Joint Forum of Delhi Govt Employees demand written apology from Kejriwal, calls assault on CS a ‘conspiracy’

0

A resolution passed today by the Joint Forum of Delhi Government Employees demanded a written apology from the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia as a prerequisite for any further dialogue between the political executive and government employees. The resolution was passed in the wake of the alleged assault by Aam Aadmi Party MLAs, including AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal on Delhi Chief Secretary Anshul Prakash.

The Employees’ Forum expressed disappointment that instead of apologising for the physical assault on the government servant, Delhi chief minister and deputy chief minister are in denial, implying that they were part of the conspiracy. Since they are both identified in the FIR, the Forum appealed to the LG and Delhi Police Commissioner to take the action as per law against the CM and Deputy CM, both.

The Forum further noted that not only has the political executive been in denial of the alleged assault, more incidents of public representatives misbehaving and threatening government servants have taken place in the intervening period. The Forum noted that a threat was allegedly made by an MLA, who is not named, in front of the CM and Deputy CM, but both chose to not condemn the same.

Keeping that in mind, the Forum has resolved not to hold any more dialogues with the political executive and communicate only through formal written communication. Hence, while the Forum has resolved to continue working and fulfilling their duties, they will hold a 5-minute silence at 1:30 pm during their lunchtime, as a mark of protest till the time such an apology is not tendered. The Forum also assured the citizens that they are bound by their duty to work for the general public and there will be no stoppage of work.

Congress attacks Modi govt for a scam where their own Amarinder Singh’s son-in-law is an accused

0

The official twitter account of the Congress party on Monday attacked the Modi government for another “fresh banking scam” emerging under his watch:

The party shared a Jansatta article with the comments that another fresh scam amounting to a bank loot had emerged under the watch of the Modi government, while indirectly referring to the case of Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi defrauding PNB of about Rs 11,400 crores which have also landed on the Congress doorstep.

Under this “fresh scam,” it has been noted that the CBI is probing two loans drawn from the Oriental Bank of Commerce by Simbhaoli Sugars Limited, one of the largest sugar mills in the country. One of the loans of Rs. 97.85 crore was declared fraud in 2015 and the company defaulted on another loan amounting to Rs. 109 crore.

It has been alleged that these funds were diverted for personal use. The CBI, as a result, has filed a case against 13 individuals including the sugar company’s Deputy General Manager, Gurpal Singh.

So when it comes to the Congress party attacking the Modi government for this scam, a fatal flaw was noticed by people. Turns out that Gurpal Singh, who is one of the accused, is actually the son-in-law of Congress leader and current Punjab CM Amarinder Singh.

As clear from the episode, the Congress party managed to blame the Modi government for a supposed scam which was allegedly perpetrated by a close relative of their senior leader. This amused people to no end, who ended up reacting:

One Twitter user even speculated about it being a deliberate attempt to malign Amarinder:

The tweet though was deleted after a while by the Congress party, and has since then has been picked up by senior BJP leader Amit Shah:

Just to remind it was only yesterday that the Congress party had angered many social media users by politicising the death of late actress Sridevi. This raises the question whether the party knowingly commits such gaffes in order to seek attention or whether in this particular case, is there some form of internal politics at play?

Former Captain of Indian Football Team, Bhaichung Bhutia, quits Trinamool

0

Former captain of the Indian Football team, Bhaichung Bhutia has resigned from all political posts of the Trinamool Congress and has given up his membership with the party. He announced his decision on Twitter on Monday.

Bhaichung had joined TMC in 2013 and urged more sportsmen to enter politics. However, his stint in politics was not very successful. He had contested the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and the Assembly elections in 2016 on the Trinamool’s ticket but had lost on both occasions.

Baichung had come forward in support of a separate state for Gorkhaland last year. He had openly stated, albeit in a polite manner, that he disagreed with Mamata Banerjee on the issue. But he had not hinted at resignation then. “But my resigning from the Trinamool will serve no purpose, my resigning does not mean that Gorkhaland will happen,” the retired footballer had said then.

Although he has stated that he is not currently associated with any political party, it is likely that he will continue to be involved in politics and join another party sooner than later.

