The action came just hours after the Delhi High Court dismissed UNI’s plea challenging the cancellation of its land allotment. Soon after, the property was sealed by authorities, triggering a wider debate over press freedom and government action.
The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to take back possession of a government bungalow occupied by former CJI DY Chandrachud. The stay exceeded the allowed post-retirement period, despite previous extensions granted under special circumstances.
Bharatiya Janata Party occupies only one bungalow, that is, 14, Pandit Pant Marg. It was allotted to the party in 1999. The BJP was occupying 11, Ashoka Road, which served as the party’s headquarters. However, it was vacated by the party and is currently allotted to BJP MP from Odisha, Baijayant Panda.
The 2-member committee's report stated that the Delhi Waqf Board had been given the opportunity to present its case but had not done so within the prescribed time.
Notices have been issued to Foreign Correspondents' Club (FCC) and Indian Women Press Corps (IWPC) by the Directorate of Estates under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to vacate the bungalows allocated to them.
