Manipur violence: Situation limps back to normalcy as curfew relaxed in Churachandpur district, CM appeals for peace

On May 7, the administration relaxed the curfew in the violence-hit Churachandpur district of Manipur for three hours. Army drones and helicopters deployed in the area continued to conduct surveillance to maintain law and order, especially along the border with Myanmar. Chief Minister Biren Singh held an all-party meeting on Saturday evening to resolve the unrest. He appealed for peace in the state and encouraged all citizens to avoid any action that may lead to violence or instability.

Following the all-party meeting, CM Singh also held a video conference with para-military forces, state police and senior government officials to take stock of the on-ground operations. He said, “The entire team is working round the clock to ensure that peace prevails in the state.” He added, “The situation is much better today. No major incidents of violence were seen in the past 24 hours; only a few small clashes and instances of tension caused by rumours.”

Speaking to TOI, Singh said that the administration’s outreach under the supervision of the Union Home Ministry and HM Amit Shah helped control violence. He said, “They [Manipur administration] have been conveying our peace appeals to the people. Peace committees have been activated in all districts. While the police and security forces are doing the firefighting, a parallel dialogue is being undertaken with the community and Church leaders as an outreach to the people to maintain calm. This has been instrumental in normalising the situation.” Notably, HM Shah recently cancelled his election programs in Karnataka to monitor the situation in Manipur.

Furthermore, meetings were held between the CM and the representatives of the civil society organisations of both Kukis and Meities. He appealed to them to help the state authorities maintain peace and restore normalcy. The organisations agreed to allow safe passage of people stuck in the violent hit areas or trapped in hostage-like situations. Around 20,000 people have been evacuated, including Meiteis settled in the hills and Kukis settled in Imphal Valley.

Minor incidents of violence were reported in some areas, but overall, the situation remained under the control of the security forces. There are 14 companies of central forces deployed across the state. The centre has sent 20 more companies to ensure there is law and order in the state.

CRPF arrested around 30 rioters who allegedly triggered various incidents of violence in the state. As the violence was subsequently curbed across the state, the security agencies shifted their focus to investigate and identify the triggers and miscreants behind the violence. CRPF Director General said the security agencies are looking if the violence was staged.

Officials familiar with the matter said that insurgents are held up in thick forests along the border, which could create a law and order situation in the state.

The Manipur violence

One of the major factors that triggered the violence in the state of Manipur was the demand by the Meities to get included under Scheduled Tribes (ST). These are mostly Hindus settled in Imphal Valley. Kuki tribals, on the other hand, who are Christians, opposed the demand as they claimed it would put pressure on government benefits and schemes. Furthermore, Meities have pointed out that the illegal immigrants coming from Myanmar and settling in the hills posing as Tribals threaten the state’s demographics.

Recently, BJP MLA Dinganglung Gangmei filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the orders passed by the Manipur High Court that directed the state to include the Meitei community in the ST list. Gangmei said in the petition that the order was “entirely illegal” and sought to be set quashed. Manipur Tribal Forum has also approached the Supreme Court claiming that BJP is supporting violence in the state.

OpIndia did a detailed report on the violence in Manipur that can be read here. All the details and updates of the violence can be found here.

Rajasthan: Ajmer Police arrest Salman Khan for kidnapping a 14-year-old girl from Hanumangarh district

On Saturday, May 6, Ajmer Police rescued a 14-year-old girl who was kidnapped by the accused identified as Salman Khan. The accused was arrested by the police with the help of an auto rickshaw driver Zakir Hussein. Accused Salman Khan, who was arrested by Ajmer Police, was later handed over to Hanumangarh Police. Another accused, Aman Khan was also arrested.

Reportedly, the matter pertains to the Dabali Rathan village in Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan wherein the accused Salman Khan abducted a minor girl and fled. Following this, the family members of the girl lodged a complaint and the locals shut the village market down in protest.  Subsequently, the police formed 10 to 12 teams comprising over 100 police personnel to nab the accused and recover the minor girl.

