Contested election against Omar Abdullah, campaigned for AAP: Read how terrorist Nazir Ahmed escaped agencies for 30 years

In 1993, there was a grenade attack on the police in Deoband, Uttar Pradesh and a few months later, a Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist was arrested in this case and he received bail next year. This is the story of Nazir Ahmed alias Mustafa Bani alias Javed Iqbal.

Afterwards, Nazir was caught from Srinagar on 17th November 2024, and he was found to have been deceiving everyone for around 30 years by changing his name, attire and location. He also contested for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections while he was absconding, and even became a top campaigner for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He nearly became the party’s candidate in the recently concluded poll in the union territory, according to a report.

OpIndia’s investigation has revealed that Nazir Ahmed Wani has been constantly altering his identity. His name in the case registered in Deoband is Nazir Ahmed but he stayed in Saharanpur as Mushtaq Ahmed. He spent his jail time under the name of Farari Mustafa and returned to Kashmir just after he obtained bail. He then changed his name to Javed Iqbal Wani. He also changed his address which used to be Inzak Sharifabad in Budgam district which falls under the jurisdiction of Parimpura police station.

He started to live in Haker Mulla village near Soibugh town of Budgam district after he went back to the valley. Around fifty active terrorists have reportedly fled the police station area where Nazir Ahmed Wani resided at different times, per police sources.

Nazir Ahmed was 20 years old and unmarried at the time of the grenade attack on Uttar Pradesh Police. He married Sabrina Nazir as soon as he was released on bail and traveled to Kashmir and has three children, Sugra, Sadat and Makit. He purchased a Wagon R car in 2019. He and his wife were described as businessmen in official documents. Nazir Ahmed Wani also contested the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir assembly election. He had filed a nomination as an independent candidate against Chief Minister Omar Abdullah from Budgam’s seat. According to the information available on the Election Commission website, he secured only 1583 votes while NOTA got 1757 votes. He had previously participated in the local elections as well and lost them too.

A report in Dainik Bhaskar stated that Nazir Ahmed had asked for a ticket from AAP for the assembly poll but the party learned that he was a terrorist at the last moment and didn’t grant him the ticket. We tried to contact the leaders of AAP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit but couldn’t obtain their side of the story.

The same report mentioned that Nazir was trained in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) and Afghanistan between 1989 and 1991 after which he arrived at Deoband in 1991, and started living there while concealing his identity.

The grenade attack in Deoband is not included in Nazir Ahmed’s affidavit submitted for the assembly election. Only one case has been mentioned which was registered against him in January 2023 in Budgam district. Action was taken in the case under sections 341 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Notably, Nazir Ahmed Wani was charged in 1993 under Section 307 of the IPC and Explosives Act for throwing grenades at civilians and policemen. Another First Information Report was filed against him for using forged documents in 1994, following his arrest, under sections 467, 468, and 471 of the IPC.

It has been over 30 years since Nazir Ahmed was involved in these two incidents. Dainik Jagran quoted Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Budgam Nikhil Borkar and claimed that there is no terrorist case registered against Nazir Ahmed in any part of Kashmir. However, a criminal case was lodged against him.

Nazir Ahmed was active on Facebook under the name of Wani Javed Iqbal. His association with AAP was confirmed after searching for his profile.

His name appears on the list of the top 40 celebrity campaigners for the latest assembly election, according to an official letter from the party’s Delhi headquarters. This letter was issued by AAP’s nodal person Bipul Day on 24th August.

Javed Iqbal’s name is featured at number 38. Copies of the letter were forwarded to New Delhi and Jammu Kashmir Election Commission. He also thanked the party for the same through his Facebook profile. We made several attempts to contact the Jammu and Kashmir unit of AAP to ascertain the truth about the letter and Javed Iqbal.

A Saharanpur court issued a permanent warrant against Nazir Ahmed on 20th May 2024 after which the police announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for his arrest. On 17th November, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested him from Srinagar. A report quoted Saharanpur Superintendent of Police (Rural) Sagar Jain and disclosed that Nazir Ahmed had been evading capture for so long by assuming different identities.

Big pre-poll allegation hits Maha Vikas Aghadi: Supriya Sule, Nana Patole used Bitcoin scam cash to fund polls, claims former IPS Ravindranath Patil

A day before the state of Maharashtra goes to the polls, Ravindranath Patil, former-IPS officer from Pune made a major allegation against NCP-SP Leader and Baramati MP Supriya Sule and Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole.

The former IPS officer alleged that the two leaders had misappropriated bitcoins from a 2018 Cryptocurrency Fraud Case and had used by the same to fund the ongoing Maharashtra Assembly Elections. Patil says he is ready to support the investigation.

