Congress leader arrested in Mumbai for running a fake currency racket

In a bit of an embarrassment to the Congress party in Maharashtra, one of its local leaders has been arrested for running a fake currency note racket.

As per reports, the directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) has arrested the General secretary of North Central Mumbai District Congress Committee named Haji Imran Sheikh and two other persons, and has seized about Rs 9 lakhs from them. The other two accused include the uncle of Imran Sheikh named Zahid Sheikh and a builder named Mahesh Alimchandani.

The DRI is also planning on taking to custody a fourth person named Shivaji Khedekar who has been arrested by Ahmednagar Police in connection with another fake case.

Turns out that, Imran Sheikh was arrested with fake Rs 500 notes of about Rs 9 lakh when he was on route deliver it to someone in BandraKurla complex. According to the officials the only difference in the fake notes is that the ink is a little lighter and it didn’t have the two dimensional colour.

What might be more disturbing is that, out of the 27 security features in the original notes, these fake notes were able to replicate about 15.

As per the DRI, these notes were printed in Bangladesh and were supplied via the north-eastern states. The report claimed that, Imran Sheikh and his uncle got these notes for Rs 4.5 lakh that is 50% of the true value. They later confessed during the interrogation that they used to receive the notes from the builder Alimchandani who in-turn used to get them Shivaji Khedekar, the now arrested Pune businessman.

As per Aimchandani who was arrested from Khar in Mumbai, he used to receive about 5% as commission and had in the past circulated about Rs 10 lakh in these fake Rs 500 notes. Even Imran Sheikh and his uncle seem to have successfully circulated such fake notes while buying goats.

Such a revelation is certainly worrying as one of the main reasons given by the RBI for demonetisation was that, “it was necessitated to tackle counterfeiting Indian banknotes and curb funding of terrorism with fake notes”. But if as per these reports some unscrupulous elements have indeed started to circulate fake notes, one hopes that authorities successfully and surely clamp down on it.

Stand Up comic shows how not to react to criticism on social media

0

An Indian standup comic, Sanjay Rajoura, who goes by the Twitter handle “@urbantucchha” today resorted to name calling and threats to another Twitter user who did not agree with his views on the Supreme Court’s order of banning firecracker sale in Delhi this Diwali. Rajoura is a part of the group Aisi Taisi Democracy, which claims to be into stand-up comedy on social issues. Other members of this group are Indian Ocean’s bassist and vocalist Rahul Ram and lyricist/comedian Varun Grover. The handle of this group, had tweeted the below, ascribing it to Rajoura:

Twitter user @GappistanRadio, quoting this tweet said that despite Rajoura’s dislike for firecrackers and Chetan Bhagat’s books, he couldn’t quite forcibly stop anyone from buying either. However, this triggered Rajoura who took to Twitter to threaten Gappistan Radio, by using the usual Indian Liberal (his bio also says he’s a feminist) weapon of personal attacks and going after livelihood of an individual they disagree with. While he has deleted these tweets, here are the screenshots where he claims how he knows where Gappistan Radio lives and works, and his boss may be someone whom Rajoura knows, so “he should be careful”.

Ironically, his own tweets from the archives speak on how abusive Modi fans are and how he would straighten them up if he ever gets his hands on them.

Twitter was quick to react to the deleted tweets.

Interestingly, Rajoura is being followed by various politicians and journalists.

This is not the first time the so-called champions of free speech have made personal attacks and gone after employment of people they don’t agree with. OpIndia co-founder @Bhak_sala was also hounded by abusive troll masquerading as journalist Swati Chaturvedi. Even author Shuchi Kalra was attacked by pseudo liberals when she showed her anger towards terrorists who had killed our soldiers.

It is shocking how a little bit of criticism riles up these snowflakes and quickly move from abusing and threatening someone to playing victim.

Congress VP Rahul Gandhi makes sexist remarks, says Sangh women don’t wear shorts

0

In August, women took to social media with the hashtag #AintNoCinderalla, as a protest against the moral policing following the reported stalking of a woman in Chandigarh. Many, including Congress leaders joined in the protest, which basically questioned the misogynistic mindset that women’s clothes and behaviour are to be questioned for crimes against them.

