The day Rahul Gandhi kicks off campaign in poll-bound Meghalaya, 115 Congress members resign

0

In a huge embarrassment for the Congress President, the day he is to kick off his election campaign in Meghalaya which goes to vote next month, 115 Congress members resigned from the party over ticket allocation. The decision by All India Congress Committee (AICC) and Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) for ticket allocation in Chokpot is the cause of rebel within the party.

Reportedly, the Block Congress Committee (BCC) of Chokpot constituency was not too happy with the ticket distribution to Lazarus Sangma. The members of BCC Baghmara also decided to put in their resignations prior to ticket declaration. The members said that since they are working closely to the grassroot level, they know the political inclination of the place better and felt Sangma was a wrong choice for candidacy. The members felt that Sangma is an ‘outsider’ and should not be holding ticket or contesting from the seat. The members had demanded a local candidate who would understand their problems better, but their demands were overlooked.

This rebellion of members of Meghalaya Congress comes on the eve of Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s campaign kick off. Gandhi will be on a 2 day visit to Meghalaya where he is expected to interact with state leaders, workers and people in Jaintia and Garo Hills. Gandhi is also expected to meet religious heads, leaders of indigenous faith believers and traditional chiefs during his visit.

Interestingly, within less than a month of Rahul Gandhi becoming Congress President, four Congress MLAs from Meghalaya quit Congress earlier this month to join the BJP. With more people rebelling in Congress in Meghalaya, it remains to be seen whether this dissipating political strength of the Congress party in Meghalaya works in favour of the BJP, thereby enabling the latter to form a government in the state.

The Economic Survey reveals one of the biggest advantages of Demonetisation and GST

0

The 2017-18 Economic Survey was tabled in the parliament today by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, and what made it more intriguing was that it was coming in the backdrop of, two of the most disruptive changes witnessed by the Indian Economy.

These two changes being, Demonetisation of Rs 500, Rs 1000 notes post 8th November 2016 and the roll out of Goods and Services Tax, which were projected by a section of doomsayers to have an adverse impact on the economy. This though was rubbished by IMF chief Christine Lagarde who asserted that the slowdown due to these measures, was merely short term.

Today the Economic Survey not only rubbished the doomsayers by projecting a healthy 7-7.5% growth rate for the 2018-19 fiscal, and also asserted that an economic revival was on the cards. Apart from this, one of the salient points of the Economic Survey has been the positive impact of Demonetisation and GST in increasing the number of taxpayers.

As reported India added a total of 10.1 million new taxpayers since November, 2016. This was about 3.9 million more than the average of the preceding six year figures:

But since virtually every year has seen a growth in the number of taxpayers, the whole addition can’t be attributed to these reforms. Hence taking the general growth trend into account, it was noted that there was a 0.8% monthly increase in the number of taxpayers which turns out to be 10% every year. Factoring this, the growth in 2016-17 actually turned out to be 31% more than the regular trend, which is about 1.8 million additional tax payers.

This increase in taxpayers has been credited to both demonetisation and GST. With demonetisation directly impacting someone’s income, it is understandable that people were forced to register and declare their earnings. But when it comes to the GST which is essentially an indirect tax, the way it might have played a role would be the, earlier unregistered taxpayers having to show white income, which of course meant they had to register under income tax also or else a disparity would have been noted.

Such an impact is in lines with the promised advantage arising out of these scheme, which was increased formalisation of the economy resulting in more Indians coming under the tax net, a cumulative of which we might continue seeing in the years to come.

From ‘Feminist Sholay’ to ‘Feminist A Few Good Men’, these feminism infused scripts are a laugh riot

0

Bollywood celebrities never fail to surprise us. From depicting Karwa Chauth as patriarchal to campaigning against Diwali, we see all kinds of activism from them. Now that they are done shaming Diwali and finished having extravagant New-Year parties that were absolutely environment-friendly, they have found a new obsession. It is shaming the recently released Padmaavat for its alleged “regressive” portrayal of the Medieval customs and practices.

