Kuwait bans ‘Barbie’ film for ‘promoting homosexuality’; film also under fire in Lebanon

Kuwait has banned the Hollywood film Barbie over its portrayal of a same-sex couple. The movie, directed by Greta Gerwig featuring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, has collected over a Billion dollars worldwide in box office collections. Despite the box office success, many in the Middle East have raised objections to the film’s portrayal of same-sex relationship. The film earlier faced a ban in Vietnam.

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Information announced the ban on Barbie, citing its infringement upon the nation’s laws and values. While the precise laws and values weren’t specified, it’s apparent that the depiction of homosexuality likely contributed to the ban. Lafi Al-Subaie, the head of the film censorship committee, has said that it propagates ideas promoting inappropriate conduct and distorting societal values.

Barbie is also feeling the heat in Lebanon, where the culture minister, Mohammad Mortada, said that Barbie “promotes homosexuality” and “contradicts values of faith and morality.” Mortada also said that the film “diminishes the importance of the family unit.”

The film ‘Barbie,’ featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the main roles, premiered in theatres on July 21. Despite receiving varied reviews, the movie has positioned itself among the top-grossing films of 2023. Notably, ‘Barbie’ and its director Greta achieved a significant milestone last weekend, crossing the USD 1 billion mark in global box office earnings. This achievement is historic, marking the first instance of a movie directed by a woman to reach this milestone.

The prohibition of Barbie adds to the trend of banning films in the Middle East due to apprehensions surrounding homosexuality. Within the past few years, films like Call Me by Your Name, Moonlight, and The Danish Girl, have encountered bans in the region. This ban on Barbie exemplifies an escalating lack of tolerance towards homosexuality in the Middle East, a sentiment accentuated by the religious underpinnings prevalent in the predominantly Muslim countries of the region.

Shiv Sena MLA’s son booked for kidnapping a music company CEO in Mumbai, video of the incident goes viral

On Wednesday, August 9th, 2023, the son of a Shiv Sena MLA and several others were charged for purportedly orchestrating an armed kidnapping of a businessman in Mumbai. The Mumbai Police received a formal complaint and lodged an FIR at the Vanarai Police station, naming Raj Surve, the son of Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MLA Prakash Surve, among the accused. The incident involved the alleged abduction of Rajkumar Singh, the CEO of a music company, in the Goregaon East area, reportedly for ransom. A video of the incident has also gone viral on social media.

As detailed in the complaint filed by Rajkumar Singh, the CEO of Global Music Junction, a private limited enterprise, a contingent of approximately 15 individuals forcefully entered his Goregaon office. Armed with guns, they coerced him into a vehicle. Subsequently, Singh was purportedly transported to the premises associated with MLA Prakash Surve, who is aligned with the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena. This location is situated near the Universal School in the Dahisar East region of suburban Mumbai.

In the filed complaint, Rajkumar Singh contended that he had been coerced into signing legal documents at a location adjacent to the MLA’s office. The complaint led to the registration of an FIR against Raj Surve, the lawmaker’s son, and over a dozen other individuals logged at the Vanrai Police Station.

According to the filed FIR, Rajkumar Singh’s company specializes in extending loans to music enterprises in exchange for digital and OTT rights. He asserted that he had entered into a one-year agreement with a music company, Adishakti Pvt. Ltd., operated by Manoj Mishra. Allegedly, Mishra failed to honour the contract and neglected to repay the borrowed sum. Singh further claimed that he was subjected to verbal abuse and physical assault by Mishra, who coerced him into signing a contract termination document. Adding to the narrative, Singh stated that Raj Surve, son of Prakash Surve, urged him to “settle the matter” with Mishra, who is also named as a party in the FIR.

Rajkumar Singh said in his complaint, “On the instruction of Raj Surve, men who brought me in that office, shifted me in some building 500 metre away. Took me to the first floor of that building and kept me there. Meanwhile, I was getting phone calls from the police asking about my whereabouts, men around me asked me to tell the police that I am at MLA Prakash Surve’s office.”

