No Swara Bhaskar, we will not be silenced : Read the defamation notice and our response

0

On 20th September 2018, OpIndia.com received a frivolous defamation notice from Swara Bhaskar. The notice pertained to three articles that had been published by OpIndia.com in the due course of time.

The first article, headlined “Swara Bhaskar should be the last person to accuse anyone else of being a ‘rape apologist’”, was published on 18th April 2018. The article pertained to a Twitter spat between columnist Shefali Vaidya and Swara Bhaskar, where Swara Bhaskar herself had called Vaidya a “rape apologist”. It is interesting to note here, that according to Swara, what is good for the goose is certainly not good for the gander.

The second article headlined “Lack of comprehension skills or deliberate misquoting? Swara Bhaskar plays victim card”, was published on 31st January 2018. This article pertained to Twitter spat between Vivek Agnihotri and Swara Bhaskar where Swara, according to us, had gone on to misinterpret Agnihotri’s tweet and played victim. It is interesting to note that Swara herself has several times accused others of playing the victim. It is clear, that according to Swara, what is good for the goose is certainly not good for the gander.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor participated in event along with a man who called Maoists ‘patriots’

0

On Friday, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor tweeted that he addressed the National University of Advanced Legal Studies in Kochi on “Dissent and Democracy”.

Considering the topic Tharoor spoke on, we were curious to know more about the event and what he said. Therefore, we visited the Facebook page of the institution for a video of his speech after finding no such luck with YouTube. However, as Tharoor says in his speech, he could not stay for the entire duration of the event due to other commitments. With permission from other panellists, he said that he would leave after delivering his address and taking a couple of questions.

Scrolling through the page further, we saw a post about the entire event. The description states that Shashi Tharoor delivered a special address while Advocate P.A. Pouran, Advocate Mathews J. Nedumpara and Dr Athira IPS were part of a panel discussion.

Source: NSS NUALS Facebook page

The event was further confirmed by a The New Indian Express report. The Express report states that the event was organized by the Centre for Human Rights and the NSS of NUALS and was attended by Advocates P.A. Pouran and Mathews J. Nedumpara.

Advocate P.A. Pouran is mentioned as leading People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), one of the organizations linked to the CDRO through its fraternal organization People’s Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR), has intricate links to Maoists. PUCL’s website lists Adv. Pouran as one of the office bearers of the organization for the state of Kerala. We have reported extensively on the intricate links between the CDRO and the Maoists.

It is pertinent to mention that the arrested activist Sudha Bharadwaj is associated to the PUCL as well and Gautam Navlakha, another among those arrested who had links with a notorious ISI funded Kashmiri separatist, is associated with PUDR, fraternal organization of PUCL. Shoma Sen, one of the ‘activists’ arrested in June in connection with the violence at Bhima Koregaon is a member of the Committee for Protection of Democratic Rights (CPDR), another fraternal organization of PUCL.

In November 2016, Pouran had called the killing of two Maoists in an encounter in Nilambur village, Kerala as ‘stage-managed murder’ and called it a cold-blooded murder by the Police. He went ahead and called the Maoists ‘patriots’. “No mother gives birth to a Maoist,” he told The Hindu. Quoting from The Hindu report:

At a time when patriotism was being tom-tommed by right-wing forces, Mr. Pouran said the Maoists, who stood by the downtrodden and fought for the Adivasis’ right to life, were the real patriots. “No mother gives birth to a Maoist,” he told The Hindu. “It is the brutal, exploitative circumstances in the country that give birth to such patriots who are concerned for other human beings.”

OpIndia.com had also conducted an exclusive interview with surrendered Naxal Pahad Singh who had slammed “jobless intellectuals” who fan the Maoists. He had asserted that this “fight” is not for Adivasi rights but for the genocide of Adivasis. He had named one of the arrested ‘activists’ Arun Ferreira and asserted that he was a member of the Rajya committee of CPI (Maoists).

