Manmohan Singh lies again, this time about ‘surgical strikes’ conducted in UPA era

Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who led the government during the ten years of UPA, has lied. In his interview with Hindustan Times with former NDTV journalist Suneta Choudhury, who was excited when Modi was diagnosed with swine flu, Dr Manmohan Singh said that ‘multiple surgical strikes’ took place during his tenure as the prime minister.

Stating that the armed forces were given a free hand to operationally respond to threats, Dr Singh said, “Multiple surgical strikes took place during our tenure too. For us, military operations were meant for strategic deterrence and giving a befitting reply to anti-India forces than to be used for vote garnering exercises.”

However, the DGMO (Director-General of Military Operations) in a reply to an RTI filed said that there are no records or proofs of any surgical strike being carried out prior to September 29, 2016. The DGMO was responding to a specific question about surgical strikes being carried out between 2004 and 2014.

Earlier too, Congress has peddled the lie that UPA government had carried out surgical strikes too. Right after the Uri surgical strike, Congress’ Randeep Surjewala had said that such strikes were conducted in UPA tenure too. “We are proud that even in the past our forces have successfully conducted such surgical strikes on numerous occasions, he had said at a press briefing right after the surgical strike. Giving specifics, he had said, “Particularly on September 1, 2011, July 28, 2013, and January 14, 2014, giving a befitting reply to the enemy. In its maturity, wisdom and in the interest of national security, the Congress Government avoided making loud claims for the effective response and action of the Indian Army. Not just the Congress government, the previous governments too had conducted surgical strikes.”

The DGMO at the Integrated Headquarters of Defense Ministry(Army) clarified in a statement that, “This section does not maintain records of any other surgical strikes if any conducted earlier.”

In addition, the RTI application had also sought the definition of surgical strikes in the Indian Army. The DGMO said,  “As per the information available in ‘open source’ the definition of ‘surgical strike’ is ‘…an operation which is planned based on specific intelligence, on a legitimate military target for maximum effect and with minimum or no collateral damage. It involves deliberate insertion to the target area, precise execution and swift extrication of the body of troops back to the base’.”

Despite Army’s categorical denial, former Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh lied.

This is not the first time he has lied. During the run-up to the Gujarat Assembly elections, Dr Singh had lied that Prime Minister Modi who was then the Chief Minister of Gujarat never discussed the Narmada with him. And he lied about Narmada issue while campaigning in Gujarat not once, but twice.

It is rather unfortunate that the leader who chose to remain silent for ten years as a prime minister, lies when he finally decides to speak up.

SC asks EC to check if voting can start at 5 AM after petition saying Muslim voters during Ramzan would face difficulty due to the heat

The Supreme Court has asked the Election Commission whether polling can start from 5 AM during the Muslim fasting period of Ramzan. The SC has asked the EC to pass necessary order in a representation that sought the preponement of voting from 7 AM to 5 AM owing to Ramzan. The petition said that this should be done to ensure convenient and fair opportunity for everyone to cast their vote, especially, the Muslim community.

The petitioners were Mohammad Nizammudin Pasha and Asad Hayat.

The petition sought the Supreme Court to direct the Election Commission to increase the time of polling for 2 to 2 and a half hours so the voting could begin at 4:30 AM or 5:00 AM as the logistics would permit for the rest of the three phases of 2019 Lok Sabha election. The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by two lawyers.

The petition said that several Muslims who are fasting would be unable to go out and cast their vote since the heat would be too severe.

The petition said:

“During this month, a large percentage of the voting population, i.e. adult Muslims, both men and women, young and old alike will be fasting and will not be consuming food or water starting approximately 1.5 hours before dawn till dusk every day. In this intense heat, it will be very difficult for Muslim voters to queue up at the polling booths during the day in the intense heat to exercise their franchise. During Ramzaan, most practising Muslims stay up / wake up for an early morning meal called Sehri and sleep after the morning Fajr prayer. Thereafter, they avoid going out in the heat to the extent possible to avoid thirst, dehydration and the possibility of heatstroke”.

The petition also said that the Indian Meteorological Department, Government of India has issued a temperature warning and that it is expected to be hotter than usual in Madhya Pradesh, Eastern UP, Bihar, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. “In this intense heat, it will be very difficult for Muslim voters to queue up at the polling booths during the day to exercise their franchise.

The petition also said that advancement of the poll timing would allow Muslim to vote immediately after the morning prayers (Fajr) and return home before it gets too hot.

The petition also said that the representation has been made to the EC and EC hasn’t responded or acknowledged the representation. Hence, the SC is requested to direct the SC to extend timing to help Muslim voters.

