Income Tax department raids Karnataka CM Kumaraswamy’s chartered accountant

0

For the second times in the last three months the Income-tax department raided the office and home of Chartered Accountant HB Sunil in Kumara Park (West), who is a close aide and the accountant to the Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, reports Bangalore Mirror.

Although the raids started on Tuesday, sources said that Sunil was not allowed to leave his office till late in the evening on Wednesday. A Bangalore Mirror photojournalist reported of some activities in Sunil’s office, though all the lights were switched off and the gates locked.

Opindia.com spoke to the Deputy Commissioner of the department who confirmed that the raid was conducted and furthered that the department is yet to release a press note throwing light on the operation, which might be done today, later in the afternoon.

HB Sunil is said to be a trusted aide to Kumaraswamy and handles all investments made by him, his wife, Anitha Kumaraswamy who runs a TV channel named Kasturi channel and had declared assets of Rs 36 crore in 2013, and his son Nikhil’s investments also. He is even said to have handled the JD(S) party fund mobilized by Kumaraswamy during the Assembly polls.

A senior police officer, not wishing to be named, said that Sunil and one of the Chief Minister’s assistants were under the I-T radar for some time now. In fact, the officer confirmed of alerting the CM’s assistant of ‘possible raids’ by the income-tax department. Sources said that the CM’s assistant is yet to be questioned.

Sources, however, denied media reports that the Income Tax raids at Sunil’s office had anything to do with the CM and said that the chartered accountant’s premises were searched on Tuesday as part of the I-T department’s “ongoing” search and seizure operations of a multinational property developer in Bengaluru.

Several Congress leaders including DK Shivakumar, who was hailed as the ‘man of the match’ for his money and manpower which played a pivotal role in the JDS-Congress alliance government in Karnataka, and close confidantes of KJ George, MB Patil, and HC Mahadevappa have been raided by the income tax officials in recent times.

Jharkhand: Muslim mob attacks police for oppossing cow slaughter

0

Communal tension prevailed in parts of Jharkhand after beef was allegedly found despite a ban on cow slaughter in the state. As reported by Jagran, when the Police reached the spot to intervene, a mob even threw bombs on the police. As per reports, in Ranchi, a cow was being openly slaughtered. But before the police could stop it, the animal had already been killed. The police arrested on Bashir Ansari, but that led to a violent protest by the mob of villagers who gheraoed the police, pelted stones and even shouted pro-Pakistan slogans.

Even as the Police tried to contain the curfew-like situation, tensions flared in Badgai area of Ranchi. As per Jagran report, the mob even pelted stones on the police, following which Rapid Action Force was called to help contain the tension. As of now, over two dozen people are arrested and Bengal border is sealed.

However, as reported by Times of India, calm has been restored in Ranchi after the incident and efforts are on to stop spreading rumours over the incident.

This is not the first time a mob has taken law in its own hands when it comes to illegal cow slaughter. Recently, a Muslim mob running an illegal cow slaughterhouse attacked a journalist even as the Editors Guild of India remained silent on the issue.

Indian Railways to run exclusive trains for women on Rakshabandhan

0

The Indian Railways has decided to roll out special trains for women on the occasion of Rakshabandhan which will be celebrated on 26th August, Sunday.

The special trains are scheduled to run three different routes starting from New Delhi station to Palwal, Ghaziabad and Panipat on Sunday to enable the easier travel of women to meet their brothers on this special day, dedicated to the celebration of sibling relationships.

The festival celebrated every year in the month of Shrawan, is symbolised with sisters tying ‘Rakhi’ or holy thread, bracelet on the wrist of their brothers as a form an expression of deep bonding and protection.

The Indian Railways is coming up with innovative ideas to spread the Indian culture throughout the country. Recently, the Bihar Sampark Kranti Express, which travels from Darbhanga of Bihar to Delh, was decorated with the elegant Madhubani paintings of the traditional Mithila artform.

