On January 8, famous culinary expert Pazhayidom Mohanan Namboothiri announced he would not participate in the tender for serving food at school fests in the state. His decision came after Namboothiri was attacked for his Brahmin identity. Notably, he has been serving food at school fests for over 16 years and has served over two crore students to date.

Namboothiri, who is known for his culinary expertise, expressed his displeasure over communal hatred. He said, “Supervising the kitchen has become tiresome. I will not be cooking for the Kerala School Kalolsavam anymore. I am wondering how I will face a generation that scatters seeds of communal hatred, even in matters concerning food in youthful verve. This makes me very uncomfortable.”

Namboothiri spoke to Manorama News about the controversy over serving vegetarian food during the school fest. He added, “The school fest kitchens were my treasure. However, when the new generation of sycophants come forward with these allegations, it is not right of me to hold on to that jewel.”

Namboothiri has been serving food at school youth festivals, science festivals, and athletic meets in the state for over 16 years. He said, “I have served food to more than 2.25 crore students. I am satisfied I was able to serve food to those tired participants after their performances. But this allegation, which I think was targeted at me personally, pained me a lot. I can understand if the allegation was against the quality of the food. But they should not have given a religious colour to it.”

He further noted that the State Government decided to serve vegetarian food, and he had no objection to preparing non-veg food for the festival. “If the government takes a call to include non-vegetarian food in the menu, then there was no scope for any complaint,” Namboothiri added.

Namboothiri further explained that when food is prepared for large-scale events, it is challenging to prepare and serve healthy non-vegetarian food. There were 9,000 students at the Kalolsavam, and a total of 24,000 people were served food during the festival.

Interestingly, Namboothiri noted that he had served non-vegetarian food in the state athletic and games meet. “Apart from that, I have not taken an order for any meat preparations,” he clarified. It was clear that Namboothiri did not object to serving non-veg food, but it was the State government’s decision to go with the vegetarian menu.

Namboothiri added, “For over half a decade, I have been serving non-vegetarian food at sports meets. I was never hesitant to take up the job citing my religion or caste. When it comes to serving food, all are alike for us.”

Following the controversy, Namboothiri has decided not to participate in the tendering process for future state youth festivals. He would not be serving food at the South Indian Science Fair at Thrissur scheduled from January 26 to January 31.

Namboothiri even had to restrict entry to his kitchen, fearing attacks on him. “I cannot perform with such fear. That is why I have decided not to participate in kalolsavam,” he said.

About the controversy

On January 4, Arun Kumar, a famous TV news anchor and a professor at Kerala University, published a post on his Facebook account condemning the decision to serve only vegetarian food during the School Youth Festival organised by State Government in Kozhikkode, Kerala.

The contract was given to Namboothiri after following the due process. It was the government’s decision to serve only vegetarian food during the festival. However, because Namboothiri is a Brahmin, it was turned into an anti-Brahmin agenda.

Notably, every year vegetarian food is served during the festival. In his post, Kumar accused Namboothiri of imposing vegetarianism on others by not serving non-veg food during the festival. In his post in Malayalam, Kumar claimed that most of the students attending the festival were non-vegetarian, but only vegetarian food was served. He added casteism and the concept of purity and impurity to the rhetoric. He said, “This is a school festival food pavilion, not a place to serve vegetarian prasad. There is a true renaissance in a place like this, not when a Brahmin reaches the kitchen but when a variety of food gets served when there is no imposition of beliefs of purity.”

His post sparked a controversy in the state, and the government announced they would consider serving non-vegetarian food from the following year. Education Minister and senior CPI(M) leader V Sivankutty claimed, “My idea was to give biryani to the children”. In a Facebook post, he said, “This is a festival of diversity and the Education Department will initiate steps to promote that. Over the years, only vegetarian dishes have been served at the festival. This is going to change and from next year, there will be non-vegetarian food at the table.”

It is evident that while the chef was not against serving non-vegetarian food at the fest, just because he was a Brahmin, controversy was created, claiming he was imposing so-called vegetarianism on the students participating in the fest.