Shefali Vaidya, prominent writer and columnist took to Twitter to express her take on the new-found feminism and the tweet thread had us in splits. She imagined neo-feminist versions of several iconic movie scenes.

She starts from the Bollywood epic Sholay where Gabbar Singh has Viru tied up and is asking Viru’s lady love Basanti for a dance performance.

Then comes the 90s favourite Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge where a visibly agitated Simran is just being ‘set free’ by her patriarchal, Sanghi father. How indecent of Bollywood to have Simran portrayed as a caged bird. Shame on them.

The Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor starrer mega-hit  ‘Deewar’ comes next.

Ms Vaidya doesn’t spare Hollywood too. Understandably so, because after all, that is where most of our Bollywood gets their ‘inspiration’ from.

She comes back to another classic, Pakeezaah.

How can we mention Bollywood and forget King Khan and Farah Khan, especially, the extravagant dance drama called Om Shanti Om

Ms Vaidya, that was hilarious. Thank you for a good laugh amidst all the deafening lunacy of the post-Padmaavat era.

This new and improved script of Padmaavat should put a smile on the liberal, pseudo-feminist face

0

The movie Padmaavat has brought all kinds of virtue signalling, Hindu-hating and Islamic invasion loving liberals out of their lounge sofas and high tables. They gather around the imaginary moral high ground of their version of modern-day feminism and pass judgement after judgement on how the 13th-century queen of Mewar should have behaved.

Just when we thought we have recovered from Audrey Truschke’s relentless portrayal of Aurangzeb as Mr ‘oh so noble’, another wave of virtue signallers started pontificating. This time they were up against Rani Padmavati of Chittorgarh. Apparently, some self-proclaimed feminists have a problem with Rani Padmavati choosing to do jouhar and not be captured by Allahuddin Khilji. Yes, the advocates of “my body my choice” have a problem with a queen not wanting to be raped and turned into a sex slave. Irony just blew itself up!

First, it was Mr Devdutt Pattnaik, who seemed to have forgotten that ‘Sati’ and ‘Jouhar’ are two entirely different things.

When Sanjay Bhansali’s movie ‘Padmaavat’ finally released after much difficulties, some liberated pseudo-feminists like Swara Bhaskar had an issue with the portrayal Queen Padmavati too. For reasons best known to them, they felt ‘reduced to a vagina’. We had published a rebuttal of Ms Bhaskar’s rants yesterday.

However, one Twitter user, Pratyasha Rath, decided to give the liberal feminists an entirely different reaction. Something that should delight them to no bounds. An ‘improved’ modern-day-feminism’ infused version of Padmaavat.

So here we present to our readers; Padmaavat- The Liberal Modern-Feminist version.

So Khilji’s Army enters the palace and because our liberals had a problem with Khilji being portrayed as a barbarian, in the feminist version, the women would rejoice at Khilji’s sight. Only patriarchal, regressive Hindus can see Khilji as someone ‘uncool’. How can he, when he ‘owned his sexuality’ to such an extent.

And why should a Husband be worried about his wife’s safety? That seems to be the regressive thing to do. Hindu men and their silly masculinity, God help us!

Centuries of oppression has made us Sanghi women blind to liberation offered by invading armies. The plight of hundreds of Yazidi women in the modern world is just media misinformation anyway. The ISIS terrorists are not raping and torturing them, they are teaching them how not to limit their existence to their vaginas. Our liberals have the true knowledge.

Yes, many of our Bollywood reformers think Khilji was beyond cool, he made roads and mosques. Who cares that he built them after ravaging Hindu temples? Here is an example:

Isn’t it what these ‘liberated women’ want? Yes, just to show Padmavati made a bad decision by committing Jouhar, they would rather praise life as a sex slave.

