Ghoul: Watch (or don’t) as Anurag Kashyap unloads unhindered propaganda on the audience

“…I am willing to go out on a limb to assert that the second season (of the Sacred Games), scheduled to coincide with the 2019 elections, will be aimed at the end-game of showing the ruling dispensation in a negative light…”

For someone resuming writing after a hiatus, predicting the story arcs to be crafted by one of India’s most skilful bunch of film-makers was a bold little assertion made on this very portal earlier this month. Thankfully, Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, et al. didn’t make this writer wait an entire year to feel vindicated and returned to spew their toxic leftist propaganda within a month. Only this time, any pretence of a primary plot to ship the propaganda with appears to be gone.

At the outset, I would begin by clarifying that horror is not my cup of tea. Pennywise the clown, who was beaten (literally) by a bunch of fumbling kids, haunted my nights for weeks after I watched IT, and a friend has had to pester me for days to agree to watch Annabelle: Creation. (Seeing demonic spirits fleeing from Christian symbols in the latter though, does beg the question as to what were people doing to get rid of evil for centuries before Christianity usurped native religions). So, while I cannot claim to be an authority when it comes to the genre, but I can vouch for myself as being one of the easier guys to scare-off and Netflix’s Ghoul fails miserably at it!

While we are not told what year are the events of the show are unfolding in, but ‘fascist’ India in the series is shown stuck with Maruti Esteems and landline phones in an alternate reality where intellectuals and free thinkers are being hounded for their espousal of country’s secularism by a totalitarian regime. A poorly made off-shoot of Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.

The constitution and the idea of India are in danger as Muslims are selectively rounded up and lodged in high-security prisons, and extra-judicial killings are rampant. A few Christians who toe the line of a majoritarian government though are surprisingly rewarded with high-ranking postings.

The show even uses the oft-derided phrase “wapsi” to refer to Muslims that have been tortured into re-orienting their allegiance to the state. Now, where else have the viewers read stories of such dooms-day scenarios before? Answer: In every other leftist rag that carries the rants of “intellectuals”, that the show fondly refers to, who claim they are being hounded for something as justifiable as stopping them from leeching public wealth.

What is appreciable though, is the series’ mention of themes — Aramaic Language and the Goan Inquisitions — that would never find even a fleeting mention on Indian television. One just wishes the show makers had the courage to tell the viewers how the language they pertain to was erased to extinction during the bloody and deceitful subjugation of its speakers by the community shown as persecuted in the show. Or how it is the supposed villains of the series, the Hindus, who have historically been persecuted in episodes such as the Goan Inquisitions.

The writers of the show seem well aware of the history (which is one of the only two saving graces of the show) but the brief and motivated references to history, otherwise aptly used by the writers to lend some credence to the original story, is what this writer takes exception with.

Coming back to Netflix’s Ghoul — this utterly underwhelming three-episode series, which I learnt to my surprise, took three years to make, is helmed by a greenhorn director with nothing of note to his credit previously. The trailers of the show, though, bandy about the name of the production house of Jason Blum (“the makers of Insidious and Get Out”), but since Blum’s company has produced more than ten films and TV series in 2018 alone, one can imagine the level of his involvement in a project that tries to piggyback on his reputation.

While it cannot be anyone’s case that a debutante director cannot make a good show, using Blum’s name to sell the show does smack of dishonesty. It also turns out that it was fairly recently that Netflix came on board and turned the intended feature film into a web-series, according to the makers’ “creative freedom” from the censors. Despite the association of the two deep-pocketed production houses with unrivalled experience and expertise, the make-up, the prison setup, the props and the uniforms leave a lot to be desired.

One can’t help but sympathise with the amateur British director’s failing attempts using eerie background music (the second saving grace of the show) and resorting to patchy lighting, shaky camerawork and jump-scares in the make-believe Indian Guantanamo Bay like setup (in a country which famously released the largest number of PoWs in history, almost entirely Muslims, honourably) to add some horror to the mix.

He is also let down by his dialogue writers and Indian assistants who should have been tasked with making the alternate dystopian reality narrative, believable. The aforementioned Esteems and telephones preclude the timeline from being a dystopian future to more of an alternate reality set in the 90s. The writers would have done well to give us a background on how India ends up in that fascist reality, if only they weren’t already deluded into believing that we are already living in it. A half-decent origin story is least one can expect from a show that has been three years in the making.

