MP: Muslim youths raise ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogans in response to ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ slogans at Independence Day program in Vidisha

In the Vidisha district of Madhya Pradesh, several Muslim youths raised “Pakistan Zindabad” slogans on Independence Day (15th August). The Muslim accused youths raised pro-Pakistan and religious slogans during the Independence Day celebrations at Lateri tehsil headquarters.

As the video of the incident went viral on social media, local BJP leaders sent a memorandum to the municipal inspector. The police have also apprehended a student in this case. BJP leader Sanjay Jain stated that an Independence Day program was held on Thursday at the district campus.

As the program ended, some students raised Bharat Mata Ki Jai slogans, while Muslim students raised Pakistan Zindabad slogans and an altercation ensued. The police apprehended one of the students on the spot, while the others fled. The BJP and Bajrang Dal have demanded that the rest of the students who raised pro-Pakistan slogans be arrested.

Meanwhile, SDOP Ajay Mishra said that a minor has been taken into custody and efforts are being undertaken to arrest more people by filing a case based on the complaints received.

Ongoing ethnic cleansing in Bangladesh: How a Hindu woman was gang-raped after a mob of 35 broke into her house, her family returned only after ‘assurance’ by Jamaat

A 35-year-old Hindu woman was gang-raped in Tala upazila in the Satkhira district of Bangladesh soon after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister of the country.

According to a report by Kalbela, the incident took place on 5th August this year. The victim, who is a housewife by occupation, narrated that a mob of 30-35 men broke into her house at 7 pm and carried out vandalism.

The accused damaged doors and windows and took away a tin box, which contained cash, gold and necessary documents. Armed with sharp weapons, they took the woman behind a cowshed and coerced her into silence.

Mob involved in gang rape yet to be identified

The men then took turns to rape her. The victim could not identify her perpetrators since their faces were covered. At that time, her husband was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Khulna.

On learning about the incident of rape, he left the area and took the family away. The victim, her husband and children returned only on Tuesday (13th August) on the ‘assurance’ of local Jamaat leaders Dr Kamal and Ebadul.

The victim’s husband said that they have not been able to ascertain the identity of the rapists so far.

Police claim to have no idea

The officer-in-charge of Tala police station, Mominul Islam, claimed that the police have not been informed about the rape case.

He said that ‘necessary action’ would be taken after talking to the victim’s family and getting information about their name and address.

While speaking about the matter, Magura UP Chairman Ganesh Debnath remarked, “I have heard from the victims’ families and the neighbours. I will not be able to help unless the political situation is normal. So I am requesting journalists to stand by the victim’s family.”

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh

On 9th August, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad released a report detailing 205 instances of attacks on minority community members especially Hindus in the country’s 52 districts following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure on 5th August, reported The Daily Star.

The council made the statement in an open letter to Nobel laureate Economist Muhammad Yunus, who took the oath of office as the interim government’s chief adviser on 8th August. The letter was unveiled at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) Nasrul Hamid Auditorium.

“We have preliminarily learned that at least 205 incidents of minority persecution have occurred in 52 districts so far. We seek protection because our lives are in a disastrous state. We are staying up at night guarding our homes and temples. I have never seen such incidents in my life. We demand that the government restore communal harmony in the country,” conveyed Nirmal Rosario, the organisation’s president.

In Satkhaira, minority shops were looted in Kolaroa, the house of Biswajit Sadhu, president of the District Unity Council was attacked, looted and burnt and the house of Dr Subrata Ghosh, central assistant organizational secretary of the Unity Council, was attacked and burnt.

Kolkata Police forces young lady doctor to delete tweets against RG Kar rape and murder, asks her to visit police station, other netizens get notices

The Kolkata Police has started doing what it does best – trying to suppress voices from raising questions on the horrific rape and murder case of a doctor from the RG Kar Hospital. In the wee hours of the morning on the 16th of August 2024, a young doctor who has been raising her voice against the horrific rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital posted that the Kolkata Police had visited her house, asked her to delete some tweets about the case and also, visit the police station the next day.

The young doctor, who posts from the X handle @epicnephrin_e, took to X to post about her ordeal.

