Rohith Vemula frustrated with worldly affairs, did not commit suicide over University action: inquiry commission

0

Justice Ashok Kumar Roopanwal (retired), who inquired into the events at University of Hyderabad that led to suicide of student Rohith Vemula, has furnished the report [pdf] which has been tabled on both the houses of Parliament.

Justice Roopanwal says that in his view, “the suicide did not relate to any activities of the university administration or the above political leaders including the vice chancellor, Prof. Appa Rao Podile. It was wholly a decision of his own. His suicide note is on the record which shows that Rohith Vemula had his own problems and was not happy with worldly affairs. He was feeling frustrated for reasons best known to him.”

The report, which was made public on Tuesday, further states that, “He wrote that there was no urgency for understanding love, pain life and death but he was rushing after them. It indicates he was not happy with the activities going around him. He also wrote that he was all alone from the childhood and was an unappreciated man. This also indicates his frustration.”

The report says that his suicide note does not indicate his anger towards the University action. The punishment was awarded to Rohith and other students for leading a group of 30 persons to another student, one Susheel Kumar, and hitting and abusing him on the intervening night of 3rd-4th August, 2015. The final report was submitted by the Proctorial Board on 31st August, 2015. The decisions of the Proctorial Board was, “Complete suspension of Mr. Dontha Prashant, Mr. Rohith Vemula, Mr. P. Vijay and Mr. Seshu Chemudugunta from the classes or courses, hostels and other relevant/connected things a student gets from university, with immediate effect for the ongoing/current semester on account of leading a group of 30 persons to Susheel Kumar’s room, abusing and hitting him.” The decision was approved by the Executive Council of the University of Hyderabad.

The findings of the commission is in line with a sane reading of the suicide note Rohith Vemula had left. However, instead of reading the note and realising how identity politics disturbed the mind of student who wanted to be a scientist, the leftists used the same suicide not to further their political agenda.

Tragically, his suicide was politicised by the same leftist students outfits, against whom Vemula had expressed his disillusionment. In his suicide note, he wrote the following lines, which were struck off presumably by him:

“ASA, SFI, anything and everything exist for their own sake. Seldom the interest of a person and this organisation match. To get power, to become famous or to be important in between boundaries and to think we are up to changing the system. Very often we overestimate the acts and find solace in traits.”

The report also said that nothing has been brought to Justice Roopanwal’s notice “which it could be shown that he was ever given a different treatment from that of the general category students by the university authorities during his stay in the university.” Hence the claims that he was harassed or ill treated by university because of his caste also seem baseless.

He further states that in his opinion, the view taken by the Executive Council of the University was most reasonable in the circumstances prevailing at that time.

“The Executive Council mainly focussed that the students should keep concentration on their academic career and not to the other things. The leniency shown by the Executive Council itself shows that the university administration was not functioning under any influence or pressure otherwise there could be no occasion to be lenient or to reduce the punishment recommended by the Proctorial Board,” justice Roopanwal added.

See the ‘Missing’ Sonia and Rahul posters which were pasted in Rae Bareli and Amethi

Rae Bareli and Amethi in Uttar Pradesh which are the Parliamentary constituencies of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi don’t seem to be very happy with their MPs.

Last week it was reported that Rahul Gandhi missing posters had surfaced in Amethi. According to the report, Rahul had visited his constituency about 6 months back, after which he apparently hasn’t been seen again. Here is the poster in question:

As seen above, the poster contains a picture of Rahul Gandhi with “Missing” written in the caption 3 times and has been signed as “citizens of Amethi”.

The poster says that “Amethi’s honourable MP Sri Rahul Gandhi is missing from the constituency because of which the developmental works there are halted. Due to this behaviour the common man is feeling betrayed and insulted. If someone informs about his whereabouts in Amethi, they would be given an appropriate reward”.

Now some people of Rae Bareli too seem to taken a cue from their Amethi counterparts and have come up with a Sonia Missing poster as Sonia Gandhi hasn’t supposedly visited her constituency this year:

This poster too was modelled on the lines of the Rahul Gandhi one and promised a reward to whoever notified the people of Rae Bareli about the whereabouts of Sonia Gandhi. Dozens of these posters were reportedly pasted in Gora Bazaar, Mahanandpur and the Government Colony of Rae Bareli. They though were ripped apart soon after their presence was detected.

