Punjab: Pro-Khalistan slogans raised in Jalandhar ahead of chief minister Bhagwant Mann’s visit

On Saturday 27th August 2022, a day before Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann’s visit to Jalandhar, pro-Khalistan slogans were raised in the city. These slogans were written on the posters of CM Mann and former CM Beant Singh. The posters and banners welcoming the CM were vandalised by miscreants with Khalistani slogans written in black ink.

CM Mann is to visit Jalandhar for the inauguration of ‘Khedan Vatan Punjab Diyan’ on Monday. The Punjab police are investigating in connection with the slogans raised ahead of CM Bhagwant Mann’s visit. It is notable that the former CM Beant Singh died in a bomb explosion outside the Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh on August 31, 1995, in an attack by Khalistani terrorists.

Apart from the vandalisation of the posters, a statue of Bent Singh was also vandalised by smearing black ink. Reportedly the slogans were written on the posters on Saturday night. On receiving information about the same, police removed the slogans. The police are checking CCTV footage of nearby locations to identify the pro-Khalistani culprits.

This is not the first incident that pro-Khalistan slogans are raised in public places in Punjab after Aam Aadmi Party formed a government in Punjab in March 2022. Earlier on 20th June 2022, a man wrote pro-Khalistan slogans on the walls of two educational institutions. The culprit was nabbed on July 6. The police identified him as Manjeet who is a resident of Patiala.

In the investigations, Manjeet said that he was promised to pay USD 1,000 by a US-based person for writing these slogans. Manjeet was brought before the court, which remanded him to 5-day police custody pending further investigation.

Aam Aadmi Party is also preparing for the upcoming assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh. Incidentally, pro-Khalistani slogans were also reported from the state in May 2022. A Punjabi person was arrested for purportedly putting Khalistan flags and writing pro-Khalistan slogans on the walls in Dharmashala in Himachal Pradesh. The culprit in this case belonged to Morinda in Punjab. He allegedly put up pro-Khalistan flags and wrote slogans on the wall of Himachal Assembly in Dharamsala.

In the investigations, this culprit confessed that he was also involved in putting up Khalistan banners outside the mini-secretariat complex in Punjab`s Ropar on April 13. On May 8, ‘Khalistan’ flags were discovered tied to the Assembly’s main gate and walls. Moreover, ‘Khalistan’ was inscribed in green on the outermost wall of the Assembly.

Following the incident, Chief Minister Jairam Thakur asked the state police to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the provocative incident. The SIT, in turn, filed a first information report (FIR) against Gurpatwant Singh Pannu of the banned Khalistani terror outfit Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) under Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for inciting or abetting terror acts and Indian Penal Code Sections 153A and 153B for promoting disharmony or enmity between different groups on the basis of religion.

‘I am a nationalist, live with it’ – Anupam Kher opens up about The Kashmir Files, Boycott culture and re-inventing himself as an actor

On August 20, actor Anupam Kher appeared in an interview with Times Now Group Editor Navika Kumar on her show Frankly Speaking. During the interview, Kher touched on several topics, including the boycott trend that has been happening in several films and explained it does not hurt the film. “If the film is good, the people will see it,” the actor said.

During the interview, Anupam Kher said, “They have to live with it now. They have to live with this fact now that I am a nationalist. I love my country. Anybody who loves my country, I will love that person. Tomorrow if I feel Rahul Gandhi loves this country, I will be his good friend. Tomorrow if Sonia Gandhi Ji feels this country is the best thing that happened to her, I will be with them.” Denying saying that the Congress leaders do not love the country, he said, “The tweets of Rahul Gandhi that I have seen, the only thing he does is criticize the people who are doing good work.”

When Kher was asked if he turned towards foreign films because his movies were not working well in Bollywood, the actor said that that was not the case. He said, “My last film, The Kashmir Files, has worked very well at the box office. I have been part of many blockbusters in Bollywood. Even in Kartikey 2, though my role was of only 10 minutes, I am happy that it is working well at the box office.”

