Puducherry: Congress CM sits on a dharna demanding Governor Kiran Bedi recalled for trying to enforce ‘helmet rule’

0

In utter disregard for traffic norms and safety, Puducherry Chief Minister has sat on a protest outside the Raj Bhawan wearing black clothes urging the Central Government to recall Governor Kiran Bedi.

He is demanding that the helmet rule, where two-wheeler riders, as well as pillion riders, should wear helmets, be implemented in a phased manner. A few days back, Puducherry Governor Kiran Bedi, in an attempt to improve road safety, had taken it upon herself and got on the streets, urging citizens to wear the helmet and explaining to them the importance of wearing a helmet.

Congress lawmakers in Puducherry, however, seem unhappy with the attempt of improving road safety. Many Twitter users expressed their shock at Congress leaders’ utter lack of regard for the law of the land.

And of course, some Twitter users could not help but crack jokes at the dharna-politics.

Considering chief ministers of many states where the ruling parties are part of ‘United Opposition’ are protesting against something or the other, the Puducherry chief minister just felt a little left out.

Read why Twitter users are trending “Rahul Gandhi Pagal Hai”

An unusual trend picked up on Twitter on Wednesday after the CAG’s audit report on the Rafale deal was tabled in the Rajya Sabha. People on the social media platform started trending #RahulGandhiPagalHai soon after the conclusions of the CAG, exonerating the NDA government, went public.

The trend comprised of tweets mocking the Congress President.

It appears that the trend picked up on the WikiLeaks cable from 2014 which had claimed that Rahul Gandhi suffers from ‘personality problems’.

The Wikileaks cable in question states that ‘influential columnist and political insider’ Saeed Naqvi claims that it was increasingly common knowledge among Congress insiders that Rahul suffers from “personality problems” of an emotional or psychological nature that are severe enough to prevent him from functioning as PM.

Many people promoting the trend are citing the WikiLeaks report.

Another tweet from 2011 has gone viral as a consequence of the trend where Mayawati, Congress ally in Madhya Pradesh, had stated that Rahul Gandhi has lost ‘mental balance’.

Today is proving to be a bad day for the Congress party. First, the CAG report dismissed all their claims of malpractice in the Rafale deal and now, the WikiLeaks cable that raised doubts about the psychological stability of its party president has again gained relevance only weeks prior to the General Elections.

Former Bihar Congress President Ram Jatan Sinha joins JD(U), Manjhi adamant on seat sharing too

In a major setback to state unit of Indian National Congress, its former state president Ram Jatan Sinha has now joined Janta Dal (United). Sinha joined JD(U) at an auditorium, in presence of top leaders like national vice-president Prashant Kishore and state unit chief Vashishth Narayan Singh. He was later felicitated by party supremo and Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar.

Sinha had left the Congres party in 2015, ahead of state elections. He is a three-time MLA from Makhdumpur assembly segment in Jehanabad district. He is speculated to fight upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the same seat, considering his popularity within the district’s Bhumiar population. He had tried his luck in 2015 assembly elections, as an independent candidate, but had lost.

He was the president of Bihar Pradesh Congress committee in 2003.

At a party function in Bapu Sabhanagr auditorium, he had lauded CM Nitish Kumar’s performance in the state. He had said that CM Nitish has been successful in eradicating the social inequalities prevailing in the society, on the grounds of caste and religion. He also had taken a dig at, Fodder scam convict RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav’s son Tejasvi Yadav, without taking the name. He said that people without formal education, have no right to ask the question about the state of universities of Bihar.

CM Nitish Kumar also praised Sinha’s contributions from the early days of his life in the education sector. He also added that his party is not controlled by a family, and therefore it wholeheartedly accepts individuals from various walks of life. In February, last year BPCC president Ashok Choudhary along with three Members of legislative Council had defected to JD(U). Former state president Mehboob Ali Kaiser had also joined NDA-constituent Lok Jan Shakti Party.

Amid this, Mahagatbandhan constituent – Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awami Morcha is keeping the alliance on the toe. Manjhi has made it clear that his party should get the number of seats, not less than its partner Rashtriya Lok Samta Party(RLSP). RLSP recently had exited NDA, to fight along with the alliance.