The Indian Railways has also encouraged the zonal divisions to promote the art forms of the region on trains and railway stations. Recently, the Madhubani Railway station of Bihar had grabbed national attention when the station was beautifully decorated with Madhubani paintings by local artists. Similarly, Raja ki Mandi station of the UP is depicted with ‘Ram Bharat’ paintings depicting the wedding of Lord Shri Ram and Sita mata.

Was the ‘UAE extends Rs 700 crore aid for Kerala flood’ assertion just a big fat lie?

0

The devastating floods in Kerala have now become a slugfest for settling scores for political parties camouflaging the mudslinging under the guise of being sensitive towards the flood victims. Earlier this week, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan announced in a press briefing that the UAE has ‘offered’ financial assistance of Rs. 700 crore for Kerala floods relief.

UAE pledging Rs. 700 crore aid.

Some media outlets like TheNewsMinute quoted that the same has been communicated by the UAE administration to Prime Minister Modi on 21st August regarding the same.

Statement by Pinarayi Vijayan where he claims the UAE has pledged Rs. 700 crore aid

Soon after Kerala CM’s announcement, controversies started pouring in on how a foreign country is offering Rs. 700 crore relief while the central government has offered ‘only’ Rs. 600 crore while the chief minister had requested for an immediate release of Rs. 2,000 crore to deal with the crisis.

Controversy over aid amount from Centre vs UAE

Meanwhile, it also came to light that the UAE government’s ‘offer’ was conveyed to the Kerala CM not through the government but by businessman M.A. Yusuf Ali, the owner of Lulu Supermarkets.

Kerala CM claiming how the UAE government ‘offer’ was conveyed to him by the owner of Lulu supermarket.

So, how did the Kerala CM announce the UAE government’s offer without having received any official communication from the government?

But by then, the narrative was already built. Soon, the Centre was under fire for not ‘accepting‘ the aid by the UAE government. However, such refusal was in line with the policy adopted by the previous Dr Manmohan Singh government during previous natural calamities like the 2004 Tsunami and 2013 Uttarakhand floods. In 2004, a policy was set of refusing to accept foreign aid for disasters as not only a diplomatic tool but also to enforce the self-reliance of India.

However, now the UAE government has come out and claimed that no such official announcement for the flood relief is made by the UAE on any specific amount. As reported by Indian Express, the UAE Ambassador Ahmed Albanna said that there is no official announcement so far on the specific financial aid. Albanna categorically denied the announcement of Rs. 700 crore aid.

Meanwhile, Communist Party of India, the second biggest constituent in the ruling Left Democratic Front, came down heavily on Centre for ‘rejecting’ the offer of UAE, which never came through. The CPI said if the Centre wants to reject the Rs. 7 billion offer from the UAE, it should give Rs. 26 billion interim assistance the state is asking for. CPI even accused the Centre of standing in ‘false prestige’ for not accepting the offer that was never made in the first place?

This brings out bigger questions. Who planted the fake news that the UAE government has offered financial aid? Why was the same accounced by the Kerala CM without having received any official communication? Who benefits from the political mudslinging in wake of a disaster?

CBI wants to question SIT members, say papers handed over in Saradha Chit Fund Scam manipulated : Reports

0

The Central Bureau of Investigations has written to the Director General of Police in West Bengal seeking to question members of the SIT team that investigated the Saradha Chit Fund Scam. According to reports, the CBI wants to ‘plug the gaps’ and clarify some issues that are hindering the investigation.

India Today has quoted a CBI official as saying that the investigating team of CBI thinks some of the documents handed over to them by the West Bengal police SIT were manipulated. The official has stated that the CBI wants clarity on the documents. The official has also stated that some of the documents in the investigation also appear to be missing.

The agency has written to the DGP of West Bengal seeking to question some senior IPS officers who were a part of the SIT team, all of them have been moved to handle different responsibilities since then. The CBI has asked in the letter for the former SIT members to meet the CBI officials at a place and time of their convenience between 21 to 25 August.

