Arvind Kejriwal had promised to form govt in Gujarat, his AAP earns the tag of Congress voter-cutter at the end

Though the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) may have performed poorly in the Gujarat assembly elections, before the elections the party had somehow tried to create an atmosphere that it was coming to power in Gujarat. However, mainstream media and social media also contributed a lot rather than just the self-proclaimed cleanest political party’s political theatrics.

But if the figures are seen on the day of the result, then the atmosphere, publicity, advertisements, and other paraphernalia provide a quantitative metric about how the party had fared in the elections. This is what has happened with the Aam Aadmi Party. The party had come with dreams of winning the Gujarat elections and is going with a tag of the vote-cutter taking away vote share from the Congress.

Right from the beginning of the vote counting, AAP was restricted to single-digit numbers. The leads for AAP never exceeded 8 seats at any point of time during the vote counting. Finally, AAP had to settle with 5 seats.

It was not yet decided when the Gujarat assembly elections would be held, at the time when AAP started campaigning. From party convener Arvind Kejriwal to other party leaders, like Manish Sisodia, Bhagwant Mann, and Raghav Chadha frequently came to Gujarat. However, Manish Sisodia’s name was revealed in the liquor scandal soon after the AAP started making efforts for the Gujarat assembly elections.

The party chief Arvind Kejriwal held a lot of meetings, did a lot of press conferences, and met people. He also made various promises and presented his party as the third option. Be it the announcement of allowances for women and youth, or free electricity and water, the Aam Aadmi Party continued to appear in the media and social media.

Kejriwal also played the Hindutva card

In a state like Gujarat, if a party aims to get respectable numbers, it must not offend Hindus. Knowing this, Kejriwal also made many attempts to create an image of Hindutva. Kejriwal who had once said, ‘can my Ram stay in a temple made by demolishing someone’s mosque’, started promising Ayodhya pilgrimage for elderly citizens and also started talking about ‘Krishna and Kansa’. As if this was not enough, he went on to talk about printing pictures of Lord Ganesha and goddess Lakshmi on currency notes.

However, in the end, all this did not work and the party didn’t perform well. While party candidates lost deposits in many seats, AAP gained nothing even where the party was expecting a few good performances. BJP single-handedly dominated the elections by winning a record-breaking 156 seats in the state. The people of Gujarat rejected AAP and bolstered their trust in the saffron party only to take the 27-year-old BJP rule in the state ahead to complete its three decades.

Why didn’t people have faith in the Aam Aadmi Party?

The Aam Aadmi Party tried very hard to make itself a third option, but the reason why it did not succeed is that it made promises to the people, but could not explain how they would fulfil the promises. On the other hand, during this period, news of scams continued to come out from Delhi where the Aam Aadmi Party is in power, which also made people rethink this self-proclaimed third option.

The Aam Aadmi Party did not even have workers who could work hard from village to village and go to the people and ask for votes. Sharing posts in support of the party on social media does not win the election. It has to come to the ground to win the election. The reason why the Aam Aadmi Party did not show up in most of the seats is that the lack of workers who can work at the ground level there hurt the party.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) relied majorly on the media and social media in this election. But one also has to get on the ground to woo the voters. The Aam Aadmi Party appeared very little on the ground. Even where it appeared, AAP could not explain to the people why they should reject the BJP and Congress and choose the Aam Aadmi Party.

AAP could snatch Congress seats but it miserably failed to do so

Also, most of the seats were those where the fight was between the BJP and Congress. This was the situation, especially in rural areas. In these circumstances, the Aam Aadmi Party could not make a place as a third party. In many seats, it happened that there was a fight between the candidates of the BJP and the Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party was thrown out of it.

Social equations also play a big role in elections. The Aam Aadmi Party benefited from this in the Surat Municipal Corporation elections and the party won 27 seats. This time too, the party focussed more on Surat and Saurashtra, where the Patidar community’s agitation for a reserved quota had the biggest impact in 2017, and in most of these areas, the Congress snatched seats and brought the BJP below 100.

