Election Commission cuts short election campaign in West Bengal due to violence, cites threats by TMC leaders

Following the widespread violence observed during the elections in West Bengal, the Election Commission has taken the unprecedented step of cutting short election campaigning for the seventh phase of Lok Sabha election in West Bengal.

Polls are scheduled to take place in nine Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal in the seventh and last phase on 19th May, and campaigning in those constituencies was to end on 17th May as per rules. But keeping in view of large scale violence in the state, the poll panel has decided that no campaigning will be allowed in the nine seats after 10 PM on 16th May, thereby cutting short the campaign by 24 hours.

Addressing a press conference, the delegation said that this is probably the first time that ECI has invoked Article 324 in this manner but it may not be the last in cases of repetition of lawlessness and violence which vitiate the conduct of polls in a peaceful manner. Referring to violence during the roadshow of BJP president Amit Shah yesterday, the Commission said that it is deeply anguished at the vandalism done to the statue of Vidyasagar, and it is hoped that the vandals are traced by the state administration.

In a press released by the poll panel, it said that the Deputy Election Commissioner in charge of West Bengal visited the state on 13th May and took stock of the preparedness of polls in all nine constituencies that go to poll on 19th May. During the review, it was found that, “there is distinct resistance and non-cooperation from the district administration and district police when it comes to providing level playing field to all candidates for campaigning and in providing a fearless threat free environment to the voters. The Observers pointed out that while on the surface everything looks fine, but in their frank interactions with the public the fear psychosis that is widely prevalent comes out. They pointed out that utterances of the AITC senior leaders on the lines of ‘Central Forces will leave after the elections while we will remain’ sends a chilling message among the officers as well as voters alike.”

The press release said, “during last 24 hours representatives of various political parties have met the Commission and expressed their concerns on the prevailing conditions of law & order, and campaign related violent incidents are creating an atmosphere of fear and hatred in the polling areas which is affecting the overall electoral environment”.

It said that the “Commission is concerned about the safety and security of the general electors who have a right to access to the campaigns of all the political parties/ candidates in free, fearless and conducive environment”.

Considering the situation in West Bengal and based on the power vested on the commission under article 324 of the constitution and other laws, rules and court judgements, the Election Commission decided to end the campaigning in West Bengal 24 hours ahead of schedule.

Along with this, the EC has also transferred two top officials of the West Bengal government for interfering in elections in the state.

Shri Rajeev Kumar, JPS, ADO, CID, is relieved from his duties and transferred to Ministry of Home Affairs, and he is asked to join his duties in Delhi on 16th May. Shri Atri Bhattacharya, Principal Secretary, Home & Hill Affairs has also been relived from his post for having interfered in the process of conducting the election by directing CEO, West Bengal vide his D.O. Jetter No.629/HS/PA/ 19, dated 13.05.2019, the EC statement said.

The full order of ECI truncating the election campaign in West Bengal is given below:

Aiyar and Pitroda talking nonsense so that Congress can blame them for defeat in election instead of Rahul Gandhi, suggests PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the recent controversial comments by Congress leaders like Sam Pitroda and Mani Shankar Aiyar are not random incidents, but they are carefully planned by the party. The PM said that Congress party is preparing grounds to blame others after it loses the Lok Sabha election, so that the ‘naamdar’ (Rahul Gandhi) can be shielded.

Addressing a rally in Deoghar in Jharkhand, PM Modi said that Congress party has started preparing excuses for the loss it is going to face in the ongoing Lok Sabha election. He said that Congress sensed that it will be defeated the in elections after six phases of the election were over, that’s why Sam Pitroda and Mani Shankar Aiyar have made several controversial comments after the sixth phase, so that their statements can be blamed for the impending defeat.

PM said, ‘Congress is preparing to blame someone after the loss in the election. Exercises are going on in the party to decide what to do to protect the naamdar. Now Congress can’t say that they lost the election due to naamdar, that will against their principle. That’s why you must have seen, after the fifth phase of the elections, two of the closest darbaris of the naamdar family started batting from their side. Else they can’t dare to enter the ground to play the match without taking permission from the captain’.

