NDTV’s Ravish Kumar shows more symptoms of getting paranoid, shares a new conspiracy theory

Journalist Ravish Kumar who works for a news channel which is accused of leaking sensitive information of the Indian air-force seems to be showing further symptoms of paranoia.

We had recently reported how a very paranoid Ravish had cried surveillance when a common citizen had clicked a picture of him violating traffic rules. Ravish in the picture was seen driving his car while wearing earphones, with the photographer even claiming that the journalist was using his phone.

Later when Ravish became aware of the said picture, he claimed that his life was under threat owing to a sustained surveillance. Ironically Ravish who himself was crying ‘surveillance’, allegedly decided to stalk the individual who clicked his photograph and even sent goons to attack him.

Predictably Ravish was lampooned on social media for his behaviour, but doesn’t seem to have helped him rectify his ways since.

On Thursday he again decided to float a conspiracy theory via his official Facebook page, this time about his news channel being a victim of improper transmission:

In the post which also contained a ‘video proof’ of his conspiracy theory, Ravish claimed that his channel’s transmission was freezing during his Prime Time show on a Tata Sky connection in Gwalior, while other channels were working normally. Besides this, he claimed that he gets various complaints from his viewers about either his face or voice disappearing during his show.

He thus insinuated being a victim of some conspiracy by claiming that he wasn’t getting any technical explanation for the same. Following this, he appealed to his followers to send him a video if they to ever experience such a phenomenon.

To further rub his point he added another such video where just his channel’s transmission was being affected:

While it is natural for human beings to go slightly overboard, it was indeed puzzling to note that Ravish felt that a conspiracy to stifle his voice was so intense that “some forces” would go to the extent of interfering with his channel’s transmission.

Even though most of his fans were seen agreeing with him, there were a few who blasted Ravish for his conspiracy theories:

Man chides Ravish for his conspiracy theories

In the above post one, a user is seen blasting Ravish for not properly consulting with a tech expert before making his claims. He also claimed that the cause for such issue usually lies on the channel’s end.

Another user chided him for his regular moaning on social media:

One individual was seen joking about Ravish’s conspiracies:

Even assuming that Ravish is right about the aforementioned “technical difficulties”, it might be a relief to note that not many people would be inconvenienced by the same owing to Ravish’s channel not even being in the top 5 of Hindi News channels when it comes to BARC ratings:

Did PM Narendra Modi just troll Mamata Banerjee?

It has been just a couple of days since a video surfaced online, showing a visibly angry Mamata Banerjee. It was reported that the West Bengal CM  had to walk a short distance to the Vidhan Soudha for H D Kumaraswamy’s swearing-in which she felt was inappropriate.

The consequence of the above was that the Director General of Police (DGP), Neelamani Raju was transferred allegedly for ‘insulting’ West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. Banerjee was seen reprimanding the DGP and then going on to complain to JD(S) leaders H D Deve Gowda and Kumaraswamy.

Today, PM Modi landed in West Bengal for a series of events. The PM arrived in his chopper and was greeted with a bouquet of flowers by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on his arrival. The short meeting with Banerjee was caught on camera, and it appears, PM Modi might have pulled the West Bengal CM’s leg

There is no audio, but PM Modi can be seen jocularly signalling to the distance Banerjee had to walk to reach the helipad. Was Narendra Modi mocking Didi’s fairly raw wound on the soil of West Bengal? Many on social media felt that Modi was indeed trolling the CM.

Going by past chain of events, some expressed concern for PM Modi’s future

And a parody video with the possible audio is also out:

While Modi may be immune, we must express deep concern over the livelihood of the driver of the CM and also the person responsible for planning this event, since they made the CM walk such a distance.

Tuticorin : Did the Congress government approve expansion plans for controversial Sterlite Project?

In a shocking revelation, Republic TV has accessed documents which show that the Congress-led UPA government, on multiple occasions backed the controversial Sterlite project in Tuticorin. In the light of Congress blaming the Narendra Modi led BJP government for Sterlite protests, these documents show how blatantly the Congress is lying about the approvals.