Of course, as a woman, I have been subjected to scrutiny and harassment sometimes solely on the basis of what I have worn so defying these societal norms of what is ‘acceptable’ is a welcome move.

However, as much as it is true that I should not be harassed for the clothes I am wearing, the same is true that my choice of clothing should not be a barometer to judge how progressive I am in my thoughts or actions. You would expect the so-called leaders who have been stuck on repeat that they want women empowerment would actually be progressive enough not to judge women on their clothing.

But not Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi.

Gandhi, while addressing a rally in poll-bound Gujarat, today said that, BJP is oppressing women who raise their voices.

He then asked the audience if they have ever seen women in Shakhas (of the right leaning volunteer led nationalist organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) wearing shorts. “I have never seen them wear shorts,” Gandhi said.

Is Gandhi trying to imply that women could be progressive only if they wear shorts? As a woman, this feels extremely demeaning that a leader would say such a thing. Just as how wearing short clothes is not an invitation for sexual harassment, wearing short clothes cannot be used as a benchmark to assess how progressive I could be as an individual.

Nirmala Sitharaman is India’s first ever full time Defence Minister, Sushma Swaraj is Minister of External Affairs, Smriti Irani is handling Textile Ministry, an industry which provides direct and indirect employment to thousands, and Information and Broadcasting Ministry. These are all associated with the BJP, and in one stroke, Rahul Gandhi has insulted them because “they don’t wear shorts”.

I am baffled that someone who aspires to become the Prime Minister of India has such shallow thoughts.

Rahul Gandhi, I am a right wing, progressive, Modi supporting Hindu nationalist woman, and don’t you dare judge me from my clothes.

Amethi’s local congress leader joins BJP merely days after Rahul Gandhi’s visit

In a bit of an embarrassment to the Congress party, days after their Vice President Rahul Gandhi paid a visit to his parliamentary constituency Amethi, a local leader has now quit the party and has joined the BJP.

As per reports, a local Congress leader of Amethi named Jang Bahadur Singh, announced his decision on Monday to join the BJP. Singh earlier was a BSP MLA from 2003 to 2007 before joining the Congress. He claimed that he was disappointed with the party’s policies and was enthused by BJP’s development oriented politics.

According to him, projects which were started earlier (possibly by the congress), had slowed down significantly thereby causing a sense of agony. But he claimed that with the arrival of Union Minister Smriti Irani (who fought the 2014 elections from Amethi), there has been a visible shift in the region. He claimed that unlike Congress which was ignoring its workers, Smirti Irani was honouring them and was also showing inclination towards the region’s development.

He also heavily criticised the Congress by claiming that despite having a government at the centre for two terms, no significant step had been taken to develop the region. He also took potshots at Rahul Gandhi by terming his statement, “Congress will do in six months what the Modi government has not been able to do so far” as laughable.

Incidentally this defection by Singh came merely days after Rahul Gandhi’s tour of the region. It was reported that Rahul Gandhi had reached his constituency on Wednesday for a 3 day visit. This visit was his first since the assembly elections in the state.

This defection of Singh also came just a day ahead of a scheduled visit of Amit Shah to Amethi. The preparations for this visit on Tuesday were reportedly overseen by Smriti Irani. Such a show of strength by the BJP, according to the report indicates that the party is planning a fight to win the seat in 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Congress twitter handle claims Indira Gandhi inaugurated a project 8 years after her death

0

In recent months, Congress social media handle has been source of much amusement. Whether it was a #KnowYourLegacy question backfiring, or getting trolled for the quiz which came back to haunt them about the horrors from the time of Congress misrule, Congress social media team has been setting the bars lower with each passing day.

Today, they posted #ThisDayThatYear, post which talked about ‘inauguration of Vidyasagar Setu in West Bengal. They talked about how Indira Gandhi had inaugurated the same, which handles over 85,000 vehicles a day.