He added, “Later, I was given Rs 100 stamp paper and forcibly asked to sign the contract cancelling papers, which Mishra kept with him after I signed on it. Later I was also threatened that if I speak about this to anyone, a money laundering case will be filed against me and they will ask a lady to file a false complaint against me. Later, I was again taken to Surve’s office where police along with my relatives and office associates had come.”

The complaint letter further said, “Initially, I was under pressure and threat, hence I refused to file a complaint, but later when I got stable and got support from my family and office associates, I filed a complaint in Vanrai police station.”

As per Rajkumar Singh’s legal representative, the sum in dispute for the loan equates to Rs 8.5 crore. The police registered charges against Raj Surve and several others under IPC Sections 364-A, 452, 143, 147, 149, 323, 504, and 506, in addition to Sections 3 and 25 of the Arms Act.

Karnataka: Yadgir police arrest Mohammad Ayaz and Akbar Syed for social media post threatening to behead those who ‘insult’ Prophet Muhammad

On Tuesday, August 8, Yadgir Town Police in Karnataka arrested two Muslim youths for hate speech over a social media post threatening to behead those who ‘insult’ Prophet Muhammad. The accused have been identified as Akbar Syed Bahadur Ali and Mohammad Ayaz. Both the accused are residents of Hattikuni Cross in Yadgir.

Recently, a video of the two accused Akbar Syed Bahadur Ali and Mohammad Ayaz went viral over social media wherein the two were heard saying that they have been taught since childhood not to tolerate ‘insult’ of Prophet Mohammad and to behead those who do so. The two further challenge Hindus for a 15-minute face-off. As seen in the video, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi’s picture is in the background as Akbar Syed and Mohammad Ayaz reiterated AIMIM leader Akabaruddin Owaisi’s “remove the police for 15 minutes and we will see who is more powerful” remark made in 2012.

The two Muslim youths went on to claim that “those who inflict atrocities on Muslims and target them can fly as high as they want in this world, but in Quran, it is mentioned that an infidel’s (Kafir) final destination is Jahannum (hell).”

Superintendent of Police C.B. Vedamurthy stated in a press release issued on Tuesday that the accused persons uploaded provocative content on social media inciting their community members.

A case has been registered under Sections 153 and 505/2 of the Indian Penal Code. Meanwhile, Karnataka police informed over X that the accused have been arrested and that further investigation is underway.

One of the accused, Akbar Syed, reportedly has an Instagram account with over 9,000 followers where he posts inflammatory videos. Meanwhile, SP Vedamurthy stated that Syed Akbar worked for the Kohinoor Solar company, whereas Mohammad Ayaz owned a chicken shop.

As the said offensive and hateful videos went viral on social media, Hindu organisations including Hindu Jan Jagruthi Samithi urged police to file an FIR and arrest the two hatemongers.

‘We don’t want your money, use it to sponsor a weight loss program for Victoria Nuland’: Niger’s military rulers tell USA

The military government in Niger has rejected the USA’s attempts to find a ‘diplomatic solution’ to ‘restore democracy’ in their country after the July 26 coup. Another proposed visit led by UN representatives and diplomats from the Western African bloc was rejected by niger on Tuesday.

On July 26, the military of Niger, led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, who was the former chief of the Presidential Guard, seized power in the Sahel nation by removing President Mohammad Bazoum. Bazoum has been in detention since.

As per reports, a diplomatic mission, led by US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland had traveled to Niger’s capital Nimaye. However, they could only meet the new military chief of staff  Brigadier General Moussa Salaou Barmou, not the new leader General Abdourahamane Tchiani or the deposed President Bazoum.

As per reports, the Niger military leaders, who now rule the country, dismissed the threats of economic sanctions and withdrawal of military and financial help from the USA.

Nuland stated that the military leaders of Niger were ‘unresponsive’ to her proposals and suggestions on how they want to proceed to ‘restore democracy’ in the country. The discussion with the military leaders was “extremely frank and at times quite difficult”, Nuland told the media at Nimaye.