She wrote that at about 7:30 PM on the 15th of August, the Kolkata Police started asking for her location in her neighborhood. The neighbors called the young doctor’s mother informing her that 3-4 uniformed police officers were looking for her, claiming that they needed to summon the young doctor for her posts on X.

She wrote, “They eventually reached my place and my brother and sister in law were present. My brother called me and put me on speaker. ‘Did you post about a student of Burdwan university?’ ‘Yes,I did.’ ‘Did you verify the credibility of the post?’ ‘I did see articles of media houses about the same but I blatantly believed an angle I saw spreading in people’s statuses(that it was related to the ‘Claim the night’ protest). I edited it under the post after verification.’ ‘Please delete the post and don’t further post information without verifying and report to the Town thana tomorrow’”.

In her X post, the young doctor informed that her brother folded his hands and pleaded with the police, telling them about how much she had been affected by the horrific rape and murder of a fellow doctor. Her mother was, she says, crying inconsolably.

The young doctor has been posting about the RG Kar rape and murder case for the past few days and demanding justice for her fellow doctor, who was subjected to horrific brutality.

On 14th August itself, a TMC supporter had openly threatened the young doctor saying that she would ensure the police came after her.

She had also tweeted about the threats from TMC goons that she was receiving, claiming that the police would act against her.

After the threats, only hours before Kolkata police showed up at her door, she had posted a Tweet where she apologized for her posts. There were several responses to her tweet which expressed concern over the doctor being threatened and intimidated by TMC supporters and the Kolkata Police.

While this young doctor had Kolkata Police knocking at her door, there were others who got notices from the Kolkata Police in a bid to silence them on X.

Shefali Vaidya, an author and commentator took to X to write about the notice she had received from the Kolkata Police.

“So I got this threatening letter from @KolkataPolice for merely asking a few questions and for exercising my right of free speech. This is a clear case of @MamataOfficial administration silencing the voice of private citizens using the power of Kolkata Police. I am just a private citizen who is so disgusted by what happened to #Moumita_Debnath that I decided to speak up. But apparently, @KolkataPolice does NOT like independent voices that speak up. As a woman and as a mother, I fear for my safety. We all know what Kolkata Police can do, and we all know what happens to women who dare to speak against @MamataOfficial in West Bengal”, Shefali wrote.

Another X user also posted about the intimidatory notice she received for merely demanding justice for the doctor raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital.

The horrific murder and rape of a young doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital has sparked outrage across the country. Thousands of doctors have taken to the streets to demand justice for the doctor who was subject to horrific brutality inside the hospital premises. As thousands of people took to the streets of Kolkata on the 14th of August demanding justice, a mob attacked the RG Kar Hospitals with the police being mute spectators and some of them hiding in the bathrooms. They told the doctors that they were responsible for their own protection. After the mob violence, which many speculated was aimed towards erasing evidence, Mamata Banerjee blamed the Left and ‘Ram’ for the mob violence at RG Kar.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Kolkata Police had blamed ‘social media’ for the people losing their faith in them and claimed that they had done everything they possibly could to ensure that the RG Kar victim gets justice.

Since blaming the Left, BJP and social media did not stop people from questioning the TMC government, Mamata Banerjee, and the police, Kolkata police had started threatening those reporting on the case with legal action.

In their desperation to defend the TMC government and themselves, Kolkata Police had also taken to Twitter to respond to 4 questions posed by a netizen about their investigation and conduct in the case.

Interestingly, while they responded to questions 1 and 2, they refused to respond to questions 3 and 4 – which was why Sandip Ghosh was reinstated by the state and why did the Kolkata Police allow renovation work to start at the RG Kar Hospital while the rape and murder case was still under investigation.

It is pertinent to note that Dr Sandip Ghosh resigned from the post of principal of  RG Kar Medical College and Hospital amid massive protests over the rape and murder. But he was immediately appointed as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH) on the same day. The Calcutta High Court strongly objected to this and ordered him to submit his resignation and go on leave. Notably, it is alleged that Dr Sandip Ghosh has close ties with the TMC.

The rape and murder of a 32-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital

The 32-year-old trainee doctor who was raped and killed at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was brutally tortured before she was suffocated to death, according to the postmortem report. The four-page report stated that she had been strangled and that “perverted sexuality” and “genital torture” had resulted in a serious wound in her private parts.

