PTI Editor-in-Chief’s permanent Lok Sabha pass withheld for making false claims, claims report

0

On 13th November 2017, PGurus, an online portal had reported how the Editor-in-Chief of PTI news agency may have lied about his experience to acquire a permanent press pass to Lok Sabha.

According to Parliament rules a journalist is eligible to get a permanent media pass with RF Tag only if he/she has covered either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha with temporary Session Pass for at least 10 sessions continuously. PGurus claimed that while Vijay Joshi acquired a permanent pass, this criterion wasn’t met.

PGurus reported :

The “claim” of having covered Parliament is a total lie by Vijay Joshi and it can be easily established by perusing his resume and his career record. Joshi had joined PTI earlier in 1986 as a trainee journalist and worked on the Desk. During that period, Joshi not only did not cover Parliament but did not even enter the Parliament complex. He might have seen the Parliament building from his PTI Desk’s office windows, say veteran PTI staffers. In 1989, Joshi quit PTI and joined the Associated Press. Soon after he was posted by the Associated Press to East Asian countries and was based in Singapore. So there was no chance of him covering the Indian parliament. He was back to PTI only in February 2017 as it’s Editor in Chief with the blessings of the outgoing Chief MK Razdan

The report also claimed that at the time, the then Executive Editor VS Chandrashekhar was eligible to become to Editor-in-Chief of PTI, but outgoing chief MK Razdan airdropped Joshi as the chief even though he had been abroad for 28 years.

Today, news surfaced, against reported by PGurus that the Lok Sabha haven found the misrepresentations made by Editor-in-Chief Joshi has withheld his permanent press pass to the LS.

The report said :

Last week, the Press Advisory Committee withheld his permanent pass and directed him to undergo mandatory Parliament reporting experience for two consecutive sessions. So as per the decision, Vijay Joshi will get only temporary session pass and will have to cover two sessions with the temporary pass to get qualified for the permanent pass.

Reportedly, the Advisory Committee of Lok Sabha had urged Joshi to produce his passport and insisted on criminal proceedings. But the Chairman of the committee, DP Kamath decided against the criminal proceedings and directed Joshi to cover two proceedings with a temporary pass.

Allegedly, In his application to Lok Sabha, Vijay Joshi claimed that he covered Parliament during 1991 to 1994. This was a total lie as he was not in India during that period and came back to India only in February 2017.

A Doctor explains the Judge Loya ECG conundrum

0

On 27th November, Indian Twitter developed cardio-phillia. The Indian Express published a story about judge BH Loya’s death which sort of contradicted findings in the Caravan Magazine.

Now the moment the Indian Express counter came, expectedly the Left Wing twitter was abuzz with conspiracy theories.

So I just got on to this Twitter thread by a journalist, where the favourite topic of discussion/outrage of the day was ECG of Loya .

The claims by this journalist were :

  1. ECG was normal
  2. Time/date was wrong and it was not possible
  3. It was a fake/manufactured ECG .

I protested, of course.

What happened next was totally amusing and peak twitter-

  1. I got abused for being a fake/troll doctor
  2. some body who gets ECG quarterly, boasted of being admitted in US has/is an advertiser all advised me some with # chal bhaag hashtag

Now thankfully I am an MD (medicine), have been working in cardiology for three years at a CCU. I am USMLE certified (US license) and have practised and worked in New york city for 1 year as a medicine resident.

Basically the only thing I didn’t have which these twelebs did, was confidence and power of snark. Shows the hollowness of many of these twelebs.

Indian express in due time offered following clarification :

Dr Ranganathan himself put up some great counters that included Medical and non medical facts.

I am also weighing in on the subject as a Medical professional by answering some questions that may be asked about this entire ECG controversy.

  1. Is ECG normal ?

ECG was abnormal. (ST depression in 1, aVL , hyperacute T waves in v2,V3,V4) . V1 seems to disconnected. Appears to be Acute coronary syndrome (STEMI mimic- Hyperacute T waves) within window period. In the setting of persistent retrosternal chest pain, patient should be given aspirin, sorbitrate, atorvastation, clopidogrel, ideally should be referred to a higher centre with PCI/thrombolysis facility.

  1. Why is date/time wrong 30/11 6.11 when it is claimed that ECG was done at 4.45-5 AM on 1st december.

Date/time was obviously wrong, but it is possible because ECG machines imported from USA often get reset and technician doesn’t bother to enter ECG manually because of a combination of laziness/emergency. Also the time 6.11 in US EST was suspiciously closer to 4.41 IST. People objected AM/PM was not mentioned but often there is an option of entering 12 hour format which is the default in many machines i work in my set up.

  1. How are you so sure Sanghi ?

I am only offering a potential cause. Case records, Doctor testimony are gold standards in these cases instead of single ECG with misprints as I mentioned

  1. This is ECG of another patient – Faker/Feku ?

Yes title is wrong, written with pen. But time/date are easiest things to “fix” than an ECG with 12 leads with ECG showing abnormality. If I were to fix I would manually type name proper date and time to correct order of seconds and pick up full blown MI (few doctors on twitter got it wrong too) from an already admitted patient.

An old medical joke goes like

Question : Give me an example of double-blind randomized clinical trial?

Answer : Pick two Orthopedicians at random and get them to read an ECG.

The moot point is correct recognition of Acute coronary syndromes is uncommon and hence even medical doctors struggle with it, leave alone laymen.

