China: Uyghur woman in Xinjiang sentenced to 14 years in prison for teaching Islam and keeping copies of the Quran

According to reports, an Uyghur woman abducted from her home in China’s Xinjiang region in the middle of the night more than four years ago was sentenced to 14 years in prison for providing Islamic instruction to children in her neighbourhood and hiding copies of the Quran.

Hasiyet Ehmet, aged 57 and a native of Manas (Manasi) county in Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang, has not been heard from since she was kidnapped by Chinese officials in May 2017.

After RFA (Radio Free Asia) first reported on Hasiyet’s case, a source with knowledge of the situation told RFA’s Uyghur Service that authorities have sentenced the woman to 14 years in prison — seven for teaching the Quran and giving religious lessons to local children and another seven years for hiding two copies of the sacred text during a period when police began confiscating religious books from Manas county residents.

According to sources tracking the incident, officers from the county’s No. 3 police station had stormed into Hasiyet’s home and placed a black hood over her head, ignoring her plea to put on different clothing or fetch her medicine before taking her away. Hasiyet Ehmet was sentenced to 14 years in prison, according to a Manas county court official.

“It was because of teaching kids the Quran and hiding two copies of Quran when authorities were confiscating them, and later getting caught,” the official said. Hasiyet’s spouse was convicted of “separatism” charges and sentenced to life in prison in 2009, nine years before her arrest.

Hasiyet had stopped teaching children two years before her arrest because of health problems and had refrained from attending public events, but still, she was arrested and punished.

Persecution of Uyghur Muslims in China

For years, Chinese authorities in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region have tortured a number of Uyghur Muslims as part of a campaign to monitor, control, and assimilate members of the Islamic community in an effort to stop religious extremism and terrorist activities.

Since 2017, 1.8 million Uyghurs and other Turkic minorities are reported to have been incarcerated in a network of detention centres in Xinjiang. Beijing has disputed numerous and documented complaints that it has abused Muslims in Xinjiang by claiming that the camps are vocational training institutes. The strategy of the Communist Party of China (CCP) is to strip Uyghurs of their religious and ethnic identity and assimilate them into the dominant Han Chinese ethnicity. While Uyghur Muslims are often subjected to re-educational programs, forced labour, and digital surveillance, their children are indoctrinated in orphanages.

Censorship, propaganda, and disinformation by Beijing to deny accusations of widespread mistreatment of Uyghurs

To counter damning international reports, the CCP censored all Western news detailing the atrocities perpetrated against the Uyghurs in the detention camps. Several international journalists who covered the Uyghurs’ captivity were expelled from China, while academics, activists, and survivors who tried to reveal China’s deception were ridiculed and hounded. Those who spoke out against the unlawful arrest of Uyghurs in China were either silenced or imprisoned.

The crackdown on Uyghur Muslims was followed by a propaganda effort in which detention camps were depicted as “vocational training” education centres, complete with staged media tours for official sources interviewing “graduates” who praised the system.

Simultaneously, the CCP’s disinformation arm swung into action, dismissing Uyghur persecution as a figment of Western fiction and sowing confusion about the size of the “education centres” and the abuses suffered by the detainees, while also portraying Beijing as a victim of violent extremism and Western propaganda.

Initially, the CCP kept its Xinjiang internment camps for Uyghur Muslims a secret. When word of their existence began to circulate in the international media, China’s immediate reaction was to deploy censorship to limit its dissemination in Chinese media while strongly denying their existence.

When overwhelming evidence to the opposite became clear, China reversed course and started a propaganda campaign claiming they were just “education centres” where the ignorant Uyghur people might learn useful skills.

The Taliban appraisal of China and disdain for Uyghurs

Soon after US forces left war-torn Afghanistan, the Taliban said that China is a “friend” of Afghanistan and that it hopes China would help in the country’s restoration.

Suhail Shaheen, a Taliban spokesman, told the South China Morning Post that the extremist Islamic organisation currently controlled 85 percent of Afghan land and will ensure the safety of Chinese businessmen and employees.