Muslims want vegetarian food to be served

While people like Arun Kumar opposed serving only vegetarian food, the Muslim community vouched for vegetarian food. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) called the controversy unfortunate. They urged the government to continue serving vegetarian food during the fest. IUML’s KPA Majeed said the demand for non-veg food came from the Left circle and accused LDF government of disturbing harmony in the society.

He said, “It’s unfortunate that such a controversy came up with regard to the food served for the state school youth festival. The whole responsibility lies with the State government and the Education Minister. The food has been served for the youth festival for many years and there was never a controversy like this.”

He added, “Vegetarian food can be consumed by everyone but some people may not be able to eat non-vegetarian dishes and this is why the youth festival has only one kitchen serving vegetarian dishes. There is no need to divide the kitchen and it’s impractical. The Minister, without discussing with anyone, declared that non-vegetarian dishes will be served and it’s not right.”

A shocking revelation has come to the fore in the disappearance case of a 9-year-old child named Chaita Kohla from Sayali, Dadra and Nagar Haveli (DNH). The police have arrested three persons accused of killing the 9-year-old minor in ‘human sacrifice’ for black magic rituals to bring themselves economic prosperity and power.

On December 31, a mutilated body of a child was found in the Daman Ganga canal passing near Karwad in Vapi. Initially, the police assumed the case of a homicide. However, after investigation, the police found that the child was killed as a part of black magic rituals allegedly performed by the accused. 

The child had gone missing on December 29, when his family filed a missing person complaint at the Sayali village police station. The family said that the boy had gone missing from their house’s courtyard. They searched through the neighbourhood and in the village but could not find him, the family said in its complaint to the police. 

Later, the police found a child’s leg and head near Sayali’s cremation ground in Dadra Nagar Haveli. The family identified them to be of their child based on the thread tied to his leg. The probe found that the 9-year-old was killed as a part of black magic rituals carried out by the accused to amass wealth and power. 

The police revealed that the boy was ‘sacrificed’ by the accused for black magic rituals. An investigation by the Dadra Nagar Haveli Police revealed that 53-year-old Ramesh Shanwar, 28-year-old Shailesh Kohkare and a minor accused were involved in the murder of this innocent child. 

Reportedly, the arrested minor is the mastermind behind the killing of Chaita. As per police, he lured the 9-year-old Chaita to come along with him and sought the help of his two friends, Shailesh and Ramesh, to kill him and gain monetary benefit from his death.

“The detained minor had kidnapped Chaita. The detainee said that he had seen videos on YouTube on how to carry out a human sacrifice to get monetary gains. Both Shailesh and Ramesh helped him to kill the boy and carry out rituals,” DNH Superintendent of Police R P Meena said, adding that the 16-year -old boy has been sent to Children’s Remand Home in Surat.

The police recovered sharp weapons from the accused and registered a case against them under IPC sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) and 120(b) (criminal conspiracy).

On Monday, January 9, the Kerala High Court observed that a worshipper of Swami Ayyappa is duty-bound to exercise their right to worship with respect to the tradition of Sabarimala temple. The court also noted that worshippers should not be allowed to carry posters and photographs of celebrities and politicians inside the temple’s sanctum sanctorum or Swami Sannidhanam.

A bench comprising Justice Anil K Narendran and Justice P.G. Kumar directed the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) to ensure that the ceremonies and rites are performed in accordance with the prevalent traditions of the temple. 

Citing the court ruling in Sajeev Sastharam Vs State of Kerala which held that the worshippers are duty-bound to exercise their ‘right to worship’ in an accustomed manner and subject to tradition and practice prevalent in Sabarimala, the bench said that no pilgrim could be permitted entry to Sabarimala Sannidhanam, through Pathinettampadi or to have darshan in front of the Sopanam of Sabarimala Sannidhanam, carrying posters and photographs of celebrities, politicians, etc.

“The restrictions imposed at Sabarimala during Maasa Poojas and festival seasons, including Mandala-Makaravilakku festival season, are applicable to all ‘worshippers’, who are duty-bound to obey such restrictions, in order to ensure a smooth flow of pilgrims in front of the Sopanam of Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple and darshan for all pilgrims in the queue,” the court ruled.

