As Jammu and Kashmir is undergoing polls after nearly a decade, Pakistan has identified its ideological ‘allies’ in the National Conference and Congress alliance. Khawaja Asif, the Defence Minister of Pakistan in an interview with GeoNews said that Pakistan and the NC-Congress alliance are on the same page to reinstate Article 370 which was removed by the Modi government in 2019.
“Pakistan and National Conference-Congress alliance are on the same page in Jammu & Kashmir to restore Article 370 and 35A. Since Modi did this attack (abrogation of Article 370 and 35A) so many Kashmiris were brutally killed,” Khawaja Asif claimed.

Pakistani news anchor Hamid Mir also emphasised how the Congress has openly declared that if voted to power, they will restore Article 370 and 35A. To this, Khawaja Asif suggested that it would be a great ‘relief’ to the people of Kashmir.
Notably, Congress leader Pawan Khera on Monday said that the Congress-National Conference alliance will restore the right of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
“Jammu and Kashmir was a state whose rights were taken away, its statehood was taken away, it was made a Union Territory and it must get back this right. We will get back this right of Jammu and Kashmir. If you look at the track record of Congress in the last ten years, be it Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, wherever we have formed governments we implemented our guarantees. People have faith in us. We have put our entire agenda in front of the public in our manifesto…,” Khera said.
It is pertinent to note that while the Congress party has deemed the abrogation of Article 370 as some sort of snatching of the rights of Kashmiri people, the five-judge Bench of the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the abrogation of Article 370 which gave Jammu and Kashmir a special status. Even as the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the removal of Article 370, the Congress party and its ally National Conference are evidently trying to encash the votes of anti-India Islamist extremists even if that means reducing themselves to Pakistan’s political-ideological ally in India.
As reported earlier, Jammu and Kashmir now have 90 assembly constituencies. The BJP intends to contest the election separately in the polls, while the National Conference (NC) and the Congress have formed an alliance. As per the agreement reached between the parties, NC will compete for 51 seats, Congress will compete for 32 seats, and there will be “friendly contests” in five constituencies. In addition, the CPI(M) in South Kashmir and the Panthers Party in Jammu division have each been allotted one seat.
Notably, while the removal of Article 370 has ushered Jammu and Kashmir into an unprecedented era of development, skyrocketing tourism and increased security, the National Conference has mentioned in its manifesto that they would seek the restoration of Article 370. Moreover, while the BJP-led Central government has adopted a policy of no talks with Pakistan until it stops state-sponsored terrorism against India, NC has advocated for resuming dialogue with the hostile neighbour.
On Monday (16th September), a procession was held at Siddharthnagar, Uttar Pradesh, marking Barawafat. As the procession approached a Hindu temple, the Muslim crowd started screaming the murderous Sar tan se juda slogans. A video of Barawafat procession participants raising slogans like Gustakh-e-Nabi ki Ek Saza and Tan se Sar Juda has gone viral.

In another outrageous incident in Uttar Pradesh, pro-Palestine slogans like “Palestine Zindabad” were raised by bike-riding Muslim youths during the Barawafat procession in Jaunpur’s Macchli Shahar. In Agra, the Pakistani flag was hoisted on a building near Shamsdar Road. A case has been filed in the matter on the complaint of Hindu rights organisations.

Chaluvaraju has alleged that Munirathna threatened him by saying, “What happened to Renukaswamy will happen to you.” He claimed that the MLA had demanded a commission in connection with a contract. According to the contractor, he offered Rs 1 lakh, but Munirathna refused and insisted on the full amount.
The contractor further alleged, “MLA Munirathna has threatened me to pay Rs 20 lakhs. If I don’t pay, he said the same fate as Renukaswamy will happen to me.” He also accused Munirathna’s elder sister’s son of being involved in the murder of Renukaswamy.
An audio clip had also gone viral, allegedly featuring Munirathna using abusive language and threatening a Dalit person, the contractor, and his wife.

On Wednesday, September 18, Chandrababu Naidu alleged that animal fat was used instead of ghee to make laddoos which were served as Prasadam at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirumala during the previous YSR Congress regime and termed it a sacrilege. The incumbent CM of Andhra Pradesh made the startling allegation while addressing an NDA legislative party meeting on Wednesday, September 18.
“They (YSRC government) not only provided substandard food to the devotees, such as Anna Prasadam in Tirumala, but also used inferior quality ingredients to make Prasadam, which is offered to Lord Venkateswara. Instead of using pure ghee, they used animal fat,” the Chief Minister alleged in Telugu.
“Today, we are using pure ghee and cleansed the system in the temple. Quality of Prasadam and food have improved and steps are being taken to make further improvements,” Naidu further explained.