The Aam Aadmi Party’s calculation was to snatch these seats from the Congress and for this, they also tried to set up social equations.

The party has fielded Alpesh Kathiria, who became known as PAAS, in Varachha. Varachha is considered to be a Patidar-majority area. Apart from this, in Katargam, Olpad, etc., it also gave tickets to Gopal Italia and Dharmik Malaviya, who were once the face of the Patidar movement. The party also campaigned a lot in these seats but could gain nothing here too.

On the other hand, the party proved to be a breaker of the Congress vote. Because the BJP supporter votes remained safe and on this side, there was a breakdown in the Votes of the Congress.

The reason for this is that in 2017, the atmosphere against the BJP in the Patidar community (and in other societies as well) had completely disappeared by 2022. Hardik Patel and Alpesh Thakor, who were once poster boys of these social movements, joined the BJP, while on the other hand, the Congress also reduced the aggression. The BJP succeeded in turning various communities towards itself in these five years and especially before the elections and its effect was seen in all these seats.

Other challenges that put the party on the backfoot

Apart from this, the Aam Aadmi Party faced many challenges, big and small, during this period. AAP had no way of getting out of it, and at one point the party that talked about education and health had even come to play the caste card. While an old video of Gopal Italia pushed the party on the back foot, the controversy over Kejriwal’s minister attending the conversion ceremony also evoked strong reactions in Gujarat. Apart from this, the involvement of Manish Sisodia in the liquor scam in Delhi or the arrest of another Kejriwal minister Satyendar Jain, as well as the VIP facilities available in the jail, also continued to affect the party.

What is the future of The Aam Aadmi Party?

Many believe that this was the beginning of the Aam Aadmi Party and that in the future (i.e. in the 2027 elections), the party will do well. But in politics, and especially in the context of elections, a period of five years is also considered to be big and important. In 2017, the BJP, which somehow saved the fort, broke all records this time. In 2009, the BJP was seen nowhere, but it won a historic victory in the 2014 general elections on account of Modi’s tremendous popularity and since then he has been in power.

The Aam Aadmi Party does not have a similar organization yet. Besides, the crushing defeat in this election will have a huge impact on its workers. Because the workers were not hoping for victory but for some seats, which they did not get. And who can explain more than Congress what will happen if the workers do not come out?

Joe Biden releases Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout in exchange for basketball player Brittney Griner who was accused of smuggling drugs

0

On Thursday. 8th December 2022, president of the United States Joe Biden shared that the American basketball player Brittney Griner has been released in a prisoner swap with Russia and is on her way back to the USA. Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout was released in exchange for the WNBA star Griner. According to a report by Reuters, the Russian foreign ministry confirmed that the swap took place at an airport in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Addressing reporters at the White House, Joe Biden said, “She’s safe, she’s on a plane, she’s on her way home after months of being unjustly detained in Russia, held under intolerable circumstances and she will arrive within the next 24 hours.” He added, “This is a day we’ve worked toward for a long time. We never stopped pushing for her release. After months of being unjustly detained in Russia, held under intolerable circumstances, Brittney will soon be back in the arms of her loved ones, and she should have been there all along.”

The 32-year-old sportsperson is a player for the Women’s National Basketball Association’s team Phoenix Mercury. She was arrested on February 17 this year on drug smuggling charges at an airport in Moscow. Notwithstanding her statement that Despite her excuse that the cannabis oil discovered in her suitcase was there by ‘mistake’, she was sentenced to nine years in jail in early August and was transferred to a Mordovia republic penal colony in mid-November after having lost her petition.

Negotiations to obtain her release were hampered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24 and the consequent deterioration of relations between Washington and Moscow. The trade was one of the most high-profile and unusual examples of Washington-Moscow collaborations since the Russia-Ukraine war.

Clarifying the situation about another prisoner in Russia, former US Marine Paul Whelan, Biden noted in his address that Whelan’s family “must be experiencing such mixed feelings today.” He said, “This was not a choice of which American to bring home. Sadly, for totally illegitimate reasons, Russia is treating Paul’s case differently than Brittney’s. And while we have not yet succeeded in securing Paul’s release, we are not giving up. We will never give up.”