Nuland threatens suspension of all help, military leaders reject her threat and throw insults

Nuland had a 2-hour meeting with some of the senior military leaders where she threatened to cut all kinds of support to Niger if the military leaders do not stand down, and let former President Bazoum rule the country again.

Nuland reportedly told the military leaders that she made “absolutely clear the kinds of support that will be legally cut off if democracy is not restored”.

To which, the military leaders of Niger reportedly replied. “We don’t want your money. Use your money to fund a weight loss program for Victoria Nuland.”

It is notable here that the USA has not officially declared military rule as a ‘coup’. If it does, it will be legally able to stop millions of dollars in military and other kinds of assistance. There are over 1000 US military personnel still stationed in Niger. Niger under Bazoum has been a ‘partner’ with the USA and European nations, ‘helping’ them fight Islamic terrorism in the Sahel region. The USA also has a modern drone base in Niger, one that cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build.

However, the military leaders have asserted that Niger’s resources have been exploited by foreign powers.

ECOWAS gives a deadline, Niger closes airspace

Nigers’ military leadership has defied all threats and deadlines to reinstate the President. On Monday, 7 August, the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), stated that they would meet on Thursday, August 10, to discuss the next steps regarding Niger, hinting at a possible military intervention.

In response, Niger has closed its airspace and warned that any military intervention, clearly aided by foreign powers, will be severely dealt with.

In the neighboring country of Nigeria, where President Bola Tinubu had threatened Niger with military invasion, the public has been outraged. Tinubu is facing a huge political and public backlash in his home country for trying to push the country into a war with Niger.

The coup in Niger, how it happened, and why it is significant

on July 26, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the former chief of the Presidential Guard in Niger, orchestrated a coup and removed President Bazoum from power. Bazoum remains in military detention, though he is reported to have spoken with US officials.

General Abdourahamane Tchiani declared that the coup was necessary to prevent Niger’s “gradual and inevitable demise”.

The military leaders are enjoying public support in Niger, with thousands of people flocking to stadiums to declare support for them.

General Abdourahamane Tchiani has been riding on a wave of public support for the military and a general sentiment of rejecting colonial rulers, France, in Niger’s case. The public voices and the military leaders have claimed that Bazoum’s government failed to protect the country from Jihadi terrorism and allowed it to be exploited by foreign powers.

Niger is one of the largest countries in Africa, but also one of the poorest. It sits on huge deposits of Uranium. 25% of the Uranium produced in Niger goes to France, its former colonial master.

Interestingly, after the military takeover, Russian flags suddenly appeared on the streets of Niger, with many people declaring they hate the West and love Russia. The public has been seen rising slogans in support of Vladimir Putin. The military leaders have already asked the mercenary group Wagner to come and help them, and as per reports, Wagner fighters have already reached there.

Russia has been indirectly supporting the removal of Bazoum, at least in words, and has labeled USA’s attempts to ‘restore democracy’ and new methods to exploit the country as they exploited Ukraine.

After taking power, the military leadership in Niger asked the French troops to leave the country. They have also pushed the UN peacekeepers out.

It is notable here that Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali all 3 are currently under military rule that overthrew USA-and Europe supported regimes. Ibrahim Traore, the military leader of Burkina Faso has stated that the military regime has Russia’s support and Russia has been granting them unrestricted access to weapons and equipment at a reasonable price.

NDA partner Mizo National Front to vote in support of no confidence motion, its lone Lok Sabha MP says party unhappy over Manipur issue

The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) in Mizoram, a partner of the NDA, has decided to support the no-confidence motion moved by the opposition against the Narendra Modi government at the centre. This was announced party’s Lok Sabha MP C Lalrosanga on 10th August.