Senior YSRCP leader and former TTD chairman YV Subba Reddy, however, dismissed Naidu’s allegations as “malicious,” accusing the TDP chief of being willing to “stoop to any level for political gain.”
Subba Reddy, who served as TTD chairman for two terms further accused Naidu of damaging the sanctity of Tirumala and the faith of Hindus. “Chandrababu Naidu has committed a grave sin by tarnishing the sanctity of the sacred Tirumala temple and undermining the faith of millions of Hindus. His remarks about the Tirumala Prasadam are extremely vile. No person of human decency would make such statements or accusations. Once again, it has been proven that Chandrababu will stop at nothing for political gain. To restore the faith of devotees, I, along with my family, am ready to take an oath before the deity regarding the Tirumala Prasadam. Is Chandrababu prepared to do the same with his family?” Subba Reddy wrote in a post in Telugu on X.

A day after the terrorist group Hezbollah suffered scores of casualties in a series of pagerexplosions, a second wave of explosions is being reported from all across Lebanon including Beirut, especially from areas that are considered strongholds of the terror organisation. As per global media reports, the latest wave explosions involve Walkie-talkies and handheld radios that were bought along with the pagers which exploded on mass scale yesterday.
As per the latest reports citing the Lebanese Health Ministry, at least 9 persons have died and over 500 are injured in the current wave of blasts. However, the number can go up as more and more blasts are being reported.
Apart from communication devices, other equipment like solar power systems, car radios, iPhones, video cameras, fingerprint locks and other devices have reportedly burst into flames. The explosions caused fires in multiple buildings. Several unconfirmed videos are circulating on social media showing the pandemonium during and after the second wave of explosions involving Walkie-talkies and handheld radios. At least one explosion took place during the funeral of a Hezbollah leader killed in yesterday’s pager explosions.
IT HAPPENED AGAIN: Report of many casualties in explosions on #Hizbullah's #radios in #Beirut and southern Lebanon!
As per the Guardian report, the second wave of explosions across Lebanon mainly targeted Hezbollah’s walkie-talkies. A security source and a witness said that hand-held radios used by the Hezbollah terror group detonated late this afternoon across the country’s south and in the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut. Sources say, “A number of walkie-talkies exploded in Beirut’s southern suburbs.” However, apart from the two-way radios, several other devices also reportedly exploded, including iPhones.
The National News Agency of Lebanon reported that a large number of solar power systems exploded in people’s homes across Lebanon. Images of burnt and damaged solar panels, fingerprint readers and other devices are being shared on social media, but it can’t be confirmed that they exploded like pagers and walkie-talkies were simply near walkie-talkies which blew up. Unconfirmed reports claimed that lithium batteries for solar energy storage had detonated, causing fires in some houses.
Fires broke out in a number of residential apartments, vehicles and a motorcycle, as a result of the explosion of wireless communication devices in Lebanon.

According to Lebanese media, the blasts occurred in Beirut, the Bekaa Valley, and Southern Lebanon, killing three people. According to a Times of Israel report, at least one of the blasts took place near a funeral organised by Iran-backed Hezbollah for those killed the previous day when thousands of pagers used by the group exploded across the country.