The local Congress leaders have blamed the “saffron camp” for these posters and have alleged it be a campaign of the RSS and the BJP.

Incidentally this isn’t the only time, the leaders have been subjected to such posters.

In 2015 various “Rahul Gandhi Missing” posters had surfaced in Uttar Pradesh with messages like, “Amethi Without a Leader”.

One poster which had surfaced in Amethi had taken a dig on RaGa’s foreign trips with the message, Jane woh kaun sa desh jahan tum chale gaye, na chitthi na sandesh, kahan tum chale gaye (Which country have you gone to, that there’s no letter or message from you):

The BJP too had openly carried one such poster where a certain BJP leader had asked for the location of Congress Commander Rahul Gandhi:

From backing women’s fight against Triple Talaq to never being soft on terrorism: PM Modi’s I-Day speech

As the nation awoke to the 71st year of its Independence, people tuned in to listen to the address of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the historic Red Fort in Delhi. In his 57 minute speech which began at about 7:30 AM in the morning, the Prime Minister touched on a wide variety subjects, some of which grabbed more attention than others.

He began his speech by remembering all those Indians who had sacrificed and suffered hardships. He expressed grief about the ongoing floods in Gujarat, Assam and also condoling the deaths of the children in the Gorakhpur tragedy. He also urged the Indians to change their outlook and rid themselves of the chalta hai attitude.

Then things started to get a bit interesting. Modi decided to take a soft approach to Kashmir by stating that Gaali and goli will not bring about change in J&K and claimed that change would come after embracing every Kashmiri. He though in the same breath reiterated that there was no question of going soft on terrorism. This soft stance incidentally was very similar to the one Rajnath Singh adopted in the aftermath of the attack of Amarnath Yatra due to which he was heavily criticised.

Modi also brought in the subject of black money, corruption and reiterated that his government was committed towards eliminating them. He also painted demonetisation as a success by claiming that they had uncovered over Rs 2 lakh in black money post it and cancelled the registration of about 1.75 lakh companies.

He also possibly ruffled a few politically correct feathers by bringing in the issue of Triple Talaq in his speech. He hailed the women who were fighting the draconian practice and stated that the whole nation was with them in their fight to get their rights. This was his statement:

I pay my regards to the women who had to lead a pitiable life due to ‘triple talaq’ and have started a movement which has created an environment in the entire country against the practice

Incidentally he didn’t elaborate over whether his government would bring in a law to outlaw the practice or move towards the much publicised Uniform Civil Code.

In his speech he denounced violence in the name of faith and also urged 1.25 crore Indians to work for a new India bereft of terrorism, castiesm and regionalism. He also pitched various schemes his government has been working on. He concluded his speech with passionate chants of Vande Mataram, Jai Hind and Bharat Mata Ki Jai.

Overall Modi looked like maintaining a balanced tone to covered all aspects of the Indian society. It remains to be seen as to what tone he takes next year, which will be his last Independence Day speech before the 2019 elections and which would set the tone for the crucial election campaign to come.

Mohan Bhagwat defies Kerala govt’s order and hoists Tiranga in the state

0

RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat who is currently on a two day visit to the state of Kerala was invited by a school run by RSS supporters to be the Chief Guest on the occasion of India’s 71st Independence Day. It was also stated that Bhagwat would be the one unfurling the National Flag at the event which was about to start at 9:00 AM.

The Karnaki Amman Higher Secondary school in the Palakkad district of Kerala is incidentally an aided school and  the District Collector P Marykutty wasn’t very receptive of the idea of Bhagwat unfurling the flag. The Collector stated that it was not proper for a political leader to hoist the flag in a government aided school and stated that either the head teacher or the student representative should do it.

The Collector then issued a notice in this regard to the school management, teachers and the district superintendent of the police today morning. This order was naturally opposed by the RSS, which claimed that according to the Flag code, anyone could hoist the national flag on the Independence day.