There was a small mistake, though. Vidyasagar Setu was inaugurated in 1992, about 8 years after Indira Gandhi was assassinated. Unless Rajiv Gandhi, who has been credited to bringing all technological advancement to India, had also invented time machine, this is not quite possible.

After being pointed out by about the mistake, Congress deleted the tweet, but not before the screenshot was taken.

They even got a lesson in history.

They later posted a corrected tweet that while Gandhi had laid foundation in 1972, the bridge was finally inaugurated by then Prime Minister P. V. Narsimha Rao in 1992.

Earlier, too, they had goofed up in dates while paying tributes on death anniversary. They had written the date of death (27th September, 1833) before date of birth (22nd May, 1772) which appears as if he was born on 27th September, 1833 and passed away on 22nd May, 1772 which is just not possible.

Seems like the new social media head of Congress, Divya Spandana, is sticking her neck out in doing something new by setting higher bars for self goals.

How National Herald distorted facts to attack Piyush Goyal

The National Herald newspaper which is deeply embroiled  (along with its owners Sonia and Rahul Gandhi) in an alleged scam has done it again. In November last year, National Herald was relaunched by Rahul Gandhi, albeit in a digital avatar. And it appears it has restarted its activities of furthering Congress propaganda and other half truths. Earlier this year, we had exposed how the site had falsely claimed that money from PM’s Relief Fund went to Adani to build a hospital in Gujarat.

Now, following on the falsehoods of thewire.in, National Herald has tried to pick up the baton. In an article, claims that Power Minister Piyush Goyal handed out undue favours to Jay Amit Shah’s company, Kusum Finserve. It claims that the loan given by Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), a PSU under Goyal, had “flouted all rules and norms”.

We had given a detailed explanation regarding the loan in question. The terms and conditions of availing loans from IREDA clearly mentioned that any private entity in India can apply for a loan. The mission of IREDA is to promote, develop and extend financial assistance for renewable energy and energy efficiency/ conservation projects. It has sanctioned around Rs around Rs 37,000 crore of credit for clean energy projects so far and further Rs 28,000 crore to developers, which aids generation capacity of around 7,000 MW. It plans to sanction around Rs 13,000 crores this financial year. Hence, a Rs 10.35 crore loan was not out of order.

Further, Jay Amit Shah in his reply to thewire itself, had mentioned that the loan from IREDA was being repaid in time, and the outstanding amount as on 30.6.2017 had come down to Rs 8.52 crores due to its repayment.

Now the National Herald has tried to find some new “irregularity”. It claims as below:

So the allegation is that IREDA can fund projects of only upto 1 Megawatt, whereas Jay Shah’s company had a 2.1 Megawatt plant. To prove this, they use a screenshot from the IREDA website, which says the same. Here is a screenshot of the same portion, sourced from the IREDA site

Read Q3 and Q4. Q3 talks about the the “Equipment Financing Scheme”. Here it is mentioned that loan can be given for upto 1MW Wind farm projects. This is the regulation which National Herald was referring to. They claim Jay Amit Shah’s company flouted this norm since the project is of 2.1MW. Even while referring to this, they made an error of reproducing the 75% as 70%

Next one can see Q4. This speaks about a “project financing scheme”. Here there is no limit on the capacity of the project. Further, the 70% cap is mentioned here, and not in Q3. Thus, a borrower can get a loan under this  “project financing scheme, irrespective of capacity of the project. Thus, there is nothing to stop a financing of 2.1 MW plant

A source in the Power Ministry confirmed that the loan had been taken under the “project financing scheme” and not the “Equipment Financing Scheme”. It appears National Herald has picked up this habit of lying from its owner, Rahul Gandhi.

Gujarat election: Congress VP Rahul Gandhi caught lying, again

0

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, who is visiting poll-bound Gujarat, was caught lying again during his rally.

In a tweet posted by their newly appointed social media head Divya Spandana, who herself was caught spreading lies on social media, Gandhi is heard referring to The Wire’s so-called ‘exposé’ on Jay Shah, son of BJP President Amit Shah, insinuating financial irregularities in a company where Jay is a director.