The Hanumangarh SP told the Ajmer SP that the accused may be present in Ajmer. Following this, the police circulated the picture of the accused Salman among auto rickshaw drivers and asked them to inform the police if they get any information about the accused or the abducted girl.

At around 3 am on Saturday, an auto rickshaw driver named Zakir Hussein informed the police that a youth has stepped down from a bus along with a young girl. He said that the youth is asking the auto-rickshaw drivers if he can get a room on rent at a hotel for a month. Zakir also told the police that he has asked the youth to wait at the bus stand till he makes arrangements for a hotel room. Acting upon the auto-rickshaw driver’s information, a police team arrived at the bus stand and arrested the accused, and rescued the girl.

Hadiya’s father Ashokan K. M. welcomes the release of The Kerala Story, reveals that his daughter is still under the control of a PFI activist

The Kerala Story which was released on May 5 has once again brought attention to the Shafin Jahan vs. Ashokan K. M. case popularly known as the Hadiya case. Ashokan K. M.’s daughter Hadiya, formerly known as Akhila, a homoeopathic medical student, was reportedly indoctrinated and converted to Islam. She then married a Muslim named Shafin Jahan.

She currently works as a homoeopathic physician in Kottakkal, Malappuram district, five years after a Supreme Court decision restored her right to convert to Islam and marry Shafin Jahan. Her father said that Hadiya has given divorce papers to her husband, but she is still under the influence of A.S. Zainaba, a PFI activist who acted as her guardian after she left her house.

The New Indian Express talked to Ashokan K. M. who disclosed, “Shafin left her immediately after the Supreme Court ruled in his favour. I have never met him since 2018. Whenever I visited her, she was surrounded by Zainaba and her people who never allowed me to talk to her in private.”

“The last visit was after the raids on PFI leaders’ houses. Though she was alone, she was trembling with fear. I asked her the reason, but she didn’t reply and she refused to return home,” he further unveiled.

He was glad to see The Kerala Files come out and felt that such films can educate girls and their parents about the deceitful tactics of conversion schemes. He called on religious bodies to train counsellors and use them to teach values to kids so they can avoid falling victim to rackets that drive them away from their parents.

He intended to approach the court for permission to have A.S. Zainaba who boasted of converting 5,000 women to get investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). According to him, it will aid in future efforts to reduce similar crimes.

He asserted that politicians who argue about the basic rights of young women being enticed by Muslim men can never comprehend the suffering of families who have lost their children.

Ashokan K. M. was a driver for the Indian Army till he retired voluntarily in 1996, at which point he was hired by the Fort Kochi Defence Court. He used to live off his Army pension and deposit his pay into Hadiya’s account. He also revealed that he is an atheist.

“Yes, I am an atheist, but I never stopped my wife and daughter from visiting temples. I agree that the lack of spirituality made it easy for the extremists to indoctrinate and convert Akhila. But Christian girls who grow in faith are also being trapped,” he remarked. He mentioned that after converting to Islam Hadiya once told him that she wanted to travel to Syria and pasture goats there.

He had contended before the Supreme Court that it was his attempts that had kept her from being carted into Syrian territory under the authority of extremists.

He speaks to his daughter over the phone but she is still adamant about staying away. He professed that she sought to have his property registered in her name and that he would give it to her if she renounces Islam and returns home.

If not, he aimed to donate it to a charitable organisation. He is concerned because when Hadiya’s mother, Ponnamma, suffered a heart attack in 2019, the former expressed no interest in visiting her. He questions why he should leave his possessions to someone whose religion is more important to her than her parents.

Background of the Hadiya Case

In 2016 Hadiya was reported missing by her father who had filed a police case followed by a habeas corpus petition in the Kerala High Court to trace her. She had left her home for college on January 6 of the same year, dressed in a hijab and was staying with A.S. Zainaba, the president of the National Women’s Front (NWF), the female wing of the outlawed Popular Front of India (PFI). She had embraced Islam and married Shafin Jahan who was an active member of the PFI-affiliated Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI). Her family charged that she was brainwashed and married against her will.