  1. OK. How often are these date/time/name anomalies in common practice ?

I see them in 60-70% ECGs in my set up a busy government hospital. I interpret 25-40 ECGs every day. Most of them are referrals from outside. In chest pain emergencies the figure with either wrong date/time/name is even higher. In yesterday night call, none of the ECGs had all of three date/time/name correctly entered. I have worked in different Indian hospitals and unfortunately you have to take my word for it. If one can confirm with other doctors, they would probably say the same. The first thing we are trained in ER is to verify time of all such documentation with patient concerned more so in acute coronary syndrome as there is a window period for PCI/thrombolysis intervention.

  1. But would not this be treated as flimsy evidence in courts ?

Ideally date/time should be entered correctly in any medico-legal case. It is often not done and entered manually. That is why case sheet and doctor testimony is the GOLD STANDARD even in courts. You can also ask Dande Hospital for some previous ECGs of the day -but in my opinion it all boils down to trust on doctor/hospital set up.

  1. But case sheet is written by pen as well, can it be fudged easily ?

Well, ideally we need digitally written notes with EMR, which would be difficult to alter and leaves timestamps. 99% of hospitals in India don’t have electronically written daily notes. Not even high-end corporate hospitals in India. So eventually you have to trust the doctors.

  1. I am still suspicious. Is there any way to resolve this quagmire ?

Yes. Meditrina Hospital which administered DC shock during CPR – must be having other set of ECGs. Pre DC shock and flat line for death. Since the ECGs are old you might get a print out. Death certificate should be there with correct details.

However if you already believe everything is fudged. Why bother?

  1. Was Dande Hospital right in referring patient without a doctor ?

Ideally such cases should be accompanied with a doctor and medical ambulance often not available in Indian scenario. However in STEMI mimics time is muscle door to needle or thrombolysis time should be less than 90 minutes.

  1. Why was autopsy done?

Many a times tertiary hospitals insist on autopsy if it is a high-profile case. Nobody wants to pick up dead body

  1. You are saying repeatedly that case records clinical history and examination (notes) are a critical evidence in this case. If so why do ECG at all. Why are you bluffing ?

Short answer :

No investigation/test can be divorced from its clinical context. It is a critical part of medicine, one of the reasons computers have not replaced humans in management of chest pain and it won’t be happening anytime soon. Even though they started “reading” ECG better than humans almost 30 years back. In other words in medicine, context is the king.

Long answer :

In Chest pain emergencies – a single normal ECG misses the diagnosis up to 50% of the times. That is why the recommendation is to get three sets of ECG and three sets of cardiac enzymes at 0,6,12 hours since start of severe chest pain (defined as peristing greater than 30 minutes,+- mid-sternal+- radiation) to be sure that heart attack is effectively ruled out.

Suppose the ECG (which I would call moderately abnormal is judge Loya’s case) was normal. Could the doctor have ruled out heart attack if it was normal as some twitterattis and even some docs to my surprise, were claiming? The answer is no. He would still have to run the protocol to be sure. However the Doctor on duty in Dande hospital is to be commended for picking up this ECG early (in retrospect he was right because Dr. Loya collapsed 1 and a half hours later)

One of the reasons most US hospitals have telemetry units that will hold you up to 12 hours to be effectively sure. Even if you visit resource-constrained Indian hospitals they will do 2-3 sets of ECG and cardiac enzymes to effective rule out heart attack.

Have you ever wondered why chest pain is the most common symptom given by politicians when they are about to go to jail – one is obvious stress, second important factor is that it will assure a hospital stay of at least 12 hours.

Not only in unstable patients, context is very important in stable patients as well. Lets discuss a famous example given by Nassem Taleb in his book ‘Fooled by Randomness’.

Even if a test has only 5% false positive rate, and 0% false negative rate, the odds that you have a certain disease will only be 2% even if the test is positive in populations/patients with low base-rate (1/1000). The base rates in medicine are determined from a doctor’s experience, patient’s history and patient’s examination – A critical part of what we do. This is called Bayes Theorem. See more examples about use of Bayes theorem in Jesus miracles and the Famous Taxi-cab problem by nobel-prize winners Tversky and Kahneman.

A cab was involved in a hit and run accident at night. Two cab companies, the Green and the Blue, operate in the city. 85% of the cabs in the city are Green and 15% are Blue.

A witness identified the cab as Blue. The court tested the reliability of the witness under the same circumstances that existed on the night of the accident and concluded that the witness correctly identified each one of the two colors 80% of the time and failed 20% of the time.

What is the probability that the cab involved in the accident was Blue rather than Green knowing that this witness identified it as Blue?

Most subjects gave probabilities over 50%, and some gave answers over 80%. The correct answer, found using Bayes’ theorem, is lower than these estimates:

There is a 12% chance (15% times 80%) of the witness correctly identifying a blue cab.

There is a 17% chance (85% times 20%) of the witness incorrectly identifying a green cab as blue.

There is therefore a 29% chance (12% plus 17%) the witness will identify the cab as blue.

This results in a 41% chance (12% divided by 29%) that the cab identified as blue is actually blue.

Medical evidence synthesis with prior knowledge and data from tests is a very important part of what we do as Cardiologists. The symptoms type of angina (chest pain) is used to determine what is the base-rate in that population and the result of the test is used to update that probability.

In my practice, I regular use this tests in a self-coded pre-test calculator diagnosing coronary artery disease and have coded in a medical software that I wrote in my TMT lab, as do most of the doctors though more intuitively and perhaps in a less mathematical fashion. This wonderful New York times article talks about other uses of Bayes theorem from interpretation of clinical trials to law

In summary, you can’t interpret that ECG in isolation, case history, medical records are the most important part of medicine and will be the first piece of evidence that should be discussed as part of diagnosis in courts or in medical ward rounds for that matter.