In few brilliant tweets, Pratyasha destroys the modern-day pseudo-feminist propaganda of pseudo-activists who just cannot think beyond sex and sexuality. For our Bollywood thinkers, medieval history is nothing, warfare strategies and politics be damned. It has to be all about sexuality and its expression. Some decoupling indeed!

Ms Swara Bhaskar gloriously became a part of a movie that promoted stalking, falsely blaming a decent person for sexual harassment (the poor doctor in Ranjhnaa) and rejoiced getting slapped by the male lead in that movie. But when she saw Padmaavat, the activist in her suddenly woke up.

So as Ms Bhaskar promoted the idea that sex slavery is better than suicide any day, Pratyasha caught that beautifully in another scene.

Finally, Pratyasha brings out the hypocrisy of self-proclaimed activists.

Hope we will one day get to see these scenes made into a real movie. A movie that will be the liberal, pseudo-feminist dream.

Meanwhile, Ms Bhaskar had another meltdown today. For someone who doesn’t want to be ‘reduced’ to a certain body part, she certainly is obsessed with it.

High growth rate, economic revival, GST’s benefits: Some positives of 2017-18 Economic Survey

Ahead of the 1st February Union Finance Budget, the Economic Survey 2017-18 was tabled by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the Parliament. This survey authored by chief economic adviser Arvind Subramanian proceeded to make bold statements about the Indian Economy and projections in the upcoming future.

One of the major projections of the survey is a healthy 7-7.5% growth rate in 2018-19 and projected a higher growth of 6.75% for the current 2017-18 fiscal, as compared to the 6.5% projected by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

From the third quarter of the 2016-17 fiscal, the nation’s economy has had to deal with disruptive changes like Demonetisation and the Goods and Services Taxation regime which came into effect from 1st July 2017. These measures meant that the Indian economy took time in coping with the changes, and slowed down to a 3 year low of 5.7% in the 2nd quarter of 2017.

But as per the Economic Survey, the Indian economy’s revival is alive and kicking:

Subramanian also gave a big thumbs up to the implementation of the GST by calculating a 12% growth:

Demonetisation and GST have also been a boon taxpayer wise, with a total of 1.8 million new Tax filers being registered post November, 2016 and a 50% increase being in the new registrations under the GST’s umbrella:

This 1.8 million increase comes after factoring in the regular year on year growth in the number of taxpayers regardless of these reforms, which was pegged at about 10%. So besides this normal growth of 10%, 1.8 million more people were added to the tax net, which has been attributed to demonetisation and GST.

Even though the direct taxation net has widened post GST, the fact remains that the contribution of the direct taxes towards the government’s revenue is lowest after China.

What also comes as a boost for the economy is the realisation that India’s formal sector (which comprises of establishments which are taxed and monitored by governmental agencies), is greater that what it was believed to be. When one considers the formal sector excluding those on an agricultural payroll, it turns out to be 53% based on establishments which are part of the GST.

The GST data has also provided a new estimate that trade within India accounts for about 60% of the GDP which is more than 54% of what was estimated last year.

This economic survey for the first time also studied the international exports made by the Indian states and almost predictably found that the states which have higher exports are more prosperous. India’s international exports are incidentally also more diversified in terms of the supplying entity, in the sense that, top 1% of the Indian firms account for just 38% of the exports. Comparatively this number stands at 68%, 55% for Germany and USA respectively.

With optimism also comes caution, the economy survey also warns that, the biggest threat to India’s growth story in the next fiscal, is the possible rise of crude prices in the international market. It also asks the government to safeguard against a sharp fall of ‘elevated stock prices’ which might result in a sudden stagnation in the flow of capital.

Overall though it can be concluded that India’s growth situation remains strong, with GST and demonetisation’s benefits starting to noted. Besides this, Subramanian has also claimed that the private investment has picked up. Plus as per him, the long standing twin balance sheet problem, which is a two pronged problem of corporate debt and bank NPA, is being tacked via the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) and Bank recapitalisation.

