UP Police nab scammer ‘Jay Singh Rathore’ who defrauded people on Twitter to the tune of ₹1.5 lakhs: Here is the backstory

In a major development on Friday (25th September), the Agra police in Uttar Pradesh have arrested scammer Ajayveer Singh, who went by the identity of ‘Jay Singh Rathore’.

In a tweet, the Agra Police Commissionerate stated, “A complaint was received regarding the individual named Ajayveer Singh alias Jai Singh Rathore, who, through social media, falsely claimed that his 12-year-old sister was suffering from a disease like ‘Glaucoma’/‘Vitreous Haemorrhage,’ prepared forged documents in the name of treatment for her eyes, toyed with the emotions of the general public, and improperly obtained funds (Crowdfunding) from people.”

“The Bah Police Station immediately took cognisance of the said complaint and, based on the received written report, registered a case against the concerned individual under relevant sections, arrested the accused, and further legal proceedings are underway,” it emphasised.

The Background of the Case

On 21st September, an X handle ‘Jay Singh’ bearing the username ‘Jayrathore 9068’ posted a series of tweets claiming that his minor sister needed immediate eye surgery. He had shared the alleged ‘Aadhaar card’ of his sister and fake medical documents attributed to a Shroff Eye Centre.

The scammer was successful in raising more than ₹1.5 lakhs within a day through his emotional story about his 12-year-old sister being at risk of losing her eyesight. Thereafter, he removed the payment details, claiming that his family received more money than what was required for the surgery.

The medical documents that ‘Jay Singh Rathore’ posted raised doubts about their authenticity, after which another Twitter user ‘Haruto’ reached out to the Shroff Eye Centre. The medical facility categorically denied the fake patient record and prescription attributed to it.

In an Instagram story, the Shroff Eye Centre clarified, “It has come to our knowledge that some person/s has created a fake patient, prescription and estimate sheet on our letterheads and is asking NGOs and individuals on WhatsApp for help. Please be aware and SHARE to prevent people from becoming victims of this deception.”

Ajayveer Singh had initially pretended to be a 16-year-old boy. To make his story believable, the scammer claimed that his family had spent more than ₹2.5 lakhs for the victim’s treatment and that he had arranged an additional ₹50,000 from relatives.

Soon, the fraudster was called out on X, forcing him to join Twitter Spaces and issue clarifications. He later claimed that he needed the money to treat his father and had wrongly used his sister’s name. The scammer called it a ‘mistake’ and vowed to return the donors’ money.

It must be mentioned that Congress supporter ‘Dr Nimo Yadav’ and UPSC teacher turned ‘political commentator’ Amit Khilor had extended support to the scammer initially.