Navika asked Kher about the series of flops that Bollywood has given in recent times. She pointed out that 27 out of 30 recently released films did not work at the box office. Kher said, “During the pandemic, something changed in the audience. Everyone was affected at some level.” He added that OTT played a vital role in how Indians perceive entertainment. He said, “When people were done with the Indian cinema on OTT platforms, they watch Malayalam, Tamil, Korean and cinema of other languages. They unknowingly found that there was much more to entertainment than what they have watched previously.”

Speaking about Laal Singh Chaddha and Rakshabandhan, which did not work at the box office, Kher said, “I did not watch either of the films. Maybe they were not good films. Maybe RRR, KGF and Pushpa were better films and were related to people. We need to introspect about what we want to do. Do we want to make bubblegum films or fake films? Are we going to look into what is more real, more India-centric? All the south Indian films are very India-centric.”

‘No one thought Kashmir Files would do so well’

Speaking about The Kashmir Files, he said, “No one had thought a film that was made with a budget of 15-20 crores with no songs and based on genocide would work. At the same time, Bhool Bhulaiya 2 did over 150 crores of business. Even Gangubai did well. Those films that did not do well, maybe they need to look into it in a different manner. Maybe Aamir Khan took five years to make that film, and in those five years, the audience changed.”

During the interview, Kher mentioned that he had charged 1/5 of his fees for Kashmir Files because he wanted to do the film. “I have been working on the cause for the past 30 years. Do not teach me what I should do and not. You are not coming to know what has happened during that time. Stop telling me what to do. It is not going to make any difference.” Terming the allegations that Kashmir Files resulted in attacks on Hindus in the valley as ‘nonsense’, he questioned if the terror attacks happening around the world and killings of Muslims in the valley were because of Kashmir Files.

He added, “In that way, the films that showcase rape, murder, curse words should be deemed as cause of such incidents happening in the society. Anurag Kashyap’s films have curse words. Should we blame his films for children as young as eight years old using curse words?”

‘I am not part of mainstream films’

Kher pointed out that he is no longer part of mainstream films as offers have not come. He said, “I have done Karan Johar, Aditya Chopra, Sajid Nadiawala films. I am not blaming them for not offering me roles. I found my path during this time. I have done a film named connect in Tamil. I am sure it will do well as it is a horror film with a story around pandemic.” He mentioned other projects that he was a part of in recent times and said, “I am sure these films will do good at the box office.”

Kher said he could have been depressed because his old friends were not casting him, but during that time, he found more paths. “When a door shuts, so many windows open. I am rediscovering myself as an actor. Suddenly so many things have been happening. Reinvention is important.”

‘I am disappointed by Anurag Kashyap’s statement’

Speaking about the statement that filmmaker Anurag Kashyap made recently that he would be okay if RRR goes for the Oscars, Kashmir Files should not be selected to represent India. He said, “I am disappointed by the statement he made. He can vouch for RRR. It is a great film. But he has no right to say about Kashmir Files that it should not be selected? Why? It has been loved by critics. It is a well-made film about genocide. [His] statement was in bad taste.”

‘Boycott does not harm the films’

Speaking about the statement Arjun Kapoor made, Kher said, “I know Arjun personally. I don’t know to whom he was angry. But he has to be careful what he speaks. We all need to. The boycott does not harm the films. A few years back, people wanted to have controversies around their films so that people would go and watch them. I know it; I am part of the system. A few years back, in 2015, Aamir Khan made some controversial statements, and after that, his film Dangal came, which was an all-time hit in India.”

He added, “Everyone has freedom of expression. If someone says they do not want to watch the film, it is their right. But telling them that we will do something about it, that not the right way. If the film is good and the audience like it, there is no way it will not do well.”

When Navika asked about people’s comment that Kashmir Files worked well at the box office because PM Modi endorsed it, Kher said, “In that case, his biography starring Vivek Oberoi would have done well at the box office. Did it?” He added, “It is childish to say if their films did not do well, but ours did, it was because we favour Modi Ji. You are a bad loser [for saying so].”

He said what anyone has said in the past is going to come back and bite him. “I made a tweet during previous government [UPA] that the petrol price has increased and my driver would not come on a cycle. I am still paying for the tweet. People question me why I am not speaking now.”

