Pune: FIR filed against Shiv Sena leader Raghunath Kuchik for rape and forced abortion

On February 17, Thursday, an FIR has been registered against Shiv Sena leader Raghunath Kuchik for sexual exploitation, cheating and criminal intimidation of a woman.

The FIR has been registered in Shivajinagar Police Station in Pune. The minister has been charged under IPC sections 376 (punishment for rape) and 313 (causing miscarriage without woman’s consent). The FIR was registered after the police received a complaint of rape and forceful abortion last night.

Indian Express reported that Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has also been included in the FIR filed against the Shiv Sena leader.

Kuchik’s profile on Twitter describes him as the Deputy Leader of Shiv Sena, General Secretary of Bharatiya Kamgar Sena (Shiv Sena backed trade union) and Chairman of the Minimum Wages Advisory Committee (MWAC) of the State Government, which is a position equivalent to Minister of State rank.

According to local newspapers, the complainant told the police that Kuchik promised to marry her and coaxed her into a sexual relationship. After she became pregnant, the Shiv Sena leader forced her to undergo an abortion. He allegedly threatened her with dire circumstances if she did not comply with his orders.

The 24-year-old victim further claimed that between November 6, 2020, and February 10, 2022, the Shiv Sena leader took her to expensive hotels in areas like Pune and Goa and had sex with her under the false pretext of marriage. Raghunath Kuchik threatened to kill the victim if she did not have the child aborted once she became pregnant, as per the complaint.

The victim approached the Shivajinagar Police Station with a complaint against the Shiv Sena leader on Wednesday, February 16. Based on her complaint the police filed an FIR.

Indian Express quoted senior inspector Anita More as saying, “He (Kuchik) has been booked on the charges of raping the woman on the false promise of marriage and later terminating her pregnancy against her consent.”

“The teams are being dispatched for his arrest,” More reportedly added when questioned whether Kuchik will be placed under arrest.

However, when OpIndia attempted to contact the Shivajinagar police station for additional information on the incident, the officials declined to speak.

‘Everyone can wear what they want, but must abide by dress code at places that have the rule’: Yogi Adityanath on the hijab row

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath has asserted his stand on the ongoing Karnataka hijab row. In an interview with India Today TV on 17th February 2022, he said, “No woman wears hijab by choice. Yes, everyone has the freedom to wear as per his choice, but the places having uniform dress codes must abide by the discipline.”

The Karnataka hijab row had an impact on the Uttar Pradesh election campaigns when AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi had said that a day will come when a hijab-wearing lady will lead this country. Replying to this jibe, Yogi Adityanath had recently said in an interview that those who dream of Gajwa-e-Hind must understand that it will never happen till the doomsday and India will follow the constitution, not the sharia law.

In the latest interview with India Today TV, Yogi Adityanath was asked about this. In response to the question, he said “No woman wears hijab by choice. Did the women accept the custom of triple talaq by choice? At least ask those girls about the pains they are going through. I had organized a get-together of the victims of the triple talaq. I had met with them. I have seen the tears in the eyes of those women and their parents and siblings.”

He further said “When those women were sharing their painful experience from the dais, their parents and siblings and other relatives sitting in front were shading tears. There was a woman from Jaunpur. She was a victim of the triple talaq. She had come there to thank the government. She thanked PM Modi for setting the women free from this bad custom of the triple talaq. Later, when I asked if anyone else wants to share his or her thoughts, two more girls shared their experience. These girls were younger sisters of that victim woman and they had not married looking at the hardships faced by their elder sister in her married life. Does any daughter support this bad tradition of the triple talaq?”

Putting forth his view on the current hijab row, Yogi Adityanath further said, “Personal choices of attire can be limited up to their homes, personal works in public places, like while going into market places, etc. I wear this attire in my residence as well as in my workplace, but I don’t force it on my officials. I never ask my office staff to wear this. Should I ask everyone in my office to wear Bhagwa? Do I ask every member of my party to do so? I can’t ask them to do so. Everyone must have the freedom to wear as per their choice. And if it is an institute, it must have its own discipline to abide by. If a policeman argues that I belong to a certain caste or religion and therefore why must I wear the uniform; your forces are finished.”

When asked about the Gajwa-e-Hind remark, Yogi Adityanath said “We are not afraid. Because everyone in the state knows very well that any rioter will think ten times before committing such a crime as he knows for sure, what consequences he would face in case he attempts any riotous crime. Posters will be displayed on every circle on the road. On the third day, notice for seizure will be out. Everything earned and accumulated by his ancestors will be seized for once and all.”