Lalrosanga said that his party will vote against the union government over the Manipur violence issue, protesting against the alleged failure of the govt to handle the situation. “I will back the opposition’s no-confidence motion. It is not because I support the Congress or (want to) go against the BJP, but to show our outright distress and opposition to the complete failure of the governments, especially the Manipur government, in handling the situation,” he said talking to the media in Delhi.

The MP said that the decision was taken after a meeting with CM and party president Zoramthanga and other leaders of the party, and all of them agreed to support the motion. C Lalrosanga said that Mizo National Front is deeply hurt over the condition of the Zo ethnic people in Manipur.

MNF’s Rajya Sabha MP K Vanlalvena also said that he will continue to raise his voice in Parliament against the government’s handling of the situation. Vanlalvena has filed several adjournment motions in the parliament to discuss the Manipur issue.

C Lalrosanga amd K Vanlalvena are the lone MPs of the party in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Unhappy with the centre’s handling of the situation in Manipur, they had skipped an NDA MP meeting last month.

Mizoram minister and MNF leader Lalruatkima confirmed that the party’s Lok Sabha member will support the Opposition’s no-trust vote in the Parliament.

He said, “As the people of Mizoram and the MNF stood by our kindred brothers and sisters in the neighbouring state in time of crisis, and extremely dissatisfied with the butter fingered handling of the ethnic violence, the party decided that our MP will support the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha.”

As the NewsClick scandal becomes bigger, read what UK Parliamentary Report reveals and how The Hindu’s China connections need to be urgently probed too

A New York Time article has now reinforced what the Enforcement Directorate knew all along – Sections of the Indian media are funded by China to spread pro-China and anti-India propaganda in India which is almost always contrary to national interest. The Enforcement Directorate discovered more than two years ago after conducting a probe that NewsClick had received approximately Rs 38 crores in funds from abroad. The agency was able to follow the money trail to American millionaire Neville Roy Singham, who reportedly has extensive ties to the Communist Party of China’s publicity department.

Now, an investigation by the New York Times has recently uncovered an ecosystem of activist organisations, non-profits, shell corporations, and their intimate ties to China and Chinese propaganda. Notably, Neville Roy Singham is at the heart of this network. The article read, “What is less known, and is hidden amid a tangle of nonprofit groups and shell companies, is that Mr Singham works closely with the Chinese government media machine and is financing its propaganda worldwide.”

It was highlighted that he has been successful in spreading talking points from the communist administration in nations including India, Brazil, South Africa, and the United States under the guise of progressive advocacy. The report pointed out, “In New Delhi, corporate filings show, Singham’s network financed a news site, NewsClick, that sprinkled its coverage with Chinese government talking points.”

Through this global ecosystem of activists and non-governmental organisations, China, which has been attempting to assert its economic and global might for quite some time, has created a system that covertly promotes the Chinese people and reiterates the official line. It showed how the country has been able to deflect criticism of its violations of human rights from around the world and how its position on global issues is woven into international discourses owing to this network.

In 2021, OpIndia had done a detailed investigation about the links of NewsClick and uncovered how it was linked to several individuals who regularly spew venom against India – from Urban Naxals to those like Teesta Setalvad, Abhisar Sharma and several others. That investigation by OpIndia can be read here.

While the conversation has been limited to NewsClick, it should essentially be taken for granted that it is not the only media house which gets extensively funded by China to run its propaganda.

The House of Commons Intelligence and Security Committee said in a wide-ranging report released recently that the intelligence threat posed by China is compounded by a ‘whole-of-state’ approach with the use of state and non-state players for spying. Commissioned in 2019, the inquiry by the ISC examines China’s threat across academia, industry, technology and importantly, the media. The report reveals that China aims to acquire information and intellectual property by influencing elites and decision-makers.