West Bengal: TMC issues notice to Minister Shrikant Mahato after he criticizes fellow party leaders for corrupt practices

Trinamool Congress Party’s leader and current minister in Mamata Banerjee’s government, Shrikant Mahato, has been issued a notice by the party after he lashed out at his fellow party leaders. A video clip of him criticizing various TMC leaders went viral on Sunday 28th August 2022. A notice was issued by the TMC to the Shalboni MLA who is currently the Minister of State for Consumer Security.

In this viral video, minister Shrikant Mahato alleged that leaders like Uma Sareen, Sandhya Roy, Moon Moon Sen, June Mallya, Sayani, Sayantika, Mimi Chakraborty, Nusrat Jahan, Nepal Singh, Sandeep Singh, and Uttara Singh are looting people and unfortunately TMC is looking at such leaders to be the assets of the party.

This video of Shrikant Mahato appeared during a time when the incumbent TMC government is already under pressure over corruption allegations following the arrest of Partha Chatterjee in connection with the SSC recruitment scam and Anubrata Modal’s arrest in the cattle smuggling case.

In the two-and-a-half-minute long viral video, Shrikant Mahato said, “Don’t we have the right to live? Don’t we have citizenship? That’s what we want to say. From today, I will start the journey towards victory through planning. We will submit a memorandum to the police and the BDO. What will we do if our citizenship and rights are taken away? What should be done? For that, we will unite the civil society of West Bengal, the peasant society of West Bengal, and the intellectual society of West Bengal. We want to go up to Mamata Didi.”

Shrikant Mahato further said in the viral video, “From Abhishek Banerjee to Mamata Banerjee, and from Partha to Subrata Bakshi, I tried to convince them all. They didn’t want to understand. They identify bad people as good people. So how will we survive? One must call a bad person a bad person and a good person should always be called a good person. You have to listen to good people. But they are listening to the bad guys. If the looters like Uma Sareen, Sandhya Roy, Moon Moon Sen, June Malia, Sayani, Sayantika, Mimi, Nusrat, Nepal Singh, Sandeep Singh, and Uttara Singh are considered assets, then how you are going to build the party?”

He added, “If those who loot the money of the people of Shalboni are assets of the party and if those who print money are called leaders in the party, then it is better that such ministers go to jail. Otherwise, people will blame us and say that these ministers are all thieves.”

In this video, Shrikant Mahato can be heard saying, “The party will listen to the thieves only. People from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata will commit robberies, and we’ll be silent. Should I be in such a cabinet?”

Reacting to the video, TMC leader from Pashchim Medinipur Ajit Maiti said, “The minister said something that reached the party in the form of videos. That talk is a little offensive, and for this reason, Shrikant Mahato has been issued a show-cause notice on the instructions of the party yesterday. Today he replied and expressed regret.”

OpIndia couldn’t independently verify the authenticity of the video, however, TMC’s action suggests it is a genuine rant from their minister.

As PM Modi inaugurates earthquake memorial ‘Smriti Van’ in Bhuj, locals recall how he helped Kutch resurrect while working as Gujarat CM

On Sunday 28th August 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Smriti Van memorial, which honours the resilience of citizens during the catastrophic 2001 earthquake in Gujarat’s Kutch region. The memorial, which spans nearly 470 acres, was built to honour the spirit of resilience in the aftermath of the 2001 earthquake, which killed 13,000 people in Bhuj. The names of those who died in the earthquake are inscribed on the memorial. It also has a cutting-edge Smriti Van Earthquake Museum.

The museum displays Gujarat’s topographic features, redeveloping projects, and positive stories following the 2001 earthquake, as well as information about various types of natural calamities and future preparedness for any type of disaster. It also has a block where people can relive the experience of an earthquake using a 5D simulator and another where they can pay tribute to the unfortunate souls.

The Kutch district as seen today is an example of rehabilitation after a natural calamity. As PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the memorial, the Twitter handle Modi Story shared a video in which those who witnessed this rehabilitation shared their memories about Narendra Modi’s dedication to uplifting the earthquake-hit Kutch.

Bharat Shah, a resident of Anjar in Kutch said, “The earthquake hit this area in 2001. The death toll in Anjar alone was 4000. I lost my wife and my daughter Anjali in that earthquake. After the earthquake, Narendra Bhai directly visited Anjar. He looked for me. I met him. He told me that all this is nature’s play. We can’t undo what has happened. There are so many people who are in grief. If you start helping them, your sorrow will automatically go away.”

