Sonia Gandhi seems to have started associating privatisation with scams due to Congress’ own legacy

Sonia Gandhi’s fearmongering by opposing corporatisation of railways production units by terming it as privatisation on the floor of the House seems to be stemming from their own legacy of scams during the UPA era.

Remember Coalgate and 2G spectrum scam and the then Union Minister Kapil Sibal’s infamous ‘zero loss theory’ on 2G spectrum allocation? The coal allocation scam cost the exchequer an approximate amount of Rs 1.08 lakh crore, while the 2G ‘zero loss’ spectrum scam was pegged at Rs 1.76 lakh crore. On 24 September 2014, the Supreme Court of India decided to cancel 214 out of 218 coal blocks allocated since 1993. The Supreme Court in 2012 declared the allotment of the spectrum “unconstitutional and arbitrary”.

Sonia Gandhi’s fears that only ‘few industrialists’ will benefit for the corporatisation appears to be based on the above two scams considering it was her own government which pushed for disinvestment and privatisation.

To refresh her memory, former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, who is currently being probed for his alleged involvement in bribery and money laundering during his 2004-05 budget speech had said, “Disinvestment and privatization are useful economic tools. We will selectively employ these tools, consistent with the declared policy. As a first step, I propose to establish a Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises (BRPSE). The Board will advise the Government on the measures to be taken to restructure PSEs, including cases where disinvestment or closure or sale is justified.”

Sonia Gandhi’s concerns that the corporatisation will lead to loss of employment didn’t come in the way during the UPA tenure it seems.

Also, although it is true that the railway ministry has proposed corporatisation of some railway units, it is absolutely misleading to say that it is done with the objective of privatisation.

In the 100-day plan prepared by the ministry after the formation of the new government, a proposal to set up a new government-owned public sector unit named Indian Railway Rolling Stock Company Ltd (IRRSCL) has been included. The ministry aims to hive off its locomotive and rolling stock production units and their associated workshops into this new entity.

The aim of this is to bring in increased efficiency in production in the units. The IRRSCL is proposed to drive the technology partnership and modernisation initiatives of the seven production units under the Ministry of Railways. Each production unit under a CEO will operate as an individual profit centre.

The ministry is planning to only corporatize its production units in a separate entity, and it does not mean privatisation. Therefore, Sonia Gandhi was presenting distorted facts in Parliament by saying that the government is planning to privatise the production units. Even after corporatisation, the production facilities will remain a government entity named IRRSCL, and they will not be handed over to some industrialist like she is alleging.

Video and Stats highlight from Sri Lanka v West Indies game

Sri Lanka won a match when it meant nothing for them in the World Cup. Had they won the previous game and then won this it would have been an opportunity for them to reach the semis. West Indies, as usual, performed below par to their calibre.

After winning the toss, West Indies decided to bowl first. The Lankan batters looked positive from the start, and the openers batted for 15 overs without losing a wicket. The pair added 93 runs for the first wicket before Karunaratne edged to the keeper. In the space of 9 runs,  Sri Lanka lost their second opener, Kusal Perera got run out for a well made 64 runs. Avishka Fernando, the third time in a row played a significant knock for his team, this time he scored his maiden ODI hundred. He made assure that Sri Lanka crossed the 300 runs mark for the first time in this World Cup. The lower order also provided full support to Fernando to reach a match-winning total of 338 in 50 overs.

Chasing 339, West Indies had a poor start as they lost two wickets for 22 runs. Gayle was not at his best, scored 35 runs but took 48 balls for it, very unusual innings for him. Nicholas Pooran, who scored his maiden ODI hundred, has got little help from the middle order until Allen smashed a quick fire 51 off just 32 balls. With 30 runs needed to win in 18 balls, Sri Lankan captain asked Angelo Matthews to bowl, who has not bowled a single ball in international cricket in past 7 months, produced the wicket off the very first ball. That ended the hope for West Indies. Malinga was again the pick of the bowlers for Lanka who took three wickets in the match.

STATS

  • Pooran and Fernando scored their maiden ODI Hundred.
  • Malinga, who took three wickets in the match, has now 54 wickets in World Cup and far behind only McGrath (71), Murali (68) and Akram (55).

Delhi’s Chandni Chowk temple vandalism has broken the hearts of BJP supporters

Social media is not everything, but it is definitely something. And if reactions on social media are anything to go by, I do not remember a time in recent history when BJP supporters were so hurt as they are now. And why not?

The act of temple vandalism in Chandni Chowk has broken the hearts of BJP supporters. The images of the vandalized temple and the broken idols have gone viral on social media and in the hearts of the people.

Again, why not?