Speaking to ANI, former IPS officer alleged that Amitabh Gupta, then Commissioner of Police, Pune, and Bhagyashri Nautake, then Deputy Commissioner of Police handling the Cyber Crime Investigations were involved in the misappropriation of bitcoins, which are eventually being used by the two political leaders.

“My company called me as a cryptocurrency expert to investigate a case in 2018. I was arrested in that case in 2022 under allegations of fraud. I spent 14 months in jail after a trial. During that time, I was wondering what had happened, what the case was and why was I trapped. There were other colleagues also with me. We were working on finding out the truth. A witness against us, Gaurav Mehta, who is an employee of an audit firm named Sarathi Associates. A day before yesterday, he called me multiple times for 4-5 hours, but I did not respond… Finally, when I responded, he told me that in 2018, when Amit Bharadwaj was arrested, he had a cryptocurrency hardware wallet… That wallet was replaced by the then Commissioner Amitabh Gupta and another wallet was kept. We were arrested but the real perpetrators were Amitabh Gupta and his team. He (Gaurav Mehta) took the names of two IPS officers, Amitabh Gupta and Bhagyashri Nautake. He took two people’s name one is Supriya Sule and Nana Patole. He then told me that in this assembly elections bitcoins are being used,” Patil alleged.

Patil claims he has access to voice notes allegedly sent by the alleged witness Gaurav Mehta, “Supriya Sule has sent three voice note messages in which she is heard asking Gaurav to encash bitcoins as the funds are needed for the elections. She is also heard assuring him not to worry about the inquiries and one they come to power, they will handle them.”

“He (Gaurav Mehta) further said that in the Maharashtra Assembly elections too, the same bitcoin money is being used. On the direction of Amitabh Gupta, he (Gaurav Mehta) went to Dubai multiple times and converted the bitcoin into cash. And that cash is being used in Maharashtra elections… He (Gaurav Mehta) sent me some voice notes he had received on WhatsApp. There were 3 audio messages from Supriya Sule where she asks for cash in exchange for bitcoins. She also says that he (Gaurav Mehta) does not need to worry about inquiry, they will handle it when they come to power… He (Gaurav Mehta) sent another voice note between Amitabh Gupta and Nana Patole where Patole is asking why there is a delay in cash,” Patil further added.

Patil further alleged that “in other calls, Amitabh Gupta is heard giving instructions to Gaurav to cash out bitcoins.

“He (Gaurav) sent me more recordings where Amitabh Gupta was asking for Rs. 50 crores… He sent me a voice note he sent to Amitabh Gupta, saying that they had made 4 crypto wallets under the names of Patil and Ghode (my colleague) and the transactions were done from these wallets. If there is an investigation, Patil and Ghode would be caught… During the chat with me, he (Gaurav Mehta) alleged that he wanted to come out of this but his life would be in danger… I have all the screenshots and the audio and I am ready to provide them to the investigation agencies. I am ready to support the investigation,” Patil said.

Ravindranath Patil further said that he got this information from the whistle-blower, who was also part of the cyber experts’ team that was investigating the 2018 Cryptocurrency Fraud Case.

He further alleged that the Cyber Expert, Gaurav Mehta is currently having the custody of misappropriated bitcoins, amounting to hundreds of crores of rupees.

“He said that they have already sold bitcoins worth Rs. 150 crores and they have several 100 crores more… The cash was used in Lok Sabha elections and is not being used in assembly elections also,” Patil claimed.

Neither of the named parties have so far reacted to Ravindra Patil’s allegations.

Ravindranath Patil is a former IPS officer of 2004 batch and since 2010, he was working as a Cyber Expert in corporate sector. During the investigation of 2018 Bitcoin Fraud Case, he was appointed to conduct a forensic audit.

Four years later, he was named as an accused for the alleged misappropriation of bitcoins amounting to 5 Crores, and he spent nearly 14 months in Yerawada Central Prison as an undertrial. Currently, he is a practicing advocate in the Bombay High Court.

The allegations against Nana Patole and Supriya Sule follow an incident of high drams on Tuesday after the workers of Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) created a ruckus outside a hotel located at Nalasopara assembly constituency in Palghar district accusing the BJP of “distributing money.”

The BVA workers created a ruckus outside the Vivanta Hotel in Virar where BJP leader Vinod Tawde was holding a meeting with the party workers.

Notably, Vinod Tawde dismissed the charge levelled by BVA that the BJP was “distributing money” ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections.

