Truck drivers travelling through Jharkhand-Bengal border routes said highways were often filled with unauthorised “nakas” where money was collected from commercial vehicles.

Upon assuming power in Bengal, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari made the security of the India-Bangladesh border a top priority in his very first cabinet decisions.

In order to properly administer the legislation it has passed, Parliament may create more courts under Article 247. CM Adhikari announced on 11th May 2026, that the process of handing over the required land to BSF, with over 90% already identified, would be completed within 45 days. The BJP government in West Bengal aims to enable the BSF to erect fencing and secure vulnerable stretches presently exploited by Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators.

The front page of the Calcutta edition of the newspaper published on 5th May dominated BJP’s Bengal victory, with a large front in saffron colour “BJP’s Bengal” with an illustration of the iconic Howrah Bridge worked into the lettering. Below it is the headline “Saffron tsunami sets aside TMC”.

In a major political surprise, Adhikari snapped ties with the TMC and joined the BJP ahead of the 2021 state assembly elections.