The decision was then challenged by the BJP and later details emerged that Bhagwat had decided to outright defy the order and hoist the flag:

This episode caused a lot of controversy online and here are a few reactions by the people:

Communists are claiming that this act of hoisting the national flag a ‘deliberate attempt to stir controversy’.

Gorakhpur tragedy: now vendor claims oxygen cylinder supply was never stopped

0

We have been giving updates about the Gorakhpur tragedy where over 60 infants died, allegedly due to short supply of oxygen over nonpayment of dues. First reports emerged of one Dr. Kafeel Khan, nodal officer, paediatric department at Gorakhpur’s BRD Medical College. Earlier, he was hailed as a good samaritan who saved the lives of countless children that night. Soon, social media dug up not so flattering reports about his past.

People outraged when he was sacked and media was also quick to question his removal. Even as he called it a smear campaign against him, other reports make serious allegations against him, including stealing oxygen cylinders for his private practice.

Now, fresh details have emerged which suggest that the supply of oxygen cylinders was never stopped by the vendor, despite nonpayment of dues.

“Liquid oxygen supply maintained by Pushpa Sales to BRD hospital, irrespective of overdue payment, was duly maintained. First supply for this month was made on August 4 and the next intimation for refilling request from the BRD hospital came on August 11, which was fulfilled on August 12,” said Meenu Walia of Pushpa Sales.

The vendor also claims the hospital became overdependent on liquid oxygen supply and also raised doubts of theft of oxygen in the hospital.

“Since April, this problem of delay in payment by the hospital had compounded. There were three conditions as part of our contract, according to which liquid oxygen, oxygen cylinders and Ambu bags were to be present at the BRD in abundance. But the hospital became too dependent on us while not refilling their cylinders. The government must find why there were just around 50 cylinders instead of 400 on that particular day when deaths took place. I suspect a big oxygen cylinder theft or racket, which they must find it out,” Pushpa Sales MD Manish Bhandari told Times of India.

As per latest development, Dr. Khan seems to have implicitly admitted to be running a private practice as well. As per reports in Times of India, Dr. Khan sent a series of text messages from his wife’s phone.

On Monday he said through a text message from his wife’s mobile phone, “Almost every doctor, even the newly-appointed nodal officer, Dr Bhupendra Sharma, and other senior doctors, are engaged in private practice.”

It is reported that Dr. Khan too has a private practice.

Some media reports, however, suggest that Dr. Khan is being made a scapegoat as Yogi Government does not seem to be happy with it. The report also claims that the rape accusations against Dr. Khan are false and he did not have any role in procurement of oxygen for the hospital.

The truth about Yogi govt wanting video ‘proof of patriotism’ from Madarsas

An innocuous circular issued by the Madarsa Shiksha Parishad of Uttar Pradesh directing all Madrasas under its jurisdiction to hoist the National flag and organize cultural programs to commemorate the Independence day this year became grist for the mill of Mainstream Media, for whom anything that Yogi Adityanath or for that matter Narendra Modi does has to be viewed through the prism of “Hindu communalism and hegemony.”

Nowadays, small matters like context, history, the need to read the actual circular before jumping to conclusions, and the principle of “fair balance”, so crucial to news reportage are all conveniently forgotten in the mad rush to gain TRPs and be the first to “break the news.”

Television and print-media reports went to town claiming that the Yogi government wanted photos and videos of the events as “evidence.” It is fair to assume that most news houses did not read the circular in full or did but chose to interpret it this way. They were aided in this by some Madarsas representatives who too claimed they were being put through a patriotism test.

However, facts of the matter are different than what is being portrayed and claimed.

A reading of the circular (in Hindi) should inform us that this is nothing more than a standard “sarkaari” letter asking that the madrasas celebrate Independence day with pride and gaiety along with a listing of the program agenda including hoisting of the flag, offering respects/homage to the memory of our freedom fighters, sing songs and organize cultural programs that inculcate a sense of unity and patriotism amongst students, and finally distribution of sweets at the end of the cultural programs.

The “offending” sentence actually occurs at the end of the circular and only asks that the proceedings of the celebrations be photographed and videographed so that programs that have been conducted in an excellent fashion may serve as a template for future Independence day programs and to award/reward people/institutes that have excelled in the conduct of the program.