In the video, a journalist is heard asking Gandhi his views on the article which OpIndia has debunked point by point. At 00:37 in the video, Gandhi alleges that Temple Enterprises Pvt. Ltd., the company Shah is a director in, made a profit of Rs. 80 crore. While as per the company records, the company had a turnover of Rs. 80.5 crore and a net loss (not profit) of 1.48 crore.

Spandana was mocked for referring to Gandhi’s gaffe as “his wittiest best”.

This is not the first time Congress scion has goofed up in his recent rallies in Gujarat. During his September rally in Gujarat, he lied that Sardar Patel’s Statue of Unity will be built in China, despite the clarification being issued by L&T that most of the statue will be built in India, with only the bronze cladding in the form of bronze plates, comprising of about 9% of total project cost, is being sourced from China. The very next day, he lied again. He claimed that PM Modi had waived off loan worth Rs. 1.3 lakh crore for 15 industrialists, which was again debunked by OpIndia.

Gandhi’s gaffe and Divya Spandana’s sharing a video which has Gandhi saying factually incorrect thing is quite an amusement since Divya’s brief, as soon as she joined the Congress team, from Gandhi himself was “Focus on the truth.” Two wrongs do not make a right, but three wrongs make a Rahul Gandhi claim.

12 out of 25 Supreme Court judges yet to make their financial assets public

0

In a news which might raise a few questions about the Indian Judiciary’s commitment to transparency, Economic Times has reported that half of Supreme Court’s judges are yet to make their assets available in the public domain.

8 years ago, the Supreme Court had passed a resolution which called for making the assets of its judges public. But it turns out that till now 12 of the 25 current judges of the Supreme Court are yet to make them public.

As per the resolution, such a disclosure is not mandatory, but reports regularly keep coming out about a lack of it As per the Bar & Bench report, this decision to publicise assets was taken by the court on 26th August 2009 as a result of great pressure from the public and even the judiciary.

This resolution incidentally was in accordance with another resolution dating back to 1997, where the judges were mandated to disclose their assets to the Chief Justice of India.

Now as per the Economic Times report, out of the 12 judges, direct elevations from the bar (that is those who were previously successful lawyers) like RF Nariman, Uday Umesh Lalit and L Nageswar Rao are yet to make their assets public.

The report also claimed that the process itself is not very complete, as for example no information is provided to show the assets of the judge before and after assuming office.

The details of the judges who indeed have declared their assets are available on http://supremecourtofindia.nic.in/assets-judges in the following manner:

As seen from the screen grab, 13 judges have declared the assets, which include the current Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra. This is a sample of his asset declaration [PDF]:

This debate on transparency comes days after the Supreme Court’s decision, to disclose its rationale behind making the collegium recommendations of judicial candidates. This collegium system till now didn’t disclose its rational behind transfers, elevation, appointments, and as a result this process was criticised by members of the legal fraternity for being opaque and arbitrary. In this collegium system, the final decisions are made by the 5 senior most judges headed by the Chief Justice.

Such a decision to make the collegium process more transparent comes about 2 years after the Supreme Court itself struct down the National Judicial Appointments Commission which had sought to inculcate a higher executive role in the whole process.

The Hindu suggests ‘bold economic steps’ to PM Modi, which he has already taken

0

In their business section of the news today, The Hindu published a half page article with the headline screaming – “Mr. PM: it’s time for bold economic thinking”. To give you a perspective of the page, am pasting a snapshot of the page below:

The headline was in tune with the flavor of the season – namely – our country is doomed economically and all of us are plunging into poverty tomorrow. However, what caught my attention was the sub heading – “The chief of the government would do well to take a leaf out of Narasimha Rao’s book and show statesmanship”.

Since I am generally interested in reading anything that mentions Narasimha Rao, I went on to read the long article. The reference to Narasimha Rao was only in the last paragraph of the nearly 1600-word article! This is what it said:

“Narasimha Rao, who was heading a minority government. Despite its existence on the edge, he dared to bring in a technocrat at that time — Dr. Manmohan Singh — to launch economic reforms. That was statesmanship.”

