Liberalism 2017 : Vivekananda as sectarian and Aurangazeb as secular

0

Imagine my surprise (or the lack of it):

Leftist propaganda blog Scroll holding Swami Vivekananda responsible for India's sectarian politics

Only the other day, mainstream media, Facebook and Twitter were abuzz with talk of Swami Vivekananda’s historic address in Chicago in 1893. The Prime Minister made it into an event, the people really got into it and a day was spent with Indians proudly talking about the ideals of one of our national icons.

How could the left stay out of the act and just let us be? After all, the man wore saffron robes. How could a leftist just let it pass without spitting at Hindus in the eye?

So left wing propaganda blog Scroll comes out with an article bashing Swami Vivekananda no less, this time declaring that his words laid the foundation for sectarian politics in our country!

Yes, the evils of Indian politics are all due to Swami Vivekananda.

Have you noticed how Nehru and his descendants are never to blame for anything at all? The Nehru dynasty just happens to be the innocent but incredibly lucky ones who just happened to benefit the most from Indian politics. The evils in our politics are all due to ‘others’…  due to anyone but the Dynasty.

Even Swami Vivekananda. The article in Scroll itself is a hodgepodge of haphazard complaints, historical inaccuracies and overstretched analogies aching under the weight of the author’s despair to malign a much respected figure.

But the very fact that such an article would pass muster at the editorial desk of Scroll shows us a certain ruthlessness on the left that Hindus often fail to appreciate. See not the desperate, comical attempts of the leftist author to throw mud at the towering personality of Swami Vivekananda. Instead, look at the steely determination of leftists to take on any challenge, no matter how hard, in their quest to undermine anything that could make a Hindu feel proud about her/his place in the world.

For the leftist cause, every icon, every symbol, every idea that Hindus could hold dear is like a target to be destroyed. Because the left aspires to nothing less than total deracination of Indian Hindus, cutting them off from their history, their legends, their beliefs, their cultures, their celebrations, their icons and their languages.

The cry of Vande Mataram was once so powerful in its expression of will that the British banned it in the streets of Bengal. But in independent India, the leftist complex has worked on Vande Mataram constantly, eroding its iconic status to the point that ‘cosmopolitan minded’ Hindus would probably be ashamed to say it in public today.

The iconography of “Bharat Mata” as a Hindu goddess in Bankim Chandra’s novel Anandamath was ananthema to Indian leftists. So they worked on it till even we Hindus became embarrassed to say it.

A similar sense of shame has been injected into the observance of every Hindu festival on some pretext or another : it could be pollution caused by Diwali, the ‘terror’ spread by Kanwariyas during monsoons or even the ‘terror‘ spread by kids playing Holi. It could be the patriarchal undertones of Rakshabandhan. Or cruelty to bulls or even climbing too high on top of each other during Dahi Handi.

Every time the ‘civilized’ leftist is there just in time to save us Hindus from our own ‘barbaric’ culture.

No matter how stiff the challenge, the left never stops trying. Like turning Vivekananda into a hate figure.

Or turning Aurangazeb into a generous, fair minded, secular ruler. The left is unfazed. If they don’t succeed the first time, they try again. And again and again, until the common Hindu finally bows down to their narrative.

This reminds me of a time some 4-5 years ago when the nation was discussing the Nirbhaya gangrape. Out came The Hindu with a piece that related gangrapes to the masculine posture of Vivekananda in his posters, pictures and statues!

The Hindu blames Swami Vivekananda for rapes

The left knows well that these one or two articles will not destroy Swami Vivekananda. The key is that the left never gives up and is continually testing the waters, pushing the envelope little by little, making small gains here and there every day.

And these tiny everyday gains add up as the years pass and the years turn into decades. ‘Cosmopolitan’ Hindus are probably ashamed of saying Vande Mataram today… 20 years from now they might well be ashamed of Swami Vivekananda in much the same way.

Perhaps one of the disadvantages of being such an old civilization is that Hindus have become too stoic. Our civilization really has seen it all and as such Hindu society is oddly comfortable, convinced that we will last forever.

Some people on Twitter told me that Swami Vivekananda is too great a figure to be tarnished by “dwarfs”.

But that’s too cozy a way of looking at things. There is no rock that can withstand forever the lashes of the waves breaking upon it. The same goes for ancient civilization surrounded from all sides by an angry, rising sea.

Assam teacher accuses her colleagues of forcing her to eat beef and convert to Islam

0

A teacher belonging to a school in Morigaion district of Assam has alleged that her senior colleagues had forced her to eat beef and convert to Islam.