Lebanese Civil Defense said that it was operating to extinguish the fires that had broken out following the explosions in some 60 shops and homes, 15 vehicles, motorcycles, and two fingerprint devices. It added that ambulances were transferring the wounded to hospitals throughout the country.
A time-lapse video of the Beirut skyline courtesy of news agency Reuters of Wednesday evening shows plumes of smoke coming out in several locations across the city over a period of time.
A security source told Reuters, “Hundreds of people were wounded in the latest blasts involving communication devices used by Hezbollah.” A senior security source said that the explosions were “small in size”, similar to yesterday’s attacks. According to the Guardian report, pictures showed broken and singed communication devices amid scenes of destruction.
REPORT
Causes of explosions in Lebanon today:
Pagers Walkie-talkie radios Fingerprint machines Solar energy systems
Social media users have identified at least two models of two-way radios involved in the explosions based on photos of the exploded devices, which are ICOM IC-V82 and BAOFENG BF-888S walkie-talkies. These hand-held radios were purchased by Hezbollah five months ago, around the same time that the pagers were bought.
As per Lebanese security sources and other experts, Israel’s spy agency Mossad planted explosives inside pagers imported by Hezbollah months before Tuesday’s detonations. It is likely that the same theory will be presented for the today’s explosions.
It is NOT the same as the image at the top of the thread, so we already have 3 devices, two of which are identified.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported that “old pagers” exploded inside homes in the southern suburbs of Beirut and southern Lebanon.
NNA report added that a number of injured were transferred to hospitals in the capital and in Baalbek, which is in the Bekaa Valley. Two people were injured after a device exploded on a road in the village of Ali al-Nahri in Bekaa. A pager also exploded inside a car near a cemetery in Jdeidet Marjeyoun, in southern Bekaa, the report added.
Reports claim that Israel planted explosives in thousands of pagers bought by Hezbollah, triggering yesterday’s attack. However, Israel has not claimed responsibility for either of the two days’ attacks.
In the meanwhile, Hezbollah has reportedly told its operatives to distance itself from communication devices. It is also being reported that Hezbollah leaders have asked its members to dispose of devices containing lithium battery or any internet connected device.
Amid the mounting pressure on the Congress party over the brazen physical assault and harassment of an Indian journalist in the US, journalists in large numbers staged a protest in New Delhi demanding that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should issue a public apology and take action against the guilty persons. The protesting journalists slammed the Congress party for claiming to run “Mohabbat ki Dukkan” but at the same time “targeting” and “singling out” journalists on one issue or the other be it their caste, views, or for asking tough questions. They also lambasted a section of media fraternity for dividing journalists in the camps of “us vs them” and observing “selective silencing” even on issues of attack on journalists and media.
The protesting journalists included renowned and veteran journalists who held placards with slogans like, “Mohabbat Ki Dukkan, Sikho Patrakaro ka Samman” (Learn how to respect Journalists); “Rahul Gandhi per pucha Sawal, America me kyu hua Bawal?”. (Why the ruckus for asking questions from Rahul Gandhi?)
They also raised slogans like – Rahul Gandhi should apologise, Stop attacks on journalists and media…Tanashahi nhi chalegi (Dictatorship will not work)….Congress party hosh me aoo (Congress party come to your senses).
They asserted that no journalist is big or small as all media persons are just doing their work.
What transpired in Dallas, US?
Last week, a journalist associated with the India Today media network was assaulted by Congress workers in Dallas, Texas during Rahul Gandhi’s US visit. Towards the conclusion of his interaction with Sam Pitroda, Rahul Sharma asked, “Will Rahul Gandhi raise the issue of Hindus being killed in Bangladesh during his meetings with US lawmakers?” It is said that close associates and supporters of Congress and Rahul Gandhi assaulted and manhandled him. They snatched his phone and deleted the entire video of the interview while keeping him captive for several hours. Days after the incident, PM Modi had highlighted the issue and slammed Congress party over the incident. Incidentally, US Press Club also lambasted Congress supporters for attacking a journalist at Rahul Gandhi’s event, calling it a violation of First Amendment rights.
Rahul Gandhi issue a public apology, stop singling out journalists for their caste, or for posing tough questions: What the protesting journalists said
Journalist Vinod Mishra said, “This protest is a message to all those people who divide journalists into the camps of us vs them.”
He stressed that if they keep on dividing journalists like this, attacks on journalists will not stop.
He added, “They sometimes ask caste of a journalist, sometimes their religion, or region they belong to…but journalists are just doing their work.”
“What was the fault of Rahul Sharma..He asked (from Sam Pitroda) when Rahul Gandhi was meeting so many US lawmakers, will he raise the issue of attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh,” he continued.
Journalist Mishra further stated that it should be asked, “Why this became a ‘crime’ in the eyes of Rahul Gandhi’s team? Is it a crime to ask questions for Hindus?”
Speaking with News18, DD News Anchor and veteran Journalist Ashok Srivastav said, “Sam Pitroda has not assured of any action, he issued an apology only after PM Modi raised the issue publicly. His initial response was that I will look into the matter and probe into the allegations. If Sam Pitroda has apologised after conducting a thorough investigation, he should tell us who were the people who detained the journalist for three hours. Who were the people who took the journalist’s phone and deleted everything? The ones who assaulted, manhandled, and ill-treated him, he should reveal their names and take action against them.”
The veteran DD journalist asked, “Is this your (Rahul Gandhi) ‘Mohabbat ki Dukkan’, with respect to media and constitution.”
He added, “These questions should be asked from Rahul Gandhi as he is not above the constitution.”
“In America, where Rahul Gandhi claimed that media is not free in India, his team assaulted a reporter, and Sam Pitroda and Rahul Gandhi watched tamasha. We thought Rahul Gandhi would show magnanimity and apologise for the incident,” Ashok Srivastava added.