He further added, “The government will then teach the rioter very well how a riot is executed. People in the state know that this is possible only in the double-engine government. Now the question remains, what do you tell to those who dream of a Talibani rule here, those who make riots a normal in the state, those who keep half of the population deprived of their basic rights? There can be only one answer to such people that their dream of Gajwa-e-Hind will not realize till doomsday. India will follow the constitution and not the sharia law.”

The US, NATO label Russian claim of withdrawing troop from Ukraine border as false, say more troops added instead

0

On Wednesday, the United States and NATO have refused to accept the Russian claims of moving troops away from the border with Ukraine and said that Russia can invade Ukraine at any point in time. “Window of Russian invasion still remains open”, said White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.

Not taking the Russian claims of de-escalation at face value, the US official added that there has always been a difference between what Russia says and what it does. “In recent days, Russia has added 7000 extra troops to the border. Now around 150000 troops remain amassed in a threatening way at the border”, she said.

This is a day after Russia announced the end of the military drill near the Ukraine border in the Crimea peninsula and released a video of a train carrying military equipment across the Crimean Bridge. It declared that its military troops had begun returning back to their bases. Earlier in the day, Russia also mocked western media outlets for creating tensions in the entire world by speculating the dates of war between Russia and Ukraine.

The US in its statement reiterated that Russia had raised false flags by announcing de-escalation. It called the video posted by Russia fake and said that everyone should keep their eyes open. “We are seeking verifiable reduction of troops. We will know when we actually see it”, she added. When asked about the cyberattack in Ukraine that took down the govt websites, Psaki said that the US would continue the diplomacy as it was not immediately clear who was responsible.

Ukraine’s Defence Ministry, two national banks and armed forces faced a major cyberattack on Wednesday that disrupted the working of majorly important govt websites. “Russian responses to US security concerns have not yet been received but still we’ll continue the diplomacy”, she affirmed.

NATO’s secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg also said that there is no evidence of de-escalation and that Russia is increasing the number of troops at the border. He added that threat from Russia had become a new normal. Jens Stoltenberg further described it as the most serious security crisis in Europe since the end of the Cold War.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky backed NATO and informed BBC that no troop withdrawal was seen. As Ukraine marked the day of unity on Wednesday, President Zelensky declared the patriotic holiday in response to US intelligence reports that Russia could attack Ukraine on the same day.

Russia has constantly been saying that it had no intentions to invade Russia. Though Russia and Ukraine have deep cultural and historic ties, and both are a part of the former Soviet Union, Russia has asked in writing from the West to cease its expansion towards the east and never allow Ukraine to join NATO as it sees the union as a threat.

MoS Rajeev Chandrasekhar calls for a ‘New Digital Law’ to replace the outdated IT Act 2000

0

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, has on Wednesday called for a “new digital law” to replace the 20-year-old “outdated” Information Technology Act of 2000. Speaking at Nasscom’s annual event India Leadership Forum 2022, Chandrashekhar said, “a new digital law that takes into account aspects like citizens’ right to privacy, is needed to keep pace with the time.”

He also stated that the planned new digital law would serve as a model for future internet jurisprudence.

He was referencing the Data Protection Bill, which has been stuck in limbo for three years. He also mentioned that the bill may take longer to form because the administration does not want to rush it.

PM Modi has advised the ministry to have as much consultation as possible and the bill is being referred to the ministry. Chandrashekhar added, “We will continue this conversation for a little bit longer in my opinion. I don’t want to rush into something and then go back with more amendments. The world needs to get a signal that India’s cyberspace is safe, trusted, open and accountable and most importantly very predictable in terms of what the jurisprudence around it is.”

According to him, India is the world’s most connected market. “Even if you include China, we are still one of the world’s largest markets and one of the most connected democracies. We have much to teach the rest of the world about how to manage digitalisation, boost digital adoption, inclusiveness, and access for everyone, while also ensuring that the internet is secure, trustworthy, open, and responsible,” he stated

The Joint Parliamentary Committee had eventually tabled its long-awaited report on the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019, in December 2021.

“Any new law should not be rigid and too focused on the present. Rather, it should be flexible and open to wide interpretation, given the evolving nature of the technology space,” Chandrasekhar added, with a word of caution.