The teacher had reportedly joined the Lalipar Boys Lower Primary School in July of last year. This school is said to be located in a remote Muslim majority area.

According to reports, a senior of hers continuously used to ask her to convert to Islam and marry her. Initially she had taken things lightly, but they worsened over time. She then complained to the head teacher Nurul Islam. He allegedly not just supported the male teacher but also along with his wife, allegedly forced her to eat beef. When she reportedly complained to the School Management Committee, she was rebuked by several of its members, who claimed that she was maligning the image of the now accused.

When she started to look for a transfer, she alleges she was also abused and threatened with dire consequences like rape and murder. As a result of it, she reportedly stopped going to the school 20 days ago.

To search for a possible remedy, she wrote to the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for action. Now a probe finally seems to have been ordered, which will be carried out by the Assam police.

According to the Morigaon Deputy Commissioner Hamen Das, they are taking the matter seriously and two inquiries have been ordered regarding the matter. One inquiry would be carried out by the Inspector of Schools to check whether the teacher was a regular or not. The second one would be carried out by the Superintendent of Police regarding the beef and conversion allegations.

The incidents of forced conversions have arisen in educational institutes in the past. We had reported how teachers of a government residential school in Mewat district of Haryana had been suspended or transferred after they had forced 2 Hindu students to offer Namaz. Incidentally this action against the teachers had resulted in a protest by the villagers of the Muslim majority area.

Congress leader Manish Tewari spreads lies about Christian priest rescued from ISIS captivity

0

In March 2016, Congress leader Manish Tewari had tweeted about an alleged crucification of Father Thomas Uzhunnali by the ISIS and ‘questioned’ Indian government’s inaction because “he was a Christian”.

Unless Tewari believes that it’s possible for a human being to come back to life after crucification, he was clearly spreading lies, because Father Thomas is alive.

It was confirmed earlier this week that Father Thomas Uzhunnali was rescued from Yemen with help of governments of Oman, Saudi Arabia and the Vatican.

External Affairs Minister then re-tweeted her tweets where other Christians were rescued from conflict zones like Yemen and Kabul amongst others, in a clear response to allegation of Tewari about a possible bias against Christians:

It should be recalled that the Prime Minister too had spoken about rescue and release of Indian Christians held captive in conflict zones, yet Manish Tewari thought that the government was not rescuing Christians:

On getting called out for his mischievous remarks, Tewari then shifted goal-post and resorted to name-calling Swaraj. He called her “Minister of Counsellor Affairs and cheerleader” for PM Modi.

He even accused Swaraj of not having any role to play in rescue of Father Thomas Uzhannali, whom he himself had claimed to have been crucified over a year ago. He forgot that Swaraj herself had thanked the governments of Oman and Yemen, yet the Congress leader suggested that there was an attempt to deny the credit to these countries:

He clearly seems unapologetic about spreading fake story about Father Thomas Uzhannali’s crucification and blaming Modi government for not doing anything about it because he is a Christian.

After all when a friendly mainstream media doesn’t call out your lies and propaganda, it becomes easy to be brazen.

Security at Bodh Gaya increased amidst fear of ‘revenge attack’ for Rohingya Muslims

0

Security in and around the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya in Bihar has been increased as intelligence agencies belonging to both the state and central governments have issued alerts expressing possibility of the Buddhist temple being at the target of Islamic terrorists.

The temple is frequented both by Hindus and Buddhists and is especially busy currently with the season conducive for tourists as well as due to the ongoing pitrapaksha mela. Terrorists could target the temple around this time for maximum casualties, security agencies fear.

The temple was earlier targeted in July 2013, when a series of low intensity bomb blasts in the temple complex had left 5 people injured, including two Buddhist monks. An arrested suspect named Mohammed Umair Siddiqui had later revealed that the attack was targeted at international Buddhist tourists to avenge the killings of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

Siddiqui, a member of the banned SIMI and Indian Mujahideen organisations, had also revealed during the interrogation that the terrorists involved in bombing the Bodh Gaya temple later went on to target an election rally of Narendra Modi at Patna in October 2013, where six people were killed and many injured.

Security agencies fear that such groups could target Mahabodhi temple again, especially when the issue of Rohingya Muslims is making international headlines, and assorted activists in India are putting pressure on the Indian government to not deport illegal Rohingya immigrants. These fears are based on inputs from agencies as well as arrest of two suspects on Wednesday from a cyber café in Gaya.

