Greater Noida: Yogi govt clears proposal for setting up Metro University, private investment to create jobs

The Uttar Pradesh government cleared an important proposal related to higher education at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, 7th April. The meeting was chaired by CM Yogi Adityanath

The cabinet approved the setting up of a private university, ‘Metro University’, in Greater Noida, marking another step towards expanding educational infrastructure in the state.

The decision has been taken under the provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Private Universities Act, 2019. Yogendra Upadhyay, the Higher Education Minister of Uttar Pradesh, said that the act gives the much-needed platform for establishing and running private universities in the state.

He further informed that there had been a proposal for setting up the university put forth by Sunhill Healthcare Private Limited, located in Noida. After going through the proposal from both legal and technical perspectives, the decision to pass the proposal was taken.

Modern campus planned in Greater Noida

According to media reports, Metro University will be built on around 26 acres of land allotted by the Greater Noida Authority. The campus is expected to have modern infrastructure, including smart classrooms, research centres, and advanced digital facilities to support quality learning.

To make the project operational, the government will amend the schedule of the Uttar Pradesh Private Universities Act. An ordinance named the ‘Uttar Pradesh Private Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026’ will be introduced, after which the sponsoring institution will receive formal approval to run the university.

Focus on job-oriented education

The new university is expected to offer courses that are more aligned with current industry needs. Students will get opportunities to study subjects like Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Management, and other professional programmes. The aim is to help students build skills that improve their chances of getting jobs.

Officials believe that this move will also support the government’s larger plan of turning Uttar Pradesh into a major education hub. More private investment in education is likely to create jobs and support local development. Greater Noida, in particular, is expected to grow as an important centre for education and knowledge-based industries.

The Higher Education Minister said the government is focusing on improving the quality of education while also expanding access. Efforts are being made to ensure that good and affordable education reaches students from all sections of society.

The cabinet also approved a major relief for Shiksha Mitras and part-time instructors. Responding to their long-pending demand, the government has increased their monthly honorarium.

The payment for Shiksha Mitras, which had been fixed at ₹10,000 since 2017, has now been raised to ₹18,000. This increase is expected to benefit a large number of education workers across the state. Officials said the hike will improve their financial condition and also motivate them to contribute better to the education system.