As Suhail Chisty surrenders, we remember the sordid tale of India’s own Rotherham

0

In 1992, the small town of Ajmer in Rajasthan woke up to a shameful, sordid scandal. The scandal involved hundreds of young girls, some college students some still in schools. The news of the scandal broke after a local paper, ‘Navjyoti’ published some nude images and a story which spoke about school students being blackmailed by local gangs.

As per reports, the blackmail operation was soon discovered to be a chain of serial offends. A specific group of local influential men were targetting young girls. They would trap one girl and manage to take obscene images. Then they would blackmail the girl into familiarising them to her classmates and friends. Eventually, other girls would be raped, sexually exploited and have their pictures taken. The cycle continued so forth. The gang continued to expand its operations and victimise an increasing number of girls.

The editor of Navjyoti, Deenbandhu Chaudhary, had admitted that the local law enforcement authorities were aware of the scandal almost since a year before the story broke, but they allowed the local politicians to stall the investigations. Even Choudhary himself was hesitant before running the story, the reason was the perpetrators of the crime belonged to the family of ‘Khadims’. Khadims are the families of traditional caretakers of the Ajmer Dargah, they claim to be the direct descendants of the first followers of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisty and hold significant influence in the local communities. The police had stalled the case because the local politicians warned action against the accuse would lead to massive communal tension.

Chaudhary stated that finally, they decided to go ahead with the story because that seemed to be the only way to wake the local administration into action. Finally, the police lodged an FIR against eight of the accused. Further investigations led to 18 men in total being charged and tensions ran high in the town for several days. Most of the accused were Muslims, many from the families of Khadims and most victims were young Hindu girls.

The town was in shock. People took to the streets to protest and communal tension grew. A three-day bandh was observed and much subsequent news of the widespread exploitation and blackmail started coming in. Retired Rajasthan DGP Omendra Bhardwaj, who was the deputy inspector general of police in Ajmer at that time stated that the social and financial aristocracy of the accused stopped many more victims from coming forward. Another grim realisation was that many of the victims, being young and vulnerable, had already committed suicide.

What followed next was another saga of political influence and administrative incompetence. The case is still far from being closed. Many victims who were supposed to be witnesses, turned hostile. The stink of social stigma and ostracisation was so bad that girls of the town were generalised as being victims of the gang. The number of victims was believed to be several hundred.

Only a few of the victims came forward. The situation was so bad that prospective grooms, who were supposed to marry girls from Ajmer, would come to offices of newspapers, trying to find out if the girl they were going to marry was one of ‘them’. Anant Bhatnagar, state general secretary, People’s Union for Civil Liberties and a resident of Ajmer said that people used to say if the girl was from Ajmer, they would need to find out what kind of girl she was.

Of the 18 accused who were charged with abduction and gang rape under the Indian Penal Code and Indecent Representation of Women (prohibition), one has since committed suicide. Interestingly, Farooq Chishty, one of the main accused who also happened to be a youth Congress leader, was declared mentally unstable. Farooq Chishty was the president of the Ajmer Youth Congress while two other accused, Nafis Chishty and Anwar Chishty were the vice-president and joint secretary respectively of the city Congress unit.

In 1998, a sessions court in Ajmer sentenced eight men to life imprisonment but the Rajasthan High Court, in 2001, acquitted four of them. The sentence of the other four was reduced to just 10 years by the Supreme Court in 2003. They were named Moijullah alias Puttan, Ishrat Ali, Anwar Chishty and Shamshuddin alias Meradona. Another absconder Salim Chishty was arrested by the Rajasthan Police in 2012. Another main accused, Alamas Maharaj, is still at large and is believed to be in the US. CBI has issued a red corner alert for him.

Farooq Chishty, who was earlier declared mentally unstable, was convicted by a fast track court in Ajmer in 2007. In 2013, the Rajasthan High Court upheld the decision though it reduced the period of the sentence from life imprisonment to the period already served by him. The memories of the case were brought back recently when Suhail Chishty, after absconding for 26 years, surrendered at a court on February 15. Musabbir Hussain, joint secretary of the Anjuman Committee, which oversees the Ajmer Dargah stated that the case is a blot in the city’s history and nobody wants to talk about it.

