‘Judges sit in this cozy area where nobody comes to question them. People question me, I am responsible’: Delhi BJP chief to SC

The Supreme Court has reserved its order on the contempt proceedings against Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari. Tiwari is alleged to have broken the seal of illegal premises that was sealed by the civic agency at Delhi.

Senior advocate Vikas Singh argued on behalf of Tiwari that the monitoring committee was carrying out sealing drives in unauthorised colonies and wanted “to terrorise the people of Delhi”. “The particular colony was never entrusted with the monitoring committee. It was beyond the jurisdiction of the committee. The monitoring committee is terrorising people of Delhi“, submitted Singh.

He further alleged that the monitoring committee and corrupt officials are running a “corruption racket in the capital”. He also added that the monitoring committee is not doing its work in a responsible manner.

The bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur, S Abdul Nazeer and Deepak Gupta was further told that the act did not amount to contempt and that as a politician, he is answerable to the people. “Judges sit in this cozy area where nobody comes to question them. People question me, I am responsible,” Singh said arguing on behalf of Tiwari.

Singh also claimed that “there are numerous illegal constructions across Delhi but no action is taken against them” while adding that in a particular locality “seals were broken and the EDMC officials were beaten up but no case was registered against them.”

It was also argued that if Tiwari hadn’t broken the seal, the mob which had gathered may have resorted to violence. He has been asked to appear before the court again when it will pass the order.

To honour one of its greatest sons, the state of Gujarat is gearing up to the inauguration of World’s tallest statue- ‘The Statue of Unity’,  dedicated to Iron Man of India’ Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on Sadhu Bet island.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Statue of Unity, a memorial dedicated to India’s first Home Minister Sardar Patel. The statue stands tall at 182 metres from the ground and 240 metres from the Narmada river base, is touted to be the tallest statue in the world built at the cost of over Rs 3300 crore.

The Gujarat state government has planned various cultural events on the occasion of the ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’ (National Unity Day) to mark the 143rd birth anniversary of India’s former Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The people of Gujarat have already arrived at Sadhu Bet island to witness the historic occasion. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the statue by offering an ‘Abhishek’ of Narmada water and then address the gathering.

Reportedly, the BJP government has planned an event similar to the Republic Day to mark the unveiling of the Statue of Unity. The three-hour ceremony will include flypasts by the Indian Airforce, performances by ceremonial bands of the Army, Navy and the Indian Airforce. The folk artists from Punjab, Assam, Mizoram and Gujarat will also be performing at the event.

On this historic occasion, lakhs of people have also joined the ‘Run for Unity’ marathon held across the country to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the ‘Run for Unity’ marathon from Major Dhyanchand Stadium in New Delhi. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan flagged off the event in Odhisa while Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman participated a ‘Run for Unity’ marathon in Chennai.

Delhi Metro will join elite league of metro networks having span of over 300 kilometres

0

The opening of 17.86 km long section of Pink Line metro between Shiv Vihar and Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake will put Delhi Metro in the elite league of rail and metro networks around the globe with the operational length of over 300 km, say reports.

DMRC recently has initiated various big projects to ease out the commuter’s rush. Especially the opening of Magenta line (Botanical Garden – Janakpuri West) and Pink line (Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar) have helped to reduce the crowd on the trains. For more relief to commuters, DMRC will add another 200 coaches, turning the six-coach trains to eight-coach one.

“With this, the Delhi Metro will cross the 300-km mark, and join the league of the top metro systems around the world, which have already done so, like metros in London, Beijing, Shanghai, New York,” Said Anuj Dayal, Executive Director, Corporate Communications at DMRC.

He also said that the Delhi Metro will expand to 314 km with 229 stations after the inauguration of the new segment of Pink Line.

The new Shiv Vihar – Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake section of Pink Line is scheduled to be flagged off for normal operations on Oct 31 by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia and Minister of States (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri.

The Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus and Lajpat Nagar section was the last corridor opened by DMRC, which is 8.1 km long and extended the span of the metro line to 296 km. DMRC has opened over 80 km of new corridors this year, and the opening of Delhi Metro’s Phase-III, including the Lajpat Nagar-Mayur-Pocket 1 is expected by the end of 2018. With the total addition of 80 km this year, Delhi Metro will become the world’s 4th largest network.

