Dear Gulbadin Naib, sometimes you don’t need to lead from the front

Afghanistan Cricket Captain Gulbadin Baib has tried to do everything in this tournament for them. He has opened the batting, he has opened the bowling, he has tried to anchor the innings, he has tried to be aggressive at the top, he has bowled in the first power play, he has bowled in the last power play, and with one of their most famous wins in sight against Pakistan, he ended up doing too many things when he should have been fielding at deep midwicket against his spinners.

Coming to the match itself, Pakistan’s encounter against Afghanistan was supposed to be a comfortable win for the resurgent Pakistan side. They had beaten South Africa and New Zealand in back to back games, the other results had gone their way to push them towards a Semifinal spot, they were supposed to just turn up against a struggling Afghanistan side and cruise to an easy 2 points. However, it is Pakistan team we are talking about so they played with the emotions of their fans all the way through before finally getting over the line.

When Afghanistan were restricted to 227 in their 50 overs, the game looked to be going as per the script. Then Pakistan suffered a jolt in the very first over of their chase when the excellent Mujeeb trapped Fakhar Zaman plumb in front. That looked like a minor bump on the road as Imam ul Haq and the prolific Babar Azam put on a 72 runs partnership quite comfortably. The veteran Mohammed Nabi then turned things around by dismissing both of them in quick succession dragging back the scoring rate.

Hafeez and Haris Sohail found scoring very difficult against the rampant Afghan spinners before Hafeez gifted his wicket to Mujeeb and Sohail was trapped in front by Rashid. Then came a decisive moment in the game when Rashid trapped Imad in front but the umpire shook his head, Afghanistan were out of reviews and had to pay the price for wasting a review early on. They were still well in the game when Sarfaraz was too slow in between the wickets and was caught short of his ground with the target still 72 runs away. Imad and Shadab Khan nudged the ball around against the relentless spinners to get the equation to 46 off 30 balls.

With 2 overs each remaining from Rashid Khan and Shinwari, and one remaining from Mujeeb, everyone watching the game was expecting the spinners to close things out on a turning track. However, Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib has other plans. The captain had conceded nearly 6 RPO till that point, he didn’t need to bring himself on, but the man wanted to lead from the front as his side chased a historic win.

The over went horribly wrong though, a full toss was smashed past square leg for 4, a miscue ended in no man’s land for a couple, another couple to deep midwicket, an edged boundary followed by a smashing shot past point for 4. A wide at this point was inevitable, before Gulbadin finally got a ball in the right place to concede just 1 off the last ball but by then the game was over.

Afghanistan had a glimmer of hope when Shadab was run out thanks to an excellent throw from the captain himself from the deep but the new man, Wahab Riaz, continued his good batting form in this tournament by smashing a couple of boundaries to hasten the end.

The spinners still fought gamely and set up a final over with 6 runs required and 3 wickets in hand. Everyone expected Shinwari to turn up with the ball as a last ditch effort, but it was the redemption chasing Captain Gulbadin Naib, who once again decided to take responsibility. Things only got worse for Naib as he fluffed a gentle throw to miss a chance to run out Imad, and conceded an overthrow in the process as well. Imad celebrated the reprieve by smashing the next ball to the boundary to clinch a remarkable win for his side and keep the spirit of 1992 alive. For Gulbadin, it was a day when he realized that sometimes it is better to take a step back and let others do the job instead of trying to do everything as a Captain.

Cricket World Cup match preview – India v England: A do or die situation for England

The pre-tournament favourites England has now the problem of plenty to reach the semi-final after Pakistan beat Afghanistan and currently sitting at number 4 position in the points table.

It is now certain that Australia, India and New Zealand have booked their place in the semis. England has 8 points, and they are one point behind Pakistan but have one more game than Pakistan in the tournament.

India, which has secured a place in the semi-final could try its bench strength in this game. The Indian middle order is weak, and that’s why they can rest Shankar and play either Pant or Karthik to access the condition and get some match practice before the knockout game. This will help them to cope in the middle order in real match conditions. If they do well, India will be all ready for the knock-out rounds. They are unbeaten in the tournament and would like to win the remaining two to keep the momentum going.

