Income Tax raids 10 properties linked to Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji after his arrest in money laundering case

On Tuesday, July 11, the Income Tax department officials conducted raids on properties linked to Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji in Karur. Around ten locations linked to the minister throughout the city were raided by the IT officials.

Senthil Balaji, who served as a minister in the DMK government, was detained on June 14 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a cash-for-jobs scheme. Since then, he has been a patient at Kauvery Hospital, where he underwent coronary bypass surgery.

According to the reports, one of the properties raided by the IT officials is owned by Mani who is Senthil Balaji’s brother.

The raid comes a week after the Madras High Court delivered a split verdict on the Habeas Corpus plea filed by the wife of Senthil Balaji against his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a money-laundering case.

The split verdict was delivered by a division bench of Justices Nisha Banu and D Bharatha Chakravarthy. While Nisha Banu concluded that the habeas corpus plea filed for Balaji’s release is maintainable and therefore be allowed, Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy said he could not agree with the opinion.

Senthil Balaji was removed from the state cabinet by Governor RN Ravi, sparking a political uproar between him and the DMK government, which is led by Chief Minister MK Stalin.

As per the reports however, on the suggestion of the Union Home Ministry, the Governor delayed Senthil Balaji’s discharge. The Governor also informed Chief Minister MK Stalin in a letter that his order had been suspended. It is being said that the Home Ministry asked the Governor to consult the attorney general’s legal counsel before making a decision.

Senthil Balaji would continue serving as a state cabinet minister but will not hold a portfolio, the DMK government announced a few days prior to the Governor’s action.

Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu acquired Senthil Balaji’s ministry for power, while Housing and Urban Development Minister Muthusamy acquired the portfolio for Prohibition and Excise.

Senthil Balaji’s judicial custody has been extended by a Chennai court on July 5 to July 12. The minister appeared through video conference from Kauvery Hospital before Principal Sessions court judge S Alli.

Turkey agrees to unblock Sweden’s NATO membership bid after months of impasse, action against Kurdish groups by Sweden part of deal

On 10th July, Turkey agreed to welcome Sweden into the NATO military alliance fold. An announcement was made by NATO General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg on Twitter at the ongoing Vilnius Summit in Lithuania.

Gen Secy Stoltenberg wrote, “Glad to announce that after the meeting I hosted with @RTErdogan & @SwedishPM, President Erdogan has agreed to forward #Sweden’s accession protocol to the Grand National Assembly ASAP & ensure ratification.”

Stoltenberg called the development a historic step “which makes all NATO allies stronger and safer”. The announcement came following a trilateral meeting between Jens Stoltenberg, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

While Erdogan has agreed to push for the ratification of Sweden’s bid in the Turkish parliament, there is not a definite time period provided for the same.

US President Joe Biden issued a statement following the development and said, “I welcome the statement issued by Türkiye, Sweden and the NATO Secretary General this evening, including the commitment by President Erdoğan to transmit the Accession Protocol for Sweden to Türkiye’s Grand National Assembly for swift ratification.”

The Swedish PM said he was “very happy” and that it was a “good day for Sweden”. Notably, the development comes amid increased tensions between the two countries over the Quran-burning episode in Stockholm.

Terms of Agreement between Sweden and Turkey

As per their agreement, Sweden will present a “roadmap as the basis of its continued fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations towards the full implementation of all elements of the Trilateral Memorandum”. Sweden reiterated that it will not provide support to YPG/PYD, and the organisation described as FETÖ (Fethullahist Terrorist Organization) in Turkey .

Both Sweden and Turkey agreed that counter-terrorism cooperation is a long-term effort, which will continue beyond Sweden’s accession to NATO.

Sweden and Turkey have also agreed to step up economic cooperation, through the Turkey -Sweden Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO). Both Turkey and Sweden will look to maximise opportunities to increase bilateral trade and investments.

On this basis, as per the agreement, Turkey will transmit the Accession Protocol for Sweden to the Grand National Assembly, and work closely with the Assembly to ensure ratification.

Why was Erdogan reluctant to approve Sweden’s bid to join NATO?

NATO is a military alliance of countries in Europe and North America consisting of 31 member states, all of whom are required to approve for membership of a new nation.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Sweden applied for NATO membership in 2022 which was blocked by Turkey and Hungary.