According to the report, the list of construction feats achieved by DMRC has multiplied this year. It recorded the construction of the second highest structure in the metro network, crossing over the height of 21 m at the existing Karkardooma (Blue Line). The highest metro rail structure, at a height of 23.6 m lies between Mayapuri and South Campus, is in the Dhaula Kuan area.

The Naxals murdered Achyuta Nanda Sahu, but the Editors Guild killed him

“Do you know a man is not dead till his name is spoken?”

As journalists and content generators, we write about, talk about and report terrible tragedies every day. Every day, there is at least that one piece of news that makes us question humanity. One such incident today was when a team of Doordarshan news channel had gone to Dantewada to record a documentary film in the Naxal-affected area where elections are due to be held for the first time when the Maoists ambushed and attacked them. The slain Doordarshan cameraman was identified as Achyuta Nanda Sahu.

The Editors Guild of India, the body of journalists current chaired by Shekhar Gupta is meant to fight for journalists’ rights. Protect them when they can, and speak up for them when they can’t speak up for themselves.

After the news of Sahu’s murder surfaced, the Editors Guild released a “heartfelt” message.

They wrote:

When they tweeted this statement, the text of the tweet read:

“Editors Guild of India has issued a statement on the Dantewada Naxal attack that killed a Doordarshan camera person. You may also read the full statement here”.

Not once in the statement or the accompanying tweet was the name of the camera person mentioned.

Let us compare today’s statement to what the Editors Guild said when two journalists were sentenced to seven years in prison… in Myanmar. We know the two journalists were named Wa Lone and Kyaw Soeoo because Editors Guild named them in their statement. Their statement is as follows:

The Editors Guild released a long-winded statement when a communist mouthpiece was penalised for not adhering to the law of the land. The Registrar of Newspapers cancelled the registration of Desher Katha, which is a mouthpiece of the Communist Party of India – Marxist for ‘unauthorised changed in ownership’. Their statement, in this case, is substantially longer than the one released today.. where they were talking about Achyuta Nanda Sahu being murdered by armed Naxals. Their full statement was:

Then there is the phraseology of today’s statement which was extremely interesting. “Attack that killed a camera person”. “Saddened”. “Death of camera person”. “Condolences”. “Urge for protection”.

Compare that with the terminology used in the other two statements. “Strongly condemns”. “Opposed to”. “Blow to democracy”. “Draconian step”. “Demands”, so on and so forth.

In the profession of journalism or any content generation, for that matter, the message that words convey is of paramount importance. A man (or woman) of the letter knows the value a slight change of wording holds. One ought to know the difference between “anger” and “rage”, “saddened” and “outraged”, “death and “murder”, “urges” and “demands”. One would assume that the difference is not lost on the Editors Guild, no less. What then could be the reason for the Editors Guild to issue a pussyfooting, vanilla statement when a journalist has been brutally murdered by armed Naxals while shooting word bullets when a communist mouthpiece’s registration is cancelled for not adhering to the law?

What inspired that Editors Guild to name the two journalists imprisoned in Myanmar under the law of their land, and condemn their arrest in the strongest possible terms, while treating Achyuta Nanda Sahu like a nameless, dispensible pawn?

It is said that a man is not dead till his name is spoken. Even in death, his spirit lives on. He lives on as his name echoes through the ages. The Editors Guild has seldom stood up for the ones who truly put their lives at risk bringing the readers stories from the most dangerous parts of the country. They ignore the very folks who risk their lives to report, so people like them can sit in their air-conditioned chambers and opine on the news they harvested.

The Editors Guild could not even bring themselves to name Achyuta Nanda Sahu. To honour his spirit. To honour his sacrifice. To news. To his job. To the Editors Guild, Achyuta Nanda Sahu was just a cameraman. A pawn that didn’t deserve a seat at the elite table. A pawn that is meant to serve and enable the opinions that the five-star journalists and agenda pushers pen down. He didn’t deserve to be named.