England has been playing poorly off late in the tournament and desperate to win the game to prove a point to their fans and critics who have been very severe in their criticism after back to back losses in the tournament. The would-be hoping a fit Jason Roy before the match as his absence has dented the top order severely.

England lost three games chasing the target so they should avoid chasing, especially against the Indian bowling which is the best in the World right now.

Players to watch out

Shami, the hat-trick man and the highest wicket taker of World Cup for India in the ongoing competition. The team again would want him to provide the early breakthrough and support Bumrah in the death overs. His swings have become a mystery for many batsmen in the tournament, and that will help the Indian team to restrict the opposition on a low total.

Joe Root, the highest scorer for England in the tournament has to pitch in and provide stability in the middle overs. The others can play around him, but he needs to stay at wicket as long as possible. Otherwise, England could be eliminated on Sunday only.

Uttar Pradesh: Muslim families in Shamli ‘migrate’, police calls it a pressure tactic to avoid action in a dispute

Recently the reports of an exodus of some Muslim families in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh have been doing the rounds in the media. According to reports, more than half a dozen Muslim families living in Mohalla Thatheraan Lahori Gate have sold off their houses and have started migrating to other places. Some have written ‘Ye makaan bikau hai‘ (This house is up for sale) on their houses.

Putting the blame of their exodus on the police, the families have accused the police of being biased and taking action against them on false charges in a dispute that happened earlier this month. This dispute that led to the alleged migration of the Muslim families actually took place on June 6, a day after Eid when one person named Taufeeq along with three others got involved in a fight with a Hindu Yuva Vahini worker (according to some reports, Bajrang Dal worker) Harsh and others.

Police have filed a complaint against more than half a dozen identified persons and a case against 20-25 unidentified persons has also been registered. Eleven arrests have been made so far in the case and the rest will be made on the basis of the video recording of the incident.

However, the Superintendent of Police (SP) Shamli, Ajay Kumar has termed the exodus of the Muslim families a sham and a pressure tactic to intimidate the police into not taking action against the culprits. He said that the exodus of the families is a thought out plan to avoid arrests in connection with the June 6 incident.

Earlier this month, a group of Muslim youths attacked two Bajrang Dal workers, seriously injuring them over the issue of ‘Momos’. It is also reported that a mob Muslims gathered up to beat up police personnel and managed to rescue their arrested friend.

According to the reports, a group of Muslim men, Sajid, Abid and Taufeeq had come to Ajudhya Chowk of the city to have Momos. Two Bajrang Dal workers – Himanshu and Harsh, were also present at the spot. Soon, a war of words took place at the spot, which later turned violent. The Muslim youth were soon joined by a group of their associates, who thrashed Himanshu and Harsh leaving them seriously injured.

As Bajrang Dal workers were attacked, several others present at the market stood for their support and rescued them. They also informed the local police regarding the incident.

The local police reached the spot and tried to arrest one of the attackers. However, as per a report, another group of Muslims allegedly got mobilised at the spot trying to the get the arrested man freed. During the incident, even some police officials were attacked by the group and had their uniforms torn off.

The police have now urged the culprits to follow the law and surrender either in the police station or the court. Assuring fair action, SP Shamli said that the police will act as per law and based on the existing evidence.

Video and Stats Highlight from Afghanistan and Pakistan match

One can learn how to lose a match from winning a position from Afghanistan. Afghanistan has lost the third game in the tournament where they were in the winning position. The blame for the loss in this game goes to their captain Gulbadin Naib who bowled an over which changed the result of the match.

After winning the toss, Afghanistan opted to bat first. They looked positive from the beginning even though they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Rahmat Shah (35), Asghar Afghan (42) and Najibullah Zardan (42) scored the bulk of the runs for Afganistan. Afghanistan’s innings finished at 227 for 9 in 50 overs. Shaheen Afridi took four wickets for 47 while Wahab and Imad took two each.

Pakistan had a terrible start as they lost Fakhar Zaman on the second ball of the innings. However, Imam and Babar added 72 runs for the second wicket. Pakistan was cruising to a comfortable victory, but they lost too many wickets in the middle overs, which added extra pressure on the lower order.

