Vice President Venkaiah Naidu rejects impeachment motion against CJI

Vice President and Rajya Sabha speaker M Venkaiah Naidu has rejected the impeachment motion against CJI Deepak Mishra. According to reports, the Vice President stated that there is no merit in the charges against the CJI.

According to reports, the Congress-led opposition has stated that they will move to the Supreme Court if the impeachment notice is rejected by the upper house. On Friday, 64 members of Parliament belonging to seven political parties had signed the impeachment motion against CJI Deepak Mishra. MPs belonging to Congress, NCP, Muslim League, CPM, CPI, Samajwadi Party and BSP had signed the motion.

According to the section 124(4) of the constitution, impeachment motion can be brought against the CJI on the grounds of misbehaviour or incapacity. The Congress has led the group to bring this motion against the CJI. Experts agree that Congress has been leading a full frontal assault on the judiciary after some of the recent verdicts went against their interests.

Several political personalities have reacted over the Vice President’s rejection of the motion.

Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad had stated that the impeachment motion listed five grounds of misbehaviour and is based on article 124(4) and 217 of the constitution.

According to reports, even within the Congress, two factions were created over the impeachment motion and senior leaders like Veerappa Moily, P Chidambaram and Abhishek Manu Singhvi were against the motion. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had slammed the Congress in a social media post stating that Congress is trying to use the impeachment motion as a political too and trying to intimidate the judiciary.