12 . Which paper should we trust, Caravan or Indian Express ?

Both papers erred , While Indian express story erred in not querying the hospital at the time about date/time mis-match on ECG on first print(they issued a clarification later) leading to all conspiracy theories, the Caravan journalists did an extremely shoddy job of not talking to doctors/hospital at all. They claimed there wasn’t even an ECG, without due diligence. If you are out-sourcing even fact-gathering or a basic fact-check to readers then what is the purpose of your existence apart from being an instrument of politics or a medium to carry advertisement as your critics often accuse you of.

As a doctor, I wish more editors would hold these journalist to the same standards as they expect from us doctors. If we would misreported the aforesaid ECG or fail to ask for a clinical clue at all, in medicine it often means a life lost. In media-space that is perhaps loss of credibility for journalism fraternity as a whole.

Demonetization impact: Tax Department to send notices to 1.16 lakh depositors

0

While blind critics like Mr Vinod Dua may be crying hoarse in video after video, that demonetization has failed, black money got converted into white, the Income Tax Department has not let its gaze move away from the target.

Last week we had reported how the IT Department had issued detailed guidelines to tax officers, which are to be considered while ordering scrutiny assessments pertaining to filing of revised/belated returns by assessees, post-demonetization period. Scrutiny assessments refer to the cases which are picked by the IT Department for detailed investigation, and verification with supporting documents.

This action was preceded by Operation Clean Money, involving e-verification of large cash deposits made during 9th Nov to 30th Dec 2016. In only the “first batch”, about 18 lakh persons had been identified in whose case, cash transactions don’t appear to be in line with the tax payer’s profile.

Now, thanks to data mining, the IT Department has zeroed in on a fresh category of depositors. Out of the 18 lakh persons mentioned above, from whom preliminary responses were taken, individuals and companies who have still not filed their I-T returns have been segregated into two categories – those depositing more than Rs 25 lakh in bank accounts and those putting in Rs 10-25 lakh each.

Based on this data, The Income Tax Department has slapped notices on 1.16 lakh individuals and firms who made cash deposits of more than Rs 25 lakh in bank accounts post note ban but failed to file returns by the due date. These people have been asked to file their returns within 30 days, thus explaining the source of cash.CBDT Chairman Sushil Chandra also said that the second category of persons, i.e. those who have not filed returns and have deposited Rs 10-25 lakh each, would get notices in the second phase of this operation.

Besides these persons, the IT Department may also eye the  companies whose names had been struck off by the Registrar of Companies, based on the data received from banks. Data from banks, regarding these suspected shell companies, showed shocking irregularities.

While some in the media and other analysts may have already signaled demonetization to be a dud, based on the actions of the IT Department, it seems the depositors will be held accountable for every rupee. The game seems to have just begun.

Read High Court’s comments while throwing out The Wire’s appeal against gag order in Jay Shah defamation case

On October 8th 2017, the leftist propaganda website The Wire had published a shoddy hit job against Jay Shah, who is BJP party president Amit Shah’s son. In no time, their article, which was riddled with glaring loopholes, was decimated by us. Subsequently, The Wire had selectively altered its story, but the shaky ground on which the story stood remained thus.

After this hit job by The Wire, Jay Shah had slapped a 100 crore defamation suit on the website and the author of the article, Rohini Singh.

What followed was the usual liberal rhetoric. Opeds were written about how freedom of expression is in danger and Press freedom is being thwarted.

Soon, Jay Shah approached the civil court at Ahmedabad which granted him an ex parte ad-interim order against ‘The Wire’ and its founding editors, including the author of the article, Rohini Singh, stating that they be barred from publishing anything, directly or indirectly in connection with Jay Shah.

“The Wire” then approached the High Court of Gujarat at Ahmedabad, appealing against this particular gag order. The High Court made some interesting observations and rejected the plea of ‘The Wire’ against the ex parte ad-interim order.

In paragraph 5.2 of the counsel of Jay Shah submitted, that the defendants (folks from The Wire), “are reluctant to even appear before the Trial Court”. The counsel also submitted, that except for Defendant No. 2 (which appears to be Mr. Siddharth Varadarajan judging from the tweet attached herewith) who filed an adjournment application in the Trial court, the other defendants have not even filed their appearance before the Trial Court, though they were aware of the proceedings and had even received the full set of papers within 4 days from the date of initiation of the proceedings by the Plaintiff (Jay Shah) and passing of the impugned order by the Trial Court.

The submissions of the Counsel of Jay Shah, was later also confirmed by the High Court in its judgement. The lack of motivation on that part of Team Wire was mentioned in Para 10.4 which has been discussed further in the article.

Another interesting observation is made in Paragraph 8.7 of the High Court judgement.

The court has made it amply clear in its judgement that till the ex parte ad-interim matter (gag order matter) was heard, none of the defendants (folks from The Wire) had filed even an appearance before the Trial Court, much less any reply. Defendant No. 2 (Siddharth Varadarajan) had filed appearance on 8th November 2017, only to take adjournment before the Trial Court.

Siddharth, on 13th November 2017 had tweeted that his team was outside the Ahmedabad court waiting for Jay Shah who did not show up. The court has observed that Defendant No. 2 filed an adjournment application on 8th in the Trial Court, citing the reason that the matter is pending in the High court, and that none of the other defendants had even filed an appearance or reply till 16th, when the matter was heard.

The next pertinent observation is made in Paragraph 10.1.