One of these two suspects, Tausif Ahmed Khan, is also a suspect in the Ahmedabad blasts case of 2008, where more than 50 people were killed. A team of Gujarat police and NIA (National Investigation Agency) are reported to reach Gaya later today for further interrogation of the arrested terrorist.

Tausif is suspected to have been living in Bangladesh for a long time and visiting India through Malda district of West Bengal. Thousands of Rohingya Muslims are reported to have crossed into India through the Bangladesh border in West Bengal.

Police suspects that the two might have been planning to attack Mahabodhi temple to protest against alleged atrocities on Rohingya Muslims by Buddhists in Myanmar.

As a result, a high alert has been issued and authorities have been told to keep a tight vigil on developments and movements in and around the temple. To make sure that the security persons are focused on keeping vigil, use of mobile phones by security persons in the temple complex has been banned.

Discredited cop Sanjiv Bhatt tweets morphed photo of PM Modi, disregards dignity of woman

0

Controversial IPS officer from Gujarat, Sanjiv Bhatt, is again in news for all the wrong reasons. He has stooped down to lower levels to show his anti-Modi stand.

Following Japanese PM Abe Shinzo’s visit to Ahmedabad, Bhatt tweeted a photo of PM Modi, PM Abe, PM Abe’s wife and morphed image of PM Modi’s estranged wife Jashodaben added in the image.

Soon, the anti-Modi trolls, who also claim themselves to be feminists while masquerading as journalists, retweeted this tweet without considering that they are taking potshots at the estranged wife of the PM, a woman herself.

Troll journalists with left leaning publications retweeted this, perhaps to show solidarity with suspended cop.

However, some also pointed out the viciousness in his tweet. He had not only used abusive words for the PM but also used his estranged wife’s picture to score a point in his own personal vendetta.

In past too he has lowered the bar for decency for himself with every hateful tweet that he has tweeted.

Earlier, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh had tweeted the same image and got called out for the same.

Not only does he get joy out of making vile comments about the Prime Minister, he also derives pleasure out of natural calamities.

This was the day Gujarat saw one of the worst floods in decade and Sabarmati Riverfront was flooded.

Earlier, too, he had spread anti-India propaganda on Twitter on more than one occasions. Sanjiv Bhatt has been a known offender and even the Supreme Court of India has called him a liar. Despite all this, he continues to be a favourite amongst the so called liberal journalists of India like Rana Ayyub and Swati Chaturvedi amongst others.

But then, he also goes ahead and describes himself and his gang in his own words.

Yogi govt stops funding of 46 madrasas for not adhering to regulations

0

Recently it was reported that the Yogi government had been taking steps to ensure transparency in the state funded madrasas. These included having to register on the newly launched “Madrasa Portal” of the state government. The madrasas were required to upload the details of the teachers, support staff and also were required to provide infrastructure details along with photographs.

During the launch of the online portal the UP Waqf Minister, Mohsin Raza had stated that they had received many complaints of irregularities in the madrasas. Now reports have claimed that out of a total 19,000 madrasas in the state, just 3000 have registered themselves on the portal.

As a response to this lackadaisical approach by madarsas, the Yogi government has reportedly stopped the funding of 46 fully aided madrasas in the state. These 46 madrasas belong to Kanpur, Kushinagar, Kannauj, Mau, Azamgarh, Maharajganj, Siddhartha Nagar, Mahoba, Shravasti, Banaras, Faizabad, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Barabanki, Sant Kobirnagar and Jhansi districts. There are about 560 fully aided madrasas in the state.

It turns out that a committee comprising of a district magistrate, district minority officer and basic education officer had in April sought the details of the aided madrasas the funding of these 46 madrasas, which was consequently stopped after the lapses were detected.

These irregularities had reportedly been revealed after a 2 month long investigation and the issue seems to be that these institutions weren’t following the necessary infrastructure guidelines. These madrasas were reportedly being run in rooms smaller or larger than the prescribed limit and some were even being run in verandas. These madrasas used to receive an average grant of at-least about 3-4 lakh rupees per month and it also included the salaries of the teachers.

The total grant aid stopped by the government reportedly amounts to about Rs 2 crores. The information revealed on Wednesday also claimed that salary of teachers has also been stopped. It remains to be seen if the funding is resumed if and when these madrasas manages to comply with the necessary regulations.

Was a ‘dummy candidate’ used in Delhi University Students’ Union elections?

