VoePass Airline Plane with 62 aboard crashes in Brazil, all presumed dead

A passenger plane carrying 62 people crashed on the outskirts of Sao Paulo on Friday, CNN reported, quoting Brazil’s Civil Defence. The plane also struck several houses, according to CNN.

Flightradar24 data, according to CNN, showed that the Voepass plane departed from Cascavel and was en route to Sao Paulo. Shortly after, it lost signal around 1:30 pm local time.

Flight 2283 was carrying 58 passengers and four crew members at the time of the crash, the airline said in a statement, as reported by CNN.

“There is still no confirmation of how the accident occurred or the current situation of the people on board,” the statement read.

The Brazilian airline confirmed that a plane carrying 62 people crashed in Vinhedo, near the city of Sao Paulo, Al Jazeera reported.

In a statement on Friday, the airline said it had no information about the fate of those on board, but Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said it appears that all passengers are presumed to be dead, without offering further details, as reported by Al Jazeera.

“Very sad news,” he said in a social media post. “All my solidarity to the families and friends of the victims,” Al Jazeera reported.

Videos of the crash circulating on social media show the plane spiraling out of the sky and crashing to the ground.

Further details are awaited.

Large crowd of Bangladeshis gather at Indo-Bangladesh border amidst the ongoing attacks on Hindus in the country, seek to enter India

On Monday, August 5, Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister of Bangladesh ending her 15 years in power. Following her resignation, the country has descended into chaos with widespread attacks on the minority Hindu community by the Islamists. Following the large scale violence, several Bangladeshis have been trying to find safe refuge in neighbouring India.

In the last couple of days, several visuals have come up showing Bangladeshis gathering at the Indo-Bangladesh border in a bid to enter India and escape the violence back home. People can be seen standing in a rivulet as they seek to enter their neighbouring country.

BSF prevented a large group of Bangladeshi nationals from entering India at the Cooch Behar border between the two countries in the state of West Bengal. People were seen gathering at the Pathantuli border in Sitalkuchi in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district. However, the Guwahati Frontier of the Border Security Force (BSF) successfully thwarted their attempt to enter India on a large scale.

A local from Pathantuli, Ikramul Haque, said, “Around 9-9.30 AM, a few people from Bangladesh gathered at the border and tried to infiltrate into India.” He added that many are still hanging around there.

The BSF, coordinating with the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), ensured that these Bangladeshis were stopped from entering India and taken back. Attempting to enter India, the Bangladeshis had assembled about 400 meters from the fence in a rivulet in Bangladesh’s Lalmonirhat district.

A senior BSF official said, “The Bangladeshis had gathered at the border, but none were able to enter the country as the border was completely sealed. They were later taken back by the BGB into their own country.”

‘No provision of creamy layer in SC-ST reservations in Babasaheb’s constitution’: Ashwini Vaishnaw after Union Cabinet meeting

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Friday that there is no provision for creamy layer in SCs and STs reservation in the Constitution drafted by BR Ambedkar, and the NDA government is bound to follow that Constitution.

The Union Minister’s remarks came days after the Supreme Court ruled that states have the power to sub-classify Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). The top court had also observed that states can evolve a policy for identifying the creamy layer, even from the SCs and STs to exclude them from the benefit of affirmative action.

Prior to this, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, held a detailed discussion on the Supreme Court judgment regarding the sub-categorization of reservations for SCs and STs as outlined in the Constitution.

“Recently, the Supreme Court delivered a judgment regarding the reservation and a suggestion regarding SC and ST reservations. Today, the Cabinet had a detailed discussion on this matter. The NDA government is bound to follow the Constitution prepared by Baba Saheb Ambedkar. According to Ambedkar’s Constitution, there is no provision for a creamy layer within SC and ST reservations,” Vaishnaw said while addressing a conference.

Further discussing farmers’ issues, Vaishnaw announced a major decision to improve their income through the Clean Plant Program. “Horticulture can provide a significant income source for farmers. One major problem has been viruses in plants, which reduced productivity. To address this, nine institutions will be transformed into clean plant centers, and 75 nurseries will be established for clean mother planting material replication,” he said.

Vaishnaw also highlighted the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana as a transformative scheme. “In the last 10 years, 4 crore houses have been built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, resulting in significant social transformation. A detailed discussion has taken place regarding the construction of 3 crore additional houses, it was one of PM Modi’s early promises. The budget provision for this will be Rs 3,60,000 crore. Of these 3 crore houses, 2 crore will be built in rural areas and 1 crore in urban areas.”

Additionally, the Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Modi, approved eight major railway projects that will cover aspirational and tribal districts.

While briefing on the Cabinet decisions, Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the new railway projects are expected to reduce around 767 crore kilograms of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to planting 30 crore trees.