One of the points of contention between Turkey and Sweden was the arms embargo by the latter on the former after Turkey invaded Syria in 2019. This was resolved in an agreement signed between the two in 2022 in Madrid that Turkey would lift the veto in exchange for lifting the embargo.

Another stalemate was over the protests against Erdogan’s government by certain groups in Sweden. “This is not only a matter of a law amendment or a constitutional change. What is the job of the police there? They have legal and constitutional rights, they should exercise their rights. The police should prevent these [protests],” Erdogan reportedly said.

Turkey’s foreign minister Hakan Fidan had expressed his concerns following the burning of the Quran outside a mosque in Stockholm. He said that Swedish authorities’ failure to prevent the Quran-burning protests is raising security concerns and questions about Sweden’s credentials for NATO membership.

Erdogan had also sent a give-and-take message calling for Turkey’s EU membership in exchange for Sweden’s NATO membership. Earlier, Turkey had also blocked Finland’s membership attempt and was the last to approve it.

‘Nothing illegal in BBC presenter paying teen for his sexually explicit images’: Young person’s lawyer

On 10th July, the lawyer of the young person whose mother accused a well-known BBC presenter of paying her child in exchange for money said there was nothing wrong in paying the teen for his sexually explicit images, a report in the BBC said. He further claimed that the mother and the young person are estranged.

In a letter sent on behalf of the young person, the lawyer said that “nothing inappropriate or unlawful” took place. He further added that the young person had sent a denial to The Sun before the claims were published.

The young person sent A message via WhatsApp to The Sun on the evening of 7th July claiming that the statement made by the mother to the newspaper was “totally wrong and there was no truth to it”. However, the lawyer added, The Sun decided to publish the “inappropriate article”.

The lawyer wrote, “For the avoidance of doubt, nothing inappropriate or unlawful has taken place between our client and the BBC personality, and the allegations reported in the Sun newspaper are rubbish”. Calling it a breach of privacy, the lawyer criticized both The Sun and BBC for not contacting his client. He said, “Nobody from the Sun newspaper appears to have made any attempt to contact our client prior to the publication of the allegations on Friday 6th July”.

The Sun rubbishes lawyer’s claims

Rubbishing the lawyer’s claims, The Sun said that the paper published the story about two “very concerned parents who made a complaint to the BBC about the behavior of a presenter and the welfare of their child”, and the media house did not act upon the complaint.

BBC has claimed to be unaware of the young person’s identity and said they have not talked directly to him so far.

Reportedly, the stepfather of the young person approached the police to file a complaint, but the police refused to act, saying “they could not do anything as they said it wasn’t illegal”. Following the “body of evidence” submitted to the BBC last week, the media house has suspended the presenter, who is yet to be identified. Furthermore, the police got involved in the matter, and the Metropolitan Police is now “assessing” the information it received from the BBC. However, there is no formal investigation into the matter from the police.

The case of 35,000 GBP to a young person by a BBC presenter for sexually explicit images

On 8th July, The Sun published the shocking story of an unnamed BBC presenter who allegedly paid a teen 35,000 Pounds over a period of three years for sexually explicit images. The publication cited the victim’s mother’s version while publishing the story against the BBC presenter.

On 10th July, it was reported that the TV representative, who was identified as a male staffer of BBC, called the young person and asked, “What have you done?” in panic. The BBC presenter called the young man twice after the allegations were published in the publication. The report adds that the BBC ‘star’ asked the victim to drop their complaint or stop the ongoing investigation.

BBC confirmed the reports that it had known about the complaint way back in May this year. However, the state-run British Broadcaster claimed that the new allegations were of a “different nature”. It added that it had suspended the male staffer accused of these wrongdoings.

Tamil Nadu: Police arrest stunt master Kanal Kannan over social media post of a Christian priest dancing with a girl

On 10th July, Nagercoil Cyber Crime branch police arrested popular Tamil cinema stunt master Kanal Kannan over a social media post where a priest was seen dancing with a woman. Kannan, who is state president of the popular Hindu organization Hindu Munnani and leads its Art and Literature Wing, has worked with several leading stars of the industry, including Superstar Rajinikanth and Thalapathy Vijay.

