Lucknow HC bench dismisses petition to offer Namaz at Ram Janmabhoomi, petitioners fined Rs 5 lakh

The High Court bench termed the petition as a 'publicity stunt' aimed to waste the court's time.

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has dismissed a petition seeking permission to offer Namaz at Ram Janambhoomi and fined the Al Rehman Trust Rs 5 Lakh saying ‘petition’s aim is to create unrest and waste court’s time’.

The trust had argued that Muslims should be allowed to offer Namaz at the disputed site since Hindus are also permitted to offer their prayers.

As per reports, the Lucknow HC cited 1993 Supreme Court judgment on the status quo of the disputed site and asserted that 67 acres of the disputed land was acquired by the government.

The Al Rehman Trust, based in Raebareli, works for the promotion of Islam. The Trust relied on the judgment of the Allahabad High Court in 2010 which had awarded Muslims one-third of the disputed site. The Court observed that the petition was merely a publicity stunt and dismissed it. The Court has also instructed the DM of Ayodhya District to ensure that the fined amount is recovered from the said trust.