Essentially, the petition requested the Supreme Court to direct EC to change polling rules because fasting Muslims would feel too hot while fasting during Ramzan. The petitioners also said that they have already made a representation to the Election Commission with this particular grievance. The Supreme Court has asked the Election Commission to pass necessary orders in this regard.

EU parliament threatens to cut subsidies and trade preferences to Pakistan, warns against persecution of religious minorities

In a collective letter addressed to Imran Khan on 30th April, 51 Members of the European Parliament addressed their concern over the persecution of religious minorities in Pakistan and warned him that failure to prevent such incidents would result in the suspension of subsidies and trade preferences to the country.

The letter reportedly read that Pakistan had deviated from the original intentions of Muhammed Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. Jinnah had reportedly wanted a country where the citizens would be treated equally regardless of their religion. But ever since the country adopted the Objectives Resolution in 1949, which declared the Constitution of Pakistan would be based on Islamic ideology, Muslims have always had the upper hand in the country.

As per reports, the letter to Imran Khan says that successive governments have ensured religious minorities would face political, economic and social discrimination as well as encouraging the growth of radical Islamic groups that would bring violence upon them. The reports of the letter come just after the United Nations listed Jaish chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist.

Paradoxically, Pakistan is the only state that has declared Ahmadi Muslims as non-Muslims community. As a result, even they have faced religious persecution in a land that systematically supports Muslims.

The letter also draws attention to the Asia Bibi case, where a Christian woman was faced with blasphemy charges. The EU has said that the continued misuse of the Blasphemy laws and apathy to change them would imply that Pakistan was encouraging such persecutions.

Citing a report by Movement for Solidarity and Peace in Pakistan, the letter also brings up the issue of forced conversions. Reportedly, on average, over 1000 girls from Christian and Hindu communities have been kidnapped and forced to marry a Muslim every year.

The last concern raised by the letter was the rise of religious extremists groups that have unleashed their violence upon the minorities and their places of worship, with the support of the state of Pakistan.

As reported by ANI, the EU reminds Pakistan that the continued religious oppression of minorities violates the UN treaty of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which is the foundation of Internation Convent on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). The EU warns Pakistan that unless an assurance is given that the country would effectively implement the Convention, all subsidies and trade preferences would be suspended.

The Members of Parliament have urged Pakistan to dismantle all constitutional and institutional structures that have resulted in the persecution of minorities if the country wishes to remain as a beneficiary of the European Union General Scheme of Preference Plus (GSP+). Abiding by the ICCPR is prerequisite for the GSP+ status.

It is also notable here that Pakistan has been put in the FATF grey list for its continued support to terrorist groups and failure to take strict measure against terrorist organisations based on its soil.

Love Jihad is not a figment of the ‘right wing’ imagination, it is a real and present danger

“Love Jihad”, also known as “Romeo Jihad” in some countries, is a strategy of luring vulnerable girls to convert to Islam by feigned love. Instead of genuine marital bliss, these girls get trapped in a web of deceit and frequently end up in the hands of Islamic extremist organizations. This phenomenon has been dismissed by the self-proclaimed “liberals” as a figment of the “right-wing” imagination. However, what is the truth? Does Love Jihad truly exist?

A review of some such cases in news points to a fixed pattern and modus operandi of the perpetrators.

  • National level shooter Tara Shadeo from Ranchi, Jharkhand complained that she married Ranjit Kohli as per Hindu rituals who turned out to be Raqibul Hasan Khan. After the wedding, he insisted on having a Nikaah and tortured her to accept Islam
  • National level Taekwondo player from Kanpur, UP complained that she was cheated by a man who introduced himself as “Raja”. He turned out to be Mohammed Waseem who had concealed his religion to lure her and then forced her for conversion and Nikaah. Her identity was withheld, she was a minor (only 14 years old) at the time of the incident
  • Girl from Bareilly, UP reported that she met “Golu” in a gym who was sporting a “Tilak” on the forehead and “Kalaawa” (Hindu sacred thread) on the wrist. He turned out to be Aamir who started forcing her to accept Islam and eat beef before marrying her
  • A girl from Shamli, UP reported that a man approached her on Facebook under a forged Hindu name, spiked her drink, made her obscene video and blackmailed her into marrying him. He later tried selling her to human traffickers
  • Subhologna Chakraborty from West Bengal was getting ready for court marriage with someone whose real name turned out to be Sheikh Sultan. When Family called off the wedding, he shot Subhologna dead and injured both her parents

In 2009, Kerala High Court confirmed the signs of “love jihad”; the court’s statement mentioned the following observations –

  • during the last four years, 3,000 to 4,000 religious conversions have taken place after love affairs
  • involving converting girls from other religions to Islam after enticing them to marry Muslim boys
  • police reports indicated a ‘concerted’ effort to convert girls of a particular religion to another with the ‘blessings of some outfits’
  • fundamentalist outfits like National Democratic Front (NDF) and Campus Front have roots in college campuses in various cities
  • there were indications of “forceful” religious conversions under the guise of “love”, the Kerala State High Court recommended the government to consider enacting a law to prohibit such “deceptive” acts

In 2016, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had also confirmed that there’s a pattern to convert Hindu girls and get them married to Muslim men.