DD anchor Lal Chand Singh said, “Our protest aims that Sam Pitroda ji should apologise for the attack on Rahul Sharma in the United States of America. But there has been no response from Congress party, it’s leaders or its handle. We are asking this question not only to the Congress party and its leaders but also with media fraternity. There is a big question mark as to what did they do when such incidents take place on a person from their fraternity. Why do they maintain a selective silence.”
They try to project themselves as champion of freedom of speech, Singh added, so what was wrong that Rahul Sharma had asked?
A female journalist part of the protest said, “Ek bar nhi bar bar, earlier such news were coming from different parts of the country and now from foreign soil. Congress party members, including Rahul Gandhi indulge in incidents where journalists are singled out sometime on their caste, surname and if they don’t like there questions they link them with some party, on one excuse or the other, journalists are being targeted and singled out.”
She added, “The incident that occured in Dallas crossed all limits. That a reporter was held captive by party members, his devices were tampered with, videos were deleted, only for one reason that he wanted to ask one question which Sam Pitroda ji didn’t like. They could have skipped the question or declined to comment but should not have acted in such a manner. This show that you want to send a message to the entire media fraternity.”
She further stated, “Not through telephonic call, Rahul Gandhi should issue a public apology as it happened in his presence when he was in the USA. So far, he has not even taken cognizance of the incident. Sam Pitroda ji is trying to hog wash because Prime mInister raised this matter during an event.”
She concluded by saying, “We want to say Rahul Gandhi, Congres party, Kharge ji don’t be scared, let journalists do their work. This will strenghten democracy.”
On Tuesday, 17th September, a 26-year-old girl working at Ernst & Young (EY), Pune, one of the Big Four accounting companies, died tragically after four months of joining due to what her family described as work-related stress. The deceased girl has been identified as Anna Sebastian Perayil, a young Chartered Accountant (CA) from Kerala. The girl allegedly was burdened with backbreaking work by the authorities which resulted in the deteriorating health of the girl, eventually leading to her death.
Perayil’s mother, Anita Augustine raised the issue by sending an email to Rajiv Memani, the company’s India CEO. In her letter, she accused the firm of “glorifying overwork” and emphasized how the company’s human rights values contradicted the reality her daughter faced.
Perayil passed her CA exams in 2023 and started working at EY Pune in March 2024 as an executive. As it was her first job, she worked tirelessly to meet the expectations, but the effort had a significant impact on her physical, mental, and emotional health. Her mother stated, “She began experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness, and stress soon after joining, but continued to push herself, believing hard work and perseverance were the path to success.”
Her mother stated that because several employees resigned due to the excessive workload, her daughter’s manager instructed her to stick around and change everyone’s opinion about the team. “Her manager would often reschedule meetings during cricket matches and assign her work at the end of the day, adding to her stress. At an office party, a senior leader even joked that she would have a tough time working under her manager, which, unfortunately, became a reality she could not escape,” Augustine added.
Victim’s mother’s letter to EY
She further alleged that her daughter worked late into the night and even on weekends. “Anna confided in us about the overwhelming workload, especially the tasks assigned verbally, beyond the official work. I would tell her not to take on such tasks, but the managers were relentless. She worked late into the night, even on weekends, with no opportunity to catch her breath,” she said.
Augustine described an occasion in which her daughter’s supervisor issued her an assignment at night with a deadline the next morning. She said, “Her assistant manager once called her at night with a task that needed to be completed by the next morning, leaving her with barely any time to rest or recover. When she voiced her concerns, she was met with the dismissive response: ‘You can work at night; that’s what we all do’.”
“Anna would return to her room utterly exhausted, sometimes collapsing on the bed without even changing her clothes, only to be bombarded with messages asking for more reports. She was putting in her best efforts, working very hard to meet the deadlines. She was a fighter to the core, not someone to give up easily. We told her to quit, but she wanted to learn and gain new exposure. However, the overwhelming pressure proved too much even for her,” the letter added.
“Anna was a young professional. Like many in her position, she did not have the experience or the agency to draw boundaries or push back against unreasonable demands. She did not know how to say no. She was trying to prove herself in a new environment, and in doing so, she pushed herself beyond limits. And now, she is no longer with us,” Augustine further expressed.
Augustine emphasized the sharp contrast between the company’s human rights statement and what her daughter experienced. She requested an answer, “How can EY begin to truly live by the values it professes?” The devastated mother stated that her daughter’s death should serve as a “wake-up call” for the company. “It is time to reflect on the work culture within your organization and take meaningful steps to prioritize the health and wellness of your employees,” she said.
Augustine alleged that EY Pune staff did not attend her daughter’s funeral, which she found profoundly distressing. After her funeral, I contacted her managers but received no response. “How can a firm that talks about principles and human rights fail to support one of its employees in their dying moments?” the mother asked.
While the specific reason for her death is unknown, the email stated that Perayil had complained of “chest constriction” many weeks before her death. “We took her to the hospital in Pune. Her ECG was normal, and the cardiologist came to allay our fears, telling us she wasn’t getting enough sleep and was eating very late. He prescribed antacids, which reassured us that it wasn’t anything serious,” she added. The 26-year-old woman died on July 20th.
Netizens raised concern over the issue and slammed the company for imposing work pressure on the employees and not valuing their contribution. “This is so appalling and nasty!!! You work hard & crack one of the toughest exams in the country & then are expected to make huge sacrifices & severe alterations to your lifestyle thereby impacting your health & relationships – all this & no one from your team attends your funeral. Grim,” said one Malavika Rao who posted the letter sent by the deceased’s mother to the EY.