Referring to Sam Pitroda and Mani Shankar Aiyar without naming them, Modi said, ‘one darbari is the guru of the naamdar, who was fielded on the ground first. He said 1984 riots hua to hua, insulting the feelings of the Sikhs. Despite knowing that this will bring back the old injuries of the Sikhs, the naamdar got his own guru to make this comment. The second batsman was out of the ground after he got out by hit wicket during Gujarat elections. He was hiding behind the curtain after abusing me. He also reached the ground for the last two days, and started abusing me in full flow’.

PM Modi added, ‘Congress is holding serious meetings and discussions to decide how to protect naamdar. Congress does not want to put the blame of defeat on the naamdar. That’s why now there is a procession of people in Congress who want to become a martyr by cutting nails’.

Chairman of Indian Overseas Congress and Rahul Gandhi’s mentor Sam Pitroda had caused huge controversy after he had brushed away the 1984 anti-Sikh riots when he said ’84 mein hua to hua’ (84 happened, so what), responding a question about the massacre. Later he had tried to clarify by saying that he wanted to say ‘jo hua vo bura hua’, but ended up saying ‘hua to hua’ as his Hindi is poor. He had also asked people to move on from the issue of 1984 riots, showing his insensitivity on the issue.

Many people had wondered why Mani Shankar Aiyar was missing from the action during the ongoing elections, but he made a grand entry to the scene by making multiple controversial statements in the last few days. First he justified his ‘neech aadmi’ comment on Narendra Modi in an article published on a portal, then he abused a journalist for asking about the same. He also blamed media for picking only one line from his entire article to criticise him.

Watch: Man who said ‘Aayega To Modi Hi’ to Swara Bhaskar says sorry to her, but with a path-breaking twist

A few days ago, a man, who was later identified as Punjabi singer V Ranjha, had walked up to actress turned political campaigner for Communists at the Delhi airport and said ‘Aayega To Modi Hi’. The video had gone viral, much to the chagrin of Swara Bhaskar.

The viral video became a rage among netizens with several memes of the video cropping up. While Modi supporters were extremely supportive of the video and couldn’t get enough if it, Swara Bhaskar lashed out and said that when a guy asked her for a selfie at the airport, she obliged “because she doesn’t discriminate people who want selfies based on their politics”. She said he “sneakily shot a video”. In her iniminable spiteful and hateful style, she said underhand and tacky tactics are the trademarks of ‘bhakts’.

Now, V Ranjha had released a new video message apologising to Swara if she felt bad. But his message comes with a path-breaking twist.

In the video, Ranjha says that he had asked Swara Bhaskar for snapchat and that she had willingly agreed. However, if she felt bad, she should have got him to delete the video right then and there.

After that, Ranjha says that as an Indian, he apologises to Swara Bhaskar if she felt offended at what he did.

However, V Ranjha’s apology came with a twist.

After apologising to Swara, he repeats his ‘Aayega To Modi Hi’ slogan, something which is bound to anger Swara.

Earlier, when OpIndia had reached out to Ranjha after Swara Bhaskar had called him names and said that he was a fan of Swara Bhaskar as an actress, though as a politician, he would like to see Prime Minister Modi return to power since there is truly no other leader of his calibre in the country right now.

When asked why he took exception to Swara Bhaskar’s political views, he said that he, or anybody for that matter, did not have an issue with her politics but her stand on issues when it comes to the Indian army and Pakistan. He said he took exception to her tweet about Major Leetul Gogoi who had tied a stone pelter to his jeep to ensure the safe passage of poll officials who were stuck amidst a stone pelting mob.

Swara Bhaskar accuses BJP of dividing on the basis of identity, but shields AAP by saying ‘can’t escape identity politics’

Actor Swara Bhaskar, known as a staunch proponent of JNU miscreants, was found campaigning for some AAP candidates who she believes do issue-based politics and not politics of hysteria. Swara was seen extensively canvassing for AAP candidates Raghav Chadha, Atishi Marlena, and Dilip Pandey last week.