“Under no circumstances would we agree to a number of seats that is less than what is given to Kushwaha. We are not demanding any specific number but our contention is we must not get less than RLSP. Rather, we should get more” Manji asserted. He had said a few months ago, that his party has the dominant role in almost 20 seats out of 40 Lok Sabha seats. Manjhi had also taken a dig both at NDA and UPA recently. He had called NDA a ‘Nagraj’ (king cobra), and UPA a ‘saanpraj’ (king of snakes), and had declared that his party will boycott Lok Sabha elections if alliance fails to satisfy him.

But, on the question, whether he is considering joining NDA back, he said, ” Why would I have left NDA if I were to go back? When I joined ‘Mahagathbandhan’ I had vowed that I will strengthen the hands of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad. I am going to meet him shortly.”

The high number of the exodus of its Congress’ veteran leaders to rival camp is surely going to deliver the blow to Congress party, which is expecting a comeback in the state with help of the Mahgatbandhan alliance stitched with Rashtriya Lok Dal. On the other hand, the alliance itself is facing strong dissent within itself, making it tougher to announce the seat-sharing formula.

AgustaWestland Scam: Congress era middleman Rajiv Saxena may turn approver in the VVIP chopper scam

Rajiv Saxena, a Congress era middleman, who was extradited from UAE for his alleged involvement in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam has given consent to the Enforcement Directorate to turn approver in the case, reports ANI.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is planning to make the middleman Saxena an approver in the VVIP chopper case and Saxena has reportedly given his consent for the same. The ED has now decided to seek approval from the court for making Saxena an approver in the case.

The accused Saxena is likely to file an application seeking to grant a pardon as an accused and consent for becoming an approver in the alleged AgustaWestland money laundering case, said the ANI report.

On Tuesday, the Court had reserved its order on the bail plea filed by Saxena. Saxena sought bail on medical grounds and told the court that he was suffering from a “heart disease” and “advanced-stage leukaemia”. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) did not oppose Saxena’s bail plea provided he did not leave Delhi.

The Delhi court had earlier granted the Enforcement Directorate (ED) 7 days custody to interrogate extradited middlemen, Rajiv Saxena and Deepak Talwar, another alleged middleman of the UPA era, accused in the VVIP chopper scam.

Rajiv Saxena is accused in a money laundering case connected with the AgustaWestland deal. He had filed an anticipatory bail plea in a Delhi court last month, which the ED had opposed. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had named him in a supplementary charge sheet filed in the VVIP Chopper scam in September 2017. Saxena and his wife Shivani Saxena are directors in two Dubai based companies, while he is a director in another Mauritius based company, and it is alleged that all those companies received proceeds of the kickbacks paid in the AgustaWestland deal.

Rakesh Saxena was extradited from UAE, along with another fugitive middleman Deepak Talwar in the same plane of the government of India on January 30, 2019, as both are accused in the VVIP chopper scam, has also been facing custodial interrogation by ED.

Bhima Koregaon violence: No relief for arrested ‘Urban Naxals’ as SC sets aside Bombay HC order refusing extra time to file chargesheet

0

The Supreme Court on Wednesday quashed the Bombay High Court order refusing to grant 90 days extension to Maharashtra Police for filing the charge sheet in the Bhima Koregaon violence case, giving no relief to five arrested ‘Urban Naxals’ named in the violence, reports ANI.

According to the reports, a Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and L Nageswara Rao setting aside the judgement said that the five alleged ‘Urban Naxals’-Surendra Gadling, Shoma Sen, Rona Wilson, Mahesh Raut and Sudhir Dhavale may now seek regular bail in the case as the Maharashtra Police has already filed the charge sheet.

The arrested accused had claimed that they were entitled to grant of default bail in the case as the Maharashtra Police did not file the charge sheet within the specified 90 days period and the extension granted by the trial court to the police was bad in law.

The appeal was filed against the order of the Bombay High Court, which had effectively set aside the Special Court’s order extending the detention of the accused of the purpose of completing the investigation into the Bhima Koregaon matter.