A copy of the circular can be seen in the picture below:

circular about Independence Day celebrations in Madarsa

Now that the true purport of the circular has been clarified, let us look at the history behind this circular.

The 11th Five Year Plan of the National Development Council under the UPA regime in 2007 brought out a document, titled ‘Madarsas/Maktabs‘, informing all of these centers/schools that they would receive a special grant to celebrate national festivals of Independence day and Republic Day. However, the document added that for them to be eligible for this grant they must mandatorily host the National Flag on these occasions – This was in 2007 when the UPA was in power. There was no such massive outrage then. The question that naturally follows is why is so much being made out of this circular now?

But there is more than just UPA vs NDA or Congress vs BJP.

In 2015, Ajeet Gaur a director at the Devi College in Aligarh, filed a writ petition in the Allahabad high court asking why the Uttar Pradesh government did not direct all madrassas to unfurl the national flag on Independence Day and Republic Day. A bench of the Allahabad High Court headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud along with Justice DY Yeshwant Verma, which heard this writ petition, issued a directive to the State Government asking them to ensure that all Madarsas not only hoisted the National Flag on these two days but also sang the National anthem. Further the court directed the state government to “issue necessary directions in this regard”

The fact therefore is that all of this outrage by sections of the media and intelligentsia is simply “manufactured” outrage and nothing else. The Adityanath government was simply following the instructions of the High Court in issuing the circular to the madrasas.

CNN News 18 posts wrong map of India, deletes after being corrected

Last year, NDTV was taken to task by an ordinary social media user for a gross “error”. During a show on the channel, with NDTV chief promoter Dr Prannoy Roy on camera, NDTV used a map of India showing Aksai Chin as a part of China and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir as a part of Pakistan. The user filed a complaint on the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS)  and soon NDTV was made to apologise on prime time, by the News Broadcasting Standards Authority:

Today, on Independence Day, CNN News 18 did an NDTV. In a tweet commemorating Independence Day, CNN News 18 put out a Map of India which did not show Pakistan Occupied Kashmir as a part of India:

What the people at CNN News 18 did not realise, was quickly picked up by alert social media users. Soon, readers pointed out that the map used was incorrect:

One user also tagged the Prime Minister, Home Minister and the I & B Minister, to possibly force CNN News 18 to take down the tweet

To the channel’s credit, they quickly took the tweet down, and posted the correct map of India soon:

Honest mistake or just caught out? One may never know.

Firstpost writes a sensational report by falsely attributing a Kerala law to the Modi govt

On Monday Firstpost published a report titled:

Centre warns taxi drivers: If you pick up drunk passengers, we’ll catch you

Going by the title, it can be insinuated that the Modi government had brought a strange law wherein they had warned that if taxi drivers took in drunk passengers, they would be penalised. The logic in itself was silly as its prudent for any person in an inebriated state to take a cab as the other scenario of them driving on their own is unlawful and extremely dangerous.

The report in the content then quoted the New Indian Express and claimed that according to some Motor Vehicles driving regulation 2017:

The driver shall strictly comply with the laws for the time being in force relating to the prohibition on the consumption of alcohol and drugs and smoking, and also ensure compliance there by the other crew, riders and passengers if any

The report also carried a quote of V Sureshkumar, senior deputy transport commissioner (Tax),  Motor Vehicle Department, Kerala who stated that:

If earlier, the drivers were punished for riding after consuming alcohol, with this new rule, they along with the crew will be subjected to punishment if they ride or drive the vehicle under the influence of alcohol. The drivers have to ensure their passengers are not in an inebriated state, otherwise they’ll be booked under the new rule

The quote which was also borrowed by Firstpost from the New Indian Express article was of an employee of Motor Vehicle Department of Kerala. This was strange as if a notification is issued by the Central government, the input should be taken from a Ministry of Road Transport & Highway employee.