She had also publicly extended her support for CPI(M)’s Kanhaiya Kumar and Amra Ram. She also campaigned for Congress candidate from Bhopal, Digvijaya Singh.

In a recent interview to Daily O, Swara had lashed out at the BJP accusing the party of furthering identity-based politics with their Hindutva agenda. She had asserted that in the last few years, instances of mob violence had increased and vigilantes had proliferated. She claimed by zeroing down on Sadhvi Pragya their candidate from Bhopal, BJP was playing divisive politics.

To Swara’s chagrin, the interviewer pointed out to her that AAP candidate from East Delhi Lok Sabha seat Atishi Marlena was also playing divisive politics. She was reminded about Delhi’s deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia referring to Marlena as a ‘Rajputani’ warning both BJP and Congress to beware of her. On expected lines, she took up the cudgel for AAP and said that divisive identity politics was the “unfortunate truth” of Indian politics.

Defending AAP’s divisive politics, she pointed out that country is so vast and diverse that caste and religion inevitably take the centre-stage. In an apparent bid to pass the baton to BJP, she blamed that saffron party had “framed” the discourse in such a way that no other party could escape it without appearing divisive.

It is also noteworthy to mention that the top mandarins of AAP-Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Atishi Marlena themselves were accused of shunning issue-based politics and embracing politics of “hysteria” when they levelled unsubstantiated allegations of purportedly distributing slanderous pamphlets against cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir. According to Bhaskar’s dictionary, slandering a reputed cricketer also qualifies as an issue-based politics, perhaps!

However, it is not the first when Bhaskar was caught off-guard. She was informed that Digvijaya Singh had been seeking the help of Sadhus in his campaigning and performing Yagnas to ensure his victory. She defended Congress’ soft-Hindutva approach by citing a distorted definition of Hindutva and asserted that BJP held a puritanical view of rabid Hindutva that it wants to be implemented in India.

Bhaskar had prominently led the placard campaign maligning Hinduism during the Kathua rape case. The Kathua rape and murder case had gained a national momentum with the placard gang and media jumping to a conclusion to malign Hindus when unfortunately an innocent girl was raped and murdered. The same gang had chosen to maintain absolute silence when in numerous other cases where the perpetrators were Muslims. The gang that jumped to a conclusion on the Kathua case also looked the other way when media reports from the ground had pointed it out that in all probability, the ‘accused’ in the Kathua case were framed. Looking at her track record, Bhaskar should be the last person to sermon others on her understanding of Hindutva or Hinduism for that matter.

In the same breath, it is pertinent to note that Sadhvi Pragya has been a victim of a vicious campaign ever since she filed her nominations from Bhopal Lok Sabha constituency for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Sadhvi Pragya was wrongly implicated by the Congress government to further their “Hindu-terror” theory. However, this concoction fell flat in the court of law. Sadhvi’s lawyer had categorically stated that when she should have been granted bail within 30 minutes, it took 8 long years of imprisonment before she was set free. Sadhvi had alleged brutal torture by the custodial officers on the directions of their Congress masters.

Digvijaya Singh, on the other hand, was one of the earliest advocates of Congress fabrication of “Hindu-Terror”. He also made an inherently misogynistic remark against his opponent Sadhvi Pragya that she is a ‘mute doll’ for RSS. Singh, who was seen scampering behind Sadhus during campaigning to solicit Hindu votes was the one who was in a hurry to link Hindus with the Mumbai 26/11 terror attack. Digvijaya Singh, another motormouth in Congress, had once passed an obscene remark ‘Sau Taka Tanch Maal‘ on one of his own party MP Meenakshi Natarajan.

Bhaskar, who thrives on the idea of feminism, however, seems to have no problem in supporting a candidate who has insulted women through his lewd remarks. Bhaskar who once felt being reduced to a vagina after watching Padmaavat had no qualms in campaigning for an aggressor and demonizing the victim by calling Sadhvi Pragya a ‘potential terrorist’. In fact, Swara also refuses to acknowledge Congress’ Soft-Hindutva approach by claiming it is better than BJP’s approach.