The most disturbing part of the horrific case has been the quiet suffering of the victims. Small time tabloids were quite a sensation in Ajmer at that time. As if the mass exploitation of hundreds of girls was not enough of a blow to the town’s conscience, many victims were even allegedly blackmailed further by these tabloids and local papers. They had access to the explicit images of the girls, and the owners and publishers sought money from the families of the girls to keep them hidden. As per a report in India Today, Madan Singh, the chief editor of one of such papers, named ‘Lehron Ki Barkha’ was one of such people. He had been blackmailing many girls demanding money, threatening to release their pictures otherwise. Most of the girls had given in, while one victim, Pushpa Dhanwani had come forward and lodged an FIR against him.

We have seen many cases of rape, gang rape and exploitation in our country. But the sheer scale and brazen impunity in the Ajmer scandal is something very unusual and had shaken to the conscience of the entire country.

We have seen something similar in Rotherham scandal in the UK. There too, gangs of Muslim men, 80% of whom were of Pakistani origin had carried on serial targetting of young, often minor girls. The girls were chosen, targeted, lured and then raped and blackmailed. As per recent reports, the number of child victims has been officially increased to 1510. A number of factors have kept the scandal going from 1997 to 2013. Negligence of the police, failure of the police, mistrust of the victims due to lack of action, social apathy, stigma and even fear of being labelled ‘Islamophobic’ or ‘racist’ on part of some social workers and law-enforcement officials have let the abuse go on almost unchecked for decades.

Ajmer scandal has the very same tones. The town is hailed as India’s epitome of communal harmony, often citing that Hindus visit the Dargah too. But the shameful scandal is a big question mark on every one of those claims. Nobody would ever know the real number of victims. Nobody would ever feel the fear and mental agony the schoolgirls had to go through. Society is often heartless and brutal to victims of sexual crimes. Justice might never be served to the victims now. There might have been just 18 people arrested, but the society as a whole has been the perpetrator in this case. Our system has failed an entire generation of girls in Ajmer.

CBI registers case against Punjab CM’s son-in-law and 12 others in bank fraud case

0

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against Gurpal Singh, Deputy General Manager in Simbhaoli Sugars Limited and other top officials for the alleged bank fraud case. Singh is son in law of Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder.

According to the FIR filed by the CBI, two loans, one of Rs. 97.85 crore which was declared fraud in 2015 and another loan of Rs. 109 crore which the company has defaulted on payment, from Oriental Bank of Commerce is under probe. The second loan was reportedly taken to repay the previous loan.

A loan amounting to Rs 148.60 crore was sanctioned to the company in 2011 for financing individual, Joint Liability Groups, and Self-Help Groups under the tie-up arrangement under the RBI Scheme to 5,762 sugarcane farmers supplying sugar produce to said private company during the period from 25 January to 13 March 2012. It has been alleged that these funds were diverted for personal use. On non-repayment of the loan, the loan was converted into a non-performing asset (NPA) on 31st March 2015 and later declared as an alleged fraud. The second loan of Rs. 110 crore was sanctioned by the bank to Simbhaoli Sugars on 28th January 2015 to pay the previous outstanding loan of Rs. 97.85 crore, which was declared NPA on 29th November 2016, few days after demonetisation of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 currency notes.

Simbhaoli Sugars Limited is among the largest sugar mills in the country. The FIR filed by the CBI has named company’s Chairman and Managing Director Gurmit Singh Mann, Deputy Managing Director Gurpal Singh, Chief Executive Officer, GSC Rao, Chief Financial Officer Sanjay Tapriya, and Executive Director Gursimran Kaur Mann. Five other non-executive directors have also been named. These officials have been charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery under Prevention of Corruption Act for causing loss to the bank.

Germany to accept Indian passports issued in 2018 again, MEA resolves issue

0

We had reported how if one has got an Indian passport issued or renewed in the year 2018, would face issues in travelling to Germany since Germany was refusing to accept the newer passports because of the manner in which the passport number was punched through all the pages.

