More authors withdraw their books from Bloomsbury after the withdrawal of Delhi riots book by the publishing house, others commit to never work with them

After publishing house Bloomsbury announced that they are not going to print the book ‘Delhi Riots 2020: An Untold Story’, many authors decided to discontinue their association with them. Now, more authors have announced that they withdrawing their books from the publishing house.

Shefali Vaidya and Nityananda Mishra have announced the same, and Shantanu Gupta is reconsidering his association with them.

In a series of tweets, Shefali Vaidya said that as a contracted writer with Bloomsbury she is disappointed with the way they behaved with Adv Monika Arora, the author of the book on Delhi Riots. She added that the publishing house had a contract with her and went through the whole process of publishing it. The book was currently in printing when they decided to pull the plug.

Vaidya further said that if she will self publish her upcoming books if needed. “I will self-publish my book if I have to, but I will NOT allow my creativity and freedom of expression to be killed by an incestuous clique of Mullah-Marxist-Missionaries,” she added.

Nityananda Misra’s “Sunāma: Beautiful Sanskrit Names” was planned to be launched soon under Bloomsbury’s banner. He, however, has decided to put the project with them on hold and asked them to reconsider their decision with the book on Delhi Riots. In a letter to Bloomsbury, he said, “If Bloomsbury India sticks with its decision o not publish “Delhi Riots 2020: The Untold Story”, then I will not be publishing “Sunāma: Beautiful Sanskrit Names” and any of my future books with Bloomsbury India.”

Shantanu Gupta, author of “The Monk Who Became CM” also expressed his displeasure over the decision taken by the publishing house. He said, “I am shocked at their recent act of censorship of a book at the last moment. I am strongly re-considering my association with them.”

Yesterday, Anand Ranganathan, Sandeep Deo and Sanjay Dixit had announced withdrawal of their books from Bloomsbury, while Sanjeev Sanyal and Harsh Maddhusudan had committed to never work with them in future.

It is believed that more authors will follow and withdraw their association with the publishing house for their unethical behaviour in withdrawing the book.

IIPM Director and Mamata Banerjee sympathiser Arindam Chaudhuri arrested for tax evasion

Arindam Chaudhuri, the director of Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM), was arrested on Friday by the tax officials after unduly claiming the payment of service tax to the tune of Rs 23 crore.

According to the reports, the Central Goods & Services Tax (CGST) South Delhi Commissionerate arrested him on Friday under Section 89 of the Finance Act which enlists penalties for evading payment of service tax. Chaudhuri was arrested over exceedingly claiming the payment of Central Value Added Tax (CENVAT) service tax credit of about Rs 23 crore.

Chaudhuri had made a credit entry of CENVAT of around Rs 23 crore as there was a shortage of funds to pay the service tax. He showed the amount in next year’s balance sheets, but he never paid it.

Gurudas Malik Thakur, Chaudhuri’s colleague and also another director of IIPM, was also arrested under the same section and sent to 14 days judicial custody. The tax officials produced them before duty magistrate Jyoti Maheshwari in the Patiala House Court, and they were granted judicial custody of 14 days. They will be produced before the court again on 3rd September.

Reportedly, the tax officials have begun an investigation and are likely to cover other properties held by Chaudhuri and his company in Delhi, including overseas properties.

Earlier, he was arrested on March 14 and later granted bail after he had allegedly submitted a forged medical certificate when police had asked him to join an investigation in connection with a 2016 case.

Arindam Chaudhuri, a Mamata Banerjee sympathiser

Arindam Chaudhuri, who is now accused of illegal tax claims, is a well known supporter and sympathiser of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

In the past, he has written editorials and blogs hailing Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress. Interestingly, Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of Mamata Banerjee had an MBA degree from Chaudhuri’s IIPM.

