Watch: people go berserk looting Mayawati’s multi-layered birthday cake

As the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati celebrated her 63rd birthday, a magnificent multi-layered cake was brought in for the people who had gathered in Amroha to celebrate the same. However, in a hilarious turn of events, the crowd present there soon started creating a ruckus over the cake. A video of the celebration surfaced, in which people can be seen ‘looting’ the cake.

With huge chunks of cake in their hands, people can be seen heading towards the cake which has been kept on a table. The organisers can be seen asking people to maintain calm but with no effect. The multi-layered cake soon toppled as the crowd continued to go berserk over the cake and the celebration turned chaotic.

Massive preparations were underway to celebrate the BSP supremo’s 63rd birthday in the state capital. BSP workers had been involved in setting up big hoardings and blue-colour banners (party colour) featuring Mayawati at various places in New Delhi, including the party headquarters and Mayawati’s residence.

A similar situation had developed during the 60th birthday of the BSP chief as well, when videos had emerged in which BSP leaders and locals were then seen looting cake and clothes which were being distributed then, to mark Mayawati’s birthday in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, in yet another shocking incident, which took place in another part of the town, where a similar celebration was in full swing, BSP supporters were seen commemorating the occasion by open firing and yanking cake from each other.

According to reports, on the occasion of Mayawati’s birthday, a similar party was organised at Hina Garden, Bhagpat, Uttar Pradesh. The BSP supporters reached the party with rifles and began ‘celebratory firing’. They were also captured in a picture, snatching cake from each other.

BSP supporters caught open firing and snatching cake at an event organised to celebrate Mayawati’s birthday in Bhagpat, Uttar Pradesh

BSP district president, Jai Kumar Jatav, when confronted about this ‘celebratory firing’, though agreed that the supporters did carry the rifles to the event but denied allegations of open firing, even though pictures and videos had a completely different story to reveal.

Clearly, the celebrations to ring in BSP chief’s birthday are a different tune this year after the announcement of BSP-SP alliance than it was last year. Last year, Mayawati had mellowed down her birthday celebrations and had even brought down the ‘meet and greet’ cost to Rs 50,000 instead of Rs 1,00,000. Following the 2017 election defeat, where BSP had one of the worst performances, Mayawati had decided to keep the affair low key. However, with newly pumped confidence with the new alliance, pomp has returned to her birthday celebrations.

UAE and Saudi Arabia to invest in agricultural sector in India: Union Minister Suresh Prabhu

UAE and Saudi Arabia have decided to use India as a base to address their food security concerns, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu said at a summit of the Confederation of Indian Industry on Sunday in Mumbai.

“The UAE and Saudi Arabia will use India as a base in addressing their food security concerns. For the first time, India’s export policy identifies the potential of agriculture along with horticulture, dairy, plantation and fisheries,” Prabhu said.

“We are ready for exports. A great buyback is possible from the Gulf region. The UAE wants to invest in organic and the food processing industries. The farmers are already getting 150% of production cost as Minimum Support Price. If a farmer exports, he will earn much more,” he added.

Prabhu also stated that the two countries will be investing in organic and food processing industries. He also stated that the NDA government has removed restrictions on organic and processed products which will benefit Indian farmers who are looking for a higher price for their products.

“In the export policy, we have decided to remove all restrictions on organic products and processed products. Both the UAE and Saudi want to invest in both organic as well as food processing industries. This will be a win-win situation for the UAE, Saudi, and other GCC countries but also for us, particularly for our farmers, who want better prices to their products,” he stated.

He further asserted that there was a huge scope for agricultural exports and the NDA government’s Agricultural Export Policy will benefit the farmers of the country. He stated, “There is huge potential for agriculture exports. The Agriculture Export Policy approved by the Union Cabinet recently will give a boost not only to agriculture but also to horticulture, plantation, fisheries and dairy sectors. The policy will help fetch good prices for agricultural produce.”

The Union Minister also said that the government is looking to establish bilateral trade relationships with all countries. He displayed an eagerness to have free trade agreements with Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni: Not going gentle into the dark night

0

Of late, many questions have been raised against the inclusion of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the Indian Cricket team for One Day Internationals. With Rishabh Pant knocking at the door, the poor form that Dhoni has been going through for a while has prompted many to assert that Pant deserves an opportunity ahead of World Cup next year.

For now, it appears, Dhoni has silenced his critics with his brilliant knock against the Aussies in the second ODI of the series at Adelaide. It was a must win game for Indians as they had lost the first match in the three-match series. Dhoni scored 55 off 54 balls and remained not out to ensure that India achieved the target of 299 runs with 4 balls to spare.