According to a report in Mid Day, the letter sent by the CBI mention four IPS officers who were part of the state SIT. The four officers are reportedly Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, Additional Commissioner Vineet Goel, IG Tamal Bose and former state CID chief Pallav Kanti Ghosh. According to reports, the CBI is yet to receive a reply and none of the mentioned officers have met the CBI team so far.

The Saradha Scam was brought to light in 2013. Many political leaders were connected with this Ponzi scheme that was run by a consortium of over 200 companies. The Saradha Group had reportedly collected more than 200 billion rupees from lakhs of small investors. The Group had collapsed in April 2013 and a year later, the Supreme Court of India had ordered the CBI to take over the investigation from the state SIT. Many politicians of the ruling TMC and prominent personalities were arrested for their involvement. In May this year, ED had sent a notice to UPA finance minister P Chidambaram’s wife Nalini Chidambaram for her involvement in the Saradha scam. The group’s founder Sudipto Sen and his close aide Debjani Mukherjee are in jail.

Man who wanted genocide on caste lines and India defeated by China gets job at The News Minute

0

The News Minute has started a new podcast featuring Nilakantan, ‘Puram’, where he will be in conversation with Politicians and policymakers on their vision for society among other things. The man in question, who operates under the username @puram_politics, is known for his vitriolic hatred for India in general and Brahmins in particular.

Screenshots of his tweet from 2015 are doing the rounds where he suggested that murdering people belonging to Upper castes is doing the society a favour.

The same handle has also wished for India’s military defeat at the hands of China to stop the rising tide of nationalism in the country.

The person has also made disparaging remarks against the Indian Army and claimed that the Indian Army is ‘very good at raping women.’

The person was also seen fantasizing about Narendra Modi’s assassination on Twitter.

According to some people on social media, one of @puram_politics’ earlier avatar on Twitter was ‘Nilu’. We couldn’t independently confirm these claims, however, the handle @Nilu which has since then been deleted has tweeted some pretty sexually obscene stuff.

There are also blogs dedicated to his accomplishments. Again, we can neither verify the claims in these blogs and neither do we endorse the veracity of the claims made. These blogs titled, “Will this guy ever get laid?“, “NILU – THE RETARDED B*****D IN THE BLOGWORLD” and “Nilakantan Rajaraman’s Biography“, either document his sexual obscenities or exist merely for the purpose of throwing dirt at ‘Nilu’.

Regardless of whether any of these claims made by these various blogs are true or if @puram_politics is really Nilu, there are enough tweets to prove that he is a murderous casteist bigot who has denigrated and insulted India and the Indian Army on various occasions. That The News Minute has chosen to associate themselves with such a vile person only goes to on show the depths to which the mainstream media has fallen to.

Blast at TMC office in West Midnapore, one worker killed and five others injured

0

One TMC worker was killed and five others injured in a blast at their party office in Narayangarh, West Midnapore. The deceased has been identified as Sudipta Ghosh. The injured were rushed to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital where one is said to be extremely critical.

As per initial reports, a crude bomb was responsible for the blast at Makarampur village, Narayangarh Tehsil. However, it is being said that a cylinder explosion could also have been responsible for the blast. Pradyut Ghosh, TMC MLA of Narayangarh, has said that the cause of the blast hasn’t been ascertained yet and the Police is still looking into it.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is, however, convinced that crude bombs were responsible for the blast. They claim that crude bombs were being manufactured in the building when the blast occurred. “We have been complaining to the police regularly stating that the local TMC leaders have created a team of goons [who] spread terror… Today’s incident is just a mere example. I can guarantee that all party offices of the TMC are stocked with weapons and gunpowder. TMC is planning to attack us with bombs and guns,” Samit Das, the district BJP president, said.

Trinamool Congress has a reputation of sharing an intimate relationship with explosives. In 2017, the house of a man who was previously associated with TMC was destroyed after 200 crude bombs that were hoarded there exploded. In February that year, 3 people were severely injured while they were making bombs in an under-construction house of a TMC leader in Burdwan. Earlier in May this year, locals had discovered explosives in the house of TMC leader Arabul Islam.

