Rahul Gandhi follows mamma Gandhi’s footsteps: Writes to Uddhav Thackeray, regrets not being able to attend swearing-in

After almost a month-long political logjam in Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray is set to become the chief minister of the state. Soon after Congress’ interim President Sonia Gandhi wrote a letter to Uddhav Thackeray regretting that she will not be able to attend the swearing-in ceremony, Rahul Gandhi followed suit.

He too has written a letter to the Shiv Sena chief. While congratulating him on taking oath as Maharashtra’s CM today, he informed him that he would be unable to attend the ceremony.

Following his mother’s footstep, who in her letter had written about ‘threats to country’ from BJP, Rahul too said that BJP had attempted to ‘undermine democracy’ and that he was glad that Vikas Aghadi has come together to defeat BJP in its endeavour.

The letter was written by Rahul Gandhi to Uddhav Thackeray

Interestingly, in her letter, Sonia Gandhi spoke about the dangers of the BJP. She wrote that Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP have come together under “extraordinary circumstances” at a time when the country “faces unprecedented threats from the BJP”. She writes that the political atmosphere has become “poisonous” and that the BJP has ruined the economy. She also talks about the distress being faced by farmers.

In what almost sounds like a taunt to Shiv Sena, she says that she is confident that all three parties will strive to implement the Common Minimum Program and provide a purposeful government to the people of Maharashtra.

Earlier today, the Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP CMP were released where it was revealed that Shiv Sena had agreed to be a part of a government that upholds the “secular values of the Constitution”. The CMP, among other promises, mentions that the alliance will pass a law that proves for 80% job reservation to locals from Maharashtra.

Kerala: Nimisha and Bexin both convert to Islam and become ISIS terrorists, located in Afghanistan

0

Three people part of a group who had left the country to join ISIS has been identified by the relatives and families in Kerala after they surrendered in Afghanistan.

According to the reports, 29-year-old Nimisha alias Fathima, her husband Bexin and their child have been identified by Nimisha’s mother Bindu Sampath. They were identified from the photographs provided by the NIA officials as part of the verification.

Speaking to the media, Bindu Sampath, mother of Nimisha said that the NIA officials shared photographs of the group which had surrendered. “Among them, I identified my daughter Nimisha (Fathima), her husband Bexin and their kid. I’ve also shared the photo with Bexin’s mother who had also confirmed their identity,” said Bindu Sampath.

However, she added that they have not received any official communication from the Centre.

Reportedly, Nimisha, a Dental student who hailed from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram, had married a Christian youth named Bexin from Palakkad without informing her mother Bindu Sampath. Later, the couple had converted to Islam. Nimisha had informed Bindu that she was travelling to Sri Lanka for religious studies.

Reportedly, Nimisha was pregnant when she left India. Nimisha’s brother is a National Security Guard (NSG) commando. Nimisha, who got converted to Islam took the name Fathima, went to Syria with her husband and their child to join the Islamic State (IS) in 2016.

The family had earlier alleged that it was a case of love jihad as the girl was converted.  “My children were religious and patriotic. My son wanted to be a military officer and daughter chose to be a dentist,” Nimisha’s brother Bindu had said.

Last week, more than 900 ISIS terrorists surrendered to Afghanistan authorities. Among them, there were at least 10 women and children, who are families of Indian terrorists. Most of these 10 women and children belong to Kerala. The terrorists had surrendered in the Eastern province of Nangarhar, where the Afghan national security forces are conducting operations against the ISIS.

Since 2016, several terrorists from Kerala have travelled to Afghanistan. Some had even converted to Islam to join the terror outfit. Many of them take their families along with them. The 10 women and children who have surrendered are believed to be the family members of ISIS terrorists from India who travelled to Afghanistan.