“A meeting of MLAs of Nalasopara was underway. I went there to tell them about the Model Code of Conduct for the day of voting, how will voting machines be sealed and how to go about if an objection has to be made. The workers of the party (Bahujan Vikas Aghadi), Appa Thakur and Kshitij thought that we were distributing money. Let the Election Commission and Police inquire, let them get CCTV footage. I have been in the party for 40 years. Appa Thakur and Kshitij know me, and the entire party knows me. Still, I believe that the Election Commission should conduct an impartial investigation,” Tawde said.

The Maharashtra assembly elections are scheduled for November 20. The counting of votes will take place on November 23.

Putin signs a new nuclear weapons doctrine as a warning after US govt approves longer-range missiles for Ukraine

0

On Tuesday, 19th November, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a revised nuclear doctrine, only days after the US authorized Ukraine’s use of longer-range missiles against Moscow. The development came as Kyiv launched its first strike on a Russian border territory with Western-supplied missiles. The latest revelations heighten the looming prospect of a nuclear escalation as the war enters its 1000th day.

According to the recently approved regulation, aggression against Russia or its allies by a non-nuclear state backed by a nuclear power will be considered a joint attack. Simply put, an assault by Ukraine on Russia or its ally Belarus would be regarded as a combined US-Ukraine attack, perhaps leading to a nuclear reaction.

The broad phrasing appears to dramatically expand the triggers for a potential nuclear conflict. An earlier version of the document indicated that Russia may use its nuclear weapons if reliable information about the launch of ballistic missiles targeting the territory of Russia or its allies was acquired.

“Aggression against the Russian Federation and (or) its allies on the part of any non-nuclear state with the participation or support of a nuclear state is considered as their joint attack. The aggression of any state from a military coalition (bloc, union) against the Russian Federation and (or) its allies is considered as aggression by the coalition (bloc, union) as a whole,” the doctrine said.

Meanwhile, RBC Ukraine announced on Tuesday that the country has launched its first strike on a Russian border territory, using Western-supplied missiles. Ukrainian soldiers reportedly launched their attack as President Vladimir Putin approved a new nuclear doctrine that broadened the parameters for launching nuclear weapons. It was the first known attack following the decision made by the Joe Biden administration.

Ukraine has been firing homemade drones far into Russia for months, but US weapons are more lethal. Ukrainian officials have stated that they require the capacity to target Russian air bases and planes used for glide-bomb and missile attacks.

The ballistic missiles, produced by the US aerospace and defense company Lockheed Martin, have a striking distance roughly double that of most of Ukraine’s armaments, reaching up to 300 kilometers. The United States has given Ukraine dozens of ATACMS missiles, which have already been deployed to destroy military sites in Russian-occupied Ukraine, including Crimea.

Polio still prevalent in India’s neighbourhood despite getting eradicated in rest of the world: Pakistan reports 50th polio case in 2024

0

Pakistan’s National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) reported another polio case, bringing the total number of cases this year to 50, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

According to NEOC, the National Reference Lab identified the latest case involving a 20-month-old girl from Tank district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, ARY News reported.

Tests confirmed the presence of Wild Poliovirus Type 1 (WPV1). This is the second polio case reported from Tank this year, with a genetic link established to a case from July in the same district, as per ARY News.

Balochistan province remains the hardest hit, with 24 cases being reported this year, followed by Sindh with 13, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 11, and Punjab and Islamabad each recording one case.

Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of polio vaccination campaigns to curb the spread of the virus, particularly in high-risk areas, as per ARY News.

The spike in polio cases in the country has sparked global concerns, where international organisations called Pakistan to implement emergency measures to stop the spread of virus.

Pakistan reported the 49th case on November 15, Geo News reported, quoting The News.

The case, detected in Jaffarabad, Balochistan, marked the district’s first confirmed polio infection, underscoring the virus’s ongoing spread across the country, health authorities announced on November 14, as per Geo News.

Genetic sequencing of the virus sample, conducted by the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad, has traced the virus to a WPV1 strain previously identified in Pishin, Balochistan, in April, Geo News reported.

This connection highlights active transmission within the province, which remains the hardest-hit area, with 24 cases reported to date.

Pakistan remains one of only two countries where wild poliovirus transmission has not yet been eradicated. The ongoing spread is attributed to challenges such as insecurity, misinformation, and community resistance, which complicate vaccination campaigns.

The illness invades the nervous system and causes paralysis or even death. While there is no cure for polio, officials stress that immunisation is the most effective defence against this virus.

Anmol Bishnoi, dreaded gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s brother, fled India using fake documents; caught in the US while using name ‘Bhanu’

0

On 14th November, the Federal Bureau of Investigation detained the younger brother of notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, Anmol Bishnoi, in California, United States. Anmol reportedly fled India using fake documents. He is wanted in India for multiple crimes, and his name has also come up in the murder of NCP politician Baba Siddique.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had previously announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for his capture. While the US State Department has refrained from commenting on the matter, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is working to expedite his extradition to India.