As it has now emerged, the Ministry of External Affairs has adequately communicated the issue to Germany, and Germany has started accepting the new passports.

We had reported earlier how several people were facing immense problems due to this issue. This seems to have been now resolved.

Rashtroday 2018: At a massive RSS meet in Meerut, Chief Mohan Bhagwat calls for all Hindus to unite

0

At Rashtroday 2018 in Meerut, the 25th such gathering of RSS workers, Dr Mohan Bhagwat the RSS chief clamoured for the Hindus to unite as India is their responsibility.

He asserted that India is the ancient home of Hindus and that they have nowhere else to go. He also said that if anything untoward happened in the country, we (Hindus) would be responsible. He also called for people to take pride in their identity and culture.

The gathering which took place at Meerut, Uttar Pradesh saw a massive gathering of RSS workers with the organisation claiming that over 3 lakh people attended it. It incidentally also saw more than 3 lakh families irrespective of their religions, castes coming together to make 6 lakh food packets for these attendees.

Journalists even shared the bird’s eye view images of the gathering, which show vast swaths of the ground, symmetrically occupied by the RSS workers:

Other reports quoted Mohan Bhagwat as saying that everyone living in India is Hindu. As per him, even though one may be following different religions, cultures, philosophies, languages but all of them are Hindus.

Earlier too he was seen calling for social harmony in the country. In the backdrop of the Bhima Koregaon violence, which saw devastating clashes between Dalits and Marathas, Bhagwat was quoted as stressing the need for social harmony and called for an elimination of discord in the society.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak nails the problem with India’s education system

0

Indians often wonder what will it take for our country, which has a huge and enviable pool of talented engineers, to take the next step and start competing with countries like USA and China, as far as cutting edge technology is concerned. Although India is emerging as a superpower, most of the focus in Indian business is to make cheaper alternatives to world class technology, rather than developing world class technology from the bottom up, in India itself.

Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak, was in India recently for the ET Global Business Summit in New Delhi. In an interview at the event, he spoke on India, and why he thinks India is not pushing the envelope enough. His views seem to have hit the nail on the head:

Q: What are your views on India? Do you think a global tech company can emerge from here?
A: I am not an anthropologist and I don’t know the culture of India well enough. I don’t see those big advances in tech companies. What is the biggest tech company here, Infosys maybe? I just don’t see that sort of thing coming out of Infosys and I have done keynotes for them three times.

Infosys for long has been India’s premier IT company, but as Wozniak rightly points out, Infosys has never been known as a pioneer in emerging technology, but rather more of a “body-shop“.

He is then asked by the interviewer, about the cause of this problem:

Q: What is the missing link here?
A: The culture here is one of success based upon academic excellence, studying, learning, practising and having a good job and a great life. For upper India, not the lower. I see two Indias. That’s a lot like Singapore study, study, work hard and you get an MBA, you will have a Mercedes but where is the creativity? The creativity gets left out when your behaviour is too predictable and structured, everyone is similar. Look at a small country like New Zealand, the writers, singers, athletes, it’s a whole different world.

Wozniak, though technically an outsider to India, has seemingly identified the problem. He mentions that India’s educational system is rigid and does not allow creativity to thrive. Our education system is currently plagued with far too many exams and bookish knowledge. Children are taught how to pass exams, and not how to use knowledge to move ahead in life.

One of the obvious issues with this is that the products of the Indian education system are usually academically brilliant, but rarely possess the skills and training to learn on their own, or to create something new. The lack of out-of-the box thinking is severely hampering out growth as a country.

At some levels, the Indian society too is to be blamed for not cultivating the right culture. A cushy job is more respected that a daring entrepreneurial project. Parents advise children to take the safer route, rather than the harder path of innovation.

To solve this issue, we need a paradigm shift in our education system. Schools should focus more on learning outcomes rather than exams. Children should be allowed to think independently rather than sticking to the syllabus. Parents too have to play a role in changing their though processes and allowing their children to venture into new areas. Wozniak has identified the problem, we have to find the solution.

