My real life experience with demonetisation – A CA explains

0

I am not an economist. I do not have a fancy degree in Business Management. Neither do I qualify to be called a “Business Journalist”. I cannot give you “macro” or “micro” policy analysis. I am just an ordinary Chartered Accountant and I can only tell you what I have seen since 8th November 2016 when India plunged into the era of demonetisation.

I neither have empirical data nor do I have fancy statistics. I just have a range of anecdotes to give you my worldview about demonetisation.

So about me. I have my office in a Tier 2 city. I cannot claim to have a huge set of clients, but over the years I have built a fair number of clientele mostly in the small and medium enterprise range. These are my experiences with them since that fateful November night:

8 PM, November 8th: As I was watching TV, lightning struck via PM Modi’s speech. In the first few hours I did not fully grasp the widespread impact it would have over the next few months.

9th to 14th November: Flooded with calls from my clients. Most of them panicking as to what they do with their cash. With no legal or formal guidance available, my only advice was:

If you can explain the cash, deposit it in the bank. Keep you proofs ready. If you can’t, think of ways of offloading it to someone else. Last resort, destroy it.

15th to 30th November: Clients keep turning up at the office, asking for specific guidance as to what to do with their cash. They admit that it is largely “black” or “unaccounted”. For any solution, I first ask them the amount of “dirty money”. Some hesitate, some do not disclose, some are upfront. In most cases, the cash with these people was at least 3 to 5 times more than what I expected them to hold. I kept repeating my past maxim: deposit it in the bank if you can explain.

Now there’s another way you can explain them. As soon as you deposit, be prepared to offer it as income. Try to claim that sales shot up during October or November, and hence you suddenly amassed so much cash. The consequence of this would be 2 fold:

  • Pay Income Tax on this amount at 33% odd (including interest)
  • Pay VAT or Service Tax on the same at a median rate of 12.5% odd.

Thus, even if the “black” money was “converted” into white, my client would have to bear a loss of approximately 45-46% on the amount deposited. This was just to avoid any sort of detailed scrutiny.

Some obeyed, some thought they will go unnoticed and deposited “black” money without caring. Some deposited the “black” money simply because they did not have any choice and they would rather take a chance of salvaging some of it than outright destroying it.

25th January to 05th February – The first “surgical strike”:  Many of my clients received emails from the Income Tax Department, in which details of cash deposited by them were mentioned, and the source for these deposits was asked. Some people with cash deposits, as low as Rs 5 lakhs were picked up for scrutiny.

They wanted a very elaborate reply. If the cash had been received from identifiable persons, then my client had to furnish the persons’ names, addresses and most importantly the PAN. If not, at least name and address was expected. If the payers were completely untraceable, at least source was expected.

Obviously, reporting as many PANs as possible was the safest, since then the IT department would chase those PAN holders, instead of my client. We replied to the best of our ability for as many clients as possible.

15th to 31st March: Of the above clients, few received summons from the Investigation wing of the IT Department. These clients were asked to produce all evidence, sales bills, books of accounts etc, substantiating the reply we had given.

31st March was the last date of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY) scheme which was in effect an amnesty scheme for people who had deposited “black money”. Via the scheme, they would have to pay 50% of the undisclosed income as fine and put away 25% of the money in a FD for 4 years which would be refunded without any interest at the end of that period. Doing so they could avoid prosecution, especially under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

We began visiting the IT Investigation wing officers, to present our case. We would generally have to wait in line for 4-5 hours every-time, to visit the officer. And every time, you could see all the people waiting along with you. I saw many local big shots, some politically exposed people, and many other CAs, all being made to wait for hours, sometimes until they came up with a satisfactory reply.

In my case, 4 of my clients ended up declaring substantial money under the PMGKY scheme. 1 of them was a politically influential person.

31st March: The Government amends the Income Tax Returns. Now all tax payers have to compulsorily disclose the amount of cash deposited during demonetisation period, in each and every bank account they have. The return would just not go through without this data. Data, which I was sure will be mined and used for scrutiny.

6th May: The Government notified that all companies would have to declare a statement of cash which showed how the Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes were utilised or deposited during the demonetisation period. As an auditor, I was expected to certify this too. Basically, it was another means of gathering information.