Anmol Bishnoi’s fake passport under the name ‘Bhanu’

According to media reports, Anmol fled to the United States on 15th May 2022. He used forged documents and a passport issued under the alias “Bhanu.” A discrepancy in his paperwork was flagged by US authorities, leading to his detention in California. On 15th November, the CBI held a 45-minute meeting with FBI officials and presented evidence against Anmol, hoping to strengthen the case for his extradition.

CBI links Anmol Bishnoi to high-profile crimes in India

During the meeting, the CBI reportedly shared records of multiple cases against Anmol, including his role in the murder of Baba Siddique and a firing incident outside Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s residence in Mumbai. These cases are part of a broader investigation into the organised criminal operations of the Bishnoi gang.

The US State Department, including spokesperson Matthew Miller, has, however, remained tight-lipped on the matter and declined to comment on the progress of his extradition.

During a press briefing, Miller was asked about Anmol. A reporter asked, “An Indian citizen, Anmol Bishnoi, was detained in California by the US immigration department last week. Media reports suggest that FBI officials and Indian security officials have discussed the possibility of deporting him. I’m wondering if you have anything to add to this report or verify this report.” In reply, Miller said, “No, the only thing I would add to it is that it would be appropriate – if anyone is going to comment on such a report, it would be the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, not the State Department.”

NIA’s Rs 10 lakh bounty and Bishnoi’s long criminal record

The NIA had declared a Rs 10 lakh reward for Anmol Bishnoi’s arrest in October 2024. He is wanted in two NIA-registered cases from 2022, for which chargesheets have already been filed. Rajasthan Police recently revealed that Anmol faces a total of 31 criminal cases, 22 of them registered in Rajasthan alone.

Anmol Bishnoi has been on the radar for years, with a Red Corner Notice issued against him on 6th December 2022. He was last seen in 2023 at a wedding in California. According to Delhi Police, despite being overseas, Anmol has been managing the Bishnoi gang’s criminal operations, including extortion and murders.

Germany: Reminder of Nazi era of Jews persecution in the country as Berlin Police issues warning; advises Jews to stay away from Arab areas

0

On Tuesday, 19th November, Berlin’s police chief in Germany warned the Jews and LGBTQ+ people, and said that they should not disclose their identities in the Arab neighborhoods where people have sympathies for the terrorist groups.

“There are areas of the city, we need to be perfectly honest here, where I would advise people who wear a kippah or are openly gay to be more careful,” said Barbara Slowik, Berlin’s police chief.

“There are certain neighborhoods where the majority of people of Arab origin live, who also have sympathies for terrorist groups,” she said adding that, “violent crimes against Jewish people are few and far between, but every act is one too many.”

Meanwhile, Slowik said that her objective was not to devalue any community. “I do not want to ‘defame’ any particular group of people as perpetrators,” she said.

Earlier last month, an armed pro-Palestinian crowd ‘hunted down’ a Jewish junior football team in Germany, forcing them to seek police protection. Players from Makkabi Berlin’s young squad said they were followed by a crowd with sticks and knives after a game against local rivals last week.

The team, which consisted of players between 13 and 16-year-olds, said that they were being pursued by Arab youngsters. In an interview with the Berliner Zeitung, Slowik confirmed these changes, stating that while the city does not have ‘no-go zones,’ specific areas may be uncomfortable for visibly Jewish people or members of the LGBTQ community.

“There are, unfortunately, neighbourhoods in Berlin with a majority of residents from Arab backgrounds where there is open sympathy for terrorist organizations and very blatant antisemitism,” she reiterated.

As per the local reports, since Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7th, Berlin police have investigated 6,200 antisemitic crimes, including beatings, online hate speech, and attacks on police during pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Antisemitic events increased by 50% compared to 2022, with two-thirds of them happening after October 7th Hamas attack.

The Sabarmati Report: 7 reasons why you should watch the movie, 7 reasons to ignore it, and the 3 controversial scenes

On April 28, 2006, a film was released that stands out for its significance. While movies are released every week, this date is notable because it marked the debut of the Hollywood film United 93, 1,721 days after the real-life event that inspired it. Remarkably, the incident was adapted for the screen in under five years. Although other films have been made on the same subject, United 93 holds a unique position due to its deeply intertwined narrative with the actual event. This authenticity brought the story to life, earning the film exceptional ratings on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb.