Human Bombs to Forced Sterilization: Here are 10 things Congress must clarify its stand on now that Shiv Sena is its trusted ally

The Congress party entered an opportunistic alliance with the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra to keep the BJP out of power. In the process, numerous compromises had to be made on both sides on their respective ideologies. While we have focused on how the Shiv Sena has given up on its ideology earlier, in this report, we shall focus on some stands of the party that the Congress will have to explain its stand on.

Twitter user @TweetinderKaul created a thread that exposes how hollow the attempts to secularize Shiv Sena really are given their past conduct and stands. Some of them have been included in this report. Considering the fact that we can expect such attempts to be made soon enough, here are 10 comments made by Shiv Sena that the Congress party should clarify its stand on.

1. Uddhav Thackeray’s words on Veer Savarkar’s haters

Uddhav Thackeray in August this year said that those who do not believe in Veer Savarkar ought to be beaten up. He said that they should be beaten because they won’t realize the struggle and importance of Veer Savarkar in the Indian Freedom Movement. He said, “Those who do not respect Savarkar should be once thrashed publicly, in chowks (square). Till then they will not realise who had toiled to what extent to attain freedom for the country.”

Uddhav Thackeray’s comments came just days after the student’s wing of the Congress party, the NSUI, blackened the bust of Savarkar that the ABVP-led DU students union had installed at the Delhi University.

2. Muslims’ Voting Rights should be revoked: Shiv Sena

Sanjay Raut, who is flying high at the moment, explained in 2015 why Balasaheb Thackeray had said that the voting rights of Muslims should be revoked. Sanjay Raut had said in an article on Saamna, “As long as Muslim votes are for sale, the community will remain backward and its leaders will become rich.” He added, “Owaisi Bhai is doing politics of Muslim votes and we don’t know if it will benefit him or the community, but it will harm the country.” These are the reasons why Balasaheb said what he said, Sanjay Raut explained.

The Congress party, for its part, was quite angry. Abhishek Manu Singhvi had stated, “We are not in a Talibani state.” Four years later, however, the two are in an alliance with each other.

3. Smashed Babri in 17 minutes: Sanjay Raut

It’s easy to forget now but there was a time when Shiv Sena pretended to be more Hindutvavadi than the BJP itself. At the heart of it was, obviously, Sanjay Raut. In November, last year, he demanded that a law be brought in to pave the way for a Bhavya Ram Mandir at Ayodhya. “We demolished the Babri in 17 minutes,” he said, “how long does it take to pass a law?”

4. Ban the Burqa: Shiv Sena

Consistent with its pretence of being more Hindutvavadi than the BJP, the Shiv Sena demanded in May in its mouthpiece, Saamna, that the Burqa be banned in the country following the terror attacks in Sri Lanka. “This restriction has been recommended as an emergency measure to ensure the security forces do not encounter difficulties in identifying anybody. People wearing face-masks or burqas could pose a threat to national security,” the Sena said in its editorial.

The Sena said that the ban “has already come in Ravana’s (Sri) Lanka, when will it be implemented in Ram’s Ayodhya — this is our question to (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi.” “This work will require as much daring as a ‘surgical strike.’ The Sri Lankan President had done it by overnight banning burqa or veils or face-covers of any types in all public places. This is a work of great courage and restraint exhibited by (Sri Lanka) President Maithripala Sirisena,” it said.

“When any voice is raised against these practices, immediately there are cries of ‘Islam is in danger’, and it seems religion takes precedence over nationalism among Muslims. Muslim women have been sporting burqas/veils under the wrong impression that it is a Quranic tenet,” the Sena said. Amusingly enough, the BJP had opposed Shiv Sena’s demand.

5. The Uniform Civil Code

The Shiv Sena has always advocated for a Uniform Civil Code. In July 2016, it said its editorial in Saamna, “India may have an all-inclusive culture, but politicians have wreaked havoc in the name of secularism in the past 60 years. There is a different law for Hindus and Muslims. The truth is, having a separate law for Muslims is like encouraging the formation of another Pakistan.”

“Notwithstanding the opposition from Muslim leaders, the government should go ahead with the implementation of the (Uniform Civil) Code, which is a national work. The Modi government has an absolute majority. This needs to be respected by them,” the Sena had said.