According to Republic TV, six separate documents which serve as recorded endorsements and two press releases provide ample evidence that the UPA government, between 2007 and 2012, spanning over two governments, backed the project despite repeated concerns.

The first approval came in March 2007 when UPA’s Environment Ministry cleared the proposal for setting up 2×60 MW coal-based captive power plant. This was followed by August 2007 for an expansion for Copper Smelter, writing ‘MoEF accords environmental clearance.’ In January 2009, the ministry gave a fresh environmental clearance to Sterlite for an expansion.

When MoS in Environment Ministry, Jairam Ramesh, was asked about pollution in Tuticorin in the Parliament in March 2010, he had said ‘no serious charge has been levelled against Sterlite.’ He followed it up in August 2010 by saying that the expansion permissions were given after following the procedure laid out in Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification when the government was questioned whether the permission was given without undertaking any public hearing. Finally, in July 2012, the government backed the expansion by permitting another construction at the plant.

The Tuticorin region of TamilNadu has been engulfed in violent protests by agitators who are opposing the proposed expansion of smelter Thoothukudi by Sterlite Copper – a subsidiary of Vedanta. This expansion plan would result in the plant’s total output potential to rise to 4.2 lakh tonnes per year.

The violent protests which have seen damage to public property have resulted in the deaths of at least thirteen individuals after the police resorted to firing to try and establish control. In an attempt to exploit the situation, Congress President Rahul Gandhi had even tried to attack PM Modi and RSS for these deaths by claiming that Tamilians were ‘massacred’ for not following RSS’ ideology. RSS even lashed out at Rahul for lying blatantly.

Sessions court rejects Teesta Setalvad and husband’s bail plea in fund embezzlement case

Controversial ‘activist’ Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand have today moved to the Gujrat High Court after the Ahmedabad city sessions court rejected their bail plea. According to reports, Setalvad and Javed Anand have appealed in the HC against the lower court order.

Setalvad and Javed’s appeal is expected to come up for hearing on Monday. The sessions court had yesterday rejected their anticipatory bail plea in the 1.4 crores funds embezzlement case. Earlier last month the Supreme Court had granted them interim relief from arrest till May 31. The SC had asked them to move to a competent court in Gujrat for anticipatory bail. They had appealed for anticipatory bail for an FIR lodged against them on March 30 by a man named Raees Khan. Raees Khan was the former close aide of the couple and worked in their NGO.

Teesta Setalvad’s troubles root from an alleged 1.4 crores funds embezzlement case against her and her husband. She had allegedly collected funds for the 2002 riot victims and instead used it for personal luxury and expenses. The allegations had come to light after one of the residents of the Gulbarg Housing Society filed a complaint against her alleging that she had embezzled funds collected for the 2002 riot victims through her NGOs Sabrang Trust and Citizens for Justice and Peace.

After the complaint, six bank accounts belonging to Teesta, her husband and the two NGOs were frozen by the Gujrat government in 2015. An appeal to unfreeze the bank accounts was rejected by the Gujrat HC in 2015 and by the SC in 2017.

It is alleged that she had used the funds collected in the name of riot victims for liquor, movies, gadgets and personal goods. Further, it was also found that her NGO has violated FCRA norms. The Sabrang Communications and Publishing Pvt Ltd had allegedly received Rs 2.9 lakhs from the Ford Foundation even if it was not registered under FCRA.

Setalvad has had several allegations against her including luring and misguiding a key witness into giving false testimony, FIRs for tweeting objectionable pictures of Hindu Gods and also FIRs for promoting enmity on religious grounds.

16 years after becoming MP, present ‘Maharaja of Gwalior’ wants government bungalow in Bhopal

Four-time Member of Parliament and former Minister of state Jyotiraditya Scindia has asked for a government bungalow in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. Acc

According to reports, Scindia, one of the richest politicians of the country, has written a letter to the Government of Madhya Pradesh for a Bungalow to be allocated to him as soon as possible.

courtesy: @nisheethsarsan

Scindia has reportedly mentioned in his letter that he is an MP from Guna in Madhya Pradesh and for developmental work in his constituency he has to travel a lot to the state capital. He has added that as he is a Member of Parliament from the state he is eligible for a government bungalow in the state capital.

