Who are these goons jumping on Tanushree’s car from this 2008 viral video?

Ever since Tanushree Dutta spoke out about the sexual harassment she faced in the film industry and accused film actor Nana Patekar of sexually abusing her, many people have spoken out in support of Dutta. Many have even questioned why did she stay quiet all these years, but the fact is she had spoken up the time the alleged incident took place as well, and even later, but it still took 10 long years for people in the powerful position to speak out and come out in her support.

A video, possibly from a filmy gossip show, from ten years back has resurfaced from the sets of ‘Horn Ok Please’ where Tanushree can be seen walking away from the set, visibly upset.

The voiceover, in the above video, mentions how as per the script, Tanushree had to dance on an ‘item song’ and Nana Patekar had to touch her, which Tanushree didn’t like. The woman voiceover artist, then condescendingly says,

Madam (Dutta) then moved towards her vanity van which stalled the shooting of the item song for full 3 hours. And despite lot of pleading, she refused to come back to the sets. This is nothing. Things worsened when her (Dutta’s) bodyguards acted strictly towards the media and the police was called in. Tanushree’s tantrums could’ve cost the producers a loss of Rs. 1.5 crore. To save that, Tanushree was removed and Rakhi Sawant was called in.”

Rest of the video talks about how Rakhi stepped in to save the day. We will save that for another day. But first, let us talk about the video.

First of all, why is the filmy gossip show referring to the allegations of Tanushree as ‘tantrums’? Part of the footage was then shared on social media by claims that the people jumping on Tanushree’s car were the goons/political party karyakartas called by the producer to intimidate Dutta. Actor Renuka Shahane shared a video with the caption claiming that these goons were called by the producer.

Facebook post by Renuka Shahane claiming the goons harassing Dutta are from a political party

The video shared by Shahane is here:

But are these really goons from a political party? Notice this man in a striped orange t-shirt? He has a video recording camera in his hands. Which political party sends its goons to video record their deeds where they terrify people? Oh wait, could it be someone from the media who were present there who decided to unleash their inner goon?

Notice the camera in his hand?

At first, it appears like he is being restrained by others present there.

With video camera in one hand, he is removing air pressure from the tyre of the car.

Now, the orange t-shirt fellow is bravely showing off how macho he is by giving Dutta a flat tyre. While Dutta is sitting inside that car and dozens are banging on the window and jumping on the roof of her car already. Nope, not terrifying at all.

And now he is climbing her car.

And our braveheart decides to climb the car bonnet. Sweet. Why are these ‘political goons’ doing this? Did they come on behest of the producer and Nana Patekar as it is being widely talked about?

One Aditya Kumar, who claims to be a former Sahara employee, says that this incident of harassment is from another time and these goons are not political goons but Sahara channel crew.

Former Sahara employee claiming the video is from another time

This is corroborated by one Aakansha Sharma, who also claims to be a former Sahara employee.

Another former Sahara employee corroborating the goons are crew of Sahara

The orange t-shirt braveheart is identified as one Pawan Bhardwaj by the former colleagues of his, who think he just reacted to Dutta ‘abusing’ one of their teammates and broke their camera. But then, going back to the first video from the filmy gossip which also talks about the harassment on the sets of Horn Ok Please, we could see the same orange t-shirt fellow being taken away in a police van.

Orange t-shirt fellow being taken away by police.

The voiceover artist had mentioned how the reporters lost their cool when Dutta’s bodyguards ‘misbehaved’ with them. After all, how dare you mess with the press?

