Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on Mamata Banerjee government on Thursday and said West Bengal needs freedom from "politics of violence, appeasement, riots and corruption" and that the people are looking towards "BJP's development model".
The police, alongside the Rapid Action Force (RAF,) were equipped with tear gas vehicles in advance to quell democratic protests against the Mamata government.
The victims narrated chilling testimonials of murder, attacks on Hindu temples and homes and the role played by mosques in supervising the violence. They also highlighted the inaction of the local police, and the complicity of TMC councillors in the violence.
"We are writing this from a hidden location, not only fearing the threats of the ruling party but also the police who are continually threatening us," the wife and daughter-in-law of Haragobindo Das said.
Earlier, an online complaint was filed by an RTI activist named Jayanta Das, in which he accused Ramakrishna Das Mahapatra of removing the wood without taking permission from the temple administration.