Sacred Games, for all its discussed flaws, was a well-made show and an engaging watch. The social media was abuzz with praises for performances of its lead actors. For Ghoul though, I have already seen a number of tweets calling out the comically exaggerated and ill-placed leftist references. We have already lamented losing creative talent to the communist echo-chamber that Bollywood has become, but after watching Netflix’s Ghoul I can cheer this bunch on as they continue to peddle propaganda and lose the love they earned laboriously into an oblivious obscurity.

NASA confirms: Delayed opening of dams coupled with rains led to Kerala floods

0

According to a report by NASA, delay in releasing water from several full dams, instead of gradually releasing the same during drier times, coupled with abnormally heavy monsoon lead to the worst flooding in the state since 1924. The report shows that the rainfall peaked in Kerala on 20th July and reached abnormally high levels between 8th to 16th August. While the region had received 42 per cent more rainfall since the beginning of June for this time period, the region experienced 164 per cent more rain than normal in the first 20 days of August.

The report says that authorities opened 80 dams in the region at one go, including the Idukki dam, one of the largest arch dams in Asia. Of these 80 dams, 35 were opened for the first time. According to Sujay Kumar, a research scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre, the dam releases came in way too late which coincided with the ongoing heavy rainfall, thereby worsening the situation.

The images released by NASA show a comparative effect of the devastating floods in Kerala.

The dark blue part in the image is flood water.

We had reported earlier how Kerala Floods might be a man-made disaster considering reports like the Gadgil report were ignored and the dam water was released later than it should have been without adequate planning. The Gadgil report was also opposed by the Church tooth and nail. The Congress government at the time had reportedly given into the pressure.

Aam Aadmi Party’s ‘Model Schools’ develop infrastructure problems, 250 crores wasted: Reports

0

As per an Indian Express report, Rs. 250 crores have gone down the drain as the Aam Aadmi Party’s ‘Model Schools’ project has developed infrastructural problems. AAP had sought to convert 54 government schools into model schools and had handed the job of beatification of these schools to Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC).

Merely 3 years later, the walls have developed cracks in some of the recently completed schools. The issue was brought to notice at a meeting of the coordination committee chaired by the Directorate of Education (DoE) on the 16th of August wherein the heads of the schools were asked to submit details of the “deficiency work”.

According to the minutes of the meeting as stated in the report, “The 13 District Deputy Director Education (DDEs) have informed that there are numerous deficiencies in civil/electrical/plumbing/renovation work done by DTTDC in 54 pilot schools. In fact, big cracks have started appearing in some recently completed schools.”

The report also quoted a Principal, who preferred to remain anonymous, as saying, “They took such a long time to build the schools… after they handed over the building to us, water started seeping in and cracks developed within months. The matter should be inquired by the government.”

Apart from the DTTDC, the PWD has also been pulled up over its shoddy work. “In almost all the schools visited, the quality of whitewash done by the PWD is found to be below standard. In many rooms, whitewash has not been done at all, and very cheap material (chuna) has been used to paint the exteriors,” stated the minutes of the meeting.

In 2015, 54 schools were selected to be developed into ‘Model Schools’ and Rs. 250 crores were allocated for the same. The DTTDC was charged with the charged with the responsibility of renovation of the schools while the PWD was to modify the school infrastructure.

Pope of ‘Mafia like Church’ must resign, knew of sexual abuse allegations and did nothing : Archbishop

0

Former papal nuncio (ambassador) to the United States, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, has unleashed a new controversy on the Vatican as he claimed in an open letter that Pope Francis was aware of the sexual abuse allegations against Cardinal Theodore McCarrick and his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI’s sanctions against him, and yet did nothing to punish but went to elevate him to a position where he was helping choose powerful American Bishops. Vigano has also called for the resignation of the Pope.

Benedict had been made aware of McCarrick’s transgressions as well, the letter claims but failed to act immediately. It was only after years of delay that sanctions were issued against him. McCarrick was revealed to have abused generation of seminarians and young priests and is accused of abusing at least two minors. He was removed from active ministry in June and faces an ecclesiastical trial. He has been ordered by the Vatican to remain in penitential seclusion until that time.

The letter by Vigano, translated by Lifesite News to English, begins with the ominous declaration, “Bishops and priests, abusing their authority, have committed horrendous crimes to the detriment of their faithful, minors, innocent victims, and young men eager to offer their lives to the Church, or by their silence have not prevented that such crimes continue to be perpetrated.”