The five suspected ‘Urban Maoists’ were arrested by the Pune police on 6 June 2018, over charges of organising the Elgaar Parishad held at Pune’s Shaniwarwada on 31 December 2017, which is believed to have instigated the Bhima-Koregaon violence a day later.

The Pune police had filed a 5,000-page charge sheet, which had names of 10 persons, including Nagpur-based lawyer Surendra Gadling, Nagpur University professor Shoma Sen, Mahesh Raut, Rona Wilson and Sudhir Dhawale of Republican Panthers. Addition to these five, absconding underground Maoists Milind Teltumbde, Prakash alias Ritupam Goswami, Prashant Bose alias Kishan da, Manglu and Deepu have also been named in the charge sheet.

Apart from these ten alleged ‘Urban Naxals’, in a nation-wide crackdown, the police had arrested activist P Varavara Rao in Hyderabad, ‘human rights activist’ and ‘journalist’ Gautam Navlakha in Delhi, ‘activists Vernon Gonzalves and Arun Pereira in Mumbai, ‘civil rights’ lawyer Sudha Bhardwaj in Delhi, civil rights ‘activist’ Anand Teltumbde in Goa and ‘activist’ Stan Swamy in Ranchi in relation with Elgar Parishad violence and plot to kill the Prime Minister Modi.

Chhattisgarh: Congress divided over Naxal terrorism issue? This is not the first time

Recently, Kawasi Lakhma, the minister for excise and industry in Chhattisgarh cabinet, has written in a letter to CM Bhupesh Baghel that a recent incident in Bastar, where a woman was killed and another was injured after being caught in the ‘crossfire’ as claimed by the security forces during an encounter with Naxals, was a fake encounter.

Lakhma has claimed in his letter that the women were not caught in the crossfire as claimed by the CRPF and the district police, but the security forces fired on them deliberately, suspecting them of being Naxals. The incident had occurred on February 2. Sukki, an Adivasi woman was killed while another, named Kalmu was grievously injured.

Lakhma has reportedly written that the families should be compensated and incidents like this would make the Adivasis ‘lose their confidence’ in the government. He has also asked for action to be taken against the CRPF personnel involved in the shooting. The encounter had happened in the Gudelguda village in the Polampalli region.

There are some conflicting narratives at play here because, as per reports, the Sukma district administration has already stated that the women were not Naxals but villagers who were caught in the crossfire and got injured. Sukma SP Jitendra Shukla has also conveyed the same.

Soni Sori, a tribal leader in the area, who happens to be in the Aam Aadmi Patry, also claimed that the CRPF men tried to dress one of the women in a Naxal uniform even as she lay injured.

Lakhma has reportedly also written in his letter that no incriminating material or weapons were recovered from the women, which is natural because the security forces have stated that the women were not Naxals but villagers who were caught in the crossfire during an encounter. However, Lakhma, a cabinet minister and five-time MLA from the region going against his own state government to claim ‘fake encounter’ shows that something is amiss.

This is not the first time Lakhma had alleged a fake encounter. In August 2018, Congress, then in the opposition, had claimed that the Sukma encounter by CRPF, where 15 Naxals were allegedly killed, was a fake encounter too. Congress had even formed an 18-member team to look into the encounter where Lakhma was a member too. He had claimed that after Congress comes to power, it will examine the veracity of the encounter.

Interestingly, then too, Soni Sori, the AAP leader, had also called the encounter fake.

SSP Sukma had later released the video evidence of the encounter.

Congress had claimed during the August 2018 encounters that the BJP government in the state is against the tribals of the state and is creating ‘fake encounters’ to paint innocent villagers as Naxals.

However, it is interesting to note that even during UPA rule, Lakhma and some leaders of the Chhattisgarh Congress had claimed ‘fake encounters’ and have been actively involved in campaigning against the CRPF and security forces in the area.

in June 2012, 19 Naxals were gunned down by the security forces in the Dantewada. P Chidambaram was the Union home minister and he had mentioned to the media that three prominent Maoist leaders, Somulu, Nagesh and Mahesh were killed in that gun battle.