The report delves extensively into how China is using the media to further its propaganda and undermine national interest. One specific part of the report reads:

The Chinese government looks to use the UK’s own media to its advantage. The Telegraph was reportedly paid £750,000 p.a. to carry the China Daily newspaper supplement (effectively a CCP mouthpiece), and it has been noted that since 2016 The Telegraph has carried twice the number of signed articles by the Chinese ambassador to the UK than the Daily Mail, The Guardian and the Financial Times put together.184 In April 2020, content from the China Daily disappeared from The Telegraph website: when Buzzfeed and The Guardian asked The Telegraph to comment on its removal, The Telegraph refused to do so.185 When we asked the JIC Chair whether he was concerned that the China Daily supplement was widely available in the UK, he told us that he was not convinced that it posed a significant threat:

The Chinese state, and individuals within it, are under quite a lot of pressure to show that they are doing things to advance the historical inevitability of the rise of China, and it is important that they can do things and report them, and they will report them as a great success. They will say that Daily Telegraph readers, a newspaper which is read by influential people in the United Kingdom, is now getting Chinese input. We might see it as being rather different but I am sure that is how they will be reporting it to Beijing and Beijing may well consider it money well spent.

This part of the report makes an interesting revelation – The Telegraph took copious amounts of money to run CCP propaganda and insert China’s supplement in their paper. In 2020, when The Telegraph took down its CCP propaganda, OpIndia covered the news extensively. Articles deleted by the Daily Telegraph had headlines such as: “Why are some framing China’s heroic efforts to stop coronavirus as inhumane?”, “Traditional Chinese medicine ‘helps fight coronavirus’” and “Coronavirus outbreak is not an opportunity to score points against China”.

The report essentially reveals that China infiltrates media outlets by meeting them and paying them to run their agenda which is often not in the national interest of the country where the media outlet functions. If one thinks about it, this is a smart strategy to subvert a democracy since any such allegation of a news media outlet being funded by China often draws a cacophony of an ‘attack on freedom of the press’, as we have repeatedly seen in India.

Given these revelations in the report, it becomes imperative to analyse which mainstream legacy media house in India has been doing exactly what the Telegraph was doing in the UK.

In 2020, while the world was battling the Chinese Virus and India was planting its feet firmly against the aggression by China, The Hindu ran extensive Chinese propaganda in their papers.

On the 1st of October 2020, The Hindu ran a full page advertorial paid for and planted by China. The paid content appeared on the 3rd page of the paper.

Interestingly, the paid content by China that has been published by The Hindu on Page 3 today does not appear on the digital website of The Hindu. The beauty of the paid content is that to an untrained eye, the full-page article would seem like just that – a feature on how the world is wrong about mighty China and how, on the National Day of the People’s Republic of China, it is time to re-evaluate what “bhakt media” is saying about the country and look towards all its achievements. However, upon closer examination, it becomes clear that the full-page feature was content paid for by China. The advertorial (paid for by China) essentially painted China as a saviour of the world amid the Chinese virus pandemic and also spoke glowingly about itself, taking the high moral ground against India in the standoff that India and China were engaged in at the time.

OpIndia’s detailed report on The Hindu’s Chinese advertorial can be read here.

What is interesting to note here is that according to recent revelations, even in the NewsClick saga, Prabir Purkayastha and NewsClick team were introduced to Chinese handlers by Neville Roy Singham for defending China’s handling of COVID-19.

The email exchanges dated March 30, 2020, on China’s handling of COVID-19 between Prabir and Singham were shared by Zee News journalist Sudhir Chaudhary, days after New York Times investigation said that Singham was using its network of nonprofits and media organisations spread across the world to propagate Chinese propaganda.

In the email exchanges shared by Sudhir Chaudhary, Roy is seen introducing the NewsClick team to the Chinese handlers based out of China to provide information that would help them in showing China in a positive light in handling the coronavirus outbreak.

Among Indians introduced by Neville Roy Singham to his larger team, who worked with Tricontinental, one of the nonprofits that the New York Times said was involved in pushing Chinese talking points, were Prabir Purkayastha, Srujana, Prasanth, and Vijay Prashad.

Given that NewsClick was paid to whitewash China’s handling of COVID and The Hindu too ran an advertorial which praised China as the saviour amid the COVID crisis, it is imperative that authorities investigate The Hindu along with NewsClick.