In August, after the abrogation of Article 370, the party said in an editorial, “After bringing in law against triple talaq and scrapping Article 370 in Kashmir, Modi is now being asked when will uniform civil code come in the country. We are confident that the day is not far. Modi and (Home Minister Amit) Shah have already taken steps in that direction.”

“Now giving triple talaq is a criminal offence. Muslim women will now get justice as per the Indian Penal Code and not through Sharia or Islamic laws… Article 35A and 370 were impediments in the country’s Constitution and uniform civil code. After removing it, Modi has cleared the road for common civil code,” it said. Quite clearly, the Shiv Sena’s stand on the matter is in stark contrast with its newfound ally, the Congress party.

6. Shiv Sena’s Lathi Puja for Valentine’s Day

The Congress party likes to project itself as extremely progressive, in fact so progressive that it appears insane at times. However, now, it’s in an alliance with a party that wants to harass couples on Valentines Day. Last year, ahead of Valentines Day, the Shiv Sena in Muzaffarnagar conducted a ‘lathi puja’ on February 11 and three days later, these purified lathis were to be used on couples who engaged in public displays of affection.

The Vice-President of Uttar Pradesh Shiv Sena was quoted as saying, “Our workers will visit restaurants and hotels and conduct checks. We have also warned owners of such establishments not to organise Valentine’s Day events. There could be a risk of property damage, for which the owners themselves will be responsible.”

Another member said, “Celebration of Valentine’s Day increases the occurrence of love jihad. This is not our culture. Our people will be deployed in parks and schools. If we find someone in an objectionable position, we will teach him a lesson.” It’s a question worth asking. How does Rahul Gandhi, who waxes eloquence of politics of love, feel about being in an alliance with a party that purifies lathis before using them on couples on Valentines Day?

7. Every Hindu Family with five children to get Rs. 2 lakhs: Shiv Sena

Concerned over the falling growth rate of Hindus, the Agra unit of the Shiv Sena announced a reward of Rs. 2 lakhs for every Hindu family that has five children. The Shiv Sena was also concerned over the growing population of Muslims. In addition to the Uniform Civil Code, they demanded an end to the system of “several wives per husband”.

Veenu Lavania, president of the Sena’s Agra unit, told TOI, “After the recent census report, we are concerned over the falling growth of Hindu population while the Muslim population in India grew by 24.6% between 2001 and 2011. In contrast, the decadal population growth of Hindus stood at 16.8% during the same period. We have now decided to introduce the reward system, in which we are going to give Rs two lakh to all those Hindu families who gave birth to a minimum of five children. This will be with retrospective effect and all those who had these number of kids between the year 2005 to 2015 can claim the money.”

He added, “Central government should bring a law forcing Muslims to marry only one woman as Hindus do, or their rights to vote should be taken away in case they have more than two children.”

8. ‘Compulsory Sterilization’ of Muslims

The Shiv Sena wants a ‘compulsory sterilization’ of Muslims. And again, the statement came from the now secular Shayari expert Sanjay Raut in an editorial for Saamna in 2015. “Sadhvi Deva says that the increasing population of Muslims and Christians is dangerous for the country and they should be, therefore, forcibly sterilised. She should have used the word family planning instead sterilisation,” the editorial said. Quite clearly, the Shiv Sena does not have a problem with ‘forced sterilization’, it only wants it to be called family planning because it likes the term better.

The Sena added, “Sadhvi is not as educated as the Owaisi brothers (of AIMIM), thus may have chosen wrong words to convey her message. One can ignore her sterilisation words, but the fact is, their (Muslim, Christian) population and family planning remain a problem.” “Family planning will ensure that one can look after his family properly and provide quality education to children,” it said. “When we say Muslims should undergo sterilisation, our intention is that they should live happily,” Sena added.

