The Supreme Court’s ruling has given states greater flexibility to design reservation policies that address internal inequalities within SC and ST communities.
"No person who professes a religion other than Hindu, Sikh or Buddhist shall be a member of Scheduled Caste. Conversion to any other religion results in loss of Scheduled Caste status," ruled the Supreme Court.

Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed and others claimed “upper-caste goons” killed a Dalit boy in Greater Noida. However, the accused were from the Meena community, a Scheduled Tribe, exposing politically motivated misinformation surrounding the case.
The announcement was symbolic, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, widely hailed by some sections as the architect of the Indian Constitution.
The Union Minister's remarks came days after the Supreme Court ruled that states have the power to sub-classify Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). The top court had also observed that states can evolve a policy for identifying the creamy layer, even from the SCs and STs to exclude them from the benefit of affirmative action.