15th to 31st July – The second “surgical strike”: Few more clients received notices similar to those sent in January. In some cases, the old clients got additional notices for other bank accounts. The data of some banks was probably just flowing in to the Income Tax Department. We went through the entire process again.

My observations through this cycle of audits: As we are now auditing the accounts for FY 2016-17 when demonetisation happened, many clients are showing a spike in sales in October to December months. The answer is always the same: to accommodate the “black” cash. As mentioned earlier, due to Income Tax and other indirect taxes, such inflated sales have been subjected to 45% odd tax. If not for demonetisation all this money would just continued to circulate far away from the tax net.

So have all the people who deposited “black” money been caught? No. Did people engineer ways and means to camouflage their cash deposits via shell companies etc? Yes. But has the Income tax Department stopped asking questions? No. And if you ask me, the questions have just begun.

I repeat, I am no economist, but with the little experience I have had with my clients, and from the stories I have been told by my fellow Chartered Accountants, many businesses have been caught on the wrong foot. While all of the above are one-time implications, we are still waiting to see how this will play out in the long run, since people who were showing low incomes for so many years, have suddenly shown a much higher income this year. As the months pass, I would not be surprised if there are more “surgical strikes”.

Is Karnataka police carrying out a prejudiced probe in the Gauri Lankesh murder case?

0

Journalist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead by unknown assailants on 6th September outside her home. Ever since the murder, the leftists have tried every possible trick in the book to somehow hold the Right Wing complicit in the matter. First they outright accused the Right Wing of being responsible for the crime and when that claim started to fall flat, they spun the narrative to blame the right for allegedly saying mean things about her.

While this whole cacophony was playing on, the Karnataka police had set up a Special Investigative Team (SIT) to probe the murder. This team also included two Scotland Yard (The Metropolitan Police Service which polices most parts of London) investigators who are said to be specialists in carrying out a technical investigation. The had incidentally also sought Scotland Yard’s help in the Kalburgi murder case but it is still unsolved.

People hoped that the police would not be influenced by the din created by the left-liberals and would carry out a thorough and impartial probe. It was reported that the SIT would again question Gauri Lankesh’s brother and also would question 2 former Naxal leaders. It was also reported that a Sanatan Sanstha angle was also being probed.

But now it seems that the investigation is taking a peculiar turn after people are claiming that the police is gearing up to question them just because they had involuntarily “crossed paths” with Gauri Lankesh:

Vikram Sampath is an author, musician, and winner of Sahita Akademi’s ‘yuva puraskar’ who is also the founder of the Bangalore Literature festival. Sampath claims that the article in question is over two years and he had never even met her.

If that is the case then questions might be asked about the rationale behind the police’s decision. Is the police operating with the logic that anyone who was remotely criticised at any point of time by Lankesh is a potential suspect?

If that is indeed the case then not only would the probe be virtually limitless, it would also chiefly make Right Wingers and even people like PM Modi suspects and in the matter as Lankesh was routinely critical of them.

It is also insinuated that Sampath fits the bill of a “right winger” because he in the past has held views contrary to the left by opposing the Award Wapsi Campaign and also by not agreeing to the glorification of Tipu Sultan. The left was so aggrieved by his “rebellion” that they had even forced him to disassociate himself from the Bangalore literature festival.

Many found such a step by the police to be extremely strange:

People also wondered if it would have far reaching implications for Sampath:

This isn’t the only time the whole investigation has been in the news for the wrong reasons. As reported by us people like pop-historian Ramachandra Guha had allegedly tried to prejudice the probe by linking the murder to the RSS and the BJP in various media outlets. He as a result was served with a legal notice by lawyer Tejasvi Surya who is also a member of the Karnataka BJP Yuva Morcha.

Speaking to OpIndia, Surya confirmed that his legal notice had reached Guha on Thursday evening by registered post, and that he will wait for a few days for Guha to tender apology, failing which he will file a defamation case.

Congress now drags diplomatic relations of India in domestic politics

0

Following Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo’s visit to Ahmedabad to lay the foundation stone for Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train, in an apparent confusion, Congress has claimed credit for the bullet train as well as derided Modi for the same in same breath.

Yesterday, in their #KnowYourLegacy poll campaign, which has previously been a laughing stock for gaffes, in an attempt to take credit for the bullet train, Congress put up a question asking its followers which Indian PM made first joint statement with the Japanese PM to start the bullet train:

While the correct answer is Dr. Manmohan Singh, most voted for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress social media team was left with an egg on their face.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari, who recently spread lies about Christian priest rescued from ISIS captivity, questioned why was Abe Shinzo hosted in Ahmedabad and not in Delhi, the national capital?

