‘Bofors ka dalal kaun hai? Rajiv Gandhi,’ How the Opposition back in the late 80s chanted ‘Rajiv Gandhi Chor Hai’

With only three phases in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections remaining, former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi has suddenly become a topic in the elections. It all began with prime minister Narendra Modi saying yesterday that Rajiv Gandhi died as Bhrashtachar number one, referring to Rahul Gandhi constantly labelling the PM as a chor.

While the opposition parties and left-liberal media constantly accuses the current Modi government to be a fascist regime without freedom of speech, the fact is that the PM and the government is constantly being attacked, labelled a thief by the very same people without any fear of retaliatory action from the government. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and all Congress leaders keep saying chowkidar chor hai, where chowkidar means PM Modi. Rahul Gandhi had even attributed this comment to the Supreme Court.

This comes in sharp contrast to how the Congress party had reacted when Rajiv Gandhi was called a chor. In 1988, a journalism professor was arrested by police, assaulted by Congress workers, for a question asked in an examination that referred to an anti-Rajiv Gandhi slogan popular at that time. Pradeep Krishnatray was the head of journalism department at the Sagar University, and the entrance test for journalism degree of the university at that year included that question which asked, “Which station of All India Radio had broadcast the sentence – ‘Rajiv Gandhi Chor Hai’?”

On May 27, during a live programme of Patna Radio Station, a girl was asked to tell a joke, and she had said, Gali Gali Mein Shor Hai, Rajiv Gandhi Chor Hai. This was a slogan used by the opposition parties during the Rajiv Gandhi government after the Bofors scam was exposed.

The question in the entrance examination created a huge reaction, with a group of youth Congress workers storming into the journalism department of Sagar University, and abusing and beating Pradeep Krishnatray. They had also painted his face blacked and paraded him around the campus.

The University authorities had charge-sheeted Krishnatray for asking the question and started an inquiry. After that, the police had taken up the case. The professor was arrested by police for indecent behaviour and insult. Not content with assaulting the professor, the Congress workers had also demanded that Krishnatray should be sacked immediately, although the vice-chancellor had refused to do so without a probe. The teachers of the university had rallied behind Krishnatray, boycotting class protesting the hooliganism of Congress workers. This had forced the police to arrest the culprits who had assaulted the professor.

Pradeep Krishnatray didn’t say anything against Rajiv Gandhi, the department under him had merely asked a question relating to a-anti-Rajiv Gandhi slogan. While today government-run TV channels like Rajya Sabha channel openly run anti-government propaganda, at that time government-run All India Radio inadvertently transmitting an anti-government slogan in a live programme was a big issue. This was also an important piece of trivia for journalism students, that’s why it was asked in the entrance examination for the journalism course, but the Congress workers wanted the scalp of the head of the department just for this.

In fact, back in the day, “Rajiv Gandhi Chor Hai” was a very popular campaign run by the opposition.

One of the most used chant at that time was ‘Gali gali mein shor hai, Rajiv Gandhi chor hai’. In fact, if reports are to be believed, when V P Singh, who resigned as the Defence Minister to lead the Opposition onslaught on Rajiv Gandhi, would ask the crowd, “Bofors ka dalal kaun hai?” Crowd would yell back, Rajiv Gandhi.

Two Indian diplomats locked up and harassed at Gurudwara in Pakistan: Reports

India has lodged a complaint with the Pakistani authorities regarding the two Indian diplomats who were allegedly locked up and harassed at Gurudwara near Lahore, Pakistan on April 17.

Reportedly, Indian authorities submitted a demarche to Pakistan’s Foreign Office recently. The demarche raised concerns about the security of the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. A separate note verbal was also sent to the Pakistan authorities on April 25, regarding the harassment meted out at the two Indian diplomats on the April 17.

The two Indian diplomats had gone to the Gurdwara Sacha Sauda Sahib in Farooqabad near Lahore for doing consular work in order to facilitate the travel of Sikh pilgrims. 15 Pakistani intelligence officers reportedly misbehaved with the diplomats. They were locked in a room, their bags were searched and they were being questioned.

There have been several incidents in the past where Indian diplomats have been harassed while trying to facilitate the travel of Sikh pilgrims to the several gurudwaras in the Punjab province. Pro-Khalistani groups have also reportedly confronted the Indian pilgrims.

India had raised the issue of harassment of its diplomats in March as well. Following the Pulwama attacks and the subsequent Balakot air strikes, at least 6 incidents of harassment of India’s Naval advisor in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, Captain Peter Varghese, was reported by the mission to Pakistan government.