It is notable here that Scindia has been an MP from 2002 from the Guna constituency where he fought and won the election after the death of his father Madhavrao Scindia. Jyotiradiya Scindia is also the current heir and Maharaja of the erstwhile Gwalior kingdom.

Scindia is reportedly appointed as the President of the election campaign committee for Congress in Madhya Pradesh for the upcoming assembly elections and it is being speculated that a government bungalow will help him coordinate and control the campaign. According to reports, there are 15 leaders in his campaign committee and the bungalow in Bhopal will be helpful during the campaign process. Congress senior leaders Digvijay Singh and Kamalnath both reportedly have government bungalows in Bhopal.

According to reports, Scindia has written the letter on 23rd May and the state home ministry is yet to decide which bungalow to be allocated to him. Though Scindia has not asked for any specific property to be allocated to him, there are reportedly many senior leaders and officials on the waiting list for government bungalows in the state capital.

Government allocated bungalows have always been perceived as a power statement in Indian politics and hence coveted by politicians. After the BJP government came to power in the centre, many squatters have been asked to vacate the bungalows they had been occupying for decades. It was reported that as many as 1500 squatters have been evicted from government bungalows in Lutyens in Delhi alone. In Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath’s government has ordered many former CMs and political leaders to vacate their government allocated bungalows within 15 days.

Karnataka: ahead of floor test, deputy chief minister says Congress ‘not decided’ on 5 year term for Kumaraswamy

If reports are to be believed, Karnataka Assembly drama does not seem to be ending any time soon. In his first press conference as a deputy chief minister, G Parameshwara said that the party (Congress) has not taken any decision yet to support JDS’ Kumaraswamy as chief minister for full five year term. Adding that their main aim is to first pass the floor test, which will be held later in the day today, and modalities including sharing the CM post are being worked out.

This just adds fuel to the speculation that the cracks in the coalition which everyone could foresee, may appear sooner than later. JDS has 37 MLAs and is dependent on Congress to sustain, had earlier ruled out the possibility of splitting the chief ministership with Congress. But Congress may sit it out till 2019 general elections at least so that it does not have any adverse effect on the general elections.

This is in line with Congress’ ‘give and take‘ formula to uphold constitutional principles and democracy.

A friendly reminder to HD Kumaraswamy, son of HD Deve Gowda: In 1996, where Congress led by P V Narasimha Rao, plagued with scams and scandals, lost decisively but then neither of the other political parties had a majority to form a government. BJP was the single largest party with 161 seats but couldn’t cross the halfway mark. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was invited to form the government and asked to prove his majority within two weeks on the floor of the Parliament. While BJP tried to form a post-poll alliance, it could not reach majority. After trying for 13 days, Vajpayee conceded he could not manage more than 200 seats and resigned rather than face the confidence vote.

The Congress, despite being the second largest party, declined to form the government. Instead, offered external support to small regional parties, which were full of internal conflicts, and in an unexpected move, JDS’ H D Deve Gowda was made the Prime Minister of India. In less than two years, Congress withdrew support and the government collapsed.

History has an uncanny habit of repeating itself.

BJP and Shiv Sena dominate Maharashtra MLC polls, Congress manages just 17 votes in one seat

The BJP and Shiv Sena won two seats each in the biannual Maharashtra MLC polls, with the NCP winning another seat, India Today has reported. In total, voting took place on six MLC seats in the state on Monday, out of which the results for the Osmanabad-Beed-Latur seat has been deferred – following a court order. The six seats saw a voting percentage of 99.18 per cent.

Out of the five seats for which the results were declared, BJP won the Amravati, Wardha-Chandrapur-Gadchiroli seats and Shiv Sena won from Nasik and Parbhani-Hingoli. The Sharad Pawar led NCP managed to notch a win in the Raigad-Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg seat.

The Congress party though couldn’t open its account in these five seats and to make matters worse, polled just 17 votes in Amravati, as per a Swarajya report.

If the India Today report is to be believed, the Congress may not even be able to save face in the Osmanabad seat as it is being considered as a direct fight between BJP’s Pankaja Munde who is also the state’s Women and Child Welfare Minister and NCP’s Dhananjay Munde who is her cousin.