.“If Mr Owaisi saheb cares so much about the development of his community, he should promote family planning and ban the burkha for women,” Sanjay Raut said in the editorial. “We are wasting our time in a silly argument of vasectomy or family planning. If Muslim leaders can’t manage anything else, they should at least save the nation by a vasectomy of their own communal thoughts,” he stated. The Shiv Sena repeated its demand for compulsory sterilization in 2018.

9. Hindus need to become Human Bombs: Shiv Sena

The Shiv Sena in an editorial in 2015 in Saamna asserted that Hindus should become ‘Human Bombs’ and invade Pakistan. In the editorial, it also glorified Bal Thackeray for the stands he took in his life and made numerous controversial remarks.

The party said, “Hindus should be able to live in this country with pride and his (a Hindu’s) voice should roar like that of a lion. If an answer has to be given to Pakistan extremists, Hindus will also have to become highly religious.” “To answer Pakistan, Hindus need to become human bombs and invade their country,” it went on to say.

Speaking of Bal Thackeray, it said, “If his stand that Pakistani extremists should be responded in their own terms can be called as terrorism, then this kind of terrorism was in the national interest.”

10. Nathuram Godse a patriot: Shiv Sena

The Shiv Sena in 2010 hailed Nathuram Godse as a patriot and slammed the Congress and the NCP for objecting to a souvenir by a Marathi Literary event that featured Godse. The Sena said that Nathuram had not come from Italy and was angered by the partition of the country and the genocide that Hindus suffered.

Read: Rahul Gandhi and Congress ally with ‘terrorist sympathizers’ in Maharashtra: Read to know how

“Those who hate Nathuram are in love with Ishrat. Do they want Ishrat’s photo to be published in the souvenir instead of that of Nathuram?” “He always stood for united India. Is it anti-national to harbour such feelings? He was a real patriot,” the editorial stated.

“Of course, it would have been alright if it was not there. But just because it was mentioned, there was no reason for the Congress or the NCP to get so upset. No one glorified Nathuram as the assassin of Gandhiji in the souvenir,” it said.

Congress needs to answer

When the Shiv Sena was in an alliance with the BJP, it was common for the Congress-friendly mainstream media and the party itself to demand answers from the BJP and demonize the party for every stand that the Shiv Sena took. Now that the Shiv Sena is in an alliance with the Congress party, it’s only fair that it clarifies its stance on the remarks that the Shiv Sena has made over the years. Failure to clarify stand on these statements made by Shiv Sena would only reveal how apathetic the Congress party really is towards Secularism and that it only cares about power, not ideals.

NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal says Sharad Pawar will decide who becomes deputy CM

On Thursday, senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal stated that the decision on the post of Deputy Chief Minister in the newly formed government in the state of Maharashtra will be decided by party supremo Sharad Pawar.

Reportedly, senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal said that the Governor of Maharashtra has given the alliance time till December 4 to prove their majority in the house and decision on the post of Deputy CM will be made before that deadline.

There are speculations that former Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, the nephew of Sharad Pawar could be the Deputy CM in the Uddhav Thackeray-led government in Maharashtra. However, Ajit Pawar will not be taking oath alongside Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday at Shivaji Park in Mumbai.

Earlier, there were also reports stating that the NCP was demanding the Chief Minister’s seat for two and a half years from Shiv Sena as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra.

Ajit Pawar, who enjoys a considerable amount of support within the party, only next to party chief Sharad Pawar, has also been lobbying for the post of deputy chief minister in the Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP coalition government. In a dramatic turn of events, Ajit Pawar had even taken the risk of supporting the Devendra Fadnavis led BJP government last week. However, he had backed off from the decision after he failed to garner sufficient numbers to support the BJP coalition.

Senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal also confirmed that he will take oath as minister on Thursday evening in the new Maharashtra government of the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress alliance. Along with Bhujbal, senior NCP leader Jayant Patil will take oath on Thursday. Six ministers, two each from all three parties, will be sworn in today.