Of the many things that Prime Minister Narasimha Rao has done, it was really amusing to find that the authors think appointing Dr. Manmohan Singh was a show of statesmanship! While we can also spend time detailing the statesmanly things that Prime Minister Modi has done, let us spend time though discussing the “five things” that the authors tell us Prime Minister must do to exhibit “bold economic thinking”.

I am taking the liberty to paraphrase some of the ideas for the sake of brevity. The article lists the bold steps as follows:

“First, The Indian government should announce a one-time amnesty scheme, a la Indonesia, valid till December 31, by when anyone can disclose previously undisclosed income held within the country and abroad…”

Either the authors don’t read newspapers, or The Hindu itself has forgotten the various “amnesty” schemes this government has already announced! In his budget speech for the Financial year 2016-2017, Arun Jaitley has introduced the “Income Declaration Scheme , 2016” [pdf]. The operative part of the scheme is pasted below for detailed reading:

Then, in December 2016, after the demonetization scheme was announced – the government announced yet another scheme – wherein the money of those who declare undisclosed income will go into the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana.

So there were at least two well advertised amnesty schemes, yet for The Hindu, it was a bold economic step that the Prime Minister somehow still needs to take.

The authors go into more detail with their “original” suggestion. Though the emphasis is mine, please read their suggestion very carefully, because this is the operative part of their entire article:

“They (black money holders) will pay a small, one-time fine of 4%, while 50% of the domestic holdings (100% of foreign cash/ near cash holdings) will need to be invested in two large government funds — one for infrastructure and the other for bank recapitalisation. The amounts thus invested will be locked for seven years with a compound interest of 4% per annum. Post redemption, the amounts and the interest thereon can be used freely for any lawful purposes in India”

Let’s get this right – the authors want a “small one-time fine of 4%”. *Four percent only*. And then 50% of that money will be locked for 7 years, after which they can enjoy the fruits of a 4% compound interest! To make it easier to compare the two schemes already announced by the government and the suggestion published in The Hindu today, let’s look at the following table:

As we can very clearly see, the scheme or the “bold economic” thinking that the authors are suggesting is that the holders of black money be let off with as much minimum penalty as possible! Can you imagine the uproar in the country if the Modi government is seen as this weak in dealing with such people?

A recent increase in the limit from Rs.50,000/- to Rs. 2,00,000/- to declare PAN, while purchasing Jewelery was in itself met with criticism that the government is going soft on black money! Leave the criticism aside – do we really want our government to be so lenient on those with black money? Is this the “bold economic reform” we really want?

The authors seem to have realized this and have therefore proposed the following (emphasis mine):

“While scheme will be generous, come January 1, criminal prosecution should be instituted against Indian residents holding large sums of undisclosed income.”

It continues to be baffling as to how out of touch with reality, the authors and the editors of The Hindu are! Already, registration of more than 2 lakh companies have been cancelled. Over 1 lakh directors of these companies have been disqualified. The Income Tax department is following up on all cases of suspect deposits during the demonetization scheme.

What “criminal prosecution” are the authors talking about? How do they want the government to know about “large sums of undisclosed income”? It is exercises such as demonetization that will help get such information, but clearly the authors seem to be having other ideas that have not been discussed here.

Let’s move on to the second idea they propose:

“Second, ensure that the full extent of the NPA problem is recognised latest by December 31 and that banks make necessary provisions in this regard.”

So this step is to be taken? To know the truth, all we have to do is to refer the following tweet by Ashutosh Muglikar and the table he has attached, which shows what steps the government has taken regarding the NPA (non performing assets) problem.

A total of 8290 suits have been filed as against a total of 8915 wilful defaulters. That’s 93% of the cases, and this data is up to March 31, 2017 only. So while the “bold economic reform” suggests that we figure this problem out by December 31st, the government already has filed cases against 93% of the willful defaulters by March 31st, 2017!