Bharat Shah further said, “There was a boy living in front of my house. His leg was crushed by a big rock. I showed it to Saheb. He said we will fix this problem. We visited the Tahsildar office and executive office. A helicopter was called on the same evening and the boy was taken to Pune for treatment. Today, that person is alive only because of Narendra Modi.”

Vasan Ahir, the MLA of the Anjar constituency said, “At that time, an ambassador car reached my home. He came to the security room of the house and asked in Gujarati, Vasan Bhai, is your telephone working? I wish to talk to various NGOs across the country. And then, he sat at my house for 8 hours. He talked to the biggest of the NGOs and community support organizations in the country and asked them for helping Kutch at that time when he was neither the chief minister nor any elected member. He is the one who planned the rehabilitation process for the people of Kutch when he was not holding any position.”

An RSS worker from Gujarat, Dilip Deshmukh said, “26th January 2001, the earthquake happened in the morning. On the same day, in the evening hours, he called me and said, Dilip Bhai there is a massive earthquake in Kutch, you must be knowing by now. All of you might be aware of Nasle Wadia – the owner of the Bombay Dying company. When Modiji called him, he said, tell me what can I do? Narendra Bhai said I need biscuits for Gujarat. Wadia asked how many biscuits should I give. Narendra Bhai said ten lakhs. When Wadia asked ten lakhs of what, Narendra Bhai said ten lakh cartons of biscuits I need. It was only after this that Wadia said that he is giving his whole godown. For more than the next six months after that incident, every village in Kutch was getting free biscuits.”

Jeetendra Patel of Vadodara said, “When Narendra Bhai took charge as the chief minister of the state for the first time, the very first challenge he faced was the rehabilitation works of the 2001 earthquake. It was going on at a very low pace. After joining as the chief minister, he took the work as a priority. He held a program in Gandhi Nagar with all the NGOs involved in the rehabilitation works. He spoke in Gujarati. He said, come on everybody, let us convert this calamity into an opportunity. And build a new Gujarat again.”

In this video by Twitter handle Modi Story, Vasan Ahir also informed about the droughts in Kutch and how Narendra Modi quenched the thirst of this dry region. He said, “Our Kutch area had always been a drought-prone area. When Narendra Bhai became the chief minister, he laid down an 800-kilometer-long pipeline to provide us with tap water for drinking and domestic use. Narendra Bhai said that if we want to build this Kutch area, we must declare a tax holiday for the next five years. Accordingly, for the industries that settled in Kutch in the next five years, there was no taxation from the state in those five years.”

Balkrishan Goenka, the chairman of the Welspun Group of Industries said, “When I met him for the first time, he said that you will not be expanding the business in Vapi. Instead, you will go to Kutch. I said the Kutch region is recently hit by an earthquake. It is not even a year to that. There is no water, no road, no electricity. Setting up a big textile plant in such a place. Is it possible? To this, Modi replied, Goenka Ji I am telling you, the land of Kutch has that capacity that you invest a rupee and you will get a dollar from there. Looking at the seriousness and conviction in his voice, I somehow dared to go there. I realized that this is not the voice of a politician. This is coming right from the heart.”

The former additional chief secretary of Gujarat, Rajiv Kumar Gupta said, “The Kutch as you see it today, and the people living in Kutch are seeing it today, no one would have imagined that Kutch will one day become one of the most industrialized districts of the Gujarat state. Today there is not only the industry, but Kutch has also emerged as a hub of food and vegetable not only in Gujarat but in the whole world. There is a fruit called the dragon fruit. When he knew that there can be a higher production of fruit in Kutch, he shaped an altogether separate policy for that and helped the farmers for growing that crop. Today, there is so much dragon fruit production in this area that the farmers earn around 40 to 50 lakh rupees on the produce taken from just an acre of land. No farmer in the country gets this much income.”

Vishwa Hindu Parishad worker Arvind Brahmbhatt said, “We visited Kutch in 1988. At that time he took us to the white desert. In the discussions that took place there, Narendra Bhai told us that this is one of its kind places in the world and we must show this to the world.”