In 2016, many women in Kerala approached Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan asking for help to track down their young daughters who had disappeared after marrying young Muslim men and then being converted to Islam.

Bindu, the mother of a girl in Kerala reported that her daughter was lured by a young Muslim man, got married and converted to Islam. After a few months, Bindu was told that her daughter was pregnant but the communication was irregular. One day, the daughter called her mother to tell her that she was in Sri Lanka. The next thing was a call from Afghanistan followed by a long silence. It was then that Bindu approached the Chief Minister.

Police suspected that this girl had gone over with her husband to Syria to join the Islamic State. A local TV channel tracked down at least five more families, with a similar story like that of Bindu, mostly from Malappuram.

In 2017, in the same Malappuram, media house India Today conducted a sting operation on Popular Front of India (PFI), a charitable organization (based in Malappuram) and frequently accused of conducting illegal religious conversions to Islam.

Zainaba, President of Women’s Wing of PFI mentioned in front of the camera that all such allegations were baseless, nobody could compel such conversions or convert people from one religion to another.

However, when she thought that camera was off, she admitted to proselytizing about 5,000 non-Muslim women into Islam. She also explained how conversion centres have to be disguised as charitable or educational establishments in order to prevent any backlash from RSS and explained their modus operandi in detail.

Screen Grab from India Today Sting Operation

Ahmed Shareef, the founding member of PFI talked about patriotic stuff including India’s freedom struggle in front of the camera. When he thought that the camera was off, he talked about how their goal was first to convert India into the Islamic State and then the entire world. He also talked about receiving funds from the Middle East for their mission.

Screen Grab from India Today Sting Operation

A detailed report on the above operation is accessible on the India Today website. The report also contains a 10 minutes video of a sting operation that shows the above conversations. Alternatively, one can also watch the full 50 minutes show on this sting operation on the website of India Today or on YouTube.

2018 report in The Pioneer mentioned about cases where “love” is used as a trap to lure girls into forced religious conversions or sexual abuse or both. India has more or less chosen to ignore the issue because of its sensitivity but other countries including the UK are also facing the same. This seems true as the British newspapers from way back in 2007 also reported about –

  • Police rescuing girls from forced conversions to Islam
  • recruiters from radical Islamic groups being paid about £5000 for each successful mission
  • recruiters “stepping up aggressive conversion tactics, especially around universities”
British Newspapers Evening Standard and Metro on Romeo Jihad

This is not to say that all inter-faith marriages are fake. However, it must be understood that the existence of radical Islamic elements who use deception and proselytizing as a means of expanding their religion is real.

Aberrations like rape or violence may be unwanted anomalies in any civil society but they happen and need to be addressed anyway. Similarly, love-jihad may be perpetrated by only a few individuals and organizations but it does happen.

It’s high time that governments and authorities started addressing it like any other real social issue instead of burying their heads in the sand, pretending that it doesn’t happen, engaging in political correctness driven by the fear of offending Muslims or summarily dismissing it as a fake narrative by Hindu Nationalists.

Congress leaders, including Digvijay Singh and Kamal Nath have a meltdown after UN ban on Masood Azhar

In what could be seen as a major diplomatic coup for India, the mastermind of the Pathankot terrorist attack and head of Jaish-e-Mohammed, Masood Azhar, has been designated as a global terrorist in the United Nations Sanctions List.

While this triumph is being celebrated by all level headed citizens of India, it has thrown the begrudging Congress party loyalists completely off balance. Senior party leader Digvijay Singh questioned, “How will listing Masood Azhar as a global terrorist help when the Pakistan Prime Minister is flaunting his friendship with Modiji.

It will be significant to mention here that it is, in fact, the Congress, who, due to their sheer love for the neighbouring country, has been echoing Pakistan’s rhetorics for all this while. Even after the Balakot airstrikes, the statements of Congress leaders, including its president Rahul Gandhi, had found endorsements, even official support from Pakistan.