“Work culture in India is horrendous, to say the least. An Indian employee never switches off even after official work hours and that is made the “acceptable” norm. Those who don’t work after the office are made to feel they are without work and are enjoying life. Regular calls after the office, no respite on weekends have seamlessly integrated our work culture,” said Parag Mandpe from Mumbai.

Several others slammed the company and blamed its exhausting work culture.
Chartered Accountants working at Big4s confirm work stress
OpIndia spoke to CA Samruddhi Agarwal from Pune who confirmed that the work culture in the Big4 accounting companies like EY, PWC, Deloitte, etc is horrible, but the worst amongst them is EY. She said that they drain the employees to the core and expect them to work extra for significant results.
“They review people based on their performances and expect them to work even after office hours. People working there are expected to completely forget their personal lives. However, on the other hand, this is a competitive world and stress has unknowingly become part of every working individual. But suicide is not an option. People must prioritise their health in such cases,” she added.
OpIndia also spoke to CA Niel Soni from Mumbai, who has experience working with a Big4 accounting companies during early years of his career. He also confirmed that the work culture at EY is taxing. He said people often suffer a lot of health issues when working with such companies.
“This issue has come to the fore because Anna’s mother emailed the company. Otherwise, there are many such severe cases, if not death of course which go unreported. People run into depression, develop heart diseases and still keep on working as their performances are very strictly reviewed at such companies. If nothing, work culture needs to change,” he said.
It is crucial to note that last year, Infosys founder Narayana Murthy proposed that young Indians should commit to working 70 hours per week as a means to enhance the nation’s productivity. This suggestion of his attracted affirmation and criticism from society. But he did not change his opinion even in the year 2024 January when he said that all that his statement meant was people have to be very productive for the nation’s development.
While this sounds interesting and significant, people prioritizing their mental health in today’s competitive world has become a need. As per the statistics recently released by statista.com, around 11,486 people employed on a salary basis in private companies committed suicide due to work pressure in the year 2022, 2712 ended their lives while working in a public sector company and 2166 government servants committed suicide due to work stress. The numbers are alarming as such incidents continue to happen and have even slightly increased owing to societal pressures or family responsibilities.
4 major cases of suicide due to workload were reported this year
Several stuck in such stressful situations at times think of quitting their jobs, but societal pressures and the financial responsibilities of their respective families force them to continue to earn money at the cost of their mental health. Recently, in February this year, Saurabh Kumar Laddha, a 25-year-old consultant at McKinsey & Company jumped off the ninth floor of his apartment complex in Wadala after feeling pressured due to work.
Laddha, a graduate of IIT Madras and IIM Calcutta, has worked with the strategic consulting business since August 2022. According to reports, the project he was working on was “highly demanding,” with Laddha under a lot of pressure to meet deadlines and deliverables.