“NCP chief Sharad Pawar saheb has chosen two MLAs from the party to take oath as ministers and I am one of them. I will take oath as minister today evening,” Bhujbal said.

Speaking at an event organised in Pune to mark the death anniversary of social reformer Jyotiba Phule, Bhujbal said that no decision has been made on allocation of portfolios to the new ministers. He added that NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and other senior leaders from the party will decide on the portfolio issue.

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray is all set to swear in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra later today. On Tuesday, Maharashtra Governor Koshyari had invited the new alliance ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’ to form a government under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray.

Earlier, the BJP, which had won 105 seats in the 288-member Maharashtra assembly, had formed a government in Maharashtra. However, they fell short of 40 MLAs to prove a majority. The BJP had relied on Ajit Pawar to bring in NCP MLAs. However, the political gamble failed as Ajit Pawar shied away from supporting the BJP led government at the last moment.

Greater Noida: Hindu Yuva Vahini’s former district VP murdered, friends under suspicion

0

Sandeep Nagar, the former district Vice-President of Hindu Yuva Vahini, and a resident of Atta Gujran in Dankore police station area of Greater Noida was found murdered by some unknown miscreants last night.

As the news spread the area became tense. The police reached the spot after receiving information, took the body in their possession and sent it for postmortem. The police opined that the preliminary investigations revealed that Nagar was murdered by someone known to him. Police said that the investigations were on and things would unfold soon.

According to the police, one of Sandeep’s cousins and one of his acquaintances had gone to his house to pick him up on Tuesday night. The next morning, Sandeep’ dead body was found lying a short distance away from his house. Sandeep’s body was tied and dumped there, said the police. Though the police are still not certain as to what was the motive behind the murder, it said that every aspect was being investigated. They have not yet ruled out the possibility of a political or personal conspiracy behind the crime.

According to the vitim’s father Veeru Nagar, one of Sandeep’s friends and their relative Rohit had borrowed Rs 10 lakhs from him some months ago and was reluctant to return it. On the night before the murder, Rohit and his friend Rinku Bhadana has come to meet Sandeep and had taken him away in an SUV, promising to return the money.

Veeru Nagar has named Rohit, his father Chaman and Rinku Bhadana in his complaint. Veeru had claimed that Rohit had planned the murder to avoid returning the borrowed sum.

The police confirmed that beer bottles were recovered from the crime scene. They also said that according to the investigations so far, it was confirmed that the murderer was not a stranger for Sandeep.

The district media incharge of the Hindu Yuva Vahini Harish Sharma met the police and demanded a speedy inquiry into the matter. The deceased Sandeep is said to be a good friend of the accused persons and also used to spend a lot of time with them, often for days. Meanwhile, an inspector from Dankaur police station, Akhilesh Pradhan confirmed that a case has been filed and police are investigating the matter.

Sonia Gandhi to not attend Uddhav Thackeray swearing-in ceremony, writes letter about ‘threats to country’ from BJP

Uddhav Thackeray is all set to become the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The swearing-in ceremony is set to take place at Shivaji Park today. Shiv Sena had broken its alliance with the BJP after the Maharashtra elections and allied with Congress and NCP in order to become the Chief Minister. Now, Sonia Gandhi has written a letter to Uddhav Thackeray regretting that she will not be able to attend the swearing-in ceremony.

Letter written by Sonia Gandhi to Uddhav Thackeray

Sonia Gandhi, the interim President of the Congress party wrote to Uddhav Thackeray saying that though Aditya Thackeray invited her, she will not be able to attend the swearing-in ceremony.

Interestingly, in the letter, Sonia Gandhi goes on to talk about the dangers of the BJP. She writes that Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP have come together under “extraordinary circumstances” at a time when the country “faces unprecedented threats from the BJP”. She writes that the political atmosphere has become “poisonous” and that the BJP has ruined the economy. She also talks about the distress being faced by farmers.