Calling for Pope Francis’s resignation, Vigano wrote in the letter, “A chorus of voices is rising especially from the lay faithful and has recently been joined by several bishops and priests, asking that all those who, by their silence, covered up McCarrick’s criminal behavior, or who used him to advance their career or promote their intentions, ambitions and power in the Church, should resign.”

The letter also compares the Catholic Church to a mafia, a mafia that has been preying on innocent children for decades. “To restore the beauty of holiness to the face of the Bride of Christ, which is terribly disfigured by so many abominable crimes, and if we truly want to free the Church from the fetid swamp into which she has fallen, we must have the courage to tear down the culture of secrecy and publicly confess the truths we have kept hidden. We must tear down the conspiracy of silence with which bishops and priests have protected themselves at the expense of their faithful, a conspiracy of silence that in the eyes of the world risks making the Church look like a sect, a conspiracy of silence not so dissimilar from the one that prevails in the mafia.”

The letter also claims that a huge scandal is about to surface in Honduras. “In Honduras, a scandal as huge as the one in Chile is about to be repeated. The Pope defends his man, Cardinal Rodriguez Maradiaga, to the bitter end, as he had done in Chile with Bishop Juan de la Cruz Barros, whom he himself had appointed Bishop of Osorno against the advice of the Chilean Bishops. First, he insulted the abuse victims. Then, only when he was forced by the media, and a revolt by the Chilean victims and faithful, did he recognize his error and apologize while stating that he had been misinformed, causing a disastrous situation for the Church in Chile, but continuing to protect the two Chilean Cardinals Errazuriz and Ezzati.”

The claims in the open letter are, however, unsubstantiated and certain people have claimed that Vigano’s claims in the letter are a consequence of an internal power struggle in the Church. Michael Sean Winters, who writes for the National Catholic Reporter, said, “Vigano is a disgruntled former employee. But, make no mistake: This is a coordinated attack on Pope Francis. A putsch is afoot and if the U.S. bishops do not, as a body, stand up to defend the Holy Father in the next 24 hours, we shall be slipping towards schism…. The enemies of Francis have declared war.”

The timing of the letter cannot be ignored as well. The letter was published when Pope Francis is on a tour of Ireland where has made several apologies regarding the clerical sexual abuse in the once staunchly Catholic country. He stated during one of his speeches, “I beg the Lord’s forgiveness for these sins and for the scandal and betrayal felt by so many others in God’s family.” The claims made by Vigano, which the Pope has refused to comment on, will have a profound impact on the Pope’s credibility and will only serve to further the mistrust of the institution in the minds of the people.

Vigano was removed from the position of nuncio to the United States in 2016. He belongs to a more conservative faction within the Church which has profound differences with the Pope regarding the direction the Church should take. Vigano belongs to the section of priests who blame homosexuality for the menace of child sex abuse the Church is faced with. “The seriousness of homosexual behaviour must be denounced. The homosexual networks present in the Church must be eradicated,” claims the letter. The letter also accuses high ranking officials of deliberating promoting homosexuals to positions of power.

Apart from the Pope, Vigano has accused Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Bishop Paul Bootkoski, Cardinal Kevil Farrell, Cardinal Sean O’Malley and a host of other high-ranking officials of being involved in an elaborate cover-up of the crimes committed by McCarrick. It is disgusting to imagine that high ranking officials within the Church are willing to use sexual abuse and predatory behaviour by priests as weapons in an internal power struggle within the Church but considering the moral depravity the Church has sunk to, it remains a distinct possibility.

CBI writes to Antiguan Government seeking arrest of PNB scam accused, Mehul Choksi

0

Days after the Indian Government submitted the extradition request for Mehul Choksi to the Antigua & Barbuda foreign ministry, the CBI, probing the case, in a letter sent to the Antiguan Government through the Ministry of External Affairs(MEA), asked the government to arrest Mehul Choksi, the accused in the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) case.

The CBI, who had earlier requested the Interpol to issue a Red Corner Notice (RCN) for Choksi when it was trying to ascertain his whereabouts, today asserted that any such notice was not necessary as its a custodial matter with the location of the accused already verified by authorities. The agency further urged that since the location and new citizenship of Choksi are now known, the procedure of his arrest and thereafter extradition should be initiated.

CBI’s letter chooses to mention the red corner notice, specifically because the Antigua government had previously questioned why one had not been issued. Sources in the government also previously hinted that the Antiguan government there was unwilling to act because it does not have a formal treaty with India which would compel them to send Choksi back.