0

Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections were held earlier this month in which the student wing of Indian National Congress, National Students Union of India (NSUI) won the President and Vice President posts.

However, questions has been raised on the candidature of one Raja Choudhary, an independent candidate, who contested for the president post against ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad, student wing of the Rashtriya Sevak Sangh) candidate Rajat Choudhary.

Not only was his name similar sounding to ABVP’s candidate, his pamphlet said he represented Akhil Bharatiya Vidya Parishad, which abbreviates to ABVP. Raja got over 3,000 votes whereas Rajat, ABVP candidate lost by 2,000 votes.

Speculations are rife that dummy candidate was fielded by NSUI to cut into the votes of ABVP candidate Rajat.

However, the actual reason to worry for all political parties is the fact that NOTA (none of the above) came third in all the posts.

This is not the first time similar sounding candidates were fielded against someone. In 2014 General Elections too, the BJP candidate from Mahasamund, Chattisgarh, Chandulal Sahu was in a fix when 10 independent candidates with same name had filed nominations from the same constituency. That time too, it was alleged Congress leader Ajit Jogi’s hand in it.

Meanwhile, Congress has credited the DUSU election win of NSUI to Rahul Gandhi’s speech in University of California, Berkeley.

Ramjas College professor held guilty in 2007 sexual harassment case

0

Dr. BN Ray, former vice-principal of Ramjas College, Delhi University, who was accused of sexually harassing 12 male students in September, 2007, has been held guilty. The verdict comes 10 years after he committed the crime.

Dr. Ray had been given regular retirement in 2008 and he has been enjoying post-retirement benefits. He has also been working as senior professor at an institute in Bhubaneswar.

According to details of the case, back in September, 2007, as many as 12 male students, primarily from the North East, had alleged before gathering of 700 students in an auditorium that Dr. Ray had asked for “sexual favours” from them. While he was removed from the post of the vice-principle and not allowed to teach, he was still on the roll for months. The governing body had settled for his compulsory retirement.

However, the left leaning professor was found guilty for sexual abuse after 10 years of filing the complaint.

The report says he is not fit to be employed in any of the institutes of the country. The petitioners have approached the high court claiming contempt of the orders passed on the lines that he still continues to be on board as faculty at the institute in Bhubaneshwar.

Rajdeep Sardesai gets called out for defending Rahul Gandhi

0

Speaking at the University of California, Berkeley, yesterday, Rahul Gandhi had defended dynasty politics as accepted way in democratic India. However, the League of Dynasty Defenders were armed to take on any criticism that comes Rahul Gandhi’s way.

Which is quite contradictory to what had actually happened there.

A lady in the audience wanted to ask Rahul Gandhi a question, but was not allowed to do so by the moderators who were asking only filtered questions.

While Sardesai claimed that Gandhi took all the questions in Berkeley and how other leaders should also do the same, Twitterati pointed out how that was not really the case. Those who saw the interview said how the audience was not allowed to ask the question directly, but a moderator would do so, which is not usually the case whenever a talk is hosted at UC Berkeley.

Sardesai then tried to spin it by quoting a professor who was supposedly present at the event saying the question the woman was asking was already asked.

Except, that’s not how it happened.

However, he got called out and Rahul Gandhi’s talk was compared to Sardesai’s interview with Sonia Gandhi which had soft questions like when did Sonia Gandhi first meet Indira Gandhi.

Ironically, Sardesai’s support failed to impress Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi, who shared a screenshot of WhatsApp forward.

Sardesai, who seemed miffed at his father and father in law (Sagarika Ghose’s father, Bhaskar Ghose, is former Director General of Doordarshan) dragged into the controversy on nepotism, responded how his father being a cricketer didn’t quite ensure that he could become a cricketer as well as merit mattered, not surname.

Also important to note here is that Sardesai’s wife Sagarika Ghose has recently written a book on Indira Gandhi calling her most powerful Prime Minister of India.

Gujarat to Gauri: Mainstream Media and Journalistic Ethics

0

In late 1990s – early 2000s, the new, private news media was green. It gifted the exciting unknown to explore and the opportunity to present stories, and shape the country’s thoughts. Both journalists and audience were expectant with the new phenomenon. But, what transpired was a total let down.

Back in 2002, when this newly discovered private ‘mainstream media’ was voraciously covering the Gujarat riots, many millions in the country were perturbed. The whole of India was concerned about what was transpiring in the state – indeed so. But, what went unstated for a long time was that an equal amount of unexpressed, subterranean anguish with the pattern of coverage was also running deep. Millions felt the reporting was biased but, then, that was a time when the national discourse came to be set only by a select coterie of journalists, who, many felt displayed poor sense of responsibility.