Read: Shiv Sena agrees to uphold ‘secular values’, work for ‘minorities’ in Maharashtra: Read details of Common Minimum Program

Shiv Sena agrees to uphold ‘secular values’, work for ‘minorities’ in Maharashtra: Read details of Common Minimum Program

The Maharashtra drama finally seems to be coming to an end with the Congress, Shiv Sena and NCP alliance being sworn in today to lead the state. Uddhav Thackeray of the Shiv Sena is all set to become the Chief Minister of Maharashtra after ditching its long-time alliance partner, BJP, for the post of CM. The three parties have now come out with the Common Minimum Program (CMP) on how the three parties will run Maharashtra. Interestingly, the CMP vows to uphold ‘secular’ values of the constitution.

The preamble of the CMP asserts that the alliance between Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP will uphold “secular” values of the constitution.

CMP Page 1

The Preamble of the CMP says that the alliance of Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP are committed to upholding the “secular values” of the Constitution. It also says that on contentious issues that affect either the “secular fabric of the nation”, the three parties will take a “joint view” after holding consultations.

It is worthy to remember here that the term “secular” was one of the points holding up the discussions of an alliance between Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP. Now that the word “secular” has found its way into the CMP, it appears that Shiv Sena conceded to the NCP, Congress demand in its quest to plant Uddhav Thackeray as the CM in Maharashtra.

Further, the CMP mentions immediate loan waiver to farmers, something that Congress party has not been successful in doing in the states it is currently ruling, namely, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Chhatisgarh.

CMP page 2

One of the most contentious promises in the CMP is that the Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP have promised to enact a law that ensures 80% reservation in jobs for local and domicile youth. The CMP does not make clear whether this reservation would only be limited to government undertakings or extend even to private entities. Several provisions for women and urban development have also been promised.

CMP Page 3

Instead of the 300 sq ft tenements being provided currently, the CMP promises to provide 500 sq ft tenements to eligible slum dwellers free of cost.

Interestingly, the Common Minimum Program decided upon by Shiv Sena, in its need to grab power, also promises that the government will adopt “various schemes to eliminate social, educational and economic backwardness of the minority community” and “implement Constitutional safeguards for its security welfare and letter and spirit”. What these schemes or safeguards are to be, is not clarified in the CMP.

CMP page 4

One of the only demands of Shiv Sena that seem to have found mention in the CMP is providing food for common people at Rs. 10.

The Shiv Sena which used to be an erstwhile Hindutva party has today become a part of a CMP which essentially furthers socialism and panders to minorities. It has also conceded to be a part of a “secular” government. How the government functions on essential issues of national security remains to be seen.

Oxford-educated Imran Khan says trees give oxygen at night, Twitter goes LOL

However dull or mundane a day might be turning out to be, the Parody country Pakistan has never failed to give the Twitter users their regular dose of entertainment. This time the Prime Minister Imran Khan himself took up the responsibility, starting a laugh riot on social media after claiming in a speech that trees produce oxygen at night.

While addressing an event linked to a scholarship drive that assists students from low-income families on Tuesday, the Imran Khan said, “Darakht raat mein oxygen dete hain (trees produce oxygen during the night)”.

A 15-second video clip, which was shared by the Pakistani journalist Naila Inayat yesterday on Twitter, saw Imran Khan giving his audience a completely new lesson in biology. He could be heard saying: “70 feesad jo green cover tha, vo kum hua, 10 saalo ke andar. Uske natayaj to aane the, kyunki drakht hawa ko saaf karte hai, oxygen dete hai raat ko. Carbon dioxide ko absorb karte hai. (70 per cent of the green cover has been cut down in the last decades. We will have to face the repercussions of that because trees clean the air, they give out oxygen in the night. The trees also absorb Carbon dioxide.)”

This goof-up costed the Pakistan Prime Minister dearly, as it opened up the Pandora’s box on the micro-blogging site, where many mocked him for his “new scientific discoveries”.

Bowing to his undisputed knowledge, few demanded a Nobel prize for the Oxford graduate.