A US official said that the Russians have made it clear that they would only deal for Griner and not for Whelan because each of their cases had been handled differently by Russia.

Increased support base for BJP shows public anger against dynastic politics is constantly growing: PM Modi after historic victory in Gujarat

PM Narendra Modi addressed party workers from BJP headquarters in Delhi after the party’s historic victory in Gujarat saying that the win is a reflection of the aspirations of new India. “The message is clear that when there is a challenge before the country, the people of the country have faith in the BJP,” said PM Modi, as he thanked the voters in Gujarat for reinstating faith in BJP.

I had told the people of Gujarat that this time Narendra’s record should be broken. I promised that Narendra will work hard so that Bhupendra can break Narendra’s record. Gujarat has broken all records by giving the biggest mandate to the BJP in the history of Gujarat, said PM Modi.

Lauding the people of Gujarat for giving the biggest mandate in the history of Gujarat to the BJP, Modi added that the public support received by the BJP is a manifestation of the ‘youthful thinking’ of the youth of India.

PM Modi hailed the vigilance of voters and appealed to everyone to put the country first in every deed. The Prime Minister added that the “support to BJP shows people’s anger against dynastic politics and corruption is constantly growing”.

Youth of India knows the repercussions of shortcut politics: PM Modi

Modi stated that the youth of the country believe in the BJP’s vision and dedication and have rejected the opposition parties’ ‘jaativadi’ (racist) and ‘parivarvadi’ (dynastic) politics.

PM in his address praised the voters as he said that they know the repercussions of shortcut politics. “We don’t make any announcements focusing on political loss or gain but the vision for the progress of the nation. Now, the country doesn’t accept shortcuts,” said PM Modi

Modi in his address lauded the people of Gujarat saying that they voted for BJP rising above caste, class, community and all kinds of divisions.

Taking a jab at the opposition parties, PM Modi stated “Those who call themselves neutral, who need to be neutral, where they stand, when and how they change colours? And how they play the game, it is very important for the country to know this.”

He added that with this historic victory, the attacks by the opposition on him and the people who have always shown remarkable support for him and the party will only intensify. “The attacks on me and y’all will only increase. We have to increase our tolerance and understanding. We not only have to withstand but continuously move forward in the midst of these oppressions and ‘jumlas’,” he added.

PM Modi in his address did not forget to thank the people of Himachal Pradesh where the party lost to Congress. “I also want to thank the voters of Himachal. The difference between the number of votes for BJP & Congress was less than 1%, which means BJP workers really worked hard, said PM Modi.

As the counting of votes in the Gujarat Assembly elections 2022 came to an end, the BJP, expectedly, won an all-time high seat count of 156 with a vote share of 52.5 per cent, as per data by the Election Commission of India (ECI), securing the seventh term in the state. The party not only broke its own record of gaining the most seats in the 2002 Assembly elections, but it also broke the record set by the Congress’ Madhav Singh Solanki government in the Gujarat Assembly elections in 1985, which won 149 seats.

Celebrations broke out in Gandhinagar as the BJP neared a record-breaking victory in the Gujarat Assembly polls.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and state BJP chief CR Patil exchanged sweets while celebrating the party’s victory. The party workers played musical instruments and danced to celebrate the nearing victory.

Congress won the Himachal Pradesh elections by securing 40 seats in the 68-member house. BJP has got 25 seats and 3 seats went to independents.

0 seats, less than 0.3% vote share: Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM fails miserably in Gujarat Assembly Elections. Read details

The 2022 Gujarat assembly elections have been different in many ways. This is for the first time that a third party other than the BJP and Congress has played an effective role in the Gujarat assembly elections. This time in Gujarat, there was a power struggle between the BJP, Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party. And in 14 seats, AIMIM also tried its luck.

AIMIM had fielded candidates in 14 seats in Gujarat where Muslim voters are in a sizeable majority. Most of these seats are traditionally called strongholds of Congress.