Her thyroid cartilage was also shattered. A source stated that the rape and murder occurred on 9th August most likely between 3 and 5 am. Her lips, fingers, left leg, and abdomen were all covered with injuries.

According to sources, her head was slammed against a wall or the floor resulting in severe injuries and her mouth and nose were squeezed shut to stop the victim from shouting. The accused had reportedly beaten her up as she attempted to defend herself and resist. He then raped and killed her. According to the autopsy, the girl’s hands and face had cuts on them. Shards of glass from her spectacles broke and got into her eyes following an intense blow. The initial postmortem report ruled out suicide and stated that the trainee doctor had been sexually assaulted before being murdered. Later, sexual assault was confirmed in the autopsy report. A civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy was arrested in this case and has reportedly confessed to his crime. The case was handed over to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.

RG Kar rape and murder case: Indian Medical Association announces 24-hour strike across the country

0

A nationwide withdrawal of services has been announced by doctors of modern medicine starting from 6 am on Saturday, August 17 to 6 am Sunday, August 18, per the official statement released by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Thursday.

Notably, the strike has been called by IMA amid the ongoing protest in Kolkata over the rape-murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

In its official statement, IMA stated that routine OPDs and elective surgeries will not take place during those 24 hours; however, other essential services will be maintained.

“All essential services will be maintained. Casualties will be manned. Routine OPDs will not function and elective surgeries will not be conducted. The withdrawal is across all the sectors wherever modern medicine doctors are providing service. IMA requires the sympathy of the nation with the just cause of its doctors,” the release stated.

The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) also announced a protest against the incident at Azad Maidan in Mumbai on August 16.

“To voice our protest against these acts, we (BMC MARD, IMA, IMA JDN, ASMI) are organising a peaceful protest at Azad Maidan, Mumbai, on 16th August 2024 at 1 pm. We urge our fellow medical colleagues, doctors, medical students, resident doctors, senior doctors and other associations to join us in this protest against the injustice,” MARD stated in a press release.

Meanwhile, people from the Bengali film and television industry have also joined hands with protesting doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, which led to nationwide strikes and protests by the medical fraternity.

The incident triggered massive protests. On Wednesday, the protest ground and the hospital campus at RG Kar were vandalised by a mob, forcing the security personnel to disperse the crowd.

Calling civil code ‘communal’ is not an insult to Ambedkar, it is an attack on appeasement from Nehru to Rahul Gandhi: Read why PM Modi said there is a need for UCC

Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly advocated for a uniform civil code from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day. After hoisting the flag, PM Modi declared that the nation now wants the establishment of a secular civil code. He added that the demand has also been consistently supported by the Supreme Court. The statement was made in the presence of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud. Prime Minister Modi pointed out that at present there is a communal civil code that discriminates between people and a large section of the country believes the same.

He mentioned that laws that divide the country on a communal basis and promote inequality have no place in modern society and added that there is a need to adopt a secular civil code to bridge this gap. “I would say that it is the need of the hour that there be a secular civil code in the country. We have spent 75 years in the communal civil code. Now, we will have to move towards the secular code. Only then would we be free of discrimination based on religion. This will also eliminate the sense of alienation among the common people,” the prime minister conveyed.

Why did PM Modi mention UCC?

The main focus of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is the Uniform Civil Code. It’s an important part of their electoral manifesto. All the prominent leaders of the party including Prime Minister Narendra Modi have talked about fulfilling this promise. Uttarakhand’s BJP government has also implemented UCC in the state after PM Modi’s directive. This would ensure that all religions will be subject to the same laws regarding non-criminal civil concerns involving marriage, property and inheritance, among others. Notably, UCC was not part of the BJP manifesto before 1989. However, it was on the agenda of the Jana Sangh, which existed before the BJP’s foundation in 1980.

BJP initially mentioned the Uniform Civil Code in its 1989 manifesto after the Supreme Court’s 1986 Shah Bano judgment was reversed by the Rajiv Gandhi administration which stated that a commission would be appointed to examine the various personal laws prevalent in the country including Muslim law, Christian law and Parsi law to identify fair and equitable elements in these laws so a draft could be prepared with the aim of developing a consensus for Uniform Civil Code. There is a continuous debate on making a law on this basis by the central government and enacting it across the country. Ministers of the BJP administration have also advocated it from time to time. Now PM Modi has announced UCC from the Red Fort.