During the interview, Shaheen stated that the Taliban had convinced China that it will not host Uyghur terrorists from China’s Xinjiang province, some of whom had previously fled to Afghanistan to avoid Chinese persecution.

China is concerned that, under Taliban administration, Afghanistan might become a base for the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), a separatist group linked to Al-Qaeda that is conducting an insurgency in China’s Xinjiang autonomous region. Uyghur Muslims live in the northwest Xinjian area, which shares an 8-kilometer border with Afghanistan.

Covid-19 scare has enveloped the Supreme Court of India as Four judges have tested positive for COVID-19 and more than 150 staff members are either positive or under quarantine until now. Earlier on Thursday, the news of 2 judges being tested positively for Covid-19 had appeared. As of now, four judges of the Supreme Court and over 150 court officials have tested positive for Coronavirus.

With four judges getting infected, the positivity rate among the judges has reached 12.5%.

Apart from four judges, five of the eight top court officers designated as Registrars, who are in charge of various sections which feed pending cases on a daily basis to the benches for hearing, have also been quarantined.

Now it has been learnt that a farewell party for a retiring judge may have been turned into a superspreader event, and an already infected judge may have spread the virus among the people who had attended the party.

The development came after a farewell party was hosted on Tuesday, January 04, by The CJI for retiring Justice R Subhash Reddy. Initially reluctant about the gathering of more than 30 judges, who had travelled to different locations during the winter break, The CJI agreed to host a high-tea for the retiring Justice.

Apart from switching to virtual hearings, the court had decided that only extremely urgent matters especially those involving stay and bail will be listed before the courts.

Bishnoi community in Rajasthan to build a memorial for Black Bucks killed by Salman Khan: Read why they consider the deer sacred

The Bishnoi community in the Kankani village of Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district is reportedly going to construct a grand memorial to honour the blackbuck killed by Salman Khan. The people of this village consider deer sacred. At least 200 youths belonging to the Bishnoi community are involved in the initiative. In 1998, Salman Khan had hunted a blackbuck near the shooting location of his film Hum Saath Saath Hain. He was sentenced to five years in jail after a court delivered the verdict in a case filed by the Bishnoi community.

Memorial for the black buck killed by Salman Khan

The Bishnoi community of Rajasthan considers deer as sacred and that Salman Khan had killed a blackbuck while he was in Jodhpur for the shooting a film had enraged the community and hurt their sentiments. Now, a grand monument and an animal rescue centre are being built at the same place where the deer was found dead. A huge statue of Panch Dhatu of black deer will be erected at the site, and a rescue centre will also be built for the treatment of animals and birds.

What does the community say?

A member of the Bishnoi community said, “After the construction of this monument, we will pass our learning Guru, Jambhoji Maharaj, to the next generation. Jambhoji Maharaj said that ‘sar kate rukh bache to bhi sasta jaan’, which means that even if the head is cut off, the youth of the Bishnoi community should be ready to save the environment, trees and animals at any cost.” He further added that about two hundred youths from the Bishnoi community have taken this initiative to build a memorial on seven bighas of land and for this, the work of levelling has started with two dozen JCBs.

Why deer is sacred for Bishnois?

The Bishnois are known for their love for nature worship and wildlife conservation. It was this community that pursued this matter with a conviction for the killings which is deemed to be a crime, not only towards the animal but also to their faith. The Bishnois of Jodhpur consider the blackbuck to be the reincarnation of their religious Guru Bhagwan Jambeshwar also known as Jambaji. A Bishnoi, therefore, would never tolerate the killing of wild animals or the cutting down of a tree. The origins of the Bishnois community date back as far past as the late 15th Century.

A preacher called Guru Jambeshwar established the sect. While some believe the term ‘Bishnoi’ is a derivative of Vishnu, the principal deity of the Bishnois, others believe it means twenty (Bish) nine (noi) in a local Rajasthani dialect. This alludes to a list of 29 commandments laid down by Jambeshwar, which all Bishnois are required to follow. They have been known to make many sacrifices for the protection of animals, especially the endangered blackbuck. They can even sacrifice their lives to save this creature.