Asaduddin Owaisi had hoped that the Muslims of Gujarat would welcome him with open arms. He had visited Gujarat several times during campaigning and held several meetings. The AIMIM chief’s meetings received a mixed response. There was a crowd in the meetings, but at the same time, they were also seen being opposed by Muslims everywhere.

Now, as the results have come out, it can be seen that the party failed to make any mark in the election. AIMIM didn’t win any seat in Gujarat, and its vote share is less the 0.3%. Most of the AIMIM candidates lost their security deposit in the polls.

AIMIM in Gujarat elections

Out of the total of 182 seats, AIMIM had fielded its candidates from 14 seats. These 14 constituencies and their results are as follows:

1.   Bapunagar: While AIMIN was going to contest from this constituency, their candidate Shahnawaz Pathan withdrew his candidature and supported Congress on this seat. BJP has been declared the winner from here.

2.   Bhuj: Shakeel Sama got an AIMIM ticket here and crossed a mark of 15% vote share, receiving 17% votes, but he came third after BJP and Congress. BJP’s Keshubhai Patel won with more than 53% votes.

3.   Danilimda (SC): AIMIM candidate Kaushika Parmar could secure a mere 1.58% votes here and lost to Shailesh Parmar of Congress who bagged more than 44% votes. BJP’s Nareshbhai Shankarbhai Vyas was the runners-up with 35.5% vote share.

4.   Daryapur: Hasan Khan Pathan alias Hasanlala, as mentioned in his candidature form, miserably failed. He could get just around 1.42% of the votes with less than 2000 votes. BJP won this seat while Congress came second.

5.   Godhra: Mufti Hasan Kachba contested the seat known for the carnage that took place in 2002. He had to be content with a 5.1% vote share. He lost to CK Raulji of the BJP who secured above 50% votes here which is almost ten folds more than the AIMIM candidate. Congress candidate Rashmitaben Chauhan was in the second spot with over 32% votes.

6.   Jamalpur-Khadia: Sabir Kabuliwala apparently made a dent in the Congress vote share here as he received more than 12 percent of the total votes. But this was insufficient to defeat Imran Khedawala of Congress who seemingly took away a major share of the Muslim votes and won the seat. BJP’s Bhushan Ashok Bhatt was in the second position.

7.   Khambhaliya: Yaqoob Bukhari of AIMIM stood nowhere in competition with others from this constituency. He received just 733 votes, which is 0.4% of the total votes polled. Ayar Mulubhai Hardasbhai Bera of BJP won this seat with over 40% of votes, while Congress was in the second place with 23.5%.

8.   Limbayat: Abdul Basir Sheikh of AIMIM received less than 3% votes here. BJP’s Sangitaben Patil has secured victory with over 53% votes, while AAP candidate Pankajbhai Tayade came second with 21% vote share. The Congress candidate was in the third position.

9.   Mandvi: Mohammad Iqbal Manjaliya of AIMIM stood fourth on this seat with a 5% vote share whereas Aniruddha Dave of the BJP emerged as the winner with more than 53% votes.

10. Mangrol: Sulaiman Patel of AIMIM received around 7.5% votes, registering over 10000 votes. Bhagvanbhai Kargatiya of the BJP is winner from the seat, while Congress came second with 26% and AAP was third with over 23% vote share.

11. Sidhpur: Abbasbhai Nodsola contested on the AIMIM ticket and secured less than 1% votes here. BJP won the seat while Congress came second in another close contest.

12. Surat East: AIMIM candidate Wasim Qureshi got a mere 1671 votes here, which is 1.2% vote share. BJP’s Arvind Rana won from Surat East with over 52% votes. In this seat too, Congress candidate Aslam Cyclewala got a majority of the Muslim votes with 42.4% vote share.

13. Vadgam (SC): Kalpesh Sundhia fought this seat for AIMIM. But the main tussle here was between Jignesh Mewani of Congress and Manibhai Vaghela of the BJP. In the end, Jignesh Mewani emerged as the winner in a close fight.

