TMC MPs fight like cats and dogs, Kalyan Banerjee congratulates “gentleman who revealed activities of international lady”- Read leaked chats shared by BJP

In an embarrassing turn of events for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT Cell head Amit Malviya shared on X (formerly Twitter) the screenshots of alleged WhatsApp chats between TMC MPs Kirti Azad and Kalyan Banerjee having a war of words. The heated exchange between the two unfolded in the purported official WhatsApp group ‘AITC MP 2024’ of TMC MPs over a woman leader at the Election Commission’s office.

“On 4th April 2024, two TMC MPs had a public spat at the headquarters of the Election Commission of India, where they had gone to submit a representation. It appears the party had instructed its MPs to gather at the Parliament office to sign the memorandum before proceeding to the EC. However, the MP carrying the memorandum skipped the Parliament meeting and went directly to the EC,” Malviya posted on 7th April and in a quoted post, he clarified that the alleged incident unfolded on 4th April 2025, not 2024.

“This angered another MP, who confronted him when they came face to face at the Commission. A heated exchange followed, with the two shouting at each other — so much so that one of them asked the police personnel present to intervene. The matter escalated quickly and reached Mamata Banerjee, who reportedly asked both MPs to stand down,” the BJP leader added.

According to Amit Malviya, the news of clash of TMC MPs soon reached West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, who asked both Banerjee and Azad to exercise restraint.

“But the feud didn’t end there. It spilled over into the ‘AITC MP 2024’ WhatsApp group, where warring camps took sides and traded barbs. And in the middle of it all, the question still lingers: who exactly is the “versatile international lady”? That mystery is one for the world to unravel,” he added.

As per the screenshots of the purported WhatsApp chats between TMC MPs, Kalyan Banerjee took a subtle jibe at Kirti Azad as he wrote, “Today I Congratulate the gentleman who opened the beautiful activities of versatile international lady. That day not a single boyfriend of her stood behind her. This foolish man whom she wanted to be arrested by BSF, stood behind her. Today of course 30 years famous player stood behind her to get me arrested.”

Responding to this, Kirti Azad wrote as per the chat, “Take it easy Kalyan. You have had one too many. Don’t act like a juvenile delinquent. You have been entrusted with a very serious responsibility by Didi to everyone along with you. So relax, have a nice sleep. I have no axe to grind with you. I humbly request you as a senior in age to me, not in politics to kindly take everyone together. Stop your childish and erratic behaviour. Act like an adult. Don’t instigate anybody. Think with the cool mind. Good night.”

In another post, Amit Malviya said that after a verbal altercation inside the ECI’s premises, the clashing TMC MPs continued to slander the “versatile international lady”.

“Soon after the public spat between two TMC MPs in the precincts of the Election Commission of India on 4th April 2025, the irate MP continued slandering the ‘Versatile International Lady (VIL)’… This is the stuff legends are made of!” Malviya posted on X along with short video clips of TMC MPs having a heated exchange.

Owner of the Christian missionary hospital, where 7 people were killed by fake doctor, was represented by Kapil Sibal, Congress MP in forced conversion case

A Christian missionary hospital, run by pastor Ajai Lall in Damoh city of Madhya Pradesh, has come under the scanner after the deaths of at least 7 people. Ajai Lall was previously represented in the Supreme Court by Congress leaders.

The deaths at the hospital were caused during the course of heart surgeries, which were conducted by an alleged ‘fake doctor’ named Narendra Yadav (alias Dr. N John Kem).

Yadav allegedly posed as a ‘cardiologist’ and carried out the surgeries in the hospital run by the Christian pastor.

The incident has created a hullabaloo in Madhya Pradesh, with the Opposition Congress party attacking the ruling BJP government. This is despite the fact that authorities in Damoh had promptly launched an investigation in the case.

It is interesting to note that the allegedly ‘fake doctor’ Narendra Yadav was not just hired but allowed to operate on the patients in the Christian missionary hospital.

The pastor who runs the facility has been represented in the Supreme Court in 2023 by none other than Congress leader Vivek Tankha. He is currently an MP in the Rajya Sabha.

Former Congress leader Kapil Sibal also represented Ajai Lall in the apex court.

On the oral request of Mr Kapil Sibal, senior counsel appearing on behalf of the petitioner, permission is granted to implead the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) as a respondent. Amended cause-title be filed within two days,” read an order copy of the Supreme Court.

Kapil Sibal was representing the Christian pastor as recently as January 2024. Ajai Lall is currently out of India. He was previously spotted alongside another Congress leader Ajay Singh.

The case against Ajai Lall

In November 2022, it was reported that a Dalit couple and their families were forcefully converted to Christianity by Ajai Lall. The victims were harassed by the Church authorities.

The Dalit victims informed that the Church authorities threatened them and demanded four times as much money as they had given earlier during the time of conversion.

“They initially converted us forcefully and gave us money Rs 1,20,000. They also asked us to attend the Church service and stop following the Hindu religion. We initially attended the Church sessions but later we could not. So they began threatening us that if we fail to follow the Christian religion, they’ll recover the amount they had offered earlier, with four times of interest”, the victim said in the video.

Around that time, NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo had filed a complaint against 10 members of the Christian organization named Mid India Christian Society run by Lall.

Kanoongo, in the complaint, had said that several Hindu minor students residing in the children’s home of Mid India Christian Society were converted to Christianity and were forced to stay away from studies.

They were being lured by the missionary authorities to become a pastor in the future.

‘Last week tonight’ host John Oliver defends biological males competing in female sporting events, JK Rowling tells him to “Read the f***ing room”

On 7th April (local time), bestselling author JK Rowling once again expressed her strong views against the inclusion of biological males in women’s and girls’ sports. This time, she publicly criticised comedian and television host John Oliver after he used his HBO platform ‘Last Week Tonight’ to push for the inclusion of biological males in female sports, dismissing concerns around fairness and safety.