Now riding on this economic survey, it remains to be seen what measures Arun Jaitley announces in his budget on Thursday.

Scroll learns new tricks from their international counterparts, spreads the ‘Muslims fear backlash’ trope

0

Scroll published a ‘ground report’ today which claimed Muslims in Kasganj are feeling threatened despite a peace meeting. In Kasganj, violence had broken out over a Tiranga Yatra which led to the death of a 22 year old boy, Chandan Gupta. Scroll is following in the footsteps of mainstream around the world who engage in the same trope after every terror attack.

After the terror attack in Barcelona, the media was overflowing with articles which spoke about in some detail of the fear of backlash in the Muslim community in the city. The same was the case after the attack in London when The Guardian published a report about the fear of backlash among Muslims who attended mosques linked to Khalid Masood, the terrorist responsible for the attack.

It was the same story in the aftermath of Orlando where the Americans were absolutely battered with a slew of articles that highlighted the imagined fear among the community of a possible backlash.

And as you might have guessed, the aftermath of the attack on Brussels reveal a similar pattern.

After a truck rampaged through the streets of Nice, France, it was again only the Muslims who were feeling an extreme sense of fear in the country.

And do you really have to guess who were extremely scared after the terror attack in Berlin?

And after the terrorist attack in Paris too, they were extremely scared of a possible backlash.

Despite the barrage of articles portraying the very real fear of a backlash, it has become clear at this point that contrary to what the media wants us to believe, the fear was mostly imagined and the media, intentionally or otherwise, emphasized a threat that was never there in the first place. In fact, the whole ‘Muslims fear backlash’ narrative has become a meme on the internet that has been the object of much ridicule and derision.

The environment that has been created by such misleading articles and encouraging the fear psychosis of a particular community has led to a situation where some Muslims have been reportedly caught lying about being attacked and the media laps up the lie wholeheartedly until it is revealed to a be a complete sham. Very recently, an 11 year old girl lied about her hijab being cut off with scissors which attracted the attention of people across the board who offered her support and sympathy including the Canadian Prime Minister. But then, a police investigation revealed it was a hoax.

Instead of contemplating upon the role it had played in creating an environment where such stories are believed without the slightest bit of scrutiny, the media chose to lecture people about how Muslims were fearing a backlash over the Hijab hoax.

So, according to the media, Muslims were fearing a backlash over a fabricated story of a backlash which the media itself deemed credibility to.

Scroll seems to have learnt a few tricks from their foreign counterparts. A Hindu boy got murdered for reportedly chanting Vande Mataram and Bharat Mata ki Jai and yet, Scroll wants us to believe that the perceived sense of fear among the Muslim community should be the bigger concern here, just as international media wants us to believe the rightwing gaining electorally and offending Muslim sentiments with mere words is a bigger cause for concern than the actual rising threat of terrorism across the world. As has become the norm, the media will overextend itself in trying to deflect attention from the core issue at hand and exhaust all its resources to paint the Muslim community as the victim here. Of course, the livelihood of Muslims was affected, it was communal violence, but to paint a picture where only one community feels fear as innocent victims while the other comes across as vile aggressors is symptomatic of a larger malice and a grander agenda.

If the muslim community is now living in fear, one has to ask if the Hindu community is fine? 1 of their children was shot dead for a rally. Do u think these parents will readily send their children for patriotic rallies, or in areas where muslims are in number? Is this not fear? Is the fear of only one community fear and other is to be ignored? These are questions that the Media that readily peddles this overdone trope must answer.

Shameful: AAP leader refers to raped women as ‘soiled’

0

Preeti Sharma Menon, Aam Aadmi Party leader who is otherwise known for playing low level politics on social media, referred to women who were raped as ‘soiled’, triggering outrage.