In fact, Digvijay Singh’s comments against the Modi government, and in turn the mistrust by him in the Indian Armed forces by calling ‘Modi a liar’ and asking the government to provide proof of the Balakot strike, had provided enough substance to the Pakistani media to build fictional narratives to attack India with.

And moreover, Digvijay justifying the heinous act executed by Pakistan, calling the Pulwama attack an ‘accident’ too had given the nation a glimpse of Congress’ endearment towards the terrorist state.

Not only has the Congress at several instances exhibited more trust in the neighbouring country than its own, but it also has, in fact, on different occasions expressed its unfading love for terrorists. Congress President Rahul Gandhi had once showered immense respect and affection for the terror organisation Jaish-e-Mohammad’s chief, Masood Azhar by referring to him as Masood ‘jee’.

Earlier, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh had referred to Osama Bin Laden as ‘Osama jee’.

However, Digvijay Singh is just one amongst the spattering, spiteful, squad, who get unnerved by any success scored by Modi.

Another usual suspect, Congress’ Kamal Nath, who also could not tolerate another feather in the Modi government’s cap, expressed uncertainty on whether the designation of Jaish chief, Masood Azhar as a ‘global terrorist’ had anything to do with the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Apart from them, the so-called ‘Neutral’ journalists and assorted public celebrities who were until yesterday calling it Modi’s failure in getting Azhar listed are suddenly disparaging the Indian government’s achievement. The hypocrisy was noticed by many on Twitter.

India has been making relentless efforts towards designating Azhar as a global terrorist but China had thwarted every move thus far. Back in 2009, India had moved a proposal to ban Azhar. In 2016 again, India moved a similar proposal with the P3 (the United States, the United Kingdom, and France) in the UN’s 1267 Sanctions Committee to ban Masood Azhar, at the wake of the 2016 attack on India’s Pathankot by JeM terrorists.

The P3 nations had moved a similar proposal again in 2017. However, on all occasions, the proposal had been blocked by China, a veto-wielding member of the UNSC. However, due to the aggressive foreign policy, Modi has pursued against terror during his first term as Prime Minister, China has finally withdrawn its opposition.

Congress and their bandwagon are getting more and more frustrated as several are attributing this significant achievement to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’ adept foreign diplomacy and his governance. However, considering how India for decades, has tried to accomplish the same but has finally achieved success under Modi’s regime, it will be only just, to credit this significant development to him.

When PM Modi’s roadshow caused heart burn inside (and among) the ‘left-liberal’ ecosystem

Prime Minister Narendra Modi filed his nomination in Banaras for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections a few days ago. His nomination filing process received widespread coverage as the entire nation had its eyes on him. However, a day prior to this, he conducted a mega road show in the city of temples and was welcomed by a sea of people to thunderous applause, and chants of ‘Modi-Modi’ across the stretch of his route. The roadshow was covered across the media by almost every news channel. Roadshows or nomination rallies these days are seen as a show of strength for contesting candidates.

Liberals were seen shedding tears of joy when a similar crowd had turned up for Kanhaiya Kumar in Begusarai, to shower their love on the CPI candidate. The show of green colour during Rahul Gandhi’s roadshow in Wayanad was hailed as Gandhi’s and Congress’ presence amongst the people of the south.

However, the moment PM Modi held a roadshow in Banaras, everybody from their fraternity seems to lose their minds! What was so different in Banaras that the entire liberal cabal went bonkers in a jiffy? Oh well, in Banaras, a special person, who happens to be the current Prime Minister was waving to the cheering crowd from his car. In Banaras, the flags of the saffron-party, the BJP were seen fluttering gloriously. In Banaras, it appeared as if Hindu symbols had taken over. In Banaras, winds of hope and of reviving Hindu civilization, which was, until now falsified for political gains, were blowing.

These winds seemed to carry a subtle message of the saffron surge that had ignited the hearts of many people. These hearts were overcome with despair upon gauging the direction of these winds. PM Modi’s roadshow had hit the bullseyes by instigating this heartburn.

BJP is not to be underestimated anymore. Of late, the saffron party has been organizing a number of events to showcase its strength to the masses. This is causing frustration to the so-called intellectuals and ‘Pak Occupied Patrakaars‘ who have ganged up together. Events like these force them to shed their cloaks and expose their true colours.

Why do liberals, Kaampanthis and the samudaay vishesh of journalism get burns by Modi’s saffron? What is so negative about it? Nothing, except of course the fact that the colour of his crowd is not green. Unfortunately for them, the fire of their hatred in, which they seem to burn all the time also has a colour. That too ‘lagbhag’ saffron.