The authors further go on to suggest that “The boards of PSU banks should be recast by bringing in persons with demonstrated professional experience… Boards should be fully empowered decide on loan resolution by way of real restructuring,”. And then “high level committee” to vet and screen “all cases of suspected wrongdoing involving collusion between borrowers and banks in loan resolution”.

This sounds straight out of some movie! With the existing boards taking care of filing cases, the suggestion seems redundant anyway!

We now move on to the third idea:

“Third, accelerate infrastructure investments, especially in agricultural storage/ support infrastructure, in post-harvest processing, water efficiency technologies, extension services etc. to make agriculture more productive.”

Wow – “make agriculture more productive” is the “bold economic reform” being suggested?! Anybody can tell this, so why do we need economists to reiterate such things? There are of course programs that take care of each of those areas the authors mention, but as with everything else, we are being told that this is something brand new that is being suggested.

We now move on to the fourth idea:

“Fourth, facilitate new export engines — ‘Make in India’ and ‘Serve in India’ — with emphasis on defense exports and medical tourism. An ambitious target of $100 billion over the next 10 years can be set…”

Medical tourism looks like an interesting idea. Instead of wasting space discussing about defunct amnesty schemes, they should have elaborated on their proposals for “serve in India”. A simple google search took me to this research article [pdf] – “Make in India – Impact on medical tourism” – which makes for good reading.

Similarly, a simple google search for “Make in India + Defense exports” gives us many links to both defense manufacturing and export. However, given that we spend a lot on imports, the government has put in a lot of focus on defense manufacturing. Nevertheless, it is ideas like this that need more detailed elaboration and discussions, not new “amnesty schemes”!

And finally the fifth idea:

“Lastly, the PM must take a leaf from the book of former Prime Minister, Narasimha Rao – he dared to bring in a technocrat at that time — Dr. Manmohan Singh — to launch economic reforms. That was statesmanship.”

When most of the suggested ideas are already being implemented, what is the need to bring someone like Manmohan Singh? Nonetheless, the authors thus conclude that “Mr. Modi needs fresh and bold economic thinking to steer the future of 1.3 billion aspiring Indians and the next big battle for the ballot in 2019.”

Given how we have seen that most of the ideas mentioned here have already been implemented by Prime Minister Modi, it is safe to conclude that PM Modi has already steered the future of 1.3 billion Indians!

Bihar Congress workers beat up each other, shout ‘Narendra Modi Zindabad’

0

The Bihar unit of the Indian National Congress seems to have become a new source of political drama and embarrassment for their central leadership.

We had recently reported how its former state president, Ashok Choudhary had been expelled by the party, after it was alleged that he was planning a rebellion in the party and wanted to switch over to the JD(U). After his expulsion, he had described his expulsion by Sonia Gandhi as “insulting” to himself and to Dalits.

Now it seems that the Bihar Congress has decided to take things to the next level.

In a drama that happened at party’s office in Patna earlier today, slogans like “Narendra Modi Zindabad” were chanted before a Bihar Congress meeting. On top of it, two groups of party workers, one led by former state President Ashok Choudhary and the other led by current president president Kaukab Quadri, clashed against each other.

From media reports, it turns out that a meeting of state representatives was called by the party, and Ashok Choudhary was excluded from it. It reportedly angered him and he reached the meeting venue at Sadakat Ashram with his supporters. There the party added insult to injury by preventing him from entering the meeting.

As a result of that, the party workers clashed and while the fight was going on, a few workers started their “Narendra Modi Zindabad” chants, which further escalated the matter. Soon the police arrived and controlled the situation.

According to reports, during the fight Ashok Choudhary was manhandled and clothes of his supporters were torn off:

After the whole incident, a heavy police force has been deployed at the Sadakat Ashram. Media persons too were denied entry inside the Ashram after the whole ruckus.

Media reports suggest that after the incident, the Bihar Congress has sent a report to the Congress high-command, and the party may even expel Ashok Choudhary.