So what exactly is it? Who attacked Dutta? From the information which is available, the following can be concluded:

  1. The goons who attacked Tanushree were perhaps not from a political party, but from the journalism fraternity.
  2. Two separate videos with seemingly separate footage make it probable that both the videos are from the same incident when Dutta complained of harassment by Nana Patekar
  3. The journalists lost their cool when Dutta’s bodyguards ‘misbehaved’ or perhaps just asked them to back off from a traumatised woman. Perhaps they were just being sensitive towards a woman who had complained of sexual harassment and expected basic human decency from the photo and video journalists to leave the woman alone as she deals with it.
  4. Why are journalists creating a ruckus are being passed off as political party goons?
  5. And if Nana Patekar has indeed misbehaved with Dutta, the law will take its course. Even after 10 or more years, he may pay for his deeds, but what about the journalists? What about these men who traumatised Dutta? Who is going to pay for it? Media conflating the issue when people from their own fraternity seem involved in harassing her is a travesty.
  6. Police being a mute spectator is even worse. But did they keep quiet because ‘media se panga kaun le’? Who really wants to mess with goons armed with camera and pen?
  7. And what about the filmy gossip ‘journalist’ who referred to the incident as ‘tantrum’? Why did she have to belittle the allegations?

Heart goes out to Dutta for having the courage to speak up and stand up against the mighty and the powerful. It is about time people not only speak up but also introspect on how sensitively and sensibly issues are handled.

Arrested ‘Urban Naxal’ spewed venom at event by same organisation that called Amarnath Yatra ‘militarised pilgrimage’

A speech by Gautam Navlakha, the arrested ‘Urban Naxal’ has been doing the rounds on social media recently. In the speech, he can be seen making contentious remarks which would be regarded by many as seditious and inflammatory.

The event where the speech was made was called “Whither Kashmir? Freedom or Enslavement?” and was organized by the Jammu & Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society at Srinagar (JKCCS) on the 24th of October, 2010. We have documented in our series, ‘Demystifying Civil Society’, that the JKCCS was the organization which had published the report demonizing Amarnath Yatra in collaboration with a foreign-funded organisation that received grants from Christian organisations abroad. It speaks volumes for the integrity of our mainstream media that they treated the report as objective truth from a neutral source when in reality, the sources have good motivation to tarnish the reputation of the Yatra, a Hindu pilgrimage which serves as a reminder of the Hindu heritage of Kashmir.

In the speech, Navlakha glorifies Kashmiri separatism and says that it is commendable that in spite of deaths, rapes and disappearances, the people of Kashmir have kept the dream of ‘Azaadi’ alive. He can also be seen glorifying Kashmiri terrorists. He says, “For 21 years, gunmen have kept the movement alive. This is a testament to their capabilities. They have committed mistakes, yes, they have committed many mistakes. But even so, if not for them, this movement would have died long ago. And in the past three years, they have taken the movement to such a level that if you do not get freedom in spite of that, then the success of it depends entirely on you. If someone can make the impossible happen, it is you.” He also suggests that students in schools should be used to spread the ideas of ‘Azaadi’.

Navlakha goes on to add, “In my life, I have always recognized the importance of guns. I have always maintained that people can use whatever means necessary to resist occupation and oppression. I respect guns. And therefore, I also recognize the responsibilities of them. And I condemn those who use these guns to oppress people.” At one point during his speech, the audience can be heard raising slogans of “We want Freedom!”.

It was in the same event that Arundhati Roy had infamously said that Kashmir was never an integral part of India and claimed that India had become a colonizing power as soon as it won its independence from the British. “Kashmir has never been an integral part of India. It is a historical fact. Even the Indian government has accepted this,” Roy had claimed.

It is also pertinent to mention that the JKCCS is affiliated to the CDRO, an umbrella organization that has intricate links to alleged ‘Urban Naxals’ and has an organization from Manipur with separatist inclinations coordinating under its banner as well.

Karnataka Minister garlands Sir M Visvesvaraya statue, but fails to name whose statue it was

0

Karnataka’s Minister for Forests, R Shankar ended up in an embarrassing situation after he garlanded a newly installed statue of Sir M Visvesvaraya but had no idea about whose statue it was.

On Friday, R Shankar was in Muddenahalli of Chikkaballapura district, the birthplace of Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya after the locals wanted the Minister to visit the memorial. The minister visited the memorial and paid his respects to the M Visvesvaraya and statue.

The video of this incident has gone viral in which the Minister while speaking to the media looked confused and failed to tell whose statue it was after he spoke about garlanding the statue. He was caught in an embarrassing situation and was seen asking one of his assistants about whose statue it was.