In his latest episode, Oliver revisited a previous segment following United States President Donald Trump’s return to office, where he had lambasted the order that banned transgender athletes from competing in the female category.

Oliver said, “There are few trans girls competing in high school sports anywhere,” while brushing aside the growing concerns on a global scale over women losing podiums and scholarships. He claimed, “there is no evidence they pose any threat to safety or fairness.”

Harry Potter author JK Rowling hits back

JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, has long been known for her unwavering stance on women’s rights. She quoted a post containing a video of Oliver supporting biological males’ inclusion and pointed out the irony that his assertions were aired on the same day a women’s pool final was contested between two men. She wrote, “I understand why men like Oliver, who’ve consistently mocked anti-science people on the right, sold out initially,” Rowling said. “But it’s time to read the f**king room,” she added.

A British woman replied to her post saying, “I can’t imagine willingly appearing this stupid for the sake of political correctness.” To which Rowling said, “They’re still regurgitating Twitter TRA talking points from 2020. I can’t imagine anyone being so far up their own backside they haven’t noticed that this nonsensical crap is facing a massive grassroots backlash… and that girls and women are being harmed.”

Mockery over substance – Oliver’s punchlines draw ire

Oliver admitted on-air that the subject was “more complicated”. However, he stuck to his previous claims and, when they last locked horns over the matter, he chose to mock Rowling for her response, joking about her long post and likening himself to a forgotten version of Harry Potter.

Replying to his mockery, JK Rowling wrote, “If you want to tell the world you’re happy to watch females suffer injury, humiliation and the loss of sporting opportunities to bolster an elitist post-modern ideology… fair enough. But maybe rethink using all too real and common sexual predation against young women as a punchline.”

The hypocrisy of the ‘believe the science’ brigade

Rowling also called out the inconsistency of commentators with left-leaning ideology like Oliver, who otherwise ridicule anti-science rhetoric. She wrote, “Again and again I’ve come up against men who argue exactly what Oliver does. Using the very same talking points. With a straight face, the ‘believe the science’ guys will say ‘actually, we don’t yet have enough data to say whether men and boys are stronger and faster than women and girls’.”

The decision to allow the inclusion of trans men in women’s sports has drawn criticism everywhere, as biological men have an advantage when it comes to sports against biological women. Even if a sportsperson has gone through a sex change in the early years, chances are that the woman sportsperson will have a disadvantage on the field. In the past few years, trans men competing in the women’s category have completely destroyed the chance of a woman athlete to win the competition.

Rowling’s stand continues to resonate with many who feel women’s rights and sporting integrity are being sidelined in favour of ideological posturing. As the Harry Potter creator herself put it—perhaps it’s really time to read the f**king room.

10 years of Mudra Yojana: 52 crore loans, nearly 70% women beneficiaries, 1 crore jobs created and more

The Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) completed its 10 successful years on 8th April 2025. The flagship scheme was launched by the central government on this day in 2015. The Mudra Yojana was launched with the aim of providing affordable credit to micro and small enterprises, to empower them and foster financial inclusion.

Taking to X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi published a thread sharing the achievements of MUDRA Yojana over the last decade. “Today, as we mark, #10YearsOfMUDRA, I would like to congratulate all those whose lives have been transformed thanks to this scheme. Over this decade, Mudra Yojana has turned several dreams into reality, empowering people who were previously overlooked with the financial support to shine. It illustrates that for the people of India, nothing is impossible!,” PM Modi posted.

“It is particularly heartening that half of the Mudra beneficiaries belong to SC, ST and OBC Communities, and over 70% of the beneficiaries are women! Every Mudra loan carries with it dignity, self-respect and opportunity. In addition to financial inclusion, this scheme has also ensured social inclusion and economic freedom. In the times to come, our Government will continue focusing on ensuring a robust ecosystem where every aspiring entrepreneur, has access to credit thus giving him or her the confidence and a chance to grow,” the Prime Minister continued.

Achievements under PM Mudra Yojana

The Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) has sanctioned over 52 crore loans worth ₹32.61 lakh crore since its launch in April 2015, fuelling a nationwide entrepreneurial revolution. In an official statement, the Ministry of Finance said: “Business growth is no longer confined to big cities—it is spreading to small towns and villages, where first-time entrepreneurs are taking charge of their destinies. The shift in mindset is evident: people are no longer job seekers; they are becoming job creators.”

Dramatic rise in credit flow

As per an SBI report, a significant rise in credit flow to MSMEs has been driven by Mudra’s impact. MSME lending surged from ₹8.51 lakh crore in FY14 to ₹27.25 lakh crore in FY24, and is projected to cross ₹30 lakh crore in FY25. The share of MSME credit in total bank credit increased from 15.8 percent in FY14 to nearly 20 percent in FY24, showcasing its growing role in the Indian economy. This expansion has enabled businesses in smaller towns and rural areas to access financial support that was previously unavailable, strengthening India’s self-reliant economy and driving grassroots job creation, the Finance Ministry informed.

More than 1 crore jobs were generated between 2015–18 alone through Mudra-supported businesses.

Mudra Yojana empowering women and socially marginalised groups

In what should be counted as one of the biggest achievements under the Mudra Yojana is that out of the total beneficiaries, 68 per cent are women. Mudra Yojana has managed to empower women financially and advance women-led enterprises across the country.

As per the Ministry of Finance, between FY16 and FY25, the per woman PMMY disbursement amount increased at a CAGR of 13 percent, reaching ₹62,679, while per woman incremental deposits grew at a CAGR of 14 percent to ₹95,269. States with higher disbursement share to women have recorded significantly higher employment generation through women-led MSMEs, reinforcing the effectiveness of targeted financial inclusion in enhancing women’s economic empowerment and labour force participation.