14. Vejalpur: Zainab Bibi Shaikh of AIMIM received just 1.01% votes on this seat, with just 2310 votes. BJP’s Amit Thaker won from Vejalpur with over 56% votes.

Therefore, it can be seen that AIMIM failed to mark its presence in the Gujarat assembly elections with a negligible vote share in the seats where the party contested. Its vote share in the state is less than 0.3%, while newcomer AAP has got almost 13% of the votes polled in the state. AAP has won 5 seats in Gujarat, and it is now the third-largest party in the state in terms of both the number of MLAs and vote share.

While the forms were still being submitted, AIMIM suffered a setback. On the last day of withdrawal of forms, the AIMIM candidate from Bapunagar, Shahnawaz Pathan, withdrew his form and joined the Congress.

AIMIM had fielded candidates in almost all Muslim-dominated seats. And these seats were mostly occupied by Congress MLAs earlier. BJP has won most of these seats, with a few won by Congress. The main seats where AIMIM contested were Jamalpur-Khadia, Danilimda, Daryapur, and Vadgam.

Fearing that AIMIM would cut its Muslim votes, Congress started spreading the word that AIMIM was the B team of the BJP and Owaisi was an agent of the RSS. And they were largely successful in spreading the word.

Even before the second phase of polling, the Shahi Imam of Ahmedabad’s Jama Masjid had made a statement to the media that Muslims should not allow division in their votes. He asked Muslims to vote for congress instead of AIMIM.

Apart from this, during the election campaign, people protested against Owaisi at many places across Gujarat by waving black flags and chanting ‘Go Back’. These places include Surat and Ahmedabad.

OpIndia tried to gauge the mind of the Muslim community

Even before the first phase of elections, an OpIndia team met Muslim voters in Ahmedabad and Surat and tried to find out how they were looking at AIMIM in the Gujarat elections.

We received mixed responses in this regard. Most of the Muslim community members believed that the AIMIM could do nothing but help the BJP by cutting the Votes of Congress.

Emotional appeal by Owaisi

Owaisi became emotional when he was campaigning for the second phase of polling after the first phase of polling. On December 2, while addressing a public meeting in Jamalpur, he broke down in tears.

Owaisi cried and appealed to the people to make Sabir win so that ‘no injustice is done to any Bilkis again’. Owaisi begged for votes in front of the people and said, “Allah, please make Sabir an MLA.”

Impact of AIMIM on election results

From the results, it is clear that the AIMIM could bag more than 5% votes in just 4 constituencies. It could secure less than 5% votes in 9 constituencies. 6 of the 9 seats mark less than 1.5% vote share for AIMIM. This is so minimal that it has no effect on the election results except for some publicity gimmicks by the Hyderabad-based Muslim leader.

Results on Muslim-Majority seats in Gujarat. OpIndia image

12 out of these 14 Muslim-majority seats were won by the BJP. Major fights on all these seats were between Congress and BJP only. AIMIM was not in second place in any of these seats. In fact, it was in the fourth spot on 7 out of these 14 seats.

‘Don’t bother. Perform for hoors in jannat’: Netizens roast ‘Comedian’ Kunal Kamra over his ‘next life’ remark on BJP’s historical win in Gujarat

‘Comedian’ Kunal Kamra is apparently more dejected after BJP’s landslide victory in the Gujarat state assembly elections rather than the defeated political parties like Congress and AAP. Taking a dig at BJP’s thumping win in Gujarat, Kamra tweeted that he will be able to perform in certain cities of Gujarat only in his next life.

“Performing in Ahmedabad, Surat, Baroda, Rajkot & Vapi in my next life…” tweeted Kamra.

Through this tweet, he essentially signalled that the people of Gujarat will repeat the same verdict to elect such a government for a lifetime which will strengthen the forces that ‘allegedly crush the voices of dissent and the so-called freedom of speech’ Kunal Kamra pretends to bat for. The ‘comedian’ posted the tweet implying that people in the BJP-ruled states do not allow him to perform, especially after many of his shows were cancelled after protests over Hinduphobic jokes made during such stand-up comedy gigs.