Pertinently, in June 2022, the Chinese Ambassador to India, Sun Weidong who is on a two-day visit to the state of Tamil Nadu paid a visit to the headquarters of the left-wing outlet The Hindu and held face-to-face talks with its Editor Suresh Nambath and other staff members. “Visited the headquarters of The Hindu. Face-to-face communication leads to mutual understanding and trust. Welcome you all to explore and know more about a real, objective, and 3-dimensional China”, said Ambassador Sun Weidong posting a video of his visit to the media outlet.

It was only a month later, in July 2022, that The Hindu published another advertorial. On July 1 2022, the Hindu had published a full-page advertorial paid for and planted by China on the occasion of the centenary anniversary of the Communist Party of China. The paid content appeared on the third page of the paper.

The details about the The Hindu team meeting the Chinese Ambassador can be read here.

It is, therefore, evident that The Hindu has not even particularly hidden the fact that they are funded by the Chinese and have ran propaganda almost identical to what NewsClick has run in the past after taking money from China. The reportage is often against the interest of India and any media outlet which is funded by a hostile nation to subvert domestic interests needs to be probed.

Nuh violence: Rioters Munsaid and Saikul arrested after police encounter, were hiding in Aravalli Hills

The Haryana police have nabbed two accused involved in the violence that took place in Nuh on 31st July 2023. The accused, identified as Munsaid and Saikul were arrested following a police encounter. According to media reports, Saikul was shot in his leg and has been checked into a hospital.

The duo was hiding in the Aravalli Hills in Haryana’s Nuh, which the Islamists had converted into a tactical cover to evade arrests after they unleashed violence on thousands of Hindu devotees attending the Jalabhishek Yatra on Shravan Somvar on July 31, 2023.

When the Haryana police team was conducting a search operation, they ran into the two accused. Munsaid and Saikul open-fired at the police. The Police responded with retaliatory firing in which one of the accused Saikul was shot in the leg. The duo was eventually arrested. Saikul was admitted to the hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment.

12 Pakistani social media groups identified as significant contributors to the Nuh clashes

Meanwhile, the Haryana police have also shared details of a minimum of 12 social media groups linked to Pakistan that have been identified as significant contributors to the Nuh clashes. These groups, operational on platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and Telegram, boast substantial followings comprising thousands of members from the Mewat region in Haryana and Rajasthan. These groups were actively disseminating messages of animosity through daily broadcasts in the lead up to the Nuh violence.

Rohingya involvement in Nuh violence

On August 9, the Haryana police apprehended two Rohingya Muslims identified as Saifullah and Mehboob, for their alleged role in a violent assault on members of Hindu organisations who were partaking in a religious procession at Khedla Chowk in Nuh on 31st July 2023. During their interrogation, Saifullah and Mehboob, who were implicated in the unrest at Khedla Chowk, admitted to their entry into Assam from Myanmar along with a group of fellow migrants. They acknowledged acquiring Aadhaar cards and additional documentation to establish residency in the region.

According to reports, there are approximately two thousand Rohingyas currently residing in Nuh, and a large number of them possess UN-issued refugee cards. They have once again attracted attention due to their involvement in the recent violence that occurred in Nuh on July 31. The police have registered more than 20 cases and arrested around 25 Rohingya refugees.

On July 31, violence broke out in Haryana’s Nuh district during the ‘Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra,’ which was organized by Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal. Vehicles were burnt and stones pelted at the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s Jalabhishek Yatra as clashes erupted between two communities in the Muslim-majority region of Mewat in Haryana.

Nuh Violence: Rioters attacked vehicle carrying female police constable with stones, opened fire with intention to kill, later burnt the vehicle, says FIR

0

On 31st July, an Islamist mob in Nuh of Mewat, Haryana, attacked thousands of Hindu devotees attending the Jalabhishek Yatra on Shravan Somvar. OpIndia accessed several FIRs registered in the case. One of the FIRs was registered on the complaint of Constable Ramendra Singh under Sections 148, 149, 332, 353, 186, 307, and 435 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 25 of the Arms Act. He is posted as a driver at Women ERV Durga Shakti, Nuh.