Soon, however, several ‘activists’, including Swami Agnivesh, PUCL President Prabhakar Sinha and CPIM alleged that the encounters were fake and the CRPF had killed innocent people in cold blood.

RK Singh, who was the then union home secretary, pointed it out that 6 CRPF personnel had received bullet wounds in what was being alleged as a ‘fake’ encounter but Chhattisgarh Congress leaders were not convinced. Congress party, even at the national level, took a safe stand and formed another ‘fact-finding committee’.

AICC CG in charge BK Hariprasad had even downplayed Chidambaram’s announcement and stated that he was merely quoting from the state government’s report. Congress soon took a very dubious stand on the issue and started commenting that it was the BJP-led state government who was ‘misleading’ the center on the issue. Chhattisgarh PCC had called the encounters ‘completely fake’.

Some Congress leaders even have had problems with Naxals being called ‘terrorists’.

Kawasi Lakhma was made the head of the 12 fact-finding finding team. Over the years, Lakhma has been involved in many such teams and his stand over anti-Naxals operation has remained the same, that the CRPF is targeting innocent Adivasis.

In 2013, almost the entire top brass of Chhattisgarh Congress was wiped out when over 250 Naxals ambushed a convoy of Congress leaders in the Jiram ghat area near Jagdalpur. 27 people were killed, mostly senior Congress leaders from the state. Interestingly, Kawasi Lakhma, the MLA from Konta, was the only one who has managed to survive. Lakhma was even suspected of involvement and was also questioned later, but was cleared in the NIA probe for lack of proof.

Over the last few years, the Chhattisgarh Congress had targeted the CRPF and the BJP government several times, claiming they have been organising fake encounters and even going to the extent of calling them anti-Adivasi. But the 2012 incident also proved that when comes to playing Naxal politics, Congress can even ignore its own statements and responsibilities and indulge in fanning the anti-CRPF narratives.

Now, a Congress government rules in Chhattisgarh. The NDA government was credited with achieving remarkable success in anti-Naxal operations over the years. But as the letter by Lakhma again threats to expose the Congress internal politics and disagreements over an issue as sensitive as Naxal terrorism, the question that arises it, whether the conviction and the strength of planning and execution that is the need for effective dealing of the left-wing terrorism issue, will be diluted and lost in blatant politics of the Congress.

In a recent operation, 10 Naxals were killed in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur. So far, thankfully, there have been no ‘fact-finding teams’ investigating over the veracity of the encounters.

Left-wing terrorism has been plaguing the interiors of our country for decades. Is it the same lack of political unity and conviction that has resulted in their continued existence? Will the Congress, which has shown no qualms to claim ‘Hindu terror’ and tried to paint the RSS as a dreadful organisation every chance it gets, continue to compromise and play politics over such a grave threat on our national security?

As per a report by the US state department, the CPI(Maoist) is the fourth deadliest terrorist group in the world, with 295 attacks in 2017 alone. It even ranks higher than the Boko Haram.

Jharkhand government bans radical Islamist outfit Popular Front of India for alleged links to ISIS

The Jharkhand government on Tuesday banned the Popular Front of India (PFI) under Section 16 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, for indulging in anti-national activities in the state and its alleged links with terror outfits like the ISIS, a notification issued by the state government read.

According to the government notification, the PFI is banned with immediate effect under the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 1908.

The state government has reimposed this ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI), months after the state’s High Court revoked the ban on the organization and berated the state government for not following due procedures and rules while banning them.

The Jharkhand government in its official order letter confirmed that this time around all the necessary procedures has been followed. It also mentioned the details concerning how the outfit was trying to disturb society and how their activities have become rampant. The PFI has links with other terrorist organizations and is trying to radicalize the people in the state through their ideology, which is inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS) and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), said the letter issued by the Jharkhand government.

The government citing four reasons and 13 cases to justify their decision. The state has even urged other states like Kerala and Karnataka, where the group is extremely active, to follow the suit.

As per the notification the PFI is active in states like Kerala, Telangana, Karnataka, Assam, West Bengal and Bihar.