Tiwari, in his desperation forgot that the laying of foundation stone for a bullet train between Ahmedabad and Mumbai could be done either in Ahmedabad or in Mumbai, not in Delhi.

In a desperate hope to salvage the situation, Congress released a note which said that Abe Shinzo’s visit to Ahmedabad was a pre-poll gimmick to woo the voters by ‘prematurely unveiling a bullet train project’. Congress social media account again got ridiculed for the same.

They also got called out for the brazenly insulting the head of another nation by reducing him to an election gimmick.

To reduce Prime Minister of Japan to “electioneering” is quite demeaning.

Muslim girl gets pulled out of her school as she was reciting Gita there

0

Firdosh, a 6 year old Muslim girl had made the news in May, after it was reported that she had secured the first position a Bhagwad Gita recital competition. A total of 56 students had participated in the sub-junior category in the Sovaniya Sikhyashram school in Kendrapara.

According to the headmistress, the students recite Sanskrit shlokas from Bhagwad Gita every day at school and Firdosh being a quick learner had memorised many of them and had articulately recited them at school.

Such an incident might have been cited as an example of the “composite culture” which is said to be prevalent in the Indian society but now months later it turns out that her family members and the Muslim community didn’t take kindly to her achievement.

According to reports, the girl, Firdosh was taken out of her school by her parents who were reportedly pressurised to do so by the clergies. According to Arifa Bibi the mother of the girl, the clergies had issued a diktat that they do so, after they had come to know that the girl was reciting Gita instead of learning the Koran. Even their relatives had expressed unhappiness.

Firdosh and her brother were reportedly the only Muslim students in that school before they were pulled out to join another school. A moulvi of a local mosque has even called the decision to be correct, as according to him moral education and not religious education should be given at schools.

This isn’t the only time Muslims have faced backlash from their society for indulging in “Hindu practices”:

  • It was reported how two Muslim sisters from Kerala (one of who later topped Madras University’s course in Bharatanatyam), used to face regular exclusion from the Muslim community because they preformed “Hindu dance forms”.
  • A Muslim couple in Kerala had faced social boycott from their community for taking care of a Hindu snake temple for the last 17 years which was a part of the land given to them by their ancestors. They worshipped the temple in secret for 13 years after which their community members came to know about it via their daughter-in-law. As a result they were reportedly criticised during Mosque speeches and were also ostracised from the community.
  • Recently Bihar minister Kuhrshid Alam was reportedly asked to remarry his wife as him chanting Jai Sri Ram had meant that his marriage had become void. This was because, he was first ostracised from Islam because of a fatwa issued by a Muslim cleric which according to other experts also meant, annulment of his marriage.
  • In the past a fatwa was also issued against Salman Khan’s family for celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi at their home which they had telecast live.

Repeat a lie a thousand times and it becomes the truth – this WSJ columnist tells us how

0

“Repeat a lie a thousand times and it becomes the truth” – this is supposed to be a Nazi propaganda technique, though the Nazis claimed that this was something the Englishmen said and practiced between the first and the second world wars. Joseph Goebbels, the Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany, had written the following in January 1941:

“The essential English leadership secret does not depend on particular intelligence. Rather, it depends on a remarkably stupid thick-headedness. The English follow the principle that when one lies, one should lie big, and stick to it. They keep up their lies, even at the risk of looking ridiculous.”

Whether the English were as shrewd as the Germans in spreading propaganda is a debate not relevant to this article, but what is especially remarkable is the last line that Goebbels had written in the aforementioned paragraph. It can be paraphrased a little to read as a commandment for what is now known as “Goebbelsian propaganda”:

“Keep up the lies, even at the risk of looking ridiculous.”

It is so typical of what the so-called left-liberals do in India. Only that they have an added ability to not look ridiculous, for they command all the institutions that shape the narrative and build popular perception. In fact, thanks to this Nazi like control on media and academic institutions, they have mastered this art more perfectly than anyone during the second world war could do.