Hope you all remember the times, when politicians across party lines, would wear skull caps in the rat race to appear more Muslim than the Muslims themselves. Hamid Ansari and Najeeb Jung would chill out without their skull caps on, while Arvind Kejriwal would roam around donning the skull cap as if he had just arrived from Mecca. Mamata Banerjee too would raise her hands in dua and murmur as if she were reciting the verses from the Quran. However, the people Banerjee visited did not need her display of theatrics.

In reality, such politicians have nothing to do with Muslims, their religion or welfare. Such antics do not qualify as secularism either. Nor does it assure standing up for the minority rights. It was a mere formality, an obligation to please the Muslims. For ages, the Muslim community has believed political parties that talk about their interests and sport their religious symbols.

Had any such political party actually done something concrete for Muslims, then this community would not be suffering across social indicators today? Their women would not be tolerating insults under the garb of evil social practices that have been rejected in Islamic countries like Pakistan and Turkey. Alas! Muslims understand this very well but fall prey to such political gimmicks even today. Their Imams still command the authority to appeal to them to vote in large numbers to a particular politician, a specific political party et al, and they still oblige!

Anyway, let’s talk about Modi and the crowd that was seen in Benaras. Benaras and Patliputra are the two oldest surviving and continuously thriving ancient cities in the world today. Unlike some of the oldest known cities, the settlements here have not disappeared. These cities are inhabited since the beginning of civilization.

Modi contested from Benaras in 2014 and won with a thumping majority. He is contesting again. Since his victory, he has made efforts to rejuvenate the city, which is proof enough that he doesn’t aim to rejuvenate the city alone but Sanatan Asmita, history and culture as well. The Ganga, Kashi Vishwanath and the son of the soil Mahamana represent the continuity of its unrivalled history to its present. Modi’s efforts are a tribute to the vast glory of this ancient city.

Within 15-seconds of Modi’s roadshow, the left-liberal ecosystem must have realized that his governance has worked effectively, slowly but consistently, to break the spine of anti-Hindu narrative during his 5-year tenure. Like that of Andy Dufrence in Shawshank Redemption! So when their intolerance raga, raga Modi ghrina failawat, raga berozgari vyaapt, raga notebandi mritak, raga GST dukaanbandi etc failed to incite any rage, they were still thinking of creating a wave against the ruling regime. But this too fell flat as they figured out his government had already rescued the Sanatan Asmita from the shackles of Communist ideology hiding behind the poster of Raquel Welch.

When Modi waved his hand, stopped to accept a shawl offered by an elderly citizen, the entire route reverberated with chants of his name, it no longer was a plain roadshow. It transcended to become those drops of water that fell on Andy Dufrence’s head. The purity, and the calm, which was evident on his face after getting his freedom. The rose petals showered on Modi was a gesture of gratitude by his people for releasing the Sanatan faith from the clasp of these intellectual vultures.

Looking at the crowd in his roadshow, some drew unworthy parallels to that of Hitler and Nazis of Germany in lieu of their interpretation of Hilter, a popular leader running a majority government. This comparison exposed their sick and wicked mentality. If one becomes a Hitler by merely attracting crowds to his rally, then what about the similar crowds that are seen during rallies of Lalu Prasad Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, and Congress? In fact, the situation in Mamata’s Bengal and Lalu’s Bihar resembles close to a violent dictatorship regime.

Some were concerned about the politicization of the Hindu faith. Dear Champu! Policisation of faith happens when you throw a beef party, make an unsuccessful attempt to blend in by wearing a skull cap in an iftaar party despite being a Hindu and also when you have a problem with the head of the nation visiting a temple but not with Rahul Gandhi wearing janeu during his temple runs.

If such people and the ones whom they appease lack public support, then this is not Modi’s problem. You are free to borrow crowds if you can. Who has stopped you? The whole country witnessed green colour with moons and stars surging on the streets of Wayanad. But did we say the colour was representing a symbol of politicization of faith?

Faith is both personal, as well as collective. The Consitution bestows on us, the right to choose our religion and practice it with freedom. Modi’s act of doing Ganga Aarti is in his personal capacity as well as the collective faith of crores of Hindus who have chosen him to represent them. The ‘interest’ here implies the acts of previous governments to systematically falsify Hindu Gods and temples, distort history and texts and fabricate research papers to crop up the existence of a mosque in Ayodhya. We were all the while false fed about the existence of two races- Aryans and Dravidians, and the 5000-year old myth of Dalit atrocities.