The legal provisions and contribution of Bishnois

Blackbucks and chinkaras are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act. The Bishnois consider the former as sacred. They follow what is perhaps the world’s only environment-friendly religion and recognize the rights of birds, animals and trees to live in peace and harmony with humans. Reports show that in 2016, over 1,700 people who were involved in wildlife crimes in Rajasthan were arrested due to the efforts of this community.

One of the commandments of Bishnois says that they should not cut trees and save the environment. Another commandment talks about how protecting animals is a major cause of them. “Provide shelters for abandoned animals to avoid them from being slaughtered in abattoirs,” it reads, making clear the Bishnoi’s reverence of all life on the planet. This can be deemed as one of the biggest reasons the Bishnois wished to see any poacher convicted – even if it were a film star.

Out of their 29 commandments, many talks about preservation of nature and animals. Their 23rd commandment says that they can not sterilize bulls, another one asks them to not eat meat, always remain pure vegetarian. It was the commitment to their principles that they fearlessly lodged complaint against Salman Khan.

Black Buck Killing Case

23 years ago, in 1998 when Salman Khan and few of his other co-actors were in Jodhpur for the shooting of a film scheduled at the location, they went on a safari. At that time Salman Khan had shot a black buck. On April 5, 2018, the Rajasthan Sessions Court convicted the star and sentenced him to five-year imprisonment. Salman’s lawyers appealed against the sentence, and the matter is still pending in the Rajasthan High Court. His co-actors Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Neelam Kothari were acquitted.

MP ex-cop removed from WhatsApp group by DGP for saying those who voted for Muslim League stayed back in India: Why he was right

A retired top cop was recently removed from the Whatsapp group of Madhya Pradesh State IPS officers for saying that Muslims, who voted in favour of the Muslim League, stayed back in India.

As per reports, the ex-police officer was identified as Maithili Sharan Gupta. While responding to a remark by Javed Akthar that the forefathers of Indian Muslims chose India as their home, Gupta had shared the link of a Youtube video in the WhatsApp group of IPS MP.

The former Special DGP (Police Reform) had challenged the conventional belief that the forefathers of the Indian Muslims voluntarily chose to go to Pakistan. He wrote, “Those who voted for Muslim League, instead of going to Pakistan, they stayed back in India. Post-Independence, our black Britishers let them sit on the heads of Hindus.”

The message further added, “They were given more rights under the law and this is the root cause of all problems. They were made education ministers, subsequently, they changed your history.” Gupta was asked to delete the supposedly ‘communal’ WhatsApp message by incumbent State DGP Vivek Johri.

“Such political/communal post should have no place in this group. Pl delete,” Johri had said. When he refused to comply with the diktat, Maithili Sharan Gupta was removed from the group by the admin.

While speaking about the matter to The Indian Express, the retired cop said, “A very junior officer called me and asked me to delete the post. But I told him that I found nothing objectionable in it and refused to delete it.”

On learning about his removal from the WhatsApp group of IPS MP, Gupta said that it was a small issue as compared to the suffering of the Hindu community. He added how it was important to make people aware of the plight of Hindus.

Muslims oversaw creation of Pakistan, many stayed back despite voting for Muslim League

During the provincial elections in 1946, it is an undisputed fact that Muslims voted overwhelmingly for Muslim League which had stirred up religious passions with its demand for a separate Islamic State at the time. The Muslim League asserted that Hindus and Muslims cannot co-exist in the same country and thus, Muslims should have a country of their own carved out of India itself, post-independence.

In total, 87% of seats were won by the Muslim League in India in 1946. A closer look at the numbers shows how the demand for a separate Islamic State bolstered the political demand for a separate state. The table below shows a comparison between the seats won by the Muslim League in 1937 and 1946. As one can see, the number of states that were won by the Muslim League of Jinnah went up manyfold in 1946. In every state, the rise in the popularity of the Muslim League was substantial. In states like Bihar, for example, from zero seats in 1937, the Muslim League won a whopping 34 seats out of 40 seats.