One of the biggest example of perfection of this Goebbelsian propaganda by the so-called left-liberals of India is the believed story that Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the former Prime Minister of India and a towering BJP leader, had praised Indira Gandhi and likened her to Goddess Durga for her tough stand during the Bangladesh liberation war.

This lie – created to give Indira Gandhi, the founding mother of Congress-left ecosystem, a larger than life image – has been repeated literally millions of times. So much so, that even a majority of BJP supporters believe this; some of them believe that Vajpayee was being magnanimous, while others believe Vajpayee was ‘weak’ in praising Indira.

But here is the truth. Vajpyee never compared Indira with Durga. Watch this video where he himself denies issuing any such statement:

This is one of thousands, if not millions, of lies, which have been converted into truth by the Congress-left ecosystem. One of the modern lies, which have become almost truth, is that Narendra Modi promised to deposit 15 lakh rupees into every Indian’s bank account. Remember, they keep on repeating it, even at the risk of looking ridiculous.

Now yet another lie is being repeated by the Congress-left ecosystem so that it becomes the truth. The lie that some left-leaning leaders and activists were killed by members of the “Sangh Parivar”. The lie is being repeated again in wake of murder of Gauri Lankesh, a left-leaning activist who was out on bail after being convicted for printing lies in her publication.

Among the persons who spread this lie was Nehru-bhakt Ramchandra Guha, who is introduced as a historian and cricket expert on TV news channels. While commenting on murder of Lankesh, Guha declared that the murderers of such leaders and activists were from Sangh Parivar.

This is what he said in an interview to a left-wing propaganda blog:

“It is very likely that her murderers came from the same Sangh Parivar from which the murderers of Dabholkar, Pansare and Kalburgi came.”

You can hear Guha saying the same in the following clip:

So it is very clear – unless you failed your English comprehension tests during your high school – that Guha was expressing no doubt about affiliations of killers of Dabholkar, Pansare and Kalburgi – three individuals killed over last 4 years, two of them in states that were ruled by the Congress party (law and order is a state subject). He declares that the murderers of those three individuals were from Sangh Parivar, and the murderers of Lankesh are “very likely” to be from Sangh Parivar too.

It must be noted that Guha declares the murderers of Dabholkar, Pansare and Kalburgi as being from Sangh Parivar, even though police investigations in all three cases have failed to track the assassins or prove anyone guilty.

In one of the cases (that of Pansare), “very likely” under political pressure, police arrested a couple of people belonging to some so-called right-wing organisations, but the arrested suspects had to be let off as there was no proof of their involvement (in fact, one arrested person was in different city on the day murder took place). Other two cases are entirely unsolved.

So Guha was peddling a lie about the identity of the killers.

“Very likely” he hoped that his lie will be repeated thousand times and made a truth by his cronies, who are known as journalists, activists, and ‘liberals’. Except that there was little spanner thrown in his plans; a person from BJP Youth Wing decided to send a legal notice to Guha for making defamatory and libelous comments.

It is clear that Guha was making an assertion in absence of corroborative evidence, for investigations in none of the three murders he talks of have found anyone from Sangh Parivar guilty.

So how do you support a lying Guha?

By lying again.

This is what is being done by a WSJ (Wall Street Journal) columnist named Sadanand Dhume.

Dhume wrote an article in WSJ and lied about what Guha said (which earned him a legal notice). While Guha declared in no uncertain terms that killers of Dabholkar, Pansare and Kalburgi were from Sangh Parivar, Dhume claimed that Guha had merely expressed a doubt about killers of those three.

This is what Dhume wrote:

“On Monday, a BJP official threatened a lawsuit against the prominent historian Ramachandra Guha. In an interview, Mr. Guha had declared that it was “very likely” that Lankesh’s killers—as well as those of other rationalists—belonged to the “Sangh Parivar,” a term loosely used to describe the RSS and its offshoots, including the BJP.”

Now go back to what Guha had said about the killers of Dabholkar, Pansare and Kalburgi (whom Dhume refers to as ‘rationalists’ in the above paragraph). Guha had used the term “very likely” only for Lakesh’s killers, not for killers of “other rationalists”, whom he declared – without expressing any doubt – as belonging to Sangh Parivar. Assuming that the WSJ columnist had passed his high school English tests, this is pure propaganda by Dhume.

Essentially, Dhume lies to hide Guha’s lies.

