A 25-year-old nurse working at a medical college in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut was strangled to death by her former colleague, who had been pressuring her to marry him for a long time. Police have arrested Sajida, the accused man’s sister and one of his friends in connection with the case, while the main accused remains absconding.
The victim, identified as Anjali Sharma, was working as a contractual nurse at the medical college in Meerut. According to police, the accused, Sufiyan, had earlier worked at the same hospital as a ward attendant. Investigators said the two came into contact at work during that time.
According to media reports, Sufiyan had been repeatedly harassing Anjali and was forcing her to marry him despite knowing that she was already married and had a five-year-old son. Some reports also claimed he had been pressuring her to convert to Islam.
Anjali left for duty but never reached the hospital
According to police, Anjali left her home in Jagriti Vihar on Thursday morning, 21st May, around 11 am for duty at the medical college. However, she never reached the hospital.
Investigators said Sufiyan took her to a rented room in the Lohiya Nagar area, where an argument broke out between them. Police suspect the accused once again pressured her regarding marriage and religion, and during the confrontation, strangled her to death with a rope or cloth. Sufiyan’s sister Sajida was also present at the spot.

SP City Vinayak Gopal Bhosale said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that Anjali had gone to the Lohiya Nagar area on Thursday morning, where a confrontation took place between her, Sufiyan, and Sajida. During the altercation, the accused allegedly strangled her to death.”
Body dumped outside hospital emergency ward
Police said after the murder, Sufiyan, with the help of his sister Sajida, disposed of the body. The two placed Anjali’s body in an e-rickshaw and took it to the medical college itself.
According to investigators, the e-rickshaw driver was told that the woman was unwell and needed to be taken to the hospital urgently. Around 1 pm, Sajida abandoned the body outside the emergency ward and fled from the spot.
Doctors later declared the woman dead, creating panic inside the hospital. After the victim was identified, her family members were informed. Anjali’s brother, Pradeep, immediately suspected foul play and informed the police, following which an investigation was launched.
CCTV footage helped police crack the case
Police said CCTV footage and local questioning helped them to arrest Sajida first. During interrogation, she confessed to helping her brother transport and dump the body.
Later, police also arrested Sufiyan’s friend Jabar Singh in connection with the case. However, the main accused is still on the run. “Multiple teams are conducting raids at different locations. The main accused will be arrested soon,” SP City Bhosale said.
Relationship, harassment and growing tensions
Police sources said Anjali and Sufiyan had known each other for a long time and were frequently in contact. After Sufiyan lost his job some time ago, both of them had rented a room together in Lohiya Nagar, where they used to meet regularly.
Neighbours told police that the two had been arguing frequently over the last few days and that another heated argument took place on Thursday morning before the incident.
Anjali had married Sunny, a resident of Meerut’s Sector-8 locality, in 2018. The couple had a five-year-old son. Due to family-related issues, she had been staying with her brother for the past year.
Police have registered a case under serious charges, including murder, and further investigation is underway.