Given the circumstances and the crackdown on ‘Urban Naxals’ by the government and considering the fact that Advocate P.A. Pouran has called Maoists ‘patriots’ in the past, it is disconcerting that a senior leader of the Congress party was part of an event that included him.

Even though he was not present for the entire duration, it does not bode well for the country if a senior leader of the main opposition party is associated with an event that included a person who believes Maoists are patriots. It should also be noted that Pouran is an office-bearer of an organization that is associated with the CDRO which allegedly has intricate links to Maoists.

The Sabarimala verdict is anything but a gender equality win

The Sabarimala verdict opening the doors of the temple to women of all ages is not a victory in the fight of gender equality; it’s an attack on the Hindu faith. Seculars, self-professed anti-religion people, suddenly became Hinduism experts. We’re way past the time to mince words or be politically correct over existential issues.

With respect to Sabarimala, for generations men and women have followed the traditional norms laid down, undertaking strict penance and adhering to age restrictions to maintain the sanctity of Lord’s wishes. So women of faith would still follow the will of Ayyappa and won’t go-to Sabarimala till they are above the age of 50. Women who have no faith have no business going to the temple anyway, and in the end, if some of them go to assert this so-called win of equality, don’t be fooled – it’ll just be with the intention of desecration of Hindu faith. Temples or any place of worship are bound by the philosophy and rules of the presiding deity, they’re not tourist’s spots to land up for photo shoots and to “check it out” when one feels like. And in the end THAT is what they want to turn Hindu temples and faith into… museum relics and tourist destinations. A dead Hindu is a good Hindu?

Majority Hindu temples follow no gender restriction, barring a few exceptions like Sabarimala, Shani Shignapur etc. Even there it’s not a blanket ban but nuances based on the philosophy of that particular deity. Also is it is worth noting that some other Kerala temples like Attukal or Chakkulathukavu, men are not allowed whereas women are. So putting across of the Sabarimala petition as a gender discrimination issue by Naushad Ahmed Khan, President of the Indian Young Lawyers Association (one of the two main petitioners, who’s neither a woman nor a Hindu) is nothing but a Hinduphobic agenda. No wonder he does not petition against the law allowing Muslim men polygamy, as perhaps in his eyes that is not a case of discrimination against women.

Which Hindu women were they representing? The ones who were feeling discriminated upon sitting in their living rooms enjoying Sufi songs with ‘atheist’ in social media account bio? Or the real women who made the pilgrimage at the prescribed age/waiting for the right age to make the pilgrimage? How many such believers did they talk to? How many women who believe in Lord Ayyappa, give consent to go ahead and file a plea against their faith? Why don’t we know the names or data of those real devotees? Why is it just the left-liberal-elite-urban nexus that has been at the centre of this case?

Do you remember that character Trupti Desai, the so-called gender equality activist but more like the anti-Hindu activist? The same one who went and successfully desecrated the Shani Signapur shrine? For all her aggressive enthusiasm, I wonder how many times a year does she do the Shani temple pilgrimage currently. Similarly, how many of these suddenly ‘equalled’ women would go-to Sabrimala now? Some may, as I said, to spite the hand-tied Hindus of faith, but most of them don’t really care about the ‘Right to visit One particular temple’ because they don’t go to the other hundreds of welcoming temples either. Forget caring about right to temple entries, they don’t even care about gender equality and women’s rights.

They are mostly privileged elites who define feminism with a blanket definition. Either you fall in line else be branded anti-women. Which I think now would be the case for the sole women Judge in the 5 Judge bench hearing the Sabarimala case. Justice Indu Malhotra was the only one who dissented which resulted in a 4:1 verdict. She observed “Equality in matters of religion must be viewed in the context of the worshippers of the same faith. It is not for the court to determine which practices of faith are to be struck down except when they are evil, for example, sati”.