Last year, just after the Lok Sabha elections, a controversy had erupted after Abhishek Banerjee had furnished wrong details about his educational qualifications in the affidavit submitted by him during elections. A complaint was registered with the election officials alleging that in 2014 elections, Banerjee has submitted in the affidavit that he has completed his MBA degree from IIPM university which is not recognised.

In 2015, IIPM went defunct after it was found that the institute was offering MBA degrees to students on false pretences. In a landmark judgement in 2014, the Delhi High Court had categorically asked IIPM to stop offering any undergraduate or postgraduate degree, and also to not use words like BBA and MBA in its advertisements as it was not authorised to issue such degrees.

Serum Institute of India says that news reports claiming availability of Coronavirus vaccine Covishield in 73 days is misleading

Serum Institute of India has issued a statement saying that news reports claiming that the country’s first coronavirus vaccine ‘Covishield’ – developed by the Oxford University- AstraZeneca will be commercialised in 73 days is misleading. The world’s largest vaccine manufacturer said that phase-3 trials for the vaccine are still underway, and they will officially confirm it’s availability.

According to reports, a senior official of Serum Institute of India was quoted as saying that the government has given the company a ‘special manufacturing priority license’ and fast-tracked the trial protocol processes to get the trials completed in 58 days. The company has entered into an exclusive agreement with AstraZeneca to sell the vaccine in India and 92 other countries.

“By this, the first dosing will take place today [Saturday] in the final phase [Phase III] and the second dosing will happen after 29 days. The final trial report will be out in another 15 days from the second dosing. By that time, we are planning to commercialise Covishield,” the official was quoted as saying.

The phase III trials of the vaccine began on August 22 in Pune and Mumbai in Maharashtra and Ahmedabad in Gujarat. In this phase, the vaccine will be administered to 1,600 people.

The phase III trials of the vaccine are being handled by the Serum Institute of India. Earlier, the third phase trials were expected to take at least 7-8 months.

Govt to planning immunise for free

The government of India is planning to immunise for free under the National Immunisation Programme (NIP) as is the case with all other vaccines under the programme. The central government will procure the vaccines directly from SII and has sought 68 crore doses from Serum Institute by June next year.

In addition to Serum Institute’s vaccine, trials are also going on for ICMR-Bharat Biotech’s ‘Covaxine‘ and Zydus Cadila’s ‘ZyCoV-D‘ for the country’s first coronavirus vaccine. The vaccine candidates being developed by Bharat Biotech, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and Zydus Cadila, are in human clinical trials in phase-I and II simultaneously.

Earlier, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan had expressed hope saying that India will get a coronavirus vaccine by the end of this year. “The world is working towards discovering a vaccine. 26 vaccine candidates around the world are in the clinical trials phase. Apart from this, there are 139 candidates that are being developed on different levels and in pre-clinical trials,” Union Health Minister had said.

The Minister had said that the vaccine candidates in India have made a little more progress than them. Three of them have reached the first, second and third phases respectively, the Health Minister said.

It may be noted that whichever vaccine is found effective in the world, there is a high possibility that a bulk of it will be manufactured in India. India is the vaccine capital of the world, which makes around 60-70% of the total vaccine manufactured globally. Serum Institute of India is the largest vaccine manufacturer, which has already started manufacturing and stockpiling the Oxford virus, which will be ready to be shipped if the trial is successful. The company plans to make 1 billion doses of the vaccine in one year.

The Uttar Pradesh police have taken cognisance of the Kanpur triple talaq case and have decided to do an impartial investigation in the case. The Kanpur police on Sunday said that they will record the statement of the victim, who had earlier had accused the police officer of advising her to follow Sharia law and accept the triple talaq given to her by the husband.

A triple-talaq victim Hina Parveen, hailing from Sujatganj, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, had filed an FIR against 8 people including husband Noorzade, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, for harassment and illegal divorce last year in November.

However, Sujatganj police station in-charge Mansoor Ahmed did not taken any action in the case, instead had forced the victim to follow Sharia law and accept the triple talaq given to her by the husband.