But Twitter users roasted Kunal Kamra with their befitting replies to his tweet.

Twitter users roast Kunal Kamra over his tweet mocking BJP’s victory in Gujarat

Responding to Kamra, a Twitter user said, “Perform in ‘Jannat’ for hoors. Don’t bother taking rebirth in India.”

Another Twitter account Dhoiboi replied, “Are next life me bhi rehne de yaar.” It means “hey friend, don’t perform in the next life too.”

Swati wrote in her reply, “Aah thank god. Gujarat main jarurat nahi tum jaise logo ki. the meltdown is so entertaining.” It means people like you are not needed in Gujarat.

Savitri Mumukshu brought a new angle in her roasting reply. She wrote, “This tweet will do more to drive huge investment in Gujarat than the Statue of Unity.”

another Twitter user JK posted, “Tere jitne bhi birth honge Gujarat me to BJP ki government hogi.” It means “Take whatever the number of rebirths, there will be a BJP government in Gujarat.”

BJP registered a landslide victory in the Gujarat state assembly elections of 2022. The party broke its past record of 127 seats that it made in 2002. It is about to break the 149-seats record of Madhavsinh Solanki which the Congress leader had set in 1985.

Kunal Kamra’s shows cancelled after protests over Hinduphobic content

Earlier this year, a bar in Gurgaon cancelled a show by Kunal Kamra which was scheduled to be held on September 17 and 18.

Studio Xo Bar in sector 29 in Gurgaon informed that they had cancelled Kunal Kamra’s show titled Kunal Kamra Live, after members of Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad protested against the scheduled show. The members of the organisations had asked the management of the bar to cancel the show, promising to hold protests outside the bar if they went ahead with the show. The organisations had also written to the administration seeking to cancel the show. Kunal Kamra’s shows are facing opposition from Hindu organisations because of his jokes insulting Hindu gods.

In December 2021, Kamra’s shows in Bengaluru were called off. The ‘comedian’ claimed that the show organisers did not get permission to accommodate 45 people in a venue that could seat more. While Kamra did not specify, the restriction could be likely due to COVID protocol amid the looming threat of the third wave and the ominous rise of the omicron variant at that time.

The Wire ombudsperson Pamela Philipose has an extended meltdown as BJP registers a historic win in Gujarat: Details

With the BJP’s inevitable march to power in Gujarat, ombudsperson of the ultra-leftist news portal The Wire, headed by US citizen Siddharth Varadarajan, Pamela Philipose, went on a deranged rant against Gujaratis. The ‘journalist’ chastised Gujaratis for voting for the BJP in a series of tweets posted on December 8, Thursday.

“Dear Gujarat, rapists and murderers may be garlanded, anaemia levels may remain high, the poorest may be swept away in vanity beautification, but the BJP and its government is immutable,” tweeted Pamela Philipose, shedding any pretence of political neutrality and objectivity that she and her ilk routinely lean on to pass off their convictions as intellectual insights.

Her discontent with the BJP’s epoch-making victory seemed so intense that she sent out numerous angry tweets directed at the people of Gujarat. “Dear Gujarat…Morbi bridge may collapse, floods may ruin towns, rivers may run toxic, land may get grabbed by mafia elements, but the BJP and is safe and well,” she wrote in another tweet.

The disgruntled ‘journalist’ further tweeted, “Dear Gujarat…At least the BJP here will not have to launch Operation Lotus in order to come to power.”

In yet another hateful tweet, she cursed the Gujaratis for choosing the saffron party. “Dear Gujarat…you have proved yet again that electoral democracy does not have a chance against Money, Media and Muscle power,” tweeted The Wire employee.

For those who are unfamiliar with Pamela Philipose, she was recently in the spotlight following the Meta-Wire fiasco when she opened up about the issue after several netizens questioned her views.

Pamela weighed in on the controversy after the ultra-leftist news portal The Wire withdrew its series of reports claiming that BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya had some superpowers to remove posts from Meta-owned Instagram after the reports were found to be fake.