He also stated that the new rules should not place an undue burden on startups and that the restrictions should be flexible.

Chandrasekhar also took aim at social media behemoths, calling for a concerted international effort to hold companies like Facebook and Google accountable.

He was quoted by Financial Express as saying, “If we are to bring some sanity and some consistency in the way big tech platforms should be accountable to communities and society at large, countries will have to come together and cooperate. Often this attempt to regulate or even to create some sort of sanity and rules and accountability is spun as a challenge to free speech.”

He also added, “While digitising our democracy is important, keeping our democracy safe and ensuring technology is deployed in a trusted manner and in an accountable manner is equally important.”

India bans 54 more Chinese apps, total reaches to 321

The minister’s statement over data privacy comes on the heels of the Center’s recent decision to ban 54 more Chinese-made apps and games.

On February 14, the government of India issued an order to ban another 54 mobile apps linked to China under the emergency provision envisaged in Section 69(A) of the IT Act. As per reports, the Ministry of Home Affairs had sent a request to the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to block the apps.

On June 29, 2020, the central government had announced a ban on 59 Chinese apps, including the very popular short-video app TikTok. Later on August 10, another set of 47 apps was banned that were either related to or clones of the previously banned apps. On September 1, 2020, another 118 apps were blocked, followed by 43 apps on November 19, making it a total of 267 apps. Tiktok and PubG were the most popular apps that were banned by the Government of India for their links to China.

After 4 months of resistance, Pakistan finally allows humanitarian aid from India to reach Afghanistan, 50,000 tons of wheat to be transported soon

0

After an initial reluctance of four months, Pakistan has now permitted Indian humanitarian aid to reach Afghanistan through its territory. This came after Pakistan changed its initial policy to disallow goods to Afghanistan passing through its soil, and has further gone to appeal to the world to help the Afghan people.

According to the development, the Indian food relief of 50,000 tons of wheat will now reach Afghanistan through Pakistani land. Afghan trucks will run on the Pak-Afghan border from Torkham to Wagha on the Pakistan border with India, will go to Attari to load the wheat and return to Afghanistan with the materials. The recent policy will thus enable Afghans to collect Indian humanitarian aid amidst the deepening economic crisis and food shortages.

However, due to limited transportation capacity, only sixty trucks can run in a day to collect such a large amount of wheat. Therefore, it will take a month to transport 50,000 tonnes of wheat from India to Afghanistan. Considering the logistical challenge ahead, Afghan forces will soon start collecting the aid starting from February 22.

In response to the recent development, Pakistan’s Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said, “When we are asking the whole world to help the Afghan people, how can we stop India from doing so?” India, in response to the call given by UNO, had decided to help Afghanistan with aid in October last year. But at that time Pakistan didn’t allow the material to be sent from India to Afghanistan through its territory, but now the Imran Khan government has finally budged to pass it through its territory.

Rajasthan: Ashok Gehlot approves PFI’s ‘Unity March’ in Kota, BJP calls it ‘Congress soft corner for extremists’

The Ashok-Gehlot government in Rajasthan has permitted the PFI to hold a protest in the state. On Thursday, radical Islamist outfit Popular Front of India (PFI) has organised a ‘unity march’ in Rajasthan’s Kota on the occasion of its annual ‘PFI Day’.

The BJP has hit out at the Congress Government in Rajasthan for allowing the NIA designated radical hate group to enter Rajasthan’s political discourse. Speaking on this issue, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said, “In its recent approach towards popularising and legitimising PFI, Rajasthan government is allowing PFI to take out a march in Kota where thousands of its workers and office-bearers will be allowed to hit the streets. Soft corner for extremist groups.”

While talking to Times Now, Poonawala Lashed out exposing the PFI, when he added, “The NIA has designated PFI as the radical hate group. A group that indulges in extremist and terror activities. Many states have banned PFI, including Uttar Pradesh. Their role in anti-CAA riots is well known and is being investigated. Even the funds received by the PFI to orchestrate these riots have been under ED’s scanner. Despite the plethora of charges and a long list of extremist activities that the PFI has been indulged in, the Congress party continues to provide patronage and legitimacy to the PFI.”

ANI shared images from the PFI’s Unity March where posters opposing the laws like AFSPA and UAPA were held up by PFI supporters.