Kannan published the social media post in question on 18th June. A case was registered against him on 1st July.

The video Kannan shared had a Tamil song in the background. In the caption that was written in Tamil, Kannan said, “This is the culture of the foreign religions”. Soon after the post was published, a man identified as Austin Bennett, who happens to be a member of DMK IT wing from the Thittuvilai area of Kanyakumari district, filed a complaint at the Nagercoil crime branch against Kannan. Based on his complaint, an FIR was filed under relevant sections against the stunt master.

In his complaint, Bennet claimed the video was manipulated. He further added that the tweet was published with an ulterior motive to tarnish the image of Christianity and trigger hatred between different faiths.

Police issued a summons to Kannan to appear before the police to participate in the inquiry. At around 10 AM on 10th July, Kannan went to the Nagercoil Cyber-crime branch police station. During questioning, Kannan asked if he could leave for lunch as he was diabetic but the police did not allow it. He was served food at the police station. His advocates argued he should be allowed to leave for lunch but police did not pay heed. Later, at around 7 PM, police arrested him and produced him before the district magistrate for judicial remand.

In a social media post, Hindu Munnai condemned the action against Kannan and said they would hold a protest on 11th July at 4 PM against the action taken by the state police.

Speaking to Republic, Hindu Munnani’s state spokesperson Elangovan said, “This is an entirely fabricated case. It was already a viral video that he posted. As an Indian citizen, do we not have the freedom of expression in this country? It’s an entirely motivated case that the DMK government has unleashed upon him.”

He added, “They have been doing the same to all parties and outfits with opposite ideologies. If DMK is so strict, we have given many complaints regarding temples, idols, etc. But they have taken no action upon any of these. Why is this kind of attitude only upon the Hindus in this state? We strictly condemn this arrest”.

Delhi: Raj Kumar brutally stabbed to death by Muslim girlfriend’s family, Ashfaq and Meraj arrested

In Delhi’s Zakira region, a 20-year-old man identified as Raj Kumar was murdered by family members of a girl for having an interfaith relationship with the latter, reports Times of India. The Police investigated the case and checked the CCTV footage before arresting two persons identified as Ashfaq and Meraj.

According to the Times of India report, the incident is said to have happened in the Zakira region of Delhi on July 2. The accused persons stabbed the victim more than a dozen times and also slit his throat. The victim is said to have died on the spot. However, the murder case remained unsolved for days as the victim could not be identified. Later the police investigated the CCTV cameras installed in the locality and activated their networks, which gave them clues, based on which, the identity of the accused persons was confirmed.

According to DCP (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi, police discovered a man’s body next to a park in Inderlok, north of Delhi on July 3. The body, which was buried in the bushes, appeared to be that of a 20–22-year–old male, but neither a phone nor a document had been discovered around him.

Two teams were established to solve the case after an FIR for murder was filed. One team worked to identify the deceased, whereas the other team searched for leads and potential suspects. “Since there was no CCTV installed near the place, both tasks became a challenge. As the time of the incident was not clear, the CCTV footage of all exit and entry points around the scene of the crime was closely checked,” Kalsi said.

Raj Kumar, a native of Araria, Bihar, who once resided in north Delhi, was eventually confirmed to be the deceased. Two suspects’ movements were also seen in a video taken nearby.

The police established their information network and handed out the findings to all units on the ground. Finally, a tip-off revealed the identity of the duo. The suspect admitted to the authorities that Kumar was dating Ashfaq’s close relative. They were upset by this and intended to get rid of him. The accused called the victim to the Shehzada area on the pretext of settling some issues on July 2, where they brutally hacked him to death.

The DCP stated that the accused “were aware that Kumar rarely visited his hometown and that there would be no one to report if he went missing and the body would remain unidentified.”

Two knives that were used in the crime have also been found. Police stated that they also discovered the accused’s blood-stained garments.

The widespread issue of Hindus being continuously subjected to religious prejudice and intolerance by their fellow Muslim compatriots has come to light as a result of frequent attacks on Hindu men by the relatives of their Muslim love interests. Several mainstream media organisations and leftist portals undertake conscious efforts to paint such incidents as stray incidents and not as hate crimes against Hindus, thereby whitewashing the wrongdoing committed by the Muslim perpetrators. In 2020, OpIndia published an article in which we catalogued 20 incidents of Muslim families assaulting, killing or actively participating in eliminating Hindu men who dared to fall in love with Muslim women.