“It’s because of girls like you that people get to interfere with Muslim laws”, police officer Mansoor Ahmed allegedly reprimanded the victim asking her to obey her husband.

Following OpIndia’s report on the issue, the Kanpur police have taken the issue into cognizance and have decided to record victim’s statements.

Taking to Twitter, the Kanpur police on Saturday said that they have already arrested one accused and carrying out an investigation pertaining to the case.

Bloomsbury India Vs Freedom of expression: How ‘liberals’ dictated what could and should be consumed by readers

On Sunday, the idea of freedom of expression was subjected to an elementary test in the Indian publishing arena. As always ‘liberals’ showed how little they comprehended or cared about the most basic tenet of democracy.

It all started when Bloomsbury India became the recipient of a ferocious backlash from an online mob after a purported advertisement of the launch of its book ‘Delhi Riots 2020’. The leaders of the mob were some of the who’s who from the news media and literary world. They pride themselves for being the last among liberal voices of dissent against a ‘tyrannical’, ‘intolerant’ and ‘fascist’ Modi government that is supposed to be trampling ruthlessly upon our democratic values with every passing second.

The virtual book launch was to feature authors of the book Sonali Chitalkar and Monika Arora. Also on the guest list was the editor of OpIndia Nupur J Sharma, BJP Leader Kapil Mishra, and film director Vivek Agnihotri. The BJP’s National General Secretary Bhupendra Yadav was supposed to launch the book.

The first, disgraceful surrender had Bloomsbury India issuing a denial claiming that the authors did not inform them about the virtual event and that their logo was used without their knowledge. It is surprising that a major publishing house would not be aware of a promotional push for one of their major books. But let’s give them the benefit of doubt, perhaps they are not interested in selling books and earning profits, hence leave it to the authors to do the promotion all by themselves.

The subsequent day Bloomsbury India totally capitulated to the Twitter ‘liberal’ mob as they withdrew  publication of Delhi riots book out of ‘deep sense of responsibility towards society’. Interestingly it is publishing a book on occupiers of Shaheen Bagh. Based on the description it appears to be a sympathetic representation that calls it “a moving tale of the brave women of Shaheen Bagh-patient, persevering, and unbelievable peaceniks-who raised their voice for the deprived and the discriminated”

The self-appointed custodians of freedom of speech decided that the virtual event provided a forum for ‘bigots’ to propagate ‘hate’. While they were unable to prevent the event from occurring they did their best to discredit it and scare the publisher away.

Once again ‘liberals’ conflate the contents of what is being expressed with the actual right to express. For freedom of expression to work, it has to be absolute. This includes the right to opine, to criticise, to offend, to insult, to ridicule, to satirize, to express hateful and obscene ideas and to ridicule anything under the sun including the state,  religion, public figures, the formidable fourth estate and even the almighty (if he or she exists).

What is hateful to one may be compelling to another. What is prejudiced to one may be a fresh perspective to another. What is disgusting to one can be riveting to another. What is pornographic to one may be artful to another. What is crass to one may be hilarious to another. What is crude to one may be hard hitting and engaging to another. A bigot to one may be a maverick to another. A liberal to one can be a fascist to another. A ‘rabid right-winger’ to one is a voice of reason to another. A left-wing loony to one may be the sole voice of hope to another. We cannot allow personal taste to dictate who and what is permitted in any forum of ideas.

Most importantly it the healthy exchange and debate about diverse ideas, not echo chambers, that facilitates progress as we learn to understand and empathize with the opposing point of view. Also denying an individual his right to express is denying yourself the right to be exposed to it.

Freedom of expression emanates from freedom of thought and it is often these thoughts that have led to reforms in society. All the great books, works of art, inventions and discoveries would have probably been impossible if someone somewhere, had not dared to be different and more importantly dared to express this difference of opinion without fear.