BJP National spokesperson Sanju Verma was seen tweeting, “Efforts to legitimize radicalism by the Ashok-Gehlot govt, only cements the belief about how Congress endorses crime”

Ironically, Gehlot’s government has been campaigning to end the ‘ghoonghat’ system in rural areas of Rajasthan.

PFI instigating the hijab row

While the Karnataka state government has alleged the role of Campus Front of India (CFI) – the student wing of PFI behind inciting the hijab row, some Burqa-clad Muslim students have already confessed that they were counselled to wear Burqas by CFI and Jamaat-e-Islami. Father of Muskan Zainab – whose claim to fame is her sloganeering of “Allahu Akbar” on the campus, was also found to be a member of radical Islamic group PFI. On Social media, Congress’ involvement in fuelling and propagating the propaganda by PFI was also established.

The principal of the government PU college where the hijab controversy first started, had told media that the concerned students never wore hijab earlier, but have started wearing it under the influence of CFI. The students had also come to college earlier in December with a CFI lawyer, demanding that they should be allowed to sit inside classrooms wearing hijab, in violation of the institution’s dress code.

‘I got 25 crores but gave details of 26.6 crores on MPLADS funds’: Is Bhagwant Mann the only MP to share details of interest amount?

On February 16, during Aaj Tak’s Punjab Panchayat program, Aam Aadmi Party leader Bhagwant Mann claimed he got Rs 25 crores under Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) but had given an account of Rs 26.6 crores during 2014-2019. He said the additional 1.01 crore was the interest paid by the bank, and the remaining amount was carried forward from the previous MP.

He was replying to allegations made by CM Charanjit Singh Channi during a rally where he had questioned what Bhagwant Mann has done for his constituency. He said, “I got 25 crores under MPLADS fund between 2014 and 2019. I gave accounts of Rs 26.61 crores.” Explaining how he got additional funds, Mann said, “When there are elections of any kind, due to Election Commissions code of conduct, I could not use MPLAD funds. During that period bank keeps adding interest to the amount. Rs 1.01 crore was the interest amount that I got in five years. Rs 60 lakh was carried forward from the previous MP. I said if Rs 25 crores belong to the public, its interest belongs to the public as well.”

Bhagwant Mann’s record as MP between 2014-2019

According to the data available at MPLADS’s website, Rs 25 crore were released to Bhagwant Mann during 2014-2019 in 10 instalments of Rs 2.5 crores each.

A total of Rs 25.84 crores were available, including interest for that period. As MP, Mann sanctioned Rs 24.87 crores for the projects in his constituency, out of which Rs 24.53 crores (96.11%) were utilized in the projects. By the time his tenure in the 16th Lok Sabha was completed, he had Rs 1.31 crores unutilized.

Further, the dashboard data shows he had recommended 2,103 works, out of which 1,759 were completed. He had spent the maximum on infrastructure (73.67%) and least on agriculture-related works 0.64%).

The claim over the interest on MPLADS

While the claims made by MP Bhagwant Mann about the funds received and accounted for are close to what government data shows with little difference in the total amount, he tried to imply that he was the only MP who gave accounts for the interest and carry forward amount from the previous MP.

The reality is, as per the law, whatever amount the previous MP was unable to utilize will be carried forward to the successor MP. Also, interest on the amount is accumulated and accounted for all the MPs, and Bhagwant Mann has not done anything out of the ordinary.

Source: MPLADS.gov.in

As a matter of fact, only six MPs out of 15 MPs from Punjab had spent a lesser amount compared to Mann. Three MPs, Sunil Kumar Jakhar (INC) at 119.23%, Vijay Sampla (BJP) at 100.23% and Sher Singh Ghubaya (INC) at 100.33%, had spent more than the initially sanctioned amount.

As per the law, MPs can ask for additional funds if required. The interest and carry forward amount is adjusted in the ‘amount available with interest’ for every MP.

Punjab CM Channi calls AAP CM-candidate Bhagwant Mann a ‘drunkard and illiterate’

Ahead of the assembly elections in Punjab, the political parties have intensified personal attacks against their competitors.

In the latest attack, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi referred to Aam Aadmi Party’s Chief Ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann as a “drunkard and illiterate person”.

CM Channi claimed that Mann, who is AAP’s chief minister candidate, has taken three years to pass his 12th Board exams and asked how the people can give command of Punjab to him.

“Bhagwant Mann is a drunkard and illiterate person. He passed 12th class in three years. How can we give command of Punjab to such a person?” Channi asked in an election rally in Bathinda. Punjab Chief Minister Channi was campaigning for Manpreet Singh Badal, the candidate from the Bathinda Urban seat.