The ombudsperson, also known as public editor or reader’s editor, is supposed to work with The Wire‘s editorial structure, and the portal had said that the position was created to add a new layer of transparency and accountability to their editorial functioning. After remaining silent on the controversy for days on end, Pamela Philipose finally opened up on the issue and tried to downplay the publication’s fiasco over the matter.

While Pamela Philipose refrained from taking a clear stand, she admitted that The Wire committed some mistakes. But she did not directly admit that The Wire or its sources fabricated evidence, and instead claimed that the investigation conducted by The Wire is prima facie a significant one. She also made several allegations against Meta.

Besides, the ombudsperson, who is supposed to be an independent authority, also fulminated against called OpIndia over its extensive coverage of The Wire’s fiasco over its Meta and Tek Fog stories.

Gujarat Congress wanted to shift its MLAs to Rajasthan to prevent poaching if it was close to halfway mark, now they’re struggling to win even 10% seats

Confident that it was getting close to the magic number in Gujarat, the Congress party had planned to transport its MLAs to Rajasthan to avoid what it called ‘Operation Lotus,’ an alleged attempt by the BJP to poach its MLAs. However, as the results of the Gujarat Assembly elections began to trickle in today (December 8, Thursday), the grand old party is decimated to its lowest-ever tally of seats in Gujarat this year.

In Gujarat, the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party is set to bag 156 seats, while the Congress party is winning 17 seats.

Desh Gujarat reported on Wednesday that the top State Congress leaders, including party chief Jagdish Thakor, State party in-charge Raghu Shamara, and others, met at the State party headquarters in the Paldi area of Ahmedabad and decided to relocate newly elected Congress MLAs to party-ruled neighbouring State Rajasthan after their election so that the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) cannot poach them if the BJP is short in numbers.

Even though all exit polls showed a clear BJP victory by a comfortable to large margin, State Congress officials were certain that the party’s tally will be higher than in 2017. Congress believed that BJP will not cross the halfway mark and will need the support of other parties to form the government. The party delegated zone-wise responsibilities to various leaders and instructed them to keep in touch with the party’s winning candidate and mobilise them to Rajasthan when called upon.

Congress struggles to gain even a tenth of a seat in Gujarat

To their disappointment, Congress is now battling to gain even a tenth of a seat in the state. According to recent reports, the BJP is anticipated to win 156 seats based on current trends and results that have already been reported. Congress, on the other hand, is expected to win only 17 of the 182 seats, plummeting below 10% of the total seats.

This year’s figures are far lower than what the Congress party attained in 2017, which, while the Congress lost to the BJP, provided the party and its adherents with an excuse to elevate Rahul Gandhi to a pedestal.

In 2017, the party claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s efforts paved the way for the party, which increased its tally of 61 seats from the previous assembly elections to 77. The party welcomed Rahul Gandhi as a mature leader and promptly handed over the responsibility of the national president to him.

This year, however, one wonders what the great old party’s members will have to say, as Rahul Gandhi addressed only two rallies, one in Surat and the other in Rajkot. Rahul visited Gujarat in the first week of September, only two days before embarking on his cross-country march from Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. Not just that, the question is why did his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, which was in the neighbourhood, skip Gujarat.

Congress planned to shift Himachal MLAs also to Rajasthan

Not just Gujarat MLAs, the Congress party had planned to shift its newly elected MLAs in Himachal Pradesh also to Rajasthan, for the same reason, to prevent alleged poaching by BJP. However, that plan was also dropped, although it was due to the completely opposite reason. While Himachal Pradesh election results were anticipated to be close, Congress actually won a comfortable majority. The party has won 40 seats in the 68-member house, with the ruling BJP getting 25 seats. This means, Congress is forming the government and there is no fear of poaching by BJP. As a result, Congress party cancelled the plan to shift their Himachal MLAs to Congress-ruled Rajasthan, and has called them to Chandigarh instead to discuss about the government formation.