Choksi, the owner of Gitanjali Gems, who reportedly had a ‘loose alliance’ with the Congress, and who had used mob lynching as an excuse to not come back to India after the CBI issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against him and his nephew Nirav Modi, claimed of taking Antiguan citizenship last year to expand his business. As per a report, a statement made by Choksi appeared in an Antigua newspaper where he claimed that he has become the country’s citizen via its investment program. In the statement, Choksi claimed that he took this decision to expand his business in the Caribbean and take advantage visa-free travel for 132 countries.

Though the Congress party has been using this as an opportunity to play politics by accusing the government of assisting Nirav Modi (even though the Nirav Modi scam has landed squarely on the Congress’ doorstep as the 20:80 Gold Scheme sanctioned by P Chidambaram had benefitted 13 companies including Mehul Choksi’s firm), the BJP government along with the CBI undeterred by these accusations are tightening all its efforts to bring the multi-crore scammer back to the country, who had defrauded the Punjab National Bank of about $2.2 billion by raising credit from overseas branches of other Indian banks using illegal guarantees issued by rogue PNB staff at a Mumbai branch over several years.

Clashes erupt in Kashmir after rumours emerge that Article 35A has been scrapped

0

Clashes erupted in Kashmir on Monday after rumours emerged that Article 35A has been scrapped by the Supreme Court. Article 35A of the Indian Constitution empowers the state government of Jammu and Kashmir to define ‘permanent residents’ of the state and provide them with special rights and privileges accordingly.

Authorities have also imposed a shutdown in Srinagar and some parts of the Kashmir valley, the Police confirmed. The state police have issued a statement saying, “Some sections of the media have circulated news regarding scrapping of the Article 35A. The news has been refuted as baseless. People are requested to maintain calm and not to pay heed to these rumours.”

“Spontaneous shutdown is being observed in many places in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, and Anantnag district in south Kashmir,” Economic Times quoted a police official as saying. “Shops and other business establishments, which had opened this morning, downed shutters after rumours of Article 35A being scrapped spread like wildfire and were circulated on social media,” the official said.

Clashes between stone pelters and security forces were reported in Anantnag and several other districts. Authorities were also forced to decrease the speed of the internet in the Valley. The separatists have called for a general shutdown on Friday and Saturday to demonstrate the public support for the Article.

The Supreme Court is set to hear a fresh petition regarding the scrapping of Article 35A which triggered the rumours.

No Indian Express, don’t use innocent Muslims to whitewash the sins of the ones who join ISIS

0

The Indian Express today published an article titled ‘Kerala floods: Village battling Islamic State tag is part of relief team’. The article talks about how youth from Padanna in Kerala have been working on the ground in flood-hit areas, ferrying supplies. The reason this village is talked about is that the village has earned the monicker ‘ISIS recruitment hub’ after the intelligence officials have busted ISIS network in Kerala multiple times in recent years.

Indian Express headline

Muslims make up 27 per cent of Kerala’s population. Padanna first came to light in May 2016 after over 25 people from Kerala fled to Afghanistan to join the ISIS. Most of those who have joined the ranks in the ISIS are reportedly educated professionals hailing from middle class or upper-middle-class families, thereby the argument that lack of education and poverty is driving the youth to extremism falls flat.

The Indian Express article describes in great detail how nearly 100 youngsters from Padanna, which is a Muslim-majority village, are playing a major role in helping Kerala recover from the floods. The report says that the youth have trimmed their beard and are avoiding ‘obvious symbols’ to avoid ‘unwanted attention’. The author names many Muslims from Padanna who are helping Kerala out in this hour of need. While the relief and rescue efforts are indeed commendable, it still can’t obfuscate the fact that many Muslim youths from that village are joining ISIS.

The good deeds of these many men do not take away the fact that there is a law and order situation in Kerala that needs to be addressed. We have earlier written about the silence around the fact that ISIS is taking roots in India, especially Kerala.

In 2014, the security agencies arrested 6 people for pro-ISIS sentiments and engaging in behaviour supportive of the Jihadist terror group. In 2015, that number rose to 19. Again in 2016, the numbers saw a rise and 54 people were arrested for pro-ISIS sentiments. In 2017, however, the number came down to 34.

However, these are just numbers of those arrested. The actual number of those who have joined the terror group is pegged to be much higher. As many as 88 Indians, the majority being from Kerala are believed to have joined ISIS. Shockingly, the political parties seem either in denial or are hesitant to effectively deal with extremist groups.

ISIS has been trying to gain a foothold in India in last few years, with reports emerging of the blueprint of turning Kashmir into an Islamic Caliphate. ISIS sympathizers and terrorists have been arrested from Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh as well.