The required run rate went above seven runs per over as the Afghanistani spinners bowled brilliantly and kept the pressure on the incoming lower-order batsman. However, the captain Gubadin Naib bowled the 46th and most expensive over of the match and released the pressure from Pakistan. He bowled full tosses and half volleys and allowing to score them freely. Imad Wasim took the maximum advantage of his bowling and won the match for his team. Imad Wasim was also adjudged Man of the Match for his unbeaten 49 and two wickets in the game.

STATS

  • Shaheen Shah Afridi is the first teenager in the Cricket World Cup history to take four wickets in a game.
  • Wahab Riaz has 34 wickets in the World Cup. The only Pakistan bowler with more wickets in the tournament history is Wasim Akram (55).

‘Naya Pakistan’: Fans invade the field, clash with Afghanistan fans during Cricket World Cup match

The ‘Naya’ Pakistan is not anything new and still behaving like an arrogant kid who misbehaves with everyone after losing a game. Here Pakistan did not even lose the match, but still, its fans acted like spoilt brat teenagers.

Invading the pitch and clash between the fans is not new in any sports, but in cricket, you will always find Pakistan fans as one of the sides involved in such miscreants.

In the game against Afghanistan, the fight broke out after an aircraft, flying over the ground, displayed a ‘Justice For Balochistan‘ message on a banner. Fans from either the side punched each other inside and outside the stadium.

As soon as the match got over, some fans invaded the pitch, breached the security and heckled the Afghans players.

Pakistani fans have a history of heckling players during the games. In one the incidents, in 1989 a fan tore the Indian skipper, Kris Srikant’s shirt in a test match, another incident happened in 1992 when India and Pakistan players went to London to play a charity match for Imran Khan’s cancer hospital and match called off after the fans invaded the field and punched each other on the pitch.

BCCI threatened Indian players with suspension for participating in any charity game after, as in one of the charity match, the national flag of India was burnt by Pakistani fans. Things have not changed; they are still the same, and so as the Pakistani fans.

Geopolitical tensions have been high between Kabul and Islamabad. The two countries are divided by a porous border, the Durand Line, which was drawn up in 1893 between Afghanistan and British India.

The ugly side of Pakistanis’ ‘humour’: Twitter users trend ‘#PakistanvsNamakharams’ for Afghanistan

Remember the ‘India wins the match and Pakistan won the twitter’ drama after India Pakistan clash on June 16? How did the Indian liberals tell us to learn humour and sportsmanship from Pakistan?

Well, it all was a myth, the real face of Pakistani fans behind a few humorous tweets has been exposed time and again. And over and above, this was just a game against Afghanistan, who is placed at the bottom of the points table.

The #PakistanvHaramkhor trend was ranked second on Pakistan Twitter trends; such is the hate for their neighbours. All these hate against Afghanistan was started by former Pakistani pacer Shoaib Akhtar on his youtube account.

After watching the video, many Pakistani fans started the hashtag Pakistan v Haramkhor and started abusing, degrading the Afghanistan people and fans on Twitter. They even dragged India in between even when India was not playing.

The fans stooped to such a low level that they even dragged the Afghan women fans for their clothing.

If this was not enough, some of them brought Imad’s girlfriend (who is an Afghan) into the picture, showing how ugly they can be as a fan.

The real story is that Imad Wasim cheated on her afghan girlfriend and she exposed him for his fake promises after Imad refused to marry her. Imad Wasim first denied that he knows the woman but later when the Afghan woman shared WhatsApp chat and hotel bills, Imad accepted that he knew the girl.

Imad Wasim adjudged man of the match for his all-round performance in the game against Afghanistan. He took two wickets and made the crucial unbeaten 49 runs for the team.

The fans named and shamed the players. If the liberals are still calling the other side of the border as humorous and sportsmanship, we better never have such humour and sportsmanship. If you want to see more such tweets then login to twitter and just search #PakistanvHaramkhors.

Congress in dire straits as resignation spree continues unabated, UP Congress leaders resign now

Congress is currently reeling under a crisis as its leaders across the country are tendering their resignation from the official positions they have held in the party. The precipitous response from office bearers of various Congress affiliates such as Youth Congress, Mahila Congress, AICC and PCC comes days after Congress President Rahul Gandhi expressed his angst over Congress leaders being nonchalant with the poll rout and not owning up the responsibility of the loss.