I could ask what the gender equality activists are doing about other religious places discriminating like Haji Ali? But I’d rather ask; despite on-the-ground social discriminations and limitations that women of the country still face (especially in certain communities) and that need real consistent representation, what motivates these so-called activists to go poking around in very specific Hindu rituals like that of Sabarimala? How am I not to look at this entire 2-3 years of a legal circus as plain single point anti-Hindu agenda? Whereas rapes in Churches and Madarsas only draw a blank from this lot. No one petitioned, rallied, wrote Op-eds from this gang on how a rapist Church priest could go scot-free for months despite the case being known openly. But one standalone Hindu temple’s right to admission clause is a huge threat to gender equality!

None of these activists even want to realise that Hinduism cannot be viewed from the Abrahamic lens. Hinduism has crores of Gods and Goddesses, each one with a specific ritual and tradition. They refuse to realise that in Hinduism, the deity itself has rights that cannot be infringed upon. As Justice Indu Malhotra observed, the courts should interfere in faith only if a tradition shakes the conscience of humanity, and this specific ritual doesn’t fall under that category.

These overnight activists fail to realise that the Sabarimala ritual is not because it discriminates against women but because it is the tradition and right of that specific deity. They fail to realise that the change in ritual or tradition of that one temple should depend on what the devotees of that temple and that deity believe, not because the ones who don’t believe in that deity at all want to impose some misplaced sense of activism on the devotees. Hinduism is not a coded, one book religion like the Abrahamic ones. When people who don’t even have faith, go after specific rituals or specific deities, they expose how their minds have been colonised by Abrahamic principles to such an extent, that the ‘tolerant’ and ‘liberal’ fail to accept diversity.

I’m a Hindu woman and believer who is #READYTOWAIT and with this verdict, I feel utterly cheated and defeated. Cheated and defeated by these false petitioners who didn’t represent me (and thousands like me) and yet cheated me out of my right to choose to wait. But mostly, I am angry. Very angry.

Massive security breach in Facebook, 90 million accounts affected

Facebook, the social networking giant, already under scrutiny over the issue of sharing private information of its users, on Friday said that an attack on its computer network has exposed the private information of nearly 50 million users. So effectively around 50 million accounts have been hacked and potentially another 40 million are at risk. So Facebook is saying that around 90 million people have been affected because of a security bug in a feature called ‘View As’.

“On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 25, our engineering team discovered a security issue affecting almost 50 million accounts. We’re taking this incredibly seriously,” Guy Rosen, Facebook VP of product management wrote on the company blog.

Data of around 50 million users have been exposed following a huge security breach by unknown hackers, said the Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. It has also been feared that a significant number of accounts affected could be from India.

“We face constant attacks from people who want to take over accounts or steal information around the world. While I’m glad we found this, fixed the vulnerability, and secured the accounts that may be at risk, the reality is we need to continue developing new tools to prevent this from happening in the first place,” Zuckerberg said.

Revealing that because the investigation into the matter is at an initial stage it is difficult to assess at this stage that whether any account has been misused and who is behind the cyber attacks, said the CEO.

As a security measure, Facebook has invalidated access tokens for the accounts, causing those users to be logged out. Facebook says that it is resetting the security tokens for 90 million affected users.

This means if you are affected you will see that you have been logged out of the Facebook app, or any other app in which you use Facebook ID. You will also be logged out of the Facebook web page if you have been affected.

Along with the 50 million affected users, Facebook has taken a precautionary step and reset access tokens for another 40 million accounts that have been subject to a “View As” look-up in the last year.

What this basically means is that if you have suddenly found yourself logged out of the Facebook account on phone, or desktop, or an app like Instagram or Snapchat, your account has been affected. It also means that you should now log back into the Facebook account and change your password immediately.

In March, after allegations that Cambridge Analytica has gained access to data of millions of users worldwide and might be using it to run their campaigns, Facebook had suspended the firm from accessing its data.