She mentioned the circumstances surrounding her leaving and claimed that her father had forbidden her from following Islam.

In May 2017, the marriage was annulled by the High Court of Kerala on the grounds she was a victim of indoctrination and psychological kidnapping, and that their claims of their marriage being arranged through a matrimony website were bogus. The court then handed over her custody to her father, arguing, “As per Indian tradition, the custody of an unmarried daughter is with the parents, until she is properly married.”

Her husband moved to the Supreme Court and in November 2017, the court directed Hadiya to resume her internship, and that she was free to meet whomever she wanted. In March 2018, the Supreme Court restored the marriage, 10 months after the Kerala High Court annulled it.

The Kerala Story is a multilingual movie directed by Sudipto Sen, produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and features Adah Sharma in the lead role. Its plot follows the story of a group of women from Kerala who converted to Islam, married Muslim men and joined the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

‘Will hang myself even if a single allegation is proved’: Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on the wrestlers’ protest at Jantar Mantar

On Sunday, 7th May 2023, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the president of the Indian Wrestling Federation and a BJP member, said that even if a single accusation made against him by a section of wrestlers is found to be true, he will hang himself. He made this remark while speaking to the media over the ongoing wrestlers’ protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

India’s ace wrestlers including Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and Bajrang Punia have levelled allegations of sexual harassment of female wrestlers against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The wrestlers are protesting against him at Jantar Mantar demanding that the BJP MP be sacked from the post of the WFI chief.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said, “Even if a single accusation against me is proven to be true, I will hang myself. I cannot openly talk about all these things as the matter is under consideration by the Delhi police. My family is associated with wrestling for a long time. My uncles were also attached to the sport. I had told them (protestors) on the very first day that if you have any video, or if I have called any of the players, or if they have any witnesses to prove their allegations, they should bring them out.”

He further said, “If you don’t trust me, then you may ask any male or female wrestler in your acquaintance or neighbourhood. Ask them – if this Brij Bhushan Singh is actually a Ravan. Ask them if he has a bad and criminal character. Ask any wrestlers barring these few wrestlers who may be 2, 4, 6, or 10 in number at max. Ask the wrestlers other than these few wrestlers. Ask them what have I done for Indian Wrestling in the last 11 years.”

Singh also added that he cannot openly discuss all issues since the matter is being probed by the Delhi Police and dared the aggrieved wrestlers to produce evidence corroborating the allegations.

Some of the best wrestlers in India have accused Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment, and Singh had previously stated that he would step down as president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) if his party asked it. For more than ten days, Indian wrestlers have been demonstrating at Jantar Mantar.

On Sunday, May 7, Khap panchayat leaders from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana are gathering at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to show solidarity with the protesting wrestlers. Delhi Police has stepped up security, both at the sit-in and the bordering areas of the national capital.

The wrestlers are hoping Khap Mahapanchayat will be massively successful and boost their fight against Singh. The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU-Tikait) have also extended support to the wrestlers.

We will not let India hold a meeting in Srinagar: New terror group ‘Jabbaaz Force’ emerges in Pakistan, warns India ahead of G20 meeting in J&K

Pakistan has reportedly come up with a new nefarious plan to create trouble for India. A new terror outfit named Jabbaaz Force has been launched in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), weeks before India conducts a G20 meet in Kashmir. The huge revelation was made by Pakistani activist Amjad Ayub Mirza. He is an author and human rights activist who hails from Mirpur in PoK. He currently lives in exile in the United Kindom.

The activist informed, “Just as the Pakistani Foreign Minister was planning to fly to Goa in India to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting, Pakistan has engineered a new terrorist organisation which is now being launched in Pakistani-occupied Jammu and Kashmir by the name of Jabbaaz Force.”

“Now, Jabbaaz Force is also the name of a (Pakistani) paramilitary force,” he added. The new terror organisation has similarities with the Janbaz Force which is a component of the Pakistan military force.

Jabbaaz Force is led by a Pakistani army veteran who also participated in the 1998 Kargil war between the two countries.