When Indian Express uses the goodwill of law-abiding Muslim youths to whitewash the sins of the ones who have joined ISIS, or to obfuscate a national security issue of a village turning into an ISIS recruitment hub, it does no favours to the nation as well as the many Muslim youths who have nothing to do with ISIS and perhaps detest the phenomenon of Islamic extremism as much as the next person. In an attempt to apologise for Islamic extremism and soften the blow of the glaring national security issue of ISIS looming large, Indian Express does a massive disservice to those Muslims who, inadvertently, are being painted with the same brush as those who join the ranks of terrorists.

One wonders why Indian Media, which is an extension of Indian “liberals” choose to whitewash terrorism and fundamentalism in order to project themselves as the messiahs of Indian Muslims. We have seen how self-proclaimed “liberals” often turn out to be terror sympathisers, and hence, it is only natural that media would follow suit. However, it is always an astounding low when law-abiding Muslims are used for their terror apology.

Writing about horror stories of Muslim youths joining the ranks of ISIS with a human touch of innocent Muslims helping flood victims only helps to obfuscate a real issue, a serious one, that stares the nation and threatens to destabilise the country.

While it is indeed unfair to paint the entire community as terrorists just because of deeds of a few, it is also equally unfair to use the innocent Muslims as a plank to whitewash the sins of those who join the ISIS.

SpiceJet successfully tests India’s first bio-fuel operated flight from Dehradun

0

India now joins the list of few elite nations to operate an aircraft using alternative energy sources like biofuel as the low-cost carrier SpiceJet successfully flies a demonstration flight on biofuel from Dehradun to Delhi. The airline conducted a trial run using Bombardier Q400 (VT-SUI) turboprop aircraft at Dehradun.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat flaged off the SpiceJet Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircraft from Dehradun’s Jolly Grant airport.

The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research and Dehradun-based Indian Institute of Petroleum has developed the fuel used in this project. This fuel is prepared using vegetable oils, sugar, animal fats and waste biomass, which can be used in existing engines without modification. The made-in-India alternative fuel has acquired all statutory clearances, including those from designated testing labs and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The low cost airlines are looking to cut their operating costs, especially their aviation fuel bill and are switching to alternate fuels like biofuel could bring costs down which in turn could boost the aviation sector in the country. The transportation sector’s decision to test the feasibility of the usage of cleaner fuels is commendable, as it could bring greater efficiency with less pollution.

With this feat, India joins the league of elite countries, which include Canada, Australia and United States to operate commercial airways on bio fuel.

Dilute Ram, preserve Nehru: How Congress’ position on Teen Murti exposes the party’s idea of heritage

Teen Murti Bhavan, a sprawling property of 30 acres where the first prime minister of independent India lived, worked and died. The luxurious and, might I add, gorgeous property has served as a memorial for Jawaharlal Nehru. This Thursday, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library society decided to construct a new museum inside the Teen Murti Bhavan in honour of other PMs – both former, as well as future ones, a proposal that was floated in December 2017 by the Modi, led central government.

As the decision surfaced, the loyal foot soldiers of the dynasty were, expectedly, up in arms. Former prime minister Manmohan Singh wrote a ‘scathing’ letter to PM Modi, urging him to leave the Teen Murti Bhavan untouched. He accused the government of harbouring an ‘agenda’ to ‘change the nature and character’ of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) and the Teen Murti complex. Manmohan Singh also writes that Jawaharlal Nehru doesn’t belong just to the Congress, but to the entire nation.

“Let us respect this sentiment and keep Teen Murti as a memorial to our first Prime Minister Pandit Nehru and leave the Teen Murti complex undisturbed as it is. This way we will be respecting both history and heritage”, he said.

It is said that when History is erased, people’s moral values are also erased. It is also said that it is good to be proud of one’s heritage, but that pride shouldn’t be perverted. Congress seems to have perverted their pride in the Dynasty’s heritage to erase portions of history that don’t include them, thereby, attempting to corrupt the moral values of a society.

India’s history encompasses all its leaders, past, present, future. The good, bad and the ugly. If the Congress is so concerned about the Country’s heritage and history, one has got to wonder why it would have a problem, or why it would think that history is being undermined by the inclusion of all others who are inextricable parts of it.

Their reverence, or the lack of it, for other leaders of India is not unknown. The shameful treatment met out to former Prime Minister and Congress President PV Narasimha Rao.