And technically, that lie has been repeated as many times that article in WSJ has been read by people. Assuming that Dhume is not a failed unpopular writer, it can be safely assumed that Dhume’s lies have been repeated a thousand times, and now it has become a truth – at least in his own head.

Because he has been repeating the same lie about Guha’s statement on Twitter too; for example, this exchange with an independent columnist.

Remember the golden rule of Goebbelsian propaganda? “Keep up the lies, even at the risk of looking ridiculous.” That’s what Dhume is doing.

But we must not allow him free pass. Least we can do is to tell him how ridiculous he is sounding. And hope that he has some shame, which “very likely” he has not.

Truth behind UP govt waiving farmer loans of 19 paisa

0

Since last two days, Twitter is abuzz about the “insensitivity” of Uttar Pradesh Government for waiving farmers’ loans ranging between a few paisa to as low as Rs. 10 and Rs. 37.

However, truth seems far from what is reported and peddled.

As a Twitter user pointed out, it is a trick reporting. The Twitter user elaborates that the total outlay of loan waiver was Rs. 36,000 crore, which was to be exhausted. The calculations were carried out according to a formula and all payments were done digitally, to remove possibility of frauds. While larger amount of loans were waived off, in some cases, many farmers had paid off their loans in the current year, where only fraction of the amount payable was due.

As per this report, if a farmer had Rs. 51,050.9 in their loan account, and the farmer paid off Rs. 51,050 in the current year, the balance 90 paisa would still show as outstanding loan amount. Since 90 paisa is not in circulation, the amount will keep reflecting as outstanding loan balance. In order to avoid the same, 90 paisa were waived off. Hence, the farmer would get loan waiver certificate of 90 paisa.

As per reports, 11.9 lakh small and marginal farmers were given loan waiver certificate of Rs. 7,317 crore. Of these, about 11.25 lakh farmers have received loan waiver of over Rs. 10,000.

The loan waiver is for those loans which were borrowed before 31st March, 2016. After long deliberation, the government has started the loan waiver from 17th August onward. According to Gaon Connection report, Kannauj resident Rajesh Shukhla, in 2016, he had borrowed Rs. 62,000. He got loan of Rs. 315 waived. He claims the farmers are being misguided by some people.

So it appears that an algorithm was used to waive every non-zero outstanding amount, and some minuscule amounts also qualified for that, which was cherry-picked by some media reports to make a sensational story.

Hence, it seems like it was just a mischievous and click-bait headline by the media to grab eyeballs.

The Swastika in Charlottesville: the symbol needs to be reclaimed from Nazis

0

Be it Martin Luther King Jr’s fascination with Satyagraha or Robert Oppenheimer’s recitation from the Bhagavad Gita, any reference to the legacy of his ancestors in a far off land is sure to stir up strong feelings in the heart of an individual of Indian extraction.

The Charlottesville affair, which has been making headlines for quite some time now, does not have any remotely Indian connection whatsoever. Yet, a symbol with an unmistakably Indian name kept surfacing in connection with the events. I am referring to the Swastika here. It was sheer frustration to witness the misuse of our little emblem of “well being”, by white supremacists and enlightened liberals alike.

The Germans did us, Indians, a great favor once upon a time in terms of soft-power propaganda. The obsession of German intellectuals like Friedrich Schlegel, Heinrich Heine, Arthur Schopenhauer and others with India’s Hindu-Buddhist past immensely popularized Classical Indian heritage in the Western world.

Then in an inauspicious hour Herr Hitler chose to tango with ancient India and adopted the Swastika to represent his worldview and ruined it all. Forgotten was its ancient association with India and many other cultures across the globe and the Swastika was permanently registered as the very token of evil in the collective consciousness of the West.

Of late, euphoria over ancient India is slightly out of fashion, in the erudite circles. Yet, this little icon of ancient India continues to be at the center of a throbbing controversy. The stakeholders in this debate include the contrite Germans, ever ardent to efface all vestiges of the Nazi past of their fatherland, the worldwide Jewish community to whom reference to anything even remotely associated with Nazism is likely to touch a raw nerve, the racist Neo-Nazi gangs who are hell bent on resurrecting Hitler’s ghost and last but not the least, Hindu groups all over the world who wish to prevent an unjust vilification of something they hold dear and sacred.