The head of the new organisation, Shehzad Ahmed, has warned India against hosting the G20 meetings in Jammu and Kashmir. “The Prime Minister of India has no right to hold the G20 meeting in Srinagar. We will not let India hold a meeting in Srinagar. Those who cooperate with us, we will commend them,” he declared.

He has allegedly built a Jihadi base camp in Poonch where five Rashtriya Rifles soldiers were recently martyred and another suffered serious injuries in a ghastly assault.

Amjad Ayub Mirza also exposed Pakistan’s Foreign Minister and stated, “My question to Mr Bilawal Bhutto is ‘sharam tumko magar nahi aati,’ you don’t feel ashamed of yourself that you are representing a country that is infiltrating terrorism into Jammu and Kashmir.”

“How can you have the courage to sit among these foreign ministers of such big countries, experienced foreign ministers and face them with your fake smile just to show that you are in a constant state of denial,” he questioned.

Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar also launched a scathing attack on India’s hostile neighbour in Goa and remarked that terrorists and their victims cannot sit together. He also took a dig at Pakistan’s severe economic crisis and commented that the country’s credibility is eroding faster than its foreign exchange reserves.

Notably, Pakistan continues to nurture animosity towards India and support terrorism with the intention of harming the country while suffering a growing number of grave problems, including an unparalleled economic collapse and significant political instability.

UP: ‘Hindu Bharat Chhodo’ slogans written on walls of a house in Banda, FIR registered

In the Kotwali Nagar area in the Banda district of Uttar Pradesh, some walls of a Hindu family’s house were defaced with slogans like “Hindu Bharat Chhodo” (Hindus leave India) in a bid to disrupt communal harmony. Taking cognizance of the matter on May 6, Banda Police registered a case and launched an investigation. Police are trying to identify the miscreants involved in this act. It is being said that the incident took place in a Muslim-majority area that falls under the Mardan Naka police station.

According to media reports, the slogans were spotted scribbled on the wall of one Ramlal Prajapati’s house and the adjoining toilet on Saturday. ‘Hindu leave India’ and ‘Hindu leave the house’ were inscribed on it. People from the neighborhood soon began to gather there. Police also arrived at the scene after receiving information about the incident. Following this the police removed the inflammatory slogans scribbled on the wall.

Upon learning about the incident, several Hindu rights activists also arrived at the spot and demanded that an FIR be registered and strict action be taken. They also sought police protection for the Hindus residing in the locality. Following this, the police registered an FIR against unidentified persons and initiated a probe.

Speaking about the incident, Lakshmi Niwas Mishra, Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) Banda, stated that police officers arrived on the scene and filed an FIR. He further stated that stern action will be taken once the perpetrators of the incident are identified.

‘Objectionable film’ plays on CCTV monitor at SP leader ST Hasan’s house, he alleges govt is spying on him through his TV using Pegasus

Controversial leader and Samajwadi Party (SP) MP from Muradabad, ST Hasan has accused the government of spying on opposition leaders after an ‘objectionable film’ started playing on a CCTV monitor installed at his residence. The incident took place at his house in Moradabad, as alleged by the SP leader.

As per an ABP News report, Hasan claimed that on Saturday, “Suddenly an ‘objectionable film’ which cannot be watched with the family started playing on the CCTV monitor here, I tried to stop it, don’t know where the technology is heading. This TV you are seeing is also being monitored from somewhere else.”

ST Hasan alleged that the government is conducting espionage on opposition leaders using Pegasus. He also alleged that the government did not cooperate in the judicial inquiry into the Pegasus issue.

According to the SP MP, it has also come out that Pegasus is such a technology that “even smart TVs can spy on you, and that you should sleep with the internet turned off or else your room will be filmed.” He voiced doubt that opposition leaders are being spied on and that an investigation should be conducted.

The Samajwadi Party MP further alleged that the government is tapping phone calls of opposition leaders and spying through Pegasus spying software in the name of nationalism. He added that Judicial Committee in its report stated that the government did not cooperate in the investigation. It is pertinent to recall here that in August last year, the Supreme Court had said that there was no conclusive evidence to back the claim that the Indian government was using the Pegasus spyware to snoop on people.