Gujarat’s former minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said, “The whole economy of Kutch has changed after the tourism increased. In fact, the Kutch economy has grown ten folds. It brought along transportation, eateries, employment, and all. And I just said once, Saheb we need marketing, he brought Amitabh Bachchan for that. And he said nothing except ‘Yaar, Kuch nahi dekha to kuch nahi dekha’. And it was spread like anything in the world.”

Pankaj Mehta from Rapar in Kutch said, “When Narendra Bhai was assigned with the responsibility of the campaigning committee at the national level, he was holding public meetings in the whole country. On the very second day of the campaign, at around 7 or 7:30 in the morning, I received a phone call on the landline at my home. Narendra Bhai was speaking from the other end. He told me, Pankaj, the Ran Utsav is going on in Kutch. See if the quality of the food being served there is good. I am informed that it is not good. You monitor it and report it to me in one or two days. I thought this man who was holding a big public meeting in Mumbai last night, how can he be worried about the quality of food being served in the Ran Utsav at 7 am the next day?”

Gujarat’s former minister Bhupendra Lakhawala said, “It marked one year to the earthquake in 2002. Saheb told all of us, the ministers, that you are not going home. You will be celebrating this Diwali at Bhuj in Kutch with the people there. And all the ministers, including Narendra Modi, went to each and every village of Kutch and Bhuj during the Diwali period. Everyone visited certain areas. Like I went to Anjar. We saw the things. Everything was demolished. From there onwards we reported to the chief minister about the help required in those areas.”

California Shooting: 3 people injured in a shooting incident outside Gurudwara in Stockton, unconfirmed links to SFJ emerge

On August 27 (local time), a shooting incident was reported at a Sikh Gurudwara in Stockton, California. As per reports, the Stockton Police Department responded to the reports of the shooting at around 6:40 PM ET. They found three victims upon arriving at the scene. The injured, that reportedly had non-life-threatening injuries, were transferred to a hospital by the first respondents.

KTLA-TV quoted Public information officer Joe Silva saying that the incident occurred at an event around Sikh Temple Street. However, the officer said the shooting incident was not linked to the Gurudwara and did not happen on the property of the Gurudwara.

The Police have said that the suspects and the victims are all Sikhs. As per the statement issued by the Gurudwara, a weightlifting competition was held on the Gurudwara property before the altercation. The Gurudwara event happened successfully without any incident.

However, another event was happening outside Gurudwara, where the shooting incident happened. The Gurudwara denied any connection with the incident.

The Stockton Police Department is investigating the matter.

The power-lifting competition was in memories of Bhindranwale

It is notable that the power-lifting competition that was being held in the Gurudwara was in the memory of Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. A video of the Gurudwara administration announcing the competition is available on the Gurudwara’s Facebook Page.

Possible link to Sikhs For Justice

There have been unconfirmed reports that the shooting incident happened between two groups linked to Dharamvir and Pavittar Singh. Dharamvir is allegedly linked to Sikhs For Justice, a Khalistani Terrorist organization that has been banned in India.

OpIndia could not independently confirm the reports of the Khalistani link.

Jharkhand: Hindu girl Ankita dies after being set ablaze by neighbour Shahrukh Hussain for refusing his advances

Ankita Kumari, who was being treated at a hospital in Jharkhand after a neighbour named Shahrukh Hussain poured petrol on her and set fire to her four days ago, died on Sunday in hospital. Swarajya journalist Swati Goyal Sharma shared this information in a tweet. The girl’s father Sanjeev Singh informed Sharma that Ankita breathed her last at 2.30 am. She was admitted to Ranchi RIMS for treatment.

Because of one-sided love, Shahrukh Hussain had torched Ankita alive by pouring petrol on her. The only mistake of Ankita Kumari, a student studying in class 12, was that she did not want to talk to Shahrukh, after which the man torched her.

The horrific attack on Ankita happened on Tuesday (August 23) morning in Dhumka in Jharkhand. Ankita had told the police in a critical state that her neighbour, Shahrukh, used to harass her every day. He used to approach her and seek her friendship. He had also obtained her phone number and used to call her repeatedly, asking her for friendship. When Ankita chastised him for not stopping, he threatened to kill her.