She was referring to the film Padmaavat where women committed Jauhar (self immolation to avoid capture, enslavement and rape by Islamic invaders) and was arguing how women who are raped do not lose their right to live. Of course, While the argument is absolutely on point, the fact that AAP leader used the term ‘soiled’ to refer a raped woman is disturbing, to say the least.

That she is unapologetic about her twisted views and abusive trollish behaviour says something about the kind of leadership AAP Supremo Arvind Kejriwal exudes.

She got called out for her use of derogatory words to refer to a rape victim, but she remained unaffected.

But then it would be too much to expect from a party where their leader asks an activist who complaints about sexual harassment to ‘compromise‘. Wonder if Preeti Sharma Menon also thinks the AAP activist who committed suicide was also ‘soiled’?

Woman forced to marry her rapist by the village panchayat, later gets Triple Talaq

0

Even though the Supreme Court has outlawed the practice of instant triple talaq and the Lok Sabha has even passed a bill criminalising the draconian practice, its usage still seems to be continuing en masse.

It was reported by us how things were possibly brazened out when a husband gave his wife triple talaq just a day after the Lok Sabha criminalised the act.

Now ahead of the Parliament session, which might see the introduction of the Triple Talaq bill in the Rajya Sabha, it seems that some husbands have decided to squeeze in their Triple Talaq, before the practice is officially criminalised by law.

It was recently reported how a Husband decided to give triple talaq to his wife, after she asked him to admit their four year old daughter to a school. Apart from this, a woman had alleged that following a dowry dispute her husband gave her triple talaq, and threw her off their house’s roof.

Further, it has been reported that a woman from the Bhiwandi region of Thane, Maharashtra has alleged that her estranged husband sent her triple talaq written on a stamp paper via registered post. She also alleged that her in-laws used to mentally and physically harass her for dowry. In another case, a woman from Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh was allegedly given triple talaq simply because she failed to bear a child, five years after their marriage.

Now in a latest incident, a woman hailing from Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur was allegedly forced to marry her rapist by the village panchayat, after which he gave her triple talaq. The uncle of the victim claimed that she was also mentally tortured after the marriage.

The report claims that the husband took the victim and her father to a deserted place, after which she was forcefully made to put her fingerprints on the divorce papers and later triple talaq was pronounced.

A case has been filed regarding the matter and as per SSP Harpur, Ram Mohan Singh, the matter is being investigated and appropriate action will be taken.

Congress wondered what would happen if ‘BJP has its way’, here’s what would happen if ‘Congress had its way’

0

In a recent video released on Twitter, the Indian Nation Congress claimed that if BJP could have its way, then our history will be distorted and our children won’t be taught the truth about our past. The Congress alleged our children would not know who built the Taj Mahal and who killed Mahatma Gandhi. Apart from the severe exaggeration of the whole thing, the video reeks of crass fear mongering and desperation. In one of my previous articles, I had remarked that the moment the BJP attempts to rectify the biases in our education curriculum, shrieks of ‘saffronisation of education’ will only grow louder but it seems the Congress is engaging in preemptive attacks against any such effort.

The Congress would however, have to concede that since our country became a republic in 1950, they have had their way with our country for almost the entire duration of its sovereign existence, and their record has been far from satisfactory. We have institutions like the Jawaharlal Nehru University at the heart of the capital where it has become fashionable to raise slogans against the nation and celebrate the deaths of our army men. Our children are unaware of legendary heroes from the past and are reduced to glorifying barbarian mass murderers like Khilji and Tipu Sultan who raped our women and pillaged our nation. Our children could quote the names of all the kings of the Mughal dynasty from memory, and yet most of them haven’t even heard of Lachit Borphukan. Our children learn intricate details of the Taj Mahal in their books and yet, are never taught about the glory of Hampi and why the once great city now lies in ruins. The Congress did have its way and as a consequence, our children are blissfully unaware of the glories of our past and the tragedy that befell our great civilization.