Manipur: 11 Myanmar nationals with bullet and explosive injuries held in the violence-hit Churachandpur

On 10th July, Manipur police detained 11 Myanmar nationals in the district of Churachandpur for entering India without valid documents. All of the detained Myanmar nationals are from Tomu town, located in Northeastern Myanmar, which shares the border with Manipur on the north. They were undergoing medical treatment at the district hospital in Churachandpur for bullet and explosive injuries.

On 16th June, the Officer-in-Charge of Churachandpur police station received a report about the presence of Myanmar nationals at the district hospital. The causes of injuries were not mentioned in the report. Upon inquiry, the police found that 11 Myanmar nationals entered India via Manipur without valid documents. They were detained on Monday. By the time this report was published, as of them were in police custody.

According to The Frontier Manipur, medical documents dated 28th June showed that at least five Myanmar nationals received treatment at the district hospital. They were identified as Thargayi (admitted on 15th June to 28th June), Khaipi (admitted on 15th June), Lulminlal (admitted on 15th June), Konam (admitted on 17th June) and Loky (admitted on 17th June). Three other Myanmar nationals were admitted to the same hospital on 20th April. They were identified as Awngphyowai, Ngamboi and David Thetpaing.

Five of the admitted Myanmar nationals were admitted in June. As per the IFP report, there is a possibility they were injured in Manipur during the ongoing violence that was reported in Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts.

The investigation into the matter is underway, and the police are asserting the exact reasons behind their injuries and how they managed to enter India without valid documents. Illegal immigrants from Myanmar settling in Manipur and engaging in illicit farming of narcotics has been one of the reasons behind the violence.

The Manipur Violence

Manipur has been burning amid conflict between the two ethnic groups, Meiteis and Kukis. Tensions flared up on May 3 following a ‘Tribal solidarity march’ which was organized against the Meitei community seeking ST status.

Meiteis account for the majority of the Manipur population, whereas Nagas and Kukis account for about 40% of the population. About 130 people have been killed in the clash and several have been displaced after their houses were torched and razed.

Ban on meat and liquor shops along the route, security through CCTVs and drones, Gangajal at Police stations: UP gears up to welcome Kanwariyas

Just like every year, lakhs of devotees have embarked on the religious Kanwar Yatra in the auspicious month of Sawan to secure Gangajal and give their devotional offering to Bhagwan Mahadev.

Apart from Haridwar, these kanwariyas carry water from Gaumukh and Gangotri. Similarly, in Sultanganj of Bihar, Prayagraj of UP, Ayodhya, and Varanasi, Kanwariyas offer Gangajal to Mahadev. From Uttarakhand to Delhi, Uttar Pradesh to Jharkhand, special arrangements have been made for the devotees of Lord Shiva in these states.

During the Kanwar yatra, UP CM Yogi Adityanath had asked the administration to make arrangements while respecting the belief of devotees. For this, he also ordered to prohibit the selling of meat on roads from where the Yatra will pass. Additionally, he asked the administration to focus on cleanliness and proper working of street lights.

On the 28th of June, UP CM said, “Respecting the belief of devotees, meat should not be allowed to be sold in the open on the Kanwar route. The route should remain clean and sanitised. There should be provision for streetlights. Since the weather is hot, arrangements for drinking water should also be made.”

On the 7th of July, the officials in Noida asked the meet shop owners to keep their shops closed during the Kanwar Yatra. According to the officials, the decision has been taken to maintain peace between the two communities.

Noida Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Harish Chander stated that such orders are usually enforced during the month of Sawan when the Kanwar Yatra takes place. However, he stated that these directions have been issued only for shops that fall on the pilgrimage route.

Elaborate security measures in place in Ghaziabad

Kanwariyas will get special focus and advanced security in Ghaziabad. The Ghaziabad Police has made tight security arrangements for this year’s Yatra. Around 1000 CCTV cameras and 25 drones have been reportedly deployed on seven roads of Ghaziabad.

Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra highlighted that elaborate security procedure has been chalked out for this year’s Kanwar Yatra. He stressed that there is adequate preparation to deal with any eventuality.