The court observed that under the provision of Order 39, Rule 4 of the Code, The Wire could have approached the Trial Court itself to modify and/or vacate the ex parte ad-interim impugned restrain order dated 12.10.2017 (Gag order), but ‘The Wire’ did not avail of this option. The court then makes a rather scathing indictment of team Wire saying that “there is reluctance on their part, even to put their contest, on merits, before the Trial Court”.

If the court has observed that team Wire was RELUCTANT to contest their case on merits before the Trial Court, one wonders why they went around town asking for donations in the name of ‘fighting for freedom of the press’?

The High Court didn’t indict The Wire of lack of motivation just once. It makes a similar observation in Paragraph 10.4.

The High Court of Gujarat at Ahmedabad observed that since “there is no motivation on the part of any of the defendants to contest the matter before the Trial Court, keeping in view the above noted proposition of the law, this court finds that these Appeals need not be entertained on merits”. This would, in laymen terms mean that the court refused to entertain The Wire’s appeal of vacating the gag order on the ground that The Wire was least motivated to explore their options of approaching the Trial Court and argue the case on merits.

In the final portion of the judgement, the High Court observes thus :

The High Court has observed that team Wire can, if they so choose, approach the Trial Court to decide the injunction application within 30 days from today.

In the light of this judgement from High Court of Gujarat, one is forced to wonder why team Wire was grandstanding after the restraint order, when they were reluctant in “arguing the case on merits” according to the High Court. Why did they approach the High Court when, as per the High Court, they could have simply approached the Trial Court appealing to modify or vacate the gag order. Most importantly, one wonders, that since The Wire has asked for donations in the name of fighting this case, are its readers aware of all the developments and the seemingly lackadaisical manner in which The Wire has chosen to defend itself in the court of law.

The case is sub judice, hence, it would be incorrect to pass a judgement one way or another, and it is certainly not my place or intention to do so. But after today’s order, it certainly seems like the future holds interesting surprises.

Uttar Pradesh Police exposes NDTV’s lies

0

NDTV today published a story which claimed that the Uttar Pradesh Police had jailed 4 donkeys for allegedly eating expensive plants.

The Uttar Pradesh Police clarified that UP Police had nothing to do with the incident and pulled up NDTV by asking them to check facts first before publishing the story.

NDTV’s Managing Editor Suprana Singh, came to defend the lies by asking UP Police to first read the story before asking NDTV to check facts. A bit rich coming from a channel which employs people who have severe lack of comprehension skills and allegedly promotes censors stories.

The UP Police then asked Suparna Singh to probably practice what she preaches, considering the video they had posted mentioned UP Police twice.

UP Police then quoted the anchor in the video NDTV had posted to call out Suparna Singh’s bluff.

At which point, Singh shifted goal post and said how she was talking about the ‘print’ story and not the ‘video’ which indeed does question why UP Police is busy detaining donkeys while real criminals run loose.

She then said that the video will be removed, but the story will stay which does not mention UP Police as Singh says. One wonders, then, who ‘jailed’ the donkeys in Uttar Pradesh, if not the Police?

To this, UP Police threw some shade and wished NDTV good luck for having two separate versions for video and print for a single story.

After Mumbai Police, UP Police is learning the ropes of social media and how!

How Rajdeep Sardesai grilled Mamata Bannerjee with some tough questions

0

All of us have our opinions about the state of journalism in India and across the world. Indian journalism has been broadly analyzed in two eras. One pre-2002 and another post-2002. One of the shining lights of the post-2002 era of Indian journalism has been Rajdeep Sardesai.

When Rajdeep finds time from enjoying the largesse given to him by Mukesh Ambani and from writing error-prone books on cricket, he hosts evening shows on IndiaToday TV. His ongoing stint in this channel has completely sidelined the gen-next stars like Gaurav Sawant and Shiv Aroor. Not only do these young Turks get smaller slots on prime time, but most of the important interviews are now conducted by Rajdeep.

After a thoroughly engaging interview with Sonia Gandhi, followed up by one with the Yadavs, India was waiting with bated breath for Rajdeep to show us more of his talent.

It came via a masterpiece of an interview with Mamata Banerjee. When one gets a chance to interview any politician, it is expected that important questions are asked. Rajdeep did not disappoint. Here is the sample list of questions (not verbatim) that should be part of the curriculum in Journalism 101:

Rajdeep: How are you going to bring back the sweetness of the Rasagolla?

Rajdeep: You say there is super emergency in India. But in Bengal, when a doctor puts a facebook post on Dengue, he is suspended.
Mamata: This is a petty question.
Rajdeep: (silence) (Next question).

Rajdeep: You supported GST
Mamata: We did not. It was by voice vote.
Rajdeep: (silence) (Next question).

Rajdeep: You were the first to oppose demonetization
Mamata: Yes. What is the result? Recession started…
Rajdeep: (Next question)

Rajdeep: You embrace Rohingyas?
Mamata: We follow the UN policy
Rajdeep: Forget the controversial political questions…

Rajdeep: You say you haven’t changed. But I see you have become thinner. What have you been doing? Are you on a diet?

Rajdeep: What is the secret of you staying so fit?

Rajdeep: When you are not doing politics, how do you keep yourself entertained?

Rajdeep: I will give you an option today. Either you sing for us or draw for us.