In addition to empowering women, the PM Mudra Yojana’s financially inclusive approach has helped break traditional credit barriers. As per an SBI report, 50 percent of Mudra accounts are held by SC, ST and OBC entrepreneurs, ensuring wider access to formal finance. Furthermore, 11 percent of Mudra loan holders belong to minority communities, demonstrating the scheme’s contribution to inclusive growth by enabling marginalised communities to become active participants in the formal economy.

Mudra Yojana facilitated 52 crore loan accounts opening over the last decade

Over the past ten years, Mudra Yojana facilitated the opening of over 52 crore loan accounts, marking a steady rise in entrepreneurial activity. The share of Kishor loans (₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh) has grown from 5.9 percent in FY16 to 44.7 percent in FY25, indicating a shift from micro to small enterprises. The Tarun category (₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh) is also gaining momentum, proving that Mudra is not just about starting businesses but helping them scale.

If we look at the total loans sanctioned and disbursed under Mudra Yojana, its Unique Selling Proposition has been well received by a diverse base of intended beneficiaries, thereby strengthening the economic influence of the bottom of the pyramid.

Government data shows that the average ticket size of loans has nearly tripled—rising from ₹38,000 in FY16 to ₹72,000 in FY23, and further to ₹1.02 lakh in FY25, reflecting growing economies of scale and a deepening of both market depth and width.

In addition, loan disbursal rose by 36 percent in FY23, indicating a strong revival of entrepreneurial confidence across the country.

Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh top 2 states with the highest Mudra loan disbursal

The Union Ministry of Finance said in its statement that as of 28th February 2025, Tamil Nadu has recorded the highest disbursal among states at ₹3,23,647.76 crore. Uttar Pradesh follows with ₹3,14,360.86 crore, while Karnataka ranks third with ₹3,02,146.41 crore. West Bengal and Bihar have also seen significant disbursals of ₹2,82,322.94 crore and ₹2,81,943.31 crore, respectively. Maharashtra stands sixth at ₹2,74,402.02 crore, reflecting the scheme’s broad reach and impact across key states over the past decade.

Meanwhile, among Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir leads with a total disbursal of ₹45,815.92 crore across 21,33,342 loan accounts.

Across the country, lives have transformed. Kamlesh, a home-based tailor in Delhi, expanded her work, employed three other women, and enrolled her children in a good school. Bindu, who began with 50 brooms a day, now leads a unit producing 500. These are not exceptions anymore. They reflect a larger shift, as per the Ministry.

From stitching units and tea stalls to salons, mechanic shops, and mobile repair businesses, crores of micro-entrepreneurs have stepped forward with confidence, enabled by a system that believed in their potential. PMMY has supported these journeys by offering institutional credit to non-corporate, non-farm micro and small enterprises that form the backbone of India’s economy, it said.

Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana has successfully transformed lives by funding the unfunded, boosting entrepreneurship as well as fostering a sustainable ecosystem for micro-enterprises. The Mudra Yojana has come across has a significant contributor to India’s economic growth and a promoter of socio-financial empowerment and inclusiveness.

Jaipur hit and run case: Congress functionary Usman runs over several people near Santoshi Mata Temple while drunk, 2 dead and 7 injured

A tragic incident in Jaipur’s Nahargarh area resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to seven others after they were hit by Usman who was driving while intoxicated. The incident took place near the Santoshi Mata Temple in the area.

Usman was reportedly a member of Congress in Jaipur, Rajasthan.

Usman was reportedly speeding at around 70-80 km/h in a crowded area between 9:00 to 9:30 pm on 7th April. The car smashed into everything in its way, including two-wheelers, parked cars, and pedestrians causing mayhem in the crowded marketplace.

The victims, a man and a woman, died at the scene, while the wounded were taken to the hospital, according to police reports. One person passed away on the spot while the second died after reaching the hospital, despite efforts to save the life. Four others remain in treatment at a local trauma centre. Three individuals have since been discharged from the hospital.

BJP MLA Balmukund Acharya has said that the culprit Usman is a Congress functionary and he deliberately did it. He has demanded that Usman should be hanged till death and bulldozer action should be initiated against him.

A man on a scooter pursued the perpetrator, eventually catching up to the vehicle and seizing the steering wheel. He was pulled a considerable distance but was able to turn the steering before the four-wheeler crashed into a barricade and came to a halt after which the offender left the vehicle and ran away from the scene but he was apprehended later.

Usman did not appear to slow down when it approached the crowded area, according to witnesses. The car was seen rushing down the road in CCTV footage, colliding with oncoming vehicles and people. A large crowd gathered at the scene as word of the incident spread. Disgruntled locals demonstrated against the careless driving that frequently occurs in the narrow streets in the area. The mob angrily vandalized the car as police attempted to tow it to the police station. More police personnel from neighboring stations had to be called to keep the situation under control. The SMS Police Station Sub-Inspector, Kanhaiyalal, confirmed the details of the incident.

Witnesses revealed that the accused initially hit a pedestrian and a motorbike close to the crossing of the Nahargarh police station. He then smashed a bike and another pedestrian as he raced in the direction of the Santoshi Mata Temple. He knocked another individual further down the road and then ran away. A bicycle also got lodged beneath the vehicle. Sparks flared up off the road as the man sped off, trapping the bike. A three-year-old girl is among the injured, per BJP MLA Balmukund Acharya.

Fake fingerprint and Iris scan data, fake UIDAI website and fraudulent claims: How Sambhal Police busted gang that ran a AADHAR forgery network

The Sambhal authorities have exposed a pan India gang and arrested 4 people involved in making fraudulent changes to Aadhar Cards. The matter came to light when a case of fraud was reported at the Bahjoi police station, on 2nd March. Chandrasen, a resident of Bahrauli village, accused Vinod, son of Pancham Singh, of deceitfully acquiring a tractor in the name of his terminally ill son. After he passed away, the tractor was illicitly sold to another party. Additionally, Vinod reportedly forged documents using his father’s identity to obtain a policy under the PMJJBY (Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana) from which he gained financial benefits.