Paris Olympics: Aman Sehrawat wins bronze medal in Men’s Wrestling beating Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz

0

Indian grappler Aman Sehrawat beat Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz to clinch the bronze medal in the 57 kg freestyle wrestling event at the ongoing Paris Olympics on Friday.

The 21-year-old Indian wrestler clinched a 13-5 victory over Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz to clinch the bronze medal. Aman brought India’s first wrestling medal at the Paris 2024 in his debut Olympic Games.

Aman Sehrawat becomes the 7th Indian wrestler to medal at the Olympics.

The Puerto Rican started with a dominating move by getting hold of Aman’s single leg and taking him out of the blue zone to win the first point.

However, Aman made a comeback and targeted Darian Toi’s shoulders to put him outside the blue zone to get two points.

Darian Toi got hold of Aman’s legs, winning two points and taking the lead.

After the end of the first three minutes of the game, Aman once again took the lead in the bronze medal bout.

With only 37 seconds remaining in the match, Aman won two more points and had the chance to clinch a victory with technical superiority.

In the end, Darian tried to make a desperate move but conceded another point.

After 2008, this is India’s first medal in a wrestling event.

Earlier in the semi-final, Aman lost against Japan’s Rei Higuchi.

The Indian grappler was ousted by the Japanese completely in the bout, and within a blink of an eye, the match concluded. Higuchi moved into the gold medal match with a 10-0 win by technical superiority. Following the defeat, Aman still has a shot at the bronze medal.

Aman stormed into the semi-finals to have a chance of competing for the medal with a technical superiority 12-0 win over Albania’s Zelimkhan Abakanov.

He got his first point in the bout due to passivity from the Albanian wrestler. He went on to complete a takedown to take a 3-0 lead in the first period.

In the second period, he outplayed Abakanov with his remarkable skillset to storm into the final four.

Earlier on Thursday, Aman defeated former European champion Vladimir Egorov by a technical superiority 10-0 win in the first round to reach the quarter-finals.

Assam: Muslim youth arrested in Hailakandi for talking about Bangladesh-like violence to change regime in India, claiming links to Al-Qaeda in Pakistan

A youth from Hailakandi in Assam has been arrested for claiming to be associated with Al-Qaeda and threatening Bangladesh-like violence in India including Assam to change the govt. Rezuwan Ulla Mazarbhuiya had posted on Facebook that after Bangladesh, it is the turn of India, adding that the effect of Bangladesh will start in Assam very soon.

When one Facebook user asked where he is from, Rezuwan replied in Bengali that while he works in India, but he is working with Al Qaeda. ‘My work is in India but always we are working with Al Qaeda organization in Pakistan, I keep Bangladesh in my heart Bangladesh and always keep Bangladesh close. Because Bangladesh is the main reason for our friendship,’ he replied.

Rezuwan was arrested him from his residence in Rangpur in Haliakandi district in Southern Assam after Social Media Monitoring Cell of the Hailakandi Police noticed the Facebook post. He was rigorously interrogated at the Lala Police Station over his claims of links with Al Qaeda in Pakistan. Reportedly, he claimed during the questioning that he has connections with the Al-Qaeda operatives in Pakistan.

The police said that Rezuwan had shared the post on a Facebook group called “Amader Hailakandi”. He also posted a similar message on his personal profile. “He has been arrested after evidence was found against him,” Samir Daptar Barua, Addl SP (Crime), Hailakandi said, adding that he will be produced in the court on Friday.

The ASP added that he has been arrested under Sections 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), 147 (waging war against the government of India), and 196 (Promoting enmity) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita, 2023 (BNS) along with Section 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA).

However, the youth from Hailakandi is on the only to have such views. Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina govt in Bangladesh after the anti-reservation protests were hijacked by Islamist groups like Jamaat-e-Islami, many opposition leaders and Islamists are dreaming of similar violence in India to overthrow the BJP govt centre and from states where it is in power.

Several Congress leaders have made comments hoping for similar ‘revolt’ in India. Congress leaders Salman Khurshid, Mani Shankar Aiyer, and others have said that situation in India is similar to Bangladesh, and therefore a similar violence movement to remove the govt can start anytime soon.

205 incidents of persecution of Hindus and other minorities since August 5: Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist council

On 9th August, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad released a report detailing 205 instances of attacks on minority community members especially Hindus in the country’s 52 districts following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure on 5th August, reported The Daily Star. The council made the statement in an open letter to Nobel laureate Economist Muhammad Yunus, who took the oath of office as the interim government’s chief adviser on 8th August. The letter was unveiled at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) Nasrul Hamid Auditorium.