It is this solitary contrarian voice that begins like a flickering flame but with the support it results in illuminating everybody. If we become a society that sticks to convention we cease to grow.

Back to Bloomsbury India, even if one accepts the premise that the book was hateful and misleading, the ‘liberal’ mob should have taken it upon themselves to either engaged in a debate with the members at the launch or to publish a book that systematically counters the contents of the book. In other words they should have won on the strength of the content of arguments.

It is almost certain that the ‘liberal’ mob has not read the book but decided purely on the basis of the attendees of the event, who they disagree with and whom they despise, that the book was not acceptable.

It appears that ‘liberal’ mob prefer the gentle chimes of an echo chamber instead of what they perceive to be the cacophony of opposing perspectives. They fail to realize that if they desire to win in the arena of ideas, the only way is to engage in discussion and debate with an opposing perspective.

In this particular case, they should have urged the organizers to invite them to the virtual event to engage in a debate. They could have organized another event to counter what was said at the launch.

The ‘liberal’ mob always claims to be standing against fascism, perhaps they fail to see the irony that it was fascists who suppressed opposing views and Nazis that burned books that they considered dissenting.

The good news is there not every liberal joined the mob. There were a few liberals who have condemned Bloomsbury India’s shameful capitulation.

The truth is the ‘liberal’ mob probably fear that the ideas expressed in the virtual meeting may be persuasive and made an appeal to people, hence instead of engaging they shut it down and feel happy about themselves.

Bloomsbury India ought to be ashamed of themselves, they should have stood by their authors. The fact that they agreed to publish the book means that they were aware of its contents. It would seem obvious that they did have the means to substantiate the veracity of its contents.

Clearly they feared larger repercussions from the online mob i.e. the risk of being ‘cancelled’ which can have major financial implications. But if we go down that route, we will soon reach a point where there will be total submission to a particular perspective. Perhaps that is what the ‘protectors of democracy’ want?

Bloomsbury India should have left it to the public to decide if the book was worthy. They should have invited the opposing perspectives to publish their book. They had an opportunity to be an exemplary proponent of democratic values. But alas the blew it.

To conclude, here a quote (perhaps cliché) that is often attributed to Voltaire but actually emanated from English author Evelyn Beatrice Hall, “I may disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

One would hope that every ‘liberal’ makes these very profound words, the fundamental axiom of their being.

Russian pranksters dupe Kamala Harris into slamming Donald Trump posing as Greta Thunberg

In an interesting 3-minute chat, Russian Pranksters posing as teenage climate ‘activist’ Greta Thunberg managed to convince California senator and Vice President candidate Kamala Harris to slam US President Donald Trump over his policies. The Sun reported that in the call, ‘Greta’ claims that she is having nightmares after meeting Trump at UN in September 2019. The audiotape has surfaced days after Biden announced Kamala as the Vice President candidate for the upcoming elections. The Sun said that this call happened allegedly in December last year.

Russian pranksters fool Kamala Harris

Two Russians, Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexey Stolyarov famously known as Vovan and Lexus are behind this prank. They have made similar prank calls to several high profile personnel in the past, including Bernie Sanders and Prince Harry.

The claim that got Harris excited

One prankster posed as Greta while the second posed as his father, Svante. ‘Greta’ informed Harris that she has a recording of President Trump, where he whispered in her ear, “you will never achieve the goal.” They offered Kamala the audiotape to while she happily replied “Thank you, that would be wonderful.”

As per the US law, it is illegal to record phone calls or conversation between two parties without the consent from both sides in 15 states. However, the pranksters claim that they recorded the call in New York where they can legally do so. That means if it had been the real tape, Kamala could have used it as a “Trump Card” against Donald Trump in the upcoming elections.

The conversation between ‘Greta’ and Kamala

The pranksters talked in detail about Kamala’s climate plan and her campaign. During the conversation, ‘Greta’ claimed that she had talked to several politicians, including Russian President Putin, but no one seemed interested.