It is pertinent to note that ST Hasan has often been in controversies over outrageous remarks. In the year 2021, Hasan alleged that deaths due to the coronavirus outbreak are happening because the BJP government at the centre has been messing with the Islamic Sharia law during the 7 years of its rule. He claimed that two cyclones and covid deaths are the signs of the injustices committed by the BJP government against Muslims.

Moreover, he had earlier compared actresses to prostitutes while defending actor Zaira Wasim’s decision to quit the film industry because it ‘interfered with her faith’.

In October 2019, Samajwadi Party (SP) MP ST Hasan compared the Indian parliament to a religious congregation as he said that the environment inside the Parliament is such that he felt parliament was a religious group rather than a governing body.

Khap panchayat leaders and farmer unions head to Delhi, will join wrestlers’ protest at Jantar Mantar

The wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat, have been protesting against the President of the Wrestling Federation of India Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, claiming he sexually harassed female wrestlers. They are demanding the resignation and arrest of Singh.

The wrestlers are hoping Khap Mahapanchayat will be massively successful and boost their fight against Singh. The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU-Tikait) have also extended support to the wrestlers. As per an Indian Express report, farmer unions have threatened to lay siege to Delhi if action is not taken against Singh in a week’s time.

BKU leader Rakesh Tikait, the leader during farmer protests, would also join the protests. He has released a video statement saying he would join Khap leaders at the protest site for Mahapanchayat to decide the direction of the protests. Before leaving for the protest site, Tikait said, “They (protesting wrestlers) have our full support. We will decide today (on the future course of action). Arrest (of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh) must be done when FIR has been registered.”

Sarv Khap General Secretary Subhash Baliyan said that around a dozen Khap panchayats were scheduled to join the protests to support the wrestlers. They would remain at the protest site until their demands were fulfilled.

The police have deployed extra force to maintain law and order in the area. All zones close to Jantar Mantar have been cordoned off. Reports suggest that there is no particular security protocol for the candlelight march for which Bajrang Punia has urged the public to join to show support for the wrestlers.

In a statement, Vinesh Phogat requested protesters to maintain peace and urged police not to stop the protesters. Sakshi Malik said in her statement she was yet to decide the next course of action, and her lawyers were working on the plan. She further said Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had not approached them yet. She said, “He already knows our demands, so it doesn’t make sense to meet him again. If he wants to talk to us, we will definitely talk.”

According to PTI, a group of farmers who tried to enter Delhi to join protests were stopped by Delhi Police at the Tikri border.

In a statement, a farmer leader said, “Our protest (to support wrestlers) is for one day (today). If the government doesn’t find a solution, we will consider what to do next.”

Many members of the Kirti Kisan Union reached Jantar Mantar and joined the protest against Singh.

Meanwhile, Singh released a video statement and said he would hang himself if a single allegation against him was proven.

Meanwhile, the Home Minister of Haryana Anil Vij also extended support to the protesting wrestlers. He said, “This entire matter is now being addressed at the highest level. Since I have also been a sports minister, my sympathies and support are with the protesting wrestlers. If they want me to meditate and talk to the government, I am willing to do so.”

In a statement, Anurag Thakur said the police were conducting an unbiased investigation into the matter. He said, “A demand had been put forward to form a committee and a panel was constituted. Two FIRs have also been registered by Delhi Police and Supreme Court also gave its verdict. Delhi Police is conducting a fair investigation.” He further added free and fair elections of the WFI were also being taken into consideration and Indian Olympic Association was working towards it.

Wrestler protest

On April 23, ace wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and Bajrang Punia launched a second round of protests against Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, alleging he sexually harassed hundreds of female wrestlers. The first round of protests took place in January this year. It was called off after Sports Minister Anurag Thakur formed a committee to investigate the matter. Following the fresh wrestlers’ protest, Delhi Police filed FIRs against Singh based on the complaints of seven athletes.