Does joblessness and poverty really fuel terrorism?

0

A familiar tune that is endorsed by politicians all across the globe is that joblessness and poverty is a primary cause for the growth of terrorism across the world. Despite evidence glaring at us in the face, it appears to be a myth that simply refuses to die. The latest person to claim such a thing was the Congress President, Rahul Gandhi. At a gathering at Bucerius Summer School in Hamburg on Wednesday, Gandhi insinuated that the formation of ISIS was a consequence of a lack of development and linked joblessness with terrorism.

Raul Gandhi said at the event, “A law that stopped a particular tribe in Iraq from getting government jobs…the network that was excluded from jobs in Iraq…the Tikriti tribal network linked up with the cellphone network of Iraq and with the network of artillery that was left in Iraq and you got an insurgency that fought to the United States and caused massive casualties to the Americans. That insurgency slowly entered empty spaces. It entered the empty space in Iraq. It entered the empty space in Syria. And, it, in the end, connected with the global internet to form the horrific idea called ISIS.”

Firstly, it is preposterous of the Congress President to claim that the Narendra Modi government is trying to stop any particular community from getting government jobs.

Secondly, Rahul Gandhi is factually wrong since there was no ban on members of the Tikriti Federation from getting jobs, the ban was restricted to only the members of the Baath party, the party of Saddam Hussein which was accused of persecuting other religious minorities and even that was repealed later. Thus, to claim that ISIS was the consequence of that ban is a blatant considering the ban was enforced by an interim government that came into power after Saddam’s demise in 2003 while the origins of ISIS can be traced back to 1999.

The evidence on the matter of whether poverty inspires terrorism points otherwise. According to a research published in the Journal, ‘Studies in Conflict & Terrorism’ by Charles A. Russell, PhD and Bowman H. Miller at the Office of Special Investigations, U.S. Airforce, terrorists have at least a partial university education and belong to an affluent middle or upper-class family.

The abstract of the study which was published online in 2008 states, “Statistics compiled on over 350 known terrorists from eighteen Middle Eastern, Latin American, West European and Japanese groups revealed the composite terrorist as a single male, aged 22 to 24, with at least a partial university education, most often in the humanities. Terrorists who have practised vocations have generally been in law, medicine, journalism, teaching and—in only Turkish and Iranian groups—engineering and technical occupations. Today’s terrorist comes from an affluent middle‐ or upper‐class family that enjoys some social prestige.”

Another study published in the Journal, ‘Terrorism and Political Violence’ by James A. Piazza, PhD who is currently a Liberal Arts Professor of Political Science at The Pennsylvania State University, asserted that there was no relationship as such between economic development and terrorism.

The abstract of his study published in 2007 states, “Employing a series of multiple regression analyses on terrorist incidents and casualties in ninety-six countries from 1986 to 2002, the study considers the significance of poverty, malnutrition, inequality, unemployment, inflation, and poor economic growth as predictors of terrorism, along with a variety of political and demographic control variables. The findings are that, contrary to popular opinion, no significant relationship between any of the measures of economic development and terrorism can be determined. Rather, variables such as population, ethno-religious diversity, increased state repression and, most significantly, the structure of party politics are found to be significant predictors of terrorism.”

Furthermore, Piazza’s research on India found that terrorism here is not a ‘clear product of poor economic development’. The abstract of the study states, “Poorer states in India are not necessarily more prone to terrorism, but states that have outstanding and poorly addressed political disputes do experience a disproportionately high level of terrorist activity.”

Most classifications of Terrorism nowadays include ‘state-sponsored terrorism’ to describe a situation where a state machinery indulges in the violent persecution of its own citizens. The most obvious example that comes to everyone’s mind if Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia which slaughtered millions and millions of their own people on an industrial scale. As is obvious, a state cannot be managed by uneducated individuals and the senior leadership are definitely not poor. Thus, the biggest refutation of the ‘joblessness and poverty’ theory of terrorism are the perpetrators of state-sponsored terrorism.