Yesterday, I wrote about how attacks on temples in Delhi bring back the worst of our civilizational memories. It reminds us of one thousand years of constant subjugation and humiliation.

But our ancestors did not live in a democracy. They did not have a voice but we do. And this is not what BJP supporters voted for.

Not surprisingly, the “liberal” crowd did not particularly care about what happened in Chandni Chowk. See how the HuffingtonPost tries to play down the incident itself as some kind of conspiracy theory.

And the PTI reported that the idols were “defaced slightly.”

What a way to use journalism as some kind of performance art to blur out the seriousness of the situation. Liberals, however, would never hold back from using the strongest possible slurs, including references to Nazism and Communist North Korea, when referring to any incident, real or imagined, when it suits their narrative.

Of course, these things hurt, but only so much. BJP supporters have long learned to take such reactions from liberals in their stride, dismissing them with bitter humour. The otherwise outspoken CM of Delhi is silent on this, but so what? There is no joke bigger than him anyway.

The real hurt among BJP supporters over this incident goes much deeper and for very different reasons. Because this is not what they voted for when they gave 303 MPs in the Lok Sabha, a solid majority two times in succession.

When BJP supporters voted in overwhelming numbers, it was not for a party but for a cause. A cause that they felt was bigger than themselves. What happened in 2019 was quite spectacular: Hindus coming together and sinking their caste differences to achieve a grand reconciliation that would pave the way for a grand Hindu revival. A rebirth of the Indian consciousness, a reclaiming of the soul of India.

This Hindu revivalism was much reviled in liberal outlets, both in India and abroad. The peaceful Hindu was hit with every slur possible: Nazi, Taliban, ISIS everything. The peaceful Hindu brushed off these insults and waited patiently to have their say when the EVMs would be opened.

And then to see a repeat of our worst civilizational memories play out before our eyes in the heart of Delhi…

BJP supporters are broken, disappointed and distressed. Their voices are hoarse. Their energy is spent. They are uncertain of what lies ahead.

All they need is for the powers that be to look them in the eye and tell them that they are still with the cause.

Kerala: Hundreds of priests protest against the Syro-Malabar Church’s decision to reinstate sacked Cardinal Alencherry

Nearly 261 priests of the Syro-Malabar Church gathered on Tuesday to express their resentment against the reinstatement of Cardinal George Alencherry as head of the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese, who is accused of involvement in dubious land deals.

According to the reports, priests of the Syro-Malabar Church organised a protest meet in Ernakulam on Tuesday against the removal of the two Auxiliary Bishops Sebastian Adayanthrath and Jose Puthenveettil. The two priests were asked to move out of the Archbishop’s House after George Alencherry assumed office following his reinstatement on Thursday.

The priests have also protested against the return of controversial George Alencherry who is accused of causing a loss of 90 crores to the Syro-Malabar church following a controversial land dealing involving criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and misappropriation of money executed by the Cardinal in 2016.

As accusations began to mount on Cardinal Alencherry, he was stripped of all administrative powers as the head of the Ernakulam archdiocese by the Vatican. However, he continued to remain the Cardinal and head of the Church but did not have any role in the governance of the Archdiocese of Ernakulam.

However, a new communique by the Archdiocese Media Commission has said that the administrative responsibility of the archdiocese will now be handled by Cardinal Alencherry, leading to severe protest within the Syro-Malabar church.

The communique also said that Bishop Jacob Manathodath, whose term as Apostolic Administrator has ended, will continue to head the Palakkad diocese. Earlier, he was appointed as Apostolic Administrator in June after Cardinal Alencherry was removed from the post.

Reportedly, the priests have now decided to protest against the order and said that they would not cooperate with Cardinal Alencherry and his office. “How can we cooperate with those who failed to discharge their duties honestly?” they asked.

The priests have also passed a resolution taking strong exception to the decision of the Vatican to reinstate Cardinal Alencherry as the head of the archdiocese. They also questioned why the Cardinal had taken charge by entering the Archbishop’s House in the night

Cardinal George Alencherry, the head of Syro-Malabar Catholic Church had found himself in big trouble after the Kerala High Court directed the police to file a criminal complaint against him and three others, namely, two priests Joshy Puthuva, Sebastian Vadakkumpadan and Saju Varghese Kunnel, a real estate broker involved in the land deals, alleging their involvement in a dubious land dealing.

This case pertains to the Cardinal allegedly favouring a middleman who sold Church land worth 27 crores for a price of 13 crores. In spite of selling below its market value, the Church had received only 9.3 crores.

News agency PTI caught attributing false statement to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

NDTV on Tuesday published a report with a misleading headline attributing statements to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. NDTV had published a report based on Finance Minister’s Nirmala Sitharman’s speech in the Rajya Sabha which was made during the Question Hour on Tuesday.

