‘She has pulled a prank on cancer survivors’: Maharashtra politician demands police action against Poonam Pandey for faking her death

On Saturday (3rd February), a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council Satyajeet Tambe demanded police action against actor-model Poonam Pandey for faking her death to raise awareness about cervical cancer.

Tambe, an independent member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, stated that Mumbai Police should register a case against Poonam Pandey to set an example for those who do similar antics for self-promotion and publicity.

In a statement, issued after Poonam Pandey announced that her death drama was part of a cervical cancer awareness campaign, Tambe said: “The news of an influencer/model dying of cervical cancer cannot be a means to spread awareness about the disease. The entire episode takes away the serious nature of cervical cancer and diverts the attention entirely to the influencer. The actor has pulled a prank on the cancer survivors rather than raising awareness. Another problem is how the drama was reported and picked up by news agencies without verifying facts. Media was being used to further their agenda through unfair means.”

This comes after Poonam Pandey posted a video on her Instagram account to inform that she faked her death to raise awareness about cervical cancer.

 “I feel compelled to share something significant with you all – I am here, alive. Cervical Cancer didn’t claim me, but tragically, it has claimed the lives of thousands of women who stemmed from a lack of knowledge on how to tackle this disease. Unlike some other cancers, Cervical Cancer is entirely preventable. The key lies in the HPV vaccine and early detection tests. We have the means to ensure no one loses their life to this disease,” she said.

On Saturday, Poonam Pandey’s actions provoked outrage among the people. Many, including actor Pooja Bhatt and filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri, have called out Poonam for her “disgraceful” stunt. Meanwhile, the All Indian Cine Workers Association has demanded that she be booked for faking her death. 

Taking to X, the Cine worker’s body issued a statement in which it demanded an FIR against model turned-actor Poonam Pandey and her manager for sharing fake news about her own death and exploiting the ‘guise of cervical cancer’ for personal gains.

Punjab Police arrest Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s close aide Chhota Mani, had provided hideouts to Sidhu Moosewala’s killers

On 3rd February (Saturday), the Anti-Gangster Task Force of the Punjab Police stated that it has arrested Mandeep Singh alias Chotta Mani who is a close aide of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Singh allegedly provided hideouts for the killers of controversial singer-turned-politician Sidhu Moosewala. 

Singh alias Chotta Mani was arrested with an accomplice Jatinder Singh in Manimajra. Police teams also recovered two .32 caliber pistols along with 12 live cartridges from their possession.

Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said that following reliable inputs about the presence of Chotta Mani in the Zirakpur area, teams of Punjab Police’s Anti-Gangster Task Force traced him and arrested him along with an associate.

He added that Chotta Mani arranged hideouts for the killers of Moosewala, who was shot dead in May 2022.

According to the Police official, both the accused were actively working for Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar gangs. The duo have a criminal history. 

Yadav said that cases of attempt to murder, extortion, robbery, and those under the Arms Act are registered against them in Chandigarh and Haryana.  

As per the DGP, preliminary investigation has revealed that handlers based abroad had tasked the accused to carry out targeted killings of rival gangsters 

Assistant Inspector General Sandeep Goel stated that Bishnoi wanted to help Chotta Mani settle abroad and sent him to Dubai thrice to facilitate his safe entry into Europe. 

The officer added that Chotta Mani, however, failed to get entry into Europe and had to return to India.

Goel added that in 2022, accused Chotta Mani along with his other associates Sachin Thapan, Deepak Mundi, and Joginder Joga – all shooters and accused involved in Sidhu Moosewala murder, were directed by foreign handlers to commit the sensational crime. It was done on the directions of Ayodhya-based politician Vikas Singh, who was later arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in November 2023, the officer added.

Sidhu Moosewala, whose real name is Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu was shot dead in an attack in Mansa, Punjab. The attack took place in the village Jawaharke of Mansa on 29th May 2022, a day after the AAP-led Punjab government had withdrawn his security. The 28-year-old Sidhu hailed from the village Moosa in Mansa in Punjab and was also a Congress leader.