Last week, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had claimed that Bhagwant Mann had failed on his promise of giving up alcohol.

The elections in Punjab will be held on February 20 to elect 117 members of the state Assembly. The counting of votes will be done on March 10.

Bhagwant Mann and his ‘drunk’ incidents:

Bhagwant Mann, the AAP’s chief ministerial candidate, is known in the political circle as “Pegwant Mann” for his alleged addiction to drinking alcohol. The Lok Sabha MP from Sangrur has come under the scanner several times in the past for his indecent behaviour.

From funerals to Parliament sessions, comic-turned-politician Bhagwant Mann has displayed his theatrics in an intoxicated condition.

It all started when the fellow parliamentarians accused Bhagwant Mann of arriving at Parliament after consuming alcohol. In 2015, former AAP leader Yogendra Yadav had alleged that Mann attended Parliament sessions drunk.

“I discovered it first in July 2014 when AAP had a meeting of all its Lok Sabha candidates. Mann was sitting next to me and was smelling of alcohol. I mentioned it to Arvind Kejriwal, and he nodded. Around this time, I heard rumours that Mann was going to the Lok Sabha sessions drunk,” said Yadav.

In October 2015, at the bhog ceremony of the Faridkot firing victims, Mann was asked to leave the stage after Jagtar Singh, former granthi of Dabar Sahib, Amritsar, had found him drunk. The incident caused AAP national embarrassment.

A few months later, the then Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had accused Mann of being an alcohol addict.

A week later, AAP leader Harinder Singh Khalsa had written to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan stating that it is “torturous” to sit next to Mann, who “reeks of liquor”.

In August 2016, three more MPs wrote to a nine-member committee set up by the then Speaker Mahajan on the same issue.

A month before, Mann had live-streamed his trip to Parliament and posted it on Facebook, triggering outrage from other members of the House. Mann was accused of breaching security by shooting a video around Parliament. It was alleged that Mann was drunk on that day and had leaked the Parliament security apparatus. Following the incident, the AAP MP was asked by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan not to attend the sittings of the House until a decision was taken.

In November 2016, Mann had also allegedly turned up at the funeral of Manmeet Alisher in an inebriated condition. The family had asked Mann to leave the premises since he misbehaved with them and the journalists present at the venue.

Again in 2018, Bhagwant Mann had gone to address in an election rally at Gol Diggi in Bhatinda. When it was Mann’s turn to speak, Mann could not even stand. He was seen blowing flying kisses to the people before collapsing on the dais. He managed to get up somehow and, after blowing some more flying kisses, he started speaking.

‘You are safe around Hindu Samaj, no need to wear hijab’: BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya

On February 16, while speaking at an event in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Sadhvi Pragya said when a (Muslim) woman is around people from Hindu samaj, there is no need to wear hijab.

In a 40-second video of the event shared by news agency ANI, Sadhvi Pragya was seen saying, “A Hindu has high values and culture that we do not need to wear hijab anywhere. Hijab is required for those who face danger at their homes. They should wear hijab at home. There is no need to wear hijab when they are among people of Hindu samaj, especially at educational institutions.”

Earlier during another event, Sadhvi Pragya had said women are worshipped in Sanatan Dharma, and there is no need to wear hijab. It is only required in the houses where men can marry anyone, including cousins and relatives. She warned if anyone breaks the dress code at educational institutions, it will not be tolerated.

She said, “When you go out, it does not matter to us if you show your face or not. It does not matter if you are beautiful or ugly. If you put hijab in place of hair dye and hair dye in place of hijab, it is obvious things will turn upside down. It does not matter if you wear hijab or put hair dye in madarsa, but if you refuse to follow regulations in rest of the educational institutes, Hindus will not tolerate.”

‘If Cm Yogi and Sadhvi Pragya can wear religious attire, why not women can wear hijab’ – Congress

On February 8, former actress and Congress leader Nagma had raised objections on the religious attire of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Sadhvi Pragya while talking about the hijab controversy. She said, “India is a secular country. Every citizen has the right to follow their religion. If Yogi Adityanath and Sadhvi Pragya can wear particular religious attire, then the government should not have objection with hijab.”

Calling saffron scarf-wearing boys in Karnataka goons, Nagma had said BJP failed at the development front hence using such controversies for political gains.