Even a cursory glance at the recent terrorist activity in India and elsewhere in the world demonstrates that poverty and economic deprivation has little to do with terrorism. In Kashmir, for instance, the primary motivator for Jihad is the establishment of an Islamic Caliphate. Regarding Left-wing terrorism, there is a well established intellectual network in place that felicitates cohesion between different wings of the terrorist groups and provides a shield under which they can operate.

Terrorism, at the heart of it, is War. And a war cannot be waged efficiently in the modern era if the senior leadership is uneducated or illiterate. The foot-soldiers may well be poorly educated but the senior leadership cannot afford to be and as we can learn from Islamic terrorism, Baghdadi has a PhD in Islamic studies, Osama bin Laden was university educated as well and reports suggest he earned a degree in civil engineering as well. The fact of the matter is, terrorist groups cannot survive without a strong ideological foundation that it is established on and a senior leadership which is highly skilled.

The curious case of Antifa in US of A cannot be ignored as well. Department of Homeland Security and the FBI warned state and local officials in 2016 that Antifa had become increasingly confrontational and was engaging in “domestic terrorist violence.” Despite Antifa clearly being a terrorist organization, it has widespread support among the mainstream media in America and has credible support even among significant sections of the Democrat party. And in the case of Antifa, the leaders of the movement include professors at Universities who endorse the use of violence against others who are merely exercising their freedom of expression.

The political aspects of terrorism cannot be ignored as well. Supporting terrorism and fueling terrorist sentiments remains a lucrative avenue for certain political players. As we can see in Kashmir, the senior leadership of the Hurriyat stands to gain from the conflict in Kashmir. And the longer they can keep the charade going, the better it is for them personally. At the international level, terrorism is used by countries to wage wars against other nations. It is an open secret that the United States of America is arming terrorists in the Middle East to remove Bashar al-Assad. And it is also known that Pakistan uses terrorist to wage a proxy war against India.

Terrorism is hardly a modern phenomenon. Scholars disagree on the exact moment of the origin of terrorism or who the first terrorists were but it is agreed that actions that we would now classify as terrorist activities can be found all too easily in the annals of history.

One of the earliest examples of embracing violence to achieve a certain ideological objective is Moses. The Bible says, “He (Moses) told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each of you men is to fasten his sword to his side, go back and forth through the camp from gate to gate, and slay his brother, his friend, and his neighbor.’” The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people fell dead. Afterwards, Moses said, “Today you have been ordained for service to the LORD since each man went against his son and his brother; so He has bestowed a blessing on you this day.” And then there were the Sicarii zealots who are said to have massacred 700 women and children by the Roman Historian Flavius Josephus during their revolt against Roman rule.

In more recent times, we have Maximilien Robespierre, the infamous architect of the Reign of Terror, who extolled the virtues of terror and even deemed it a necessity for governance. And if we are to accept certain modern classifications of terrorism, the Mughal regime among other Islamic kingdoms would certainly be held guilty of indulging in ‘state-sponsored terrorism’ or whatever variant is applicable to that era. As is clear, using violence to achieve specific ideological objectives is certainly not a modern phenomenon.

Terrorism is, thus, best understood in terms of a War that is primarily driven by serious ideological motives. The manner in which the War then manifests itself is influenced by multiple factors. Even among the multiple factors that influence terrorism, poverty is found to have minimal impact. Thus, to reduce the various complexities of terrorism to mere joblessness and poverty is turning one’s face away from the realities of existence because they are much too difficult to bear. Therefore, the sooner we abandon the myth that poverty and joblessness fuels terrorism, the better it will be for all of us and the more we can focus on the real causes that motivate individuals to embrace terrorism.