The bench further ordered TDB to ensure that none of the worshipers carries posters and huge photographs of celebrities and politicians inside the Swami Sannidhanam. The court order noted that on average 80,000-90,000 pilgrims visit Sabarimala each day, which means 70 to 80 pilgrims will have to move through ‘Pathinettampadi’ (holy 18 steps) and through the barricades in front of the Sopanam of Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple in a minute. Therefore, if they carry large posters or any such items, they cause disturbance and slow down the queue. As a result, the court asked the temple authorities to ensure that nobody is allowed in carrying such large posters and photographs.

The High Court ordered the Kerala state government and the Travancore Devaswom Board to take necessary steps to ensure that every worshipper of Lord Ayyappa exercises his right of worship at Sabarimala Sannidhanam, in an accustomed manner and subject to the practice and tradition in Sabarimala.

It is notable that the High Court in December had suo motu registered a Devaswom Board Petition (DBP) on the basis of a complaint filed on November 30, 2022. 

In a plea mailed to the Registrar General of the High Court, a devotee complained about pilgrims bringing posters and photographs of celebrities to Sabarimala Swami Sannidhanam. The complainant also attached three photographs of devotees carrying posters of politicians and movie stars including that of late Kannada superstar Puneeth Rajkumar, and Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar’s Thunivu movie poster, to the temple’s sanctum sanctorum.

Besides posters and photographs, the court also took into account the news that a drummer named Sivamani played drums in front of the Sopanam of Sabarimala Sannidhanam. The court directed TDB to ensure that pilgrims do not play drums or any other musical instrument in front of the Sopanam of the temple’s sanctum sanctorum.

In a bookshop called Bert’s Books in Swindon in England, Prince Harry’s memoir was displayed next to a book called ‘How to Kill Your Family’ by an author named Bella Mackie. The bookshop definitely enjoyed their sarcastic dig at the Royal family as they shared the image online.

They further added, “Seriously, we had to buy them in a box of 12 to fulfil a couple of pre-orders, so if you do want a copy, you can order it here”

Reacting to the viral pic and their social media fame, Shop owner Alex Call, 35, said that the staff at the store thought it would be quite light-hearted and make a few people smile.

When people commented that someone is likely to sue them for it, and it is just a question who sues first, the royal family or Ms. Mackie, the shop’s account replied, “We’ve just put our bestselling books in the window… people are making all sorts of wild assumptions and connections,”

SC agrees to give an urgent hearing to petition challenging Nitish govt’s Caste Census in Bihar

The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to give an urgent hearing to the petition challenging the Bihar government’s notification for conducting the Caste Census in the state.

A lawyer mentioned the plea before the Supreme Court seeking an urgent hearing of the petition challenging the Bihar Government’s notification for conducting the Caste Census in the State. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that it will hear the petition on Friday.

Meanwhile, another petition was moved in the Supreme Court recently by a social worker Akhilesh Kumar through Advocates Barun Kumar Sinha and Abhishek, who, in his petition, said, “That the cause of action arose on/from the impugned Notification dated 06.06.2022 issued by Deputy Secretary, Government of Bihar, whereby decision of the Government to conduct caste census has been communicated to the media and public at large.”

The petitioner Akhilesh Kumar through Advocates Barun Kumar Sinha and Abhishek said that the decision of the State of Bihar is illegal, arbitrary, irrational, unconstitutional and without the authority of law.

According to the petitioner’s submission, there are a total of more than 200 castes in Bihar and all those castes are classified as General Category, OBC, EBC, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes.

According to plea, in the state of Bihar, there are 113 castes which are known as OBC and EBC, eight castes are included in the category of Upper Caste, there are about 22 sub-castes which are included in Scheduled Caste category and there are 29 about Sub Castes which are included in the scheduled category.

“The impugned Notification accords differential treatment without intelligible differentia to the illegal decision of State of Bihar is illegal, arbitrary irrational and unconstitutional,” the petitioner Akhilesh Kumar said, who urged the top court to issue a direction for quashing the impugned Notification dated January 6, 2022, and to direct the authority concerned to refrain from conducting the caste census as it is against the basic structure of the Constitution of India.