She went ahead and called President Trump, a terrible man. Harris, without any hesitation, replied, “It is similar to previous times in history when some people could not imagine how things can be different and then leaders did imagine and could see and lead. You have been a great leader, do not be deterred.”

‘Greta’ even offered support from her team to Harris to help in developing a climate plan for the United States to which Harris enthusiastically agreed to.

Security experts raised eyebrows over the prank call

Security experts have urged to take this prank as a “wake up call.” They said that the team working for Kamala Harris failed to check and verify the credentials of the caller. The first female chief intelligence officer at the White House and CEO of Fortalice Solutions Theresa Payton called it a very dangerous game. She said that Kamala could have given sensitive information to the caller and put herself in danger. She added, “Extra care needs to be taken by the handlers to find out who is calling. A few simple questions and they could have turned it over to someone on the security team to do a quick check. A couple of quick checks would have taken a few minutes.”

Vovan and Lexus have a youtube channel vovan222prank with over 100,000 subscribers. They post high profile pranks and chats on the channel. This prank call is however not available on their channel.

Bihar: 45-year-old widow gang-raped in Patna, six arrested after video goes viral

A 45-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by seven men in Gaurichak area of Patna, Bihar. The police have booked seven and arrested six of the accused.

According to the reports, the accused not only gang-raped the women but also recorded it on the camera, which went viral on social media. The crime had occurred about a fortnight back in rural Patna.

The matter came to light after the video of the rape surfaced on social media this week. The Gaurichak police station of the state capital filed a case late Friday night. The police officials traced her to a village near Gaurichak police station area and brought her to the police station to record her statement.

Reportedly, the woman, who is a domestic help was on the way to her village when the horrific incident took place. The victim was boarding an auto-rickshaw when one of the accused offered her to drop her home on his motorbike.

Instead of dropping her, the man rode his motorbike into an isolated place where the others joined him. The accused took turns to rape her and also filmed the crime on mobile.

Later, they dropped the victim near her home and threatened to kill her family members if she spoke about the incident. In her statement to the police, she has said that the accused were drunk and even forced her to consume liquor.

Left historian William Dalrymple was behind the withdrawal of book on Delhi riots by Bloomsbury, informs writer Aatish Taseer

After publishing bouse Bloomsbury announced that it is withdrawing a book titled ‘Delhi Riots 2020: The Untold Story’ due to pressures from the Islamists and left-liberal lobby, writer Aatish Taseer has informed that left wing Scottish historian William Dalrymple was behind the effort to prevent the book from being published.

“I’m extremely grateful to @DalrympleWill for his efforts in putting a stop to this shameful bit of state propaganda. It could not have happened without him”, Atish Taseer tweeted just after the news came that the publishing house is withdrawing the book on the Delhi riots based on account based on investigation and interviews conducted by the authors.

Taseer also congratulated the publishing house for pulping the book, alleging that “it was a coercive attempt by the ruling party (and its thugs) to write history”. He added, “It deserves to be pulped”.

On 21st August, Bloomsbury author William Dalrymple had announced on Twitter that he is working to stop the publication of the book. Responding to a request by Congress troll Saket Gokhale to somehow stop the book, Dalrymple had replied, “I’m on it. As are several other Bloomsbury authors”.

Replying to another Twitter user with the same request, Dalrymple had replied, “Just seen this and onto it”. The leftist author had also tagged several other authors in his tweets, implying that he was requesting them to put pressure on the publishing house to pulp the book.

Now the tweet by Aatish Taseer confirms that it was the leftist author William Dalrymple who pressurised Bloomsbury to withdraw the book. The book ‘Delhi Riots 2020: The Untold Story’ is authored by Monika Arora, Sonali Chitalkar and Prerna Malhotra. The book, which is a factual account based on investigation and interviews conducted by the authors, was to be released in September. They withdrew the book even as the authors were attending a virtual event to launch the book.