Two successive German attempts to ban the Swastika across Europe were voted down in the EU Parliament in 2005 and 2007 because of staunch opposition from Hindu groups. In 2015, it came to news that the George Washington University in the US was deliberating upon a ban upon the emblem. Finally in the sequence of events came the Charlottesville protests and counter protests and once again the media is abuzz with vitriolic diatribes against the symbol of evil.

Had the association of Swastika with the Hindu-Buddhist-Jain cultures not been so alive and intimate the debate would not have gained much steam in the first place. It is yet to be seen as to how Americans are going to reconcile these ever pressing demands for bans and anathemas with their vigorous defence of the First Amendment, but in Europe the annihilation of the Swastika would have been over and done with had there been no opposition from the Hindu organizations.

Such opposition was spontaneous, given the fact that the Swastika is a revered symbol today amongst us, the followers of the Indic religions, as it was in hallowed antiquity. This symbol continues to adorn our temples, it is painted on our homes and altars and we continue to name our children after it. Given the free traffic of information and ideas of our times such flat and unqualified demonization of the Swastika cannot be put down to ignorance of facts. Callous indifference to the sentiments of more than one-fifth of the world population is perhaps a more cogent explanation.

The blast of disdain touches a raw nerve on this end as well. After all, by what right did the toothbrush-mustachioed dictator have a greater claim upon this symbol than the followers of three major world religions? How indelible indeed was the stigma attached to the Swastika by the Third Reich that even its five thousand year old civilizational ties could not redeem it?

When was the last time that we heard the world decrying the Finger of Tawheed since that is a favourite gesture of every Jihadi terrorist? How many proposals were made to ban the cross because its association with the unpleasant memories of the Inquisition, especially from the heathen point of view?

Singling out the Swastika to symbolize anti-Semitism represents a myopic perspective of history. The incorporation of the Swastika in Hitler’s warped worldview was a sudden and a disconnected incident, with the symbol having nothing intrinsically anti-Jewish about it. The Holocaust, as a matter of fact was the climax in a long tradition of anti-Semitism in Europe. From Shylock to Dreyfus, the annals of persecuted Jews in Europe are horrible and pitiful.

On the other hand not one Yehudi suffered an iota of persecution because of his faith or race in hands of the idol-worshipping Hindu, the agnostic Buddhist or the atheist Jain. Indeed, ever since their arrival, the children of Abraham did not have one single occasion to weep by the rivers of Hind and the song of their Lord was uninterrupted till the fires of the Inquisition arrived at the shores of the land in 1560.

The process of condensation of the world into a global village is almost at the final stages of its development. As diverse ethnic communities and belief systems come to greater physical proximity and societies grow more multicultural in character it is imperative that matters pertaining to civilizational feelings and sentiments are dealt with an extra dose of caution.

The first necessary step in this enterprise is to be a little less casual in matters of semantics. Thus, every time a vehicle mows down innocent civilians in a busy metropolis we are reminded that that the act had been perpetrated by an Islamist and not an Islamic terrorist, to underscore the difference between a great world religion and a violent political ideology. On the same token, the emblem of the Ku Klux Klan is referred to as the “Burning Cross” and not just “the Cross”, lest the feelings of a devout Christian are injured.

To resolve the controversy, first of all, it is necessary to stop careless and uninformed use of the very term “Swastika”. The Nazi emblem, as a matter of fact, is slightly different from the traditional Indic symbol, the former being a tilted version of the latter.

At times, contrary to the Shakespearean dictum, there is lot in a name. Let us strip the Nazi emblem of this distinctly Indic nomenclature and restore it to the original proprietor and most of the hurt feelings of the Swastika-defenders would be assuaged. By adding a qualifier it can be renamed as the Nazi-Swastika or the tilted-Swastika, to highlight its difference with the Swastika per se before its subjection to Damnatio Memoriae along with other paraphernalia of the Third Reich.

With this, hopefully, no feelings would collide and all this cognitive dissonance over the sacred and the profane would come to a permanent and necessary closure.

Bengal’s bomb menace continues as 14 live bombs are found at a shop in Howrah District

0

A total of 14 live bombs were reportedly recovered from a shop in West Bengal’s Howrah district on Thursday.

This discovery was made by the bomb disposal squad after the shop owner named Komer Ali was injured in an explosion there on Wednesday. He as a result was admitted in a Uluberia hospital with severe burn injuries. The explosion had happened when Ali was closing shop, which is located in the Teen Kapati Pool region which falls under the under the jurisdiction of Manikpur police station.