As Pakistan is hit by a severe food crisis, along with an economic one, a ‘food festival’ in Karachi turned from fest to chaos in no time. On Sunday, January 8, the concluding day of the ‘Karachi Eat’ festival witnessed chaos, mismanagement, and security failure. 

On the last day of the food festival which started on January 6, several attendees shared their harrowing experiences of how they were groped, bullied, and harassed. The event was reportedly attended by around 2,50,000 lakh people. 

Taking to social media, several attendees shared pictures and videos of the chaotic scenes at the food fest. As seen in videos of the incident, several people are seen scaling the walls, breaking the barricades, forcibly entering the venue, and harassing the attendees compelling the attendees to escape the venue by climbing the walls. 

Pakistani media outlet The Pakistan Daily tweeted a video of the incident and wrote, “Reports of harassment and chaos in this year’s #KarachiEat which saw hundreds of stags gatecrashing the venue leading to the cancellation of music performances and other agenda items. Attendees report a complete security failure at the event.”

One Pakistani Twitter user wrote, “Stags broke the gates and forcefully entered #KarachiEat today. People are saying that they literally had to leave through spaces between walls and jump off them to get out of the chaos. Please ban such events in the city if security can’t be managed.”

In another tweet, she added, “Women in the family section were harassed. Tents were dismantled and to deal with it the management switched off all the lights which made the situation worse. Like literally wtf #KarachiEat2023.”

The chaos reached a point where a singer named Kaifi Khalil performing at the event had to end his performance abruptly, after women were being harassed and treated inappropriately. Taking to Twitter, Khalil informed about what happened at the event. 

Food crisis in Pakistan

It is pertinent to note that a food festival was organized in Karachi at a time when several other cities of Pakistan are facing food shortages and flour is being rationed and guarded by armed guards. 

Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, and Balochistan are among the worst sufferers as tens of thousands spend hours daily to get the subsidized bags of flour that are already short in supply in the market.

Incidents of clashes and stampedes have been reported in markets in many areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, and Balochistan. The situation is so dire that flour-loaded mini trucks and vans are escorted by armed guards to avoid clashes. As these vehicles reach the markets, people gather around these vehicles. 

Prices of wheat and flour have surged dramatically in recent months. Flour in Karachi is being sold from Rs 140 per kilogram to Rs 160 per kilogram. In Islamabad and Peshawar, a 10 kg bag of flour is being sold at Rs 1,500 per kilogram while a 20-kilogram bag of flour is being sold at Rs 2,800. Mill owners in Punjab province have increased the price of flour to Rs 160 per kilogram. 

What led to a food crisis in Pakistan?

There are multiple factors contributing to the food shortage in Pakistan. One such is the scarcity of water. The lack of new dams, cemented canal systems, and other necessary infrastructures to store water lead to the non-availability of water for irrigation resulting in reduced crop production.

It is worth noting that Pakistan’s annual inflation rate increased from 23.8% in November to 24.5% in December 2022. Food prices increased by 35.5%, compared to 31.2% the previous month, with onions (415%), tea (63.8%), wheat (57.3%), eggs (54.4), gram whole (53.2%), and rice (46.6%).

Ukraine Russia war is another factor adding to Pakistan’s food crisis, as Pakistan relies on Russia for its additional wheat supplies which is a staple food for the Pakistani population. As Russia is faced with multiple sanctions from the west, Pakistan has to explore other options to meet its demands. A fragile economy, a disinterested government, and the recent flash floods in Pakistan have led to a crisis in Pakistan. Besides, Pakistan with foreign exchange reserves plunged to an 8-year low of $5.6 billion leaving it under a looming threat of bankruptcy.

On January 11, films of Tamil superstars Ajith Kumar and Vijay were released simultaneously in cinemas resulting in chaos among the fans. As per reports, Fans of Ajith Kumar tore the posters of Vijay starrer Varisu and fans of Vijay tore the posters of Ajith Kumar starrer Thunivu outside a movie theatre in Chennai. Fans gathered to watch the films outside cinema halls. Such a clash has happened after eight years.