Few took to the microblogging site and shared the chapter on photosynthesis in plants from a 7th standard biology textbook, mocking him for not studying the subject in school.

It is pertinent to note here, the ‘Einstein’ Khan (as the twitter users preferred to prefix him after the buffoonery) had recently mocked Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, for stating that flooding occurs due to heavy rainfall. “Bilwal has startled scientists worldwide by saying ‘jab barish hoti hai to pani ata hai’ (water pours when it rains),” Khan was quoted as saying.

Read: It is time for India to be worried: Chief Justice of Pakistan has a new chemical formula for water

Pakistan is known for such pearls of wisdom. Earlier the former Chief Justice of Pakistan had claimed that the chemical formula of water is ‘H-2-zero’.

Pakistan’s science minister had recently claimed that he is working on making internet services available in Jammu and Kashmir via satellite.

Twitterati was quick to remind the PM that he should revise his own knowledge of science before mocking others.

While the ghost of ‘spirit of constitution’ haunts again, here is how it was murdered and buried in Karnataka post May 2018

You might be wondering why I am writing about Karnataka at a time when there is so much drama happening in Maharashtra! “Spirit of the Constitution” is the buzz phrase these days and is being only applied to the BJP in Maharashtra. This set me thinking on what a good example would be to discuss more in detail about “spirit of the constitution”. Turns out, Karnataka, post-May 2018 is the perfect example of discussing this.

The Congress party was ruling Karnataka at the time of going to elections in May 2018. The people of Karnataka booted the Congress party out of power– the verdict was unambiguous on that front. The ambiguity of the verdict lay in the fact that no single party got a simple majority. The BJP fell short of just 8 seats of a simple majority. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 104 seats. And JD(S) party ended up with 37 seats.

Innumerable precedents and “spirit of constitution” demanded that the single largest be called for forming of the government. The Congress party, which was rejected by the people of Karnataka announced support to the also-ran JD(S). Combinedly, they had the necessary numbers for forming the government in Karnataka. Someone, please explain to me how the coming together of two rejected parties is in the “spirit of the constitution”? Someone, please point to me all the different editorial and op-eds that call out this chicanery of the Congress party?

Read: Karnataka: HD Kumaraswamy cries once again ahead of by-polls, says running coalition govt with Congress was not easy

Once Supreme Court ordered for an immediate floor test, Yediyurappa resigned. And a Cong-JD(S) government was formed in direct contradiction to the “spirit of the constitution”. Yet, we had media celebrating the fact that all opposition parties have come together on one stage. And were also busy berating the BJP for having an obsession for power!

While in power, the Chief Minister H.D.Kumaraswamy literally cried once saying that he is swallowing poison (referring to the troubles the Congress party was creating for him), and has bemoaned multiple times the problems he is facing. What “spirit of Constitution” allows an alliance partner to make the leader of the alliance literally cry in anguish?

The people of Karnataka gave a very resounding verdict in favour of the BJP and against the JD(S)-Congress alliance in the 2019 LS elections. The people were the ones who actually upheld the “spirit of the constitution”. Quite expectedly, these results resulted in churn in the JD(S) and the Congress party. MLAs had begun to rebel, at which point the English media got activated again. Messages were flowing left and right on how the BJP is “poaching” MLAs.

Read: Internal sabotage and poor ticket distribution probable cause of BJP failing to secure a majority in Karnataka?

Under these circumstances, what is the right thing to do? 1. The rebel MLAs should resign, go back to the people explaining why they did it, and seek their verdict again. Or 2. The rebel MLAs don’t resign, change party affiliation and then enjoy power?

There will be an overwhelming consensus on Option 1. There will also be an overwhelming consensus that (1) never happens and (2) often happens. So when MLAs opt for (1), they are obviously upholding the “spirit of the constitution”. This is exactly what the 17 MLAs who rebelled did. They resigned.