A great but baseless conspiracy was hatched. It had no basis but they kept on repeating it as to run their propaganda. So much so that the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh went on to say that Muslims have the first right over the resources of this country. But why? How did he draw such a conclusion? What about secularism then or does ‘Muslim appeasement only’ mean being secular? Because of such antics, it irks this jamaat when Modi addresses the deprived, the poor, and the homeless. He cut across caste and religious lines by giving the economically derived a 10% reservation. This is how he has delivered social justice in true sense.

This saffron colour is not to scare anyone. Ayodhya’s Diwali is not for threatening anyone. Were Iftaar parties held to scare anyone? Absolutely not. The leaders who felt that they should attend those parties, so they did. Some leader felt that a certain religious population would vote for her if she offers prayers like them so she covered her head with her saree, closed her eyes and raised her hand in dua.

This is not to scare anyone. No Hitler has arrived. This is the land of Hindus, people here are all inclusive, they are promoters of tolerance and love. So much so that our ancestors offered shelter to Islamic invaders, Islamic rapists, and other foreign assassins. How many more examples do you want? Can such tolerant and peace-loving people scare anyone? Our community is gripped with a special kind of fear during our festivals, so how can we scare anyone?

We have even named our cities after notorious invaders like Bakhtiyar Khilji, who set ablaze our treasure, The Nalanda University. We allowed generations of these invaders to enslave us for centuries and settle here with us. Why should anyone fear us then?

During the PM’s roadshow, his followers were waving the flags, that’s all. Our flags have been here for ages. These flags were torn apart by invaders, yet continued their existence in harmony. By restoring the glorious name of Prayagraj, I see no threat!

Islamic terrorists, rapists, and invaders had discovered a novel way of wiping our culture. All they had to do is attack our faith, burn our literature and manipulate the history. Today, we are only reclaiming what belongs to us, in its original form, within the constitutional realm.

This saffron crowd that liberals are whining about had come to catch a glimpse of their beloved leader. Amongst this crowd, were few dead souls that have been revived by the Sanjeevani of Modi. The crowd in this roadshow hopes to reclaim the glory of our golden history through the power of voting.

There is no reason to be jealous of this crowd. Better still, make the efforts to earn the love of these people. The beauty of Sanatan Dharam allows even a sinner to attain mukti. Every Pak Occupied Patrakaars, member of samudaay vishesh of journalism, leaders of the left-liberal mob, politicians wearing Muslim skull caps for appeasement too have a chance to attain Moksha. Provided they visit the holy land of Benaras, deboard at the railway station, bow down at the ghats of Ganga, and apologize to her saying, “We will no longer behave like retards, we will not be chirkuts anymore.”

Ram Guha claims Modi govt has done a surgical strike on science and scholarship, data says otherwise

I consciously avoid following twitter feed of Nehruvian intellectuals. But I was amused to find an opinion piece by Ram Guha, titled “Surgical strike against science and scholarship” published in The Telegraph on my Twitter timeline. There are two components to the article making a case that the Modi government has carried out a successful surgical strike on scholarship in social studies as well as natural sciences. I would leave his bogus claims about the social studies to be rebutted by someone in that field.

However, his claims about Modi’s surgical strike on natural sciences has zero scientific basis. His main complaints about the Modi’s war on Science are solely based on his assumption that India before Nehru was just a land of snake charmers and naked sadhus and hence any mention of ancient Indian scientific achievements by any member of Modi’s cabinet (including Modi) is considered regressive. We can certainly keep debating about whether surgery existed in ancient India much before the west until cows come home and despite the preponderance of evidence people like Ram Guha would continue to live in their make-believe world and continue to deny every such work as Sanghi propaganda. However, the following four points are more than enough to burst the bubble that the Modi government has been on war with science:

Research and Development Expenditure: As shown in the charts below, total R&D expenditure has increased not only in actual numbers but also as a percentage of GDP (data taken from the latest Economic Survey). It can be seen that the total R&D expenditure has increased from 0.6% to 0.7% of the GDP. Needless to say that this level of R&D expenditure is extremely low compared to other similar economies and a case can certainly be made to double the investment in R&D in next five years if India wants to emerge as a leader in this field. But the point here is that the contention made by Ram Guha that the Modi government has conducted a surgical strike on science is on very slippery ground.

Source: Economic Survey

The number of research papers published: A simple PubMed search of NCBI (The National Center for Biotechnology Information) database for the papers (Largely restricted to fields in Biomedical and Natural Sciences) published from India shown a steady increase of scientific output from Indian institutions. As shown in the following figure, the average annual number of publications coming out of institutions has significantly increased during the NDA-2 era as compared to UPA-2 era. Yet another measure of scientific morale (that Ram Guha claims to have deteriorated during Modi government) is returning of scientists from abroad to carry out their scientific research in India.