After Rajasthan Co-Incharge and AICC secretary, Tarun Kumar and Congress leader Nana Patole tendered their resignation today, another fresh wave of Congress leaders have submitted their resignation from the positions they held. Now, the UP Congress senior vice president Ranjit Singh Jude, general secretary Aradhna Mishra Mona and vice president RP Tripathi along with 10 other leaders have resigned from the party taking moral responsibility for party’s defeat in Lok Sabha.

Yesterday, a mass resignation letter was doing the rounds on the Internet in which about 140 Congress office bearers had signed the resignation letter which read- “I would like to immediately resign from my post in respect and honour of Rahul Gandhi.” Rahul Gandhi had earlier offered to resign from his post of Congress president taking moral responsibility of the poll debacle. The CWC had unanimously rejected his resignation, however, the Congress president has been insistent on resigning from his position.

Kedarnath Dhyan Gufa witnesses a historic rise in the number of pilgrims after PM Modi’s visit

The cave at the Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand has witnessed an unprecedented hike in the number of devotees visiting it ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi meditated in the cave in the month of May this year after the Lok Sabha election campaign. The numbers of devotees logging into the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) website every day for online booking have increased manifold.

As per the information provided by GMVN Manager B L Rana, the meditation cave, also called ‘Dhyan Gufa‘ has been booked for the whole of July in advance and there are also advance bookings for various dates in the months of August, September, and October.

Looking at the increasing popularity of the Gufa after PM Modi’s visit, the district administration is planning three more caves in its vicinity. “We are planning to build three more such caves close to the existing one. In fact, work on one has already started and the sites for the other two on the surrounding hills have also been identified”, Rudraprayag DM, Mangesh Ghildiyal said.” The people started showing interest in the Gufa only after PM Modi meditated there though it has been in existence for around a year now, he said.

Apart from the Prime Minister’s visit, better facilities have also contributed to this historic rise in the number of devotees with 7,62,000 devotees having already visited the temple in fifty days this year. “The number of pilgrims visiting Kedarnath during the entire yatra season last year was 7,32,000. There are more than three months to go for the end of the yatra sometime in October, and we hope the number this time is all set to cross the 10 lakh mark. It will be the first time in the history of Kedarnath”, said Ghildiyal.

The photo of PM Modi meditating in the Dhyan Gufa wearing a saffron shawl had become a hit on the social media.

Shoaib Akhtar’s racist rant against Afghan cricket players: Insinuates they are ‘refugees from Peshawar’

Former Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar, whose entire career was focussed not on the quality of his bowling but in attempts to outrun racing vehicles, had launched a racist, hateful rant against the Afghan cricketers in a YouTube video.

A crucial match between Afghanistan and Pakistan, where Afghanistan has nothing to lose but which Pakistan desperately needs to win to survive in the tournament, is underway today. Shoaib Akhtar had shared a video where he was seen deriding the Afghan players and even giving racist, hateful remarks against them.

In the video, Akhtar is seen saying that it is good that Afghani players have found ‘home grounds’ in Dehradun and Noida. He further states that India has invested a lot in training Afghani cricket players but what they could not teach them was ‘sense of maturity’.

Ironically, Akhtar, displaying an amazing lack of maturity himself, further states that if the ID cards of the team members of Afghanistan are checked, it may be found that many of them belong to Peshawar. He insinuated that Afghans are the refugees in Pakistan and they are going to be crushed tomorrow. He also stated that because the Afghan players may all be refugees from Peshawar, if a serious document check is performed, their team might get banned.

Akhtar’s racist rant against a neighbouring country was slammed by many on Twitter.

During today’s match, there was also a scuffle between the fans of Afghanistan and Pakistan at Leeds stadium. It is reported that an aeroplane with a flying slogan “Justice For Balochistan” was seen during the match. ICC has stated that

Watch: Pakistan and Afghanistan fans get into a fight after plane with ‘Justice for Balochistan’ slogan was spotted

Today while Pakistan and Afghanistan were playing the ICC World Cup 2019 at the Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds, fans of both teams broke into a fight outside the stadium. The fight broke out after fans spotted a plane carrying a slogan ‘Justice for Balochistan’ flying over them.

It was an unauthorized plane that had flown over them. Leeds air traffic would be investigating it.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are facing each other in the World Cup for the first time. The last time they met each other was in the World Cup warm-up game where Afghanistan won the match.