One is reminded of journalist Jagendra Singh, who was burnt alive in Uttar Pradesh allegedly because he posted some news reports about illegal mining and land grabbing by a local Samajwadi Party leader Ram Murti Verma, who was also a minister in Akhilesh Yadav cabinet. The silence of the five-star journalists in Singh’s case echoes till date.

One is forced to wonder if these journalists’ murders are met with a cold shrug and indifference because their work doesn’t cater to the perfumed elite. The champagne sipping circle to which the Editors Guild members and most of the Lutyen’s pen pushers belong.

For the Editors Guild, Achyuta Nanda Sahu didn’t serve their agenda. The communist mouthpiece and journalists covering Rohingya’s in Myanmar did. Democracy, freedom, liberty and rights don’t perish for lowly cameramen, they perish only for communist mouthpieces.

The Naxals murdered Achyuta Nanda Sahu but the Editors Guild killed him by erasing his name from their condolence. They killed him by disregarding his spirit. By denying him life in death by letting his name live on. The Editors Guild just proved that their outrage is reserved for those join their purpose, not the ones who serve the cause of journalism.

Supreme Court upholds the lower court’s life imprisonment sentence to Shahabuddin

0

Listening to the petition filed by the infamous criminal Shahabuddin challenging the lower court’s verdict, the Supreme Court of India today has rejected his appeal and maintained the Patna High court’s verdict of life imprisonment.

Mohammad Shahabuddin is a politician who was elected four times as a Member of Parliament from Siwan, Bihar, with the Rashtriya Janata Dal(RJD) party of Lalu Prasad Yadav, and 2-times as MLA, to the Bihar Vidhan Sabha. The first case against Shahabuddin was registered in 1986 at the age of 19. Thereafter, several criminal cases against him got added to the list. A history sheet was opened in his name in Hussainganj police station and he was declared an ‘A’ category criminal.

During 2004 elections, Though Shahabuddin was in jail, his opponents were intimidated for campaigning against him. Immediately after the elections, which he won by a margin of 100,000 votes (16%), nine party workers of the nearest candidate Om Prakash Yadav of JDU, were found murdered, allegedly for daring to campaign against him. He had been winning Lok Sabha elections from Siwan since 1996, prior to which he was elected twice to the Bihar Legislative Assembly (1990 and 1995).

In August 2004, two brothers Satish Roshan and Girish Roshan were abducted from their shops after they denied paying extortion of Rs 2.5 lakhs to Shahabuddin’s henchmen. The brothers were then drenched in acid in Pratappur village by Shahabuddin and his aides before brutally killing them. Later, the only eyewitness of the massacre and his third brother Rajiv Roshan was also shot dead on June 16, 2014.

In November 2005, a special team of the Bihar Police arrested him from Delhi when he had come to attend the Parliament session. Just before his arrest, the police had seized several illegal weapons, Army’s night vision devices and modern arms and ammunition made in Pakistan’s ordinance factories. Citing many convictions in criminal cases, he was debarred from contesting 2009 general elections.

Apart from Shahabuddin, his associates, Raj Kumar Sah, Sheikh Alam, and Munna Mian, were also convicted by a special court in Siwan on December 12, 2015. After this, Shahabuddin had appealed against the verdict in 2017 by the Patna High Court, but his appeal was rejected there too.

Dawn-to-dusk hunger strike by BJP over arrest of Sabarimala protesters in Kerala

A dawn-to-dusk hunger strike by BJP workers began on Tuesday, right in front of Kerala DGP’s office, further intensifying the agitation against the CPI(M)-led LDF government’s crackdown on Sabarimala protesters.

PS Sreedharan Pillai, state president of BJP, claimed that the ruling CPI(M) was on the road to “liquidation” and that the party’s graph was coming down. The strike commenced with marches towards offices of the Superintendent of Police in all district headquarters, protesting against the arrest of Sabarimala devotees by the state government.

BJP also announced that a ‘Rath Yatra’ will begin in order to “save the customs and traditions” of the hill shrine, starting November 8 to 13 – from Kasaragod to Pathanamthitta, where the Sabarimala temple is located.