The Bahjoi police registered a case following the allegation and commenced an investigation which uncovered a shocking scam. Now, a gang has been exposed that was operating a racket across multiple districts, going door-to-door collecting Aadhaar biometric as well as demographic data and then used it to carry out unauthorized modifications. Four individuals have been arrested from the Badaun and Amroha districts. Several items were recovered from them, including laptops, computer systems and multiple devices used for obtaining biometric data.

The authorities confiscated a variety of items, including counterfeit rubber fingerprints, copies of iris scans, forged passports, 42 fraudulent birth certificates from 13 states, a tampered fingerprint scanning device, mobile phones, 36 PAN card application forms, 27 forms for fingerprint updates and more than 400 Aadhaar enrollment applications intended for alterations. Furthermore, eight passport-sized photographs were also retrieved.

The criminal group had developed a portal that closely mimicked the UIDAI web portal through coding. This bogus site was utilized by multiple retailers acting as Aadhaar service centers, enabling them to make unauthorized changes to Aadhaar information of people.

During the investigation of Vinod and the examination of his mobile device, cops discovered two Aadhaar cards registered under the name of Pancham Singh. Both shared the same Aadhaar number but displayed differing dates of birth, one recorded as 01.01.1955 and the other as 01.07.1976. Additionally, it was revealed that Pancham Singh’s Aadhaar card was associated with Vinod’s mobile phone.

A review of the update history on the UIDAI website indicated that the date of birth had been intentionally modified to make him appear 21 years younger. During questioning, Vinod admitted to paying ₹3000 to facilitate this alteration, aiming to present his father’s age as under 50 years to qualify for the PMJJBY (Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana) scheme.

The gang began its operations in 2023. It all started when Ashish, who was previously involved in Aadhaar update services, met a person named Kasim who revealed that there was a lucrative opportunity in fake Aadhaar updates. He explained that many people were willing to pay thousands of rupees to unlawfully change details like age or address on their Aadhaar cards. Kasim taught Ashish how to modify fingerprint scanners so that individuals could update their Aadhaar details from home.

They tampered with Mantra-brand scanning machines to achieve this and created a fake website that resembled the official Aadhaar portal. Kasim is originally from Wazirabad, Timarpur Police Station area in New Delhi and was residing in the Nai Basti locality of Naugawan Sadat, Amroha.

Ashish from Adoli village, Dharmendra Kumar from Baini Nagla and Raunak from Nizampur, each from the Ujhani police station area of Badaun district were also part of this gang. They were involved in making fraudulent modifications to Aadhaar data. Several other individuals are also suspected to be linked with the gang and the police are actively searching for them. The gang had a member who was skilled in coding and web designing and developed the fake Aadhaar portal. Retailers employed this portal to collect people’s fingerprints and data, which they then forwarded to the gang.

Since changes in Aadhaar can only be made using the ID of an authorized operator, the gang either lured these operators with incentives or fraudulently gained access to their credentials. The members of this gang have been involved in the crime for the past one and a half years. During this time, they have altered the mobile numbers linked to over 1,500 Aadhaar cards and have made fake changes to Aadhaar details using more than 400 fabricated documents.

In December 2024, after attempts to update age through the submission of birth certificates proved unsuccessful, the gang resorted to using counterfeit passports to modify the date of birth on Aadhaar cards. They established a fraudulent web portal, crafted by a gang member with web development skills. Multiple such portals were created and by February 2025, they had produced and uploaded over 20 fake passports for Aadhaar modifications, achieving success in several instances.

Ashish took on the role of a vendor, managing a network of 200 to 300 retailers. The group exploited a counterfeit portal to upload data to the official UIDAI portal, utilizing modified fingerprint scanning technology. They also contacted legitimate Aadhaar service centers to procure their details and credentials. They had previously created rubber replicas of the fingerprints and iris scans belonging to Aadhaar operators.

They even incentivized the operators with ₹50 for each individual under the guise of “data correction” which enabled them to obtain OTPs from the Aadhaar service centers for system access. The accused also disabled GPS devices so that any computer would appear authorized.

The anatomy of a coverup: A deep-dive into the execution of 2016 West Bengal SSC scam, CBI findings and court verdicts

The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) case is one of the biggest recruitment scams, carried out under the watch of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government.

The recruitments were made in 2016 for positions of Assistant Teachers for Classes 9-12 and non-teaching staff in Groups C and D. Written examinations, interviews/ personality tests were conducted as part of the initiative to fill the vacancies.

The WBSSC had tasked a company named ‘Nysa Communications’ to scan the Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets of the candidates and assess the results, which helped execute the recruitment scam.

Allegations against the West Bengal School Service Commission

From the very onset, the selection process was fraught with a lack of transparency. WBSSC did not upload a common list of candidates with their respective marks (both during the initial and final stages).

No age relaxations were granted during the exams in contravention of existing norms, which kickstarted the saga of writ petitions in court. One Baishakhi Bhattacharyya became the first to file a case against WBSSC in 2016.

By 2021, several discrepancies came to light in the manner in which 25,753 individuals were appointed by the WBSSC for the positions of Assistant Teachers and non-teaching staff. The key allegations included:

  1. Rank jumping – Candidates ranked lower in the merit list were preferred over those with higher marks.
  2. Pick and choose method in selecting candidates
  3. Candidates who were neither in the merit list nor on the waiting list were appointed
  4. Non-tainted candidates were issued appointment letters but not allowed to join their jobs

Committee unearths the fraud of WBSSC officials

A 4-member committee was formed to verify appointments of non-teaching staff under Groups C and D under the chairmanship of retired Justice Ranjit Kumar Bag. The committee also comprised WBSSC representatives, the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and an Advocate.