Khalid, Saakeer, Abraar, Sameeri, Badruddin, Aarif, Moen, Zishan, Ashfaq, Shahrukh, Sarfuddin and Niiyum were named as accused in FIR. The most important aspect of this FIR was that it detailed how the rioters attacked female police personnel during Nuh violence.

Details of the FIR

In his complaint, Constable Singh said that at around 1:45 PM, he was on routine patrol with woman constable Pinki and the staff in charge of Anjuman at Maalab Polytechnique College. During their routine patrol, they noticed rioters from the Muslim community were charging at them from Maalab village. They took their vehicle and started moving towards Nuh City.

Source: Haryana Police

At the old bus stand, around 700-800 rioters surrounded them with the intention to kill. The rioters started pelting stones and opened fire at them and the windscreen of their vehicle got shattered. One of the stones hit Singh on his shoulder and another on his head. They somehow managed to escape from the vehicle and rushed to safety. The rioters then burnt their vehicle. There were essential files and equipment in the vehicle that got destroyed in the fire.

In the FIR, it is mentioned that the police arrested some of the accused. The rioters informed them where they hid the batons, sticks and illegal weapons. The recovery of the same is underway. Further investigation into the matter is underway.

Nuh Shobhayatra attack

On 31st July, a mob of hundreds of Muslim rioters attacked Hindu devotees participating in the Brijmandal Jalabhishek Yatra in Nuh, Mewat of Haryana. At least six people were killed as a result of the riots.

During the investigation into the riots, OpIndia accessed over 25 FIRs and complaints that provided a clearer picture of what happened during the violence. Based on information available via FIRs, complaints and witnesses, it appeared that the attack was pre-planned. OpIndia came across several videos posted two days before the Jalabhishek Yatra instigating Muslims against Hindus.

Muslims have claimed the riots happened because of Bajrang Dal activist and Gau Rakshak Monu Manesar. Old videos of Manesar were circulated to instigate Muslims saying he was going to Nuh on that day. The video that was mostly circulated was from October 2022. Detailed reports can be checked here.

Furthermore, a cyber crime police station was attacked in Nuh. Police officials were injured. Home guards were killed. The rioters first shot one of the Bajrang Dal activists Abhishek, then his throat was slit and his head was crushed leading to his death.

OpIndia has obtained the FIR copy of the incident which reports that the girl was brutally raped and abused and also threatened on August 8 when she was alone at home. The minor girl studies in class 9 at Subhash Anna School. The accused who stays in the neighborhood of the girl barged into the girl’s home and raped her.

“I returned from school that day and as I entered my home, Ismail barged into my home and locked the doors from inside. He then began to touch me inappropriately. She added that the accused also threatened her saying that he would kill her parents. As per the complaint, the accused then forced himself upon her. The incident came to the fore after the mother of the girl arrived home after some time and spotted the girl crying. The accused then dressed himself and also threatened the woman. The mother-daughter duo then screamed for help after which the other neighbors arrived at the spot and helped the girl.

The accused however managed to escape from the spot after threatening the duo of murder. A police complaint was filed on August 8. The girl in the FIR also mentioned that the accused had also raped her in July this year. “He had threatened me to keep shut otherwise he would kill my parents. I was scared so I didn’t tell anyone about it,” she added.

Crimes against women in Pune

Several crimes against women have recently been reported from Pune raising the alarm of women’s safety in the city. The incident took place in the Hadapsar area of the city and the culprit has now been arrested. He threatened the victim’s spouse at knife-point and then raped her in his presence. Sheikh also recorded the heinous act on a mobile phone and posted the clip on social media platforms.