We were all witness to the efforts Congress made to get back these MLAs to their fold. Upon failing to do so, the Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly disqualified the 17 MLAs citing defection! Instead of accepting their resignations, the Speaker decides to disqualify them. “Spirit of Constitution” indeed. Not only that, he disqualifies them for even contesting elections till 2023! No Speaker has this power – of disqualifying citizens from contesting elections on any pretext. Yet, we did not see opinions on how the “spirit of Constitution” was being destroyed by the Congress party.

With the Assembly short of 17 members, the BJP obviously has a majority. Rightfully, they were called to form the government which they did. The disqualified MLAs went to the Supreme Court, which upheld their contention that they cannot be disqualified from contesting elections.

So let’s summarize this now. Two highest courts of the land – the people’s court and the Supreme Court – have both slapped the Congress party hard. Both did so, for violating the “spirit of constitution” and the letter of the constitution. On multiple counts. Karnataka is the best example of how one party upheld the “spirit of constitution” to the fullest and how one party abused the same. Yet the English media never highlights this abuse by the Congress party.

The by-polls for these 17 seats are scheduled on the 4th of December. The people are supreme and will speak again. If they give BJP the requisite majority, we will perhaps again see articles on how “money power” played a role in them winning!

Any philosophy which describes Godse as a ‘patriot’ is condemnable, Gandhi is our ‘margdarshak’: Rajnath Singh

Amidst the controversy over BJP MP Pragya Thakur’s alleged praise for Nathuram Godse, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday clarified that the BJP condemns any philosophy which describes Nathuram Godse as a ‘patriot’.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Union Defence Minister and senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh also said that the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi was, is and will remain relevant and described him as a guide (margdarshak) for the nation.

Rajnath Singh’s comments came after Congress and other opposition members raked up remarks made on Godse by BJP MP Pragya Thakur in the House on Wednesday.

On Thursday, opposition members strongly protested against the remarks made by BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur during the debate in the parliament. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today went on to call BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya Thakur a ‘terrorist’ after she had allegedly praised Nathuram Godse by calling him a patriot.

A controversy had erupted over the alleged remarks made by Bhopal MP Sadhvi Pragya Thakur after she had referred to the Nathuram Godse, the assassin of MK Gandhi as a “deshbhakt” (patriot) during a debate in Lok Sabha.

Sadhvi Pragya Thakur’s response came after DMK member A Raja had cited a statement of Godse on why he killed MK Gandhi during a discussion on the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill. Responding to Raja, Thakur had reportedly interrupted to say, “You cannot give the example of a deshbhakt.”

The statements made by Sadhvi Pragya Thakur had triggered an outrage in the Parliament on Wednesday. Opposition members of the Lok Sabha protested against Pragya Thakur’s remarks, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said only the DMK leader’s speech during the discussion on the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill will go on record.

Later, Thakur had clarified that she was referring to Udham Singh when she made the statement.

“The topic that was discussed was of security and A Raja spoke about ‘deshbhakt’ Udham Singh. He said that Udham Singh nursed a grudge against General Dyer of Jallianwala Bagh massacre for 20 years before killing him. When Raja went on speaking, I interrupted to say that he should not take the name of patriots – ‘Deshbhakto ka naam mat lijiye’,” she said.

Following the controversy, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur has been removed from a key parliamentary panel a day after she allegedly described Nathuram Godse, as a patriot during Lok Sabha proceedings. Last week, BJP MP from Bhopal Pragya Singh Thakur was nominated to the 21-member Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Defence headed by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur joined the BJP formally early this year and went on to win the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Bhopal. The NIA had given her a clean chit in the Malegaon Blasts case in 2016 after years of brutal torture in prison.

It is widely believed that Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur was one of the victims of the Congress party’s attempt to invent Hindu Terror. However, Sadhvi Pragya was granted bail in April 2017 after she was jailed for eight long years. Her legal representative said in an exclusive interview to OpIndia.com that she should have been granted bail in half an hour based on the circumstances of the case. We were further told that there was no credible evidence against her.