Maharashtra police and military intelligence jointly uncovered a Delhi-based gang involved in the manufacture and sale of the Indian Army’s new combat counterfeit uniforms in the open market on Friday.

Initial investigation found that the kingpin of the gang was linked to Delhi and Rajasthan.

Based on specific inputs given by Southern Command, Military Intelligence, Pune, on Friday, Bhingar police in Ahmednagar arrested an individual named Suresh Khatri, resident of Anand Nagar, Nashik who was found in possession of 40 units of Fake Combat Uniform of the new pattern at Ahmednagar Cantt premises.

Further, it came to light that the individual supplied an illegal/ fake combat uniform of new (Digital Pattern Combat Uniform) in Nashik and Ahmednagar on the context procured from the Canteen Stores Department to Army Personnel.

The investigation further highlighted that the big racket of illegal sale of combat pattern uniforms is being run in the open market. Other accomplices’ names were also revealed by the individual for their involvement in nexus from New Delhi and Rajasthan.

The Indian Army obtained the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) design and camouflage patterns of its newly introduced camouflage pattern dress. The copyright of the design patented by the Indian Army for 10 years was extended for another five years.

The IPR was obtained to prevent unauthorized vendors from manufacturing and selling the combat pattern dress in the open market as it was posing a serious security threat to the Indian Army and the Nation as a whole.

As per the provisions on the subject, this uniform will only be sold in the Unit Run Canteens of the Indian Army. Any unauthorized reproduction of design/sale of illegal combat patterns infringes the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) exclusively obtained by the Indian Army.

The accused was selling unlicensed new types of combat fake uniforms. Local police were alerted as the adjacent Aurangabad and Pune districts are very important and sensitive places for the army, thus the possibility of someone entering the restricted area of the concerned army department by using a fake uniform of the army cannot be ruled out.

On 3rd January (Saturday), Bageshwar Dham’s Pandit Dhirendra Krishna Shastri launched his book titled ‘Sanatan Dharm Kya Hai’ at the Constitution Club in New Delhi. His book was jointly launched by Parmarth Niketan seer Chidanand Muni and BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi. Additionally, BJP MP from North East Delhi Manoj Tiwari and party leader Neelkant Bakshi were also present at the book launch event. 

Speaking at the book launch, Dhirendra Shastri emphasised the need for educating the country’s children about the concept of ‘Sanatan Dharma’ and how it represented ancient India. He said, “I hope every child reads the book so that they know about Sanatan Dharma and that it is eternal truth and has no beginning and ending.” 

According to Dhirendra Shastri, Sanatan Dharma makes a person humane. The subject of religious observance is life itself. Among all religions, Sanatan Dharma is supreme. Its knowledge is pure, understanding it is wisdom, and manifesting it is science. However, most young people as well as elderly individuals are unaware of the principles of Sanatan Dharma.

Shastri explained that six months ago he completed the book in five days when he was in the southern state with the inspiration received from Lord Hanuman. He added that the book doesn’t compare it with others. 

He shared some anecdotes adding that many youths and families he met in rural areas, had converted their religion. In such a situation, it is very important to teach children about the knowledge of Dharma. According to him, the book will be meaningful only when every child has it in his bag. It will be started from Madhya Pradesh. After which examinations will also be conducted in all the states.

He added that the book aims to improve the character of the youth. He stated that the book will be translated into all languages including Urdu, Punjabi, and Marathi. He said that violence should be stopped. The temple is being rebuilt. This is a good sign. Nandi has emerged in Gyanvapi, now Lord Shankar is certain to emerge.

On this occasion, MP Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi said that saints are considered living pilgrims. Children ask about Dharma, but many parents do not know. Forget about studying Dharma, they haven’t turned a page (of scriptures). Today, if there is a thought of Khandaan (refutation) of Sanatan, then there should also be a thought of Mandan (corroboration).

Trivedi said Shastri’s devotion to Sanatan Dharma at a young age represented a young India with its ancient civilisational roots. This generation of Amrit Kaal will create a thousand-year history of Sanatan Dharma to come.