Ankita informed her father of this on Monday. When she woke up the next morning, her body was in flames as she ran up to family members who attempted to extinguish the fire. Her family then hurried her to the hospital. It was found in the hospital that Ankita had suffered severe burns. It turned out that Shahrukh went to Ankita’s house on Tuesday morning, poured petrol on Ankita through a window when she was asleep in her bed and torched her, and then fled from the scene.

In the hospital, Ankita named Shahrukh as the culprit. After taking Ankita and her family members’ statements, police arrested Shahrukh the same day. She was initially taken to Phoolo Jhano Medical College Hospital in Dhumka, and was later shifted to RIMS in Ranchi as she was in critical condition.

Ankita’s family members hoped she would survive. However, due to severe burns which were reportedly around 90%, she was unable to recuperate and died around 2:30 AM on Sunday. Photos show that her hands, legs and fare were badly burnt.

The incident sparked uproar throughout the Dumka district. Hindu organisations have called for protest marches and bandhs, and many are demanding that Shahrukh be hanged after a fast trial in court.

As India is set to face off against Pakistan in Asia Cup 2022, here is a look back at the history of the encounters between the arch-rivals in the tournament

0

The India-Pakistan Cricket match to be held later today in the 2022 edition of the Asia Cup promises to be yet another high-octane affair. The match will be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates. India and Pakistan have played each other 200 times in international cricket, the most recent one being their T20 World Cup encounter in 2021 at the same stadium.

Over the span of 14 editions since 1984, the Asia Cup has seen some of the most thrilling matches between the two arch-rivals, and fans are expecting more of the same later tonight. The 15th edition of the Asia Cup began yesterday, with Afghanistan comfortably beating Sri Lanka.

India and Pakistan first played in the Asia Cup in 1984, during the inaugural competition in Sharjah. India won that match by 54 runs and took home the trophy. Pakistan’s first victory over India in the tournament didn’t come till the 1995 edition when it won by 97 runs in Sharjah.

India has won eight out of the thirteen Asia Cup encounters versus Pakistan. Pakistan has defeated India five times in the ODI format of the tournament but hasn’t managed to do so in the T20 format. The Asia Cup now switches between T20 and ODI formats alternatively. India’s recent record against Pakistan is really good in the competition, having won five of their past six Asia Cup encounters since 2010.

The highest team total for India against Pakistan is 330/4 which was made while chasing 329 in Asia Cup 2012 with Virat Kohli leading the chase scoring an epic 183*. The lowest total India made against Pakistan was in 1995 when the Indian team was all out for a score of 169 handing Pakistan the victory.

Asia Cup has largely been dominated by India and Sri Lanka, winning the tournament 7 times and 5 times respectively, and Pakistan has traditionally underperformed on this stage. However, with a weak Sri Lanka side, and backed by Babar Azam and Rizwan, Pakistan will be hoping to turn the tables this time on their neighbours. The loss of Shaheen Shah Afridi has dealt a major blow to them even before the tournament began, but with India also missing Jasprit Bumrah, it evens up the odds a little bit.

With the bilateral series suspended between the two countries after Pakistan sponsored 26/11 attack on Mumbai, the two teams last played in the T20 World Cup in October of last year. On that day, Pakistan won by ten wickets thanks to Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. During the match today, all eyes will be on those two from Pakistan point of view while India will hope Captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli step up to the plate.

‘What do you mean by Gandhi family gave so much? Is this a registered party or some Mughal sultanate?’: Maharashtra Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan

Criticism of top Congress leadership, especially the Gandhi family, by veteran Congress leaders after Ghulam Nabi Azad’s resignation is not over yet. Maharashtra’s former chief minister and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan recently made similar remarks, asking why everything in the Congress party has to be about the Gandhi family only. Chavan asked in a conversation with Mumbai Tak, ‘What do you mean by Gandhi family gave so much to the Congress leaders? Is this a registered political party or some Mughal sultanate?’

Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad recently left the Congress party. Criticizing him, Rajasthan’s chief minister Ashok Gehlot said, “A person like Azad was given everything by the Congress, today his identity is because of Congress, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, PV Narasimha Rao, and Sonia Gandhi. The way he expressed his thoughts isn’t right.”