He added that Armed police personnel have been deployed at 80 watch towers to keep a strict vigil around the clock. Additionally, 25 drones will also be deployed to closely monitor the activities of any potential unruly elements.

Earlier, on the 4th of July, the Ghaziabad traffic police announced that it has procured 1,000 litres of Gangajal from Haridwar for the devotees participating in the pilgrimage.

Additional DCP (Traffic) in Ghaziabad, Ramanand Kushwaha said, “The month of Shravan starts on July 4, during which a large number of Shiva devotees carry ‘Gangajal’ from Haridwar to Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, and border districts through Ghaziabad. Many times, the water falls, and it is considered impure when it touches the ground. In view of this, the traffic police sent a team to Haridwar ‘Har Ki Pauri’ and brought a total of 1,000 litres of ‘Gangajal’. It would be distributed at all police stations to help the devotees.”

Apart from security arrangements and respecting the beliefs of devotees, society at large has made arrangements that no Kanwariya go on an empty stomach. For this, ashrams, mandirs, and common people have planned Bhandaras on the route of the Kanwar Yatra.

According to some estimates, this year around 5 crore devotees are said to take part in the Kanwar Yatra.

Anti-Hindu Delhi riots: Police arrest Mohd Khalid, brother of Mohd Ayaz, one of the main conspirators of Head Constable Ratan Lal’s brutal murder

On July 10, Monday, the Delhi police said that they have arrested a man near the Myanmar-India border over his involvement in the murder of Head Constable Ratan Lal during the anti-Hindu Delhi Riots of 2020. The accused has been identified as Mohammad Khalid, a resident of Chand Bagh in the Karawal Nagar Area.

Mohammad Khalid is the brother of Mohammad Ayaz, one of the main conspirators of the murder of Head Constable Ratan Lal. Ayaz was arrested by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell on June 21 this year.

Sharing the news of the arrest, Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Singh Yadav said, “A tip-off was received that Khalid was hiding in Manipur. He was arrested near the Myanmar-India border.”

During questioning, the suspect admitted that he took part in the Chand Bagh anti-CAA/NRC rally in 2020 with his older brother Mohammad Ayaz and several friends. At a private meeting held at his home, it was resolved by everybody present to bring sticks and iron rods to block the roads, Yadav said.

As discussed, the road leading to the Jafrabad Metro Station was blocked by Muslim rioters. Then, a huge mob gathered at the Chand Bagh protest site and attempted to block the main Wazirabad road. Lal was killed and numerous other police officers were hurt when Khalid, his brother Ayaz, and other protesters started throwing stones at the police team when it attempted to stop them.

Notably, only last month, Delhi Police’s Special Cell arrested Mohammed Ayaz. Police had then said that as Ayaz was absconding, the police had kept a close watch on the close contacts of Khalid and Ayaz. The technical and manual surveillance revealed they kept changing their hideouts. At one point, they were spotted in Manipur, where efforts were made to arrest them. The Police noted Ayaz’s location in Bengaluru in the first week of June 2023 and arrested him.

Ratan Lal Murder

A crazed Muslim mob mercilessly lynched Ratan Lal while he was trying to do his duty on the main Wazirabad Road, Chand Bagh. The 42-year-old police officer lived with his family in Amrit Vihar, Burari, Delhi.

Lal belonged to Fathepur Tihwali village in Rajasthan’s Sikar district. His wife and three children survive Lal. The Sikar resident had joined the Delhi Police in the constable post in 1998. He married a Jaipur resident in 2004. Ratan Lal was posted at Gokulpuri Police Station. He lived with his family in a house in Delhi’s Burari area.

A mob attacked police officers stationed in Maujpur, Delhi’s North-East area, on February 24, 2020. Ratan Lal died from a bullet wound, according to the autopsy report. A video surfaced in March 2020 where a violent mob of rioters can be seen attacking the Delhi Police officers with stones and sticks.

The Special Investigation Team of Delhi Police had in June 2020 filed a 1,100-page charge sheet in the case of the murder of Ratan Lal and deadly attacks by rioters on IPS Amit Sharma and IPS Anuj Kumar. At least 17 accused had been named in the charge sheet. The police stated that the riots were engineered in Delhi through a conspiracy to malign the country’s image.