So when Swara’s attention was drawn towards the vices of the candidates she endorsed and supported, their short-comings were either swept under the rug as in Digvijaya Singh’s case or were termed as imperative to fight the BJP as in Atishi Marlena’s case.

The glaring incongruencies in the stance espoused by Bhaskar when the candidates she supports are accused of things she accuses BJP of, reveals that she has no regards for objectivity and she has differing levels of accountability for different political parties based on her prejudice.

After OpIndia fact-check, IndiaTimes changes headline where it had turned road rage into an anti-Muslim hate crime

In an unfortunate incident of road rage, one Dr Narul in Gurugram was beaten up by a mob when he went to buy milk for Iftar. However, IndiaTimes.com, a Times Group website, decided to twist its own report and give it a communal angle and declare the road rage as a hate crime.

Dr Narul had come to Ardee City at around 8 pm to buy milk. At that time, two men from a different car jumped out and started beating Narul up. When Dr Narul told them that they were coming from the wrong side of the road, the two men called up some other friends of theirs who then proceeded to beat the doctor up further. Later, according to Dr Narul, they left him after they found out he was Muslim as the attackers said beating him up might lead to communal riots.

This story was twisted mercilessly by IndiaTimes, which is a flagship product of the Times Group.

The journalist, Shweta Sengar, twisted Dr Narul’s statement. Her story carried a headline which read that the mob thrashed Dr Narul while shouting “Muslims should leave”, while in fact, they fled the scene when they realised the person they were beating up was a Muslim.

After OpIndia.com’s report on the shameless twisting of the incident by IndiaTimes and its journalist Shweta Sengar, IndiaTimes seems to have amended its headline and the story to give a more accurate representation of the incident.

IndiaTimes changed headline after OpIndia report

The IndiaTimes headline now reads, “Doctor Goes To Buy Milk For Iftar In Gurugram, Mob Thrashes And Leaves Him On Roadside Fearing Riots’.

Interestingly, the earlier version of the article that peddled the blatant lie about the assailants saying that “Muslims should leave” had listed journalist Shweta Senger as the author of the article.

IndiaTimes headline with communal angle

The latest version as reverted the article to ‘IndiaTimes’ basically turning it into a staff report and removing the journalist’s byline.

The journalist who originally wrote the twisted report, Shweta Sengar, though continued to brazen it out on Twitter. She responded saying that the screenshot being circulated (the previous one with the communal lie) was an “editorial slip”.

She goes on to say that if the screenshot is circulated further, it would result only in unwarranted hate.

One certainly wonders how giving a whole different angle to a story can be an editorial slip. For example, if I meant to critique the incompetence of Shweta Senger and instead, start talking about how bad her hairstyle is, would that qualify as an editorial slip?

As it turns out, Shweta Sengar is a habitually shameless journalist. Earlier, she had lied about Sadhvi Pragya in the same publication, IndiaTimes.

Shweta Sengar wrote an entire report about how the “Internet claimed” that Sadhvi was 4 years old when the Babri demolition happened and thus, her claim that she partook in the demolition is incorrect.

Now, OpIndia can’t possibly compete with the entire World Wide Web whispering in Shweta’s ears, however, it was soon revealed that Sadhvi was actually born in 1972 according to her bail application in 2016.

This fake news has still not been amended or deleted even as Shweta brazens it out and refuses to apologise about her latest blatant lie.

India Times, being the flagship publication of the Times Group surely needs to apply better editorial standards. One recalls how FirstPost had fired a journalist for inventing an interview to claim that there were women raped during the Jat agitations. In fact, in the profession where mainstream media almost encourages mediocrity, it was rather remarkable that FirstPost would proceed to fire the journalist, Tarique Anwar who concocted Murthal gang rape.

Interestingly, IndiaTimes had hired Tarique Ahmed right after he was fired from FirstPost for concocting an interview in an attempt to prove the Murthal rapes during Jat agitation.

Now, Tarique works for a portal where Abhisar Sharma too peddles his agenda with blatant lies and misrepresentation.