Uttarakhand High Court orders strict implementation of ban on porn sites

0

The Uttarakhand High Court has taken Suo Motu cognisance of a recent gang rape of a school student in Dehradun by her fellow students and ordered strict implementation of the ban on websites offering pornographic content. According to reports, the HC has asked the centre to cancel the licenses of websites that offer obscene content.

A division bench of the HC reportedly cited an earlier notification and asked the central government to issue strict orders to internet service license holders to ‘punctually’ obey the orders to block transmission of pornographic and obscene content.

Recently, a class-10 schoolgirl was gang-raped in a school in Dehradun by her seniors after they allegedly watched pornographic videos and called her to a storage room under some false pretext. The case had generated massive outrage after the school was accused of withholding information regarding the crime and violating several rules. CBSE has reportedly cancelled the school’s affiliation. Five school officials, apart from the four rape accused students have been arrested for attempting a cover-up and threatening the victim.

Taking cognisance of the case the Uttarakhand HC division bench comprising of acting chief justice Rajiv Sharma and justice Manoj Tiwari observed that unlimited access to pornographic websites should be blocked or curbed to avoid adverse influence over the impressionable minds of youngsters.

The bench has also instructed website service providers to block the transmission of pornographic content in any electronic form. In 2015, the ministry of communications and IT, the department of telecommunications and the central government had issued an order that restrained service license holders from transmitting pornographic content. The section 25 of the Information Technology Act states that the service license holders who violate the orders are liable to lose their license.

The 2015 notification had listed over 800 websites and had asked service providers to block them as their contents were found to be pornographic in nature.

India’s IMPS rated the best real time payment system in the world

0

India’s Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) has been rated the best real-time payment system in the world, for the second time in a row. In a report titled 2018 Flavors of Fast prepared by Fidelity National Information Services (FIS), 40 real-time payment programs around the world were studied and IMPS was rated the best.

FIS is a global leader in financial services technology, with a focus on retail and institutional banking, payments, asset and wealth management, risk and compliance, and outsourcing solutions. In the fifth edition of the report, the payment programs were rated on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is the highest. India’s IMPS was the only system which was rated 5. Australia’s New Payments Platform (NPP) and Singapore’s Fast and Secure Transfers (FAST) were in second place, each rated 4.5 in the scale. The scale of 5 means that the system meets most features maximising customer value.

The report states that since launching the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) in 2010, India has cultivated one of the most evolved and sophisticated public digital payments infrastructures in the world. The IMPS has been dubbed the “Most evolved, sophisticated public digital payments infrastructure in the world”.

IMPS’ highest rating is based on standard, published API (application programming interface) and strong participation from third-party vendors, says the report. It also states, “one of the fastest-growing immediate payment services in the world, IMPS’ daily transaction volumes have grown to nearly three million a day. The growth is partly attributed to the fact that the second most populous country in the world has widely embraced the smartphone as a payment vehicle, but primarily driven by the additional overlay services offered on top of the faster payments rails. These services are offered through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), an overlay on IMPS that gives an application programming interface (API) to application developers, enabling the initiation and collection of payments”.

IMPS and UPI both have been developed and managed by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). NPCI is an umbrella organisation for operating retail payments and settlement systems in India. This organisation is owned by a consortium of banks and promoted by Reserve Bank of India.

Dance teacher who posed as PM Modi’s ‘spiritual guru’ arrested

0

Delhi Police Crime Branch on Friday arrested one Pulkit Mishra who called himself Pulkit Maharaj for allegedly seeking VIP favours by posing as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘spiritual guru’.

In August, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) had filed a complaint with the Delhi Police after the assistant director at the PMO complained about the fraud a fraudulent letter was issued to the District Magistrate of Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur in name of one ‘Parul’ who claimed to be secretary in Ministry of Arts and Culture seeking security and accommodation for Mishra and his ‘disciples’ who wished to visit the temple. While the requested was adhered to, the district collector got suspicious and sent it to the PMO for verification, where it was found that it was printed on a fake letterhead.