India has also previously complained about the deliberate power cuts during the harsh winters in Pakistan. In November, just a day after India decided to develop and build the Kartarpur corridor, Indian diplomats were blocked from meeting the Sikh pilgrims at Gurudwara Sacha Sauda and Gurudwara Nankana Sahib in Pakistan.

PM Modi attacks Rahul Gandhi saying “Your father’s life ended as Bhrashtachari No. 1”, rattles Congress leaders

At a rally in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, PM Modi countering Rahul Gandhi’s incessant allegations on the Rafale deal said, “Your father was termed ‘Mr Clean’ by his courtiers, but his life ended as ‘Bhrashtachari No. 1′ (No. 1 corrupt person)” on Saturday.

He was referring to the Bofors scandal that came to light during Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure. Allegedly, Rajiv Gandhi and others received huge kickbacks from the artillery gun deal of the Swedish Defence manufacturer Bofors.

PM Modi had accused Rahul Gandhi of having only one objective of tarnishing his image. “By hurling abuses, you cannot dissolve the 50-long year of Modi’s tapasya (struggle) in dust,” the prime minister said.

“By tarnishing my image and by making me small, these people want to make an unstable and a weak government in the country,” he added. This comes a day before Rahul Gandhi’s constituency of Amethi is going for the polls.

Meanwhile, the Congress leaders have taken offence to PM Modi’s statement and have been outraging on Twitter. Rahul Gandhi jibed at PM Modi by saying “Your Karma awaits you”.

“Mr Modi has crossed all limits of propriety and decency by defaming a man (Rajiv Gandhi) who died in 1991,” wrote P. Chidambaram.

Priyanka Vadra had claimed that Rajiv Gandhi had died for the people of Amethi and that PM Modi was insulting the martyrdom of the former Prime Minister.

Congress leaders, P. Chidambaram and Randeep Surjewala, attempted to counter PM Modi’s claim by saying that the Supreme court had dismissed CBI’s appeal but failed to mention that the CBI hasn’t been stopped from continuing its investigations. As reported by OpIndia, new information regarding the Bofors scam has left many unanswered questions of the Gandhi families involvement in the scams.

Amethi: Man dies after being turned away for holding Ayushman Bharat card; hospital said “Yeh Yogi aur Modi ka hospital nahin”

Union Minister and BJP Lok Sabha candidate for Amethi Smriti Irani today shared a video on Twitter where a man is recounting how his uncle died after Sanjay Gandhi Hospital allegedly turned them away because they were holding an Ayushman Bharat card.

In the video, the man says in Hindi that they took their relative, an old man, to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital where they admitted him but when they took the Ayushman Bharat card, the hospital authorities allegedly said that this (Sanjay Gandhi Hospital) is Congress’ hospital, Rahul Gandhi’s hospital. “This is not Yogi or Modi’s hospital. Ayushman card is not valid here,” the hospital authorities allegedly said.

When Irani enquired about the old man’s health, he replies that he passed away on 26th itself.

The man then says one Dr Siddharth at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital turned away the ailing man and refused the treatment because of Ayushman Bharat card. He says that they pleaded to the doctor but he didn’t budge and suggested they could take the old man with them.

The Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Amethi was under the lens in 2017 too when the BJP alleged that the hospital’s guesthouse was being misused by the family and the party to hold political meetings when Rahul Gandhi is in Amethi.

Ayushman Bharat is the world’s largest state-sponsored welfare scheme in the world, which aims to provide health insurance coverage to more than 10 crore poor families in the country. As per the latest Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) data, 8.03 crore rural households and another 2.33 crore urban households will be covered under this scheme.

Through Ayushman Bharat, the Modi Government aims to provide financial protection (Swasthya Suraksha) to 10.74 crores poor, deprived rural families and identified occupational categories of urban workers’ families (approx. 50 crore beneficiaries). The number of beneficiaries is almost equal to the population of Canada, Mexico and the US taken together. The pace of implementation by the Modi Government has been particularly impressive as nearly one-fifth of beneficiary families (2.05 crore) have already been given e-cards under the scheme, which offers a benefit cover of Rs. 5,00,000 per family per year. It covers medical and hospitalization expenses for almost all secondary care and most of the tertiary care procedures.

The most ambitious project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ayushman Bharat has been receiving admiration from across the world. The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Ayushman Bharat and called it a “great commitment”.

Supreme Court says that Indian Express report on judges meeting SC panel probing charges against CJI is fake

The Supreme Court of India has said that a report published by the Indian Express today is fake. On a report about the probe into sexual harassment charges levelled against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, Indian Express had said that Supreme Court judges Justice D Y Chandrachud and Rohintan Nariman had met the inquiry panel comprising Justices S A Bobde, Indu Malhotra and Indira Banerjee on Friday evening. This in-house panel of Supreme Court is probing the allegations against CJI Gogoi.