It was such a major development that even Bollywood started making movies on the same. It was based on the terrorist attack which transpired on 11th September 2001 and targeted the World Trade Centre in the United States of America. The filmmakers, however, saw a masala venture like “My Name Is Khan” in the incident. Were the filmmakers aware of a more serious incident in our nation? Was it possible for the storytellers within them to show the event on the silver screen and reveal the truth to the public? Has our country actually experienced a tragedy worse than 9/11? The answer is “yes” and the reasoning behind it terrifies the film industry.

On 27th February 2002, 59 people were burnt alive to death and this incident was much more horrifying than 9/11. It is not because of the number of fatalities but the identity of the perpetrators. The people who carried out 9/11 were trained and had a religious mindset but those who burnt the Sabarmati Express train could be anyone from a vegetable seller to a tailor or a painter to a Maulvi-Maulana (Muslim cleric) or even a neighbor walking in the crowd, all of whom we trust.

How can a person burn someone alive to death? How is it possible to burn 59 people alive at once? The answer to such inquiries is that hatred must first reach the soul rather than the mind or heart before one can even consider committing such an act. According to the text, Islamist beliefs already include hateful notions including the killing of “kafir” (infidel), hellfire and others. However, how is this animosity possible in a Ganga-Jamuni culture? The result is that “The Sabarmati Report” has been released after 8297 days. That’s more than 22 years of wait.

I apologise for not being able to write about the movie or its screenplay, music, acting, cinematography or any other thing even after so many paragraphs but I have not strayed. I didn’t want to write the review. There was no requirement for it. A lot has already been expressed from mainstream to social media. Hence, I am writing about the need for this film in our society. I’m curious as to why it took 22 years for someone to produce a movie about such a dreadful and heartbreaking event that will always be remembered in Indian history.

Why one should watch “The Sabarmati Report”

  • It was Sabarmati Express transporting the karsevaks from Ayodhya that was burned in Godhra.
  • Watch this movie to learn the names of some of the 59 passengers who perished in the Sabarmati Express fire in Godhra.
  • Watch this movie to learn about the event that split Indian history into two sections: India before and after Godhra.
  • The train fire was intentionally kindled by extremist Muslims rather than a spontaneous occurence of a technical issue. Watch this movie if you want to witness this reality on the big screen.
  • If you believe that the media portrays all facts accurately, then you should watch this movie.
  • The community of Ganga-Jamuni filmmakers eventually woke up even if it was after 22 years and wrote as well as filmed the truth of Godhra. Watch this movie if you wish to witness this transformation.
  • Only 41 of the 59 individuals who were burned alive as a result of radical Islamic ideology have had their names released to the public thus far. Who were the other eighteen unidentified people? When will the investigative journalists and filmmakers from Bollywood execute research on this and produce a documentary or movie? Do you want those 18 people to not be forgotten by just going unnoticed, or do you want the issue to become more than just a question and instead become the story of the nation? If you want this then watch this movie.

Why one shouldn’t watch “The Sabarmati Report”

  • You should avoid watching this movie if you want to see the visuals of the burning train because the focus of the movie is not on the train burning but on how an attempt was made to erase this inhuman incident from history. The movie centers on this media industry that propagates deceptive information.
  • Don’t watch this movie if you want to witness the screams of those who were burned alive because the filmmakers must not have intended to further torment the families of the victims. Hence they and the fire are only a part of this project. However, a fanatic Muslim crowd was shown to plan and then set fire to two of the train’s bogies. The film then revolves around how the media nearly destroyed this information.
  • Don’t watch this movie if you can’t tell the difference between the “two stories” that are presented in it, the lie that lies beneath the story and the reality that emerged after. This is a significant part that many moviegoers in the theater were seen to have misunderstood and even commented on. The filmmakers clearly presented two stories “Kahani-1” and “Kahani-2” and clarified that these stories were purposefully crafted to prevent the revelation of Godhra’s reality. The storyline of the Hindu boy testifying against the karsevaks in Kahani-2 and the Muslim girl being abducted by them in Kahani-1 is so compelling that, based on these two tales, the narrative that “the train caught fire on its own” was not only produced by the media of the day but it was also thought to be true in the initial probe reports. The director has demonstrated that the story itself need not be true by disclosing the fabrications of these two tales in the movie.
  • Don’t watch this movie if you can’t comprehend the media report’s content or how the truth was revealed at the end. The fallacy of blindly relying on the media, the fourth pillar of the nation, has been dispelled by the story’s writer and director. For this reason, if one pays close attention to the script, it will be discovered that any sequence like “the train caught fire due to an accident” at the start of the movie is actually a media story. Nowhere is it stated that this is the actual reality. The filmmakers deserve a perfect score for shattering the idea that media equals truth.
  • Don’t watch this movie if you can’t tell the difference between the cheers in the Muslim colony when the Pakistan cricket team hits a six and the scene where a small child with the skullcap celebrates India’s victory while bursting firecrackers. Some things are stated directly and some indirectly in the visual media. We must recognize this distinction as viewers. The writer is telling the hero straight out that when the Pakistan cricket team performs well, it’s usual in Muslim colonies for people to burst crackers. In contrast, the filmmaker depicts a parallel reality in which the naive youngsters of the same colony, who have not been exposed to Pakistan or extreme religious ideas, celebrate India’s success as if it were their own. We have to acknowledge the difference between portraying the mindset of a Muslim child and that of a fanatical Muslim adult or adolescent on TV.
  • Don’t watch this movie if you can’t see the reasoning for the claim that both sides have good people. Although there is nothing wrong with this sequence, many viewers claim that the creators included it for balance, which is untrue. It can be considered this way, if some people from the other side are not honest, then who are the ones returning to the fold of Sanatan Dharma?
  • The plot revolves around a Hindi journalist, however, if you prefer pure Hindi in written form then avoid this movie. Indeed, the Hindi spoken in the film is accurate because it is a Hindi film, but the section where it is written in Hindi is disappointing.