The report was taken from the news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) feed, whereby the body and the headline of the article so sourced is not edited by the media house.

NDTV propagating fake news against NDA government

Interestingly, the twisted statement used in the headline to indulge in negative propaganda against the government does not feature anywhere in the report. In fact, in her speech, there was no such reference to demonetisation or its impact on the Indian economy.

PTI story picked up by various media outlets

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman took to Twitter to question NDTV and asked from where did they pick up those statements. She said since her reply in Rajya Sabha did not contain this statement, she asked NDTV to watch her answer and even read the copy itself.

This is not the first time PTI has indulged in spreading misleading news. In September last year, a man was arrested for threatening a citizen with a gun, PTI published the news as he was arrested for ‘abusing’ UP CM Yogi Adityanath. Prior to that, PTI had almost maliciously spread a completely false report about the Yogi government drastically slashing its education budget in Uttar Pradesh, while the truth was that it had actually seen an increase.

In 2017, PTI was slammed for circulating 2015 photograph of Chennai Airport as that of Ahmedabad airport during the incessant rains. Later PTI was caught peddling fake news yet again, when it claimed that the Government had now made Aadhaar mandatory for registration of death with effect from October 1, 2017. CBECRevenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia have on separate incidents claimed PTI of misquoting them, whereas MHA had also denied PTI report claiming Doval attended election meeting at the then Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s house.

PTI or Press Trust of India is a news agency and exchanges information with several other news agencies including 100 news agencies based outside India, such as Associated Press, Agence France-Presse (AFP) and The New York Times. Publication houses subscribe to the agencies like PTI, ANI, etc. for a fee, and use the feed stories where their own reporter could not be present. Usually, the agency stories are published as it is by the publication houses unedited, thereby keeping the responsibility of authenticity of the story on an agency such as PTI. The media houses above could have chosen to edit the headline to give a true reflection of the story, but they chose not to, thereby being complicit in pushing fake news.

‘Match-winning lady’, Businessman Anand Mahindra cheers for India, offers to sponsor tickets of the elderly ‘lucky lady’ for India matches

In India where cricket is almost like a religion, the World Cup brings out the most irrational self out of most of us. Some don’t move till their particular player is batting while some wear the same t-shirt they wore when the Indian team played the last crucial match and won.

Amongst all this, an elderly lady, Charulata Patel, has won everyone’s hearts in India v Bangladesh match yesterday. The 87-year-old lady was cheering for India and the men in blue later went to take her blessings for rest of the tournament in a heart-touching moment.

Business tycoon Anand Mahindra, who, as a tradition does not watch matches when India is playing (we all have our quirks), switched on the TV only to watch the lady cheer for India.

He later tweeted how the last over had all the drama he needed in the match and wished that the cheering lady is also present for semi-finals and finals. Referring to her as ‘match-winning lady’, he suggested she should be given a free ticket.

A Twitter user then asked him how about he himself sponsoring her tickets. To which, Mahindra readily agreed. He has promised to reimburse her ticket costs for the rest of the matches where India is playing.

We certainly hope to see her in the semi-finals.

Only criteria for appointment of judges in Collegium system are casteism and nepotism: Allahabad HC judge writes to PM Modi

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Justice Rang Nath Pandey of Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow Bench has made some shocking allegations regarding the Collegium system for appointment of judges, as reported by Bar and Bench. Referring to his personal experience of 34 years in the judiciary, Justice Pandey alleged that the only criteria for the appointment of judges in the Collegium system are casteism and nepotism.

Justice Pandey says that he was writing the letter with a heavy heart but being a judge he felt that it was his duty to highlight the anomalies in the High Courts and the Supreme Court.

In his letter dated July 1, Justice Pandey said that the Indian Constitution declares India to be a democratic country but unfortunately the judiciary (High Courts and the Supreme Court) suffers from casteism and nepotism. He alleged that merely being a member of the family of a judge ensures one’s appointment as the next judge.

He compared the process of appointment of judges under the Collegium system with the appointment procedures in the legislature, the executive and the lower judiciary. He said that a political worker is evaluated by people during elections on the  basis of his work and similarly, and an administrative officer is appointed after he clears certain exams and even in lower judiciary judges are appointed after they pass certain exams but there is no clear criterion for the appointment of judges in the High Courts and the Supreme Court. The only prevalent yardstick is that of nepotism and casteism.

Justice Pandey even raised questions over the competency of judges and said that in some cases judges lack the basic knowledge of the law. He alleged that appointments under the Collegium system are made on the basis of favouritism. Consequently, how the judicial functions would be performed after incompetent judges are appointed is in itself a question worth contemplating, he wrote.

