On Saturday, 1st August, US President Donald Trump said that the United States and Israel have decided to put planned military strikes against Iran on hold after receiving a request from Tehran and several other countries in the Middle East. According to Trump, both sides have agreed on the basic framework of a possible deal that could bring the ongoing war to an end.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the proposed agreement would include the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes for oil and energy supplies. He also claimed that the deal would address concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme.
“The U.S.A. is locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran, at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II. Despite this, we have just been asked by Iran, and other Middle Eastern Countries, to hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to. This would include the Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat,” Trump wrote.

He added, “Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL.”
Trump says Israel also supports diplomatic efforts
Trump said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also agreed to delay military action while efforts continue to finalise the agreement with Iran. According to the US President, both countries are now focused on securing a deal that could bring an end to the conflict.
“Get to work, everybody, and get it DONE,” Trump said in his post.
Trump also referred to the earlier joint US-Israeli military operation carried out in February, during which Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed.
Fresh strike plans were reportedly under discussion
Trump’s latest announcement came just a day after he warned that the US was prepared to launch another major attack on Iran.
Speaking during a Cabinet meeting at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland on Friday, Trump said, “We’ll be hitting him very hard and, you know, at some point they’re going to say, ‘We just can’t take it anymore’.”

US media reports later claimed that Washington was considering fresh military action against Iran. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Trump had ordered preparations for another strike aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran. Meanwhile, CBS News reported that the United States and Israel were discussing joint attacks on Iran’s energy-related infrastructure, possibly over the weekend, although final approval had not yet been given.
Conflict escalated after ceasefire efforts failed
The latest developments come after earlier diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran failed to stop the conflict. The two countries had signed a preliminary agreement in June aimed at ending the war and stopping military operations, including in Lebanon, while working towards a final peace deal within 60 days.
However, tensions rose again after the US accused Iran of targeting commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz and resumed military strikes last month. Iran responded by attacking American military installations in Gulf countries.
On 8th July, Trump declared that the earlier agreement was “over”, while Tehran accused Washington of “violating all its commitments” and announced that it was suspending the memorandum of understanding. Since then, the conflict has continued, although Trump’s latest statement suggests that fresh diplomatic efforts are now underway.