When Maharashtra’s senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan was asked about this, he said, “It is very important to analyze this mindset lying behind Ashok Gehlot’s statement. He said that the Gandhi family gave so much to the leaders. Is this party personal property? Congress is a political party that functions on democratic principles. The party has a certain constitution that we have submitted to the election commission while registering the party.”

Prithviraj Chavan further said, “Now, tell me, should this party operate according to the constitution or should the leaders of the party be content with whatever is given to them by the Gandhi family? And what do you mean when you say given by the Gandhi family? Is this a Mughal Badshahi system or some sultanate? You are saying like this only because there are only appointments for various posts and not internal elections.”

Prithviraj Chavan added, “Ashok Gehlot is saying like you are appointed by the family on some post of the party and now you should be very happy with that. But why are you appointing in the first place? Why not internal elections? At some point in time, we should seriously think about the last 24 years in which there are no internal elections in the party. Are we going to give serious thought to that? And everyone including me is guilty of that. Why did not we speak up then and why are we speaking only in the last two years? It is because, in that old system, when Sonia Gandhi was leading the party, we were registering victories in elections, and we were in power 10 years ago. And it is our fault that we did not speak. We should have told the top leaders that the last internal elections were held 24 years ago.”

Prithviraj Chavan said, “When PV Narsimha Rao was leading, we had a meeting in Tirupati where a working committee was elected. After that, Sitaram Kesari became the party president who held the elections of the working committee in the Kolkata meeting of the Congress party. There is no election for the working committee in the last 24 years and it is because of this that one dares to say that you are given so much by the Gandhi family. Who are you to give something to us? What do you mean by ‘giving’? Is this like some next generation of some Mughal sultanate that will give something to people and people will receive it with gratitude?”

Prithviraj Chavan is a senior Congress leader from Maharshtra. He worked as the chief minister of the state from 2010 to 2014. Before that, he was a minister of state in the Prime Minister’s office in Dr. Manmohan Singh’s cabinet in the UPA government.

Congress Party President Elections are finally set to take place on October 17 this year

0

On August 28, during the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, the party finally decided to hold the elections for the post of Party President on October 17. The counting for the same will commence on October 19. Currently, Sonia Gandhi is serving as the interim President since 2019, a position she also held on a full-time basis from 1998 to 2017. Sonia Gandhi’s son Rahul Gandhi was the party president in the period from 2017 to 2019.

The announcement of the date has come at a time when several Congress leaders have either resigned from their respective posts or resigned from the party itself. Notably, Anand Sharma resigned on August 24 from the Chairmanship of the Steering Committee of Himachal Pradesh Congress but announced that he would stay in the party. On August 26, veteran Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad resigned from the party. There have been reports that he might form his own party in Jammu and Kashmir. Following Azad’s resignation, several Congress leaders from Jammu and Kashmir also resigned from the party.

Anand Sharma and Ghulam Nabi Azad were part of G23, the rebel group of leaders inside the Congress party that have raised serious questions about the leadership and vision of the party.

It is noteworthy that earlier this year, senior Congress leader also Sunil Jakhar left the party and joined Bharatiya Janata Party. Before him, Congress leader and former Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh had resigned from the party before state elections and formed his own political party that contested alongside BJP in the Punjab Assembly Elections.

This year, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh will have Assembly Elections, both states are currently ruled by BJP. Amidst the upcoming state elections and preparations for the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, senior Congress leaders leaving the party is not a good sign for the party. Looking at the exodus from Congress, the party will struggle to maintain its position as the main opposition to the ruling BJP, and this decision to finally hold the elections for the party president may be one last ditch attempt to stop more exits.

As Noida’s Twin Towers get demolished, here is a look at the world’s 5 biggest controlled demolitions in human history

Final preparations for the demolitions of the unauthorized Supertech Twin Towers in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, have been completed. According to a Supreme Court of India ruling, the approximately 100-metre-tall Supertech Twin Towers will be demolished using explosives in a controlled detonation at 2.30 PM today.

Edifice Engineering of West Bengal has been granted the assignment, and the firm has partnered with South African firm Jet Demolitions to demolish the pair of buildings in a controlled demolition. As the Twin Towers are brought down, here is a list of the 5 biggest controlled demolitions in human history.