To bring the MLC voting in context, going by an India News report, BJP won the Amravati seat by defeating Congress’s Anil Madhodariya by more than 440 votes. For Wardha seat, BJP again defeated a Congress candidate, this time by about 80 votes.

The Shiv Sena in its victories at Nashik and Parbhani defeated the NCP and Congress candidates by 190 and 30 votes respectively. The NCP won its Raigad seat by defeating the Shiv Sena candidate by 200 votes.

The elections for the Legislative council are different from the state assembly elections, with the legislators either being elected by local body members, graduates and teachers who fulfill various criteria, or by non-members of the assembly. The governor too nominates some MLC members.

The ISI spy network that works against India is being dismantled brick by brick with frequent arrests

In a joint operation with local police and the Jammu and Kashmir military intelligence unit, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Thursday arrested a suspected ISI agent from Pithoragarh. The accused Ramesh who was working as a cook in the Indian diplomat’s house concurred with the fact that he had bugged the diplomat’s house with help of ISI agents to pluck out information from the same.

“The accused Ramesh worked as a cook at the house of Indian diplomat in Pakistan and bugged his house with help of ISI to get information,” an official said.

Ramesh had worked in Islamabad for two years before returning to India in 2017, as revealed by Additional Director General (Law and Order) Anand Kumar and ATS IG Aseem Arun in a press conference. He reportedly got the job of a cook at the Indian diplomat’s house through his brother’s reference who works for the Indian Army.

According to police officers, Ramesh during his interrogation owned up that he was passing information about military installations in UP to the ISI. He also admitted that he used to go through the laptop, other electronic devices, diaries and files of the Indian Diplomat for whom he was working, to pass on information to ISI agents.

On further investigation, police established that Ramesh was under debt from banks and from money lenders. ISI agreed to pay him in dollars and had already paid him 1300 dollars for the service he was rendering to them instead. This helped him to almost repay off his entire loan amounting to rupees 8 to 9 lakhs.

The capture of a suspected terrorist from Uttar Pradesh’s Faizabad earlier this month led to his arrest. However, the police have denied there is any evidence that any officer in the embassy was involved.

Over the years many such incidents have grabbed the spotlight where ISI backed spies have been nabbed for allegedly transferring important information across the border. Not long ago the Hyderabad High Court had upheld the life imprisonment awarded to a Pakistan spy for allegedly transferring strategic defence information of India to Pakistani Army through mobile and emails.

In fact, in 2016 the Indian government had shared that more than 46 Pakistani spies had been arrested across India between the years 2013-16. Three Pakistani spies were nabbed in 2016 for getting information from people in BSF, taking the count higher.

As we dig into the past, we see innumerable such instances where ISI spies of both Indian and Pakistani origin have been caught for enkindling terror in India. Few such occurrences are stated below:

Way back in 2015 it was reported by Firstpost that Special Task Force of Kolkata Police had arrested a trio working as contract labourer of the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd for their alleged links to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence. In the same year, it was reported by News 18, how a Pakistani spy Kalam acquired full Indian identity and spied on IAF and Army installations. Trained in communication codes and military formation signs, Kalam was tasked by the ISI to target military and Air Force installations in Bareilly. Following his arrival in India, Kalam worked as a photographer in a studio in Bareilly while carrying on spying activities.

In a similar incidence recounted by Hindustan Times on 15th February 2017, a Pakistan spy Haji Khan had been passing on defence-related information to the ISI and two other agencies for the past three years. Khan passed important defence information to his wife living in Pakistan who further passed in on to the ISI. On being interrogated, he told the agencies his brother Jumme Khan, who also lives in Rahimyarkhan, had been caught by the ISI and in return of his release, the ISI forced him to make the defence-related information available to it.

Lately, as stated by Livemint on 30th March 2018, a man of Indian Nationality, who was allegedly working as a spy for Pakistani intelligence agencies, was arrested in Amritsar by the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) and Military Intelligence. Police had then recovered photographs of vital installations, hand-made maps of restricted areas, photocopies of restricted training manuals of the Army and information regarding Army attack formations from him.