This explosion thus had resulted in a search operation by the bomb disposal squad, the next day. With Komer being in the hospital, he hasn’t yet been interrogated by the police.

It remains to be seen of there is some form of a terror angle in the case, considering the fact that the Durga Puja is just 11 days away. In 2013 also 24 crude bombs were recovered from Kolkata, barely a week before the start of Durga Puja.

Such incidents of bombs being recovered have unfortunately become a very common occurrence in West Bengal, with some of them being even stored in establishments owned by alleged political party workers.

In May, around 70 live bombs were recovered in Chandipur village of the Birbhum district which had caused panic in the area.

We had recently reported how a house of a former Trinamool Congress worker was destroyed after 200 bombs kept there by him had accidentally exploded. This incident had happened in Demutita area of Lokpur village, which is about 50 Kms from Santiniketan. The house owner named Sheikh Samirchand was reportedly a notorious criminal who even had the backing of a Trinamool faction. Even though the party had denied any associations with him, the villagers were insistent on his links with the ruling party.

This February there were reports of 3 people getting seriously injured after they were making bombs in an under-construction house belonging to a Trinamool Congress leader named Babu Mondal. This incident had happened in Hariharpara village of Kalna which falls under the Burdwan district.

Similarly two men named Hafizul and Tarik Hussain were killed in Birbhum in 2016 when the bombs they were reportedly making to attack a rival group exploded accidentally. 8 people had also died in Birbhum this April, while making bombs in a house.

Silence over murder of BJP leader in Bengal questioned

0

A week after the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh in Bengalaru, a BJP booth president, Soumitra Ghoshal was allegedly murdered in Baruipur, West Bengal, and there has been complete silence over the same in mainstream media.

Caution: Graphic images

BJP leader and Member of Parliament, Roopa Ganguly, too tweeted a graphic image of Ghoshal saying that the local BJP councillor and karyakartas have lodged a case.

While few leaders raised their voice, the mainstream journalists have been completely silent on the same.

The journalists who had gone all guns blazing on murder of Lankesh are mum on this incident.

However, few media houses have finally reported the incident, days after it took place. Sayantan Basu, convenor of BJP’s media management cell, alleged that Trinamool backed local ‘hooligans’ were behind the murder. He also alleged that since Ghoshal was successfully expanding BJP’s network in the area, the local Trinamool leaders got him killed.

Bengal has a history of political murders and despite that, the silence of Mamata Banerjee on this is disappointing.

Govt revokes JNU’s FCRA registration after it failed to file its annual returns

0

The Central government according to reports, has revoked the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act-2010 (FCRA), of top Universities like the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), which means that as a result they won’t be able to receive foreign funds.

This step was reportedly taken because these institutes didn’t file their returns for a period of 5 consecutive years from 2010-11 to 2014-15. Other prominent educational institutes which have been barred include: Delhi University, Indira Gandhi National Open University, IIT-Delhi, Mumbai University, Pune University, Punjab University, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, and Lady Irwin College.

They were reportedly asked to file their replies for the lack of compliance by 23rd June, failing which this action appears to have been taken against them. Even NGOs, prominent associations, societies and trusts have not been spared by the government. According to the report, the licence of organisations like Supreme Court Bar Association, Gandhi Peace Foundation, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, FICCI Socio-Economic Development Foundation, People for Animals and Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital has also been revoked.

As a result of this action, questions might be raised as to why were such prominent organisations not filing their annual returns as mandated by the FCRA Act? Was this a logistic problem or did they have something to hide?

The government though doesn’t appear to be any mood of stopping here, after it has also directed 1,222 NGOs to validate their bank accounts where they receive the foreign funds, failing which punitive action would be taken against them. The NGOs in the list includes Sri Ramakrishna Math, Ramakrishna Mission and Coimbatore Christian Charitable Trust.

The Home Ministry in its circular has also specified that all the NCRA registered NGOs need to receive their donations in a single bank account.

The government has in the past 3 years, cancelled the registration of more than 10,000 NGOs for not filing their returns. Plus more than 1,300 NGOs have been denied renewals after they reportedly violated various provisions of the FCRA.

Such an action by the government may have been a long time coming, as was reported by us in the recent past.
