On 23rd September, a Delhi court sought a response from Delhi Police on a plea seeking registration of an FIR against Dalit student-activist Nishu Azad and her father, Sanjay Azad, over objectionable social media posts concerning Hindu deities.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Mridul Gupta directed the police to file an action taken report in the matter. The case will next be heard in January 2027.

The plea was filed by advocate Amita Sachdeva, who had earlier approached Delhi Police with a complaint against Nishu Azad and her father. The complaint refers to four social media posts uploaded between September 2023 and August 2026. The posts are said to contain references to Bhagwan Shiva, Bhagwan Krishna, Maa Saraswati and Maa Durga.
Sachdeva has said that the posts were deliberately published and continued to remain accessible even after she asked for them to be removed. She has sought registration of an FIR under Sections 299 and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.
Advocate says posts were not removed
The complaint came after Sachdeva said she came across older posts from Nishu Azad’s X account. Speaking to ANI, she said that one post used the word “Vaishya” in reference to Maa Durga and that another mocked Maa Saraswati.
“Yesterday I came across some tweets posted by her on ‘X’. They were old tweets. She used the word Vaishya [prostitute] for goddess Maa Durga; she mocked goddess Saraswati,” Sachdeva said.
She added that she had asked Azad to remove the posts before approaching the police. “So I gave her time till 1 pm (on Saturday), but they didn’t do that. Neither she nor her father. Then I was constrained to file the complaint, which I did,” she said.
Nishu Azad has a track record of hurling abuses against Hinduism and Hindu deities
The complaint has brought renewed attention to several earlier posts and statements attributed to Nishu Azad. There are several posts in which she questioned or criticised Hindu beliefs and deities.
In a November 2024 post, declaring Hindu Gods as ‘imaginary’, Nishu Azad wrote“Brahmins insulted the female gender in the name of Hindu Vedic religion, saying that the Dalit bride was sent to a Savarna house on the first night after marriage for her disrobing; Savarna people raped a Dalit pregnant girl. #हिंदू_भगवान_काल्पनिक_है .”
In another video, she suggested that Savitribai Phule should be considered a goddess of knowledge instead of Maa Saraswati.
Azad has also previously questioned the existence of Hindu deities. In one post, she wrote, “Sir @grok ji, Ram, Hanuman, and Krishna, are all these fictional, or is there any evidence of their existence? If there is any evidence of them, please share it.”
The matter is expected to come up again in January 2027.