Welcoming the move, BJP leader, Vinay Singh specified that the PFI which are specifically, largely active in four districts of Jharkhand, had been also involved in the PM’s assassination plot.

Last year, in February, Raghubar Das’ government had declared PFI as unlawful and banned the outfit. But a few months later, the Jharkhand HC revoked state government’s decision to ban the PFI. The court slammed the state government of not going ahead with the norms and revoked its February decision to ban the outfit.

The PFI which has been accused of supporting anti-national activities has been extremely rampant in states like Kerala and Karnataka. In December last year, two out of ten people from Kerala who had fled to join the ISIS were reportedly former members of the extremist Islamist organisation, Popular Front of India (PFI).

Moreover, in July 2018, the Kerala police had made a breakthrough in cracking the murder of the 20-year-old student leader, Abhimanyu, and arrested four top leaders of the controversial Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), which is the political front of Kerala-based ‘radical’ outfit Popular Front of India (PFI) in connection with the Abhimanyu murder case.

Earlier, the same PFI was also accused of murdering an RSS worker in Bangalore. Similarly, last year NIA had also filed a charge sheet against PFI members for the murder of a Hindu Munnani member.

The NIA had submitted a report on the PFI to the Home Ministry, claiming that the group has been involved in terror acts, including running terror camps and making bombs, and it was a fit case to be declared banned under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

Earlier, the former Vice President Hamid Ansari was also in the news for the wrong reasons after he attended a program organised by the violent Islamist organisation. The same outfit has also been accused of Hadiya’s ‘love-jihad’ cases in Kerala.

Interestingly, the Congress party has reportedly had an understanding with these radical Islamist parties in the past. During the Karnataka elections, the PFI and SDPI had withdrawn candidates to support Congress in the elections. Moreover, there were reports that soon after the Congress-JDs coalition government was formed in Karnataka, subsequently after taking the oath, the CM, Kumaraswamy had met with the leaders of the Popular Front of India (PFI) and Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI).

As Congress looks to delay Rafale deal, Air Force left to scrounge for 1980s planes in Russian junkyard

We have learned to believe that India is on the cusp of becoming a superpower. Seeing this kind of headline hurts.

Untitled.png
Indian Air Force looks at purchasing 1980s fighter planes

Our fighter strength is so depleted that we are reduced to looking for discarded Russian planes from the 1980s that might be lying around. Yes, the valiant Indian Air Force is literally sifting through somebody else’s junkyard. Looking for something … anything to sustain itself.

If this does not make our heads hang down in shame, what will?

Meanwhile, the Indian opposition, backed by large sections of media, are carrying out a propaganda offensive to delay the Rafale acquisition. To delay it somehow, beyond the May 2019 elections. Their obvious hope is that if they get a chance to win power, they can scrap the Rafale deal and start the long process of giving the multi-billion dollar deal to someone else. To do it all again, possibly in the way the Congress has always done defence deals beginning with the jeep scam under Nehru.

They will stop at nothing. Sometimes, government defence-related documents are published in newspapers with parts of the same page cropped out to show a different picture. Sometimes “exposes” are made where potential deals with Airbus are passed off as deals with Dassault (the manufacturer of Rafale, a completely different company). Anything to throw the kitchen sink at Modi, publishing every possible lie and half-truth no matter how ludicrous, hoping that something sticks.

And our valiant Air Force continues to bleed. Think about the Air Force pilots who will have to fly these 40-year junk planes that we are purchasing from the Russian garbage dump in our desperation. Think about their families, their parents, their wives and husbands and their kids who are reading this newspaper headline. Their near and dear one will be flying a 40-year-old junk plane. Can you imagine how they feel?

It is not like the fear of dying in a decades-old junk plane is something new for our Air Force. A Mig-21 crashed in Jaisalmer only yesterday during a completely routine exercise. Thankfully, the pilot ejected safely.

But others have not been so lucky. Look at this report from Rajasthan Patrika shared by Twitter user Rishi Bagree.

Untitled.png
97 fighter planes crashed in 12 years.

Almost 97 planes lost to crashes in the last 12 years! That’s eight crashes per year. Like in all modern democracies, our military does not take political positions and is fully subject to civilian control. The least that they can expect from us is that we don’t send our best men and women out there in creaky old planes assembled quite literally from the junkyard.