Justice Pandey further revealed that the decision regarding the appointment of judges is made in tea parties behind closed doors by the seniormost judges on the basis of favouritism. He alleged the utmost secrecy is maintained about the names of the judges to be appointed and the criteria of appointment. This secrecy around the procedure of appointment falsifies the principle of transparency. He alleged that the National Judicial Appointment Commission (NJAC) introduced by the last Modi government was struck down by the Supreme Court by declaring it as unconstitutional because the judges saw the Commission as an obstacle in the appointment of their family members as judges.

Remembering his humble beginnings and his hard work and determination, Justice Pandey concluded his letter by urging the Prime Minister to take strict and fair action to restore the dignity of the judiciary so that even a person with ordinary background could be appointed to the highest office of Chief Justice of India.

Immediately after coming to power for the first time, the Modi government had passed the 99th Amendment of the Constitution and National Judicial Appointments Commission bill in the parliament in August 2014, to set up the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC). This was a proposed body which would have been responsible for the appointment and transfer of judges to the higher judiciary in India. But in October 2015 the bill was struck down by the Supreme Court of India declaring it unconstitutional.

In the month of May this year during the launch of his book, Justice Kurian Joseph had expressed regret for striking down the NJAC declaring it as violative of the Constitution.

Supreme Court seeks response of the Centre and the EC on a petition seeking ban on announcement cash transfer schemes before elections

The Supreme Court today issued notices to the Central government and the Election Commission of India (ECI) seeking their response on a petition requesting a ban on the announcement of cash transfer schemes by governments before or during the elections. The bench comprising CJI Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Aniruddha Bose also issued notices to five state governments after hearing the petition.

The petitioner, Dr. Pentapati Pulla Rao who contested from Elluru Lok Sabha seat in Andhra Pradesh on Janasena party ticket, contended that such schemes provide an unfair advantage to the ruling party. Schemes like Central government’s PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme among others announced by governments of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal, etc. were referred to in the petition.

The petition also sought direction to the ECI to fix a minimum time before the election schedule, preferably six months, for political parties in power to implement such schemes. According to the petitioner, such cash transfer schemes announced ahead of polls circumvent the Model Code Conduct and fall under the definition of corrupt practices under the Representation of People Act, 1951.

The petition referred to Supreme Court decision in S Subramanium Balaji v State of Tamil Nadu wherein the court had directed the EC to frame guidelines to regulate freebies by governments close to elections to ensure a level playing field. It also referred to the ECI v Rajaji Mathew Thomas case wherein the Supreme Court observed that “no action should be taken by a party in power in close proximity to the date on which the elections are announced so as to derive any benefit therefrom during the elections or to disturb the level playing field for all political parties involved in the electoral process.”

We had reported earlier today that Election Commission said it will consider the state assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir later this year. The schedule for the same will be announced after the Amarnath Yatra is concluded.

Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt demands strict action against miscreants who attacked temple in Delhi, says India is a Hindu Rashtra

Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt today came out to voice his concern about the recent attack on a 100-year old temple in Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi. He tweeted in support demanding strict action against miscreants who desecrated the temple. He asserted that India is a Hindu Rashtra and attack on our religion is unacceptable. The incident is under investigation and police has filed FIRs in this case.

Yogeshwar Dutt said that if it was an attack on some dargah than the Tukde Tukde Gang and Award Wapasi would have come out from their hideouts, pointing out the hypocrisy of left-liberals who amplify routine crime against Muslims as communal violence by Hindus but brush aside real communal attack on Hindus.

Dutt, a freestyle wrestler, has won Olympic bronze medal during 2012 London Olympics. He was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, by the Government of India in 2013.

Earlier today, he tweeted, “For two days no one has said anything, look what a frightened Muslim is doing. Our country is a Hindu nation and we will not tolerate the attack on our religion. I appeal to the administration to hand over strict punishment to the guilty.”

An unruly mob of 300-400 people vandalized the Durga Mata Mandir in Lal Kuan in Chandni Chowk area on the night of June 30, 2019. Locals of the area posted videos of the temple on social media, which was attacked by people belonging to the Muslim community around midnight. During the same night, the mob also targetted houses belonging to Hindus of the neighbourhood.

Dr Harshvardhan, Union Minister and Chandni Chowk MP visited the site where Durga temple was desecrated and took stock of the situation. He also directed the Delhi police to take stern actions against the miscreants involved in the desecration of the temple.

While the social media is abuzz with information about the case, Congress leader and Delhi municipal councillor Yasmin Kidwai chose to conveniently ignore it and brush it under the carpet by suggesting “there was no attack on the temple.”