“We have preliminarily learned that at least 205 incidents of minority persecution have occurred in 52 districts so far. We seek protection because our lives are in a disastrous state. We are staying up at night guarding our homes and temples. I have never seen such incidents in my life. We demand that the government restore communal harmony in the country,” conveyed Nirmal Rosario, the organisation’s president.

The open letter welcomed Yunus as the head of a new era ushered in by the significant student and public movement seeking reform and an egalitarian society. Nevertheless, the triumph was tarnished by a specific group’s extraordinary brutality against minorities, according to the organization which expressed deep sadness and concern over the persecution of minorities. Many Hindu temples have been set on fire and thousands of families have gone without food, per media accounts and information collected by the organisation.

Murders have occurred in multiple locations, and many women have been victims of assault. During this time, other minorities have also endured suffering. Minorities in Bangladesh are experiencing extreme dread, anxiety and uncertainty as a result of the ongoing communal violence that began on the 5th of August. The letter further stated that this turmoil has drawn international condemnation. The letter stressed, “We demand an immediate end to this situation.”

Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad President Basudev Dhar and Oikya Parishad General Secretary Rana Dasgupta both signed the letter. The omission of religious scriptures other than the Quran from the swearing-in ceremony of the interim administration drew criticism.

“The exclusion of readings from other religious texts contradicts our constitution, the spirit of the Liberation War, and anti-discrimination values. We hope that readings from all major religious texts will be included in future state functions. One does not leave their home, temple, or Tulsi tree unless compelled. Many Hindu community members are now taking refuge in others’ homes. I, too, am forced to stay at a friend’s house,” voiced Council Presidium member Kajal Devnath.

He added, “Those involved in persecuting minorities must be brought to justice. If a minority individual is attacked for political reasons, it is still unacceptable. Anyone who commits a crime should be judged, but burning homes and looting will not lead to justice.” Subrata Choudhury, another member of the praesidium pointed out, “We have heard many talk about ending minority persecution, but we have not seen any effective measures. Our national heritage and assets are being destroyed, which is unacceptable to us.” Praesidium members Ranjan Karmakar and Basudev Dhar were also present, as was Professor Nimchand Bhoumik, one of the organization’s presidents.

UK Police clamps down on freedom of speech amid riots after Labour govt came to power, starts arresting people for social media posts and reposts

The Labour Party-led British government is cracking down on those who share social media posts about the UK riots that it believes are “likely to incite racial hatred.”

In a blatant clamp down on freedom of speech, a 55-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with a social media post containing alleged false information about the identification of the suspect in the Southport murders.

The arrested woman is from near Chester and was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of distributing written content intended to incite ‘racial hatred’ and false communications.

“We have all seen the violent disorder that has taken place across the UK over the past week, much of which has been fuelled by malicious and inaccurate communications online. It’s a stark reminder of the dangers of posting information on social media platforms without checking the accuracy. It also acts as a warning that we are all accountable for our actions, whether that be online or in person,” Chief Superintendent Alison Ross said.

In a thread on X, the Crown Prosecution Police boasted that they had booked 149 people since the Southport riots erupted. Other than violent disorder, people have been booked for publishing material to stir up “racial hatred”.

Speaking to SkyNews, the director of public prosecutions of England and Wales, Stephen Parkinson warned the people against “publishing or distributing material which is insulting or abusive which is intended to or likely to stir racial hatred.”

“So, if you retweet that, then you’re republishing that and then potentially you’re committing that offense. We do have dedicated police officers who are scouring social media. Their job is to look for this material, and then follow up with identification, arrests, and so forth. So it’s very, very serious. People might think they’re not doing anything harmful. They are. And the consequences will be visited upon them,” Parkinson said.

Similarly, a 39-year-old Lancashire man was arrested on suspicion of publishing content on social media to urge people to engage in violence, said Merseyside Police.

The accused from Rufford, Ormskirk, was arrested on accusations of inciting or helping the commission of an indictable offence while suspecting one or more would be committed. On the 30th of July, he was arrested in Southport on charges of engaging in violent disorder.

In another such case, 28-year-old Jordan Parlour was charged with inciting racial hatred on social media. Another man was arrested in Birmingham for allegedly inciting racial hatred over social media.

Recently, American billionaire Elon Musk also expressed shock over the UK Police arresting people over social media posts. “Arrested for making comments on Facebook! Is this Britain or the Soviet Union?” Musk asked.

The riots erupted in the UK after three young girls ages 6, 7 and 9 were killed in a stabbing incident at a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga class in northwestern England on on 29th July. Two of the girls lost their lives on the day of the incident while the third girl died the next day. Eight children and two adults were hospitalised after the attack. A 17-year-old suspect Axel Rudakabuna was arrested by the police for murder and attempted murder.