In March 2024, two employees at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh committed suicide due to increased workload. Multiple workers’ associations at the centre later confirmed that the staff shortage leading to increased workload had caused heightened workplace stress levels among the deceased employees.
In July 2024, a 36-year-old IT professional, Vishal Pramod Salvi committed suicide by jumping into the riverbed in Bopodi, Pune, after being consistently harassed and humiliated by his manager. Salvi was recently fired from work and was consistently threatened by his work manager over work. He was also being threatened of public humiliation, as a result of which he decided to end his life.
According to the FIR filed in the case, the victim uploaded a picture of his manager on his WhatsApp status before death and stated in a note that the latter was to blame for his suicide. Zeeshan Haider, the manager of an IT company based in Yerwada had then been charged with instigating youth to commit suicide under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code.
Why nearly half of the working employees carry some kind of stress
According to studies, stress levels are rising among working Indians due to increased employment insecurity in a highly disruptive environment, as well as increased concern in personal lives. Increasing stress has resulted in a rise in the number of persons suffering from depression and at high risk of suicide. Employers face a growing issue in dealing with employees who are not only individually depressed but may also have a negative influence on the productivity of their organisations.
According to surveys undertaken by Optum and 1to1help.net, two of the top providers of employee support programs to Indian firms, there has been a considerable increase in the number of workers who are extremely depressed or are at risk of suicide as a result of increased stress. According to the findings of Optum’s most recent poll, nearly half of all employees in India experience some form of stress. The poll was carried out among 800,000 employees from 70 significant organizations, each with a minimum staff of 4,500 in the year 2018.
The most prevalent sources of stress are work, money, and family, according to the studies. This is especially true for middle-level managers with children and loans to repay. Such employees are among the highest paid in their organizations, thus they are concerned that they will be the first to be laid off if the company is restructured. In their personal life, an increasing number of people as a result of this appear to be suffering from relationship problems and broken partnerships or marriages.
Furthermore, social media is increasing peer pressure to conform to a certain lifestyle such as going on a luxurious vacation which contributes to anxiety and leads to stress and depression.
Conclusion
Managing job stress is critical for sustaining mental and physical health, attaining long-term career success, and living a balanced, satisfying life. Individuals who successfully handle stress are more likely to do well over time. This leads to long-term job success because they can face obstacles with perseverance while maintaining a favourable work reputation.
Moreover, people at the individual level need to identify the level of stress that they can handle, and any job beyond that limit should be kept aside. In this competitive era, youngsters under the pressure to prove themselves have forgotten to say ‘no’, especially at their workplaces. It has become a norm that refusing to do a particular job or saying ‘no’ would reflect a rude attitude which somehow might affect the overall performance of an employee, which is never the case. Instead, a new norm needs to be normalized in which the employees can freely talk about the work stress to their managers and get things balanced out, for the betterment of both, the employee and the company. If not, there are always plenty of job options available to be jumped upon. After all, quitting a job is anyway a better option than quitting life!
On Wednesday, 17th September several opposition parties attacked the government over the Union Cabinet’s approval of the One Nation One Election, which aims to hold simultaneous polls for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, calling it a “political stunt” and claiming that the move will become a flop.
The One Nation One Election idea received approval after the report of the high-level committee, led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, was presented to the Union Cabinet earlier today and was accepted by the cabinet.
Congress said that it is opposed to the proposal of ‘One Nation, One Election’ and that elections need to be held as and when required for democracy to survive. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge said that ‘One Nation, One Election’ cannot work in a democracy.
“We don’t stand with this. One Nation One Election cannot work in a democracy. Elections need to be held as and when required if we want our democracy to survive,” he said. Congress leader KC Venugopal also said that the proposal was not practical. “It is not practical in this country. They want to divert attention from present issues,” he said.
AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi has further fiercely criticized the ‘one nation, one election’ idea approved by the Union Cabinet claiming it undermines federalism and jeopardizes democracy. Responding to the Union Cabinet’s decision, the Hyderabad MP stated that he has long opposed ‘one nation, one election’ since it is a solution in search of a problem.
“It destroys federalism and compromises democracy, which are part of the basic structure of the Constitution. Multiple elections are not a problem for anyone except Modi and Shah. Just because they have a compulsive need to campaign in even municipal and local body elections does not mean that we need simultaneous polls,” Asaduddin Owaisi posted on X.
I have consistently opposed #OneNationOneElections because it is a solution in search of a problem. It destroys federalism and compromises democracy, which are part of the basic structure of the constitution.

