 63 percent fewer configurations, significantly improving the runtime of the open-source ABC EDA tool.

This research holds real-world implications for the semiconductor industry, which is essential for the development of electronic devices such as smartphones and computers.

By enhancing the design process for ICs through the LEAP framework, researchers can reduce design time and improve performance. This translates to faster, more efficient electronic devices with lower energy consumption, ultimately benefiting consumers and driving innovation across various technology sectors.

The results of this promising work have been published in the ACM/IEEE International Conference on Computer-Aided Design (ICCAD 2024).

Harish Salve, a renowned Indian lawyer, will represent the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) hearing on Friday, regarding the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Paris Olympics.

Salve’s expertise will be crucial in addressing the legal and procedural aspects of the dispute.

Salve, former Solicitor General of India and King’s Counsel, confirmed to ANI that he has been engaged by the IOA to represent Phogat at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The ad hoc hearing at CAS is scheduled to start at 9:00 AM Paris time (12:30 PM IST).

The CAS has established an ad hoc division in Paris, led by President Michael Lenard from the US, to handle cases during the Olympics. This division is located within the Paris judicial court in the 17th arrondissement.

Following her disqualification from the Paris Olympics final, Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling on Thursday.

In an emotional post on X, Phogat expressed her sense of defeat and gratitude, stating, “Maa kushti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness.”

Wrestling Federation of India President, Sanjay Singh, responded by urging Phogat to reconsider her decision.

Speaking to ANI, Singh emphasized that Phogat’s announcement seemed hasty and suggested that she should discuss her retirement with her family, the Federation, and other sports officials upon returning to India.

He highlighted her significant contributions and performance in the sport, indicating that it would be premature to make such a decision in the heat of the moment.