The committee found glaring discrepancies and accused officials of the Central Commission of criminal conspiracy (IPC Section 120 B), forgery (IPC Sections 465 and 468), cheating (IPC Section 417) and gross dereliction of duty.

It was discovered that the Central Commission changed the rank of candidates, resorted to manipulation and involved illegal procedure in appointments to non-teaching staff under Groups C and D.

The 4-member committee recommended criminal action/ FIR against 5 officials, namely Saumitra Sarkar, Ashok Kumar Saha, Dr. Santi Prasad Sinha, Dr. Kalyanmoy Ganguly, and Samarjit Acharya.

Investigation by the CBI

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) found that ‘Nysa Communications’ was selected by WBSSC through a closed-door tender process, thereby flouting existing rules.

‘Nysa Communications’ hired another agency by the name of ‘Data Scantech’ without written permission from WBSSC.

After the scanning of OMR sheets was done, Nysa Communications took the data along with them on hard drives to their Noida Office. The physical copies of the OMR sheets were left at the WBSSC office.

During the investigation process, the CBI had seized the server database of the WBSSC pertaining to the 2016 recruitment exams.

The central agency recovered 3 hard disks from the residence of an ex-employee of Nysa Communications named Pankaj Bansal in 2022. And thus the recruitment scam became crystal clear.

“That, a similar exercise of matching the data available on the hard disks of Pankaj Bansal with the data seized from the Commission was done during the course of investigation and it was found that there were mismatch between the two, in as much as, the written marks awarded to candidates as available on the server of the commission had been increased
to qualify undeserving candidates. This mismatch establishes that manipulation in marks of written examination in the case of many candidates was resorted to and such candidates were identified,” the CBI said in its report.

The central agency also found emails exchanged by accused WBSSC officials, Nysa Communication employees and other individuals that further exposed manipulation of data of candidates.

It further added, “Investigation revealed that WBCSSC had destroyed the original OMR sheets and the scanned images of original OMR sheets in the year 2019, which again leads to an inference that the same were destroyed to keep the entire scan under wraps.

The CBI discovered that West Bengal government, led by Mamata Banerjee, further rewarded Niladri Das (an ex-employee of Nysa Communication and executioner of the recruitment scam) with several recruitment projects.

It found manipulation in OMR sheets in the following 4 instances:

  • 952 Assistant Teachers for Classes 9 and 10
  • 907 Assistant Teachers for Classes 11 and 12,
  • 3481 non-teaching staff belonging to Group C
  • 2823 non-teaching staff belonging to Group D

The anatomy of a coverup ft. WBSSC

The West Bengal School Service Commission failed to produce the original OMR sheets of the appointed candidates, claiming that they were destroyed.

It had submitted scanned copies of OMR sheets to RTI applicants from 2018 to 2023, but later claimed in court not to have retained them.

WBSSC also made 2,355 more appointments than available vacancies for both Assistant Teachers (Classes 9-12) and non-teaching staff in Groups C and D. It later sought permission to create ‘supernumerary posts’ to accommodate the illegal appointees.

As per the findings, WBSSC appointed individuals who submitted blank OMR sheets and had secured low ranks. It continued appointing candidates illegally beyond the expiry of the recruitment panel.

The West Bengal School Service Commission violated existing rules by destroying physical OMR sheets for non-teaching staff (Groups C and D) in 2019.

WBSSC had admitted the following in multiple court affidavits:

  1. Rank jumping
  2. Out-of-panel appointments
  3. Appointment of candidates not recommended by it
  4. Manipulation of the OMR scores.

It has further acknowledged the following data:

  • Illegal appointment of 1,498 out-of-panel candidates
  • Involvement of 926 candidates in rank jumping
  • Recommendation of 4091 candidates despite OMR mismatch
  • Involvement of 239 candidates in both OMR mismatch and other illegalities

This puts the total number of illegal appointments at 6,276. However, there is no guarantee that it is an exhaustive list given that WBSSC destroyed the physical copies of OMR sheets and did not retain the scanned copies.

Verdict by the Calcutta High Court

In April 2024, a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court set aside 25,752 recruitments made by the West Bengal School Service Commission in 2016. Only one candidate named Soma Das (cancer survivor), was allowed to retain her job.

The court held that the appointments violated Articles 14 (equality before the law) and 16 (equality of opportunity in matters of public employment) of the Indian Constitution and thus declared it null and void in its entirety.

The Calcutta High Court directed tainted candidates to return the salaries and benefits to the State government with 12% interest within 4 weeks. It further asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the matter.

Moreover, the court directed the WBSSC to undertake a fresh recruitment process.

Verdict by the Supreme Court of India

In May 2024, the Supreme Court of India stayed the order of the Calcutta High Court, wherein it directed the cancellation of 25,752 appointments. It, however refused to put a stay on the CBI investigation in the case.

“The public job is so scarce….Nothing remains if the faith of the public goes. This is systemic fraud. Public jobs are extremely scarce today and are looked at for social mobility. What remains in the system if their appointments are also maligned? People will lose faith, how do you countenance this?” the apex court noted.

“Either you have the data or you do not have it…You were duty-bound to maintain the documents in digitised form. Now, it is obvious that there is no data. You are unaware of the fact that your service provider has engaged another agency. You had to maintain supervisory control,” it further added.

On 3rd April 2025, the Supreme Court of India upheld [pdf] the verdict of the Calcutta High Court and noted systemic irregularities, malaise/ fraud in the 2016 WBSSC recruitment case. Due to a compromise in the overall integrity of the recruitment process, it was cancelled in its entirety.

In our opinion, this is a case wherein the entire selection process has been vitiated and tainted beyond resolution. Manipulations and frauds on a large scale, coupled with the attempted cover-up, have dented the selection process beyond repair and partial redemption. The credibility and legitimacy of the selection are denuded,” the apex court observed.