Notably, the UK Police is acting much like the Canadian Police to crush freedom of speech. In June this year, the police arrested Tommy Robinson, a British activist and critic of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, from Calgary in Alberta province of Canada. The British activist had dubbed the Liberal Party leader as ‘commie’ who is triggered by democracy. On 10th June, he tweeted, “The far left are running riot in France tonight because the people chose right, and now Trudeau just dropped a video about his “concerns” that the people of Europe chose right. All these people aren’t even pretending not to be commies anymore. They’re triggered by democracy.”

In January this year,  a journalist named David Menzies was arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on dubious charges of ‘assault’ after he asked tough questions to the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada Chrystia Freeland.

In May this year, OpIndia reported how the Canadian government introduced Bill C-63, known as the Online Harms Bill which included several sections overreaching and potentially causing harm to freedom of speech

Sonia Gandhi’s NAC member Jean Dreze among those detained for pro-Palestine protest in Delhi

The Delhi Police personnel on Friday detained pro-Palestine protesters for creating a stir on the streets of the national capital. Among those arrested include ‘economist’ Jean Dreze and Communist Party of India leader Annie Raja for demonstrating at the APJ Abdul Kalam crossing in Delhi.

The police force snatched banners and placards carried by troublemakers protesting in New Delhi for a war precipitated after Palestinians from the Gaza Strip perpetrated the October 7 terror attacks in the bordering villages with Israel, which launched a ground offensive to eradicate Hamas, a terror outfit controlling the Gaza Strip autocratically since 2007.

The protest, organised by the collective ‘Indians for Palestine’, started from the Khan Market area and was marching towards the Israeli embassy, demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

It is worth noting that Dreze was a member of the National Advisory Council (NAC) during the UPA era. He has often been caught lying and inflaming public sentiments against the Modi government. Ahead of Lok Sabha elections 2024, Jean Dreze had claimed that “under the wave of authoritarianism” and “suppression of Opposition voices” by the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), the Lok Sabha elections commencing on the 19th of April were “as good as rigged”.

The protesters wanted India to end all ties with Israel for its decision to retaliate against the October 7 terror attacks by Hamas, which left 1,300 dead and hundreds of others captive at the hands of their tormenters. The protesters made no demand on Hamas to return the held captives, many of whom are kept in abject conditions in the vast labyrinth of tunnels under the Gaza Strip.

Other demands included stopping the sale of military equipment and ammunition to Israel by public and private players that the Israeli Defence Forces might be using against the Hamas terrorists still active in Gaza. Urging a boycott of companies and organisations that supported Israel in defending its territorial integrity against an outfit that has vowed to destroy the Jewish nation was made by the protesters.

Woman doctor found dead in Kolkata’s govt medical college, BJP launches protest alleging police trying to show murder as suicide

On Friday, 9th August, the BJP in West Bengal launched a massive protest demanding justice for a woman doctor who was found dead in a government college under mysterious circumstances. BJP’s Amit Malviya alleged that the woman had been raped and murdered and further alleged that the Mamata Banerjee-led government was trying to cover up the crime by showing it as a suicide.

“A woman doctor, in a leading Govt hospital in Kolkata, raped and murdered. Her naked body was found from the duty room. Mamata Banerjee Govt is trying to hide the crime. Kolkata Police has been asked to cover up and show it as suicide. Media is not being allowed in. Repeat: no woman, from Sandeshkhali to Chopra, is safe in West Bengal,” he said.

“Mamata Banerjee’s administration is using Kolkata Police to hush up the matter despite hospital authorities confirming trauma injury marks. How long will Bengal turn a blind eye to crimes against women?” he added.

The incident is said to have happened on the third floor of the emergency building of RG Kar Medical College in West Bengal’s Kolkata on Friday morning. The victim who was a second-year postgraduate student of RG Kar Medical College, was found dead inside the Seminar Hall on the 3rd floor of the campus.

As per the police, the woman had gone to the third-floor seminar hall to have dinner.

The hospital has constituted an 11-member inquiry committee for this particular incident. On the other side, a group of younger doctors has said that they will not work due to the hospital’s general lack of security. The doctors have further begun protesting claiming that only the emergency ward of the hospital should be open.

Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, spoke to the victim’s parents on Friday. The victim’s mother claimed that she called her last night and when she stated that she was fine. The mother added that she believes this is murder.

“She was semi-naked and had injury marks; her spectacles were shattered; she has been murdered,” the victim’s mother remarked.

Several BJP leaders have gathered around the hospital along with the protesting doctors to seek justice for the victim. They allege that the TMC government is trying to hide the rape incident and has allegedly ordered the police to show it as a suicide case.

Further probe in this case is underway.