It’s not too much to ask, is it?

A few days ago, quoting the fictional figure of Rs 30,000 crore “given” to some businessman, Rahul Gandhi said that these 30,000 crores could have been given to families of pilots when they die in plane crashes!

Untitled.png
Rahul Gandhi’s shameful remark saying that the amount of ‘Rafale scam’ can go to pilots who die in a plane crash

Elections will come. Elections will go. But the dignity of human life and the dignity of our nation should remain supreme.

Now close your eyes for a moment and picture the Indian Air Force sifting through a pile of 40-year-old junk lying in some garbage dump in Russia. Clearing the cobwebs, trying not to step on the rats. Looking for pieces to assemble planes. Then, our very best men and women in uniform will say goodbye to their families,  their parents, their wives and husbands, their kids and go out to fly in those planes. Can you feel yourself shudder?

Congress leader P Chidambaram gives veiled threat to the journalist asking him uncomfortable questions

Congress seems to have a very unique relationship with the media. Back during Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency, many crawled when asked to bend. Today, when Congress is in the Opposition, fighting for survival, its leaders like P Chidambaram continue to remind the media houses like The Print that there is no reason, history could not repeat itself.

In an ‘exclusive’ interview to Shekhar Gupta’s The Print, former Union Minister P Chidambaram, who, along with his son Karti Chidambaram and his wife Nalini Chidambaram, are being investigated by various investigating agencies probing various corruption charges, gave a veiled threat to the various media houses giving relentless coverage to the corruption probe.

As seen in the above video, during the interview, The Print journalist Jyoti Malhotra begins to ask regarding the Aircel-Maxis case. “Mr Chidambaram, you, yourself and your son have been accused in…,” begins Malhotra before Chidambaram cuts her off and says, “This is completely irrelevant. Listen to me. This is completely irrelevant to the interview. You are breaching your faith, breaching your word and therefore I suggest you either wind up the interview or scrap the interview. If you think you will intimidate me by this then you are wrong.”

Malhotra, little taken aback by the sudden outburst of the senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, tried to explain how she was not trying to intimidate her. To that, Chidambaram said, “Of course you are, I do not allow the media to do a trial. Maybe in your rule book that the trial should be done by the media, please don a lawyer’s robe, please get appointed as a judge, come to Patiala court and we will argue.”

These 40 seconds have multiple layers to it. The Print did not run the interview live. Hence, this portion could have been edited out, but they chose to run it. Shekhar Gupta, the editor-in-chief of The Print also heads the Editors’ Guild of India, has not yet condemned a former minister trying to intimidate his employee who was just doing her job, unless she had overstepped her brief and asking uncomfortable questions to powerful people was not a part of her job. P Chidambaram himself had mentioned that Jo Malhotra had “breached her word”. One wonders if a “word” was given to Chidambaram that ‘uncomfortable’ questions would not be asked?

P Chidambaram chose a platform, The Print, which has not as aggressively covered Aircel-Maxis case as many other media houses have, to threaten the journalist.

ThePrint on Aircel deal

The CBI is probing alleged irregularities in grant of FIPB approval in Aircel-Maxis deal, while the ED is probing alleged money-laundering related to the deal. It is accused that Chidambaram misused his capacity as finance minister in the UPA government to illegally grant FIPB approvals to Malaysia based firm Maxis for buying Indian telecom company Aircel for ₹3,500 crore in 2006 and in exchange his son, Karti Chidambaram was given kickbacks. The CBI had obtained permission to prosecute Chidambaram in November 2018.

So, did P. Chidambaram use this platform to send out a message to those media houses who are covering the probe? As another senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Kapil Sibal quite recently said that governments can come and go. Today they are in Opposition, tomorrow they may be in power. And that Congress is keeping an eye on the bureaucrats who are showing their loyalty towards the Prime Minister.

Considering even Congress President Rahul Gandhi has sent out a message that once Congress comes to power, all RSS-members working in government offices will be purged, is there more to P. Chidambaram’s threat than what meets the eye?