How Congress treats leaders who don’t belong to the Nehru clan can be understood by just these 2 lines from the book, Half Lion. Two lines that epitomise how former PM Rao was humiliated in death.

“When the dignitaries left a couple of hours later, the body was still burning. That night, (local) television channels showed visuals of the half-burnt body, skull still visible, lying abandoned. Stray dogs were pulling at the funeral pyre”. (Half Lion, Location 119).

History means nothing to Congress. Heritage means nothing to Congress. One then recalls how Congress stood up tall in court to assert that Lord Ram was a mere fictional character and that the Ram Setu must be demolished. In 2007, the government in an affidavit to the Supreme Court in the Sethusamudram project case had not only dismissed the existence of any man-made bridge between India and Sri Lanka but even questioned the existence of the characters of Ramayana.

For the Congress, PV Narasimha Rao wasn’t a part of history. For the Congress, Ram Setu isn’t a part of Heritage. For the Congress, history starts and ends with the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, and heritage starts and ends with the monuments that glorify only the dynasty. Why else would they let Rao’s body be pulled and tugged by stray dogs? Why else would they want to allow the Ram Setu to be torn apart? Why else would they not even commemorate the Kargil war, terming it the BJP’s war? Why else would they actively work towards the Ram temple at Ayodhya never being built?

Why else would they think history and heritage are being undermined if the memory of prime ministers other than Jawaharlal Nehru get the place they deserve?

Quod Erat Demonstrandum: For Congress, history starts and ends with Nehru. Heritage starts and ends with structures that glorify him, and his lineage.

P Chidambaram’s claims fall flat as CBI accuses him of ‘wilfully ignoring rules’ in Aircel-Maxis case

0

The scam-ridden, former Finance Minister, P Chidambaram, who has been in news for his unlawful involvement in the Aircel-Maxis case for quite some time now, and has been for all this while making false affirmations defending himself, has been denounced as a ‘willful lawbreaker’ in the charge sheet filed by the CBI last month.

Coming as a hard blow to the Congress, the charge sheet claimed that Chidambaram did not grant FDI approvals “mechanically” but there was “due application of mind” in “deliberately ignoring prevailing guidelines” while deciding the Aircel-Maxis case to avoid sending it to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.

It further revealed that several Congress leaders and the then Finance Ministry officials, including then under secretaries Ram Sharan and Dipak Kumar Singh, former FIPB additional secretary Ashok Chawla, the former joint secretary Sanjay Krishna, and the economic affairs secretary Ashok Jha, had conspired with Chidambaram, who was the Finance Minister from May 2004 to December 2008.

The Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate have been investigating the foreign investment clearance granted in 2006 for the Aircel-Maxis deal when Chidambaram was the Finance Minister in the Congress-led UPA government at the centre.

According to the CBI, Mauritius-based Global Communication Services Holdings – a subsidiary of Maxis – sought approval for an investment of 800 million dollars in telecom carrier Aircel. The approval was expected to come from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs or CCEA, headed by the Prime Minister. But it came from the then finance ministry, which only has the power to approve investments of smaller sums, up to Rs. 600 crore.

The agency alleged that the FIPB officials and P Chidambaram ‘deliberately suppressed’ the total investment figure and ‘maliciously projected’ the proposal of investment at Rs. 180 crores only by taking the value ‘at par’, which was done to bring the value within the competence level of Chidambaram, and furthered that after the approval was received, Aircel Televentures Limited paid a sum of 26 lakh to a company linked to Karti Chidambaram.

The CBI charged that the Congressman “dishonestly” didn’t raise any objections when the proposal was put up to him mentioning the ‘par value’ of the investment, despite knowing that, that was the only proposal where the phrase ‘par value’ was used.

This year has not started well for the Chidambaram’s, with the father-son duo landing themselves in a catch-22 situation, and crises not seeming to seize for them and their family members. In the month of May, the Income Tax Department had filed four prosecution complaints against Karti Chidambaram, his mother Nalini and wife Srinidhi in a Chennai court. According to reports, the cases were filed under the Black Money Act.

The Chennai and Delhi homes of former Union minister P Chidambaram were raided by a team of Enforcement Directorate earlier this year in connection with the money laundering investigation in the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case.

Interestingly, with the departments, probing the Aircel-Maxis case, including P Chidambaram in the list of accused, it so seems that the father-son duo is giving tough competition to each other with Karti already facing probe and currently on bail in the INX Media case and also under probe in the Aircel-Maxis case.