In Madras, the increase was from 9 to all 29 seats. The pattern holds across all states, or provinces, as they were called during that period. It is to be remembered that though the two-nation theory itself existed for much longer, a formal political demand was made for a separate state for Muslims in 1940. It was in 1940 that Jinnah formally announced the demand in Lahore that the Muslim League formally recommitted itself to creating an independent Muslim state, including Sindh, Punjab, Baluchistan, the North-West Frontier Province and Bengal, that would be “wholly autonomous and sovereign”.

The resolution guaranteed protection for non-Muslim religions. The Lahore Resolution moved by the sitting Chief Minister of Bengal A. K. Fazlul Huq was adopted on 23 March 1940, and its principles formed the foundation for Pakistan’s first constitution. The formalisation of the demand in 1940 led to a huge surge in the Muslim population supporting the Muslim League and by extension, supporting the demand for a separate Islamic State called Pakistan, which would be carved out of India.

It is thus intriguing when several apologists claim that most Muslims stayed back in India out of choice and that most Muslims at the time did not want a separate Islamic state. There can be no denying that there was opposition even from the Muslims at the time to the idea of a separate state, however, political statements and what counts during voting are two rather separate concepts.

If Muslims wanted a separate Islamic State and voted overwhelmingly in its favour, why did so many Muslims stay back? The obvious argument that is presented, sans facts, to counter the overwhelming support for the creation of Pakistan is that if most Muslims at the time supported the two-nation theory, then why did so many Muslims stay back. And if they indeed did stay back, it only means that they rejected the two-nation theory.

After partition, several leaders were in support of the full exchange of population, including leaders like BR Ambedkar. In his book on Partition, Ambedkar clearly outlines how and why he was in favour of a full population exchange between India and Pakistan, which would essentially mean that all Hindus and other religious factions other than Muslims would come back to India and all Muslims from India would go to Pakistan. In fact, he had even written a basic framework on how the issues arising out of full population exchange could be dealt with.

Sardar Patel had, even after the partition spoken extensively about how Muslims had helped create Pakistan. His famous quote from his speech in Kolkata, 1948, bears testament to the fact. He had said, “Most of the Muslims who have stayed back in Hindustan, helped in creating Pakistan. Now, I don’t understand what has changed in one night that they are asking us not to doubt their loyalty”.

Further, one has to remember that the demand for full population exchange was supported by several stalwarts at the time. A report in Sunday Guardian says, “Dr Mookerjee, accompanied by Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, went to plead with Gandhi for agreeing to Jinnah’s proposal for an exchange of population, the old man’s flat reply was that partition was on a territorial basis and not on religious grounds. Hence, no question of exchanging Hindus from Pakistan with Muslims from India. This was when the division was exclusively on the criterion of religion, Hindu and Muslim”.

Delhi HC refuses to dismiss FIR against rape accused govt employee following settlement and marriage with the victim

0

The Delhi High Court has refused to dismiss an FIR filed against a government employee charged with rape, stating that such an FIR cannot be dismissed on the basis of a settlement reached between the parties and their subsequent marriage because it does not absolve the claimed violation.

The Court was hearing a motion to quash an FIR filed under sections 376, 323, and 506 of the IPC against the man. The woman informed police that she got into an argument with her male companion, the petitioner, who is a government employee, and that he tried to attack her. Later, she revealed that the man had committed sexual assault on her when she went to talk to him about their marriage.

The lady alleged that she contacted the man via matrimonial website Jeevansathi.com, and that he wanted her telephone number. The man then informed her that he was 32 years old, single, and a Customs officer. He did, however, hide the fact that he had a prior love marriage and that his first wife had committed suicide, for which a court case was underway.

Later, the man put vermillion on her and told her that they were husband and wife, but he refused to let her meet his family. The woman further claimed in her complaint that the petitioner then raped her in a car, following which she filed another complaint against him.

She later dropped her case after the man returned to the police station and made another vow to marry her.