However, there are a few issues where the Congress could not have its way and thank the Gods for that, for if they had, it would have been perilous for the unity and integrity of our nation. One such issue was the Communal Violence bill. The National Advisory Council (NAC) approved the bill which if it were enacted, would ensure that only religious or linguistic minorities could be labeled as victims of communal violence. Thus, if a situation arose where two communities were involved in a case of communal violence, only the members of the minority could claim reparation while the majority community would be left without any recourse. Moreover, the bill is based on the dubious assumption that only the minority community could be victims of communal violence and that communal violence could be perpetrated by only the majority community and not the other way around.

Truly, such a nefarious law could only materialize in the think tanks of the Congress party and would have been enacted, if Congress had its way.

Another issue that has been in the news recently is the Rohingya immigration. The Congress and its supporters have been advocating the settlement of Rohingyas, who pose a serious security concern, in India. Despite repeated warnings from security intelligence agencies that there’s massive radicalization among the community, the Congress wants India to provide them shelter even at the risk of endangering Indian lives. The Congress is aware that if Rohingyans are allowed to settle in India, then it will only augment their own vote bank and benefit them electorally. Thus, it is perfectly at ease with illegal immigrants in our country even if innocent Indians have to pay for it with the lives. One can see what decades of Congress rule has done to Assam. Illegal immigration from Bangladesh has led to a massive demographic shift within the state with the consequence that the Assamese are facing the threat of becoming a minority community in their own land. The demographic shift in Assam will have long term consequences for the country and the Congress does not care as they stand to gain from it at the poll booths.

If Congress had its way, perhaps every state would be overridden with illegal immigrants and security would be sacrificed at the altar of electoral politics.

Another instance was the Congress’s repeated failure, or rather unwillingness, to amend the Enemy Property Act. The Congress Party did not ratify the bill which would authorize the government to take over the property of individuals who had declared themselves citizens of Pakistan and China and had betrayed the nation in time of crisis. The Congress was unwilling to implement and amend the law for they feared it would offend the sensibilities of Indian muslims. The Enemy Property Act of 1968 made the central government only the custodian of enemy property. It was only after the BJP came to power that it amended the law to authorize the central government to claim full authority over enemy properties. Congress kept away from the Enemy Property Act because their own ministers were the lawyers for elements fighting to retain their property, which would otherwise be deemed enemy property.

If Congress had its way, as they did all these years, enemies of the nation would have continued to enjoy the fortunes of their anti-national activities in foreign soil.

The sins of the Congress party transcend every manner of decency. But they really hit the bottom of the pit when they tried to create ‘Hindu terrorism’ out of thin air. All the while, we are battered by the Congress party with shrieks of “Terrorism has no religion” and yet the same party, time and again, tried to frame Hindus for terrorism and shame them with the bogey of saffron terrorism. Digvijay Singh even went to the extent of endorsing a book which tried to pin the 26/11 terror attack on the RSS and absolve Pakistan of all blame in the process. The actions of the Congress party post 26/11 proves once and for all that the party can sink to any depth to win elections. National interests are irrelevant issues that can be merrily sacrificed at the altar of democratic politics for the congress party.

We have every reason to believe that if the Congress had its way, Hindus would have been blamed for the attack and Pakistan would have been exonerated.

Another thing which would have never happened if the Congress had its way is the Surgical Strike on Pakistan post the Pathankot attack. The Congress party was in denial of the courage displayed the by Narendra Modi to sanction the army to conduct surgical strikes against Pakistan to eliminate terrorists who are detrimental to the peace and security of India. The Congress could not summon the courage to take any concrete action against Pakistan after the 26/11 terrorist attack so when the BJP did, they even alluded to it being fake and questioned the word of our army men who confirmed the strikes in front of the media.

If Congress had its way, the world would believe the Surgical strike never happened, the morale of the army would be undermined and Pakistan would have succeeded in lying its way through the global community.