It was a typical Dhoni innings from the former Indian captain. He hit only 2 sixes and no fours during his knock. An interesting feature of Dhoni’s match-winning partnership with Dinesh Karthik was the amount of runs they scored through running between the wickets. Karthik, as well, hit only 2 fours in his knock of 25 off 14 balls. Since India required 34 off 24 deliveries, the batsmen at the crease hit only one six and one four and still managed to win the match with 4 balls to spare.

Towards the end, Dhoni collapsed on the ground, evidently fatigued by the physical exertion at the middle. Some might question his physical fitness as a consequence of this but it would be incredibly harsh considering the fact that he had kept wickets for 50 overs before going out to bat where he ran an awful lot.

Over the years, Dhoni has earned himself the reputation of being a great finisher. It was never more evident than it was during today’s match. Many cricket fans would have been worried when Virat Kohli departed after scoring a brilliant century when India required 57 of 38 balls. It was indeed a tough ask but with Dhoni at the crease, it never at any point seemed difficult. There was a calmness in the manner in which he went about the job which has solidified the reputation he has earned over the years.

As goes the saying, “Form is temporary, Class is permanent.” And Dhoni showed great class with the manner in which he earned India the victory. He paced his innings in a terrific fashion. He began slowly when Kohli was around and hitting the ball beautifully as Kohli always does but by the time he finished, Dhoni had a strike rate slightly above hundred. That is class.

In the last over, when India required 7 in an over, there might have been a lot of people biting their nails. What does Dhoni do? He hits the first ball for a six, effectively ending the match right there.

There has been a tendency to treat Dhoni harshly, given the manner in which he unceremoniously removed Indian legends like Dravid and Ganguly from the team. In hindsight, it was perhaps the right decision albeit an extremely unpopular one given what India has achieved since then. His past actions have ensured that Dhoni is subject to far greater scrutiny during the twilight of his career than we would normally see and perhaps deservedly so. However, he has shown that he has still got what it takes to win India important matches under difficult circumstances.

When Kohli was caught out in the deep, India’s victory was far less than certain. If Dhoni had been dismissed as well, India could have very well lost the game since India’s lower middle order hasn’t performed too well off late. Under such circumstances, Dhoni’s innings assumes even greater significance. One shouldn’t take anything away from Karthik’s brilliant cameo as well. And one could argue, having Dhoni’s calming presence at the other end did contribute to the free-flowing manner in which Karthik batted when he came on.

There are a few beautiful lines by Dylan Thomas which appear very appropriate with regards to Dhoni’s current circumstances.

“Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”

Dhoni, certainly, doesn’t appear to be going gently into the dark night. From here on until the World Cup, every move of his will be scrutinized, every mistake of his will be criticized far more than it deserves, question marks will be raised every time he fails to live up to the expectations of cricket fans in India. Even when he scored a half-century in the first match, he received a lot of criticism for his low strike rate in the innings despite the fact that he had come to bat when India were reeling at three wickets down for four runs. But such is the expectation that Indian cricket fans have been led to have from one of Indian cricket’s greatest stars.

But Dhoni will be able to deal with such pressure. Because performing under pressure is one thing that Dhoni excels at. One should trust Dhoni to know when he should retire. He did quit test cricket when he realized that time has come. And it is to be expected that he has thought about his future and it appears that he has come to the conclusion that he can make a meaningful contribution to the team’s efforts in next year’s World Cup.

People should get off Dhoni’s back. And Dhoni’s remarkable match-winning innings in an important match under extreme pressure only shows that he has still got what it takes. He may be going through a rough path but scoring half-centuries in consecutive matches at Australia is no mean feat. A time may come when Pant or someone else may be a better option but for now, he is the best the Indian team has got.

Kumbh Mela: Kinnar Akhada joins Juna Akhada, takes part in Shahi Snan for the first time

For the first time in the history of Kumbh Mela, the Kinnar Akhada is participating in shahi Snan along with the Juna Akhada. After a long struggle for recognition, the Kinnar Akhara finally joined the Juna Akhada officially on Saturday.

The Kinnar Akhara Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi had said that the Kinnar Akhada will associate with the Juna Akhada but will not merge with it to retain its independence. “For me, it is a wonderful situation to come to this divine Prayagraj Kumbh. For me, we are one of the most conservative societies in the world where the acceptance of the third gender is remarkably outstanding. For us, this participation is about mainstream society accepting us. This is Akhada beyond sexuality. The creator is within us and once we perish we will go back to him. Our doors are open for all,” said Tripathi.

The Chief patron of the Juna Akhara Mahant Hari Giri and the Kinnar Akhara Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi performed a joint puja on the bank of river Yamuna in the presence of other prominent members of both the Akharas.