At the event, Swami Chidanand Saraswati, President of Parmarth Niketan said that Bageshwar Dham has brought Kedarnath, Badrinath to mind. Respect for faith is Sanatan Dharma. In present times people have forgotten to read books and know about themselves. If Sanatan is not there, there will be no secularism and humanity. It is not an eternal disease but a cure. Ram is not a dispute but a solution.

Quality standards for 5 spices finalised at 7th session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs, 31 countries attended the meet in Kochi

The 7th session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) was held from 29th January 2024 to 2nd February 2024 at Kochi. After the Covid-19 pandemic, CCSCH7 was the first session of this committee to be conducted physically. 109 delegates from 31 countries attended the session.

As per a statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs achieved excellent results. In this session, quality standards for 5 spices were finalised. The five spices are small cardamom, turmeric, juniper berry, allpice and star anise.

CCSCH has forwarded these five standards to the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) recommending for adoption at final Step number 8 as full-fledged Codex standards.

Moreover, for the first time ever in this committee, the strategy of grouping of spices was successfully implemented. In this manner the committee finalised the first group standard for ‘spices derived from fruits and berries’ in the present session. This covered three spices, juniper berry, allspice and star anise.

The draft standard for vanilla progressed to step 5 and would be subjected to one more round of scrutiny by member countries before being taken up for discussion in the next session of the committee, the ministry statement added.

More spices are in the pipeline for Codex quality standards. Proposals for development of Codex standards for Dried Coriander Seeds, Large Cardamom, Sweet Marjoram and Cinnamon were put before the committee and were accepted during the session. The committee will work on draft standards for these four spices in its future editions.

The 7th session of CCSCH witnessed participation of a large number of Latin American countries for the first time. The next meeting of the Committee will be conducted after a period of 18 months.

During the interim, electronic working groups (EWGs) chaired by various countries will continue the process of multinational consultation, aimed at developing the standards for various spices, relying on science-based evidence.

The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), jointly established by FAO and WHO, is an international, intergovernmental body with membership of over 194 countries, which is based in Rome and is tasked with formulating internationally accepted standards pertaining to human food.

The CAC conducts its work through various Codex committees, including the CCSCH, hosted by different member countries.

The Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) was established as one of the Commodity Committees under the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) in 2013. India hosts this prestigious Committee since the beginning and Spices Board India serves as the Secretariat organization which organises the Committee’s sessions.

The standards of CAC are recognized by the WTO as international reference points for the resolution of trade disputes concerning food safety and consumer protection. The standards developed by the Committees under the CAC, including the CCSCH, are voluntary in nature, which the member countries of the CAC adopt and use as reference standards to align their national standards. The works of CAC contribute to harmonization of food standards across the globe, facilitate fair global trade in food, and enhance food safety to safeguard the health of global consumers.

ED files complaint against Arvind Kejriwal with Delhi court for repeatedly ignoring summons in the liquor policy scam case

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has moved to Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court and filed a complaint against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for not complying with the summons issued by the agency in the liquor policy money laundering case.

The court heard some submissions on Saturday and put up the matter for the next hearing on February 7, for the remaining submissions and consideration.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal skipped the Enforcement Directorate’s summons for the fifth time in connection with the money laundering probe related to irregularities in the Delhi excise policy 2021-22 case.

Kejriwal has so far skipped four previous summons issued by the ED on January 18, January 3, November 2, and December 22, calling them “illegal and politically motivated.”

The ED wants to record Kejriwal’s statement in the case on issues like the formulation of policy, meetings held before it was finalized, and allegations of bribery.

After Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal skipped the Enforcement Directorate’s summons for the fifth time, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh said that he is not going to the probe agency office out of fear.

“ED keeps calling because their job is to investigate. The reason for an investigation can be anything. To get some information. Many people have not gone there even after ten times in West Bengal. And those who went never came out. He is not going there out of fear,” Ghosh said.

Further, reacting to Kejriwal’s claim that the summons is illegal, Ghosh said, “There is a legal process going on in the court. Go to the court.”

In its sixth charge sheet filed in the case on December 2, 2023, naming AAP leader Sanjay Singh and his aide Sarvesh Mishra, the ED has claimed that the AAP used kickbacks worth Rs 45 crore generated via the policy as part of its assembly elections campaign in Goa in 2022.