Further, a brutal case of Love Jihad was reported from the Manchar region of Pune in which a Hindu minor girl was abducted, raped, and assaulted by one Javed Sheikh. The girl was rescued after 4 years and was scared so much so that she even refused to identify and go close to her father. The girl during the period of 4 years was tortured, assaulted, and given the bruises of lit cigarettes.

The Police then arrested the accused and booked him under sections 363 (kidnapping) and 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 4, 6, 8, and 10 of the POCSO Act. Further investigations are underway.

No increase in EMIs as RBI maintains the repo rate at 6.5%, expresses concern over rising inflation

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) paused the repo rates at 6.5 per cent for the third time in a row amid concerns over inflation. The decision was reached during the RBI’s third monetary policy committee meeting which commenced on 8 August and lasted three days.

The central bank normally has six bi-monthly meetings per fiscal year where it makes policies regarding interest rates, the money supply, the prospect for inflation and a number of macroeconomic variables.

The RBI Governor, Shaktikanta Das stated, “Monetary Policy Committee has unanimously decided to keep the repo rate unchanged at 6.50 per cent. Indian economy is exuding enhanced strength and stability. Our economy has continued to grow at a reasonable rate, becoming the 5th largest economy in the world.”

He added, “India is uniquely placed to benefit from an ongoing transformational shift in the global economy.” He acknowledged that the world economy continues to face difficult problems related to inflation, geopolitical unrest, and harsh weather, but he exuded optimism that India is likely to survive external headwinds on the front of economic growth.

The repo rate has been maintained for a third time after the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) made that decision. It has remained constant at 6.5 per cent since the RBI hiked it from 6.25 per cent in February. The repo rate being consistent implied that loan EMIs are most likely unaffected.

Consequently, the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rate remains at 6.25 per cent and the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate and the bank rate stand at 6.75 per cent.

Three RBI employees and three externals make up the MPC’s six members. Shashanka Bhide, Ashima Goyal, and Jayanth R. Varma are the three external members. Governor Shaktikanta Das is joined in the MPC by Rajiv Ranjan, an executive director, and Michael Debabrata Patra, a deputy governor, both from the RBI.

The committee of the central bank unanimously voted to maintain the repo rate at 6.5 per cent at its previous meeting in early June, as most analysts had predicted. The repo rate was halted by the RBI during its meeting in April as well. With the exception of the halt in April, the RBI increased the repo rate by a total of 250 basis points, or 6.5 per cent, since May 2022 in an effort to combat inflation.

Raising interest rates is a tool of monetary policy that frequently works to restrain economic demand, which lowers inflation. The RBI has been instructed by the government to maintain retail inflation at 4% with a 2% tolerance on either side.

Retail inflation in India exceeded the RBI’s 6% objective for three consecutive quarters and only managed to return to the RBI’s safe level in November 2022. If the Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation is outside the 2 to 6% range for three consecutive quarters, the flexible inflation targeting framework considers the RBI to have underperformed in managing price increases.

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has increased its CPI inflation forecast to 5.4 per cent from 5.1 per cent. Governor Shaktikanta  Das expressed concern about the rise in inflation over the past few months and added that it has prompted the central bank to maintain a hawkish stance. He said that after reaching a low of 4.3 per cent in May 2023, inflation rose in June and is expected to surge further during July and August, led by vegetable prices.

Apart from vegetable prices, possible El Nino weather conditions along with global food prices need to be watched closely against the backdrop of a skewed southwest monsoon so far, said Governor Das. He said, “These developments warrant heightened vigilance on the evolving inflation trajectory. The cumulative rate hike of 250 basis points undertaken by the MPC so far is working its way to the economy.”

The interest rate at which the RBI loans money to other banks is known as the repo rate. The repo rate increases are intended to make credit costlier. Banks generally pass on the increased costs to customers and loans become costlier.

The central bank may have decided to again pause the main interest rate due to the ongoing decrease in inflation, which is currently at an 18-month low. Many nations, especially developed ones, have concerns about price increases, but India has done a good job of controlling its trajectory.