What does the director wants to convey in the controversial scenes

“There are honest people on both sides.” If you are hurt by this scene, then what are your views about APJ Abdul Kalam? Will you dismiss him? Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan is in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) right now. He had protested against his own Congress party and former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi on the Shah Bano matter. So, will you reject him too? The story’s writer and director are merely trying to communicate that if there is a nice person in any section of society, they should be perceived as such. Should the makers not have the freedom to say and show even this much?

“Small children wearing Muslim caps celebrating India’s victory.” It is important to note that the children shown in this scene have not reached adolescence. The director wants to show that the poison of religious fanaticism has not yet filled their minds and they are innocent. Hence, they are rejoicing in the country’s win. The same filmmaker also depicted family members of those youngsters from the same Muslim colony popping crackers and clapping when Pakistan hit a six. Do you want to stop using the visual medium to compel the audience to reflect by presenting them with completely different scenarios in parallel?

“Media report and two false stories.” The director is attempting to indicate that the media has only spread incorrect information following the Sabarmati Express fire. People believe the images displayed by the media they trust to be true and that has been exposed. This movie focuses more on who planned the conspiracy and who concealed it than on who set fire to the Sabarmati Express. What is wrong with this plot point when the media is the antagonist?

Where improvement could have been made

The terrible Hindi that was written was ignored from the first disclaimer until the last sequence of gratitude. It is inexcusable given that the protagonist is proud to be a Hindi journalist and refers to himself as such throughout the movie. The producer-director should have made him do the proofreading without spending any money if he really truly knew Hindi in real life.

Pakistan: Top cleric claims VPN use is un-Islamic, PM Shehbaz Sharif uses VPNs to post on X because his country has banned the platform

On 18th November, top body of clerics of Pakistan declared that the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPN) is un-Islamic. In recent times, Pakistan has imposed strict internet controls, including a ban on the social media platform X. However, several internet users have resorted to VPNs to evade the ban. The Ministry of Interior of Pakistan has sought a ban on VPN services in the country to prevent such evasions of the law. On the same day, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) chairman told a Senate panel that non-registered VPNs will stop working following a 30th November deadline.

The chairman of the Council of Islamic Ideology, Raghib Naeemi, said that Sharia allowed the government to prevent actions that lead to the “spread of evil”. The Council of Islamic Ideology advises the government of Pakistan on religious matters. Naeemi added that any platform being used for posting controversial, blasphemous, or anti-national content “should be stopped immediately”.

Authorities in Pakistan have sought a ban on the use of VPNs, allegedly to curb militancy. The declaration of VPN being un-Islamic by Naeemi came soon after the Ministry of Interior of Pakistan wrote to the Ministry of Information and Technology, seeking a ban on VPNs on the grounds that they are being used by insurgents to propagate their agenda. However, this move is being seen as an attempt to curb the freedom of expression of Pakistan’s citizens.

The ministry said, “VPNs are increasingly being exploited by terrorists to facilitate violent activities.” Furthermore, VPNs are also being used to access pornographic content in Pakistan, which is a concern for the government. The government also wants to restrict access to “blasphemous” content on social media. A few days ago, the authorities had also asked internet users to register VPNs with Pakistan’s media regulator, which would allow the government to increase surveillance.