Shankar was at Chikkaballapur for a review meeting and later went to check the progress of Visvesvaraya Institute of Advanced Technology. After the incident, the forest officials reportedly tried to downplay it and said that the Minister was aware of whose statue it was and was only just confirming.

BJP in Karnataka has taken it as an opportunity to recall an incident where Congress president Rahul Gandhi had failed to pronounce the name of M Vishvesvaraya.

Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya is considered to be one of India’s greatest engineers. He was one of the first recipients of the country’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna in 1955. He had worked as a Diwan of Mysore state and also credited to have planned and built many cities of Mysore province including the present Mysuru city. His birth anniversary is celebrated as Engineers’ Day in the country.

‘Non-partisan’ journalist Karan Thapar appeals to people to join a platform of the Congress party

0

‘Eminent’ mainstream media ‘journalist’, Karan Thapar, in a video shared on Twitter by the official account of All India Professionals’ Congress (AIPC), has appealed to people join the AIPC.

He said, “It wasn’t just a pleasure to be at the AIPC, it was an honour and I have to say that I enjoyed myself enormously.” He goes on to add, “It’s an experience that I recommend everyone. You must come and join the AIPC, these are wonderful events.” The AIPC describes itself as “your platform to contribute to the advancement of progressive politics in India”.

The video, interestingly, ends with an advertisement for an event involving journalist Rajdeep Sardesai.

Karan Thapar has been accused of publishing concocted conversations as truth in his book ‘The Devil’s Advocate’. He has also insinuated that in the past that India is not a civilized nation. Accusations have also been made against him that he did not want a certain actress in a TV serial because she had a dark complexion. Thapar has been known to criticize Prime Minister Modi for his attire as well.

The mainstream media has been often accused in recent times of harbouring a partisan bias and the actions of Karan Thapar only serves to confirm that notion. The media is known to indule in creating an anti-BJP narrative. We at OpIndia.com have regularly called out lies spread by the mainstream media. The credibility of the MSM is at a critical low. Under such circumstances, it doesn’t bode well for the media that journalists who claim to be neutral are appealing to people to join the platform of a political party.

Chopper with PoK official breaches Indian air space, Army fires warning shots

0

A helicopter carrying a Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) official violated the Indian airspace after it entered J&K’s Poonch sector around noon on Sunday. According to the reports, the Indian Army troops soon fired towards the helicopter using small arms but the helicopter returned undamaged after about a minute.

According to Indian Express, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir’s Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider Khan claimed that he was present inside the helicopter at that time, along with PoK Tourism Minister Mushtaq Minhas, the PM’s personal security officer and the province’s Education Minister Ifthikar Gilani.

“We had no idea that we had breached (the airspace agreement), nor did we know that we were being fired at. When we landed at our destination, we learned that there was firing on our chopper from the Indian side,” Minhas said.

Reportedly, the PoK Prime Minister was travelling to a place called Samahni to condole the death of his brother Chaudhry Abdul Aziz. “It’s a seven-hour journey by road, so we decided that it would be best to go by helicopter,” said Minhas.

According to the existing rules between both the countries, helicopters are not allowed to enter each other’s airspace within a kilometre of the LoC and fixed-wing aircraft within 10 kilometres of the LoC. The civilian helicopter carrying PoK Prime Minister travelled over the Karmara area in the Sarla battalion sector around 12.13 pm and the Army reacted by firing using small arms.

Lt Colonel Devender Anand, spokesperson of the Defence Ministry said that the helicopter breached the agreement by 700m. “Army troops along the LoC fired at it using small arms. The chopper returned without any damage,” he said. He further added that it could be a civilian aircraft and the air sentries at the forward location engaged it with small arms.

This incident comes after the recent cancellation of proposed talks between India and Pakistan after India found out the details of Pakistan’s direct involvement in the killing of SPOs in Kashmir. Recently, Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs had also walked out of a SAARC meeting which was also attended by her Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi, mid-way, after issuing a strong call to end the ecosystem of terrorism.