The excise policy was aimed at revitalizing the city’s flagging liquor business and replacing a sales-volume-based regime with a licence fee for traders. The policy introduced discounts and offers on the purchase of liquor for the first time in Delhi.

Two senior AAP leaders–Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh–are already under judicial custody in the case. Sisodia, who was the then Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, was arrested by the CBI on February 26 following several rounds of questioning, and on October 5, the ED arrested Singh, who is a Rajya Sabha member.

Cricketer Irfan Pathan was at the receiving end of Islamist fury after he shared a picture of himself with his wife without a burqa. This is the first time Pathan has shared a picture of his wife with her face uncovered.

On his eighth anniversary, Pathan shared a picture with his wife with the caption, “Infinite roles mastered by one soul – mood booster, comedian, troublemaker, and the constant companion, friend, and mother of my children. In this beautiful journey, I cherish you as my wife. Happy 8th my love.”

However, no sooner did the former Indian cricketer share an unveiled picture of his wife, than scores of Islamists descended on his timeline, attacking him for uploading the picture in which his wife has covered herself in a burqa.

“Muslim khatoons ko hijab mein rehna chaye,” replied one of the X users.

Another one replied, “Being a Muslim, you should not reveal her publicly.”

Yet another user shared a picture of Irfan’s brother, Yusuf Pathan and his wife, who was wearing a burqa, and said, “That’s why your brother is better than you.”

One X user asked if he had kept his wife under purdah for so long, what was the need today that he had to show her face to everyone today.

Irfan Pathan married Saba Baig, a former model born and brought up in Saudi Arabia, on 4 February 2016. Baig gave up her thriving modelling career after her marriage with the cricketer.

As per reports, she encountered Irfan Pathan in 2014, initiating a romantic relationship that culminated in marriage in 2016. At the time of their union, she was merely 21 years old, presenting a decade’s age difference with her spouse, Irfan Pathan. The couple welcomed their son, Imran Khan, in December 2016.

Irfan Pathan had thus far always refrained from sharing pictures of his wife’s face online. In the pictures he had shared before, his wife was either spotted in a burqa or with hands covering her face.

According to the Muslim fundamentalists following the puritanical strand of Islam, their religious scriptures ordain women to remain under a hijab in a public place.

In 2022, a controversy erupted in Karnataka over the hijab ban in schools and colleges that had uniforms. The ban was upheld by the Karnataka High Court which observed that wearing a hijab is not an essential practice in Islam. A large number of Muslim fundamentalists had protested against the then BJP government in the state, accusing them of Islamophobia for enforcing the rules of uniform in schools and colleges. Several so-called liberals had then sided with the fundamentalists, contending that wearing a hijab was a ‘choice’ and the government was infringing upon the individual rights enshrined in the constitution.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) searched eight places on 3rd February in West Bengal including Kolkata and the 24 North Parganas district in response to allegations of fraudulent use of residence credentials to obtain benefits granted to border-area residents in Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) recruitment, according to officials.

The Calcutta High Court ordered the agency to look into complaints that a number of candidates were illegally recruited into the armed forces and the CAPFs by using forged domicile documents that claimed that they were from border areas. This allowed them to pass the examination with lower cut-off marks. The probe was taken over by the CBI in August of last year.

Notably, the FIR has asserted that certain citizens of Pakistan had also benefited from the same by using forged certificates. However, no more about the Pakistanis has been made available so far.

CBI also arrested two officers in connection with the case. One of them is Rajatkanti Mandal, an officer in charge of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes offices in the District Magistrate’s office.

According to officials, the action took place at the homes of fraudsters who were purportedly involved in fabricating residency paperwork. Judge Jay Sengupta reviewed the preliminary investigation results of the CBI and ruled that while there were no anomalies in the armed services recruitment process, there were four cases in the Central Para Military forces.

Justice Jay Sengupta highlighted, “However, as regards employment in the Central Para Military Forces, some irregularities have already been detected. During preliminary enquiry, at least four such instances have come to light.” He added that West Bengal permits lesser cut-off scores in the exams for employment in the Central Para Military Forces because it is a border state.