X was banned in Pakistan ahead of the 2023 elections

Notably, the Government of Pakistan banned X in February 2023 ahead of parliamentary elections. Several users, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, have been seen using VPNs to access X. VPNs are services that re-route connections to websites via servers located in different countries. They can be used to bypass blockades imposed by governments and to hide online activity from being traced.

The supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan are among the top users of VPNs. They have called for a march on the coming 24th November to pressure the government to release Khan. Following the reports of possible ban on VPN, Imran Khan made an appeal to his followers urging them to join the protests on 24th November. He said, “Today, I am calling on the entire nation to take to the streets on November 24. This is not just PTI’s issue, [rather] this is the issue of every Pakistani.” He added, “X [formerly Twitter] was blocked, and now even VPN access is being restricted. People are being denied the right to access information, and Pakistan has lost billions due to these internet shutdowns. It’s a direct assault on the rights of people.” Khan accused the government of disregarding the laws and said, “Instead of negotiations, we see arrests of our workers. The PML-N’s refusal to hold elections [to the Punjab Assembly] until [then-CJP Umar Ata] Bandial leaves is a violation of the Constitution.”

Kerala High Court objects to 2010 ‘Muslim survey’ by foreign company in India: Know about the case and the ruling requiring Centre’s approval

The Kerala High Court has recently expressed concerns [pdf] over a ‘Muslim survey’ conducted by a foreign company in India and refused to quash charges against its employees.

The survey was carried out in Kerala’s capital city Thiruvananthapuram in 2010 by 4 employees of Hyderabad-based Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS) India Limited.

TNS India is the Indian arm of the UK-based TNS Global Group Holdings Limited. A contract was signed by the President of Princeton Survey Research Associates, based in Washington, with TNS India for a project titled ‘Green Wave 12’.

The Background of the Controversy

The company had reportedly conducted the ‘Muslim survey’ in 54 locations in India and countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand with the objective of ‘helping clients understand a country’s traditions, values, and attitudes.’

As part of its ‘sensitive study’, TNS India prepared a booklet comprising questions to interview about 6000 people.

When 4 employees of the company went to Friends Nagar in Thiruvananthapuram on 2nd October 2010, it led to a law and order situation.

The Fort Police rushed to the spot and seized the booklets from the contractual employees after determining that the questionnaires in the booklets ‘may hurt the religious sentiments and holy faith of Muslim community.’

A case was eventually registered under IPC Section 153B(1)(c) read with Section 34, which punishes those who publish statements that promote disharmony or hatred between different religious groups

During the investigation, it was found that the survey was conducted with the intention to ‘spoil the existing communal harmony and to create emotional conflict among the Muslim community’.

Questions asked in the survey

Some of the controversial questions that was asked in the ‘Muslim survey’ to the respondents included the following.

  1. What do you think is the most important contribution Islam offers to the world today?
  2. How well do you think you understand the difference between Shia Islam and Sunni Islam?
  3. What poses the greatest threat to Islam today?

  8. Do you wear the hijab or burqa when you go outside of your home?
  9. On the whole, are things in India generally going in the right direction, or are they going in the wrong direction?
  10. Please tell me which one of these you would think of first if someone were to ask you “who are you?” (choices include caste, region, nationality, and religion)
  11. India has different kinds of political parties that compete for seats in Parliament. For each of the following types of political parties, please tell me how appropriate it would be for Muslims to support or vote for it.
  12. Some people say that Western economic and business practices are incompatible with Islam – while others say that they are compatible with Islam. Which comes closer to your opinion?
  13. How much of a role do you think Islam plays in the political life of India?
  14. And how much of a role do you think Islam should play in the political life of India?
  15. In your opinion, is Islam playing a greater or lesser role among Muslims in India compared to a few years ago?
  16. Which ONE of the following is the most important reason Islam is playing a greater role among Muslims in India these days? Is it because of dissatisfaction with the current government’s policies or because of the level of immorality in our society OR because of influences from other Muslim countries?
  17. Which of the following countries offers the next best model for governing a Muslim country these days?
  18. Turning to another subject, in your opinion, are there any serious threats to Islam today?
  19. Which of the following statements comes closest to your idea of the role religious leaders should play in politics?
  20. To what extent to do you think Sharia should be used as the basis for the official laws of India?
  21. Would you feel very comfortable, somewhat comfortable, somewhat uncomfortable, or very uncomfortable voting for a person of a different faith for an important government position?

The Kerala High Court verdict on ‘Muslim survey’

The matter was heard by a single-judge Bench of Justice PV KunhiKrishnan. “It is surprising to see that a foreign company is conducting a survey in our country with a bunch of suspicious questions. I am of the considered opinion that the survey itself is suspicious,” he noted.

The court stated that prior permission from the Central government is a must for foreign companies before conducting surveys and research in India.