Indian Express report saying that two judges met the SC probe panel

The report had said that Justice Chandrachud had asked the panel to not proceed with the inquiry “ex parte”. Indian Express reported that the two judges discussed their concerns about the ongoing inquiry with the panel.

Reacting to the news report, the secretary general of Supreme Court of India has issued a clarification that no such meeting took place, and the entire report by Indian Express is false. The clarification said, “It is most unfortunate that a leading newspaper has chosen to state that Justice RF Nariman and Justice DY Chandrachud together met Justice SA Bobde on Friday evening i.e on 3rd May 2019. This is wholly incorrect. The in-House committee which is deliberating on the issue concerning Hon’ble Chief Justice of India deliberates on its own without any input from any other Hon’ble judge of this Court.”

SC clarifies that Indian Express report is fake

A former employee of the Supreme Court had levelled charges of sexual molestation against CJI Gogoi, which is being probed by the panel. A few days later, advocate Utsav Basin had alleged that the charges are part of a larger conspiracy involving disgruntled former employees, lawyers, judges and corporates to fix the Supreme Court, and another bench is hearing that allegation.

Hey Tejashwi, there’s a Chowkidar on your boat

Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav today took to Twitter to share a cartoon depicting election symbols of all alliance partners in one frame with a caption “सोचा है हमने और आगे जाएंगे, साथ मिलकर भाजपा हटाएंगे।” (We have thought we will go much ahead and together defeat the BJP.)

Cartoon posted by Tejashwi Yadav

The image shows election symbols of various alliance partners together. A boatsman is holding a lantern, which is the election symbol of RJD. On a table behind him, there’s a landline phone which is the election symbol of Hindustani Awam Morcha, a party floated by Jitan Ram Manjhi. Above the table is a ceiling fan which is the election symbol of Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) and it is on a boat, which is the election symbol of Vikasshil Insan Party (VIP).

Helpful Twitter users tried to explain it to Yadav how the cartoon does not really make sense.

There’s a ceiling fan on a boat, which is not necessary because there will already be a natural breeze.

This user pointed out how the lantern and ceiling fan do not compliment each other. Lantern suggests that there is no electricity. In which case, there is no use of the ceiling fan. And if there is a functional ceiling fan, there is no real use of the lantern.

Another user pointed out how there is a landline phone without any wires.

And most amusing of them all is the fact that the boat seems to be steered by a person who is made to dress up in clothes which resemble a watchman’s uniform.

Recently, the Yadav brothers have taken to sharing cartoons and caricatures to make a point. While Tejashwi’s cartoon defies all logic, his brother Tej Pratap Yadav’s cartoons are equally strange.

Rabri Devi and Misa Bharti depicted in the image above have strange black moustache-like thing protruding from near their noses. In another such image he had shared earlier last month also had such bizarre elements.

While it appears that Rabri Devi is set on fire in the above image, one is not able to understand why is Lalu wearing an extra pair of glasses around his neck when he’s already wearing one.

There were also speculations on whether Lalu Yadav was wearing a Superman-esque underwear.

However, one tweet by a Twitter user summed up our collective feeling for the Yadav brothers.

FIR lodged against CPM Leader Sitaram Yechury for remarks on Ramayana and Mahabharata

Yesterday, yoga guru Baba Ramdev and other seers lodged an FIR against CPM Leader Sitaram Yechury for his remarks on ‘Ramayana and Mahabharata’ with SSP Haridwar.

“We have filed a complaint against Yechury, who has insulted our ancestors. It is an offence. He should be put behind the bars. We have demanded a strict investigation into the matter,” said Baba Ramdev after filing the complaint.

Speaking at an event, Sitaram Yechury had said, “Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur said that Hindus don’t believe in violence. Many kings and principalities have fought battles in the country. Even Ramayana and Mahabharata are also filled with instances of violence and battles. Being a pracharak, you narrate the epics but still claim Hindus can’t be violent? What is the logic behind saying there is a religion which engages in violence and we Hindus don’t.”

This offensive statement by him generated a lot of criticism from the BJP and Shiv Sena. The Shiv Sena demanded that he drop his name ‘Sitaram’ and even demand CPM candidate Kanhaiya Kumar to change his name.

“Ramayana and Mahabharata conveyed one central message – victory of good over evil. Sitaram Yechury’s ideology is his own. His ideology has only one objective, which is to attack Hindus and make oneself the premier secular person,” Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said.