As a Scot, I agree with VP Venkaiah Naidu. Every country should preserve its culture and heritage

I read with interest Vice President Venkaiah Naidu’s remarks addressing the fourth convocation of the National Institute of Technology Goa reported by Press Trust of India on September 29, 2018.

Some sections of the media had quoted Naidu as saying “English is an illness left behind by the British” during a Hindi Day event held in New Delhi early this month.

“Somewhere I was speaking about protecting and encouraging the mother tongue and some section of the media wrote that I said English is (an) illness, I did not say English is (an) illness. English is not (an) illness, but English mind is (an) illness which we have inherited from the Britishers,” he said.

“Britishers have left but they have created an inferiority complex. They have given the thought that Britishers are great, foreigners are great and we are nothing. We must come out of this mentality. We must feel proud of our heritage, our past and our great leaders of this country,” the Vice President added.

Naidu recalled that India never attacked any country, but it was “ruined” by invaders.

“They (invaders) ruled us, they ruined us. Not only they ruined us economically, but they ruined us mentally also. Some of the people are suffering from that disease,” he said. The Vice President insisted that Indians must get back to their roots.

In my opinion, as a ‘Britisher’, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu is absolutely right. There’s nothing I can do, as a British citizen about the colonial mindset to which Naidu refers, however, he says “Don’t forget culture. Don’t forget Indian philosophy.” And I couldn’t agree more.

Just look at the struggle we ‘Britishers’ have had to protect our own culture and language. In Scotland – our Parliament is supporting initiatives to preserve Gaelic and Scots languages. The Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 was passed as a first step to secure the status of the Gaelic language as an official language of Scotland with equal respect to the English language and to create a sustainable future for Gaelic in Scotland, against a background of declining numbers of those speaking Gaelic fluently. The Scottish Government’s Gaelic Language Plan came into operation in June 2010.

Scottish dialects are known collectively as the Scots language – ‘Doric’, ‘Lallans’ and ‘Scotch’ or by more local names across various dialect regions of Scotland. Various organisations promote the use of Scots in formal, informal and everyday use.

In Wales – there is real passion about the Welsh language which continues to thrive with nearly 20% of the population speaking Welsh. Various parliamentary acts (1993, 1998 and 2011) provide that English and Welsh’s languages have equal importance. ‘Cymraeg 2050’ a strategy announced by the Welsh Government in 2017, aims to increase the numbers speaking Welsh to 1 million by 2050.

In Ireland – there are long-standing initiatives to preserve and promote the Irish language. Údarás na Gaeltachta is the authority responsible to ensure that Irish remains the main communal language of the Gaeltacht (an Irish-language word for any primarily Irish-speaking region) and is passed on to future generations. Vast sums are being spent to protect and preserve our culture.

Naidu said “We have beautiful languages. We should always respect them. Try to converse within the family, society in the mother tongue.” That’s exactly what we ‘Britishers’ are trying to do in our homeland.

The example given by Naidu – “Let us give up the colonial minds. I have done some small-small changes in the Rajya Sabha. When any minister wanted to lay the paper on the table they used to say ‘I beg to table’. I said begging whom? I said we should say ‘I submit a paper or lay on the table’. ”Naidu is right – but this particular example simply demonstrates the use of archaic English in India, perpetuated by schools and authorities simply reprinting archaic English texts.

I remember talking to students in Mumbai, not so very long ago, and asking why certain phrases were still in common use.

The answer?

They all had been brought up on Wren & Martin’s book – High School English Grammar and Composition or collectively, a series of English grammar textbooks written jointly by P. C. Wren and H. Martin.

These were written primarily for the children of British officers residing in India, and were widely adopted by Indian and Pakistani schools in the post-colonial era. The books were published in 1935, with a discussion on composition added later.

The content in the books is largely based on The Manual of English Grammar and Composition by J. C. Nesfield. Published by the ‘Britisher’ Macmillan in 1908.

The Vice President said there is nothing wrong in learning English or any other foreign language.