Watch: Amruta Fadnavis and Sonu Nigam sing for Mumbai rivers, don’t miss the surprise appearance

0

Maharashtra Chief Minister’s wife Amruta Fadnavis is a bundle of talent. Other than being a banker, she is also a playback singer. While she has regularly championed causes of various charities, this time, she has lent her voice to save the rivers of Mumbai. Her nasal twang and unique ‘off-beat singing’ adds to her charismatic charm. The first lady of Maharashtra has appeared in many such videos recently. In one, she played the cute little teenager with ponytails auditioning for Amitabh Bachchan himself! Though Bachchan Sahab looked a little flustered when Amruta started singing.

Fadnavis, in a video released on Saturday, has teamed up with singer Sonu Nigam himself, for ‘Mumbai River Anthem’. She has not only lent her voice for the song, but she has even acted in the video. She flayed her arms in the air and looked charming as ever.

The song, which talks about the importance of rivers and preserving them, even has a special appearance. About two minutes into the video, you hear the voice of Sonu Nigam singing for the rivers, but the face of the voice is of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis himself. Chief Minister Fadnavis was an absolute natural in the video. His flawless acting could perhaps put the Khans to shame! The husband-wife duo then sings the rest of the anthem together. While his wife is a natural, CM Fadnavis tries hard to match up to his wife’s talent.

We hope Mrs Fadnavis comes up with even more such videos on all such social issues.

Nagaland: Church plays the role of the opposition as it asks BJP to prove its ‘secularism’

0

In poll-bound Nagaland, Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC), the state’s biggest church organisation, allegedly egged by the Congress and BJP’s erstwhile ally Naga People’s Front (NPF), has launched a campaign against the BJP with communal undertones. Painting the BJP as a ‘Hindu’ party that will ‘destroy Christianity’, the Church’s campaign seems to be aimed at boosting the prospects of non-BJP parties in the state. Earlier, the Church council had called Yoga a ‘deeply Hindu’ practice and advised Churches to not practice Yoga and asked the voters to ‘choose between Trishul and cross’.

Nagaland, where the majority of the population follows Christianity, candidates are falling over each other to reinforce their Christian identity and have promised to protect Christianity and safeguard the interests of the church. In an interview with Firstpost, Reverend Zelhou Keyho, general secretary of NBCC, appealed to the BJP to declare itself secular and asked the BJP to answer questions related to its ‘Hindutva connection’. Earlier, he had asked the political parties to question the intent of the BJP. He claims that the places of worship are destroyed and minorities are harassed. He further added that he is not against the BJP but the RSS.

As per reports, Nagaland’s NFP leader and former chief minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu has been telling voters that the BJP has a larger agenda of declaring India a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ where all non-Hindu parties will be banned. “If the BJP comes to power in this Christian state, they (the BJP) will tell the rest of the world that since Christian Nagaland has voted for BJP, Christians want to convert to Hinduism and then they will force us into paganism. Our faith is destined to die and very soon, Nagaland will stop being the abode of Christ and will become the den of anti-Christ where idols will be worshipped and the heathen will rule,” Shurhozelie told a group of youth leaders and social activists in state capital Kohima a couple of days ago. Another Congress leader said that if elected to power, the BJP will make Hinduism a compulsory faith in India.

This is not the first time Church is trying to influence electoral politics. In poll-bound Meghalaya, too, it was reported that in a bid to stop the BJP, the churches are getting into electoral politics.

Last year, during Goa elections, Goan Padre had asked devotees to vote for specific candidates. In fact, a Congress leader from Goa had been forced to retire from active politics after the Church allegedly refused to back his candidature. Following that, in August last year for the by-polls, a magazine named Renowakao, run by a Panjim church Bishop’s House, carried an article which directly attacked the BJP and asked the voters to rein in the ‘tyranny’ prevalent in the whole nation by voting against Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

In the recently concluded Gujarat elections, too, a Church in Gujarat urged the people to save India from ‘nationalistic forces’. In a letter, Archbishop Thomas Macwan associated with the Archdiocese of Gandhinagar had subtly tried to influence the voters’ preference.