The judge cited testimony from the deputy solicitor general and proclaimed, “This seems to have prompted people from other states, especially from the northern part of the country, to forge documents to show that they were domiciled in the State of West Bengal.”

He further noted, “Domicile certificates, matriculation certificates and caste certificates have been forged. It will be a matter of a more in-depth investigation whether foreign nationals have also taken recourse to the same modus operandi in applying for jobs in the Indian forces.”

The PR stunt by model-actress Poonam Pandey of faking her death to ‘raise awareness about cervical cancer’ has backfired badly, as she is being widely slammed by netizens and many prominent names in the entertainment industry. Now the All Indian Cine Workers Association has demanded that she be booked for faking her death. 

Taking to X, the Cine worker’s body issued a statement in which it demanded an FIR against model turned-actor Poonam Pandey and her manager for sharing fake news about her own death and exploiting the ‘guise of cervical cancer’ for personal gains.  

In the post, AICWA slammed the model-turned-actor for using the guise of raising awareness for cervical cancer for self-promotion stressing that it is not acceptable. In their statement, the Cine Workers body stressed that such news will cause harm as following this episode people might be hesitant to believe about any death news from the film industry. 

It wrote, “The fake PR stunt by model and actress Poonam Pandey is highly wrong. Using the guise of cervical cancer for self-promotion is not acceptable. After this news, people may hesitate to believe any death news in the Indian film industry. No one in the film industry stoops to such levels for PR.”

It added that her manager should also be booked for confirming the false news so that it prevents anyone from exploiting their own death news for personal gains (PR). 

It further read, “Poonam Pandey’s manager had confirmed the False News, so there should be an FIR against Poonam Pandey and her manager to prevent anyone exploiting their own death news for personal gains (PR). The entire Indian film industry, along with the entire nation, paid tribute.”

Additionally, several others from the Bollywood fraternity have condemned the actor for faking her death to create awareness about cervical cancer. This included Pooja Bhatt, Vivek Agnihotri, Shruti Seth, Rahul Vaidya and others. A large number of people mourned the ‘death’ of Poonam Pandey, and they were visibly upset at her for this stunt. Poonam Pandey’s close friend Shardul Pandit slammed her saying that death is not a joke, and such a stunt is not cool.

Rakhi Sawant came down heavily on Poonam Pandey for the ‘prank’, asking how someone can do this. She said that she was crying after hearing the news, media and fans were upset. She warned Poonam Pandey to not repeat such a ‘dirty prank’.

It is important to note that Poonam Pandey’s team had on Friday (2nd February) shared a statement on Instagram which claimed that the actor had died from cervical cancer. Reacting to the post, several users expressed shock stating that they had interacted with or seen the actor days earlier and she was fine. Meanwhile, when tributes poured in over the post, the mystery deepened as her family reportedly went missing after the announcement and her agency was unable to confirm the news. 

However, some users had shared apprehensions that it might just be a ‘PR stunt’ which was confirmed by the actor herself earlier in the day on Saturday.

A statement was also posted on Poonam’s official Instagram which read, “This morning is a tough one for us. Deeply saddened to inform you that we have lost our beloved Poonam to cervical cancer. Every living form that ever came in contact with her was met with pure love and kindness.”

The news of her demise was circulated online widely, making many offer their condolences. Actors Kangana Ranaut and Karan Kundrra also expressed their grief.

However, on Saturday, Poonam shared a video on social media announcing that she is alive and shared that she faked her demise as she intended to raise awareness about cervical cancer.

“I never delete tweets but did so in the case where I expressed my shock at news of Poonam Pandey’s demise due to cervical cancer. Why? Turns out the news was engineered by a digital/PR team. Absolute disgrace & disservice to those battling the same-her included,” Pooja Bhatt wrote on X.

“Actually, it was a marketing campaign for @thehauterrfly. Watch the end and the logo on right upper corner. How sinister, how pathetic,” Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri posted on X.

Taking to Instagram, actor Shruti Seth also slammed Poonam.