Kingdome, Seattle, United States

A multipurpose sports venue with 65,000 seats, the Seattle Kingdome was inaugurated in 1976. With a diameter of almost 660 feet and a height of 250 feet above the playing surface, the stadium’s dome was the largest thin shell concrete roof in the entire world. A compression ring at the dome’s top connected to a concrete tension ring at the dome’s base through radial concrete ribs that were cast in place. There were thin concrete shells in between the concrete ribs.

Because of a design defect, the Kingdome’s roof had problems right from the start. The roof’s acoustic ceiling tiles were used as moulds to pour concrete over the roof sections because the stadium had a smaller budget compared to its contemporaries. Six metal clips were used to secure the tiles, however, when moisture from the polyurethane insulation accumulated in the tiles owing to ineffective water vapour management, their effectiveness deteriorated. As a result, three months prior to the stadium’s inauguration, leaks in the roof were discovered.

Subsequent attempts to fix the issue either made it worse or were quickly undone. Though it lasted for 24 straight years, but the issue could not be solved. Therefore, in 2000, the Kingdome was demolished, and its place was taken by separate baseball and football stadiums.

AfE Tower, Frankfurt, Germany

When the 381-foot-tall AfE Tower, built in 1972, was demolished in Frankfurt, Germany, in 2014, it became the highest structure ever demolished using explosives. The building was used by Johann Wolfgang Goethe University. The AfE Tower was initially intended to house 2,500 students. However, since its inception, the building was occupied by a substantially higher number of students, resulting in waiting times of more than 15 minutes at the seven elevators. Only five of the seven lifts were operational, and they were frequently stuck.

Finally, it was concluded that the university would acquire a significant number of new buildings on the Westend campus. The AfE Tower was rendered obsolete due to outdated technologies. As a result, it was decided that the building would be demolished.

The destruction of the AfE Tower began on July 8, 2013, and was expected to last ten to twelve months. Finally, in February 2014, the 50,000-tonne structure was brought down with around 10,000 onlookers watching using 950kg of explosives and proactive safety precautions such as 6.5m high barricades, water tanks, and a 250m exclusion zone.

Genoa Bridge, Genoa, Italy

A section of the Morandi highway bridge in Genoa, Italy, fell after heavy rainfall on August 14, 2018. The death toll was estimated to be 43, with a large number left wounded. The bridge was almost 1.2 kilometres long and carried the A10 highway over the city. It opened in 1967 and served as a significant conduit for commodities from local ports supplying the Italian Riviera and France’s southeast coast.

The collapse of the bridge sparked widespread concern throughout Europe about the structural stability of critical infrastructure. Several enquiries were set up and it was decided to demolish the remaining part of the bridge and construct a new one.

The demolition took place in 2019, with 80,000 tonnes of concrete left after it was demolished. The bridge was surrounded by 50 big water tanks to reduce possible air pollutants and prevent dust from spreading to the city.

Dunes Hotel, Las Vegas, United States

The Dunes Hotel was a hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, which operated from May 23, 1955, to January 26, 1993. The Dunes’ architecture was influenced by stories from the Arabian Nights. The Dunes struggled despite its great debut because of its location at the southernmost part of the Strip at the time. After experiencing serious financial issues, the casino stopped operating in 1992.

Dunes, like many other famous hotels of the era, was unable to compete with the brand-new, thrilling megaresorts that were emerging. Following its financial struggles, on October 27, 1993, The Dunes was demolished in a spectacular celebration that featured large fireworks displays and the use of three “cannon bursts” from the English cruiser “HMS Britannia.”

Landmark Tower, Texas, United States

The Landmark Tower was a 30-story skyscraper in Downtown Fort Worth, Texas, located at 200 West 7th Street. The building was abandoned in 1990 and stood empty for more than 15 years until it was demolished in 2006.

The building changed hands several times over the years. Plans to convert it into a high-end luxurious apartment and condominium structure similar to The Tower, as well as opportunities to restore, reclad, and develop around it, were in the works, but the project was scrapped. Finally in 2006, it was demolished in a controlled way.