The Kumbh Mela which is recognised as the “intangible cultural heritage of humanity” by the UNESCO, started from January 14 and will go on till March 3 at the confluence of the three rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati (now extinct) in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier, the Kinnar Akhara had also participated in the grand procession called Peshwai in Prayagraj. Lakshmi Narayan Tripathy, the Mahamandaleswar had called it a great step towards inclusion and social acceptance.

Karnataka crisis: Amit Shah might meet Karnataka BJP MLAs as independent MLAs extend support to BJP

In a fast developing story, hours after two independent MLAs withdrew their support from the Congress-JD(S)-led coalition, BJP President Amit Shah is expected to meet the BJP MLAs from Karnataka who are currently lodged in a Gurugram hotel. As reported by Republic TV, some BJP MLAs have claimed that Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy is trying to get in touch with them and poach them.

Downplaying the crisis on hand, Kumaraswamy has claimed that his government is stable and intact. He said that he is in touch with the Congress MLAs who are in Mumbai and all is well. “Two MLAs withdrawing support from my government does not matter,” he said. Meanwhile, the independent MLAs have confirmed they will back the BJP.

As we have reported earlier, rumours of ‘Operation Lotus’ have been doing the rounds recently. DK Sivakumar had alleged that the BJP was indulging in ‘horse-trading’ and looking to poach the Congress party’s MLAs. He also accused CM Kumaraswamy of being lenient on the BJP.

The Congress-JD(S) alliance in Karnataka has not been a smooth one ever since the two have stitched up this awkward coalition with the sole purpose to keep BJP out of power in Karnataka.

Recently, Kumaraswamy’s predicaments with the Congress laid bare when he claimed that he was being treated like a clerk instead of a chief minister. However, this was not the first time Chief Minister Kumaraswamy has lamented over his discomfort to work with the Congress party. Earlier in July, expressing his unhappiness over the coalition government, Kumaraswamy had cried saying he was unhappy and swallowing the poison of a coalition government.

Kumaraswamy also launched an attack on ally partner Congress over seat-sharing arrangement for the Lok Sabha elections. He said that ‘Congress should not treat JD(S) like third-grade citizens’.

Kerala government accused of flood relief funds misuse, Lokayukta issues notice to CM and ministers

CM Pinarayi Vijayan and other state ministers have received a notice from the state Lokayukta in response to a complaint regarding the misuse of the flood relief fund by the government. The Lokayukta has accepted the complaint of misuse of the Kerala flood relief fund.

The complainant is a former Kerala University employee R S Sasikumar and has alleged that money to the tune of lakhs was authorised from the relief fund to the families of the late NCP leader Uzhavoor Vijayan, former Chengannur MLA K K Ramachandran Nair and the policeman who escorted Kodiyeri Balakrishnan without even an application from these people. He has also alleged that the decision to grant money was taken without any discussion in the Cabinet meeting.

Justice Pius C Kuriakose headed the Lokayukta bench and accepted the complaint lodged by Sasikumar. A notice has been issued to 17 ministers including the Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to be present in the court on February 15, 2019.

The petitioner’s advocate George Poonthottam contended that the relief fund was not the chief minister’s private property that could be spent arbitrarily without following the norms. It has to be granted through set procedures, he argued. However, the director of the prosecution, Manjeri Sreedharan debated that the government has full rights to spend the money it received from budgetary allocation as per its wishes.

It is noteworthy to mention that Lokayukta and Upalokayukta held differing opinions on the matter. However, Justice Pius passed over the complaint to Upalokayuktas K P Balachandran and A K Basheer. The case will be reconsidered on February 15, 2019.

In the past, CM Pinarayi Vijayan had been accused of wrong use of Kerala flood relief fund. He was accused of using flood relief fund for his chopper ride. When the matter was highlighted to him, he brazened it out, claiming “There’s nothing wrong in this. This is a usual practice.”

The Kerala floods in August this year were the worst calamity seen in the state in decades. There was a plethora of false information and malicious propaganda during the flood attempting to spread misinformation and malice between the people. While people from all over the country had supported the relief work wholeheartedly by donating to the CM’s relief fund there was also the fake news of the UAE offering financial help and the Indian government declining it.

Twist in the tale: Kerala activist claims it was Kanakdurga who beat up her mother-in-law, a staunch Ayyappa devotee

Earlier in the day, news emerged that Kanakdurga, one of the women who had entered Sabarimala through a Communist conspiracy, was beaten by her mother-in-law when she returned home. As per reports, her family did not support her antics. She has allegedly been receiving threats and has been provided with police protection. She is currently admitted to a hospital.

The reports had suggested that Kanakdurga was hit on the head with a wooden plank by her mother-in-law after a verbal scuffle broke out between the two when Kanakdurga returned home after desecrating the Sabarimala temple. Reportedly, the mother-in-law is a staunch devotee Lord Ayyappa.