(thunderous applause)

Rajdeep starts this interview session with congratulating Mamata Banerjee for getting full GI certification for Rosgulla. Basically, winning the battle against Orissa. This was fake news, but then again, we aren’t surprised that Rajdeep would start with fake news, are we? Anyway, it was a fairly long Modi bashing session, where Rajdeep asked leading questions and Mamata didi obliged. Rajdeep could have asked her about her hypocrisy on Freedom of Expression. Her shocking stand on celebrating Sardar Vallabhai Patel’s birth anniversary. How the Supreme Court slammed her for not respecting Federal Structure in the Aadhaar case. When she says how important Bengal and Bengalis are to her, Rajdeep could have asked her why she passed diktats on Durga Puja for the sake of minority appeasement. Why radical muslim elements in her state are free to threaten India’s sovereignty because of fellow muslims from other countries? Why did she issue a gag gag on her ministers over speaking about Triple Talaq? Why did jihadi mobs feel free to run amok and kill a 65-year-old man in Basirhat?

The list of questions a true journalist might want to ask a political leader like Mamata Banerjee is endless. And any journalist worth his salt would have used this opportunity to act as the representative of the people, asking questions that deserve answers. But Rajdeep isn’t known for his astuteness. Right before the Uttar Pradesh elections, he had done a fluff interview of Akhilesh Yadav, perhaps in the hopes of thwarting BJP’s inevitable win in UP. And now, with BJP foraying into Bengal and upcoming Gujarat elections, he just had to do another fluff interview sans tough questions that gave the interviewee ample opportunity to trash Narendra Modi without answers for her own sins.

Rajdeep and his supporters may claim that since it was a conclave by India Today, and Mamata Bannerjee was a guest, it was the host being courteous to the guest. But are such courtesies reserved for guests who do not have the first name Narendra and the last name Modi? Some time back, Rajdeep had played host at another conclave and the tone and tenor of his questions had left then CM Modi remark that the organizers should introspect on the choice of the interviewer in the future.

While tragic, Rajdeep’s bias is evident and expected. Perhaps, instead of trying to defeat Narendra Modi through biased journalism and shaming the profession in the process, Rajdeep should consider joining politics. At least he would spare the profession the disgrace he brings to it.

How Vinod Dua and The Wire spread half-truths and whole lies – Part 1

The old school method of spreading lies amongst public is to write articles. But there is a drawback: since text can be searched via search engines, it’s easier to bust such fake news. As a result, over the past few months, we have seen how lies after lies are published in the leftist propaganda website The Wire has been exposed. So how does one avoid this? Publish videos instead.

Publishing videos is much better since the content in it can never be referenced or searched. Further, owing to wide penetration of 3G and 4G services, videos become viral much faster.  Now all you need is a sobre-looking, reliable face to rattle out half-truths and whole lies. And Vinod Dua fits this role perfectly. Through his video series titled “Jan Gan Man ki Baat“, Dua, peddles some of the finest unadulterated propaganda, which will be dissected one by one.

A disclaimer though: This is not an exhaustive list of lies. There may well be many factual inaccuracies which have been missed. This article only tackles the glaringly obvious and catastrophically major factual inaccuracies in his videos. Some of the lies have been repeated by Mr Dua in subsequent videos, and they are not counted separately.

Most importantly, this is only Part -1 of an ongoing series fact-checking each of Vinod Dua’s videos:

1. Video number 3, From 1 min onwards: (Also Video number 29, from 8.10 mins onwards)

Dua claims that in a rally, Modi took credit for the work of Indian scientists involved in launching satellites. Dua then plays a video of Modi in a speech. The transcript of the video is as follows:

Modi: If an enemy’s missile comes towards us, then our scientists have designed such a missile, that it can intercept and destroy the enemy missile while it is 150 kms away in the air itself. But I know, they will ask for proof. You want to see the proof? Go up 150 kms in the air.

It is unclear how Modi is taking credit of the work of scientists here, since he himself says our scientists have developed these missiles. Or does Dua want the credit to go to Nehru-Gandhi family? Because around 4 mins into the video, Dua credits this achievement to Dr Vikram Sarabhai and *drum-rolls* Jawaharlal Nehru! So children, satellites launched and developed anytime in the future, are Nehru’s gifts to India, per Dua.

2. Video number 5, From 1.20 mins onwards:

Dua criticizes PM Modi for speaking about religious discrimination in UP while providing electricity, and for construction of shamshans and kabrasthan. While he reads couplet to further criticize these statements, he conveniently forgets to mention that both the statements about religious discrimination in UP were found to be true.

3. Video number 6, From 3.40 mins onwards:

Dua states that it has been reported that covers which look like fingers, to be worn over human fingers, have been developed so that one person can change the cover and vote repeatedly. He credited this invention to “Indian genius”. Mr Dua should stop believing Whatsapp forwards since the finger caps were actually from Japan, invented for use by members of Japanese mafia, who had to cut their fingers off. Incidentally, in Video 10, he appeals to viewers to not trust anything they see on social media!

4. Video number 12, From 0.35 mins onwards:

Dua here repeats the claim that Modi does not believe in climate change. This claim is based on a short footage of Modi speaking to school kids. More recently, this out of context video was used by comedy group AIB, in a comedy video. Once social media users exposed how they had used edited footage, they deleted the video. In the complete video, Modi had stated how the bad habits of humans have resulted in us harming the environment. He then gave points of advice to the schoolkids that humans should love and not struggle with nature. So clearly from the video, not only PM Modi wasn’t refuting climate change, he actually was telling the school kids how the changing habits of humans have resulted in the degradation of the environment. While a comedy group has deleted the video, a ‘serious host’ like Dua retains it. Worse, he repeats the same claim in Video number 14, at 5.20 mins.