“If these types of surveys are allowed to continue, the same will affect the security of our country and importantly religious harmony. The Central Government should take it very seriously, and if there is any intention to topple the integrity of our country by conducting such surveys, appropriate steps should be taken in accordance with the law,” Justice PV KunhiKrishnan ruled.

He added that an investigation only by the police was not enough in the particular case of TNS India Pvt. Ltd. Vs State of Kerala and sought intervention from the Centre.

The Kerala High Court ruled, “The Investigating Officer in Cr.334/CR/ISIT/2012 (Crime No.1041/2010 of Fort Police Station, Thiruvananthapuram) shall forward a report about the investigation so far conducted in this case to the Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, and the Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, within one month from the date of receipt of a copy of this order.”

“The Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs will do the needful in accordance with law and order further enquiry/investigation, if necessary, in accordance with law,” it concluded.

Congress govt in Telangana to spend Rs 3.5 crores on constructing Vaastu-compliant gates for the Secretariat: Report

In Telangana, the Bahubali main gate (main entrance) at the Secretariat has been removed to the surprise of the locals. On Sunday (17th November), the main entrance passage to the Secretariat was closed off with blue tin sheets due to Chief Minister Revenath Reddy’s concerns about the Vaastu. As per a News18 report, the Telangana Congress government is splurging a whopping Rs 3.5 crore on building a new gate for the Telangana secretariat which will be built as per Vaastu stipulations.

As per the official documents, the estimated cost of constructing the Vaastu-compliant gates at the state Secretariat in Telangana will be Rs.3.50 Crore. The stages of the construction work include laying of new internal road 48 wide from North East gate no 4 to South East gate no 2 on the east side including the construction of side drains and a Footpath, providing an additional Gate on the east side compound wall, providing External Electrification along the new road and providing External Electrification along new road. Meanwhile, as the present stage of work mentioned in the document, road excavation work is in progress.

This comes at a time when the Congress government in Telangana is yet to implement many of its schemes guaranteed by the party during state elections. It should be noted that in September of last year, the Congress party promised the people of Telangana six promises if elected to power in the state within 100 days. The party promised that all Telangana activists would receive a 250-yard house site, a housing program worth 5 lakh rupees, a monthly old-age pension of 4,000 rupees, and up to 10 lakh rupees in health insurance. While Congress has yet to deliver on its much-hyped six promises, and Telangana’s financial situation is not believed to be very good, CM Reddy is spending public money to build Vaastu-compliant gates.

Criticising the Telangana government for allegedly squandering taxpayers’ money on misplaced priorities, BJP leader NV Subhash said that while the state’s economy is in shambles, the exchequer is dried up and hardly any money is left to pay the salaries of government employees, CM Revanth Reddy along with his cabinet ministers is spending huge amounts of money on the interiors of their offices and houses. “This shows that they [Telangana Congress] are not committed and they just wanted the luxury and are leaving the people in doldrums…” the BJP leader told News18.

Meanwhile, the Congress spokesperson Shujath Ali attributed the secretariat entrance revamp and separate entrance passage construction for CM Reddy to increased public footfall rather than the Vaastu stipulations.

Former CM KCR’s fixation with the ‘Vaastu’ of Telangana Secretariat

While the Telangana Congress and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy are receiving flak over their alleged obsession with the Vaastu of the secretariat, former CM KCR also had a similar fixation. As OpIndia reported earlier, in a press conference in the year 2015, KCR announced that the existing secretariat building has very “bad vaastu”, and that’s why no CM ever had a good time there.

He was referring to the history of incomplete CM terms in the state. He was alluding to this history while commenting that the existing secretariat building is basically not safe for him to work in (though he actually claimed that this was not good for Telangana)!

In 2015, the BRS Chief claimed that the construction cost for the new secretariat will be about Rs 150 crore and he will demolish the Chest Hospital building in the city. There was widespread outrage by people at this decision to demolish the heritage chest hospital building. This outrage forced KCR to back off from the proposed new building here.

After some time, KCR put the onus on the central government to give the Bison Polo grounds – grounds that belong to the Ministry of Defence. The Prime Minister had given in-principle approval for the same in the year 2017. However, there was again outrage from the citizens; and also, the nitty-gritty between the state and the central government on the actual terms of transfer of this land was taking too long (even though the High Court approved the construction on Bison Polo Grounds).

At this point in time (2018), KCR claimed that the construction cost for the new Secretariat will be 250 crores. This, blatant wastage of public money was widely criticised by the people of Telangana, and their resentment over the same reflected in the state elections as they ousted BRS from power. However, now its successor Congress is also allegedly heading the same way.