In response to a question asked in Rajya Sabha by Shri Narayan Lal Panchariya, the Government replied that the number of returning scientists has jumped significantly (see figure below). I don’t know where Guha measured the falling morale of the scientific community; the data says a different story. Other than these data points, I was recently in India (Feb 2019) attending a conference and had opportunity to talk to hundreds of scientists, and most of them were upbeat about the current scientific environment.

IITs: Since Ram Guha talked about the virtue of IITs, I looked at the establishment of IITs as a criterion for the government to science and tech development. A cursory look at available data again leads to a diametrically opposite conclusion. As shown in the following figure, whereas UPA-2 established 3 new IITs, NDA-2 has managed to establish 7 new IITs. Not only IITs but Modi government is miles ahead in establishing new AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences). Compared to 7 new AIIMS established by UPA-2, NDA-2 has managed to establish 15 new AIIMS. If these figures are indicative of a surgical strike on science and Scholarship to Guha, I am glad they refuse the actual surgical strikes.

Number of IITs and AIIMS established

Budgetary support to Flagship Research Institutes: Since Ram Guha brought up National Center for Biological Sciences in his article, I quickly looked at the total expenditure of NCBS (Data extracted from the annual report of NCBS). As you can see in this infographic that the total expenditure at NCBS has again increased during the Modi Government compared to UPA-2. Guha has also brought up the case of IISc (Indian Institute of Sciences, Bengaluru) and there also the morale of scientists is probably on an all-time high as it has been consistently ranked number one in the country. My friends at IISc all seem to be doing great and none have complained about the anti-scientific temper of Modi government.

Total budget and expenditure at NCBS

So, in a nutshell, Guha’s contention that Modi has systematically undermined the institutions of higher learning seems to be disingenuous and does not pass the smell test. However, in the end, I must say that Guha’s piece is entitled an opinion and he is certainly entitled to his opinions howsoever ludicrous they might be.

Stolen idol of goddess Ugratara recovered from Assam village, thieves arrested

Almost six months after the idol of goddess Ugratara was stolen from the centuries-old Ugratara temple in Guwahati, the police in Golpara have been able to recover the stolen idol and arrest the thieves on Tuesday.

As per reports, a goldsmith in Assam’s Golaghat area was approached by a person to “sell a piece of gold”. However, the goldsmith, whose name has been withheld for security reasons, suspected the artifact to be a part of some ancient relic.

The goldsmith reportedly refused to buy the artifact and alerted the police about the suspicious person and the artifact. The Golaghat police then reportedly tracked and arrested the person.

Based on the goldsmith’s lead the police intensified the operation and arrested the gang and closed in on the location of the stolen artifact. Finally, the stolen idol of the goddess was found in a village in Nalbari district. Golaghat police have stated that a delegation from the Ugratara temple and the priest of the temple have confirmed the authenticity of the recovered idol.

The recovery of the stolen idol has been a major success of the police and the cause of joy among the devotees in Assam as the Ugratara temple is one of the most revered shrines in the state and one of the major ‘Shaktipeethas’ of India.

As per reports, four persons have been arrested in connection with the theft, namely, Saan Hussain, Adil Ali, Rahul Ali and Mintu Roy. The SP of Golaghat district, Pushparaj Singh has reportedly stated that the idol of the Goddess was recovered from Adil Ali’s house. He also informed that the idol will be first taken to Guwahati and will be handed over formally to the temple authorities by Guwahati police.

The temple authorities present at the press briefing by police stated that the idol has some parts missing. However, the idol is to be reinstated at the temple soon as per rituals and traditions.

The idol was stolen from the Ugratara temple on the night of 15 November. The thieves had also looted the donation box, the jewelry of the goddess, other valuables and desecrated the temple by defecating in it.

The shrine of goddess Ugratara dates back to 1044 AD. The current temple was built by Ahom king Shiva Singha in 1725. It is one of the oldest Shaktipeeths in the country. The idol of the goddess was made of Ashtadhatu (eight metals) and was extremely valuable.

When the crime was first reported, the police had arrested Honey Singh, Babu, Rohi Basfor and Raju Basfor, based on CCTV footage. 3 more men Tinku Ali, Hamirun Nesa and Farhan Ali. Tinku Ali had confessed of buying the idol for Rs 7000 but he had stated that the idol had gone missing and he could not tell where it was.