Protest of Congress led-opposition

The Congress has begun to complain against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement. His remark, according to veteran Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, is an affront to Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, the man who drafted the Indian Constitution. “The non-biological PM’s capacity for malice, mischief, and maligning of history knows no bounds. It was on full display today from the Red Fort. To say that we have had a ‘communal civil code’ till now is a gross insult to Dr Ambedkar, who was the greatest champion of reforms in Hindu personal laws that became a reality by the mid-1950s. These reforms had been bitterly opposed by the (RSS Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) and Jan Sangh,” he wrote on X (previously Twitter).

On the other hand, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera alleged, “He takes oath on the Constitution and then calls the rules written by Babasaheb Ambedkar communal. He in a way speaks against Atal Bihari Vajpayee and says that terrorist attacks took place during the tenure of previous governments. We want to know what steps he has taken to ensure the safety of Bangladeshi Hindus?”

What is the Uniform Civil Code?

If the Uniform Civil Code is understood in simple terms, then it is a law that applies to every community in the country irrespective of religion, caste or community. There shall be a single law for every individual. The British slapped criminal and revenue laws on everyone through the Indian Penal Code 1860, Indian Evidence Act 1872, Indian Contract Act 1872, Specific Relief Act 1877 and others but left issues related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, property and other matters to the religious groups according to their own beliefs. The laws issued under the religious practices of Hindus were repealed and the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, the Hindu Succession Act 1956, the Hindu Minority and Guardianship Act 1956 and the Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act 1956 were enforced through Hindu Code Bill.

However, the personal law of Muslims was maintained which prolonged the controversy. As a result, in the matters of Muslim accused or prosecutors in the courts, the Quran and Islamic verses and traditions are cited during the hearing. Muslims vehemently oppose the demand for UCC for all religions. Muslims argue that their law is based on the Quran and Hadiths and they will abide by it and resist any modifications. The primary reason for the dispute is that these personal laws allow Muslim men to take four wives. The Uniform Civil Code has also been openly rejected by the Muslim Personal Law Board.

The Constitution and Dr. Ambedkar regarding UCC

According to PM Modi, the country should have a single set of laws. The Uniform Civil Code has also received a lot of support from the Supreme Court. Nonetheless, the Supreme Court and the BJP government’s endorsement of the Uniform Civil Code is compliant with the Constitution. The incorporation of the Uniform Civil Code is expressly stated in the Constitution. Despite this, the Congress party keeps visiting the issue due to the politics of appeasement. The Congress claimed that PM Modi’s remarks were an affront to Dr Ambedkar and the Constitution but this is not true.

The Directive Principles of State Policy are described in Articles 36 to 51 in Part 4 of the Indian Constitution, which came into force on 26 January 1950. These Directive Principles are called the basic spirit of the Fundamental Rights and UCC is described as mandatory in Article 44 which reads, “India shall endeavour to implement a Uniform Civil Code for the citizens throughout the country.” It is important to note that the Directive Principles of State Policy in Article 37 and Article 44 of the Constitution, though unenforceable in the court of law, are still fundamental in the governance of the country and it is the duty of the country (India) to implement these principles by forming laws.

75 years ago, Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar clarified that the Uniform Civil Code could not be made “purely voluntary” in light of the fears and apprehensions of the minority community. Today, the Congress party is contending that PM Modi’s rhetoric about executing UCC from the Red Fort today is a disrespect to Dr Ambedkar, which is utterly false.

Pandit Nehru opposed the Uniform Civil Code

Jawaharlal Nehru, the prime minister of India, disregarded the discussion on the Uniform Civil Code during the debate on the Hindu Code in Parliament. He previously stated that Muslims are not yet prepared for the Uniform Civil Code, hence the time is not suitable for it. He had framed the entire matter in terms of Muslim demands rather than national interest. He, while defending the Hindu Code Bill instead of the UCC in Parliament, conveyed, “I do not think that the time has come to implement it in India at present. When more than 80% of the country’s population has been brought under personal law through the Hindu Code Bill, then there is no justification for implementing the Uniform Civil Code for all citizens in India.”