According to Indian security agencies, ISI has been using social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to honey trap people by operating a large number of fake Facebook accounts in the name of young girls who actively try to befriend with unemployed young people and retired/serving officials in the armed force and subsequently try to allure them into undercover activities.

Extensive investigations need to be conducted continuously to track down and curb these miscreants from conducting such ghoulish crime. The escapeway undoubtedly lies within our system, otherwise, how do these malefactors get access to such sensitive information, converging swiftly into our system defies any logic.

Leftist cabal tries to shift goal posts when called out on defaming Major Gogoi

After some news outlets reported that Major Gogoi had been detained at a hotel at Shrinagar, the left-liberal cabal has gone berserk. They had cried hoarse over alleged human rights violations last year when Major Leetul Gogoi tied up a stone pelter to the army jeep to prevent stone pelting.

The reports regarding Major Gogoi are still very unclear and there are several loopholes in the news reports. While many reports are claiming that the Major was arrested, but the reports all have multiple versions of the stories and slowly ground reports are emerging that claim that the Major did not meet any girl in a room and the said girl, who was accompanied by another man was not allowed beyond the reception area.

Meanwhile, the usual suspects have begun a full-fledged smear campaign against Major Gogoi.

Even the outlook magazine article had said on its cover that Major Gogoi has been arrested but in the body of the article, it was mentioned that the hotel staff did not allow the girl and the man accompanying her meet the persons they wanted to meet. Soon, Twitter users started seeing through the lies peddled by the usual suspects and began calling out their lies.

When the matter of Major Gogoi being arrested and even being in a room was soon discovered to be fake news, some tried propagating the allegation the girl in question was underage, thus trying to employ sly measures to defame the Major. When even that lie did not hold and it surfaced that there was no evidence of any direct involvement, they shifted the goal posts again. Kavita Krishnan and Sagarika Ghose started complaining about why was the Major even allegedly meeting a woman while being on active duty.

Eventually, it has come to light that there was neither any arrest or any illegal activity as our leftist liberals would want us to believe. The individuals who indulged in actively defaming the soldier are now being called out in the social media for peddling fake news.

On Leadership, Statecraft and Faultlines : Kaliyug could use a Rama from Treta Yuga

I will confess straight off the bat – this post is from the Ramayana, but its learnings apply uncannily enough to modern day leadership too.

With that minor matter of a confession out, let’s get started. While one may not associate the Ramayana with expositions on statecraft, the fact is that the Ayodhya kanda itself has one such example. In sarga 94 (of the Critical Edition, sarga 100 in other versions) of the Ayodhya Kanda, when Bharata comes to meet Rama and to persuade him to return to Ayodhya as the rightful king, Rama, of course, refuses, but first asks Bharata about the state of the kingdom and whether Bharata, as the presumed king of Ayodhya, is following the duties of a king. This is one of the longest sargas in Ayodhya kanda, and is worth reading repeatedly. More pertinently, Rama exhorts Bharata to abandon the sins associated with kings. How many? Fourteen. Let’s look at them all:

  1. Non-belief – whether you call it atheism or non-belief, it amounts to the same. A leader has to believe in the nation, a CEO has to believe in the company, parents have to believe in their children. Without faith, all is lost.
  2. Falsehood – lying may be a part of statecraft, but not lying to oneself. A leader given to habitual lies will win neither the admiration nor the loyalty of anyone.
  3. Anger – anger destroys wisdom. Anger leads to decisions made in haste. Anger led Lakshmana to believe that Bharata was coming to the forest, not to meet, but murder Rama.
  4. Distraction – perhaps the most fatal of flaws for a king to have. I had written a three-part series on Karna and how, I believe, distraction was his fatal flaw. Worse than distraction would be to be focused on the wrong objectives!
  5. Procrastination – when is the right time to start? A leader who keeps delaying for no rational reason is guilty of betraying his charter, his mandate. Kabir immortalized this advice in his doha (couplet): “कालकरेसोआजकर, आजकरैसोअब| पलमेंपरलयहोयगी, बहुरीकरेगाकब||“
  6. Disregard for the learned – Chandragupta Maurya became successful because he listened to the advice of Chanakya, the learned Brahmin. So did Arjuna, when he listened to Krishna’s advice. The day he didn’t was the day he lost Abhimanyu. A leader who believes he is the wisest, and therefore has no need for the counsel of the wise, is a leader with a short shelf-life and an inversely proportional ego. There is a reason why King Kousika, the kshatriya, could not also become Brahmarshi Viswamitra, the sage. It is also the reason why Krishna did not pick arms up during the Mahabharata war.
  7. Laziness – if distraction is not focusing on the objectives, and procrastination is delaying starting a mission, then laziness has to be the worst sin of the three.
  8. Pursuit of the five senses – like being led in different directions by the different horses that our senses represent, without anyone to rein them in, without anyone to harness them and propel them in one direction. We have had examples of leaders who led their country down the ditch, even as they indulged all their senses to the extreme. Naming names may not be politic, though.
  9. Single-minded devotion to artha – the modern world prefers to call it CSR – corporate social responsibility, but the exhortation itself is millennia old. It is a truth our sages had understood well. Some leaders would do well to heed this advice over all other faults listed here. Others have expressed the sentiment in different words, and yet the single-minded pursuit of economic growth, to the exclusion of everything else, has proven a soulless endeavour. Attempting societal good without economic prosperity is what the nightmare of socialism was. Compassionate capitalism is what the world may call it now, but our sages had internalized this philosophy thousands of years ago.
  10. Seeking counsel of those who don’t know the objectives – this could be interpreted as listening to idiots. It is open to debate as to how one recognizes an idiot, since many an idiot come in the garb of an intellectual, as the scholar Nassim Nicholas Taleb has pointed out. If a leader cannot separate the intellectual from the idiot, (s)he shall soon come to electoral, or stock market, grief.
  11. Failure to start projects that have been decided – empty words are like empty vessels. They make little other than noise. Talking about doing is not the same as doing. If a leader decides, for example, to crack down on the corrupt, then not starting that project is a fatal fault with the leader.
  12. Failure to protect secrets – Chanakya has written extensively on this topic, and as the proverb goes, “loose lips sink ships“, it should be the motto of every wise leader.
  13. Failure to observe auspicious signs – while I would not exactly call it as a call to keep an astrologer or Oracle beside oneself, it can probably be interpreted in modern times as keeping an ear to the ground, to listen to the grapevine. Not every piece of news comes to the leader via a sworn affidavit. Sometimes, the answer is simply blowing in the wind.
  14. Readiness to rise from one’s seat for everyone – this can be interpreted as either being all too ready to engage in a conflict with all and sundry or being too indiscriminate in honouring people. In either case, the advice is to exercise selectivity. We have seen CEOs who got into pointless arguments with a driver; they did not remain CEO for long. Another way of understanding this fault is by asking, if one honours everyone, then who does one not honour? After all, honour is a distinction that should be conferred with care, not gay abandon.
[the list of fourteen faults/sins have been taken from Valmiki Ramayana, Vol.1, translated by Bibek Debroy]

Let’s end with a bit from the Mahabharata. After the Pandavas had their great, grand palace built in Indraprastha, Narada paid them a visit and asked Yudhishthira questions on dharma, artha, and kama – loosely meaning, questions on the duties, economic policies, and the pleasures of a king. This is covered in chapter 5 of Sabha Parva. One of the questions that Narada poses to Yudhishthira is this:

“Do you abhor the fourteen royal vices—atheism, falsehood, anger, negligence, procrastination, avoidance of the wise, laziness, restlessness of mind, consultation with only one person, consultation with those who are ignorant of artha, failure to act on something that has been decided, divulgement of counsel, abandonment of beneficial plans and addiction to material objects?”

कच्चित्त्वंवर्जयस्येतान्राजदोषांश्चतुर्दश[2.5.95 – 2.5.98, from the electronic text of the Mahabharata]

Does this sound familiar?

Good advice is timeless. What Rama knew in the Treta Yuga, sage Narada had to impart to Yudhishthira in the Dwapara Yuga. In Kaliyuga, we have neither a Rama nor a Narada, it would seem.