On further investigation, it was found that this act by Firstpost could have well been a media hitjob. Incidentally the report which Firstpost had linked back to was about Kerala and had no mention about the Central government or its warning. Then it was found that even NewsX had carried an article on the subject which really puts Firstpost in a tight spot. The NewsX article was titled as:

Drunk passengers? Driver will be booked says Kerala’s new law

Hence the report outright confirms that the law which came into effect from 23rd June was framed by the Kerala government but it has till now desisted from implementing it. Further according to the report, drivers associated with various online cab services had expressed concern about it affecting their revenue considerably. So clearly there was no involvement of the centre or its warning in this localised law.

Incidentally the Firstpost article also contained the footnote that it was based on inputs from PTI which incidentally has been notorious in spreading fake news recently and was questioned by the people.

Gorakhpur hospital didn’t pay the oxygen supply firm despite having funds: Gaon Connection

0

Even as we come to terms with death of over 60 infants at Gorakhpur’s BRD Hospital due to alleged disruption in oxygen supply over nonpayment of dues, new details are emerging which point towards a serious case of gross neglect by the hospital authorities. Gaon Connection, a rural media platform, reveals that despite available funds in the bank, the medical college did not divert the funds to make payment for oxygen supply which led to the tragedy.

According to Gaon Connection, had principal Dr. Rajiv Misra of BRD Medical College diverted the available funds for payment of oxygen supply, the deaths could have been avoided. The report says the college had funds of Rs. 1.25 crore for other uses, which, if the principal wanted, could have been used to make payment to the agency which supplied oxygen to the hospital, and perhaps the lives of children could have been saved.

The report further states that till now, Rs. 3.78 crore have been allocated to BRD Medical College, of which Rs. 2.5 crore have been utilised. “When the principal knows oxygen is the lifeline, why wasn’t the payment made?” asked K K Gupta, director general medical education (DGME). He further states that it is not necessary to take permission in case of essentials like oxygen, as the government has given standing instructions regarding the same.

The report also quotes a hospital employee who, on condition of anonymity, said that in all this, the principle (Dr. Rajiv Misra) and the head of encephalitis (Dr. Kafeel Khan) are responsible. He added that when CM Yogi Adityanath visited the hospital on 9th August, they did said everything is working properly and did not talk about the crisis on hand.

He even insisted that the government investigates these two men in depth. It is believed that the two men worked in connivance and the tales of Dr. Khan’s heroics are incorrect.

A magisterial probe has been ordered into the incident. Further details are awaited…

21 JD(U) leaders including Bihar state President suspended as tussle within the party continues

21 leaders belonging to the JDU including their Bihar state President and former minister were today suspended from the primary membership of the party by citing their indulgence in anti-party activities.

Recently we had reported how the war within the JD(U) was escalating after Nitish Kumar’s decision to sever ties with the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar and join hands with the BJP. Many leaders inside the party had reservations about this move including veteran leader and former party President Sharad Yadav.

Few examples of the dissent were, Sharad Yadav having a meeting with Rahul Gandhi in Delhi, MP Ali Anwar saying that his conscience did not allow him to support this decision and JD(U) from Gujarat Chhotubhai Vasava voting for Ahmed Patel in the Rajya Sabha election.

All this seemed to have been spearheaded by Sharad Yadav who had also tried to corner the Modi government by peddling Congress’s “biggest scam of the century” theory and also backing Chhotubhai Vasava’s decision.

All this didn’t go unnoticed and Sharad Yadav was removed as the party’s leader in the Rajya Sabha by citing the reason to be anti-party activities. Further Rajya Sabha MP Ali Anwar who had made the conscience statement was suspended from the parliamentary party for attending an opposition meet.

The Nitish Kumar led party now seems to be clamping down even further on any sort of rebellion with the suspension of these 21 leaders:

Suspension notice via ANI

According to the notice accessed by ANI, the state party President Vashistha Narayan Singh had suspended the 21 leaders which included former minister Ramai Ram, former MP Arjun Rai, former MLA Rajkishor Sinha. The notice was undersigned by state General Secretary Anil Kumar.

There was a bit of a comic moment an hour later when it was reported that the state party president who had suspended these leaders(according to the notice) was also suspended by the party:

These 21 suspended leaders had reportedly accompanied Sharad Yadav on his Bihar tour from 10-12 August. It remains to be seen if the party also takes such a serious step against Sharad Yadav in the coming days.