The seers have demanded a strict investigation to be carried out as the CPM leaders remarks have hurt the sentiments of the Hindus.

The CPM leader had tried to reinforce the bogus idea of saffron terror and this time around he has sought to degrade the Ramayana and Mahabharata as well. Once again the Communists have shown their hatred towards the Hindus.

“I have no solution”: Former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit’s insensitive remark on women safety shocks all

Former Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit shocked all with her “I have no solution” remark in context to ‘women safety’ in Delhi. Ironically, Dikshit was the Chief Minister of Delhi between 1998-2013. Being a woman and the longest serving Chief Minister, her statement is not only shameful and ludicrous but appalling as well.

Dikshit, in conversation with Mirror Now, is seen to conveniently wash her hands off women safety. According to her, the Delhi government has no role to play in ensuring the safety of women as far as the police are concerned.

In the video clip, which was shared by Mirror Now on its Twitter handle, Dikshit went on to downplay the Nirbhaya case that had united the entire nation in outrage over the heinous crime. She said this case was “blown out of proportion by the media” while other cases go unnoticed. She dumped the responsibility of ensuring women safety on Delhi Police, who she said falls under the ambit of the Government of India. Instead of responding to a question, she retaliated by asking the journalist, “I would like your solutions.”

The journalist suggested that streets should be lit, CCTV cameras should be installed and bus drivers should be properly licensed and identified. However, Dikshit was quick to shrug off the responsibility of the elected representatives of the state government. She chose to shift the blame on the police and the central government.

The journalist had to remind her that the Congress-led UPA government was in power when Nirbhaya case happened.

Through the interview, Dikshit reiterated the fact that “Solutions are with the Government of India and the Parliament of India.” She refused to offer any solutions about an issue that is under her purview. As the Congress candidate from Noth East Delhi, she said if elected to the Parliament, she would “speak about it, she would mention it because she would be representing Delhi.”

The senior Congress leader clearly appears to have a made up her mind of evading answers pertaining to the safety of women in Delhi, where she ruled for a decade and a half.

Her apparent views on offering solutions to women in the state have drawn flak. Here are some of the responses that she received.

This is not the first time when Dikshit has passed a controversial remark. We had earlier reported how her comparison between Former PM Manmohan Singh and PM Narendra Modi in dealing with terrorism had irked her partymen.

Sri Lankan suicide bomber’s wife was a devout Hindu who was converted and radicalised, reveals a report by Tamil media

Sri Lankan suicide bomber Mohammad Hasthoon’s wife, Pulasthini Mahendran (some reports mention it as Pulasthini Rajendran) aka Sara who is believed to be an active participant in the recent Sri Lankan bombings, was born in a devout Hindu lower middle class family and was converted to Islam and radicalised, a report by popular Tamil channel IBC Tamizh has revealed.

As per the report, Pulasthini was born in a middle-class Hindu family in Thettativu, situated in Batticaloa district in Eastern Province in Sri Lanka and was allegedly abducted, converted to Islam and radicalised by Islamists groups.

IBC Tamizh’s interview with her mother, Kavitha Mahendran reveals that Pulasthini was a good student who was pursuing medical studies. She used to pursue traditional Tamil and Hindu religious studies in school. However, one Abdul Razik abducted Pulasthini when she was a student.

Kavitha claims that she tried to bring her daughter back, but Razik insisted that Pulasthini was ‘happy’ and that she had made an ‘informed adult decision’. A few months later, Razik called Kavitha to inform her that her daughter had ’embraced’ Islam and was married off to a man. Her husband is believed to the Mohammad Hasthoon, who was caught on camera at the St Sebastian Church bombing on Easter Sunday.

A devasted Kavitha cut off all ties with her daughter. A month after this, Kavitha claims she got a call from her distraught daughter who said she was unhappy in her life and she was on the verge of a complete breakdown. However, after this phone call, there was no contact from Pulasthini.

Around two weeks before the Easter Sunday attacks, Kavitha claims an unknown man, who identified himself as Sri Lankan intelligence officer had come looking for Pulasthini but didn’t divulge any information.

IBC report reveals that Abul Razik is actually a leader of the radical Islamic organisation, Sri Lankan Thowheed Jamaath (SLTJ) which has close ideological ties with the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaath.

ISIS had claimed responsibility for the serial blasts that shook Sri Lanka last month claiming lives of over 200 people. The sons of one of the richest and politically well-connected man were found to be two of the suicide bombers. The family is under interrogation after the wife of one of the bombers triggered another suicide blast to kill policemen in their Colombo dwelling.