5. Video number 14, From 4.50 onwards:

Here, Dua claims that Minister Maneka Gandhi, has started a curfew system for girls aged 16-18 years, because she believes that once it is dark, there are hormonal outbursts in girls. Dua then claims that she had said this only about girls. The number of facts distorted in this innocuous line are too many. The statement which is being referred to, is from a show on NDTV, video can be seen here.

Firstly, her statement was in response to a question by a girl, who asked her views on the curfew system which exists in colleges, not a system being introduced by Maneka Gandhi, as Dua claimed. Secondly, Gandhi states that as a parent, she would expect her daughter or son, to be safe in college. She also says that during the age of 16-18 years, children may have hormonal outbursts, and curfew system, which exists all over the world, could be to protect the children from themselves. She reiterates that the same deadlines, should be put for the boys hostel as well as the girls, and the deadline time is debatable. She closes with the sentence: “Why should boys be allowed to wander about the campus after 6pm in the evening, let them also stay in and let them do their work.”

6. Video number 24, From the start:

Dua tries to target the UP Govt for taking action on illegal slaughterhouses. For this he concocts a cocktail of whataboutery and half-truths. He asks why other sectors are not being targeted. Secondly, he claims that the unorganized, unlicensed sector is “paak saaf” (as clean as milk). For his whataboutery, he claims, those selling vegetables, newspapers, milk, eggs, tailors, cobblers, cycle repairers and laundries do not have license, and just like them, slaughterhouses too, do not have licenses. Dua forgets that all the aforesaid jobs do not need a license whereas slaughterhouses need a license since they have to maintain hygiene. Does Dua seriously think people will equate a cobbler with a slaughterhouse? Next he glorifies the unorganized, unlicensed sector for providing jobs and helping the economy. He doesn’t of course mention that India’s tax base is abysmally low, also because of the “paak saaf” unorganized sector.

At around 3.19 mins, he says that he feels not only the unorganized slaughterhouses, but the entire unorganized sector is being targeted. Then, at 5.10 mins, a journalist at TheWire is made to speak, and she then says that it is rumoured that slaughterhouses are being targeted because they are owned mostly by a “specific community”. Which is it Mr Dua? Is the entire unorganized sector being targeted or is only a “specific community” being targeted. You can’t have it both ways!

7. Video number 26, From 4.15 mins onwards:

Based on the “analysis” from a reader, Dua claims that UP’s anti-romeo squads have a hidden ulterior motive, which is, to stop inter-caste marriages. He provides zero data, zero logic, zero anecdotal evidence even, to present this hypothesis, and instead proceeds to bash upper castes. This claim is asinine, insulting and laced with communal agenda which isn’t even worth debunking.

8. Video number 27, From 5.45 mins onwards:

Dua repeats the lie that BJP had blocked GST for 7 years, when they were in opposition. This is a lie because many non-BJP states and even Congress states had objected to UPA’s version of GST. Even as late as December 2013, just a fey months before end of UPA’s 10 year rule, it was reported that the Congress-led ruling UDF government in Kerala has lent support to the Gujarat government’s apprehensions on GST. Again in July 2013 it was reported that 3 non-BJP states, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, and Congress’s own Maharashtra had opposed a provision in the GST Bill. Mr Dua needs to read up.

9. Video number 29, From 0.55 mins onwards:

Dua takes up the mantle of speaking against trolling, and claims that in cyber-space, members of a “specific party” only engage in trolling. It does not take much to guess which party is alluding to, but having said that, any literate social media user will know that trolling is something which has transgressed political and even national boundaries. If Dua wants to lay the blame of all the trolling on social media at the feet of one “specific party”, he should provide statistical proof, or admit that he is indulging in propaganda.

10. Video number 30, 0.10 mins onwards (Also in Video number 38, 6.25 onwards):

Dua recounts the BJP’s “jumlas” and mentions that in one of the jumlas, it was claimed that within 100 days, black money from abroad, would be brought back to India. This is an outdated lie Dua is repeating. Rajnath Singh is on video, clearly saying that an enquiry will be started into the Black Money case within 100 days of coming to power. At no point in time, any BJP politician had claimed to bring back black money in 100 days.

11. Video number 30, 2.10 onwards:  (Also in  Video number 53, 3.05 onwards):

Dua, along with ‘The Wire’ cofounder Sidharth Bhatia, claims that India has not taken any action on the people named in the Panama leaks. He even issues a challenge to the PM to act on these names. This video was published on 6th April 2017. April 2016 reports: Panama heat: Income Tax Department knocks on 3 Delhi doors, PM Modi steps in: Income Tax, RBI panel to probe Panama Papers trail, I-T dept sends notices to Indians named in Panama Papers.

Income Tax department has been probing all the people named from April 2016 itself, on what basis did Dua claim that no action was being taken? A few months before Dua’s lies it was reported that even the ED had widened its probe based on Panama papers. A few days before Dua’s lies, it was reported that the Income-Tax Department had launched a probe into the suspected undisclosed foreign assets held by more than 1,900 persons of Indian origin, who either control or have financial interests in close to 3,000 companies incorporated in Panama. What are you smoking Mr Dua?

12. Video number 34. 0.20 mins onwards: (Also video number 49, 1.10 mins onwards)

Dua makes the oft-repeated claim about demonetization, that during the process all the “black” money turned “white”, as it returned to the banks. We had explained here that “black” money can “become” white, only if appropriate taxes have been paid on it. Much before Dua’s above video, the Income Tax Department had already launched Operation Clean Money, through which, in only the “first batch”, about 18 lakh persons had been identified in whose case, cash transactions did not appear to be in line with the tax payer’s profile. The investigations in many cases are over, and in some cases further action is being taken. If as Dua claims, all the money had become white, what is the Income Tax Department chasing?