After advocating for ISIS Rozgar Yojna, Rahul Gandhi is back with his ‘many facets’

0

Rahul Gandhi is touring Germany. No, he is not being Jason Bourne on top of a corporate building, he is apparently meeting intellectuals and discussing the employment status of ISIS terrorists. Earlier today, Indian people were being furious over Rahul Gandhi for equating ISIS terrorists to ‘poor unemployed youth’ and naturally so. Isn’t ‘unemployment’ an exclusive excuse saved only for Kashmiri stone-pelters? Anyway, Indians should really be grateful that the Congress prince did not mistake the German events for an election rally and announce some ‘XYZ Gandhi Rozgar Yojna’ for ISIS terrorists, or demanded an ISIS reservation quota.

But in their haste to react, Indian social media users had grossly underestimated Rahul Gandhi. He has such natural charm that we Indians cannot stay mad at him for long. Before the day was done, the prince was back in news. The Congress official handle on Twitter shared some images of Rahul Gandhi where he is standing clueless near a wall and giving poses just like a kid on his first day at school, in an apparent attempt to provide a glimpse of this ‘multifaceted’ personality.

As soon as the images were shared, the floodgates opened on social media.

As he was standing near a wall full of graffiti, photoshop was inevitable.

However, some thoughtful Twitter users considered it a realistic representation of the Party’s predicament as of now.

As if the first Tweet did not provide enough meme material for a month, the official Congress handle Tweeted some more images of Rahul Gandhi and lightbulbs (not joking) and even parody accounts started to have a field day.

Indians should be thankful for Rahul Gandhi. Looks like its only BJP supporters who realise his actual potential and call him their ‘star pracharak’. He has such unique talent to make Indians laugh in most grim situations. Just when we thought we had enough of Shikanji business ideas and BHEL mobile phones, He has given us another opportunity to laugh off some stress from our busy lives.

Bihar Sampark Kranti Express painted with beautiful Mithila art makes its maiden journey

0

9 coaches of the superfast Bihar Sampark Kranti Express adorned with beautiful Madhubani paintings of the traditional Mithila artform have departed from the Darbhanga railway station in Bihar on their maiden journey. The train is scheduled to reach Delhi later today. As per reports, the coaches were painted under the initiative of the Indian Railways to promote the traditional art forms of the Mithila region.

The Bihar Sampark Kranti Express runs from Darbhanga in Bihar to the national capital and the coaches were attached at the Samastipur division of the East-Central Railway Zone. As per reports, the East Central Railways Division is planning to paint as many as 100 coaches of different trains with the Madhubani art. Danapur Divisional Railway Manager was quoted by IANS as stating that at present 22 coaches of the Patna-Delhi Rajdhani Express are also being painted with the traditional Madhubani paintings. The Sampark Kranti Express was painted by traditional artists of the region and the Railways have reportedly spent Rs 1 lakh per coach.

Railway divisions are encouraged to depict their zonal art forms in trains and railway stations. Previously, the Madhubani Railway station had grabbed national attention when the station was beautifully decorated with Madhubani paintings by local artists. Taking cue from Madhubani station, several other railway stations in India were also decorated with traditional paintings. Later, Raja Ki Mandi station in UP was adorned with traditional ‘Ram Barat’ paintings depicting Lord Ram and Sita’s wedding and Titwala station in Maharashtra was decorated with vibrant and thoughtful art by local artists.

Madhubani is the traditional art form of the Mithila region which includes parts of Bihar and Nepal. The artists use natural pigments and depict bright, colourful images of Hindu gods and events from Ramayana and Mahabharata. Natural entities like the sun, moon, flowers, leaves and animals are widely depicted in these paintings. Railways have stated that these initiatives will not only provide a platform for local artists to showcase their talent, it will also popularise local art, crafts and will create awareness among travellers.

Many other Railway stations have now gone ahead to beautify their walls with traditional paintings. It is notable here that Madhubani Railway Station had gone ahead to win the second prize in the station Beautification contest organised by the Indian Railways in May this year. Balharshapur and Chandrapur stations in Maharashtra had won the joint first prize.