Derek O’Brien, a senior Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP, slammed the proposal as a ‘jumla’ (empty promise) by the BJP. “One Nation, One Election is just another cheap stunt from the anti-democratic BJP. Why were Maharashtra elections not announced along with elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir? Here’s why. The Maharashtra government announced the Ladki Bahin scheme in the budget this June. The first tranche reached the bank accounts of women in August and the second tranche will reach beneficiaries in October,” he said.
“You can’t do three states in one go and you talk about One Nation One Election. And also tell us, how many constitutional amendments, including curtailing or extending terms of state assemblies, will be done,” he added. The TMC MP also shared a letter by Mamata Banerjee sent to the center in this matter which read that the policy proposed by the dramatic and sensational.
News of a Cabinet decision on One Nation One Election.
Manoj Jha, a Rashtriya Janata Dal leader, and Rajya Sabha MP, stated that simultaneous elections were previously held in India and there was a reason it was stopped. “How will that be changed now? Elections will be held together in Lok Sabha and states… say no government can be formed in a state like Uttar Pradesh or Madhya Pradesh, will there be a proxy government with governor’s rule or President’s rule till the next election or will a fresh election be called for such states. If there is a fresh election, then the link breaks,” Jha said.
He continued, “Most importantly after the BJP was reduced to 240 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, we thought PM Modi would speak about issues related to employment. This is a diversionary tactic, nothing else.”
Samajwadi Party spokesperson Manoj Yadav further pondered what good ‘One Nation, One Election’ would do. “All of BJP’s policies are brought only to financially strengthen their party leaders and business. They have no intention of doing anything for the common people,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the committee headed by former president in preparing the report, saying that his cabinet has accepted the recommendations. PM Modi tweeted, “The Cabinet has accepted the recommendations of the High-Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections. I compliment our former President, Shri Ram Nath Kovind Ji for spearheading this effort and consulting a wide range of stakeholders.”

He added that “This is an important step towards making our democracy even more vibrant and participative.”
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. who briefed the media on decisions of the union cabinet, said the opposition might start feeling internal pressure. “The opposition might start feeling internal pressure (about One Nation One Election) as more than 80 percent of respondents who responded during the consultation process have given their positive support, especially the youth, they are very much in favor of this,” Vaishnaw said.

BJP spokesperson Shazia Ilmi also commented on the issue and said, “We had ‘one nation, one election’ in our manifesto, and talks were held on this earlier also. If you see, elections in 1952, 1957, 1962, and 1967 were conducted in this ‘one nation, one election’ format only. We also know that many governments have been toppled by exploiting Article 56. Other than that, a lot of money is spent on elections and a lot of government officials are employed in the election duties.”