A few years later, before social media assumed the role that it eventually did, someone had suggested to me the necessity of building something that allowed people to express their opinions on mainstream media itself. He was certain, if that happened, journalists would come under fire and scrutiny from general public. During the day, I had discounted the thought, considering the idea too conspiratorial. It was not until later that I realized how keen the observation was and how suffocated must India have been for these long years.

It is heartening that technology progressed drastically and social media went on to play a historic role in not just democratizing information but, also bringing media under that constant scrutiny. Very recently, a well known journalist wrote that Indian journalism is being influenced by the ‘pressure to be popular‘. To me, that is an unfair statement to make. It trivializes a much wider phenomenon that is transpiring. A transition has happened indeed, and still underway.

The incumbent ‘Aman ki Asha‘ journalism has been rattled. For the first time perhaps in recent history, the general population is empowered just about enough to directly confront unethical mischief makers. And so vigorous has been the fight back that we are beginning to see a tone down from even some such incumbents.

Putting it in a single sentence, perhaps for the first time, post-globalisation journalism is being subjected to the journalistic norms of ethics. And that isn’t happening through the Press Council or a theoretical self monitoring mechanism. Leveraging technology, by and large, people have begun holding media accountable. And this is the heat the mainstream incumbents of the industry are feeling. Blaming trolls and fringe groups displays a very superficial understanding. Rather, it is the conduct of the media and press themselves that has tarnished the repute of the profession.

Specific instances are not hard to find. Media’s decade long undeterred obsession with Gujarat riots and the incessant projection of Modi as a mass murderer despite people repeatedly reposing their trust with him; the suspicious propagation of Hindu terror when enough was known to suggest ulterior motivations for the same; Soft corner for Kashmiri separatists while simultaneous indifference to Kashmiri pandits; Radia tapes; and many others.

Latest in the sequence of such events has been the Gauri Lankesh murder which the mainstream media latched onto almost as a lifeline, ostentatiously for the sake of preservation of free expression and dissent. Honestly, too few had heard of Gauri Lankesh. I had not either, until the murder happened. I felt bad about the incident. But, I felt worse when a crime had been twisted to the effect of suggesting ‘stifling of dissent’. This was preposterous and malicious. Worse still was when sections of journalists and intellectuals took it on themselves to actively circulate suggestions on the involvement of an entire ideology.

This is appalling. Not because a journalist was killed. Journalists have been killed in the past – in more gruesome manners, and perhaps even employing state machinery. Jagendra Singh, a Hindi journalist, for example, was killed by setting on fire in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Neither is it appalling because dissent is being stifled, which is actually laughable. If at all, the expression that is being allowed to dissent of all kinds, even vulgar, is perhaps at all time high.

It is appalling because, sections of journalists have blatantly failed to uphold the basic ethics of journalism. Publishing articles and conducting debates that were not only not based on facts but, even virtually deflecting suggestions that pointed to a Naxal angle is strongly indicative of suspect intent. Even days after the murder happened, the media has not been able to produce a single shred of evidence to base their allegations on.

And, it is still more appalling because at a time when two major events of global significance concerning India are underway – the trend reversal of 70 years old Indo-China relations post Doklam and the future India stares at in the context of the Rohingyan immigration onslaught, journalists suspiciously promoted the bogey of ‘stifling of dissent’ as against the possibility of India’s future changing forever.

With the growing pace of production and consumption of news as with any other commodity, it has become increasingly easy for journalists to function with vested interests, in violation of journalistic ethics. By hurling unsubstantiated allegations on an entire ideology that the vast majority of Indians have voted to government, journalists have only proved how they are using their privileged positions as custodians of the national discourse to perpetuate their biases.

Not just is this conduct example of unscrupulous intolerance towards a competing thought stream, rather it is also the unethical employment of resources at the disposal of media/press to influence public perception. License for irresponsible journalism cannot be sought in the guise of free expression.

Social media has done a tremendous service. By giving voice to the people, it has begun imposing checks, even if indirectly on the mainstream. The pressure that journalism today is feeling, is the resounding ask by a billion people to be responsible and honest, nothing more, nothing less. The journalistic fraternity needs to understand are a part of India and together with the billion plus people, they too stand at a cusp from where all indications point to India taking off. The fraternity must decide which side of this historic period they would like to find themselves on.