Muslim appeasement of Congress

After independence, when a large population of Muslims remained in India, Congress started to use it as its vote bank. Socialist leader JP Kripalani charged Pandit Nehru’s Congress government with being communal during the 1954 Hindu Code Bill discussion. He asserted that laws are solely being introduced by this government for Hindus and not for Muslims. India’s first and then President Dr Rajendra Prasad was fiercely against the Hindu Bill. He conveyed that these laws are being passed arbitrarily and unilaterally without considering the views of the general public. Furthermore, he threatened to not sign the legislation which led to a clash between him and Pandit Nehru, who was Prime Minister at the time.

Moreover, the then Congress headed by Rajiv Gandhi had drawn a new line of Muslim appeasement by overturning the Supreme Court’s decision in the Shah Bano case. The 59-year-old woman was given triple talaq by her husband Mohammad Ahmed Khan and she with her 5 children were left to fend for themselves. The case made its way from lower courts to the Supreme Court. On 23rd April 1985, Shah Bano’s husband was compelled to pay alimony to his wife and children by the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, which overturned the Muslim Personal Law Board’s decision. Mohammad Ahmed Khan was ordered by the Supreme Court to pay Rs 179.20 each month.

Additionally, the Supreme Court’s Constitution bench had appealed to the central government to further the “Uniform Civil Code” movement. Fundamentalist Muslims protested the same. Rajiv Gandhi’s administration reversed the Supreme Court’s verdict to appease them. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act 1986 was passed by the government in the House. Due to this step of the government, the lives of Muslim women remained as terrible as before. When Shahbano was divorced at the age of 59, she was left to live with her five children without a penny. There was no hope left for any Muslim woman in such a circumstance. On the other hand, the Modi administration eliminated triple talaq and is moving toward UCC.

Muslim Personal Law is ‘Communal Civil Code’

A segment which identifies itself as secular and upholds the Constitution seeks to refute the intent behind the Uniform Civil Code of the Constitution. It believes that Pandit Nehru was correct when he created the Muslim Personal Code and the Hindu Code for other religions. However, two different sets of rules in a nation can never be considered correct, particularly if they are diametrically opposite to each other. For instance, the age of marriage of girls belonging to Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh and other communities has been fixed at 18 years.

A rape case will be filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POSCO) Act against anyone who forms a physical relationship with a girl from these religions with her consent, even a day before she comes of age. On the other hand, Muslim Personal Law talks about the Nikah (Islamic wedding) of a 15-year-old girl.

Four marriages among Muslims: Muslim Personal Law, also known as Sharia Law, is based on the Islamic book Quran and Hadiths. According to the Quran, Muslims are permitted to get married four times. Muslims view these four Nikahs as legitimate. The general law of India stipulates that a person can only get married once. Second marriage can be allowed, under special circumstances.

Divorce and alimony: Muslim Personal Law allows women to be granted triple talaq. Nevertheless, the Modi administration outlawed it in 2019. However, it is not common for Muslims to award alimony to the woman they divorce. They merely return a very small amount of Mahr (bride wealth obligation, in the form of money, possessions or teaching of verses from the Quran by the groom, to the bride at the time of the Islamic Wedding) while a husband is required by Indian divorce law to provide his wife with alimony or a specific sum of payment.

Custody of child after divorce: According to Hindu law, in case of divorce of parents, custody of the child is determined under the Hindu Minority and Guardianship Act 1956. At the time of divorce, if the child is less than 5 years old, he will be handed over to his mother but if the kid is above 9 years old, he can tell the court whether he wants to stay with his mother or his father. Custody will go to one of the parents. On the other hand, under Muslim Sharia law, the custody of the child is with the mother till the child is 7 years old and if she is unable to support or nurture him, then she can give the custody to his father. Meanwhile, there is no rule regarding custody among Christians.

Rights of daughters in property: Females in India have equal rights to the properties of their fathers and husbands under the country’s general civil law. However, in Muslim personal law, women do not receive the same privileges. Women are entitled to half of a man’s portion of ancestral property under Sharia Law and therefore not seen as equal stockholders. However, a Muslim woman has no ownership rights over the possessions of her in-laws. Her only rights are related to the Mehr she receives during her marriage, the gifts she obtains and the money she is given by her father. Sharia law limits her rights to these properties in the event of a divorce. The husband is free to grant her wishes if he so decides.