Later, devotees of the temple and the management had stated that they would reinstate the goddess and had decided to commission a new Ashtadhatu idol. The temple management has now reportedly informed that the old idol will be restored in its original place after repair and the new idol will also be installed in the temple. The idols are to be installed during the Ugratara Mahotsav. The DGP of Assam Kula Saikia has stated that the recovery of the stolen idol is very good news for the people of Assam.

Arvind Kejriwal ignores EC notice, repeats ‘accept money offered by other parties but vote for AAP’ remark

Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal gets himself in the centre of a controversy yet again as he urges voters to accept money from Congress and BJP but vote for the Aam Aadmi Party, during a series of road shows launched by his party ahead of May 12 polls.

This remark of his comes hours after he was served a notice by the Delhi CEO seeking his response over allegations made by the leader of the opposition, Vijender Gupta that pamphlets were being distributed by the party asking voters to take bribe from the Congress and the BJP but cast their votes in favour of AAP in the May 12 polls. The convener of AAP was also served a similar notice.

A senior official from the Delhi CEO’s office said, “We sent a notice to Arvind Kejriwal, convener of AAP, seeking his response on the matter. Kejriwal was asked to reply by Wednesday, 5 pm. But as the letter was dispatched late, we would wait for his reply till Thursday.”

Kejriwal, in his desperation, to win the ongoing elections, conveniently ignored the notice served to him hours before and shamelessly went on to repeat the same remark while addressing a cluster of slums in Wazirpur as a part of his road show in Chandni Chowk parliamentary constituency.

“Election se pehle doosri party paise baatne ayenge. Tab kya karoge? Paise sab se le lena par vote jhadoo ko de dena. “Election mein vote kisko diya hai kisiko pata nahi chalega, toh vote jhadoo ko dena.” (Before the elections, other parties would come and distribute money. What would you do then? Take all the money but cast your vote in favour of the broom (AAP’s election symbol). No one will come to know in whose favour you have cast your vote), Kejriwal said on Wednesday.

Kejriwal has earlier too faced the Election Commission’s resentment twice over this same remark, but somehow has failed to rectify himself.

In 2015 during the Delhi assembly elections, speaking at a rally at West Delhi’s Nawada area, Kejriwal had stirred a similar controversy when he asked voters in Delhi to take the money offered by the BJP and the Congress but “fool” them by voting for the AAP.

Similarly, during the Goa polls, in 2017, Kejriwal had unashamedly made the same remark saying, “If Congress or BJP candidates offer money, do not refuse it. Accept it as it is your own money and there is nothing wrong in getting it back. If they do not offer money, go to their offices and ask for it. But, when it comes to voting, press the button against the name of the AAP candidate.”

In December 2017, the returning officer had approached the Judicial Magistrate First Class in Mapusa with a plea that an offence under section 171 (B) (inducement to voters) and 171 E (bribery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) be registered against Kejriwal.

Moreover, a local court in Goa has issued a notice to him in 2018 regarding his bribery remarks during Goa assembly elections. However, Kejriwal remaining unaltered by all the brouhaha over his previous bribery remarks repeats the same gaffe this election season.

Child rights body writes to EC over video clip where Priyanka Gandhi giggled as children abused Modi

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has written to the Election Commission (EC) regarding the video where Congress General Secretary and Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s sister Priyanka Gandhi is seen giggling and laughing as children abused PM Modi.

In its letter, the NCPCR stated that they are in receipt of a complaint which has a video video where children are actively participating in an election campaign. “The children can be seen making derogatory remarks and using abusive languages in the presence of Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi,” stated the letter. The commission mentioned that as per a letter issued dated January 20, 2017, it had asked the EC to “ensure that children are not involved for election purposes and also, had recommended to all national parties to not to use children for distribution of posters/pamphlets, participate in slogan shouting, rallies etc.”

The NCPCR has forwarded the complaint to the EC for necessary action.

A few days back, a video surfaced on social media where Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who chickened out of battling PM Modi in Varanasi, was seen watching in amusement as little kids, coached by Congress workers, were abusing Prime Minister Modi.

The kids, who were seemingly coached by Congress functionaries chanted ‘chowkidar chor hai’ as Priyanka Gandhi watched on in amusement. Further in the video, one can see the children abuse further. The kinds in unison chant, ‘neem ka patta kadvah hai, Modi s**l* bha**wa hai”. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra smiles sheepishly and reluctantly, as a token gesture tells the children that this is a bad slogan and they should focus on the good slogans. After this, the kids go back to chanting ‘chowkidar chor hai’ and ‘Rahul Gandhi zindabad’.

It is rather shocking that while parents at home generally teach children basics of respect for the highest chair of the country, Congress has stopped to the level of using children for their own unsubstantiated lies and propaganda.