The Court noted that, while both parties had reached an amicable settlement and the lady had also filed an affidavit on record stating that they have married each other and has no objection if the FIR was quashed, charges could not be said to have been negated or that the accusations levelled by the lady regarding the alleged crime had lost their gravity.

Saying that rape is not a crime against individuals but an act against society, Justice Rajnish Bhatnagar stated that “In the present case, the petitioner is a Government Servant, working as Superintendent with Customs & CGST department, Govt. of India, holding a Gazetted post. So being a Government Servant, he is expected to maintain high moral rectitude and decent standard of conduct in his personal/private life and not bring discredit to his service by his misdemeanours.”

“In view of the settled position enumerated in Gian Singh’s case (supra) and other cases referred to hereinabove, the criminal proceedings emanating from FIR No. 219/2021 registered at Police Station Patparganj Industrial Area, with the allegations of rape cannot be quashed in exercise of powers vested in this Court under Section 482 Cr.P.C. on the basis of settlement between the complainant (Respondent No. 2) and the petitioner and their subsequent marriage as the same does not waive off the offence as alleged by the complainant against the petitioner,” the Court ordered accordingly dismissing the petition.

‘Allah gave birth to the Sun, we cannot worship it’: JDU MLC Gulam Rasool Balyawi opposes Surya Namaskar on January 12

Bharatiya Janata Party is observing ‘Surya Namaskar’ Day on January 12 on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Swamy Vivekananda. It was expected that its allies in Bihar would participate in the celebrations. However, Janta Dal (United)’s Bihar MLC Gulam Rasool Balyawi has created a controversy by refusing to participate in the event, as it is not allowed in Islam. He added that as Allah gave birth to the sun, Muslims can’t pray to the sun.

Gulam Rasool Balyawi said, “In Islam, we worship only Allah. The followers of Allah and Islam cannot worship any other object that Allah has created. We worship the one who gives birth and not who are born.” Furthermore, he said ‘Surya Namaskar’ means worshipping the Sun, which is prohibited in Islam. Referring to the Constitution of India, he said, “Every individual has the freedom to follow Gods and Goddess as per their faith. In Islam, we believe that God is only one, and we worship Allah.”

Congress leader Kamal Nath has also opposed the Surya Namaskar day on January 12, although for different reasons. He has demanded that the event should be cancelled due to the Covid-19 situation, which has started to worsen in the country. “We are not against Surya Namaskar but seeing the increasing cases of Corona infections, we want children to do Surya Namaskar but in the safety of their homes. There should not be collective Surya Namaskar functions held in crowded public places because it will break the Corona guidelines,” he said.

Earlier, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board(AIMPLB) had objected to the central government’s directive to organise ‘Surya Namaskar’ in schools between January 1 to 7 on the 75th anniversary of Independence Day. In a statement issued by AIMPLB, the board stated that Islam prohibits ‘Surya Namaskar’ as it is a form of Surya puja.

“Such a program should not be organised in schools at all, which causes problems for students of other religions. The government should envision programmes keeping national security in mind. Muslim students should boycott such programmes of Surya Namaskar organised in their schools. They should refrain from attending such program as Islam does not allow them to participate in such program,” the official statement by AIMPLB said.

84-yr-old Bihar man, who allegedly took 11 doses of COVID -19 vaccine, to face probe

0

The Bihar Police has booked an 84-yr-old man, Bramhadev Mandal, who had earlier claimed to have taken 11 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. Mandal, a resident of the Puraini area of Madhepura, Bihar, allegedly misled healthcare workers at different places with different identity cards since the vaccination drive started last year in January. He had claimed the multiple vaccine doses also helped him in his knee pain.

According to Police officials, Primary health care (PHC), Puraini had earlier registered a complaint against Mandal and the investigation is underway. “It has been alleged in the complaint that Mandal misled health workers on different dates and places, on the basis of different identity cards, and got 11 vaccine doses, breaking the rules of vaccination. This has been done by him between February 13, 2021, and January 4, 2022,” the Station House officer added.