Inheritance Law: An adopted son has the same rights as a biological son concerning the property of his parents under the Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act of 1956. However, in Sharia Law, this isn’t the case. In Islam, adopted children are not entitled to property. A fatwa had also been issued in this respect by Darul Uloom Deoband. Deoband had stated that an adopted child’s rights would differ from those of a biological child due to Sharia Law. He will not get any rights in the property, nor will he be able to inherit anything. It also points out that a child does not automatically acquire the rights of a legitimate kid just because they are adopted. He will have to follow Sharia Law after he’s grown.

According to Sharia law, an adopted child can be given a hiba (the transfer of the possession of the property, movable and immovable, from one person to the other willingly and without any reward), but cannot be made an heir. Islam states that the adoption of a child raises the issue of ‘mahram’ (a family member with whom marriage would be considered permanently unlawful). The Muslim Personal Law Board had also told the court that Islamic law does not consider an adopted child equal to a biological one. Furthermore, a Muslim can only leave a third of their property to someone else under Sharia Law and the remaining property will have to be divided according to it. Sharia Law makes no allowance for leaving all of the property to a boy or female. Fathers like C Shukkur are left with options like the Special Marriage Act in such a predicament.

Personal law is against the Constitution

Personal law is against the Indian Constitution. According to Article 14 of the Constitution, all citizens of the country are equal. Article 15 prohibits discrimination based on caste, religion, language, region and place of birth. Article 16 provides equal opportunities to all. Article 19 gives the right to study, live, settle and work anywhere in the country. Similarly, Article 21 gives everyone the right to live a life with respect. Article 25 guarantees the freedom to practice one’s faith, but not to practice irreligion. It offers permission to observe customs, but only appropriate ones. It grants liberty to observe customs, but not the bad ones. This ensures that the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the nation won’t violate the Constitution in any way.

Providing patronage to a particular section in the country and making separate arrangements for it is not only an insult to the Constitution, but it also promotes communalism. On the basis of Muslim Personal Law, a very private organization like the Muslim Personal Law Board gets the desired work done by putting pressure on the government. If the law becomes uniform in the country, then the promotion of communalism will be curbed.

“Don’t expect anything from me”: RG Kar Hospital’s new Principal loses her cool

0

After an unidentified mob vandalised the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Suhrita Pal, the newly appointed Principal of the Medical College in Kolkata lost her cool and urged the people to trust her.

Protesting doctors mounted pressure on the newly appointed principal, Suhrita Pal to take action against the midnight mob attack and fulfil the demands of the medical students and doctors.

‘Conspiracy of Ram and Bam to create unrest’: Mamata Banerjee accuses BJP and Left of orchestrating mob attack on RG Kar Medical College Hospital

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the Left is in connivance with the Ram (the Bharatiya Janata party) to create unrest in West Bengal.

“Left and Ram want to create unrest in Bengal and they both have come together to do this,” She said while referring to the vandalism at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday.

The Bengal chief minister said that the mob were not connected to the student movement and alleged that “they are BJP people” who created a ruckus inside the emergency ward of the hospital.

“The people who vandalised RG Kar Hospital yesterday and created this ruckus are not connected to the student movement of RG Kar Medical College, they are outsiders, I have seen as many videos, I have three videos as I can see, in which some people are holding national flags, they are BJP people, and some are DYFI are holding white and red flags,” CM Banerjee said.

On Wednesday night, a mob entered the RG Kar Hospital campus, causing damage to the protest site, vehicles, and public property. Security officials were forced to intervene to disperse the crowd.

Banerjee also praised the police for their restraint during the incident, stating, “Yesterday, police were attacked; among them was one Deputy Commissioner (DC) who was there for security purposes, and two Officer-in-charges (OCs). For one hour, they couldn’t be found, and when they were found, they were unconscious and were seen blood oozing out from their heads. I informed the police at 3 am and had them taken to Apollo Hospital… I would like to congratulate them that they did not lose patience, they did not hurt anyone.”

“Now the case is not in our hands, it is in the hands of CBI, if you have something to say, then tell CBI, we have no objection…,” Banerjee added.

