Atiq Ahmad and his brother were shot dead by three gunmen who pretended to be journalists on Saturday night as the accused were being led by police officers to a medical college in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, for a medical checkup.

Atiq Ahmed was granted bail in all cases, which included threatening witnesses in the Pal murder case and those related to land-grabbing, except the one slapped against him under the Gangsters’ Act.

Atiq Ahmed who was shot dead along with his brother Ashraf Ahmed on April 15 was a dreaded criminal and had at least 100 FIRs in his name.

Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed were buried in Kasari Masari cemetery of Prayagraj, Atiq’s wife Shaista Parveen was speculated to be present, but she didn't arrive

According to the FIR, the accused persons said that they could not escape after shooting Atiq and Ashraf dead as they failed to anticipate the police cordon

The shooters who shot dead Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed had posed as journalists to kill him in Prayagraj on April 15.

"I will be killed in an encounter by either police or someone from my own criminal clan," Atiq Ahmed spoke about his inevitable death in 2004.