While IndiaTimes surely needs to apply better standards while hiring journalists as their hiring process has inflicted two bad journalists on the world, Tarique Ahmed and Shweta Sengar, it is also evident that mediocrity and bad journalism doesn’t really have a considerable effect on the lives and professions of bad journalists as long as they are willing to spin lies and concoct stories to suit a particular narrative.

Rajasthan: Muslims protest as two government hospitals play Gayatri Mantra in labour room

In the state of Rajasthan, Muslims are protesting against the Gayatri Mantra being played in the labour rooms of two government hospitals. Protesters have complained that they have been told that listening to the chant gives relief to women enduring labour pain. The mantra was being played in the Sirohi district hospital’s labour room for more than a year.

The Rajasthan health department had sent recordings of sounds which would hopefully reduce labour pain, but in Sawai Madhopur, the CHMO insisted that the Gayatri Mantra would be more effective.
According to Dr Tejram Meena, CMHO of Sawai Madhopur, if a woman listens to Gayatri Mantra she wouldn’t feel the pain of labour. He said that the chant was being played in the labour room of their district hospital, which would soon be expanded all the 20 labour rooms at other health centres in the district.
Dr Ashok Aditya, the reproduction and child health officer of Udaipur district said that they are working towards playing the Gayatri Mantri in the labour wards of government hospitals in Udaipur as well.
Special secretary (health) Dr Samit Sharma claimed that the government had only advised district officers to play soothing music and that no direction was given to play religious music.
“We are a secular country and such things cannot be recommended. We have not issued orders asking health department officials to play Gayatri Mantra in labour rooms. We have sent our own audio, which has healing and meditation sounds, to the officials concerned to play these in labour rooms. Maybe some officials are not using the audio that the state has sent. It will be verified,” he said.
A Muslim protester said that according to Islam the first sound that a newborn hears should be that of the Azaan and not the Gayatri Mantra.

Man interrupts Congress briefing, unfurls tricolour and says referring to Yogi Adityanath as ‘Ajay Bisht’ is an insult to Indian culture

In an unexpected turn of events, a man who appears to be an admirer of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath interrupted the press briefing by Congress. The briefing at All India Congress Committee (AICC) was disrupted with pro-Yogi Adityanath and Vande Mataram slogans.

The man entered the AICC when Congress spokespersons Pawan Khera was speaking to the media persons. Before anyone could make sense of it, he pulled out the tricolour and demanded that Yogi Adityanath not be called as Ajay Singh Bisht.

“Yogi Adityanath ko Ajay Singh Bisht kehna Bharatiya sanskriti ka apmaan hai, Vande Mataram, Bharat mata ki jai,” (To call Yogi Adityanath Ajay Singh Bisht is to insult Indian culture, Vande Mataram, Bharat Mata Ki Jai)” he said aloud before being escorted out of the room.

A visibly stunned Khera who was seated along with Randeep Surjewala was clueless for a few seconds. However, soon after he called the security to take the man away.

The man who created disturbance in the media briefing of Pawan Khera said, “Is this (AICC) a government office, why can’t I go in there? My first demand is that those whose parents or partners are foreigners should not be allowed to contest elections in India as it is a matter of national security.”

We had reported earlier how the left-liberals have been targetting and insulting Yogi Adityanath by referring to his birth name Ajay Singh Bisht.

In the sacred traditions of Hindu Dharma, it is mandated that once a person takes the vows of a Sanyasi, he ceases to be the individual he was until that moment. He takes a new name, shreds all ties with his family and dedicates the remainder of his life to the Gods above and Dharma.

it’s indeed a grave insult to the Mahant of Gorakhnath Muth and sacred Hindu traditions. For all practical purposes, Ajay Singh Bisht died when he took the sacred vows of a Sanyasi and was reborn as Yogi Adityanath. There is great significance associated with that ritual. When Ajay Singh Bisht chose to forsake his name, he surrendered his ties with his family, he surrendered his attachment with his parents, his siblings, his friends and every person he had ever loved and cherished until that point. He gave it all up for Dharma as every Sanyasi does. Therefore, associating him with the name he was given at birth is a grave insult to the numerous sacrifices Yogi Adityanath and other saints like him have made in the service of Dharma.