Speaking on the RK Kar rape and murder case Mamata Banerjee said that the only punishment for this crime is the death penalty.

She added that if the culprit is hanged then only people will learn a lesson from it but no innocent should be punished.

“This is a very big crime, and the only punishment for it is that the accused should be hung, if the culprit is hanged then only people will learn a lesson from it but no innocent should be punished,” West Bengal CM said.

Deploy Central Forces at RG Kar Hospital: BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari asks Union Home Secretary after violent mob ran riot at the hospital

On Thursday, August 15, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari requested Union Home Secretary to deploy central forces at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. Notably, RG Kar Hospital was where a young Doctor was brutally raped and murdered last week. Suvendu Adhikari’s plea for deployment of central forces came after a mob vandalised hospital premises and disrupted the protests asking for justice in the case.

In a letter to the Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Suvendu Adhikari claimed that goons sent by the ruling Trinamool Congress government attacked the hospital to destroy evidence of last week’s rape and murder of the trainee doctor at the hospital. He also expressed deep concern over the integrity of the investigation and the safety of the protesting doctors.

Suvendu Adhikari wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “The WB Govt & @KolkataPolice have turned RG Kar Medical College and Hospital into a stinky quagmire by firstly allowing culprits to establish their fiefdom of crime and now allowing TMC goons to stomp upon the whole premises to destroy evidence.”

Suvendu Adhikari added, “Such was their perversity that the unruly mob tried to break into the Girls’ Hostel at midnight when the Policemen took refuge inside the toilets.”

He further said, “I have written to the Hon’ble Home Secretary; Ministry of Home Affairs; Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Hon’ble Director, Central Bureau of Investigation, regarding the vandalism that took place at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital and requested them to deploy Central Armed Paramilitary Forces to prevent further destruction of evidence at R G Kar.”

Mob attack on RG Kar Hospital

Notably, on intervening night of 14th-15th August, a mob of 50-odd men laid siege at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The goons carried out attacks against the protesting doctors demanding justice for the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor.

In videos that have now surfaced on social media, the mob was seen vandalising the hospital premises, damaging police vehicles and physically attacking doctors present there.

The development occurred within hours of protestors hitting the streets in West Bengal to ‘reclaim the night’ and make public spaces safe for women.

The mob carried out vandalism at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital without hesitation despite a significant police presence at the facility. The attackers were also involved in stone pelting.

ULFA(I) claims to have planted bombs in Kamrup Metro, Kamrup Rural, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Tamulpur, Tinsukia, and Golaghat districts.

Police checked these places, and while they found some devices, nothing was found in the other places mentioned. After receiving the information about the planting of bombs by ULFA (I), security forces in Assam have substantially intensified surveillance Police in Guwahati have blocked many vital roadways, including several places in Guwahati like Zoo Road, the Ulubari-Rajgarh linking road, Dispur, and Narangi etc.

DGP GP Singh said that two devices were found at two places in Guwahati after an extensive search, but they were not active bombs. He said that the suspicious items had some circuits and batteries, but lack any ignition device. “The substance inside is being sent for forensic/chemical examination,” he posted on X.

Police officials in Guwahati, Nagaon, Lakhimpur and Sivasagar said that they have found bomb-like material in some places including Panbazar and Gandhi Basti in Guwahati. Notably, of the 24 locations listed by ULFA (I), eight are in Guwahati including an open field at Last Gate in Dispur, which is close to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s official residence.

CM urges ULFA(I) to not hamper development and investment

Reacting to the letter by ULFA(I), CM Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed to the banned outfit led by Paresh Baruah to not do anything that disrupts the environment of development that has emerged in the state after several decades. Mentioning the semiconductor plant being set up by Tata Group in Assam, he said, “I would urge ULFA Commander-in-Chief Paresh Barua not to create an environment in Assam that destroys the investment environment.”

He further said, “there are around 14 lakh unemployed youths in the state, if industry come, our youths will have to go to work as security guards in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh. If the youth of Assam is not in Assam, with whom will we develop and liberate Assam? That will make no sense. Therefore, I hope that we will not do anything bad in Assam that will make investors rethink, that will malign the name of Assam outside the state”.

He reiterated his invitation for talks to the anti-talk faction of ULFA, and urged them to not do anything that would put a stop to the development of the state.