As per reports, around 529 cases have been registered and over 3,500 people have been arrested with regard to the case of protests against the implementation of the Supreme Court verdict, allowing women of all age groups to enter the Lord Ayyappa temple.

Former Union minister and party’s lone MLA in the state assembly O Rajagopal and Veteran Marxist leader MM Lawrence’s grandson were among the protesters, to name a few. BJP national president Amit Shah, who was in Kerala on October 27, extended his full support to the devotees protesting against the entry of women of all ages into the shrine.

In the light of recent events regarding the Sabarimala case, the temple witnessed high drama when a group of women aged between 10 to 50 years of age were prevented from entering the temple by protesting devotees as it opened for monthly pujas between October 17 and 22.

The Lord Ayyappa temple’s three-month-long pilgrim season is commencing from November 17 and the state government has reiterated that all devotees would be allowed to offer prayers at the shrine. The temple will also open for a day on November 5 for a special puja.

Media spreads lie that stones were pelted at Shaan’s concert in Guwahati, the singer refutes

On October 30, several media houses reported that during a concert by singer Shaan at Guwahati, stones and paper balls were thrown at the stage, in protest against a Bengali song sung by the singer.

This was reported by major media outlets like ANI, Firstpost, Hindustan Times etc.

The reports use the word ‘stones’, implying that multiple stones were hurled at the singer.

But the fact is that no stone was pelted at Shaan at the event, and only a paper ball was thrown at the stage. But a section of media decided to sensationalise the news and added stone pelting to it. The video below shows exactly what happened at the concert.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GL1O5TYsaI]

The incident was caught on camera and it can be seen that while Shaan performing a Hindi song, someone had thrown a piece of paper crumbled as a ball at the stage. After it was thrown, Shaan, picks it up, unfolds it, folds it again and throws it back. The singer also gets visibly agitated for his performance being interrupted like this and asks that the person to be brought to the stage. While the orchestra keeps playing the music of the song, Shaan continues, “whoever you are, never throw things at an artist”. Among the roar of the crowd, he says, “learn to respect a performer, if you don’t like, go away”.

After this, he continues with the song and completed the concert as scheduled. He didn’t halt the concert as reported by some, there was only a pause for about a minute. It was a minor incident that is not very unusual at such public events.

Seeing the reports of stone pelting at his concert in Guwahati, Shaan tweeted to say that it is a lie. He posted on Twitter “Complete lies!!! One Paper ticket folded up was thrown on stage by One Person…”

The singer was responding to a report of the same by Quint, which also included a video clip of the incident. However, very cleverly Quint had shown only Shaan’s response to the incident on the stage, removing the part where the piece of paper (and not stone) was thrown towards him.

In Assam, some organisations are trying to create a divide between Assamese speaking people and Bengali speaking people of the state. In the context of the proposed amendment to citizenship amendment bill which seeks to give citizenship to people of religious minority in neighbouring countries, some organisations believe that it is a ploy to settle Hindu Bangladeshis in the state which will eventually make indigenous Assamese people minorities. And now certain people are trying to colour any incident into Assamese-Bengali conflict, like this one, and national media houses are contributing to that by such wrong reports.

Indian army conducts retaliatory strikes at Pakistan army’s brigade headquarters in PoK

0

Indian troops have bombarded Pakistan Army’s Hazira Brigade in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) along LoC, according to reports. It was done in retaliation to October 23 shelling of 93rd infantry brigade headquarters and an army camp in Poonch, in Jammu and Kashmir.

The attack also aimed at several terror camps, situated around administrative HQ in Hazira area. Reports state 12 rounds of 120 mm mortars and artillery ammunition were used in the offensive. The rounds met no response from Pakistan’s side, and was done in early hours.

“In response to Pakistani army’s firing of stray shells on Poonch and Jhallas on October 23, 2018, the Indian Army has sent a strong signal by firing at Pakistani army administrative headquarters… and the residents of border villages also reported that they could see smoke emanating,” PTI quoted security officials as saying.