According to Police, Mishra had also forged his photographs with the PM and other high profile officials and also sought security and VIP protocol in different states posing as the PM’s guru. Mishra has been taken into custody and his sister Parul, who posed as his secretary and send out letters on his behalf is being questioned but not yet arrested.

Mishra runs a dance academy and also offers a course in spirituality in Delhi. He claims he performed at a temple in Gujarat when Modi was the chief minister, following which Modi had supposedly invited him to stay at his residence. He has also claimed he was conferred ‘Bharat Gaurav’ award by the President for teaching a blind girl from the US how to dance as well as a directorial position by the government two years ago as a wedding gift.

Uttar Pradesh: 111 antique metal coins assumed to be from Mughal era found

0

A total of 111 antique coins were discovered in Banda district, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. The coins were found when a portion of ground was being dug for construction work carried out under in Kajitola falling under Marka police station limits.

The workers at the construction site apparently got into an argument when the coins were discovered. An altercation between the workers over dividing the coins among themselves alerted the police. The news spread and eventually the police reached the construction site and took possession of the coins. The coins have been kept at the police station for now, which would be later sent to the archaeological department.

Inspector in charge at the station said that the coins looked like that of the Mughal era, and are made of either gold or some other precious metal.

Similar to this incident, a copper pot full of antique silver coin dating back to the 13th century was unearthed as a group of locals engaged in an old temple reconstruction dug up a pit in Kathur village in Uttarakhand’s Pauri district on 21st July 2018. The pot, containing 329 coins, apparently belonging to the Mughal era, weighing nearly four kgs was found when the ground was being dug to construct the main gate for the Bhairav Temple in the village.

Earlier in the month too, Gold coins belonging to the 12th-century had been found during earth-digging for a road construction in Chhattisgarh’s Kondagaon district. It was reported that a pot containing 57 gold coins, a silver coin, and a gold earring was unearthed on 10th July during the construction of a road between Korkoti and Bedma villages.

Rahul Gandhi: Mad(e) in India

0

India’s national entertainer Rahul Gandhi seems to be running out of jokes. Wherever he goes, he has been repeating the same claim of establishing a Mobile factory that would export phones to China and will force the Chinese to use the phones ‘made in’ that town of India.

In the last 15 days itself, Rahul Gandhi has promised Made in Bhopal phones, Made in Dungarpur phones and most recently, Made in Chitrakoot phones. As the Madhya Pradesh elections draw close, the Congress president is touring more and more cities, and as predicted, promising mobile factories everywhere he goes. Like the adorable pug that used to follow previous Vodafone customers before the Zoozoos took over, non-stop laughter follows Rahul Gandhi’s claims be it in public or on social media.

Rahul’s Mobile factory obsession created many a memes and jokes on social media. But Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Chouhan proved that when it comes to puncturing claims and pouring cold water over sweet, dreamy promises, he is the king of all.

Noticing the hypothetical mobile factories threatening to mushroom all over his state, Shivraj Singh Chouhan wondered what has Amethi, where Rahul Gandhi has been an MP for decades now, produced in all these years.

For those unfamiliar with the term, Patli pin ka charger means this :

Rahul Gandhi has a fertile imagination. He sees what others do not and he is certainly oblivious to things that are plainly visible to everyone. His obsession with mobile phones is turning so strong that after BHEL, he wants HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) to start making mobile phones too, it seems if the princeling had his way, he will engage the garment merchants of Surat, software engineers of Bengaluru, sweet makers of Mathura and leather industry workers of Kanpur and just about everyone leave their vocation and start making mobile phones.

As Willy Wonka had his chocolate factory, Rahul Gandhi would have our country turn into a gigantic landmass filled with mountains of mobile phones, all with their respective pin codes engraved with ‘Made in XYZ’ mark.