The WBSSC had argued that the entire recruitment process should not be annulled. The Supreme Court, however found no merit in the argument.

We may have accepted this argument if WBSSC had the original physical OMR sheets or the mirror copy of the OMR sheets. However, WBSSC accepts that they do not have the physical OMR sheets as they were destroyed in terms of
Rule 21 of the Class IX and X and Class XI and XII Rules, which require retention of the OMR sheets for only one year
,” it added.

The apex court further pointed out that there was no rationale behind destroying the OMR sheets for Group C and D employees, given that the recruitment was underway even after the validity of the recruitment panel had expired.

It also underlined the illegality in the extension of the recruitment panel. “There is no doubt that the counselling process and appointments made to the post of Assistant Teachers for classes IX-X and XI-XII were made after the expiry of the panel. This is illegal and contrary to the rules,” the Supreme Court observed.

On the occasion of Ram Navami (6th April), some of the activists of Maharaja Suheldev Samman Suraksha Manch (MSSSM) climbed atop the Dargah of Syed Salar Masud Ghazi and waved saffron flags in the Baharia area of Prayagraj. The Islamo-leftists have found a golden opportunity to peddle their ‘minority khatre mein hai’ narrative simply because the Hindu activists decided not to accept the sanctity of a shrine dedicated to a long-dead Islamic tyrant and plunderer, who destroyed Hindu temples, forcibly converted Hindus to Islam and looted wealth.

In their desperation to villainise Hindus for not being tolerant enough to let a Dargah named after a Hindu-hating Islamic fanatic exist, the Islamists on social media claim that the alleged shrine wherein the MSSSM activists waved saffron flags is a mosque.

Taking to X, crowdfunding scam accused propagandist Rana Ayyub claimed that ‘Hindu nationalists’ climbed on top of a “mosque” in Uttar Pradesh. Ayyub calls herself a ‘journalist’; however, she did not care to get her facts straight, that the structure the Hindu men climbed atop is not a mosque but a Dargah, that too of a dead Islamic fanatic who killed Hindus and destroyed their temples, including the Somnath Temple.

Similarly, Aasif Mujtaba, the co-conspirator of Sharjeel Imam, one of the Islamists who orchestrated the onslaught against Hindus during the Delhi anti-Hindu riots of 2020, took to X and claimed that the religious structure in question is a mosque. “From the provocative slogans & dance in front of Masjid to forceful hoisting of bhagwa flag on the mosque, the same story is being repeated for decades. Will state police take strict action against these goons?” Mujtaba posted.

One Zayd Malik invoked the ‘Islamophobia’ card and claimed, “On Ramnavami extremist Hindus created a lot of ruckus by climbing on the roof of Salar Masood Ghazi’s dargah. This has become a routine. Hindu extremists Climbing in roof of Mosque, Dargah and waving Hindutva flag.”

Meanwhile, one Dr. Medusa, who chooses to remain conspicuously silent when Islamist mobs attack Hindu procession for simply having entered ‘Muslim area’ or when Muslim mobs dance and raise inflammatory slogans in front of Hindu temples, asserted that for Hindus, their festivities are incomplete without mosques.

“Maine kaha tha na? Masjid nahi hoga to inke tyohaar kahan manaane jayenge? [Didn’t I say it? If there will be no mosques, where will their (Hindus) festivals be celebrated?], Medusa posted.

Is the structure dedicated to Salar Masud in Prayagraj a mosque?

While the Islamists are suggesting that ‘Hindu nationalists’ or ‘Hindutva goons’ climbed atop a “mosque”, in reality, it is not a mosque but a shrine named after Ghazi Syed Salar Masud. It is not even his grave or mazar. Masud’s original grave is in Bahraich, where he was slain by Hindu warrior king Maharaja Suheldev in the fierce Battle of Bahraich in 1034 CE near Chittaura Lake. The structure in Prayagraj was constructed much later and has no direct historical connection with Salar Masud. In simple words, it is a fake shrine with no historical context or relevance, although the existence of such shrines dedicated to those who persecuted Hindus demonstrates that present-day Islamists continue to revere and draw inspiration from long-dead foreign Islamic invaders.

While Salar Masud’s original ‘grave’ is situated in Baharaich, several shrines named after him are built in different parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Bhadohi, Muzaffarangar and Prayagraj.

Who was Syed Salar Masud?

Ghazi Syed Salar Masud was the nephew of barbaric invader Mahmud of Ghaznavi. He was an Islamic fanatic and an infamous plunderer who deserves condemnation and not garlands and hushed reverence. Islamists eulogize Ghazi Salar Masud as a “martyr” who died fighting the “kafirs”. The fact is that Salar Masud was a fanatic who, under the tutelage of his uncle, Mahmud of Ghaznavi, took pleasure in the rampant massacre of Hindus. In his lifetime in the 11th century, Salar Masud carried out mass conversions and executions of Hindus. According to Mirat-i-Masudi, Salar Masud plundered and destroyed Hindu temples and Mutts, including the sacred Suraj Kund at Bahraich, as he went ahead to conquer various parts of India until Raja Suheldev finally halted his advent. It is said that Salar Masud wanted to build a mosque over the rubble of the Sun temple in Bahraich, however, his dream remained unfulfilled as King Suheldev killed him.

In 1026 CE, during the destruction of the famous Somnath Temple, Mahmud of Ghaznavi was accompanied by his 11-year-old nephew Syed Salar Masud. After the death of Mahmud Ghaznavi, Masud invaded India in May 1031 CE with a 100,000-strong army. He had imbibed the fanaticism and barbarism of his uncle.