While reports had already emerged that Kanakdurga too pushed the mother-in-law which resulted in “minor” injuries, the tale that is now emerging is different.

The Kerala State Secretary of BJYM, Sandeep Varier posted a video on Facebook which showed the mother-in-law lying on a hospital bed.

OpIndia reached out to Varier to understand what the situation was. Varier alleged that he was in the area of Mallapuram for unrelated work. That time, he heard the news that Kanakdurga had been attacked by her mother-in-law. He said he was then informed by his partymen that it was Kanakdurga who had attacked the mother-in-law and that she was admitted to the hospital.

After receiving the news, Varier proceeded to the hospital where the 80-year-old Sumati, mother-in-law of Kanakdurga was admitted. He alleged that what actually happened in very different from what the Media has been reporting. He says that Kanakdurga went home with the police and other CPM local leaders in the morning. She wanted to enter the house and that time, the mother-in-law, who is a staunch devotee of Lord Ayyappa and Kanakdurga had a quarrel between them.

During the quarrel, Varier says, Kanakdurga attacked Sumati, her mother-in-law.

According to Varier, this might have been a planned sequence of events by Kanakdurga since she was accompanied by police and local communist leaders. At that time, Varier says, Kanakdurga pushed her mother-in-law and she fell down. When Kanakdurga was pushing Sumati, she too tried to push back. At that time, the police and communist leaders called for a taxi and took Kanakdurga to the hospital.

Sandeep Varier says that the news that Kanakdurga was attacked by her mother-in-law was spread by the communist leaders and Kanakdurga that she was attacked by the mother-in-law with a stick. He says that this is being propagated so the mother in law can be charged under IPC 307 or IPC 308.

He claims that in the morning, he received a video of Kanakdurga going to the hospital where there was no injury on her head.

He says that the mother-in-law was eventually admitted to the hospital by her relatives and is currently in substantial pain because she was pushed and she fell down. He says that the latest news he received was that Kanakdurga was taken to the Medical College and is currently in the ICU. This sequence of events, he claims, is a ‘drama’ by the State government and the police so that she can get inside her house and stay with the family.

According to The News Minute, Johnson, who had helped Kanakadurga find houses, told TNM, ”Her mother-in-law was against her going to the temple. So when she was back home she didn’t allow her to enter the house and beat her with a wood rod. Kanaka is admitted to a hospital in Perinthalmanna. She was haemorrhaging.” Another friend is reported to have said, “Her mother-in-law is a conservative woman. She was not in favour of Kanakadurga entering Sabarimala temple.”

The full truth is yet to present itself with two contrasting versions emerging now.

Two Independent MLAs withdraw support from Karnataka government amidst rumours of ‘Operation Lotus’

Two independent MLAs, H Nagesh and R Shankar, have withdrawn their support from the Karnataka government. In their individual letters to the Governor of the state, the MLAs stated, “I would like to bring to your kind attention, that I am withdrawing my support extended to the coalition government in Karnataka headed by Congress & JDS parties with immediate effect.”

Shankar said that he wanted a change in the government on Makar Sankranti. He added that the government should be efficient.

Nagesh said that the coalition government had utterly failed in providing a stable government. He further claimed that there was no understanding between the coalition partners. He cited these reasons to go with the BJP.

Along with several disclosures of rifts within the JD(S)-Congress alliance doing the rounds, continuous news of many regional leaders distancing themselves from the party have emerged in the past.

The dissent between the two parties had surfaced in June too, following the Cabinet announcement of the HD Kumaraswamy led Karnataka government, when several Congress leaders, as well as members of the JD(S), had expressed their displeasure over the allocation of ministerial berths.

There were reports of senior Congress leader Ramesh Jarkiholi defecting to BJP with a dozen other MLAs. Jarkiholi was stripped of his cabinet berth in the recent shuffle and had spoken openly about his displeasure.

Bihar: Saddam Hussein and Farman Khan arrested for kidnapping and raping an 8-year-old girl

An eight-year-old girl was kidnapped and gang-raped in Bihar’s Western Champaran District’s area of Bettiah, on 14th January. The girl was kidnapped by two perpetrators named Saddam Hussein and Farman Khan, who reportedly have confessed their crimes, near Bettiah railway station on Cant road, late Sunday. The victim was raped for nearly four hours, in a moving car and later abandoned near a petrol pump.

According to reports, the victim was at a tea stall near Bettiah railway station, accompanied by her elder sister, and waiting for the bus to go to their maternal uncle’s house in Mainatand thana area. The victim reportedly was sick and was coming with her sister from Narktiyaganj railway station, where the sisters actually lived.