According to Bramhadev Mandal, he has never fallen ill after taking repeated doses of the vaccine and his health has started to improve. Responding to Mandal’s claims, Dr Amarendra Pratap Shahi, Civil Surgeon, Madhepura said, “Whether his claims are true or false is a matter of investigation. We will check the hospital records and take action against the persons involved in the matter if his claims are found to be true.”

Additional Secretary & Mission Director, National Health Mission, Vikas Sheel added, ”only one person named Brahmdev Mandal and age 85 has got vaccinated, that too with a unique Aadhaar number”. He reminded that the Co-Win app does not allow multiple beneficiaries on the same ID and doing so is against the vaccination rules.

Indian Express spreads fake news, claims BJP workers raised “Khalistani slogans” near Ludhiana DC’s office: Here is the truth

A report in English Daily Indian Express was published on January 8 with the title ‘Khalistani slogans raised by BJP workers near Ludhiana DC’s office’. The title, at first, clearly communicates that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers raised slogans favouring Khalistan. However, the reality is far from the clickbait title that IE has used.

The anti-Khalistan slogans raised by BJP

At the beginning of the report, IE said Ludhiana BJP workers, along with their supporters, reached the district Deputy Commissioner’s office to submit a memorandum in regards to the security breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ferozpur. As per the report, ‘Khalistani slogans were raised’.

Moving further, IE’s own report suggested the slogans that BJP workers raised were of ‘Khalistania da yaar Channi murdabad’ (friend of Khalistanis, Channi Murdabad), and ‘Attwadian nu panah den wala Channi murdabad’ (one who host terrorists, Channi murdabad).

IE quoted Pushpinder Singal, district president of BJP, saying that when BJP’s workers were going for the rally via buses, they were stopped multiple times. “At some of these stops, the protesters [allegedly] were raising slogans of ‘Khalistan Zindabad’ and were spotted tearing posters of PM Narendra Modi. These protesters were mostly youngsters, and we don’t know under whose influence they were raising these slogans. There were policemen everywhere, yet they did nothing when the slogans were raised. They just watched on as mute spectators. If you are quiet, then you become a party to the wrongdoing. The police were acting under the direction of the Punjab government. Hence, today slogans were raised to condemn those slogans. Today’s slogans mentioned the CM as a friend of Khalistanis and also as someone who acts as a host for terrorists.”

Speaking to OpIndia, Pushpinder Singal said he would look into the matter and talk to Indian Express about the misleading title.

CCI set to investigate Google after digital news publishers allege abuse of dominance in ad revenue share

Fair Trade regulator Competition Council of India (CCI) has decided to initiate a probe against tech Giant Google. This came after a complaint filed by The Digital Publishers Association claiming that Google was abusing its position as a dominant player in news aggregation by imposing unfair conditions on news publishers.

The Digital Publishers Association is a private body that secures the interests of digital news publishers. In its petition, it had accused Google of denying fair share in online advertising revenue while hiding necessary information to reach a fair settlement. While speaking on behalf of its members, the organisation said that news portals are determined to invest a sizeable amount of effort and revenue in providing fair and credible news.

In response to the petition, The CCI has asked its Director General of Investigation to launch a probe on the basis of the case filed by the Digital Publishers Association and to submit a report in 60 days. In a 21-page initial order, The CCI said, “In a well-functioning democracy, the critical role played by news media can’t be undermined.” It asserted that Google appears acting as a gateway between various news publishers and readers. The commission added that in its prima facie view, Google has violated provisions of Section 4 of the Competition Act, 2002 which accounts for abuse of dominant position.

“The allegations of the informant, when seen in this vertically integrated ecosystem operated by Google, makes it prima facie appear that news publishers have no choice but to accept the terms and conditions imposed by Google” added CCI on Friday. According to the body, while the tech giant channels 50% of total traffic on digital news portals, through its algorithms it determines which news website gets searched prominently through Google search.

Earlier in September 2021, Google India was found guilty of stifling competition by mandating the pre-installation of its product apps in mobile phones by the Competition Commission of India.