13. Video number 34, 2.35 mins onwards: (Also in Video number 53, 3.30 onwards) :

Dua makes a sensational claim that it was hoped (by whom?), that about Rs 15 lakh crore black money would be recovered via demonetization. Like most of his claims, this has no source, has no backing and no data. However it is very easy to trash this claim because the total cash in circulation was Rs 15.44 lakh crores, and no sane minded person had hoped or expected that almost the entire money i.e. Rs 15 lakh crores would be identified as black money. So is this a deliberate attempt to fix the target so high, to make sure the actual achievement looks like a failure in the face of this imaginary target?

14. Video number 36, 10.50 mins onwards:

Dua says “There is an American fact-tank, like think-tanks, which is named Pew Research Centre. The research of Pew Research Centre, is very respected all over the world, it is considered to be trustworthy, and people use the research extensively”. The same Dua, had belittled Pew Research in video number 152, by questioning its sample size. Why the U Turn? In the 36th video Dua quoted Pew Research as showing that India is the 4th most intolerant nation, and in the 152nd video, Dua was discussing the Pew survey which showed PM Modi as the undisputed, most popular leader in India. Make up you mind Mr Dua.

15. Video number 53, 2.00 onwards:

Dua says, in his 3 year report card of Modi Sarkar, that inflation has fallen. But he attributes it to demonetization, and the fall in demand caused by the shortage of cash. We are not sure when Dua earned his economics degree, but here is a chart of India’s inflation rates from November 2015 till the date of the video.

Inflation can be seen hovering between 5-6% till July 2016. This can be called moderate inflation, as compared to the high inflation periods during UPA regime. From July 2016 to May 2017, there is a steady and continuous fall in the inflation rate, except for the period from roughly December 2016 to March 2017, when it rose marginally. This shows two things: Inflation had begun falling much before demonetization, and immediately after demonetization, inflation rates actually rose for a few months. Dua needs to create a better story.

While we are fully aware the litany of lies and misrepresentations won’t stop, we will try our best to to bust the lies continually being peddled by these videos.

Part 2 will follow soon.

Rahul Gandhi’s attacks about Tata factory at Sanand is example of either big lies or nano brains

0

With the Assembly elections in Gujarat literally just around the corner, it has become a no-holds-barred contest between every political outfit in the state. While I won’t be talking of the ground situation here, I do have some thoughts about a section of Rahul Gandhi’s campaigns – the repeated attacks on the Tata Motors’ manufacturing facility in Sanand in the Ahmedabad district.

The alleged resurgence of Congress’ “perpetual President-in-waiting” off late has been the buzz all around. From his Encylco-Pidi-a to his ability to coin new phrases like Hugplomacy (which by the way sounds hilarious in Hindi), he is the buzz in town, with smart trolls inferring his PR strategy to be akin to that of his Canadian dynastic counterpart.

But on the ground level, nothing seems different at all. Gandhi, is still making vague statements that remind us of his pre-2014 days. But in all this, why he chose to attack Tata Motors has left many bewildered. Perhaps it is to do with the fact that the Parsi community, once a guaranteed Congress votebank has drifted to the BJP? Back in 2014, a Parsi high priest had explicitly asked the community to back Modi.

Getting back to the campaigning in Gujarat, Rahul has used the Sanand factory to attack Modi multiple times.

On 3 November, he said that Rs 33,000 crore was given to the Nano factory but he hadn’t seen a single one on Gujarat streets for the last 10-15 days. He later said that you can’t see it anywhere in India.

The point is, the Sanand factory does not make cars for Gujarat alone. Two, given that the primary demand for Nanos is for the Taxi industry, it would be pertinent to look at other cities such as Bengaluru where Nanos are aplenty on the city’s roads. If he really hasn’t seen a single Nano on India’s roads, it is a disturbing fact for it could mean he needs medical attention.

Another really important question is, is Gandhi lying about the Rs 33,000 crore? The figure just seems to have cropped up recently in the context of the elections, and is most likely a misinterpretation, just like the 15 lakh drama.

On 25 November, he asked a more troubling question. He asked if the children of residents got employed by the factory. The point is, the factory alone is not the sole source of employment. Add to this the fact that Gujaratis are predominantly business oriented, and what do you get? A thriving ‘local economy‘. If a factory comes up, so do other businesses in the vicinity. From a tea stall to a trucking business to vegetable vendors, everything comes up. Different people do different things for a living.

Further, the highway connecting Sanand to Ahmedabad was also upgraded to a four lane highway, which turn means improved connectivity to the town along with a host of other things including highway-side businesses. Fun fact: Motels run by Patels on highways in the United States are called Potels. Within the factory, there are many jobs, from maintenance to basic clerical jobs to high end ones which require skilled engineers. Is Gandhi asking for unskilled workers to make unsafe cars?

The more troubling aspect of this question is: Is Rahul Gandhi batting for child labour or child exploitation? If that is the case, then sorry, I’d never vote for you.

On 26 November, he made an outrageous claim saying that Rs 33,000 crore had turned to ash because the plant was manufacturing just two Nanos in a month, displaying the failure of Make In India as well. In order to seem intellectual, he backed up his claim by citing a Business Standard report. Unfortunately for Gandhi, many of us also read the same report which mentioned a substantial bit of information to prove him wrong.