“You can learn as many languages as you want. You can learn Portuguese, Chinese, Russian, there is nothing wrong. We should discuss and debate in our mother tongue.” The key, however, for Vice President Venkaiah Naidu is to accept that English has official or special status in more than 75 countries with a total population of over 2 billion.

By most common estimates, around 750 million people speak English as a foreign language. There are 6,000 languages in the world today, and half of the world’s population speaks only 10 of them. English is the single most dominant of these 10.

The British Council has gathered many of the statistics relating to English: English is the main language of books, newspapers, airports and air-traffic control, international business and academic conferences, science, technology, diplomacy, sport, international competitions, pop music and advertising.

Over two-thirds of the world’s scientists read in English. Three-quarters of the world’s mail is written in English. Eighty per cent of the world’s electronically stored information is in English. Of the estimated 200 million users of the Internet, some thirty-six per cent communicate in English. English is used as the lingua franca between nations where English is not the primary language. In a globalised world, the number of English learners around the world is only expected to grow further.

25% of the world’s population speak English to some level of competence; demand from 75% of the world’s population is increasing.

The ‘Britishers’ have not left. The British Council continues to do extraordinary work in India and offers a range of projects in arts, education, English language and society to audiences with Indian partners in cities all over India.

The educational publishing market in India is still dominated by British brands. Thankfully, Indian publishers are challenging the market in India with excellent English language material. If India can simply accept that English is important, and ‘get over’ the ‘Britisher’ attitude and embrace modern English – even American English, then the contribution that Indian people can make to the world on a truly global scale is absolutely unlimited – but not at the expense of India’s languages.

Naidu is right “We have beautiful languages. We should always respect them. Try to converse within the family and society in your mother tongue.”

I write this article from Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. We are book publishers, of many years standing, with alliances, friendships and associations with India going back for more than 30 years. From a British perspective, although I am Scottish, we are currently struggling, as a still United Kingdom, with the issues surrounding Brexit.

I, like the majority of Scots, am a ‘remainer’, but what we all must share and care about, and take pride in, is our culture and heritage.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu’s vision has to be the right way forward.

Bengal: Son thrashed and mother forced to drink urine for praising Modi in a Facebook post

In a shocking incident, a man and his mother were beaten up and the mother was forced to drink the urine of a miscreant in Bengal for the crime of being a mother to a son, who praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a post on Facebook.

Haribhakta Mondal, a home tutor by profession had posted his admiration of Narendra Modi on the social networking site which was accompanied by a picture of the incumbent Prime Minister, which made a few people angry. On Thursday, a group of more than thirty miscreants, who according to Haribhakta belonged to Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress party attacked his house in the Bosa Rameshwarbati area of Dhanekhali, Hooghly.

According to Haribhakta, six people entered his house while he was tutoring his pupils and asked him to come outside for a little chat, it was only after he left his house he discovered a mob of an additional twenty people waiting for him. The mob immediately began thrashing Haribhakta as Haribhakta struggled to understand why he was being thrashed.

The crowd was in frenzy and did not show any restraint. His parents who were present inside the house came to their son’s rescue but to no avail. Haribhakta’s father Ranjit Mondal and mother Sabita Mondal both were beaten by the mob and Ranjit suffered injuries to his foot. His mother also suffered the same fate and was beaten up by the miscreants.

It is what happened after the beating that has brought condemnation from all sections of the society. Sabita Mondal asked for water due to exhaustion from the beating she received. Instead of giving her water, the miscreants urinated on her and forced her to drink that urine.

The local leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party informed the police and the entire family was rescued and then admitted to Dhanekhali Hospital. They were later shifted to Imambara Sardar Hospital in Chinsura.

The Chairman of the BJP’s OBC Morcha, Swapan Pal termed the incident ‘Barbaric and medieval’ and expressed disgust and anger at the level of indecency and amorality in the TMC party which let the party stoop to this nadir of political principles in a democracy.  The BJP has also accused the incumbent Member of Legislative Assembly from TMC, Asima Patra of trying to hush the incident by pressurizing the family.