Interestingly, Salar Masud’s anti-Hindu credentials have already undergone a phase of whitewashing, as the long-dead Hindu-hater and plunderer’s image has been transformed into that of a righteous and truthful ‘Sufi saint’. His original dargah in Bahraich holds annual Urs and attracts visitors from Muslim, Hindu and Sikh communities who offer prayers and seek ‘Mannat’ here while remaining oblivious to the bloodied history and anti-Hindu deeds of Salar Masud Ghazi.

What was the precursor to the incident of Hindu activists climbing atop the Dargah named after Salar Masud?

Maharaja Suheldev Suraksha Samman Manch’s activists have long been raising the demand to raze the so-called Dargah in Prayagraj’s Sikandra town in the Baharia Block. The Hindu activists have alleged that the dargah in question is constructed illegally. Manendra Pratap Singh, the former Karni Sena leader, stressed that there should be no place for the dargah of foreign Islamic invaders and demanded that the shrine in question be demolished.

At the said Dargah of Salar Masud, a Roza fair is held in which Hindus and Muslims come. The dispute started on 23rd March, when the police locked the dargah on behalf of Roza Mela Committee President Safdar Javed. However, in the evening, Javed issued a statement that the lock was put on due to repair work. The lock was opened the next day on 24th March, and later people started coming there. However, on 30th March, the day of the fair, barricading was done again and a police force was deployed. Moreover, the Mela was also not organised.

On Sunday, Maharaja Suheldev Samman Suraksha Manch activists, led by Manendra Pratap Singh, reached the dargah with saffron flags and started raising slogans. Some of them climbed the dome of the main gate of the dargah and started waving saffron flags.

In an interesting revelation, the Prayagraj Police has issued a statement saying that the Dargah of Salar Masud had Samadhis of 5 Hindus. In his statement, DCP Kuldeep Singh Gunawat did not even mention Salar Masud or Ghazi Miyan; rather,  he said that the site in question has graves of 5 Hindus, including those of Bade Purush Parihar, Jodha Parihar, Sati, Baba Bairana, Pehru Baba, among others. He added that the ‘dargah’ is mostly visited by Hindus, while some Muslims also come here.

The officer further stated that Departmental action is being initiated against local police officials for negligence and further investigation in the matter is underway.

Muhammad Yunus, whose elevation to Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser was backed by the West, urges US President Donald Trump to postpone tariff measures

Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has addressed a letter to US President Donald J Trump requesting him to postpone the application of US reciprocal tariff measures on Bangladesh for three months to allow the interim government to smoothly implement its initiative to substantially increase US exports to Bangladesh, the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing said in a statement on Monday.

“We are the first country to take such a pro-active initiative,” he said in his letter, citing the visit of High Representative Dr Khalilur Rahman to Washington DC in February.

Ever since, the two sides have been working closely to identify specific actions, the statement said.

Bangladesh is also the first country to enter into a multi-year agreement to import liquefied natural gas from the US, it added. The centrepiece of Bangladesh’s actions is to significantly increase imports of US agricultural products such as cotton, wheat, corn and soybean which will offer benefits to US farmers, the statement said.

Bangladesh has the lowest tariff on most US exports in the South Asian region. The Chief Adviser indicated further tariff cuts on US products are being fashioned, including top US export items such as gas turbines, semiconductors and medical equipment.

Bangladesh will build dedicated duty-free bonded warehouses for cotton to improve speed to market.

“We are eliminating certain testing requirements, rationalising packaging, labelling and certification requirements and undertaking trade facilitation measures such as simplifying customs procedures and standards,” the Chief Adviser added.

“Bangladesh will take all necessary actions to fully support your trade agenda,” Professor Yunus assured President Trump.

A separate letter detailing the actions by Bangladesh will be sent by the Commerce Adviser to the US Trade Representative soon, the statement said.

Days after PM Modi’s Lex Fridman podcast, Rahul Gandhi changes tune from ‘Union of States’ to ‘Civilisational nation’: Political opportunism or a newfound realisation?

In Indian politics, consistency is often the first casualty of electoral drubbings. Rahul Gandhi, the perennial face of the Congress party, long known for his doctrinaire interpretation of India as a mere “Union of States,” has now pivoted to a more nuanced–or should we say, a reluctant endorsement of what PM Modi recently affirmed in his podcast with Lex Fridman—that India is a civilisational entity that dates back thousands of years.

Nevertheless, Gandhi’s recent remarks at the Samvidhan Suraksha Sammelan in Patna mark a telltale departure from his earlier rhetoric and reflect a broader evolution or perhaps recalibration of his ideological compass.

For years, Gandhi tirelessly espoused the view that India was a collection of administrative units fused only by the Constitution of 1950. This narrative, rooted in a selective reading of Article 1—”India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States”—has been used to argue against a strong centralised identity, often playing into regionalist sentiments and linguistic divides, something which Congress has been desperately trying to exploit, especially with Gandhi’s repeated demands of ‘Caste Survey’ and polarising slogans of ‘Jiski Jitni Aabadi Uska Utna Haq’.

Notwithstanding the theatrics that Gandhi routinely lends himself to, his remarks have attracted strident criticism from several quarters, with many accusing him of undermining national unity, favouring a Balkanized imagination of India over its deeply rooted cultural cohesion.

But that narrative, it seems, is undergoing a metamorphosis—not in a vacuum, but against the backdrop of repeated electoral humiliations and setbacks faced by the Congress party across the length and breadth of the country. As Congress fails to capture the imagination of the nation’s teeming youth, with desertions being a recurrent theme throughout the party hierarchy, Gandhi is perhaps forced to swivel away from this divisive ideology to a country whose consciousness dates back centuries and with several preeminent individuals playing a part in nurturing it.

With Congress losing ground across state after state and failing to effectively counter the Modi-led BJP juggernaut, Rahul Gandhi appears to be recalibrating both his message and his method.