Some fans also got injured as they indulged in not-so-safe activities out of the “excitement” of the film. As per news agency ANI, a fan identified as Bharat Kumar jumped from a slow-moving lorry and injured himself on Poonamalle Highways near Rohini Theatre in Chennai. He reportedly succumbed to injuries. Kumar was out to see Ajith Kumar’s film’s 1 AM show. A case was registered in the matter by the police.

The clash between the fans started when they gathered outside the theatre to watch the films of their favourite actors. Soon, they went on tearing the posters of the rival film. In the video shared by news agency ANI, a large number of fans can be seen climbing up the billboard to tear the posters of the rival actors and bring up posters of the actors they like.

In another video shared by ANI, the fans from both sides were seen raising slogans for their favourite actor and film. They burst firecrackers outside the theatre where the film was being shown.

About the films

Vijay starrer Varisu has Rashmika Mandanna as the lead. The film is about a happy-go-lucky man whose life changed after the unexpected death of his foster father.

On the other hand, Ajith Kumar starrer Thunivu is about a criminal mastermind played by Ajith. His team forms a plan to commit heists across banks in Chennai.

Satellite images of a number of Chinese cities have captured crowding at crematoriums and funeral homes, amid the Covid surge across the country after Beijing lifted severe pandemic restrictions, reported Washington Post. 

An overwhelmed funeral home in Chengdu, China, stopped offering memorial services, budgeting just two minutes for each family to say goodbye to loved ones before cremation. A funeral parlour on the outskirts of Beijing quickly cleared space for a new parking lot. Scalpers in Shanghai sold places in line at funeral homes for USD 300 a pop to grieving relatives trying to get cremation slots, reported Washington Post. 

The imagery captured by Maxar Technologies showed an uptick in activity at funeral homes across six different cities, from Beijing in the north to Nanjing in the east, to Chengdu and Kunming in the southwest. 

Social media posts, too, revealed long wait times and overwhelmed staff at additional facilities. 

“I have worked here for six years and it has never been this busy,” said a receptionist at the Jiangnan Funeral Home in Chongqing in southwest China, describing long lines of cars waiting to get into the facility during the days just before and after Christmas. 

“The freezers were full and all eight incinerators were operating 24/7. The phone has basically not stopped ringing,” she said. 

Such is the demand that at least four funeral homes contacted by the Washington Post have stopped allowing memorial services and are now offering only cremation services and storage, an indication that the majority of people waiting at these facilities were there to process recently deceased loved ones. 

China recently moved away from its strict ‘Zero Covid’ approach, which had sparked mass unrest after more than two years of tight controls on citizens’ personal lives.

On Monday, January 9, Peethadhishwar Sanyam Teerth Maharaj of Kashi Haridwar Peeth visited the Shri Ram temple for darshan and also met Champat Rai, General Secretary of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. The Kashi Haridwar Peethadheeshwar offered 47 grams of gold to build a murti (idol) of Ram Lalla (Lord Ram in his childhood form) and 167 kg of silver for the construction of Singhdwar.

Reportedly, from the temple’s sanctum sanctorum to the Shikhar or peak, there will be gold decoration. Preparations are also underway to make a garland of 108 gold coins for the Ram Lalla idol that will be installed in the temple. 

It is worth noting that devotees of Shri Ram from all over the country have so far donated over 500 kg of silver to the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra. According to reports, a businessman from Maharashtra has asked for permission to gold-plate Ramlala’s throne (Singhasan).

The Patna Mahavir Mandir Trust of Bihar was said to have donated Rs 10 crore for the construction of the Ram temple after it began. Following that, a yearly payment of Rs 2 crore is made to the Ram Janmabhoomi pilgrimage area. The Mahavir Mandir Trust has already contributed Rs 6 crore. Notably, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has on January 5 announced that Shri Ram Temple will be ready by 1st January 2024. While speaking at a rally in Sabroom in South Tripura, Amit Shah said “During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, I was the president of the BJP and Rahul Baba (Rahul Gandhi) was the president of the Congress. He used to ask every day – the date of construction of the temple there will never be told. So Rahul baba, open your ears and listen, on January 1, 2024, you will have the grand Ram temple in Ayodhya ready.”