The Congress Party ensured that institutions of the country were heavily compromised by foreign NGOs and civil rights activists with dubious record and questionable character. Congress leader Kapil Sibal was the lawyer for Teesta Setalvad who is being probed for fabricating evidence regarding the Gujarat riots and inventing macabre tales to fuel communal passions. Teesta Setalvad, whose NGO’s FCRA license was cancelled by the NDA government for violating FCRA regulations, is accused of misappropriation of funds meant for the welfare of victims of riots. There are reports which indicate that Setalvad’s Sabrang Communications received thousands of dollars in donation from the Ford Foundation between 2004-2014, the decade the Congress party was in power, without government approval. The Ford Foundation was put on MHA watch list in 2015 following a complaint by the Gujarat government that it was interfering in internal politics and funding anti-Indian interests but was removed a year later.

If Congress had its way, foreign funded mercenaries would try their best to subvert the democracy of the country.

One could go on and on about the million transgressions of the Congress party forever. But suffice it to say that if the Congress party had its way, Ishrat Jahan would be celebrated as a martyr.

If the Congress party had its way, Muslim women would continue to suffer from the misery of Triple Talaq till the end of eternity.

If the Congress party had its way, the Bhagva Dhwaj wouldn’t be synonymous with the aspirations of a billion people but be equated with the ISIS flag.

If the Congress party had its way, minorities would have the first claim to resources while Hindus are relegated to the status of second class citizens.

If Jawahar Lal Nehru, the founder of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty had his way, the Somnath Temple would not have been rebuilt.

Before pontificating on the threats that BJP rule allegedly poses, the Congress should take a moment that all these years they had their way and yet, a Hindu boy is murdered on the streets for chanting Vande Mataram. Even now, the Congress associates itself with rabid casteist bigots who fantasize about street wars. The citizens of this country have very little to fear of the BJP but immensely more of your attempts at fomenting divisions within the society with campaigns of ‘Minorities under threat’ based on fabrications and utter lies acting in cohort with your friends in the media.

If Congress had its way, just like Congress had its way for all these decades, people would wish that BJP could have its way again.

President trims guest list for At-Home reception, cuts out family, Lutyens Delhi

0

President Ramnath Kovind cut down the guest list at the ‘At-Home’ reception hosted at Rashtrapati Bhavan for Republic Day this year. As reported by Times of India, the guest list was trimmed from over 2,000 to just 724 and the President made it a point to not invite even his immediate family. Only the First Lady was present at the event. Earlier, in 2016, 2,374 were invited whereas 2,015 were invited in 2017.

The list, instead, included achievers like CBSE, ISC and UPSC toppers, athletes like Phogat Sisters and Under 17 football captain Amarjit Singh. The list also included Milind Kamble, an entrepreneur who established the Dalit Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The family of IAF commando Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala, who was awarded the Ashok Chakra posthumously at the Republic Day function in the morning, was also received by the President at the ‘At Home’.

The thought process behind this redesigning of the list seems to be in line with the general theme of the Padma Awards which were announced recently. Unlike the regular list, this one was not crowded with popular figures from Bollywood, FICCI, Lutyens or Indian cricket team. Apart from Illyaraja , MS Dhoni and Pankaj Advani, most of the awardees were lesser known people who have excelled in their own spheres. They were no where close to the power centers/lobbies/wheeler dealers of Delhi.

As far as the guest list for the President’s dinner is concerned, it was interesting to note that reportedly, many bigwigs from Lutyens zone were missing from the list were . According to the report, the idea was to include people from various spectrums of the society and move away from the South Delhi zone.

While the list was brought down to 724, the mandatory invitees, such as Members of Parliament, former chief justices, heads of defence forces, high commissioners and ambassadors and various constitutional figures were present. It is believed President Kovind wanted to keep the gathering exclusive without the crowd of a large number of guests.

Vice President M Venkaih Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting 10 Heads of ASEAN nations who were chief guests at Republic Day Parade and many members of the Union Council of Minister were present at the reception at the sprawling Mughal Garden.