At the Patna event, Gandhi did what he often does – brandish the Constitution and sound alarm bells over its supposed impending demise. However, embedded within his familiar script was a surprising admission that caught both supporters and skeptics off the hop.

“People say that the Constitution was drafted in 1947. However, I believe that this Constitution is thousands of years old, and it includes thoughts of Ambedkar ji, Phule ji, Gandhi ji, Nehru ji, Guru Nanak ji and Kabir,” he said.

This was not just a rhetorical flourish. It was a marked withdrawal from his past insistence on the Constitution as the singular starting point of the Indian nation. By invoking names like Guru Nanak, Kabir, and other civilizational icons, Gandhi implicitly acknowledged what has been seared on the memories of Indians since time immemorial– that the country’s cultural and philosophical fabric predates 1947 by millennia. That its identity is not just political, but civilizational.

It was a remarkable climbdown for a leader who had been hard-selling the notion that India came into existence as a nation only decades ago, when the Constitution sanctioned it as the ‘Union of States’ in its Preamble. However, even as Gandhi went into raptures about India’s timeless civilisational continuity, invoking the likes of Kabir, Guru Nanak, and Ambedkar as part of India’s “thousands-of-years-old Constitution,” Gandhi seemingly left out highlighting the role played by the likes of Adi Shankaracharyas, Swami Vivekananda, and others in cultivating and fostering Hindu civilisational ethos that forms the bedrock of India’s collective consciousness.

In disregarding the sacrifices and contributions made by Hindu cultural heroes, Gandhi ignored those who gave their everything in forging a resilient consciousness that not only stood the test of time but also braved successive waves of attacks, first by the Middle East consciousness in the form of brutal invasions from Turushka, Mongol, and Afghan invaders, and then by the Christian consciousness in the form of British Raj in India; and yet, managed to keep its intrinsic nature not only intact but also flourishing, finding expression in innovative ways to retain its essence in collective consciousness.

What PM Modi said about India’s civilizational continuity on the Lex Fridman podcast

Compare this with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s articulation of India’s civilizational identity during his interview with Lex Fridman. There, Modi described India not as a mere geographical or political entity, but as a cultural and civilisational force.

“India is a cultural identity. It is a civilization that dates back thousands of years,” he said, highlighting the profound diversity of India — linguistic, regional, ritualistic — all bound by an invisible yet indelible thread.

Modi spoke of shared traditions and symbolism — the omnipresence of Lord Ram across all corners of India, the ritual invocation of the universe from Jambudweep to Bharatkhand in religious ceremonies, the continuity of family deities and ancestral customs — as examples of how India’s civilizational memory has remained alive and vibrant.

“From the south to the north, you will see immense diversity. But if you dig a little deeper, you will find a common thread,” Modi observed, pointing to the unity under the veneer of India’s biosterous diversity.

Seen in this context, Gandhi’s recent shift in tone appears to be a grudging acknowledgment of a view that Modi and others have championed for years: that India is far more than a modern post-colonial republic — it is a civilizational nation with roots that run deep into antiquity.

The cynic may call it opportunism; the optimist, evolution. Either way, Rahul Gandhi’s tune has changed — and it’s set to a more ancient rhythm. Whether he truly believes in the beat or is merely following the music remains to be seen. But in a political landscape where cultural confidence often trumps procedural semantics, acknowledging India’s civilisational soul might be the first step toward political relevance. It nevertheless begs an important question: What has prompted this sudden change of heart in the Gandhi scion to shun his ‘politically tutored’ ‘Union of States’ narrative for ‘India as a civilisational entity’?

Rahul Gandhi’s pivot: A genuine transformation or an instance of political opportunism

The short answer: reality. Congress has failed to galvanise the public with its previous messaging. The relentless invocation of “Union of States” may have appealed to a narrow set of intellectuals and Constitution purists, but it fell flat among an electorate that increasingly takes pride in belonging to a millennia-old, shared, and ancient civilisation—one that has been hailed by neutral historians of all hues as the fount of timeless wisdom, spiritual depth, and philosophical contemplations—and was unencumbered by narrow divisions of language, religion, caste, and region.

Moreover, the Congress’ inability to pin down the Modi government on substantial issues has pushed it back toward theatrics – the waving of the Constitution, the positioning of oneself as the guardians of the rights, the dramatics of democracy-in-danger narratives – all of which now seem hollow without a compelling vision of India’s past, present, and future.

Rahul Gandhi’s about-face, therefore, appears more tactical than transformative. It is a recognition that a nation cannot be mobilized merely on administrative semantics. People want a deeper identity – one rooted in tradition, culture, and collective consciousness. And that identity, ideologically inconvenient as it may have once been for the Congress ecosystem, is civilisational.

The conception of India as a ‘Union of States’ vis-a-vis its imagination as a civilisational entity strikes at the heart of the ongoing identity discourse. While the ‘Union of States’ narrative describes India as a ragtag mixture of several mini-civilisations belonging to different regions and espousing different languages and cultures, reducing the lived experiences of communities to a mere constitutional mandate, weaponising identity politics, which ultimately poses a grave threat to the geographical unity of the country as witnessed in the ongoing language wrangling in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the civilisational entity defines India as a nation firmly bonded together by a thread that binds differing traditions and cultures in one geographical contour with shared experiences while simultaneously keeping their individuality intact.

Whether this pivot is permanent or a politically transient maneuver remains to be seen. But if Rahul Gandhi has indeed begun to comprehend the essence of Bharat—not just as a constitutional arrangement but as a timeless cultural entity—then the Modi government would have yet again succeeded in shifting the Overton window, one that would likely mark the beginning of the opposition’s more mature engagement with Indian nationhood. Or, it could simply be another instance of political opportunism dressed up as ideological evolution aimed at scrubbing clean Congress’s historical dismissal of India’s civilisational consciousness.

Either way, the tune has changed – and in Indian politics, that’s always worth noticing.