The attack was a consequence of the 23rd October Pakistan’s shelling of Indian camps in Poonch, which fortunately had no casualty. Pakistani troops had fired rocket-propelled grenades out of which one round landed on a barrel type store shelter in Poonch causing it to catch fire, reports state. Indian army had instantly replied with rounds of fire, but real retaliation came yesterday.

The 23rd October shelling was following the foiled infiltration attempt by Pakistan’s Border Action Team at Sunderbani sector of J&K.

The gravity of the strikes launched could be ascertained by the ground reports that agencies are reporting. Many videos and images are also doing rounds on social media and mainstream media.

Keeping alive its tradition of exercising restraint, reports narrate, Indian army did not resort to hurting civilians in areas abutting LoC like Hajira, Bandi Gopalpur, Nikial, Samani and Khuiratta, despite incessant provocation from Pakistan’s side.

Army sees it as a “good reply” to Pakistan Army, and also stated that Pakistan Army has been harmed substantially and casualties are also there.

In the “proactive and precise” targeting after September 2016 surgical strikes by Indian Army, over 138 Pakistan soldiers were killed in 2017. About 70 Pakistani soldiers were killed in the Indian Army’s action at the LoC until May this year. The retaliatory action forced the Pakistan Army to request for a ceasefire in the face of the mounting number of casualties.

India has maintained a suspension of talks with Pakistan, for its repeated offensives against Indian troops after reports of killing of three policemen in J&K.

Sabarimala Thantri family disowns Rahul Easwar, says he has nothing to do with practices of the temple

0

The Thazhmon Madhom Thantri family, who are the head priests of Sabarimala Ayyappan Temple, have dissociated themselves from the Ayyappa Dharma Sena president Rahul Easwar in a statement issued by the family as per reports. Rahul Easwar had been leading the protests against the entry of women in the Sabarimala temple.

The Thantri family in a public statement have clarified that Rahul Easwar was in no way related to the practices and traditions of the Sabarimala temple and the Thantris. And he has nothing to do with the ritualistic practices and usages at Sabarimala or with the tantric rights of the Thazhamon family.

It is notable here that Easwar was taken into custody on 27 October after his statement that there were people ready to cut themselves and spill blood to forcefully close the temple in case any women entered.

Easwar is related to the family from his mother’s side. Easwar’s uncle, Thantri Kandararu Mohanararu told media, “Rahul Easwar is not related to the family (practices in any way). My sister got married and moved away. We practice a patrilineal system now. Which means only the sons inherit the legacy”.

The statement was issued by the Thantri family in response to Easwar’s speech where he had said there is an organised conspiracy to spill blood to desecrate the temple, in case women entered. “If any one (women between the ages of 10 and 50) tried to enter the temple with the help of the police, about 20 people were ready to make a cut on their hand and shed blood. If that happens, the temple would have to be closed for three days (on account of desecration). There is no need to open it no matter who says so. If we are being provoked like that, we too have our ways. If blood or urine falls on the temple, it has to be closed. This is faith”, Easwar had said.

The Thantri family disapproved of Easwar’s plan to pollute the temple. “We want the sanctum to be the place of peace and devotion, we want to maintain it that way. Nothing should happen which would pollute the holy sanctum which will make it impure. Everyone must cooperate and work towards upholding the sanctity of Ayyappa’s sanctum,” the statement read.

The statement also revealed that Easwar had made an attempt to become a priest in Sabarimala by using a fake letter pad of Sabarimala Chief Thantri Kandararu Maheswarar. He also allegedly took his grandfather’s signature on blank cheques and withdrew large amounts on multiple occasions.

Referring to the Chief Minister’s speech on Sabarimala as painful, the family in the statement said, “Thantri family has always enjoyed a good relationship with the Devaswom board and this will continue to do so. In Pathanamthitta, respected CM’s speech brought forth great pain. We believe, it must have been the result of some misunderstanding that the CM has taken such a stance.”

Rahul Easwar was arrested by the police during the Sabarimala protests and cases on charges of rioting, unlawful assembly and several other sections were brought against him. He was later released on bail.