UP Bypoll: After 70 years Rampur Sadar gets its first Hindu MLA breaching Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan’s stronghold

On Thursday, December 8, for the first time, the Rampur Sadar assembly seat has been won by a Hindu candidate. BJP candidate Akash Saxena inflicted a crushing defeat on Samajwadi Party candidate Mohammed Asim Raja, breaching the stronghold of SP’s controversial leader Azam Khan. The historic feat has been achieved after 70 years and 20 assembly elections.

Akash Saxena received 80964 votes, accounting for 61.95% of the total votes cast. Asim Raja of the SP had to settle for 47262 votes.

After the results were announced, the Samajwadi candidate blamed the Rampur police for his defeat. While speaking to local media, Asim Raja claimed that 70% votes were stolen in the bypoll. He alleged that the Rampur police forcibly stopped people from voting. “Elections were held in Rampur on December 5, and we had previously stated that elections had not taken place in Rampur,” he said.

The SP candidate also accused police of booth capturing. “Police did not allow Rampur residents to vote in any of the city’s 200 polling stations. Booths have been looted. Only 20% of the vote was cast in 252 polling places. All of the booths outside of the city and village were captured. There has been 50-70-80% voting. All the booths were captured. 2.25 lakh voters were denied the right to vote. Only 45,000 votes were cast, and many of them were cast by police officers. The counting has begun. However, in the city where the SP had a stronghold, where the total vote was 70%, they were not allowed to vote,” Asim Raja claimed.

However, no such cases have been reported and elections were held peacefully.

Notably, Bypoll on the Rampur Sadar seat was necessitated after Azam Khan was sentenced to three years in jail in a hate speech case, and consequently disqualified as MLA. Due to his conviction, Azam Khan cannot contest elections for the next 6 years.

TMC leader Saket Gokhale granted bail by Ahmedabad court in fake news case, arrested again by police after release

On Thursday, 8th December 2022, Trinamool Congress Party’s leader Saket Gokhale was granted regular bail by a Gujarat Magistrate Court. The former ‘RTI activist’ was arrested by the Gujarat police over his tweet spreading fake news about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Morbi visit. Earlier, on Tuesday (December 7), an Ahmedabad court had remanded Trinamool Congress (TMC) spokesperson Saket Gokhale to two-day police custody.

TMC leader and MP Derek O’Brien tweeted and shared this information. He wrote, “National spokesperson of Trinamool Congress Party, the fearless Saket Gokhale has been granted bail mins ago in Ahmedabad. Thank you to the legal team led by Advocate Majeed Memon ex-Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament. Inspired by Mamata Banerjee, all of us are always ready to fight the good fight.”

Gokhale was apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Jaipur, Rajasthan, by officials from the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell and brought to Ahmedabad in the afternoon, where he was formally arrested.

Notably, Gokhale had shared a fabricated news report about an RTI query and its response that does not exist. He had claimed that ₹30 crore was spent on PM Modi’s Morbi visit, sharing a news clipping from an unnamed Gujarati newspaper, which was claimed to be Gujarat Samachar. But the government has said that it is fabricated and no such report was published and there is no such RTI reply. Moreover, Gujarat Samachar also clarified that they have not published such a report.

While Saket Gokhale was arrested for posting fake news and he has been granted bail as per regular legal procedure, TMC is trying to make a hero out of him. The party is firmly standing behind him, with Derek O’Brien calling him ‘fearless’. However, as Derek O’Brien himself regularly post fake news on social media, it is no wonder that he thinks this is a legitimate tool in politics.

Update: Later in the day, Saket Gokhale was reportedly arrested by Morbi Police immediately after he was released by Ahmedabad police as per the bail order. Another case was registered against him for the fake tweet in Morbi, and accordingly, Morbi police detained him.

Derek O’Brien tweeted to confirm the development, calling it a shocker. He said that Saket was arrested again at 8.45 PM by police after he had come out of the Cyber Police Station in Ahmedabad. He alleged that police arrested him without any warrant and took him to an unknown destination.

The MP also informed that a delegation of TMC MPs from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will visit Gujarat to rescue Saket Gokhale.

A video also has emerged showing Saket arguing with police at the police station premises, reportedly moments before he was arrested.