Twitter intellectual Sagarika finds Brahmin voters for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra even though she is not contesting elections

Sagarika Ghose, as we have already said, is a cautionary tale. She has gone on to admit that she is a Nehru fan-girl and now she is back rooting for his great-granddaughter, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

While she has earlier blamed former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s death for ‘dynasty politics’, today she went a step ahead to find ‘Brahmin’ voters for Priyanka Gandhi who is not even contesting the current elections.

As seen above, while visiting Assi Ghat in Varanasi, where Prime Minister Modi is contesting the elections for his second term in the Lok Sabha, Ghose, who identifies herself as a ‘liberal’ met a bunch of young people, she chose to identify as ‘Brahmins’. These young Brahmins are already voting for Priyanka Gandhi even though she is not contesting elections. The Brahmin youths, as identified as Ghose will vote for Priyanka despite not having received their salaries.

Curious minds want to know:

  1. If Priyanka Gandhi is not contesting the elections, how will they vote for Priyanka Gandhi?
  2. Since the only description about these youths is their caste identity and that they are not paid their salaries, are they paid salaries for being Brahmins? If so, what is the procedure to apply for a job there?

In Congress-ruled Madhya Pradesh, chaiwala’s and chowkidar’s sons top the 10th board exam

It is a moment of pride for the sons of a chowkidar (watchman) and chaiwallah (tea seller) as the two boys are amongst the toppers of the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE). MPBSE declared the results of class 10 today.

The total percentage of students who passed the exam this year remains 61.32% as compared to 51.39% in 2018. With 499 marks out of 500, Gagan Dixit and Ayushman Tamrkar secured 99.8% each and were declared the toppers. The second position has been secured by Dipendra Kumar Ahirwar who scored 497 marks out of 500. The third position has been shared by six students.

Dixit’s father is a farmer while Tamrkar’s father is a chowkidar. Tamrkar who hails from a humble background, unlike other students, did not have the luxury of time for his studies. Apart from helping her mother in household chores, he often had to do his father’s job whenever his father was on leave. Not just that, he also used to work at a grocery store to arrange his fees.

Rajkumar Soni is the son of a tea seller and is among the six students who shared the third position.

Girls remained ahead of boys in terms of passing percentage. Out of the total students who appeared for the examination this year, 63.69% of girls passed the exam in comparison to 59.15% of boys.

Priyanka Sharma puts up a spirited fight: ‘I will not apologise, if someone should be arrested, it should be Mamata Banerjee’

BJP youth wing leader Priyanka Sharma, who was arrested and taken into 14-day custody by the West Bengal Police after she posted a meme on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has refused to apologise for the meme. She said that if someone should be arrested, it should be Mamata Banerjee because of the language that she uses for the Prime Minister. Priyanka was released today from jail after the Supreme Court had granted her bail yesterday.

Addressing a press conference at BJP Office, she said that she did not do anything wrong therefore she would not apologise. Sharma was kept in custody for 18 hours by the West Bengal police despite the Supreme Court order to release her with immediate effect yesterday. She was released in the morning today but before that, she was forced to sign an apology declaring that she would not post such content in future. Initially, the Supreme Court had said that she could be granted bail if she apologises for posting the meme, but had later modified the order saying she should be released without any condition, but had ordered her to apologise after her release.

“My bail was granted yesterday but still I was not released for another 18 hours. They did not allow me to meet my Advocate and family. They made me sign an apology”, said Sharma. Sharma was released from jail today after a Bench of Justice Indira Banerjee and Sanjiv Khanna warned of issuing a contempt notice to the officials involved. A closure report was filed by the West Bengal government in the trial court yesterday itself, but the Supreme Court was not informed about that yesterday by the Counsel for West Bengal.

The court will hear the Sharma’s plea seeking action against the West Bengal police in the first week of July.