The report clearly does mention that around 6,200 Tiagos and 2,300 Tigors are manufactured at the same plant. That’s 8,000 cars a month, at the least. Further, last month Tata announced that one lakh Tiagos had been assembled at Sanand. Yes. 1,00,000. A Hundred Thousand Tiagos. Is this a sign of a useless factory?

Further, Sanand was never part of Make In India, for the Make In India scheme came up only post 2014.

What riles any person is the attack on Make In India – which in no way is a Swadeshi manufacturing scheme – but basically a platform to fuel more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Gandhi’s distant relative Tehseen Poonawalla (no relation to Cyrus, Adar or Natasha Poonawalla) mocked the Make In India week in 2016, and that too in a rather disgusting manner. When a stray firework caused a fire at the cultural night, Poonawalla was quick to jump the gun and proclaim that “Modi’s Fake In India” would go up in smoke.

While Rahul Gandhi is certainly not someone to be taken seriously, the itch is that nobody ever questions him. This is my attempt to do the same. Dear Mr Gandhi, do you understand economics, business or anything for that matter?

Twitter users come up with hilarious responses after Ram Guha complains about bad service by IndiGo

0

In recent days Indigo airlines has managed to generate news for the wrong reasons.

A few days ago a shocking video had emerged which showed an Indigo staffer throttling a passenger over a supposed disagreement. As a result the airline was condemned from all quarters, and it has since then apologised for the incidence.

Now it seems that the airline is failing to shrug off the bad press after none other than pop historian cum Nehru fan Ramachandra Guha, took to twitter on Sunday to complain against it:

It was amply clear that the pop historian wasn’t very happy with the airline which as per his claim, has become a serial offender when it comes to being rude.

But rather than showing solidarity with Guha, various twitter users decided to channel their inner comedian by coming up with hilarious responses, some of which also mocked his ideological stance:

Some had a serious take on this issue:

Social media has never been very kind to Ram Guha or his “agenda”.

People had also meted out the same “humorous treatment” when Guha was surprisingly included in the 4 member panel to run BCCI. We had also reported how he was bashed online for playing victim after making unsubstantial allegations against the BJP.

The missing questions from the Media as Gujarat elections approach

0

With the Gujarat assembly elections just around the corner, it is quite evident — from ‘liberal’ point of view — that democracy is under threat due to the possibility that Narendra Modi’s party may win. The mainstream media is indeed right, though the threat to democracy comes from their own behaviour that changes when they feel that Modi’s party could win.

We have been fed with news and opinions about how a strong leader has made India less democratic, with opposition voices being suppressed and media being sold out to the incumbent administration. We are even told that the coalition governments, also referred to as multi-party governments, are the true representation of the country.

Now with Gujarat elections around the corner, we can see again how the media is coming up with a new definition of electoral democracy – of course, in complicit with Congress and its allies.

One of the new anti-Modi poster boys of the media, Jignesh Mevani, asked all parties to withdraw candidates so that BJP is defeated. He said, “Since the ruling BJP is our key enemy, I request aspiring candidates of other parties and independents not to file their papers, so that we can have a direct battle with the BJP”.

We can sure that how this will be spun as Rahul Gandhi’s brilliant strategy of winning over opposition parties. Further, one shouldn’t be surprised, if by any chance Congress wins Gujarat – a virtue will be made out of such announcements. Even after 22 years of BJP rule and thus anti-incumbency, if Congress has to beg independents to not contest elections, one can imagine its political bankruptcy and the abilities of its new leader. Forget asking about this desperate strategy of Congress, how many times has any journalist asked or any media organisation fact-checked Rahul Gandhi over his wild claims and plain lies that he has peddled during campaigning?

Not to be slighted, AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal also has voiced his opinion. His intellectual bankruptcy is well known. He further reinforced that by saying, “Vote Who Can Beat BJP In Gujarat”. A few months ago, AAP was giving bytes of how they will contest all constituencies in Gujarat. The mainstream media lapped it up, by conducting polls to measure Kejriwal’s popularity in the state.

NDTV had reported, “After Delhi Win, Buoyant AAP Plans A Challenge For BJP In Gujarat Polls” – after a AAP win in a by-election in Delhi. NDTV anchor was with Kejriwal and AAP IT cell head at an event recently to talk about elections, but she did not have the integrity to ask Kejriwal about downturn in his fortunes. She was more interested to get anti-Modi comments from Arun Shourie, who too was present at the event, than ask such tough questions to another panelist. With PM Modi starting his campaign only now, expect many more definitions and criteria of democracy that we aren’t aware of.

Prior to every election season, a tragic comedy is seen unfolding in the opposition camp as well as the news studios. Tragic because the self anointed door keepers of democracy and morality act as the unofficial mouthpieces of political parties. They seem to celebrate every proposition that presents itself as a tool to thwart the essence of democracy, because they may not like the outcome. Because every election, we seem to realise that opposition space, has not only shrunk but has become sadly irrelevant. They seem to be so consumed by hatred for the one ‘chaiwalla’ that ended their political hegemony, that often, that hatred transcends the political sphere and manifests itself as hatred for the nation.

Comedy, because it is indeed hilarious to watch them clunk around like headless chicken, specially, post the 2014 elections. Every municipal corporation election becomes a ‘test for Modi’ and Assembly elections become practice matches for the crown prince of Indian politics, Rahul Gandhi. Their bias is so transparent, that their shoddy attempt to cloak it with secularism and ethical questioning becomes laughable.

We know by now that the opposition is bereft of ideas. What we are also fast realising, is that the media is bereft of ethics.
