How does Maha Kumbh look from the Space Station? NASA astronaut shares stunning photos

The Maha Kumbh 2025 is underway with the UP government’s organisation and management being praised around the world. The Maha Kumbh 2025, held every 144 years, is constantly in the news for the sheer numbers of pilgrims coming to Prayagraj, the religious fervour and the vibrant display of faith of an ancient religion.

NASA astronaut Don Pettit, currently at the International Space Station along with Sunita Williams and others, shared some stunning images of the Maha Kumbh 2025 captured from the ISS.

“2025 Maha Kumbh Mela Ganges River pilgrimage from the ISS at night. The largest human gathering in the world is well lit”, Pettit posted on X. His image showed a stunningly lit tent city of Prayagraj near the Sangam area and the entire stretch. It also highlighted the efforts that have been taken to keep the Maha Kumbh well-lit and well-provisioned.

Pettit is well known not only as a scientist and engineer astronaut but for his orbital astrophotography too. The International Space Station orbits the Earth at the speed of 28,000 km per hour, at a height of 400 km from Earth. It is equipped with high-power, state-of-the-art cameras to capture images of the Earth.