Pehlu Khan case: Police finds no evidence of firing on Pehlu Khan’s sons and witnesses

0

Two days after it was reported that Pehlu Khan’s sons and witnesses, who were on their way to testify in the Pehlu Khan lynching case in April last year, were shot at by unknown assailants, Alwar Police has said that they have found no evidence of firing on them. According to reports, Pehlu Khan’s sons and witnesses and lawyer were on their way to a court in Behror to depose in the lynching case when a black SUV without number plates had allegedly stopped them and opened fire at them when they refused to stop.

However, the police investigating the case have found no evidence in the claims. As reported by Patrika, the police examined the place at which the lawyer and witnesses claim the firing took place and obtained CCTV footage from a nearby hotel. At 9:04 am, the car in which witnesses were going can be seen passing by but half an hour before and after that no black SUV can be seen in the video. Further, the FSL report states that the place at which they claim their car pressed the brakes, no evidence of braking the car could be found there. Moreover, the driver of the car, Pehlu Khan’s sons, the driver and the witness were independently questioned and their statements video-recorded and all versions reportedly differ. Over and above, no one else could independently corroborate that the firing took place.

As reported by Bhaskar, Police believes that they claimed the firing took place to get the case transferred to either Tijara or Alwar and hence they may have made up the story. As per Rajendra Singh, Alwar SP, the police has examined the points mentioned by the witnesses and no concrete evidence of firing having taken place could be found. The CCTV cameras installed on the highway were also examined but no black SUV which reportedly fired at them could be seen.

Enforcement Directorate attaches Nirav Modi’s foreign assets worth 637 crores

0

In a massive crackdown, the Enforcement Directorate has attached multiple overseas assets of Nirav Modi. According to reports, real estate properties in New York City and London have been attached and jewellery worth Rs 22.69 crores has been brought back to India from Hong Kong. The ED has also reportedly seized foreign bank accounts of the absconding Diamond tycoon. The total worth of the immovable assets, jewellery and bank accounts are reported to be around Rs 637 crores.

According to a report in the Republic world, the London apartment where Nirav Modi was traced to by their reporter a few weeks earlier has also been seized by the ED. According to the report, diamond jewellery with a declared value of Rs 85 crores was taken from India after the CBI began an investigation in the PNB scam. The jewellery had been kept in the vault of a private company on Nirav Modi’s behalf. After contacting the London headquarters of the company and extensive paperwork, the ED has finally managed to bring back the jewellery to India in 23 different shipments.

A flat in south Mumbai belonging to Nirav Modi’s sister Purvi has also been attached. The ED has reportedly attached an account in Singapore belonging to Purvi Modi worth Rs 44 crores. 5 other bank accounts belonging to Nirav Modi with an approximate total value of Rs 278 crores have been attached too.

Earlier, it was reported that just before the PNB scam was brought to light, Nirav Modi had transferred the ownership of his property at Essex House, 160 central par south to the Ithaca Trust, a trust that has Nirav Modi, his wife and children as beneficiaries. An inquiry ordered by a court in New York after three American companies owned by Nirav Modi filed for bankruptcy had found that in September 2017, the Ithaca Trust had bought another property at Ritz Carlton, 50, central park south for approximately by paying USD 25 million in cash. The authorities in the USA had suspected that the money for the purchase was money laundered from the PNB scam. Both the properties have been reportedly attached by the ED.

It is notable here that back in February, the ED had approached a special PMLA court for permission to attach Nirav Modi’s overseas properties under section 5 of the PMLA in USA, UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa and UAE. On February 26, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs had filed a petition in the USA court against the bankruptcy proceedings filed by 3 American firms controlled by Nirav Modi. In July, the court in New York City had ruled for PNB to have a claim on the assets of Nirav Modi in their country.

The ED and CBI have been in a relentless pursuit of Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi after the 13,000 crore PNB scam was unearthed. Interpol has issued red corner notices for Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Purvi Modi and Nishal Modi, Nirav’s sister and brother respectively.

In India too, the ED has already attached several of Nirav Modi’s properties and bank accounts worth thousands of crores.