Several other leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy, etc also hailed the move.
The Union Cabinet approved on Wednesday the plan to hold simultaneous elections in the country, as suggested by a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind. The committee had advised that the government implement a one-time temporary measure that would require the Union government to set a date soon following a Lok Sabha election.
The government said that the Report, comprising 18,626 pages, is an outcome of extensive consultations with stakeholders, experts and research work of 191 days, since its constitution on September 2, 2023.
On Wednesday (18th September 2024), the Bombay High Court observed that if the use of loudspeakers and sound systems beyond permissible sound limits was harmful during the Ganesh festival then it was also harmful during the Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi processions.
A two-judge division bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar made these remarks while hearing a bunch of public interest litigations (PILs).
In the PILs, the petitioners had sought a ban on the use of “DJs”, “dance” and “laser lights” during the Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi processions. They urged the bench to issue directions to the civic bodies and police so that they stop granting permission to use such high-decibel sound systems.
The petitioners emphasised that neither the Quran nor the Hadith (holy books) prescribe the use of DJ systems and laser lights for the celebration.
During the proceedings, the bench cited its earlier order passed last month ahead of the Ganesh festival. In its earlier order, the bench emphasised the ban on the use of sound systems and loudspeakers that emit noise levels beyond the permissible limits during festivals. Notably, these permissible limits are specified under the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000.
Appearing for the petitioners, advocate Owais Pechkar requested the court to add Eid as well in its earlier order.
The bench retorted saying that it was not at all required because the order mentioned “public festivals”.
Disposing of the petitions, the court asserted, “If it is harmful for Ganesh Chaturthi, it is harmful for Eid also.”
Meanwhile, regarding the use of laser lights and its purported harm, the two-judge bench asked the petitioners to submit scientific evidence to back their assertion. They sought research work to establish that such lights have harmful effects on humans.
Slamming the pleas for lack of proper research, the bench remarked that before filing such petitions, the petitioners should do proper research. The bench said, “Why didn’t you do your research? How do we adjudicate such an issue unless it is proved scientifically that it causes harm to humans?”
The bench emphasised that the petitions should be helping the courts to give effective directions on their pleas, as they don’t have subject matter expertise on all issues. The bench added, “That’s the problem. Before filing a PIL, you must do basic research. You should assist the court in giving effective direction. We are not experts. We do not know the ‘L’ of laser.”
Incidentally, a similar plea was also heard in the Supreme Court yesterday (on 17th September).
Supreme Court junks the plea
On Tuesday, the apex court refused to entertain a petition that sought directions to regulate the use of light laser beams and loudspeakers in public spaces, gatherings, and events during festivals. The bench comprised CJI DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
The petitioners had approached the top court to challenge an order of the Bombay High Court dated 20th April. The Bombay HC had disposed of the PIL against the use of laser beams and sound systems beyond permissible limits during religious processions and other ceremonies.
Strikingly, the courts have ruled that there is no need to pass substantive directions as it underscored the need for aggrieved persons to file complaints before the authorities. Instead of issuing a blanket ban on sound systems and loudspeakers, the courts maintained that complaints should be filed before the concerned authorities who would then take action as per the established rules on permissible sound limits.
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the development of the Venus Orbiter Mission (VOM), which will be a significant step towards the government’s vision of exploring and studying the planet Venus and extending India’s space mission beyond the Moon and Mars. In addition to this, the Centre has also approved the Chandrayaan 4 mission following the success of the Chandrayaan 3 mission.
An official release said that Venus, the closest planet to Earth and believed to have formed in conditions similar to Earth, offers a unique opportunity to understand how planetary environments can evolve very differently. The ‘Venus Orbiter Mission’ to be accomplished by the Department of Space is envisaged to orbit a scientific spacecraft in the orbit of planet Venus for a better understanding of the Venusian surface and subsurface, atmospheric processes and influence of the Sun on the Venusian atmosphere.

The PM Modi-led government has earmarked ₹2,104 crore for the same. Further, a schedule of 36 months has been set for the mission completion. The Chandrayaan 4 mission will achieve the foundational technologies and capabilities eventually for an Indian landing on the moon (planned by the year 2040) and return safely back to Earth.
Major technologies that are required for docking/undocking, landing, safe return to earth and also accomplish lunar sample collection and analysis would be demonstrated.
The Central Government has outlined an expanded vision for the Indian space programme during the Amrit Kaal that envisages an Indian Space Station (Bharatiya Antariksh Station) by 2035 and an Indian Landing on the Moon by 2040. To realise this vision, a series of Gaganyaan and Chandrayaan follow-on missions are envisaged including the development of associated space transportation and infrastructure capabilities.
The successful demonstration of the safe and smooth landing of the Chandrayaan-3 Lander on the Lunar Surface has developed critical technologies and proven capabilities that only a few nations have. The perfect follow-up to the successful landing mission is the demonstration of the capacity to collect lunar samples and safely return them to Earth. ISRO will be responsible for spacecraft development and launch. The project would be effectively managed and monitored under ISRO’s established practices. The mission is scheduled to be completed within 36 months of approval.
As per the official press release, the total fund requirement for the technology demonstration mission “Chandrayaan 4” is ₹ 2,104.06 Crore. The cost includes spacecraft development and realization, two launch vehicle missions of LVM3, external deep space network support and conducting special tests for design validation, finally leading to the mission of landing on the moon’s surface and safe return to Earth along with the collected lunar sample. The mission would enable India to be self-sufficient in critical foundational technologies for manned missions, lunar sample return and scientific analysis of Lunar samples.
